A new plaque on General Robinson Street on Pittsburgh’s North Shore marks the spot where second base once rested inside Three Rivers Stadium — the place where Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente stood after recording his 3,000th and final hit for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept
recreated his father’s historic pose
The event took place about a week after Clemente Jr
called out the Pirates for mounting an ad near the right-field foul pole where his father’s No
The Pirates have since said they will restore the logo
Clemente got his first hit as a Pirate 70 years ago — on April 17,
1955 — at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood
“This date of my father’s first hit as a Pirate marks the beginning of a great relationship and love affair with the fans,” said Clemente Jr.
who attended the unveiling with his wife and children
The first Latin player to record 3,000 hits and the first Latino inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame
delivering supplies to Nicaragua following an earthquake
said many people know about Clemente the baseball player
the one that continues to ripple across generations
“It was never just about the game,” said Clemente Jr.
who threw out the honorary first pitch Thursday afternoon before the Pirates defeated the Washington Nationals
“I often say he was an angel who just happened to play baseball
and that angel’s mission continues through our family and the Roberto Clemente Foundation
This moment … it means everything.”
The day included the unveiling of the locations of home plate
second base and the pitcher’s mound adjacent to Gold Lot 1A
“These markers tell the tales of our past,” Pirates President Travis Williams said
Former Pirates pitcher and former broadcaster Steve Blass said every great player probably has a great legacy
nobody has a legacy like Roberto Clemente.”
“What a beautiful day to commemorate all the things that happened here … the championships … the memories … the stuff you dream about,” Blass said
The second base marker is near another historic monument
the one that commemorates Franco Harris’ Immaculate Reception
“Think about two of the most iconic moments in the history of Pittsburgh sports — the Immaculate Reception and Roberto Clemente standing at second base after that double,” said Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown
“Clemente’s majestic royal pose
acknowledging the crowd and conveying that sense of pride that he felt
that everyone felt at that remarkable achievement.”
society and culture where there are people who want to erase history,” said state Rep
people who probably never saw themselves as being advocates for anything
saw what happened at the stadium and fought for Roberto Clemente
That speaks a lot to his character.”

THREE RIVERS — American flags will soon fly over the lawn of Three Rivers City Hall for the third annual Patriotic Revival
an event dedicated to celebrating military heroes
has flown a flag in his father's honor at the Patriotic Revival for the past two years
"I bring it in and it creates a scenario in my mind - that I'm doing for him what probably wasn't done for him as a returning veteran," Whitson said
Whitson notes that veterans aren't often visibly involved in community events in Live Oak County
"But when something like this happens - they come out," Whitson said
The Patriotic Revival in Three Rivers reminds people of what military service members have done and continue to do for the country
was inspired by similar displays in Corpus Christi and Robstown
"I got started because - for one - I love America
And I saw these projects in other cities," Dobie said
"And I was like - that is beautiful and I wanted to bring it to our county," she added
Dobie created the event partly to honor people like her father
She flies a flag for the Korean War veteran every year
"It's a wonderful thing to show our patriotism," Dobie said
She said anyone the public feels is a hero is welcome to purchase a flag
The first Patriotic Revival featured 104 flags
Dobie's goal for this year is to display 175 flags
which will go on sale from May 1st through June 11th

THREE RIVERS – The 2025 season continues to be one of growth and rebuilding for the Edwardsburg girls’ soccer team
Sean Jesse’s Lady Eddies faced one of the more experienced teams in the Wolverine Conference Monday night at Three Rivers and fell to their hosts 4-0
The loss drops Edwardsburg to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference matches
It also marked the fifth time this spring that the Eddies have been shutout in a match by its opponent
All seven of Edwardsburg’s losses have come against schools with a winning record
“Three Rivers is a good soccer team and they relied a great deal on the counter attack tonight
They have two real speedy forwards and we just didn’t handle that speed and they played well over the top
We are a team that tries to play good quality soccer and knock the ball around and at times we were able to do that,” Jesse said
“We are a young group that just isn’t a polished team yet
We graduated seven starters from last season
We are going through some growing pains but these kids continue to get better every day
I thought we controled the play for a majority of the match
Right now we just lack that ability to finish when we have ppportunities to score.”
Sophomore miofielder Natalie McGahan scored twice for Three Rivers (4-3-2) in the first half at 37:32 and 31:18 and Paige McDonald
added the Lady Cats’ next goal (22:45) to put the hosts ahead 3-0 after the first half
Senior forward Tori Thorbjorsen scored the final goal for Three Rivers at the 32:23 mark of the second half
recorded the shutout in goal for Three Rivers with 12 saves
Edwardsburg did manage to outshoot Three Rivers 12-10
Freshman Bailey Maurer came up with six saves in goal for Edwardsburg
Maurer was filling in for the Lady Eddies No
1 goalie Mallory Schrock who is currently injured and the team’s No
I thought she stepped in today and did an excellent job for us
She just lacks experience,” Jesse said
Edwardsburg showed vast improvement during the second half after a slow start at the offensive end during the initial 40 minutes of play
Behind the play of senior center midfielder Alexandria Ferguson and sophomore Kennedy Goorhouse and junior Jada Gaideski at the outside midfielder positions
Edwardsburg had several opportunities to put the ball into Three Rivers’ net in the final half
Sophomore Sophia Kuntz missed a penalty kick for Edwardsburg with 17:04 remaining in the match
Three Rivers also had one other chance to score on McDonald’s penalty kick with 8:16 left but her shot hit the crossbar
Three Rivers had five corner kicks to just one for Edwardsburg
The Lady Eddies did have two indirect kicks to none for the Lady Cats
Edwardsburg visits Otsego Wednesday at 6:30 p.m

