but not as we know itThe Cast 150 looks like a Chromecast by Dominic Preston The Cast 150 looks suspiciously similar to Google’s discontinued Chromecast flat white dongle including a built-in HDMI cable Even the software’s the same: this runs on Google TV and supports Google’s video casting tech too so the day-to-day experience should be about the same The Cast 150 includes support for 4K, along with the HDR10 standard and Dolby Atmos audio. The only worrying spec is the 8GB of storage, which might be limiting if you intend to install a lot of apps. A few come preinstalled, including Netflix and Disney Plus, and it includes Google’s newly mandated “Live TV” button on the remote for quick access to free and live streaming channels We thought the Google TV Streamer was “an upgrade in every way” over the Chromecast, but it also just about doubled the price, and not everyone wants a set-top box on display next to their TV. At €69 (around $78) the Cast 150 costs the same as Google’s 4K Chromecast used to, but it’s only going on sale in Europe, where it launches on May 28th. A UK launch will follow “eventually,” but a US release isn’t on the cards. A weekly newsletter by David Pierce designed to tell you everything you need to download, watch, read, listen to, and explore that fits in The Verge’s universe. we asked you to give a grade for the job that Rob Thomson has done one month into the season using the old grade school way of grading the manager has very little bearing on the ultimate outcomes of games Most of his work is done behind the scenes: setting lineups crafting a bullpen plan and managing the various types of personalities So seeing that most people find him to be average What exactly has he done that would make someone think he’s been there I’d agree that there are some decisions that he has made that have been head scratching You can probably point them out better than I but I’m just not sure what he has done that would warrant anything below above average if we were to point this same question at the front office perhaps the results might skew more in the negative This week’s question has been brought to you by FanDuel Rain showers early with mostly cloudy conditions late the son of Norris and Rita (Darmody) Thomson graduating cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from SUNY Potsdam Bo is survived by his three sisters and their husbands: Mary and Thomas Heins Calling hours will be held from noon to 2:00 p.m A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. followed by the continuation of calling hours Your browser is out of date and potentially vulnerable to security risks. We recommend switching to one of the following browsers: Rojas stretched an easy double into a triple with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that he would have a conversation with Rojas about his aggressive move on the base paths.  leading to speculation over whether Thomson had benched Rojas for the base-running mistake Thomson made an announcement about Rojas not being in the lineup In a video courtesy of On Pattison and Tim Kelly Thomson announced that Rojas is dealing with general body soreness which is the reason for his absence from the lineup Friday night Thomson was asked a further question about whether Rojas' base-running mistake in the ninth inning factored into him not starting no." Thomson was then asked if he talked to Rojas Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas (23) runs towards home during the eighth inning against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park The 24-year-old is off to a strong start offensively in 2025, as he's hitting for a .305 batting average, with a .348 on base percentage and .424 slugging percentage. His .772 OPS is fifth highest on the roster, ahead of Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos He's struck out 17 times compared to five walks but Rojas' offensive output is significantly improved from where it was a year ago as a good year could cement his spot in the outfield and help the Phillies square away one position they've been looking to secure for a long time Rojas will get a chance to catch his breath and recover after starting 16 consecutive games for the Phillies who looks to be part of a team that could use the pitching will hopefully be a difference maker for the Phillies eventually He’s done what he's needed to do throughout his young career after being selected in the 27th round of the 2021 MLB draft making his debut for the Rangers during the 2024 campaign During his four appearances at the major league level the right-hander has posted a 3.18 ERA and struck out six hitters in 5.2 innings He's been a minor league arm for much of his career and was stocked away in Triple-A for the Rangers prior to being traded tossing to the likes of a 1.54 ERA in six outings and 11.2 innings Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson skipper Rob Thomson made a promising announcement saying that it looks like the Phillies got a decent arm and that he loves what his fastball has shown “We got what looks like a pretty good arm,” said Thomson before Thursday’s game, per Philly Nation It's never a bad idea to make small trades like this Even if Robert doesn't work out the way the Phillies