Timberlane Regional Middle School student cooking competition team winners include Amber Figueras Dunjo
Timberlane Regional Middle School’s waffle chicken sandwich with a side of potato roses was the winning dish at the school’s cooking competition
Timberlane Regional Middle School student Amber Figueras Dunjo assembles potato roses as part of her team’s winning dish for the school’s cooking competition — a chicken waffle sandwich

Ray Hodges and Garv Bista work together to prepare their dish for a cooking competition at Timberlane Regional Middle School
IT MAY NOT have been an episode of “Top Chef,” but it was close enough for the budding chefs from Timberlane Regional Middle School in Plaistow who sharpened their culinary skills this year and took home the top prize in the inaugural New Hampshire Middle School Cooking Competition
The Timberlane team’s hard work in the school kitchen paid off on Thursday when the students wowed the judges with their scrumptious waffle chicken sandwich and potato roses
beating some tough competition from Pelham Memorial School and Merrimack Valley Middle School in Penacook
Our dish tasted so good,” Timberlane eighth grader Eva Fritsch said after her team’s big win
The school hosted the competition for the first time to give middle school students a chance to showcase their cooking talents
The University of New Hampshire used to offer a cookoff that was open to middle and high school students on a much bigger scale
interest waned and some schools cut their family and consumer sciences programs
a family and consumer sciences teacher at Timberlane Regional Middle School
Timberlane decided to offer a similar competition
After reaching out to other schools to gauge interest
teams from Pelham Memorial and Merrimack Valley agreed to put their skills to the test
The competition had a barbecue theme with honey as a required ingredient
The teams of four to five students had one hour to complete their recipe and were judged on presentation
creative use of the theme ingredient and taste
and it’s a creative outlet and something that’s different,” said Chooljian
who was named the New Hampshire Association of Family & Consumer Sciences 2025 Teacher of the Year
I hope this keeps going and more students get involved on a bigger scale again
I hope it brings light to the fact that so many schools have gotten rid of it.”
While some students come to school with a lot of cooking experience
“Not everyone gets that opportunity at home
so school is a great place to get that in a safe environment,” she said
who provided honey for the competition; Emily Barrett
president-elect of the New Hampshire Association of Family & Consumer Sciences; and Bobby “The Butcher” Marcotte
culinary director for Tuckaway Tavern and Butchery in Raymond and other restaurants and a two-time champion of “Guy’s Grocery Games,” a popular grocery store cooking competition on the Food Network
As the students raced to finish their dishes on time
Marcotte made the rounds and chatted with the young cooks about the importance of finding ways to handle unexpected problems that arise in the kitchen
“Having this going on at this age level is awesome
a lot of the time it’s a very controlled environment,” Marcotte said
“You know exactly how many things you’re making
how much time you have to do stuff and it’s not as realistic and high pressure as the restaurant business is
To have these kinds of settings where you’re forced into a time crunch is important
but it teaches the actual environment that we deal with every day.”
The winning dish featured a waffle chicken sandwich with barbecue sauce and lettuce and tomato
Timberlane seventh grader Amber Figueras Dunjo carefully formed the potato roses
which consisted of fried slices of potatoes wrapped in bacon with a honey glaze
Deciding on a side dish for the competition took some trial and error
“The side was between the potato roses and a peach salad
but the peach salad wasn’t good,” said Carson Bruce
was impressed with how they managed to pull off the win
“I was really surprised with how much time we had afterward once we finished the waffles,” he said
Merrimack Valley eighth grader Gianna Lane described her team’s dish as a coconut breaded chicken thigh topped with a brown sugar caramelized pineapple with a hot sriracha honey sauce on a homemade Hawaiian roll
with a honey glaze sprinkled with Himalayan salt
The students also made a mango jalapeño coleslaw as a side dish
Gianna said her team wanted to come up with an acidic sweet and savory dish
“We really wanted to lean into something a little more unique and creative with a heavy Hawaiian theme,” she said
Pelham prepared barbecue tacos with a cold salad and corn muffins on the side
said she was worried about the team “messing up the recipe” but felt pretty confident heading into the competition
who admitted that it was tough to decide on a winner
as they were impressed with all of the food that the students prepared
“Every single dish was absolutely delicious
I don’t think we expected the high quality of the dishes and the presentation
I’m glad I came hungry,” London told the students
Marcotte praised the students’ work and encouraged them to hit him up for a job in one of his kitchens in the future
Whenever you guys get to working age I’ll be waiting because you guys will all be welcome
all of you,” he told the students as the winning team was announced

and Alan Barretto added a late goal for the Blue Hawks
"Our message to this group of kids is you have to be able to handle adversity," Exeter head coach Dan Curran said
you're going to have teams that can all play
The team that comes out on top is going to be the team that handles adversity the best."
Exeter will host the winner of Wednesday's late game between No
Manix scored his first of two goals 22 minutes into the second half
Barretto's goal came with less than 5 minutes left
and I think the group was confident," Curran said
They knew what they wanted to do and they did it ..
we stuck to the grind and we're onto Saturday."