(WRGB) — New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A
Ball issued a warning Monday to consumers regarding the presence of undeclared sulfites in "Three Rivers" brand golden raisins
packaged in clear 400-gram plastic bags with UPC code 793283750198
may pose a serious health risk to individuals with sulfite sensitivity
People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites may run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product
the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets discovered the issue during routine sampling and analysis by the New York State Food Laboratory
The analysis revealed that the raisins contained 128.76 milligrams of sulfites per serving
far exceeding the 10 milligrams known to trigger severe reactions
in some asthmatics and sensitive individuals
Consumers who have purchased these raisins are urged not to consume them and to discard the product immediately
The product may have been distributed throughout New York State
— Patients were warned to monitor their credit scores after a hospital data breach
provided notice that Three Rivers Hospital patient information was compromised in Dec
potentially affecting some people in the state of Michigan
This is just one of hundreds of medical information data breaches that happened in 2024
according to the Department of Health and Human Services
you cannot have a weak moment,” Vijay Bhuse
associate professor for the College of Computing at Grand Valley State University
CPS Solutions became aware of unauthorized third party access to an employee’s business email account on Dec
An investigation showed data from the account was accessed and removed
potentially including things like full name
such as details on a person’s treatment or prescription needs
credit and debit card information and hospital medical records were not accessed in the breach
“Somebody could be accessing your system from very far away,” said Bhuse
“They could be on the other side of the world.”
The company went on to say in the release that they regret the incident and any concern it may have caused
With more than 700 data breaches affecting medical information in the past year alone
hospitals are a common target for cyber attacks
It’s the sensitivity of information that makes healthcare facilities so vulnerable to attacks
the best thing to do would be to educate your employees,” said Bhuse
“Make them aware of threats related to email
Bhuse said to use multi-factor authentication
spam filters and avoid clicking any external links
“Clicking on the link is equivalent to opening a door for an attacker,” said Bhuse
Bhuse recommends that hospitals or any organizations that worry about cybersecurity should be auditing their system and testing security solutions
always keeping cybersecurity on their radar
“It's been growing and it's not going to go away any time soon because we're doing more and more things online,” said Bhuse
“Awareness and training is the first step.”

