“Nathan and his wife Ross moved to Kensington MD in 2019 where they now share a home with Cotton
they quickly realized that buying food for Cotton involved either traversing through 40 minute traffic or buying online
They discovered that other pet parents in their neighborhood also disliked driving through heavy traffic in North Rockville
competing for parking space in Downtown Bethesda
It was immediately clear to Nathan and Ross that there was an unmet hunger for a pet supply store in Kensington
Nathan has been in the pet products industry for more than 15 years now and this has given him the necessary expertise to forge ahead in pet retail with confidence
He has rallied all the experts he knows from the pet industry to educate himself on what it would take to succeed in pet retail
“Independent stores have been getting hammered by online and big box store prices and if you’re going to jump into this business you need to be in the perfect location
carry unique products and give personalized customer service like no other,” says Nathan
it took Nathan and Ross more than a year to secure the perfect location for their store which they decided to name Pets Are Home
they’re part of our family and they fill a big space in our hearts,” says Ross
To celebrate the dogs who have filled their life with so much love
they hired an artist to paint massive murals on their walls
they will see Cotton lying happily on his belly with his tongue out as well as the happy face of Sonny
Nathan’s beloved pug who passed away in 2019
Nathan and Ross opened the doors of Pets Are Home in August 2021
with the vision of providing their customers with a personalized service and a thoughtful selection of products
Pets Are Home is open 7 days a week and happily welcomes all two-legged humans and their four-legged pets.”

The small playground area and the rest of the park remain open
The Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Montgomery County Division and Montgomery Parks are seeking the public’s help regarding a fire that destroyed the Greenbriar Local Park main playground
Greenbriar Local Park is a beautiful 25-acre park
that offers an excellent blend of green space and recreational opportunities and equipment. Interpretive signage and custom playgrounds highlight the park’s theme
“The Journey of Raindrop.” Visitors can learn about watersheds
and wildlife of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay areas while they’re playing
more than 16.5 acres of the 25-acre park are undisturbed

The Travilah Quarry, which yielded crushed stone to build the Intercounty Connector and widen Interstate 270, could become part of the solution to the drinking water supply challenge looming over the District of Columbia
Arlington County and the city of Falls Church
As WTOP first reported in 2016
local water officials have been studying the possibility of utilizing the Travilah Quarry — which is located on Piney Meetinghouse Road in Rockville
Maryland — to provide water storage for local D.C.
Maryland and Virginia water utilities in the event that water from the Potomac River would become unavailable or undrinkable
D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said the House’s Water Resources Development Act of 2022
aims to provide more resiliency for what is currently the sole source of drinking water produced at the Washington Aqueduct
“There is an urgent need for Congress to act to protect the drinking water and other infrastructure of the nation’s capital from serious vulnerabilities,” Norton said in a statement
Army Corps of Engineers to undergo an engineering-and-feasibility study to consider backup water supplies
The aqueduct is one of the few water-processing facilities with only one source
which serves most of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties
draws 30% of the water it sends to customers from the Patuxent River
which serves Fairfax and Prince William counties
gets a portion of its water from the Occoquan Reservoir
“We only have about 24 to 48 hours of water supply available should the Potomac River become unavailable to us,” said Tom Jacobus
the now-retired general manager of the Washington Aqueduct
intentionally — it could be very damaging to us for a period of time.”
The Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin retained the Black & Veatch engineering firm to evaluate whether the Travilah Quarry could be a suitable water storage facility
non-regulatory interstate compact agency of states in the Potomac basin
right now it would have about 8 billion gallons of water,” Jacobus said in 2016
“You could produce water for about 14 days
and we believe that’s a reasonable amount of time that whatever made the river unavailable to us could be cleaned up
The study by Black & Veatch projected that by 2060
the quarry would have a capacity of 17 billion gallons
executive director of the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin
said having a backup water supply is crucial for times of drought
“What we’re worried about is a turbocharged drought.”
He said using quarries after the stone has been removed has become popular with businesses and water suppliers
“Loudoun County has quarries that will serve as a reservoir,” said Nardolilli
“Fairfax has plans to do the same.”
The study, commissioned by the ICPRB, provided options for pumping water uphill from the Potomac River to the quarry
Pipes — and gravity — would carry the water from the Travilah Quarry to the Washington Aqueduct
which is located along MacArthur Boulevard near the D.C./Montgomery County border
“We’ve been briefing stakeholders and local governments
‘Let’s see if we can get the federal government to fund the engineering-and-feasibility study,’ said Nardolilli
we still need appropriations,” said Nardolilli
“We’re early in the process — it’s not going to happen tomorrow.”