It was still a slippery situation Friday in parts of Tallahassee and Leon County
Crews continued their extensive work to clear more than a dozen roads of ice
Timberlane Road near Meridian was one of the roads still covered with thick ice Friday morning
CLICK HERE FOR A RUNNING LIST OF ROAD CLOSURES
The road was closed Thursday after slippery conditions caused some cars to slide and some get stuck
I saw this car obviously go through a patch of ice and hit their breaks and immediately started doing donuts in the road," said Matt Moses
Moses lives on the road that is the detour for the icy stretch of Timberlane
"The other cars that were coming were just impatient and going too fast and before you know it
eight cars in the ditch and stuck," Moses said
While cars have slid and others have gotten stuck
Sergeant Brad Reilly said people mostly stayed home Wednesday and Thursday
I think the citizens of Leon County have been kind to us
We have had about a dozen car crashes that we've worked through," Reilly said
"Some people have been sliding off the road."
so we definitely appreciate everybody heeding our request to stay off the roads," Reilly said
Moses said he noticed many going through the detour Friday
"I've seen more cars coming through here in two days than in 8 years," Moses said
He said he is glad law enforcement blocked off icy roads
"The initial reaction is to hit the brakes and that's the worst thing to do when you're driving on snow and ice
drive through it and these people just don't get it," Moses said

It is positioned at the intersection of Interstate 25 and North Speer Boulevard

John Stark and two players from Hillsboro-Deering high schools – known by parents as the Generals Hawks – was in the midst of an up-and-down season
But they thumped a winless Timberlane (0-8-0) team
“I think the boys definitely have the championship team this year
So I think that we want to keep a positive mindset
not just throughout our line but the entire team
“So I think if we just keep that positive mindset
just positive everything – and then the practice
Head coach Denis Kolehmainen gave John Stark sophomore goalie Charlie Pierce his first varsity start for Wednesday night’s action at New England College’s Lee Clement Arena
Pierce saved eight shots and allowed two goals in his debut while his Hillsboro-Deering and Hopkinton teammates took charge of the offense
practice and building chemistry outside of athletics are simple because teammates share the same classrooms
it looks slightly different for this three-school combination team
learning the way that people play and learning what their skills are so that you can build off their skills
they can build off yours and even their weaknesses,” Podsadowski said
“You can help each other build up the weaknesses
it’s a pretty decent line right there with the chemistry that we already have built.”
The on-ice performance of the General Hawks throughout the season shows how student-athletes from separate communities can work together toward a common goal
Kolehmainen said that the General Hawks are implementing film sessions to improve their performance and smooth out details while figuring out which lines work best together
playing together builds bonds outside of the rink
“That’s probably one of the harder things to do
They’ll have their spaghetti parties; they went over to one of the coach’s houses and they were skating on a rink and stuff like that,” Kolehmainen said
‘This is what we’re doing good; this is what we’re not you’re doing so well.’ So they can see
and it’s not like we’re trying to show blame.”
Wednesday’s game was not entirely comfortable for the Stark-Hopkinton/H-D boys
After a few roughing penalties and a separate minor for too many men on the ice
the General Hawks were only ahead by one goal by the end of the second period despite outshooting the Owls
JSHHD stepped on the gas and did not let up
Hedquist scored his second goal of the night 16 seconds into the period
Podsadowski completed his hat trick and snuck in a fourth goal late in the game
“It definitely wasn’t just me,” Podsadowski said
“It was pretty much all around that line effort there
But I think the boys around me played pretty good
The relatively young squad wants to compete in the playoffs and make a run for the Division III championship this year
“This is a good game for us; it got us back up to .500
Now we just look forward to trying to position ourselves trying to make the playoffs
And it’s anyone’s ballgame after that,” Kolehmainen said
The General Hawks’ next game is at Pembroke-Campbell on Friday night

