A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after sheriff's deputies discovered his car in Dyes Inlet Tuesday night
According to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office
a 22-year-old man from Poulsbo is believed to have submerged his car in the water at Tracyton boat launch
Officers responded to a call at around 10:30 p.m.
and when they arrived the vehicle was on the boat ramp
several yards into where the tide had come in
After tracking wet footprints on the ground
who was sopping wet and smelled strongly of alcohol
The suspect allegedly admitted he had been drinking and claimed he did not realize what had happened until he noticed the water at his feet
KCSO said he told officers he was unsure how his car ended up in the water
but he escaped the vehicle before it filled with water
Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue launched a boat at the scene to conduct a search for passengers in the car
though KCSO said the driver had been alone in the vehicle
The driver is in custody at the Kitsap County Jail and is scheduled to appear at Kitsap County Superior Court to face a DUI charge
Colorful lights and a bright star have illuminated a tall Tracyton evergreen tree each Christmas season since the early 1940s
but when they come down later this year for inspection
The 121-foot Douglas fir planted in front of the Tracyton United Methodist Church – long claimed to be one of the tallest Christmas trees in the nation – is adorned with nearly 600 lights spread along 12 hundred foot-long strings
The tree lighting was made a tradition over 70 years ago by volunteer firefighters who climbed the tree to hang the lights
said Tracyton Community Library volunteer Ursula Volwiler
the lights have been hung using a boom truck and must be taken down for inspection every few years as severe weather takes its toll
removing and rehanging the lights will rack up a bill of $5,300
Volunteers from the Tracyton Community Library and the Tracyton United Methodist Church put on the Tracyton Community Tree Lighting Ceremony every year
Onlookers count down to one before the tree lights up and children visit Santa Claus as volunteers provide cookies
“The neighbors come together and gather and talk to each other
so it's much more than just turning on the lights,” Volwiler said
“I think it's become sort of a symbol for this tiny little community… and it's part of that community pride
But what people don't realize is how much work is involved in putting this on.”
which finances the event and tree maintenance
is sustained by donations and managed by the library
there is only enough money in the pot to take down the lights
They’re about $2,000 short of the bill to put them back up
The library’s volunteer pool is aging out of being able to do the work and donations are running low
sitting amongst shelves of books in the small library with Volwiler
Volwiler went door to door among neighboring businesses looking for community assistance and even asked the Port of Tracyton Board of Commissioners for sponsorship
“At this point it would take major donations and contributions to keep this tradition going
which also begs the question as to whether the community thinks it is worth doing,” Volwiler and Woolsey wrote in a letter to the Kitsap Sun
so it could be possible to string the lights from the roof of the library to the adjacent drain field to emulate the shape of a tree instead
But this is not the first time the tree lighting has found itself in the woods
“It's almost every year where this happens,” Woolsey said of the insufficient funding and dwindling volunteer interest
Letters: Community needed to keep Tracyton tradition alive
the star on top of the tree was blown off during a storm to land among the branches
Donations have come through in the past when the library issued a call for aid to its patrons and email list
and even got a deal reinstalling the lights several years ago from a freelance tree climber
they are calling for donations and volunteers too
Further information about donations and the tree lighting ceremony can be found on the library’s website at tracytonlibrary.org
The Tracyton Community Tree Lighting will be held at the Tracyton United Methodist Church on Sunday