Rylie O'Konski (17) from Dowagiac fights Paige McDonald (4) from Three Rivers for possession of the ball
Dowagiac sophomore Johannah McDonald (2) controls the ball as she moves the ball downfield towards the Three Rivers goal
THREE RIVERS – With several young players in his starting lineup
Dowagiac girls’ soccer coach Joey Pasternak knows there are going to be times when the Lady Chieftains are going to show some inconsistency on the field
Dowagiac’s 7-2 non-conference loss Monday on the road in Three Rivers was one of those nights
“At the beginning we came out strong
moving and swinging the ball and attacking as a team
As the match progressed we got away from doing that
We put our heads down and forced it through the middle
didn’t get back defensively and weren’t marking up
That left them wide open and I think they scored their first three goals off corner kicks,” Pasternak said
Junior midfielder Alivia Bell gave Dowagiac (3-3-1) a 1-0 advantage at the 23:24 mark of the first half
Bell scored off a high chipshot into the back of the net
Sophomore midfielder Johannah McDonald was credited with the assist for the Lady Chieftains
Jenna Balog’s goal off a corner kick for Three Rivers at 20:44 evened the match up at 1-1
Freshman forward Emerson Hershberger powered the ball into the back of the Dowagiac net about two minutes later at 18:42 and gave Three Rivers a 2-1 lead
McDonald scored Dowagiac’s next goal off an indirect kick with 11:18 left in the half
Tori Thorbjornsen scored back-to-back goals for Three Rivers at 8:26 and 7:21 for a 4-2 advantage
Emma Sanchez completed the first-half scoring for Three Rivers with a goal at the 3:50 mark that put the Lady Cats up 5-2 at the break
Natalie McGahan scored both second-half goals for Three Rivers at 30:05 and 21:48
McGahan was also credited with four assists on the night
Thorbjornsen racked up two and Savannah Morrill added one for the Lady Cats
Three Rivers recorded 16 shots on goal to nine Dowagiac attempts
Dowagiac sophomore goal keeper Chloe Friske registered nine saves
but I thought she played one of her better games of the season,” Pasternak said
The Lady Chieftains had two corner kicks on the night to six for Three Rivers
Three Rivers goal keeper Rebekah Beachey finished with seven saves
Pasternak continues to be encouraged by what he sees taking place within the program
“We are still adjusting to the pace of the game
We are a young team getting used to playing against seniors
I know we are capable of good things which we’ve shown already in our earlier matches
They key is finding that consistency for a full 80 minutes as a team
Three Rivers is a good team that made us pay for every mistake we made
We just have to return to practice and work on speeding up our game and moving together better,” Pasternak said
As far as the remainder of the season goes
Pasternak says Dowagiac will rely heavily on every member of its 16-player roster
The Chieftains also field a 12-member junior varsity squad
as determined by a vote of the league’s coaches
René Ferrán of High School on SI recently made a list of the top 50 girls athletes in Oregon history
Where do recent Oregon basketball stars Jazzy Davidson
Cameron Brink and Evina Westbrook rank among the state's all-time great girls athletes
We start our list with the face of Oregon City during a time when the Pioneers and girls basketball dominance were synonymous — for a 12-year period from 1992-2004
the program won 10 OSAA state titles and three USA Today national championships (1995-97)
Two common threads during that three-year national championship streak
Hall of Fame coach Brad Smith and his daughter
who lost only twice in 105 games — including a 68-game win streak to close her career
(Oregon City's streak extended after her departure to Vanderbilt University
ending at 75 to make it the second-longest in state history.)
Smith was the engine of those high-powered teams
averaging a double-double her senior season
when she won 4A player of the year honors (10.3 points
She holds the state record for free throw percentage in a season (90% in 1995-96) and has the two highest single-season assist totals — 266 as a junior and 294 as a senior to finish with a state-record 908 for her career
Jones made two all-state teams for Scappoose's back-to-back 4A girls soccer state champions and qualified five times for the state track championships
twice finishing ninth in the 100-meter hurdles to narrowly miss qualifying for the finals
But that isn't why Jones made our list
Her biggest claim to fame is becoming the first girl to garner first-team all-state recognition in football
doing so her senior year after she helped Scappoose reach the 4A championship game
She finished the season going 65 for 72 kicking extra points and making her only field goal attempt
She made all four of her extra-point tries in the 4A final
Jones kicked for three seasons for Scappoose
She holds state records for most PATs in a season and career for a female placekicker
Carlson entered high school with plenty of expectations
having committed to the University of Oregon as an eighth-grade phenom
She more than lived up to the hype for the Spartans
leading them to a 5A state championship as a sophomore and winning Gatorade state player of the year honors as a junior and senior
She finished her career as the state's all-time home runs leader with 72
She holds three of the top nine single-season home runs marks
including a career-high 20 as a senior to go with 56 RBIs
She also has the state record with 252 RBIs
and her .619 batting average ranks fourth all-time
She also wasn't too shabby in the circle for the Spartans
going 33-4 with 327 strikeouts over two seasons
Her move across town to UO ended last spring with her fourth on the school's all-time home runs list with 44 and sixth in career RBIs with 159
She made the all-Pac-12 first team as a senior
when she became the first Ducks player to post a 15 home run-15 stolen base season
There have been nine girls to win four state singles championships in tennis
but only four at Oregon's highest classification — Corvallis' Sue Graham (1963-66)
Crescent Valley's Cisca Mok (1988-91) and Larner
she went her entire career undefeated with the Crusaders
she went 192-40 in games and dropped only one set in 16 matches — falling behind in the 2011 final as a freshman before defeating Lincoln's Ariana Fardanesh 3-6
And to think, she nearly left the Crusaders halfway through her high school career to attend the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island
She had a last-minute change of heart and decided to stay close to her family — especially older brother Saige
who was dealing with a host of health issues
where she became the seventh player in school history to earn all-Big Ten recognition all four seasons and teamed with Maddie Lipp to earn a No
1 national ranking her senior year and receive All-America status
there was no girls javelin thrower in the country better than Yurkovich
who broke the state record as a senior and had the nation's best throw as a junior and senior at Newberg
