pulled out a handgun and shot towards the other driver
Police said that a woman and a juvenile were inside the victim’s vehicle at the time of the shooting
The victim was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries
the suspect took off in a red or maroon Jeep Grand Cherokee with black rims

lending a helping hand and following through on promises
including wide receiver Dont'e Thornton
After adding Ashton Jeanty and Jack Bech in earlier rounds
the Raiders added another talented pass catcher in Thornton
The Raiders' Director of College Scouting
spoke with the media following the completion of this year's draft
Yeargan noted a few of the things that make Thornton special
Mark [Davis] joked that was the Al Davis pick of this draft
and I think it's just focusing on what he can do and what he can be
He's 6'4"-plus 200-something pounds
I think it's pretty impressive," Yeargan said
"And we think he hasn't hit his ceiling yet. We think he can still refine and improve under our coaches
but he definitely has physical traits that are outstanding." Yeah
and he's got some unique qualities in terms of his size and speed
I think that will help him have an immediate impact
Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly will use Thornton's unique physical gifts and skill set. In his first press conference, shortly after being drafted by the Raiders
Thornton explained which players he tries to model his game after
"I model my game after Calvin Johnson and Julio Jones
I've been watching a lot of Nico Collins
I be trying to imitate a lot of things that he shows
And then just looking at the group of guys that I'm going to be joining
I feel like we have the potential to be a very explosive offense and overall team in general
so I'm definitely excited," Thornton said
John Spytek did a masterful job in his first draft with the team
Continuing to draft talented players like Thornton will go a long way toward expediting the Raiders' roster overhaul
Thornton could thrive with less attention on him
with several other talented pass catchers on the roster

Ohio State appears to be two steps closer to retaining its cornerstone point guard for one final season
the NBA announced its list of 75 players invited to the 2025 draft combine
Ohio State's Bruce Thornton: Three-time Ohio State captain Bruce Thornton exploring NBA, then likely returning to Buckeyes
Now, an NBA source said the second-team all-Big Ten guard and three-time Ohio State captain failed to land an invitation to the league’s G League Elite Camp
Those who perform well in the G League Elite Camp might later be asked to attend the NBA’s full draft combine
While not being invited to either camp does not guarantee that a player would not be selected in the NBA draft
it does make that possibility rather unlikely
42.4% of his 3-pointers and 85.3% of his free throws
He averaged a career-high 17.7 points per game and added 4.6 assists
Thornton has averaged 14.6 points and 4.0 assists per game
He was a priority for Ohio State to retain in the offseason. When the Buckeyes shared some details regarding their Big Ten schedule this year
they did so using a graphic featuring the 6-foot-2
Ohio State Buckeyes: Join the Ohio State Sports Insider text group with Bill Rabinowitz, Joey Kaufman Adam Jardy
Thornton is expected to pair with returner John Mobley Jr
Mobley averaged 13 points per game and shot 38.5% from 3-point range as a freshman
The senior-to-be was the only Ohio State player to enter his name into the NBA draft process
and he retained his collegiate eligibility while doing so
The Buckeyes are still in the mix to add a wing and another big to their roster via the transfer portal

The Las Vegas Raiders continued building up their draft class Saturday
taking one of the best physical athletes in Dont'e Thornton Jr
Here are a few things to get you acquainted with the Tennessee receiver
He became a four-star prospect at Mount St
Joseph High School and led them to a state championship his junior season
he graduated with a 3.9 GPA and was elected class president
He also helped raise his four younger siblings in a single parent household
as his father was incarcerated since he was nine years old
"I'd say it was just me being the older brother and just trying to help my mother and make things easier for her," Thornton told The Baltimore Sun
but I was just doing whatever I could to help make it easier on her throughout that process."
"I was forced to grow up a little faster and maybe I didn't live the true childhood that a normal kid should have in terms of a lot of things
but I felt like all that stuff shaped me to be the man that I am today," he added
Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr
runs the 40-yard dash at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine
Thornton began making a name for himself after transferring to Tennessee
he caught 39 passes for 885 yards and seven touchdowns
He finished with over 100 yards in three games in 2024
as Tennessee reached a 10-3 record and their first CFB Playoff Berth
It's also worth noting his 25.4 yards per reception recorded in his senior season led the nation in that category
"I thought with me having the aspiration of wanting to go to the NFL and being a receiver
Tennessee was the best option for me," Dont'e Thornton Jr
Like it wasn't immediate and it didn't turn over the way I wanted as fast as it did
but it ended up being all good for me at the end of it."
Thornton strung together a superb showing at the NFL Combine with his athleticism
While posting impressive times in the 10-yard split (1.51) and a 10-foot-6 in the broad jump
the second best time of any receiver at the event
This is even more impressive accounting for the fact Thornton is 6-foot-5
making him the tallest player to run a 4.30 or faster 40-yard dash at the Combine since 2003
"[A]long with being a deep threat down the field
a big guy that's fast," Thornton describing his skillset
"I'd say just bringing a great player into the program
a guy that's going to do whatever it takes to make the program better in any aspect
I'm just basically doing my one percent all the time
just coming in and being a great guy for the team."