Just more than a year after telling investigators that a 25-year-old man had shot himself before crashing a car along Tracyton Boulevard near Silverdale
2023 crash appeared in Kitsap County Superior Court on Tuesday after being charged with manslaughter
was arrested and booked into Kitsap County Jail on Monday
and charged with one count of first-degree manslaughter
which includes a maximum penalty of life in prison
for the reckless death of Bradley Michael Joshua Smith last September
Streun's initial statements to law enforcement
were deemed "implausible and extremely unlikely," according to charging documents
According to a probable cause statement for Streun's arrest
Kitsap County Sheriff's deputies arrived at a single-vehicle crash on Tracyton Boulevard at NW Selbo Road
and appeared to have struck a power pole and series of mailboxes
clearly in pain and with blood on his shirt
Deputies found Smith dead in the front seat of the Subaru
with a gunshot wound on the right side of his head
and an hour later spoke to a KCSO detective
Streun said that the two men were friends and had been at a birthday party at a Silverdale restaurant that evening
The report notes that Streun appeared intoxicated
and he confirmed drinking beer and hard alcohol at two different locations
and said the two intended to go to a third restaurant
They had incorrectly gone to the wrong location
and were returning to Silverdale when the crash occurred
Streun claimed Smith had waved a loaded gun in the car while the two were listening to music
Streun said that he had not felt threatened by Smith
and admitted he had handled the gun in the car as well
Detectives found a Smith and Wesson 9 mm handgun in the car
which was registered to Smith and had a loaded magazine and a round in the chamber
as Streun told detectives Smith planned to move to Florida the next day
25 by Kitsap County Medical Examiner Lindsay Harle
found small abrasions known as "powder tattooing" around the victim's wound
made by gunpowder particles that can indicate the distance a shot was fired from
and Harle said Smith may have been shot by as far as 2 feet away
Detectives wrote that the finding led them to request further testing to determine what distance Smith was shot from
A forensics team in California was contacted to study the shooting and evidence
and in May a scientist determined Smith was shot at a distance of between 10 and 15 inches
using a Subaru WRX offered by a local dealership
attached to the muzzle of the gun recovered from the scene
Two detectives that approximately matched Smith's height and weight attempted to pull the trigger at each of the distances
and even at 10 inches each detective noted the difficulty in squeezing the trigger
They also tested the gun while sitting in the passenger's seat
aimed toward the driver at the three distances
"From this position I could easily squeeze the trigger with no strain or additional effort."
Allen Tencer of the Harborview Biomechanics Laboratory
also concluded that it would not have been possible for Smith to pull the trigger of a gun pointed at himself while in the car
writing it is "unlikely he fired the gun at himself."
Smith's family testified that Smith was left-handed
and his right hand would have been on the stick shift of the Subaru as it was moving
They also told detectives their son was "militant" about gun safety and had taken firearms safety courses
Smith's family also provided detectives photos from a Snapchat video
apparently made earlier on the night of Sept
that show him playing with a gun that matched the one in the car
who is dressed the same in the video as he was seen after the crash
is shown in court documents as pointing the barrel of the gun through the zipper of his pants
and a second Snapchat image shows Streun holding the same gun in August
Streun was scheduled to make an initial appearance at 3 p.m
Jail records show he is still held on $500,000 bail
This story will be updated to include Streun's plea during his scheduled arraignment
Detectives investigating an armed robbery earlier this month of a gas station near Bremerton say they identified one of the suspects after he left his thumbprint on a package of Oreo cookies

Bell was booked into the Kitsap County Jail early Friday morning
The same two suspects are believed to have robbed a Silverdale 76 station at 10023 Old Frontier Road shortly after midnight on Nov
but the charges filed by prosecutors against Bell are for the Tracyton holdup
two people with masks were accused of raiding the cash register
with a shorter male holding the cashier at gunpoint from the counter while a taller person wearing Crocs sandals approached from behind to take the money
The taller of the two was observed on a security camera as handling a few items before the robbery started and then setting them back down
Those items included a package of chow mein and a package of Oreos
Detectives were able to lift a fingerprint from the package of cookies
An anonymous source told investigators that they believed Bell was involved in the robbery
and investigators found fingerprints from Bell in a law enforcement database that investigators allege match the fingerprint on the Oreos
BREMERTON — Contractors for the city of Bremerton will install the final section of guardrail along Tracyton Beach Road this fall
closing the gap on a dangerous stretch of road that winds along the Port Washington Narrows.
Bremerton’s City Council approved a contract for the work
will install about 560 feet of guardrail between Pat Carey Vista and Sheridan Road
according to Bremerton public works operations manager Dave Carter.
and is expected to take a few days to complete
Traffic will be limited to one alternating lane while crews install the guardrail
“I’m happy we’re getting this done,” Bremerton Mayor Greg Wheeler said
“We’re getting to it before it starts getting dark and wet and icy.”
The student, Kaitlyn Myers, is one of two people to have died on Tracyton Beach Road in the last five years. Brandon Ready, a 37-year-old Belfair man, died in 2018 when his car left the road near Pat Carey Vista
A half-mile section of the road is owned by Kitsap County
which installed about 1,750 feet of guardrail there in 2020
according to Tina Nelson with Kitsap County Public Works
the city used a $1.6 million federal grant to add high friction surface treatment and install additional guardrails on Tracyton Beach Road and West Belfair Valley Road
Completing the last section of guardrail has been on the city’s project list since that last installation in 2018
“It’s a very important feature
if we can save a life or save a serious injury by keeping somebody from going into the water
by all means we need to jump on that,” Wheeler said.