City of Powell River Council is directing staff to apply for a grant to help pay for the demolition of the caretaker’s building at Timberlane Park
councillors heard from chief administrative officer Lisa Bhopalsingh
who said council had a decision to make around a budget amendment to allow for the demolition and removal of the caretaker’s building at the track
She said the written report to councillors provided a brief explanation of the condition of the building following the departure of the full-time caretaker in 2023
“Due to some water damage to the building
it is rendered not usable and beyond repair,” said Bhopalsingh
so putting money into replacing it is not considered a wise operational decision at this time
“You can see the recommendation before you would allow
for us to apply to the Municipal Insurance Association of British Columbia (MIABC) for a grant for up to $22,850
with the remainder of the money to come through our asbestos assessment and abatement fund.”
Councillor Cindy Elliott said the building
and she didn’t believe there was any asbestos in it
so she would be concerned that all the buildings that do have asbestos in them will have to be remediated in the future
“Could we comment on whether there is actually asbestos in this building?” asked Elliott
so it does contain a significant amount of asbestos
Councillor Jim Palm said with the elimination of this building at the track
he believes that the washroom facilities will remain
Council unanimously carried a motion to apply for a grant of up to $22,850 from MIABC
and that council direct staff to amend the city’s 2025 financial plan bylaw to include a $35,000 special project to remove the caretaker’s building from Timberlane Track
funded by the asbestos assessment and abatement project for $12,150
it was discovered by staff that a water leak had caused substantial damage to the building
The report stated that the building in its current stage is a potential liability and needs to be demolished as soon as possible
Staff secured a quote from a qualified contractor to demolish the building and safely dispose of any hazardous materials

and it would be downhill from there for Portsmouth/Oyster River in a 33-17 loss at Tom Daubney Field

PLAISTOW – Friday night’s matchup between Dover and Timberlane looked nothing like a pairing of 0-3 teams
The Green Wave and the Owls went blow for blow before Dover held on for a 35-28 Division I win
After feeling like one got away from them against Manchester Memorial two weeks ago
the win was a spirit-lifter for Dover (1-3)
but big plays for Dover made the difference
“This feels great,” Dover's Cam Grund said
We knew coming into this that our season was on the line.”
Dover led 28-21 with just over 4:30 left in the game
Grund got behind the defense and Cooper Gagne found him for the 52-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 35-21
“This was huge,” said Dover coach Eric Cumba
two against two of the top-five teams in the state
This can set our trajectory as we’re going forward.”
Cumba said his team showed resiliency not just in rebounding from the 0-3 start
Timberlane’s counterpunch after the Green Wave jumped ahead 14-0
“They’re listening to what we say as coaches,’ Cumba said
Nothing in life that’s worth having comes easy.’ I think they realized that tonight
After stopping Timberlane’s final possession on a Grant Davis pass break up
Dover took over at midfield looking to run out the clock
Three straight runs had them facing a fourth-and-inches
and Gagne powered ahead for the first down to clinch the game
but it was 21-21 when Gagne connected with Kayden Joy for the go-ahead score on the first play of the fourth quarter
hitting Jackson Brock for a 44-yard touchdown on the opening drive
then connecting with Grund for another 44-yard score to regain the lead after Timberlane tied the game at 14
Gagne finished the night going 16-for-23 for 269 yards and four touchdowns
while Joseph Leonardi racked up 132 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries
Grund finished with four catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns
while Brock had five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown
Timberlane quarterback Jeremy Mlocek ran for 55 yards and three touchdowns and completed 12 of 22 passes for 97 yards
while Michael Santosuosso reeled in six catches for 58 yards
and Giovanni Recesso ran for 65 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries
Maine – The game began on an ominous note for the Marshwood High School football team
The Class B South Hawks turned the ball over on their first possession Friday night and Noble quickly capitalized on the miscue to set the tone
The Class A South Knights scored on their fifth play from scrimmage following the takeaway and were well on their way to a 35-7 win over Marshwood that dropped the Hawks record to 1-3 following their second straight loss
that’s for sure,” said Marshwood coach Alex Rotsko
“We’re throwing the ball more than we usually do and things like that so obviously it’s going to affect the game and how things go.”
Marshwood scored its only touchdown on a 24-yard pass down the middle from Tyler Hussey to Ryan Essex
Brady Isabelle kicked the extra point to make it 21-7 at halftime
The Hawks made a goal-line stand in the third quarter when Deshawn Toussaint recovered a fumble on the Marshwood 1-yard line
but the Hawks failed to take advantage when they had the ball
Toussaint also had a sack on the Knights’ next possession
We’re hoping to get a few guys back who’ve been out
and the younger guys are learning what to do
Noble (4-0) added a touchdown with 3.9 seconds left in the third quarter that made it 28-7 and another on a long pick-six midway through the fourth to account for the final score
Noble senior quarterback Jamiel Rose figured in three of the Knights’ five touchdowns with a pair of TD passes of 48 yards to Bryson McCormack and 46 yards to Aidan Keefe
“The quarterback’s a real good player,” Rotsko said
“You want to keep him off the field but that didn’t happen.”
Noble’s Tommy Gagnon scored the game’s first TD on a 12-yard scamper and the last with an 80-yard interception return
which hosts Class A Sanford next Friday night
seven guys I thought that just played their butts off tonight,” Rotsko said
More: Exeter, Winnacunnet football rivalry goes back to 1924
"We were pretty well overmatched I would say," STA head coach Ed McDonough said
and the Falcons added one more insurance score midway through the fourth
"We moved the ball a little bit in the fourth quarter
Bow struck twice in the second quarter - one was a long touchdown run
and the other on fourth-and-goal as time expired in the first half
LITCHFIELD - Somersworth jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half
Campbell scored two touchdowns and went into halftime tied at 14-14
and then stripped the ball on the ensuing kickoff and returned that for a game-tying score
21-0 in the second half and walked off with a 38-20 Division III win
but came up short in the end," Somersworth head coach Jeremy Lambert said
"I'm very proud of the effort and toughness we displayed tonight
We played great for the majority of the game
however we did make a few mistakes that gave Campbell opportunities
And when you give opportunities to really good football teams
Somersworth received scores from Amani Muya
Dubois also scored on a 2-point conversion
"There was a lot of great things for us to build on from this game and that's what we're focused on moving forward," Lambert said
Maine - Traip Academy knew Friday's game at Old Orchard Beach would be a tough task
and the Rangers fell 72-14 and are now 1-3 on the season
"They're stacked," Traip head coach Eric Lane said
"We couldn't stop Riley Provencher or Brady Plante
and we struggled at slowing them down at all."
Traip scored on Max Jordan's 38-yard run in the second quarter
and Phin Fifield's 60-yard kick return in the third quarter
but not enough to do any damage," Lane said
Traip Academy will play at Spruce Mountain Friday at 7 p.m