are hoping for it isn't like they had to move much in this deal and there's plenty of value in that for a contending team Thomson has launched the Cast 150 a Google TV dongle that looks and works almost exactly like the original Chromecast with Google TV It features the same plug-and-play dongle design for easy connection to any HDMI-equipped screen making it a direct replacement for the old Chromecast with Google TV 4K the Thomson Cast 150 is powered by a quad-core Cortex A35 processor It also offers support for Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision ThomsonThe biggest change shows up in the remote The Cast 150’s voice remote follows Google’s new reference design and includes a dedicated Live TV button placed prominently in the center We exclusively reported this design change a few weeks ago, when Google confirmed that upcoming Google TV devices would include a “Free TV” or “Live TV” button on their remotes. Walmart’s new Onn 4K Pro also features this button the Cast 150’s remote sports the usual shortcut buttons for Netflix Thomson hasn’t revealed the pricing for the Cast 150 yet it ends up close to what the Chromecast with Google TV used to cost and if you truly want the Cast 150 in the US you might have to buy one overseas or import one which will surely add to whatever price tag the company puts on the device OCONTO - Oconto County Circuit Court Judge Michael Judge described the sentencing of former Lakewood Fire Chief Christopher Thomson, who was convicted of stealing nearly $100,000 from the nonprofit he served as treasurer for A prison sentence would better fit Thomson's crimes but would prevent Thomson from beginning to pay back the $128,339.49 he was ordered to pay in restitution to the Lakewood Fire Department Association a nonprofit that raises funds primarily for the Lakewood Fire Department to probation with one year of conditional jail time "This man should go to prison," Judge said there's no acceptance of accountability or responsibility to at least begin some payments to the association this court will find that probation would not depreciate the offenses that occurred over hundreds of times." Three counts of identity theft to obtain money or credit. One count of theft in a business setting between $10,000 and $100,000.Two counts of uttering forgery. One count of fraud against a financial institution with value exceeding $500 but not exceeding $10,000.At his May 5 sentencing which he said was used to pay bills and support his family He apologized directly to the Lakewood Fire Department the court and the Oconto County Sheriff's Department as they "gave me a lot of trust "I wish I would have just asked my family for help instead," Thomson said Current Lakewood Fire Chief Eric Johnson addressed the court before Thomson's sentencing Thomson's actions have affected the entire community and he believes Thomson could have stolen even more than he was convicted of "I worked right alongside him to raise money and what he reported as being actual is far less than what was raised," Johnson said "Allegedly probably took funds straight off the coffers." Trust between fire departments and their communities is vital because fire departments are mostly volunteer They rely on fundraisers and donations from the community to financially support themselves "(Thomson) damaged the name of the Lakewood (Fire Department) Association and Lakewood Fire Department in that community and beyond," Johnson said "The trust in the community to the Lakewood (Fire Department) Association has been damaged severely by this individual and it's going to take a long time to recover that." Oconto County District Attorney Hannah Schuchart and defense attorney Nicole Morley presented Judge with a joint sentencing recommendation of six years' probation which would include one year in jail as a condition The recommendation asked for a stayed and imposed sentence of four years of initial confinement and six years of extended supervision if Thomson's probation is revoked Thomson also must pay $128,339.49 in restitution to the association Probation addresses Thomson's rehabilitative need his punishment and works to make the victims whole again by starting restitution payments sooner Rebuilding the trust Thomson's actions broke within the community and returning the stolen funds to the association are a top priority in this case "It wasn't something that was a single transaction and obviously this kind of coming out to the community it is a violation of trust," Schuchart said "And it's a violation of the faith that the members of the community placed in the department to make good use of their contributions." Thomson's victims are plentiful as he not only hurt the association but "so many different individuals," Judge said The primary factors Judge said he was looking at were restoration and justice for the fire department association which played a large factor in his decision not to send Thomson to prison "I wish I could do more for the town of Lakewood," Judge said other than what has been recommended to me by the state of Wisconsin and by the defense." The gravity of Thomson's offenses grew because they occurred over multiple occasions "Every time you looked at that checkbook that doesn't