TRACYTON — The Erwins were looking to tame weeds when they bought two goats for their backyard about 12 years ago
What they got instead was a neighborhood attraction
became a daily stop on Painter Street for school children heading home and even for out-of-towners curious about the rumors of an affable goat couple
Jill could be spotted on the roof of the goats' barn before running to the fence for some apple chunks or bread
but she was the goat with a personality," Sam Erwin said
The dog scaled a fence March 1 in the Erwins' yard and attacked Jill
grabbed a broom and attempted to fend off the dog
“The dog never let go of that goat,” he said
Neighbor Shirley Siegel watched in horror from her home as the dog killed the goat
Erwin tied the leash to a log so it could not leave
Erwin contemplated getting a crowbar but thought better of it
and he was going to risk his own life intervening
Officers with the Kitsap Humane Society showed up to investigate about an hour after the attack
They took the dog and the remains of the goat
“Thank God there were no children around,” Erwin said
The dog is being held on a "mandatory stray hold" at the Humane Society because no owner could be located after the incident occurred
according to Humane Society spokeswoman Denise Caruso
A formal process will determine whether the dog
The Erwins informed the officers that they felt the dog should be killed for the safety of other animals and even other humans
Stevens confirmed Tuesday that the Humane Society had heard from the owner of the dog but offered no other details
neighboring families and friends have sent the Erwins letters of condolence and posted flowers on the fence where so many got to know Jill
The Erwins have been touched by the outpouring of support but said they will not be able to get more goats
Sam Erwin admits he never thought he could love a goat
But after the couple purchased Jack and Jill from 4-H at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds
And Jack and Jill — so named because they would constantly head “up and down the hill,” Erwin said — soon became a popular stop for walkers along Painter Street
“She’d get up on that roof and do a jig for anybody,” Shirley Holland-Erwin said of Jill's bucking about on her own home
who often picks up his 10-year-old grandson
She’d enthusiastically run to the fence line
you’d always see someone by the fence,” he said
The Erwins have put handmade cards from neighborhood kids on their coffee table
they become emotional when thinking about their pet goat
"She was very well loved," Holland-Erwin said
BREMERTON – The owner of a popular Tracyton bar hopes he can breathe new life into the former Olympic Cinemas movie theater on Riddell Road – just as soon they’re allowed to open
plans to transform the four-screen theater into a combination movie house and eatery with pub food
are taking over operations of the theater from Faraway Entertainment
the Bainbridge Island-based company that runs several independent theaters in Western Washington
Alford said he enjoyed watching movies at Olympic Cinemas because he wanted to support a local business and the theater was less busy than others in the area
For the opening of the movie “Avengers: Endgame,” last April
Alford bought out 44 seats at the theater for bar staff and friends to go and watch the movie
“I would look around and it would just pop into my head
‘Man the things I could do with this place,’” Alford said
Plans for theater, which has been dubbed the Tracyton Movie House, were in the works before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. Faraway Entertainment ran Olympic Cinemas from 2006 until this year when the company elected to not renew its lease
When SeeFilm Cinemas opened in downtown Bremerton in 2012
attendance at Olympic Cinemas plummeted “overnight,” Brein said
a regular occurrence for independent movie theaters
“If a new theater opens with more screens
your customers will happily speed to that theater until something newer opens,” Brein said
When its lease came up for renewal earlier this year
Faraway Entertainment decided to part ways with the theater
“It was a good chance to depart because the lease was over,” Brein said
But the shutdown has given the new owners time to plan for an official opening
Renovations are underway to retrofit the theaters
upgrade the concession area and update the décor
Tracyton Movie House’s arrangement will feature several chairs grouped together around a table
The setup will allow for movie-goers to eat and drink while they watch and is unintentionally social-distancing friendly
“We’ve made it so that when you walk to your seat
you never have to make anyone stand up,” Orosz said
The new concessions menu will include a mix of bar food – including Tracyton Public House’s famous wings – theater fare like popcorn and hotdogs
intended to be “better than the average movie theater,” are in the works
Alford and Orosz want to avoid the pitfalls of the movie business by expanding options for customers using the theater’s four large screens
Theaters will be available for rent for parties or to play video games
The largest auditorium will be outfitted with a stage for music concerts and comedy sets
Alford hopes to stage arcade games and pinball machines in the lobby
“We envision this as kind of being a focal point for the Bremerton area,” Alford said
The pair hope that the public will be itching for social interaction following several months of quarantine
An official opening date for the movie house hasn’t been set and depends on the state of the pandemic and state’s phased re-opening plan