She won the first of her two 4A state championships in 2004 before embarking on a senior season for the ages with the Tigers
It wasn't just her then-record throw of 176 feet
that was a national best or her second state title — the All-American also won the USA Junior Championships and the Pan-American Junior Championships and took fifth at the U.S
where she won two NCAA championships and four Pac-10 titles and was an All-American all four years
Olympic Trials in 2008 but failed to meet the qualifying standard to throw at the Games
After making the final at the 2009 World Championships
she achieved her dream of throwing at the Olympics in London in 2012
Competing down in Southern Oregon was one of the state's best all-around athletes in recent memory — an all-state performer in three sports who won four 4A state championships
Fisher was an all-state performer three years in a row and backstopped the Mustangs to a state championship as a sophomore
when she posted 11 shutouts in a 17-1 campaign
including back-to-back 1-0 wins over Marist Catholic and Valley Catholic in the final two rounds of the playoffs
Basketball might have been the third of her three sports
but she was a first-team all-state selection as a junior and averaged a double-double during the COVID-shortened 2021 spring season as a senior
when the Mustangs won the culminating-week state tournament event
It was in track and field that Fisher truly shined
She won state titles in the shot put and discus as a senior
2 on the all-time state list in the latter with a winning throw of 166 feet
8 on the school's all-time list in the event with a throw of 176-9
When Oregon high school softball was still in its infancy
Moe set a standard of dominance that has yet to be surpassed
When Moe first entered the circle in the OSAA state championship game as a freshman in 1980
it was only the second year the OSAA sanctioned the sport
and there was only one playoff bracket for all classifications
As the sport grew over the next four years
one thing remained constant — Moe mowing down batters
She led the Lancers to four consecutive state titles (the last two in AAA after the OSAA split the tournament into two classifications)
Her statistics in those four championship game victories
She is fourth on the state's all-time list with 21 no-hitters
Her career earned run average of 0.17 is tied for second — her ERA was 0.00 during her junior season
After that final 1-0 victory over Putnam to clinch her fourth title, she pitched for the University of California and coached her daughters Autumn and Emily to follow her as college pitchers
Nared first made a name for herself at 12 years old
when she appeared on "Good Morning America" after a boys basketball league barred her for being too dominant
That dominance continued during her high school career with the Wildcats
where she was a three-time Metro League player of the year
earning 6A all-state honors each season and leading her team to the state final as a sophomore and three trophies in all
She capped her career with one of the best seasons in state history
4.1 steals and three assists as a senior and winning Gatorade state player of the year
Parade All-America and McDonald's All-American accolades
Her 2,485 career points are a big-school record and rank her No
2 in state history behind Triangle Lake's Kiana Brown (2,894)
Nared played for the University of Tennessee
where she was an AP Honorable Mention All-American as a senior
and two seasons with the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces after being picked by the team in the second round of the 2018 draft
She now plays for Nesibe Aydin Ankara in the Turkish national league
leading the team in steals (1.7 per game) and ranking second in scoring (16.5)
Harmon lettered in three sports with the Pacers — something we emphasized when ranking our all-time greats — but she made a name for herself on the hardwood
holding school records for career points and rebounds
She was a three-time 4A state player of the year and the Gatorade state player of the year as a senior
when she earned EA Sports/ESPN first-team All-America honors
where they lost to Oregon City during the final season of the Pioneers' four-year run as state champions
Her 2,157 career points ranked second in the state's highest classification when she graduated — she's since been surpassed by Nared and Clackamas' Jazzy Davidson to drop to fourth
After Harmon's stellar high school career
helping the Cardinal make two Final Fours and reaching 1,000 career points as a senior
when she averaged a career-best 9.6 points
She played in the 2008 Olympics for New Zealand and internationally in Italy
and moved first to Washington state before arriving in Gresham as an eighth-grader
and she took her first gymnastics classes that year
she was among the gymnasts who set the standard of excellence in the state
she won state titles in the balance beam and floor exercise
she tied for second in the beam and was third in the floor
She continued her gymnastics career at Oregon State
where she became a three-time All-American and won a national championship in the floor exercise in 1982
She took third in the all-around that year
She was a four-time NCAA Western Region champion
team at the 1981 World University Games (she was the top U.S
finisher in the all-around at 15th and made the finals in the floor and beam)
and capped her career by receiving the American Award
honoring the nation's top senior gymnast
Birdsong might have been tucked away along the central Oregon coast
She was a 3A all-state selection all four seasons for the Tigers
and she dominated foes like no one before or since
The two-time Gatorade state player of the year holds Oregon records for single-season (eight) and career (15) perfect games of at least seven innings
and she threw 22 no-hitters and 62 shutouts — twice tossing 19 shutouts in a season
Birdsong finished her career 77-14 with an 0.17 earned run average (third lowest in state history)
She capped her run with a dominant performance in the state final
allowing two hits (the 63rd time she allowed two or fewer hits in a game)
striking out eight and walking none in a 6-0 victory over Cascade
tying the school record for career starts (108) and holding the strikeouts record with 870
She is the most recent 20-game winner in school history
leading Bradley to the 2009 NCAA tournament
During the Crusaders' three-year unbeaten run atop the 6A girls soccer world
she scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Mountainside that not only secured the program's third consecutive state title but also put her atop the state's single-season (55) and career (133) goals lists
She won Gatorade state player of the year honors that year and played in the High School All-American Game
Wilsonville's Lindsey Antonson broke her career goals record two years later
but Harrington still holds the all-time points and assists (63) marks
She played two seasons for the University of Oregon
scoring on her first shot attempt with the Ducks as a redshirt sophomore
She transferred to Loyola Marymount for her final college season