belong to you and the monies that don't belong to you but I'm going to take it anyway,'" Judge said "This wasn't a one-time taking of a purse or a charge card Judge sentenced Thomson to six years' probation with one year of conditional jail time Judge also sentenced Thomson to required monthly payments toward restitution Within the first two months of his release from jail Thomson will have to pay at least $100 per month to the association The monthly payment will increase to $250 after six months and $500 after one year Vivian Barrett is the public safety reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette You can reach her at vmbarrett@greenbay.gannett.com they are defined and reconciled to the most directly comparable IFRS measures Revenues increased 1% due to 2% growth in recurring revenues (76% of total revenues) partly offset by a 1% decline in transactions revenues and a 6% decline in Global Print Total company revenue growth was negatively impacted by net acquisitions and disposals of 4% and foreign currency of 1%.  Operating profit increased 1% compared to the prior-year period.    Diluted EPS decreased to $0.96 compared to $1.06 in the prior-year period due to higher tax expense and because the prior-year period included currency benefits reflected in other finance income or costs.     Net cash provided by operating activities increased by $13 million (1)      See the “Non-IFRS Financial Measures” section and the as Thomson Reuters believes this provides the best basis to measure performance Revenues decreased 3% due to the impact from the divestiture of FindLaw which negatively impacted recurring and transactions revenues Adjusted EBITDA decreased 2% to $336 million Revenues increased 7% and organic revenue growth was 9% Adjusted EBITDA increased 10% to $213 million including the acquisition impact of SafeSend which was reflected in transactions revenues Adjusted EBITDA increased 17% to $210 million The Tax & Accounting Professionals segment is the company’s most seasonal business with approximately 60% of full-year revenues typically generated in the first and fourth quarters the margin performance of this segment has been generally higher in the first and fourth quarters as costs are typically incurred in a more linear fashion throughout the year The organic revenue decline primarily reflected generative AI related content licensing revenue included in the prior-year period that was largely transactional in nature partially offset by higher agency revenues and a contractual price increase from our news agreement with the Data & Analytics business of LSEG Adjusted EBITDA decreased 34% to $39 million driven by lower shipment volumes and the migration of customers from Global Print to Westlaw Adjusted EBITDA decreased 7% to $44 million Corporate costs were $33 million compared to $17 million in the prior-year period The increase primarily reflected a corporate charge that is not expected to repeat The company reaffirmed all the metrics within its 2025 outlook it announced on February 6 The company’s outlook for 2025 in the table below assumes constant currency rates and incorporates the recent SafeSend acquisition and the divestitures of FindLaw and other exposed to an ‘unknown substance’ in the mail room at Thomson prison Wednesday This is the eighth incident of officers being hospitalized after an exposure this year 17 staff members at the prison were taken to the hospital with a majority of them receiving Narcan All 17 staff members were at home recovering as of Thursday morning as of Thursday morning visitation to the prison has been suspended Zumkehr said the prison remains on lockdown and the FBI and hazmat team are on site at the prison.  “The Federal Bureau of Prisons can no longer remain silent while drug traffickers exploit our mail systems and endanger our staff,” Zumkehr said “These aren’t just statistics – these are real people with families who deserve to return home safely after their shifts.” and ambulances are on the way as of about 12:30 p.m. it was confirmed that a total of 15 officers had been exposed KWQC-TV6 also saw ambulances at the prison According to a media release from AFGE Local 4070 the union is demanding immediate action from Congress 1046 and the implementation of comprehensive screening procedures across all federal correctional facilities “We can confirm that several employees at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Thomson have begun feeling unwell following a possible exposure to an unknown substance Some employees were transported to a local hospital by emergency medical services (EMS).” KWQC will provide updates on-air and online President and CEO of Thomson Reuters (TSX/Nasdaq: TRI) will present at the Barclays Americas Select Franchise Conference on Tuesday May 6 received an individual bid to the 2025 NCAA Urbana Regional it was announced Wednesday (April 30) on the Golf Channel He will head to the regional site hosted by Illinois in Urbana he will make his second consecutive NCAA regional trip and the fifth appearance by a Wolverine Chris O'Neill (2014) and Kyle Mueller (2018) on U-M's individual invitation list Thomson will begin his quest to advance to the 2025 NCAA Finals with his practice round on Sunday he will be