Movie theaters can reopen at 50% under Phase 3 of the plan
which Alford estimated could be July at the earliest
The pandemic has also caused movie studios to push the release dates of many big summer blockbusters
a potential opening date could be August to accommodate the release of “Wonder Woman 1984.”
“We’re going to adapt with it and when we have the ability to open up we’re going to open up,” Orosz said
Brein thinks the new owners are well-positioned to succeed, despite current economic conditions. The cinema, located in the corner of the Redwood Plaza, has ample parking and is close to several new planned developments in vicinity of Riddell Road
“We have always said that when the shopping center across the street matures
when that's redeveloped when the multiple housing units a block away come to fruition
that theater is going to be a good little neighborhood theater,” Brein said
“These guys may breathe some life into this facility.”
A 35-year-old East Bremerton man killed in a vehicle crash Wednesday near Tracyton was identified by the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office as Ean Shane Swanson
Investigators reported alcohol and speed contributed to the crash
Deputies and firefighters were called at about 12:09 a.m
to the 5400 block of Hansberry Street NW where the van Swanson was driving apparently failed to follow a curve in the road near the intersection of NE Vena Street
according to a statement Friday from office
The 1993 Chevrolet Astro crossed into the oncoming lane
crashed through a guardrail and continued down a 20-foot ravine
Swanson was removed from the wreck and taken to Harrison Medical Center
Evidence from the scene indicated Swanson was traveling at a speed “much greater” than the posted 30 mph speed limit
Further investigation found Swanson had a “significant” blood alcohol level
BREMERTON – Emergency crews battled a fire at an abandoned house on Tracyton Beach Road Saturday afternoon into the evening
Kitsap County Sheriff's Office spokesman Scott Wilson said callers reported around 3:30 p.m
that the run-down two-story house was fully involved in flames
Multiple callers reported seeing three people leaving the area of the fire
Those three individuals were contacted by Bremerton police just up the road
deputy fire marshal for the city of Bremerton
said it's unknown if anyone was in the house at the time of the fire
but said it appeared that transients were living there
but it looks like squatters were in the house using some type of alternate heating source," he said
Tracyton Beach Road was closed while crews worked at the scene
TRACYTON — Two adults and four pets safely escaped a house fire that started around noon on Huckle Drive
according to Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue
a woman reported that she saw black smoke coming from a downstairs bedroom
Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews responded at 12:24 p.m. Units from Bremerton Fire Department and Navy Region Northwest also responded
three dogs and one cat were safely outside the home
Public Information Officer for Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue
who attempted to use a fire extinguisher to snuff the flames
was transported to Harrison Bremerton for smoke inhalation as a precaution.
The fast-moving fire was fully extinguished at 12:54 p.m.
It spread into the second floor and attic, "it was pretty stubborn," LiMarzi said
The crews had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate
The home is currently uninhabitable and American Red Cross is on the scene assisting the occupants
The Kitsap County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire
TRACYTON — People who knew Kaitlyn Emily Myers remember her as an adventurous and giving 18-year-old who planned to become an elementary school teacher
But her friends and family say nothing defined her as much as the radiant smile she was eager to share
Myers died Saturday at Harrison Medical Center
about a week after her car slid off Tracyton Beach Road on Jan
1 and landed upside down in the Port Washington Narrows
Firefighters were able to restore her heartbeat
Myers was enrolled at Olympic College and had planned to transfer to Central or Western Washington universities to earn her bachelor's degree
going shopping or on Starbucks outings and often eating french fries
"Kaitlyn was one who'd like to go out and adventure all the time," said Aira Bautista
who met Myers in the seventh grade at Fairview Middle School
a neighbor and close friend of the Myers family
recalled their move to Tracyton six years ago
who warmed up to it by spotting the house next door and the girl inside
"We got the OK from our daughter because of that smile," Wilson said
She had a way of connecting with generations outside her own
Her mother recalled her ability to talk to adults from a young age and her love of working with kids
which propelled her down the teaching path
"She could relate to children so easily," said friend Natanya Phan
who'd met Myers in the third grade at PineCrest Elementary
Myers was employed at All Star Lanes & Casino in Silverdale since she was 15
even just her smile would make you feel better," said Taylor Terpone
a childhood friend and co-worker at All Star Lanes
She also volunteered each week at PineCrest
and had been a substitute teacher at the Olympic Educational Service District on National Avenue in Bremerton
Friends and family remained with Myers throughout her time at Harrison
until doctors said she was unable to recover