— Investigators are searching for a man who reportedly tried to abduct a 15-year-old girl near Thornton Middle School Monday morning
According to the Thornton Police Department
the girl was walking near the school around 11:20 a.m
Thornton PD said school resource officers were notified of the incident just before 4 p.m
Surveillance cameras captured the man following the attempted abduction
with a slim to medium build and blonde hair
He was last seen wearing a dark-colored long-sleeved shirt
The man may be associated with a red sedan with a white bumper
Thornton PD said it is working with Adams 12 Five Star Schools "to ensure the safety of students and staff as the investigation continues." The department is also urging students and families to stay alert and take simple precautions
like walking in groups and reporting suspicious behavior
Anyone with information about the suspect or incident is asked to call the Thornton PD tip line at 720-977-5069
Luke Thornton said playing high school sports requires two simple facts: seizing the moment and overcoming the learning curve
The Somerset Berkley three-sport athlete participates year around in soccer in the fall
indoor track in the winter and baseball in the spring
one other hobby the Berkley resident has grown to love besides high school sports — surfing waves
“I pretty much surf all year round now,” Thornton said
which is farther down from Horseneck Beach
Thornton said he started liking surfing at the age of 10
His mom Christine sent him to a week-long summer camp at Shore Beach near Little Compton
It was there that Thornton grew to love his new hobby
“I really did not want to go but then actually I fell in love with it,” he said
Thornton has since visited San Diego and Florida to test out new waves
He said his goal is to one day visit Hawaii
Vote: 12 athletes up for Herald News Baseball Player of the Week for April 21-27
probably the best waves of my life,” Thornton said about his surfing experience
Something to get my mind away from high school sports
“I play three sports all year round and (surfing) is just another active hobby to keep myself busy
The Raider senior helped lead SBR soccer to a Sweet 16 appearance in the Division 2 tournament in the fall
He scored six goals and was named a SCC honorable mention
he was a member of the pentathlon team that set school record while qualifying for states in the high jump
Thornton and the Raiders are ranked 15th in the power rankings with a 8-3 mark
“Luke does everything we've asked him to do,” SBR second-year head coach Jason Martin said
He handles everything the right way whether it’s practice or preparing his body the right way
He’s an unsung leader for this team for sure.”
Martin was asked what he thought about Thornton as a surfer
I watch too much Shark Week,” smiled Martin
“But he enjoys it and talks about it a lot
Thornton feels surfing goes hand in hand with some of his high school sports
you have to be in the right place at the right time
I high jump for track so a lot of that is mental
You must be moving and keep your mind clear.”
Thornton snowboards and skates all winter just to keep his stamina up for surfing
He will attend Suffolk University in the fall to play baseball
But that doesn’t mean Thornton will forget about surfing anytime soon
“There are some beaches out there and I’m 30 minutes away,” Thornton said

Las Vegas addressed nearly all of their most pressing needs in the draft
primarily focusing on the offensive side of the ball
Although the Raiders' defense could undoubtedly use more work
their offense should be improved enough to compensate for some of its deficiencies
the offense should be improved enough to help keep the Raiders' defense off the field longer
Part of the Raiders' success in the draft was the addition of multiple talented pass catchers
including wide receiver Dont'e Thornton from Tennessee
who should make life easier on Geno Smith and Chip Kelly
Chad Reuter of the NFL Network listed his favorite draft picks in each round of the NFL Draft. He ranked the Raiders' addition of Thornton as the second-best fourth-round pick in the entire draft. Reuter noted just how well Thornton should fit in with the Raiders.
"Somewhere, late Raiders owner Al Davis was smiling after his team selected this speed merchant out of Tennessee. Thornton was severely underutilized in college as he received a career-high 38 targets last season, per Pro Football Focus," Reuter said
"During Shrine Bowl practices, it was clear he could do more than just use his 4.3 speed stretch the field. Las Vegas' roster was in desperate need of receiving talent heading into this draft
so selecting Jack Bech in Round 2 and Thornton in the fourth could pay major dividends."
Las Vegas hopes the addition of Thornton and Beck
will help turn around one of the worst offenses in the league last season
The Raiders still have plenty of work to do on their roster
but they should focus those efforts on the defense
The Raiders will once again be a team led by their offense after their offense's ineptitude forced their defense into the leading role over the past two seasons
Time will tell how valuable Thornton becomes to the Raiders
Las Vegas is banking on Bech and Thornton this upcoming season