vying for the top individual spot among non-qualifying teams (top five) to advance to the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa championships in Carlsbad Thomson is on pace to break his own U-M single-season record (70.56 in 2023-24) He has 20 sub-par rounds and shot a season-low 66 three times -- the first and second rounds of the Canadian Collegiate and the second round of the Boilermaker Thomson was named the Big Ten's Golfer of the Week four times (Sept Michigan has been represented in regional competition by the team or individual 15 times '16 and '17) and five individual selections (2012 U-M has advanced to the NCAA Finals five times -- as a team (1997 U-M has 44 NCAA postseason appearances -- 35 team and 19 individual The Wolverines won back-to-back national titles in 1934 and 1935 Michigan's Individual Invitations to NCAA Postseason • NCAA release Thomson on bullpen: 'We've got the pieces there to get it done'April 20th PHILADELPHIA -- Rob Thomson was asked before Sunday's series finale against the Marlins if he thought the Phillies had a bullpen issue "Because it's still a small sample size That came after the Phillies narrowly escaped with an 11-10 victory on Saturday despite being tagged for six runs in the ninth inning to turn an 11-4 lead into a one-run game It leaves Philadelphia’s bullpen with a 5.81 ERA The only team with a worse mark is the last-place Nationals Sunday also marked the Phillies' sixth blown save this season it has allowed 45 earned runs in 69 2/3 innings That same relief corps that struggled out of the gate last season put up a 2.13 ERA over 84 1/3 innings in May -- the best mark by any team in the Majors the Phillies had a top-10 bullpen in terms of ERA Of course, that group included Jeff Hoffman (2.17 ERA last year) and, eventually, Carlos Estévez (2.57 ERA after being acquired at the Trade Deadline) who came in to clean up Romano's mess Saturday and tossed a scoreless ninth Sunday has a 2.53 ERA and is 5-for-5 in save opportunities And while Kerkering's ERA jumped to 4.50 ERA on Sunday it was only the second time in nine appearances he allowed a run But with Hoffman now with the Blue Jays and Estévez with the Royals that has left some high-leverage opportunities that the Phillies are still waiting for someone other than Alvarado Newcomers Romano (15.26 ERA) and Carlos Hernández (9.00 ERA in six appearances) have yet to get going José Ruiz (6.14 ERA) and Joe Ross (7.45 ERA) have also struggled while Tanner Banks (3.00 ERA) has pitched well in mostly non-leverage situations When the Phillies' bullpen hit its stride last year there were times when Thomson had up to six relievers he trusted in the late innings He could essentially roll out three for the seventh eighth and ninth one night and three others the next -- keeping everyone fresh Strahm and Alvarado any time they're available in a close game but it also presents issues like the one the Phillies will face on Monday when they go into their series opener against the division-leading Mets with both Alvarado and Strahm likely unavailable after pitching each of the past two days "It's important," Thomson said of finding help for that high-leverage trio "But I think we've got the pieces there to get it done." same everything," Kerkering said when asked about the difference from last year to this year "No one's really changed their attitude or like we have to be this kind of bullpen because Hoffy left or Carlos left.' Not a different vibe It's the same vibe as it's always been." especially in April -- and especially when it comes to bullpens where mistakes are magnified because they often decide games As troubling as some of the early season hiccups have been it’s worth noting that Sunday was the first time this season the Phillies lost a game when leading after seven innings They came in a perfect 12-0 when carrying a lead into the eighth inning Only the Padres (13-0) had won more such games without a loss Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball “but it's also the first time we've lost a game while we're leading after seven It's going to happen every once in a while You've just got to shake yourself off and go get them tomorrow." or criminal justice in which litigants can access digital solutions that can improve interactions with law enforcement offer support for incarcerated individuals and facilitate post-incarceration reintegration; or family law in which digital platforms can transform how individuals navigate family and estate matters Other tools also offer comprehensive litigation support for unrepresented litigants to help manage their cases through guided legal education And some digital platforms support entrepreneurs and civil rights advocates by providing legal information and resources for addressing discrimination and harassment This explosion of justice tech tools and platforms even offers the opportunity to reduce the likelihood of recidivism by connecting returning citizens with training and other services — or by streamlining expungement and record-sealing to help users overcome legal obstacles that often hinder employment The justice tech sector is actively transforming outdated and costly legal systems while helping individuals overcome financial and systemic