24.62 in the 200 (26th) and 18-7.5 in the long jump (tied for 41st)
Fisher was the best softball player to come through the Oregon high school scene in a generation
She was the first to win state Gatorade player of the year honors three times and was named national player of the year as a senior
when she led the Lava Bears to their first state championship before heading to UCLA as the nation's top recruit
She announced herself during her freshman year
when she won the first of her Gatorade awards after going 9-0 with an 0.25 ERA
allowing 16 hits and zero walks in 56.1 innings
She repeated as the state's top player the next year
tossing six no-hitters and two perfect games and finishing 20-1 with an 0.46 ERA and 259 strikeouts in 122.1 innings
She didn't win the award as a junior despite going 17-2 with an 0.32 ERA in 110 innings
striking out 214 and allowing 37 hits and 16 walks
That set up one of the best seasons in state history — she went 20-2 with two saves
with 261 strikeouts and 18 walks in 134.2 innings
She also played in the outfield for the Lava Bears and was one of the state's most feared hitters
Her 196 hits rank fifth all-time in Oregon
and she tied the state record with 58 doubles
She hit 43 home runs (third in state history)

when she finished second in the discus and sixth in the shot put at the state meet
she won her first title in the discus and took fifth in the shot
when she arrived for the state championships at Eugene's Hayward Field having won 21 consecutive discus competitions and having broken the state record with a throw of 170 feet
She shockingly failed to post a legal throw in three tries
That provided the motivation she needed for her senior year
She once again went undefeated in the discus
breaking her state record at the Three Rivers League district meet with a throw of 179-7
and she followed with a second state title and added her first shot put championship
Moran could turn her attention to the hammer throw
which was her focus during her college career at Arizona State and Oregon
She finished second at the U-20 National Championships as an ASU freshman and twice made the podium at the NCAA championships
placing fifth as a sophomore and fourth as a senior
Clemens comes from one of Eastern Oregon's athletic family dynasties — her father
was a quarterback at Oregon State and Portland State; her brother
was a standout quarterback for the Hilanders who played 11 seasons in the NFL; and sisters Maria (Portland) and Catherine (Boise State) also were college athletes
But Jessica's versatility across three sports put her in a class by herself
She was a 3A all-state selection four times in basketball (twice the player of the year) and three times in volleyball (twice the player of the year
including the Gatorade state player of the year as a senior)
and she was a state champion in the javelin as a junior (with a career-best throw of 131 feet

fourth in the 200 (23.69) and fifth in the 400 (54.25)