PORT ORCHARD — After an unusually long deliberation of more than five days, a Kitsap County Superior Court jury Wednesday found a man guilty of all counts
in the December fatal robbery of 89-year-old Robert Archie Hood
put his head on the table in front of him and cried as Judge Jennifer Forbes read the verdict from the jury of six men and six women
as the jurors found Pry guilty of three aggravators on the three main charges against him
The aggravators will give Forbes the authority to exceed the standard range sentence
The jury declined to convict Robert Lavalle Davis
including accomplice to first-degree murder

Testimony suggested the defendants believed he had as much as $1 million saved

He told investigators that he entered Hood's house with Pry
Prosecutors allege it was Rodgers Jones who first became aware of Hood
is charged with being an accomplice to first-degree murder
Prosecutors alleged that after Pry and Rodgers Jones beat Hood and left him tied up they went to a Fife motel room with friends to smoke meth and attempt to steal from Hood's bank accounts

A witness said Davis drove Rodgers Jones and Pry to rob Hood
but Bumguardner said she would have liked to have heard more evidence about his involvement before believing Davis was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt
Kitsap Sheriff's Detective Jason Bowman said that he was satisfied with the verdict and that he didn't feel the acquittal of Davis on the most serious charges was a missed opportunity
'I think we knew going in that the charges against Davis would be the most difficult to prove
so I'm not surprised the jury acquitted on murder and robbery,' he said
The state's case against Davis was dependent on witness testimony

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Chad Enright represented the state in court Wednesday
He complimented the work of the two prosecutors

Enright acknowledged the case against Davis was difficult to prove but said Pry was more deeply involved in Hood's death
defense attorneys and investigators met with jurors following the verdict — a voluntary meeting for jurors

Enright said from that meeting prosecutors gathered information about the strengths and weaknesses of the case for the upcoming trials of Rodgers Jones and Dudley Pry
'We are going to take all that information and look at the cases pending,' he said