barriers to level the playing field AI-driven solutions can provide more affordable and streamlined legal support clearly demonstrating that the use of AI in a legal context must be developed and delivered with a laser focus on consumer benefit and ensuring transparent and unbiased results justice tech is not just an instrument for efficiency It also presents a fundamental shift and a true alternative to questions around our approach to legal access justice tech can and should be part of the solution for a more accessible and fair legal system The 24th Annual Law Firm COO & CFO Forum continues to be the premier event for Chief Financial Officers and … Event details As financial institutions seek to leverage their use of real-time transactions the need for efficient customer on-boarding processes becomes increasingly critical — as does a way of providing fast and efficient identity verification Among today’s financial services institutions there is a strong preference for conducting business in real-time or as close to it as possible This means everything from opening accounts to wiring funds needs to be done faster and more efficiently can consume valuable time and can sometimes extend to several days Enhancing efficiency necessitates accelerating the screening and compliance procedures to ensure protection for both the customer and the institution involved This need for efficiency aligns closely with the objectives of the customer identification program (CIP) which plays a vital role within financial institutions by helping to prevent financial crimes Compliance with CIP regulations performs several essential functions in addition hindering financial crimes such as money laundering which verifies customer identities to deter such illicit activities through regulations like the USA PATRIOT Act Non-compliance with CIP can result in substantial fines and reputational harm Efficient identity verification is critical for the risk management function of a financial institution’ compliance program as delays may lead to the inadvertent on-boarding of high-risk clients Adherence to CIP requirements also supports institutional integrity accurate and timely identification underpins ongoing anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism monitoring ensuring the continued effectiveness of these efforts prompt compliance is not merely about fulfilling a requirement — it entails actively safeguarding the financial system and the institution from imminent threats while meeting legal obligations in a timely manner As financial crimes evolve, regulatory bodies update CIP rules to address new threats and ensure robust defenses. Technological advancements, such as the development of AI, also play a role, as new tools and methods for verifying customer identities become available necessitate updates to ensure continued compliance And global standards — like those set by the intergovernmental Financial Action Task Force — may influence CIP rule changes to align with international best practices feedback and experience from implementing existing rules can lead to refinement that improves effectiveness and reduces compliance burdens These changes aim to enhance the ability of financial institutions to prevent financial crimes and maintain compliance while lowering regulatory costs and improving operational efficiency compliance professionals in 2025 face potential changes to CIP rules Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network means that it is likely that the CIP rule will be changed within the next year which already includes CIP requirements for some investment advisers As financial institutions implement these updates they will be better positioned to address new challenges and continue providing secure and seamless services in an increasingly fast-paced business environment customer-facing institutions should pay close attention to the imminent regulatory changes as well as the timing for compliance It is likely that compliance effective dates will lie in 2026 but it is important not to rest on that assumption As financial institutions navigate the evolving landscape of real-time transactions the necessity for efficient customer on-boarding processes becomes increasingly critical — and CIP plays a pivotal role in that CIP not only ensures the demand for speed but also helps financial institutions in their fight against financial crime compliance with CIP regulations is essential for managing risks And as regulations and technologies advance financial institutions need to continuously adapt to best maintain robust defenses and operational efficiency protecting themselves and their customers from illicit activity The Emerging Technology and Generative AI Forum is a must for forward-thinking professionals in the professional services industry Event details Red Hill Iron Limited ( (AU:RHI) ) just unveiled an update has entered into a binding agreement to sell its 1.5% net smelter royalty from the Thomson Project to Red Hill Minerals Ltd for $220,000 This transaction follows Eastern Metals’ previous divestment of the Thomson Project to Legacy Minerals Holdings Ltd The sale is contingent upon Red Hill completing due diligence and executing necessary deeds with exclusivity rights held