Schueler ran for two seasons for Stanford before a falling-out with a new coaching staff led her to leave the program and take up ultimate frisbee while pursuing her medical degree

she teamed with Katie McWilliams to lead the program to its first state championship since 1976
Westbrook won the first of her two Gatorade state player of the year awards after leading the Saxons to a repeat 6A title
That set the stage for a senior season that ranks among the best in state history
earning USA Today and Morgan Wooten national player of the year honors and McDonald's and WBCA All-America recognition
The only disappointment: The Saxons lost to Oregon City in the 6A semifinals to end their bid for a third consecutive state title

which helped her win Gatorade state player of the year honors as a sophomore and junior
She played one game for Tualatin as a senior between stints with the U.S
She scored six goals in four matches at the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament and four goals in New Zealand to tie for third in the Golden Boot race

Kohlmeier was the youngest gymnast to achieve Class 1 status in the state
and she had the opportunity to train with one of the state’s top clubs — the National Academy of Gymnastics in Eugene
that “training seven or eight hours a day just wasn’t my thing,” and it wasn't until the summer before her freshman year that she resumed gymnastics training
By the time Kohlmeier finished high school
she’d become one of the state’s most decorated gymnasts
she won a state title in the vault as a freshman and in the vault and floor exercise as a junior en route to the all-around championship
She nearly swept all four event titles as a senior (she finished second on the balance beam) as she won a second all-around state championship and led Parkrose to the team title
Kohlmeier also was a top hurdler and jumper for the Broncos track and field team
She took second in the 300-meter hurdles and long jump as a sophomore
and won the 100 hurdles state title as a senior
Kohlmeier showed off her gymnastics skills for the capacity crowd at Hayward Field in Eugene

popping up and crossing the finish line fourth
She performed the same feat in her Friday preliminary race to qualify for the final
She competed in the heptathlon on the same Hayward Field track
twice posting top-five finishes for the Ducks at the Pac-10 championships
she married former UO javelin thrower Art Skipper
who tragically died in a plane crash in October 2001

being named a team captain in both sports during her senior year
Slama golfed for Oregon State, and she graduated with the best scoring average (72.95) in school history, qualified for the NCAA championships as a sophomore, won three tournaments and posted 14 top-10 finishes. She turned pro after graduation in 2022 and earned partial status on the Epson Tour this year

where she ranks 15th on the career scoring list with 1,163 points
She is one of 11 players in school history to average 20 or more points in a season
when she led the Pac-10 with 20 points per game
She is 13th on the school's career rebounds list (661)
and she is in her 10th season as the head coach at Linfield
Brink's “godbrother” is Golden State Warriors superstar and close family friend Stephen Curry, and she grew up watching Curry play for Davidson University and in the NBA while harboring dreams of being an artist
It wasn't until middle school that Brink started playing sports
and as she continued growing — eventually getting taller than her talented buddy
standing 6-foot-4 — she blossomed into one of the best post players in state history
Brink was a two-time Gatorade state player of the year and three-time 6A all-state selection while attending Southridge
where she helped the Skyhawks win back-to-back state titles in 2017-18
For her senior season, she decided to transfer down the road to Mountainside
and she led her new team to its first state tournament appearance
where the Mavericks secured a trophy in the hours before the OSAA canceled the remainder of the tournament because of the COVID-19 pandemic
The sudden end to her high school career left Brink with 1,909 points and 1,209 rebounds — one of 14 players to reach 1,000 career points and rebounds in Oregon
a two-time national defensive player of the year
and the Pac-12 player of the year as a senior at Stanford
2 pick in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks and made the U.S
3x3 team for the Paris Olympics before tearing the ACL in her left knee in June

when she won the first of three 6A state championships and narrowly missed breaking the national high school record
she lost only one high school long jump competition
breaking the state record at the state meet her junior year by going 20 feet
the improvements came in leaps and bounds — she jumped farther than 20 feet 14 times in the next 16 months
including a 22-4 effort at the Jesuit Twilight Relays that was one inch short of the national high school record
She won three Nike Outdoor Nationals long jump championships
and took gold at the 2023 U23 North American
Central American and Caribbean Championships
She also was the state's best high school sprinter not named Mia Brahe-Pedersen over that three-year stretch
finishing second as a senior to her good friend in the 100 and 200 meters at the state championships and Nike Outdoor Nationals
Beckmon recently completed her freshman season at the University of Illinois
where she broke the indoor and outdoor school records in the long jump (tying the American U-20 national outdoor record with her 6.86-meter leap)
qualified for the NCAA indoor championships