That somebody was the Bishop Guertin High School Cardinals

6 Timberlane Regional to advance to the Division I softball quarterfinals
best we’ve played so far,” Guertin coach Dakota Bilodeau said
The Cardinals came in as the 11th seed at 10-8

It stayed that way until the Cards scored three in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Mack Bowen and Gabby Gillette
Sophie Bildeau and Gianna Bellino got things started with base hits

The Santuit Pond landing is off Timberlane Drive
John Augustino of Marstons Mills puts his boat in the water at the Santuit Pond landing off Timberlane Drive on Tuesday
He said the water is as clear as he has seen it in about 10 years
Mashpee has been named the recipient of nearly $1.7 million for town landing improvements to increase resilience to harmful algal blooms in Santuit Pond
the Healey-Driscoll administration announced that it is awarding $52.4 million in grants to various communities in Massachusetts to bolster climate resiliency measures
It is the most funding ever awarded through the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program (MVP)
which is set to receive $1,669,956 for increasing resilience to harmful algal blooms in Santuit Pond
something both the town and Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe have been working toward for a number of years
but they have a close partnership with the Tribe with this project,” said Danielle Burney
deputy communications director of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA)
The announcement from the governor’s office also said the EEA is providing an additional $7 million to towns affected by inland flooding last year
The funding awarded for Santuit Pond will go toward the construction of town landing improvements that will help mitigate water quality issues in the area
including improved stormwater management and site reconfiguration
Mashpee has already received two rounds of MVP funding
The town received MVP action grants in 2022 and 2023 to address stormwater runoff
The funds were used to design a concept for Santuit Pond’s town landing that offers climate resilience and water quality measures
The MVP Program has awarded 71 projects in grants
seven for regional planning agencies and two for Tribes
The program provides local leadership with resources and funding from the state to manage climate change issues such as inland flooding
The newly awarded MVP funds will also support stormwater improvements and reduce phosphorus loads in Santuit Pond
In May the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s Department of Natural Resources got the green light from the town to seek additional funding through a Section 319 Nonpoint Source Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
The deadline for grant applications was in May; if awarded
the project will undergo the first treatment in 2025 and the second in 2026
The grant will reimburse 90 percent of project costs
Mashpee also has plans to include a gated entrance
there are plans to reconfigure one of two boat launch areas and to dedicate spaces to nonmotorized boats
shoreline fishing and the history and cultural significance of Santuit Pond for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe
The US Environmental Protection Agency and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection work closely together to regulate stormwater runoff in Mashpee through a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System
The permit pays close attention to watersheds with impaired water bodies
Healey and EEA Secretary Rebecca Tapper announced the additional funding in September in Leominster
a town that experienced severe inland flooding last year
our communities need more support dealing with climate change
especially when it comes to reducing flooding,” Ms
“We are going all in to provide every resource.”
Tapper added that the EEA is committed to making “serious investments” in local projects
in order to improve and protect “the health and safety of Massachusetts residents.”