by Red Hill until completion Learn more about RHI stock on TipRanks’ Stock Analysis page Red Hill Iron Limited ( (AU:RHI) ) just unveiled an update Channelsreels-502999Reelsarrow-expand-503000Rob Thomson on Jesús Luzardo's outing in winD-backs @ PhilliesMay 2 2025 | 00:01:35add-reel-503001Reelsshare-square-2-503002ShareRob Thomson discusses Jesús Luzardo's solid outing and strong defense in the Phillies' 3-2 win over the D-backs Eastern Metals Limited ( (AU:EMS) ) has issued an announcement Eastern Metals Limited has finalized an agreement to sell its 1.5% net smelter royalty from the Thomson Project to Red Hill Minerals Ltd for $220,000 subject to due diligence and other conditions reflects Eastern Metals’ strategic move to monetize its assets potentially impacting its financial position and stakeholder interests Eastern Metals Limited operates in the mining industry focusing on the exploration and development of mineral resources The company primarily deals in projects related to metals and minerals with a market focus on expanding its asset portfolio through strategic transactions For a thorough assessment of EMS stock, go to TipRanks’ Stock Analysis page Eastern Metals Limited ( (AU:EMS) ) has issued an announcement (WRDW/WAGT) - Stanford University’s most recent AI Index Report reflects significant advancement in AI capabilities The legal profession is no exception. The recent 2025 Generative AI in Professional Services Report from the Thomson Reuters Institute shows that legal and other professionals are increasingly positive about AI with greater feelings (55%) of excitement and hope Almost two-thirds of respondents (62%) said they believe AI should be used for work and most (89%) said they can think of specific use cases The report also suggests that as AI tools become more integrated into professional workflows they’ll reduce costs and free up professionals for higher-value activities 95% of respondents said they believe AI “will be central to their organization’s workflow within the next five years.” which go beyond prompt-based assistance to much more autonomous assistance Some predict these digital agents will have the power to absorb entire tasks and orchestrate full workflows in the future In conversations I’ve had with law students and early-career attorneys I sense a healthy degree of unease about this shift “Will entry-level jobs even exist in five years?” “Am I learning the right things in the age of AI?” “How will I learn if AI is doing the work I’m supposed to learn from?” As new lawyers search for employment opportunities they may be looking for more than just a paycheck — indeed they may want stability and growth potential They may want teams that are investing in the future — not just the future of technology They may look for leaders who are committed to training the next generation of lawyers I see three types of leaders when it comes to AI adoption: the organizations and professionals that are AI-resistant could potentially fall behind as AI advances tech-first adopters may also risk missing something crucial: the parallel responsibility to develop the next crop of lawyers If the pursuit of efficiency overshadows professional development in an era in which AI could reduce opportunities for practical experience If we optimize everything for speed and scale how will the next generation of lawyers develop basic skills Leaders who understand the evolving landscape will be most effective in forecasting professional development needs and attracting top talent that can excel alongside AI Could the problem created by AI also be solved by AI leaders might deploy AI not just to do the work AI-powered simulations — What if simulations could help junior lawyers develop and test skills in a controlled environment a new litigator might practice cross-examining a virtual witness with AI offering real-time critiques on tone Or perhaps a junior lawyer could conduct a virtual negotiation with an AI tool that offers real-time feedback Exercises like this could help build confidence and competence AI draft assistants that coach — Could drafting assistants go beyond offering clauses and instead offer interactive drafting experiences AI programs that explain the reasoning behind certain clause structures or pose hypotheticals to help a lawyer think through the implications of different language might help a junior lawyer prepare an agreement and understand why certain language does or does not work AI as a Socratic partner — AI company Anthropic recently released an educational model for academic settings that asks probing questions instead of offering an immediate answer a junior lawyer might engage with an AI tool designed to challenge their assumptions instead of jumping straight into legal research the associate might begin by discussing their plan with an AI tool that pushes them to think more critically about the questions helps them carefully consider the structure of their approach to the research This kind of dialogue could foster deeper learning and sharper thinking are not as important as a commitment to training and development In a profession that’s contemplating its future in the face of AI I don’t have all the answers — I can’t imagine anyone does. However, we can at