A teenager from Toccoa was killed in a wreck Tuesday afternoon in southern Stephens County
A report from the Georgia State Patrol said the single-vehicle crash happened on New Hope Road near Gulley Road when a Ford Ranger pickup truck
was going east on New Hope Road through a left-hand curve
Investigators said Bowen failed to maintain his lane and the truck went off the shoulder of the road and down an embankment
where it overturned and hit a utility pole
Bowen was taken by helicopter to a local trauma center
Georgia State Patrol investigators said impairment is suspected in the crash and that Bowen was not wearing a seatbelt
No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no other injuries were reported

A Stephens County man who fled a Hall County rehabilitation center was captured on Tuesday in a house in Toccoa
of Toccoa was apprehended by Stephens County authorities after they received an anonymous tip that he was back in Toccoa
the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit conducted a search warrant at a residence on Mae Drive in Toccoa and located McCoy
McCoy was arrested on the following charges: warrant service for Felony Probation Violation on three counts
Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
and Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers
He was transported to the Stephens County Jail without incident
was also at the residence during the search and investigators believed she assisted McCoy in hiding
Smith was arrested and transported to the Stephens County Jail on charges of Hindering/Apprehending a Criminal
McCoy had warrants for felony probation violation out of Dawson
and Stephens counties for charges including Burglary in the 1st Degree
Criminal Damage to Property in the 2nd Degree
and Felony Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers.
McCoy was on probation for previous convictions in Dawson County including Terroristic Threats and Criminal Damage in the 2nd Degree
He has multiple previous violent convictions out of Stephens County including Burglary in the 1st Degree
McCoy also has multiple previous charges for fleeing and/or obstructing law enforcement
the CSU determined McCoy to be a threat to public safety and launched an immediate investigation into his whereabouts
The CSU set up surveillance around a residence where McCoy was allegedly hiding
Hall County Sheriff’s Office investigators also received anonymous tips confirming McCoy was in Stephens County

you leave your hometown only to find yourself coming back years later
That was the case for the Brent and Katherine Sanders
who were born and raised in Stephens County and returned more than a decade ago when he got a call to be the senior pastor at First Baptist Church of Toccoa
located at the intersection of Tugalo Street and Prather Bridge Road
Brent graduated from Stephens County High School in 2003 and went on to attend North Georgia College and State University
he completed a master of Divinity program at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest
“I want to live a life where I am daily dying to the world and constantly living in light of what Christ has done for me
by foremost leading my family closer to God
and then discipling friends that God has placed in my life
so others who don’t know Christ will see Him through me,” a statement by Sanders says on the First Baptist of Toccoa website
Katherine works in the Habersham County Schools System as a teacher at Habersham Central High School
Brent and Katherine have been married since 2007 and have three children
“We were in the same fourth grade class together
and then both went off to college,” Brent said
“She went to Clemson and then I went to North Georgia [Technical College] in Dahlonega
so we did long distance dating for four years.”
Brent said he felt God was calling him to the ministry
I feel like you’re calling me to something
but the thing is I don’t want to work in a church,’” Brent joked
“I may have been the only person in seminary saying I don’t want to work in a church.”
he discovered he would need two years of experience working in a church
Brent and Katherine worked in a small church outside Wake Forest
He fell in love working at a church and realized that is what God had in store for the Sanders
and were getting ready to graduate seminary,” Brent said
The couple began searching for churches about an hour out from Toccoa only to realize that
there was nothing wrong with coming back to their roots
Brent has been with First Baptist of Toccoa since August 2012
and said he loves the community he has been surrounded by in Stephens County
He has been the lead pastor since former pastor David Ritcey retired
That is evident when he and his family are shopping at the grocery store and he gets stopped by community members or his church parishioners
said we’d love to move back to Toccoa,” Brent Sanders said
We love the small town feel of just being able to know people and just having that sense of community where

Hurricane Helene ripped through Georgia and Toccoa at the end of September

- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested Corey Bryant
and charged him with malice murder in connection to the death of Angela Baker
Baker was found dead in her East Franklin Street home by family members on Nov
The Toccoa Police Department requested GBI assistance in the investigation later that day
who was previously in a relationship with Baker
was located and arrested shortly after Baker's body was discovered
he was taken into custody on charges related to a separate fight that occurred earlier on Nov
GBI agents uncovered evidence linking Bryant to Baker's death
The case remains active, and the GBI encourages anyone with information to contact their Regional Investigative Office in Cleveland at 706-348-4866 or the GBI Tipline at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted online at gbi.georgia.gov or through the "See Something, Send Something" mobile app.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

GA (FOX Carolina) - The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office said one person has been taken to the hospital following a crash at Stephens County High School on Friday morning
the crash took place on White Pine Road and was causing delays
Officials said the road was closed as first responders assist with the accident
The sheriff’s office said one individual was taken to the hospital with minor injuries

Thomas Hatchett is a board-certified OB-GYN with nearly four decades of experience according to a press release from NGPG
along with certified nurse midwife Brittney Barron will join Coyne to provide OB-GYN care in Toccoa

Barron notably delivered the first baby at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Habersham when the hospital joined Northeast Georgia Health System last year

A Stephens County man faces a charge of possessing a hybrid wolf without a permit after the animal was recently captured when its owner released it in the woods near Toccoa
according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources
Hood said Monday that the DNR contacted another facility to capture the wolf-dog
which was transported to another facility that is legally permitted to have such animals
when Hood said he was made aware of a wolf sighting
“He kept it in captivity until it got to the point he was no longer able to keep it contained
so he released it near his neighborhood in Toccoa,” Hood said
“It’s actually a wolf-dog – a hybrid – but it’s still illegal in Georgia to have."

The female dog was friendly toward its owner
it did show aggression toward other domesticated animals and people if you got too close,” he said
but it put public safety at risk after it was released
They will revert to their ways when put into a predicament to defend themselves
it is illegal to possess a number of animals without a permit issued by the state
The animals include many native wildlife species such as raccoons
Exotic animals such as ostriches and monkeys also require a permit
Two exotic animals that are allowed as pets are European ferrets and sugar sliders.