Quantum computing is an emerging technology that can give data analysts — and hackers — unprecedented power
Quantum computing uses special hardware and software to amplify computational power
Much of the progress around quantum computing is currently in the realm of research
but recent developments and breakthroughs indicate that quantum computers will soon help find solutions that were not accessible to classical computers
“If a classical computer needs to find a solution like the path out of a maze
it will try every solution sequentially,” explained Grant Thornton Risk Advisory Managing Director Vikrant Rai
“Our current classical computers take one path at a time — but a quantum computer can try multiple solutions at the same time.” This can create an exponential advantage for analyzing data in fields like healthcare research and financial market modeling
but it can also help decrypt data and launch cyberattacks
The power of quantum computing is on track to break the most common cybersecurity encryption in the next few years
quantum computing is going to compromise traditional cryptography.”
quantum computing is going to compromise traditional cryptography,” said Grant Thornton Risk Advisory Manager Alex Hinkebein
“Quantum technology has been incubating for years
it is no longer a hypothesis that it will compromise cryptography within five years
“Quantum computing will compromise traditional cybersecurity
We can no longer assume that data is protected if it is encrypted,” Rai said
He noted that many predict the asymmetric encryption used for most software and internet communications will be unsafe by 2029 and fully breakable by 2034
This threat drove the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to issue new encryption standards that are designed to withstand quantum computer attacks
NIST encourages system administrators to “begin transitioning to the new standards as soon as possible” because the threat to data security is actually already happening
many business and government systems rely on encryption to ensure the privacy and security of the data they store or send
some governmental and non-governmental organizations are already gathering all the encrypted data they can
with a “harvest now decrypt later” (HNDL) mindset
They plan to try to extract insights and value from the data in three to five years
when quantum computing enables its decryption
“Q-day is the day when quantum computers will break through encryption and render traditional security applications useless
unless they have adopted a strategy of post-quantum cryptography and newer encryption standards,” Rai said
Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is a set of algorithms designed to be secure against both classical and quantum computing attacks
Organizations need to replace existing asymmetric encryption with PQC
deprecating methodologies and processes that rely on classical encryption
This requires a shift in business processes as well as technology
and it is part of a larger quantum resilience strategy
A quantum resilience strategy needs to address quantum computing risks across the business and technology aspects of an organization’s governance model
compliance with potential laws and regulations
alignment with know-your-data requirements
It also needs to track the deadlines to get it all done
“If you're just hearing about the concept of Q-day readiness
and data becoming vulnerable to decryption in the next three to five years
you need to start your planning right now.”
NIST and other industry-leading standards provide guidelines for quantum resilience
with most built on a foundation of data hygiene
a lot of the strategies relate to identifying the metadata behind the crypto database,” Rai said
It is important to know your data and understand the answers to the question like
What kind of encryption algorithms are currently being used
How do you prioritize and perform lifeboat exercises for data
What PQC transition plans that need to be put in place?”
“A lot of these concepts were considered in 2022 to 2024,” Rai said
Many organizations have started to address quantum resilience but do not yet have a comprehensive strategy in place
many organizations need to ensure that they’ve addressed the pressing priorities of data security and regulatory compliance:
“Governance and regulatory bodies are preparing post-quantum security standards
so work with legal and compliance to really understand where you need to be in the next three to 10 years
and update policies appropriately,” Hinkebein said
“The most significant step that companies can take is defining their data protection strategies
look to define your data strategy in terms of a roadmap to where you want to be.”
Rai and Hinkebein led a recent webinar about quantum resilience
where most respondents indicated that they had not formed a quantum resilience strategy
develop and test quantum resilience strategies that dynamically identify and manage their operational risks
“A quantum resilience strategy will require you to think through governance models and look at laws and regulations,” Rai said
take steps to protect your data — know your data and apply the appropriate encryption mechanisms that are quantum safe
Governments and regulatory bodies like NIST
the International Organization for Standardization and the European Union are developing and publishing post-quantum security standards (like NIST FIPS 203
NIST began selecting standards and standardizing quantum-resistant algorithms,” Rai said