Jay Inslee announced this week that he would ease restrictions on some activities and businesses in Washington
The governor put a pause on his four-part economic reopening plan in July after a spike in coronavirus cases
Inslee said the rollback was the result of “ongoing conversations with businesses about how to do these activities safely.”
Under the new rules
movie theaters in counties in Phase 2 can open at 25% capacity as long as households keep six feet of distance between each other and wear masks
Theaters in counties in Phase 3 can open at 50%
Masks can be taken off to eat or drink while in the theater but must be worn at all other times
Theater operators are responsible for implementing safety measures in ticket lines
The theater industry has been hit hard by the pandemic
with many of the biggest Hollywood studios pushing blockbusters films back to 2021 or beyond
“We were happy to get that news because we’ve been closed now for over seven months
and we see restaurants opening and churches opening and all the other entities
and we are like many of those really focused on safety
and it’s time,” said Jeff Brein
managing partner of the Bainbridge Island-based Faraway Entertainment
Faraway Entertainment operates eight independent movie theaters in Western Washington
Faraway will reopen the Roxy Theatre in Bremerton on Friday with a showing of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet”
one of only a few planned summer blockbusters to be released in recent months
Brein plans to open the Bainbridge Island and Lynwood theaters next Friday
Faraway’s theaters will operate seven days a week
While movies theaters across the country have been slowly reopening
many theaters in major markets like New York and Los Angeles remain closed
Studios don’t want to risk spending hundreds of millions of dollars creating and marketing a movie until those markets reopen
but we’ve got to meet in the middle somewhere because if
the movie industry in this country closes down
it hurts the studio and it hurts us,” Brein said
SEEFilm Cinemas in Bremerton is hoping to open next Friday
While the relaxed restrictions are welcome news
only being able to fill a quarter of the seats still presents challenges
meaning about 300 people can be in the building at a time under the new rules
“I’m happy that he’s final letting us open. The hard part is going to be the 25 percent
because we still have to pay rent and payroll and power
but we got to get the doors open,” Stitt said
Stitt plans to open on a Friday-Monday schedule with three movies a day to start
The theater will add more showtimes depending on the community response
SEEFilm’s ticketing software is set up so that individuals can’t purchase seats next to anyone else unless they’re in a group
Longer wait times in between movies will allow employees to deep clean the theater before each showing
Because of the dearth of new movies being released
Stitt is working to get some seasonal favorites
like “A Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Hocus Pocus,” to show ahead of Halloween
“We’re excited to get open and try and get as close to normal as possible,” Stitt said
Business partners Jim Alford and Bernie Orosz are in a slightly different predicament
as they’re attempting to open a movie theater during the pandemic
located in the former Olympic Cinemas in Redwood Plaza on Riddell Road
restaurant and arcade that will also host events
said the move to ease restrictions took him by surprise
“I'm happy that we're going in that direction
I am disappointed in the delivery,” Alford said
So to just all of a sudden have that dropped
Alford and Orosz initially wanted to open their theater in August
superhero movie “Wonder Woman 1984.” The pause allowed them to work on renovations to the theater and apply for the permits necessary to open
But the pair say they would have made different decisions during the remodel process if they knew they were going to be allowed to open this month
The Tracyton Movie House is still waiting on a certificate of occupancy from Kitsap County
we're opening the doors,” Orosz said
owners are confident the theater will do well because it isn’t reliant solely on big blockbusters
The movie house will have a full bar and food menu and plans to do theater rentals for events
“We're going to do everything we can
everything that we want to do we're going to do basically as soon as we can
it's all going to be based upon a schedule,” Orosz said
About 80% of AMC theaters in the country are open right now
A representative for both theater companies did not respond to requests for comment from the Kitsap Sun
Kitsap Regional LibraryInslee’s new guidance also allows public libraries to provide some services in-person
Masks are required and occupancy is capped at 25% in Phase 2
Kitsap Regional Library’s physical locations across the county have been closed since March
KRL has been providing curbside services like book pickup and drop-off since then
“Our reaction to this is we are excited because we want to get something that resembles more normal library service
and it’s been a long time coming,” library director Jill Jean said
KRL will start curbside printing services next week
While you won’t be able to browse bookshelves any time soon
library officials hope to allow a small number of people inside to use computers
printers and copy machines beginning in November
“We're hoping for a limited ability to do that where we would absolutely have to control the number of people in our buildings
making sure people are wearing masks,” Jean said
Inslee also relaxed rules for restaurants and pubs by allowing alcohol service until 11 p.m. and increasing the maximum number of people that can sit at one table to six in Phase 2
Group seating is no longer limited to just members of the same household