KALAMAZOO — The Three Rivers wrestling program got a chance to see what the top of the mountain looked like in 2024
And following a less than ideal finish last year
the Wildcats were eager to make it back to the top again
Three Rivers did everything it could to get back to Wings Event Center this year
a state semifinals matchup with 11-time defending champion Lowell saw the team season come to a close on Saturday in a 55-19 matchup
"You can't ask for anymore from the guys," senior Sammy Reynolds said
which consists of the quarterfinals through the actual final matches for state champions at Wings Event Center yearly
the eight teams from each Division are seeded before the quarterfinals start
The seeding was less than ideal for the Wildcats
who felt like they probably should have been seeded higher
You control the controllables," Reynolds said
it was a blessing to just be able to go out there and put the ankle band on one more time
You never really know when your last match is gonna be and today some of us had that last match."
Wildcat head coach Jeff Smith said he was proud of his team's efforts all season
Three Rivers was without a doubt one of the better teams on the mats for Division 2 this year and proved it time and time again
Three Rivers claimed a Wolverine Conference championship this year
the spot in the state semifinals on Saturday was the furthest the wrestling program had ever been
it's the farthest we've ever made it as a team
We wrestled as hard as we could and that's all you can ask."
The Wildcats won matches up in the higher weight classes
Louis Smith registered one of those wins with a pinfall at 175 over Gabe Olin
Jaxon Smith also won at 215 pounds by major decision
Reynolds also won his final match for the Wildcats at 285
This gave Three Rivers a 16-11 edge at the time
but Lowell would win the next eight bouts to put the match away
Evan Harper picked up a win for Three Rivers
"I couldn't be more proud of them," Smith said
come in every day and put the work in when all the other stuff is going on in their life
Three Rivers won the school's first quarterfinals
Braylon Faile then won at 165 by tech fall (23-8) and Louis Smith secured a pinfall win in 54 seconds at 175
Joseph Anglemyer then worked hard from behind at 190
He turned his match around and won by pin at 5:25 of the bout as Three Rivers led 23-0
Brody Morrill won by major decision at 113 and Kyler Snellenbarger then won by decision (7-2) at 120
Jak Monroe was winning his match at 126 pounds
but was not able to complete his bout due to a severely broken nose
Three Rivers responded with three straight victories following that
Gaven Babcock won by pin at 2:33 over Wyatt MacDonald at 132 pounds
Ethan Moreland then picked up a major decision win at 138
Ayden Keller then won his match at 144 pounds
Smith said he and the program were grateful for the encouragement and loyalty from the fanbase this season
"To see how this community supported these guys
Lowell beat Fowlerville 52-14 in the D2 finals
Detroit Catholic Central won over Davison 50-18
Hudson won again by beating the Martin/Climax-Scotts co-op "Team Hybrid" 45-25

There will be bittersweet tears by many jazz fans when the 50th and final Jazzaffair is celebrated this weekend in Three Rivers
“It’s really hard to say this is the last one,” said Linda McKee Amaral
daughter of one of the High Sierra Jazz Band founders
Many of the traditional jazz band members have died
as have many of those who annually traveled from all over to attend the event
The remaining club members no longer feel they can put in all the time it takes
we have been grappling with the daunting question: How much longer can this go on
Most of the other festivals have called it quits
Then Covid shut down the event for two years
Only one original member of the band remains
He and other musicians who later joined the band will have a High Sierra reunion concert on Friday
The music begins with a kick-off dinner Thursday at the Three Rivers Memorial Building
then will run at three venues Friday through Sunday
which includes many of the High Sierra musicians
along with other groups that have made the Jazzaffair a regular gig
there will be open jam sing-alongs for instrumentalists and singers
a women’s night with female jazz singers and shuttles to take jazz fans between venues
Those attending can buy a three-day pass or just buy a ticket for one day or one concert
who played banjo in the jazz haunts in Europe
came to Three Rivers from Germany and wanted to start a traditional (Dixieland) jazz band
including Earl McKee and Bruce Huddleston to create the Jazzberry Jam Band
The Jazzberry Jam Band soon evolved into the High Sierra Jazz Band
which became the hottest band on the Sacramento scene
which was the mecca for traditional jazz back then
The band spent 40 years on the jazz circuit
playing around the world and on cruise ships
“Everybody felt like they knew my dad,” Amaral said
He was so different from other traditional jazz singers.”
He and other band members loved to talk with the crowds
“There was something genuine and uniquely special about our local boys
They reached out to the crowd,” Amaral said
“Hundreds of RVers would come to camp out during the Jazzaffair
and they followed the band to their concerts and went on their cruises with them.”
Feel good energyAmaral has put together a 50-year history book of the High Sierra Jazz Band and Jazzaffair that will be for sale
It includes many memories and anecdotes about their popularity
the famed San Francisco jazz man Tuck Murphy became a friend and played at the 10th Jazzaffair
where they met famed newscaster Walter Cronkite
The band even played the Sydney Opera House in Australia and at the White House
The Jazzaffair has given out over $200,000 in scholarships over the years to music students
“There’s a reason Jazzaffair has lasted an astounding 50 years in our little town of Three Rivers,” said Amaral
who now coordinates the event with her sister Chearl (pronounced ‘Cheryl’ but named for her father
“There’s a palpable ‘feel good energy’ here that’s contagious to the musicians and fans alike.”
The sisters have been involved with Jazzaffair since they were in high school and part of their family’s western singing group
it was just another occasion to gather friends and family,” Amaral said
She has many memories of the legacy Jazzaffair leaves
not to drag it out but rather leave on a high note," she said
"We are proud to be one of the last men standing on the Trad Jazz circuit.”
It became tradition for Earl McKee to end the High Sierra concerts by singing a heart-tugging WWII song