Three of them are aligned with Q-safe algorithms and
as part of the quantum resilience strategy
we need to consider where to apply Q-safe algorithms to datasets that need to be protected against the quantum computing risks of the future.” As organizations analyze post-quantum standards
they should consider how the standards apply to their unique data
business processes and third-party dependencies
“Organizations need to develop a testing plan to really understand the true nature of the resilience in place,” Hinkebein said
“Look at conducting penetration testing exercises
leveraging models that can bypass the current encryption mechanisms to highlight vulnerabilities,” Rai said
A PQC transition plan is something that can help review current data architecture to prevent digital signature compromise and help mitigate vulnerabilities.”
make plans to develop or transition to PQC,” Hinkebein said
Q-safe resiliency also comes from an organization’s broader cybersecurity strategy
“Think about improving ownership of risks and controls
If you haven't considered zero-trust strategies
Zero trust strategies do not “trust” any users or devices
requiring verification for every access request by using multifactor authentication
single access codes or passwords and biometric confirmations
Many systems have already moved to these models
“We need to think about building quantum resilience across systems,” Rai said
“Do a threat modeling exercise and apply the inventory of data
as well as the inventory of all your encryption and data protection mechanisms
A lot of these efforts can be time-consuming and may have dependencies
This work requires us to look at strategies more closely
layered defense and zero-trust architectures will play a critical role in addressing quantum risks
hardware and hybrid systems that might require a significant overhaul.”
As organizations work to ensure enterprise-wide quantum resilience
internal audit teams can play an essential role
“Internal audit's role is going to be critical in this,” Rai said
“Internal audit has the ability to look at controls from an independent perspective — sometimes even a broader perspective — so it’s able to connect the dots in ways that other functions might not.”
the areas of focus include the particular domains that could be impacted by quantum computing
Auditors can begin by checking factors across primary areas:
Internal auditors need to work with multiple enterprise teams as they look across the spectrum of issues for data protection controls
including data that is hosted or managed by third parties
“One priority is to talk with teams about PQC transition plans,” Hinkebein said
“As you understand more about your environment of data
have they thought through post-quantum cryptography
Are there plans to transition methodologies
These assessments and discussions can lead to clear guidelines that help the organization take the necessary actions for quantum resilience
The internal audit team’s independence and objectivity can play a critical role in evaluating and sharing insights into the organization’s quantum resilience
The team can present a clear evaluation of the strategy’s operating effectiveness
identify improvement strategies driven by leading practices and provide transparency to executive management
This can be especially important if an organization needs to make large changes quickly to achieve quantum resilience
“Internal Audit bears a level of responsibility to provide transparency to upper management and the board
understanding lessons learned and working with management to identify root causes
and provide guidance with leading practices to manage risks within the organization.”
and provide guidance with leading practices to manage risks within the organization,” Rai said
“An important area of responsibility is to understand the operating effectiveness of technical controls and whether the organization is ready for Q-day,” Rai said
To help improve preparedness and foster quantum resilience
internal audit teams can recommend risk-mitigating actions for business leaders
Quantum resilience must ultimately find a place in every organization’s strategy for managing risks — especially as technology risks continue to grow
and they're going to increase in terms of scope,” Hinkebein said
more data is developed and stored in our environment
When we store more data in our environment
understand the data privacy implications around it and refine a strategy to address that.”
“The volume and nature of data created is going to be exponential — and phenomenally challenging to manage.”
noting that these issues will become more complex as companies move from quantum-resilient security to quantum-enabled solutions
“The volume and nature of data created is going to be exponential — and phenomenally challenging to manage
robotics and other tool sets at organizations.”
The future of many organizations could be defined by their quantum computing resilience and capabilities
combined with the technology of quantum computing
is going to significantly shift the balance of power between those that are prepared and advanced in their technology adoption and those that are not,” Rai said
“If you're in the business of financial services
you need to start thinking about transaction information
you need to think about the intellectual property and critical processes that you need to protect
you need to think about your research data.”
“Most organizations should have either started planning or already be in the transition phase,” Rai said