least keep asking the right questions. How might AI transform the practice of law? What tasks might be most susceptible to automation? What aspects of our work lend themselves to automation, but should nevertheless remain in the hands of a human What skills will be important in a future in which AI is increasingly integrated into our workflows now is the time for critical questions and great legal leadership — the kind that fosters a culture of continuous learning and that recognizes training is not a cost Channelsreels-502202Reelsarrow-expand-502203Rob Thomson on Phillies' 7-2 win over NationalsNationals @ PhilliesApril 30 2025 | 00:01:24add-reel-502204Reelsshare-square-2-502205ShareRob Thomson discusses Cristopher Sánchez's start as well as his team's clutch hitting and solid defense in the Phillies' 7-2 win over the Nationals Hunter Thomson (Michigan Photography)Seniors Thomson Liu Lead Wolverines to 15th at Big Ten Championships4/27/2025 5:40:00 PM | Men's Golf -- With the entire 18-team field battling cold temperatures and gusting winds the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a 308 final-round score today (Sunday April 27) to finish 15th with an 879 54-hole total at the Big Ten Championships at Baltimore Country Club's Five Farms East Course After opening with team rounds of 288 and 283 Facing gusts as high as 30 mph and cooler conditions scoring rose nearly four strokes across the field during the final round Michigan posted a 308 to close out the tournament in 15th place Senior leaders Hunter Thomson and Yuqi Liu paced U-M throughout the weekend Thomson tied for 32nd at 218 (70-72-76) in his fourth Big Ten Championships appearance while Liu tied for 42nd with a 219 total (71-69-79) Among Michigan's first-time postseason competitors, RJ Arone tied for 58th at 222 (78-71-73), and Dean Muratore tied for 65th at 223 (72-71-80). capabilities and CoCounsel can automatically perform various tasks on these documents Deposition transcripts can easily exceed a hundred pages and merger and acquisition agreements can be similarly lengthy some tasks require the simultaneous analysis of multiple documents such as comparing contracts or testimonies solutions must handle long documents without losing track of critical information equivalent to approximately 6,000 words or 20 pages of text it was necessary to split them into smaller chunks most major LLMs have context windows ranging from 128K to over 1M tokens the ability to fit 1M tokens into an input window does not guarantee effective performance with that much text the higher the risk of missing important details To ensure CoCounsel’s effectiveness with long documents we’ve developed rigorous testing protocols to measure long context effectiveness Why a Multi-LLM Strategy—and Trusted Testing Ground—Matter we don’t believe in putting all our bets on a single model The idea that one LLM can outperform across every task—especially in high-stakes professional domains—is a myth That’s why we’ve built a multi-LLM strategy into the core of our AI infrastructure Others handle long documents more reliably The only way to know what’s best for any given task is to test them—relentlessly Because of our rigor and persistence in this space early tester and collaborator for leading AI labs When major providers want to understand how their newest models perform in high-stakes Because we’re uniquely positioned to pressure-test these models against the complexity and accountability that professionals demand — and few others can match When OpenAI was looking to train and validate a custom model built on o1-mini And when the next generation of long-context models hits the market A multi-model strategy only works if you know which model to trust—and when Benchmarking is how we turn optionality into precision iterative approach isn’t just the best way to stay competitive—it’s the only way in a space that’s evolving daily Our ability to rapidly test and integrate the best model for the job—at any moment—isn’t just a technical strategy And all of this isn’t just about immediate performance gains It’s about building the foundation for truly agentic AI—the kind of intelligent assistant that can plan and act across professional workflows with precision and trust That future won’t be built on rigid stacks or static decisions It will be built by those who can move with the market and deliver products that perform in the real world a significant question was whether and how to utilize retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) A common pattern in RAG applications is to split documents into passages (e.g. sentences or paragraphs) and store them in a search index When a user requests information from the application the top N search results are retrieved and fed to the LLM in order to ground the response RAG is effective when searching through a vast collection of documents (such as all case law) or when looking for simple factoid questions easily found within a document (e.g. some complex queries require a more sophisticated discovery process and more context from the underlying documents the query “Did the defendant contradict himself in his testimony?” requires comparing each statement in the testimony against all others; a semantic retrieval