THREE RIVERS — Three Rivers residents will have a much different process for city-wide trash collection this spring
Three Rivers City Hall announced on their Facebook page Saturday
that there will be two options for trash collection
and will be going away from curbside pickup completely
No reasoning was cited by city officials by press time or on the Facebook post for the change
Replacing curbside pickup will be two options: using dump passes or dumpsters that will be placed in each district for a total of 24 hours at each location
city officials said that an additional pass to the Waste Management landfill at 14094 M-60 West just outside of Three Rivers will be mailed to each residential address
which will be good for the rest of the calendar year
There are a number of restrictions on disposed materials that go to the landfill
there will be multiple large dumpsters placed in each district in the city for 24 hours
with days of the week matching a residence’s regular trash day
Department of Public Services Director Amy Roth said the reason for the changes was due to changes in how Waste Management
the city’s partner for the trash collection
like their counterpart trash hauling companies
The new trucks are side load with smaller and higher openings than the previous trucks which does not allow for manual loading of bulk trash
The change in truck design no longer allows for the previous style of bulk trash collection,” Roth said
“The decision was a team effort with the City and Waste Management.”
the city will be utilizing these methods moving forward for bulk trash collection
Those looking for more information about the 2025 citywide trash collection can call the Department of Public Services at (269) 273-1845

The Three Rivers Arts Festival will be shorter this year and held in a new location
But both changes might apply for only this year
the venerable festival’s slate of live music
craft vendors and more will run for four days
rather than using one of the Downtown sites it has occupied in recent years
at the 15th Street Plaza on Waterfront Place
The changes were necessary because of construction Downtown
in particular at the site of the Trust’s own new 8th Street Block Civic Space
between the Veterans Bridge and the McCullough Bridge along the Allegheny River
the festival will remain near its namesake three rivers
not far from its future long-term home in the Cultural District,” said Brooke Jorejsi
the Trust’s chief programming and engagement officer
A Trust spokesperson said details about the layout and programming of the site for the festival will be released in the spring
The spokesperson added that the Trust will revisit the duration of the festival in planning the 2026 iteration
when the event is slated to occupy the 8th Street space

Sierra Subs & Salads in Three Rivers is once again on Yelp’s “Top 100 Places to Eat” list
which ranks the best restaurants across the U.S
"Sierra Subs and Salads has made multiple appearances on our Top 100 Places to Eat list over the years
first earning a spot in 2017 where they were 93rd," said Nathen Marker
Yelp senior community director for the Central Valley
“Users love dining on the dog-friendly outdoor decks that overlook the Kaweah River
This year, Sierra Subs & Salads was ranked No
Owner-operators Dane and Allison Millner offered reasons for their success
“Everything's made from scratch,” Allison said
Dane credited the “creative options,” noting that
“It’s not your normal turkey and American cheese sandwich.”
“We have a great gourmet green sandwich,” said Allison when asked for an example of a creative option
and it comes with turkey or chicken or vegetarian.”
It is one of many recipes that the Millners “made up.”
“We travel every year and we get ideas from our travels
and then we come back and make those ideas into sandwiches,” she said
“All the main specialty sandwiches on the menu were at one time specials,” she added
different sandwich that usually is not something you've seen before,” Dane said
“We're doing a giant Italian sandwich next week,” Allison said
“One of my favorites is a ‘pink melon,’ as we call it,” Dane said
The Millners notice an increase in business every time Yelp includes them on its Top 100 list
“It definitely affects our social media that we put out there
and I think people come in when they see that.”