Four puppies were taken during two different incidents at Perfect Pets in February
Dont’e Thornton epitomizes what it means to be a height, weight and speed prospect.
He easily runs and glides past defenders from various pre-snap alignments
Thornton wins the majority of footraces vertically
His role for Tennessee’s offense was to take the top off the defense

He sells vertical routes with urgency and attacks the defensive back
pushing them upfield to snap off routes and generate separation
Thornton has strong ball-tracking skills down the field
He has a good sense of reading the trajectory of the ball and adjusts well if it’s underthrown
Thornton is a feisty and physical run-blocker on the perimeter
He aggressively attacks defensive backs and latches well to secure his block
NFL teams will love his willingness to block for his team
The Volunteers offense is far from NFL-caliber
His route running is not based on sharpness or snap
He rounds into his breaks when working across the field
Thornton projects as a developmental X-receiver with elite field-stretching speed
He will need time to develop into his full skill set
but he could become a big hit for an NFL franchise if given the opportunity
— Elite home run long speed to take the top off the defense consistently
— Great ability to track the ball down the field vertically
— Plays up to his size/frame with strength to win the catch point on 50/50 throws
— Ran a minimal route tree in Tennessee's non-traditional offensive system
— Predictable usage with route running and designs
— Low volume of targets limited his role even though he was the most naturally gifted WR on Tennessee's roster
— Led the nation in average yards per catch (25.4) in 2024

With the 108th overall pick, the Raiders add some serious speed on the outside by selecting Tennessee wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr. He was ranked 158th on the Arif Hasan consensus big board
making this a reach according to most analysts
is an intriguing prospect based on his combination of size and speed
to be used on special teams as a gunner because of his speed and effort
He might also be an outside receiver who comes into the game in run-heavy situations for his blocking and the occasional deep shot off play-action
Almost every route he ran in 2024 was either a go route
He has some potential to develop into a man-coverage beating deep threat
but he has issues with his attack of the football and didn’t show much of an understanding for beating zone coverage
He also played in the Tennessee offense that really doesn’t prepare its players for NFL football
so any upside he has will take a while to unlock
ranked as my 25th wide receiver in the draft
and there were 10 receivers I had ranked ahead of him still on the board
so I wouldn’t have made this pick so early
for the type of player he is and the special teams value he offers
it makes sense why he would be drafted before some of those other players

After a successful 6-3 homestand to open the season
the Cyclones headed to Maryland to play Cal Ripken’s Aberdeen Iron Birds
Brooklyn’s winning ways carried over to Aberdeen as the Cyclones won four of their six games to finish the week with a 10-5 record for third place in the High-A North Division of the South Atlantic League
With last season’s pitching prospects promoted to either Double-A Binghamton or Triple-A Syracuse
one of this season’s second-year Cyclones has jumped into the limelight
New York Met hopeful Zach Thornton stood as he threw eight strikeouts through six scoreless innings for his third consecutive win
the Mets’ 2023 fifth-round draft pick from Grand Canyon University improved his pitching line to 3-0 with 22 strikeouts over 16 innings along with a 0.00 ERA to earn Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Week honors
Keeping the Iron Birds scoreless as well as hitless for the last three innings of this 5-0 win was managed by bullpen relievers Anthony Nunez and Saul Garcia to sew up the Cyclones’ one hit-shutout
After observing Thornton for the first three weeks
Cyclones radio broadcaster Justin Rocke said
“Thornton has been exquisite to start the season
He’s attacked the zone and consistently induced weak contact while working quickly
It appears his fastball has picked up a few ticks in velocity and his command has been stellar to go along
“I’m excited to see how he continues to develop as the season unfolds. There’s no reason he can’t be a Top 30 prospect by mid-season.”
Contributing offensively to the road trip has been hot-hitting third baseman Jacob Reimer
who leads the team in average (.345) and also with 13 runs scored
Reimer was named to last week’s MiLB’s Prospect Team of the Week
Keeping pace with Reimer has been catcher Chris Suero
who belted two home runs in one game in Aberdeen to raise his total to a team-leading five
Since his home run off the scoreboard on opening day
the “Boy from the Bronx” continues to be on a tear with a .283 average and a team-leading 16 RBIs
Suero was also named to the Prospect Team of the Week.