using that query would likely only return passages explicitly discussing contradictory testimony In our internal testing (more on this later) we found that inputting the full document text into the LLM’s input window (and chunking extremely long documents when necessary) generally outperformed RAG for most of our document-based skills This finding is supported by studies in the literature1,2 in CoCounsel 2.0 we leverage long context LLMs to the greatest extent possible to ensure all relevant context is passed to the LLM RAG is reserved for skills that require searching through a repository of content Comparing the Current Long-Context Models + testing GPT-4.1 As discussed in our previous post, before deploying an LLM into production Our initial benchmarks measure LLM performance across key capabilities critical to our skills We use over 20,000 test samples from open and private benchmarks covering legal reasoning These tests have easily gradable answers (e.g. allowing for full automation and easy evaluation of new LLM releases which measures the ability to answer questions from Wikipedia passages which assesses the ability to answer questions from English novels Both tests accommodate up to 1M input tokens and measure key long context capabilities critical to our skills such as multihop reasoning (synthesizing information from multiple locations in the input text) and multitarget reasoning (locating and returning multiple pieces of information) These capabilities are essential for applications like interpreting contracts or regulations where the definition of a term in one part of the text determines how another part is interpreted or applied We track and evaluate all major LLM releases to ensure we are using the latest and most advanced models such as the newly updated GPT-4.1 model with its much-improved long context capabilities The top-performing LLMs from our initial benchmarks are tested on our actual skills This stage involves iteratively developing (sometimes very complex) prompt flows specific to each skill to ensure the LLM consistently generates accurate and comprehensive responses required for legal work it undergoes evaluation using LLM-as-a-judge against attorney-authored criteria our team of attorney subject matter experts (SMEs) has generated hundreds of tests representing real use cases “What was the basis of Panda’s argument for why they believed they were entitled to an insurance payout?”) and an ideal minimum viable answer capturing the key data elements necessary for the answer to be useful in a legal context Our SMEs and engineers collaborate to create grading prompts so that an LLM judge can score skill outputs against the ideal answers written by our SMEs where LLM-as-a-judge scores are manually reviewed and ideal answers are refined until the LLM-as-a-judge scores align with our SME scores More details on our skill-specific benchmarks are discussed in our previous post Our test samples are carefully curated by our SMEs to be representative of the use cases of our users we have test samples utilizing one or more source documents with a total input length of up to 1M tokens we have constructed specialized long context test sets where all test samples use one or more source documents totaling 100K–1M tokens in length These long context tests are crucial because we have found that the effective context windows of LLMs where they perform accurately and reliably are often much smaller than their available context window we have observed that the more complex and challenging a skill the smaller an LLM’s effective context window for that skill where we search a document for one or a few data elements most LLMs can accurately generate answers at input lengths up to several hundred thousand tokens where many different data elements must be tracked and returned LLMs may struggle with recall to a greater degree we still split documents into smaller chunks to ensure important information isn’t missed When you look at the advertised context window for leading models today don’t be fooled into thinking this is a solved problem reasoning-heavy real-world problem where that effective context window shrinks Our challenge to the model builders: keep stretching and stress-testing that boundary All new LLMs undergo rigorous manual review by our attorney SMEs before deployment Our SMEs can capture nuanced details missed by automated graders and provide feedback to our engineers for improvement These SMEs further provide the final check to verify that the new LLM flow performs better than the previously deployed solution and meets the exacting standards for reliability and accuracy in legal use Our long-context benchmarking work is more than just performance testing — it’s a blueprint for what comes next We’re not just optimizing for prompt-and-response AI We’re laying the technical foundation for truly agentic systems: AI that can not only read and reason Imagine an AI assistant that doesn’t just answer a question and how to take the next step — whether that’s reviewing a deposition This next chapter requires everything we’ve built so far: long-context capabilities and deep integration into the professional’s real-world tasks Insights from "From Potential to Performance - The Value of Gen