WASHINGTON — Four young people attended an underage drinking party before their car crashed in North Potomac Thursday night
Shedding tears, friends and family came to a makeshift memorial at the site. They left with flowers, a football, a basketball and a team jersey. It is believed all four teens attended Wootton High School in Rockville
Two of them were said to be members of the school’s football team this past season
and injured the driver and another passenger
“The car did appear to go airborne,” says Captain Thomas Didone with Montgomery County police
Montgomery County police identify the driver of the 2006 Acura TSX as 18-year-old Samuel Joseph Ellis of North Potomac
He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries
Police are not identifying the front seat passenger because of the ongoing investigation
That passenger received minor injuries and has been released from the hospital
The two back seat passengers were discovered deceased by first responders
They have have been identified as 18-year-old Alexander Murk
Police say the occupants of the car left the party
and were traveling west in the 13800 block of Dufief Mill Road
when it left the road and hit a tree shortly before midnight
The car ended up in the front yard of a home
and lack of safety restraints as possible factors in the crash
“We found beverage containers that were still chilled to the touch at the collision scene,” Didone says
a speed camera sits on the side of Dufief Mill Road and it is aimed in the direction in which the car was traveling in the seconds before the crash
the camera is turned off at night and won’t be able to aide police in the investigation
Police went to the home of the party in which they believed the teens attended before the crash
Didone says there was an adult at the home ant that citations were issued
Police are investigating the party further and the findings will be presented to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney Office
Prosecutors will then decide on any additional charges in the case
now is the time for parents to talk with their kids about the dangers of drinking
“Good kids make bad decisions and when they are involving alcohol
they often times deal with tragedy,” he says
Montgomery County police plan to continue cracking down on adults who allow kids to drink
“These tragedies will continue until we stop enabling underage drinking,” says Didone
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 240-773-6620
Wootton High School Principal Michael Doran said Friday that staff, grief counselors, and other personnel will be available to students on Monday, and that resources for talking about death and grief as well as alcohol and drugs, are posted on the school’s website.

This is the fourth story in WTOP’s series, Crumbling Capital
scrutinizing the decaying infrastructure in the D.C
region and what’s being done to fix it
WASHINGTON — A Montgomery County quarry that yielded crushed stone to build the Intercounty Connector and widen Interstate 270 could provide a solution to a century-old infrastructure shortcoming that threatens the drinking water of the nation’s capital
The Washington Aqueduct would only have a 24- to 48-hour water supply available if the Potomac were ever to suffer a major contamination event
“It could be very damaging to us for a period of time.”
The Potomac River is the sole water supply for the District of Columbia
Arlington County and the City of Falls Church and the primary water supply for two other local water utilities
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission
draws 30 percent of the water it sends to customers from the Patuxent River
Jacobus said local water officials have quietly been seeking an additional water source if water from the Potomac River can’t safely be used
“The three utilities, and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, along with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments have been working over the last several years to look at alternatives to get better interdependencies
to have more resilience in our system,” Jacobus said
Jacobus said the Travilah Quarry may be “the hole in the ground,” he and other water executives have been seeking
right now it would have about 8 billion gallons of water,” said Jacobus
Extensive testing has been done to see whether the Travilah quarry could safely hold water
“Scientists looked at the Travilah to see if there were minerals that would naturally be occurring that would make it unsuitable as a water storage reservoir,” said Jacobus
“The indications are there is nothing that would prevent us from using that.”
Although the size and structure of the Travilah Quarry seem desirable to local water officials
at least one sticking point exists — the quarry’s owners aren’t done with it
“All quarries have a finite life span,” said Richard Freedman
director of land and environment for the Mid-Atlantic region for Aggregate Industries
the United Kingdom-based company that owns the property
“This quarry has about 60 years of life left.”
Freedman said the quarry company has allowed water utility consultants to conduct scientific testing on its property
Jacobus and Freedman said it was premature to discuss how the water utilities might use or purchase the Travilah Quarry
but we’re always interested in the conscientious repurposing of our property,” Freedman said
“I don’t know if it will end up being a reservoir
but that’s a possibility the company would explore and be receptive to.”
the quarry continues to provide material for local construction projects
And the potential water storage capacity will only increase as the quarry grows deeper
but some is at ground level,” said Freedman of the quarry’s current dimensions
Another advantage of the Travilah Quarry site is that it could feed all three utilities and crosslink the three water systems
providing a level of redundancy and protection missing today
the urgency to identify and secure an additional water source is heightened in the national capital region
which security experts have long considered a prime target for terrorism
“Having interconnections among the water utilities
so one could pick up the slack that the other can’t meet
and having water stored off the Potomac would be an extraordinarily valuable asset,” said Jacobus
“It would contribute measurably to the security of the region
and all the activities that occur in the region
which are vital to the nation’s well-being.”
But other risks pose threats to the area’s water supply
whether it be drought or some other interruption to service
has massive implications,” said WSSC’s Chief of Plant Operations J.C
“It would require a huge response at all levels of government.”
But the Travilah option would require major infrastructure investments
Tunnels would need to be built to connect the quarry to the Washington Aqueduct
including tunnels underneath the Potomac River
While acknowledging the benefits of off-river storage, Fairfax Water declined to address specifics of how the Travilah alternative could impact the region. The utility recently signed a long-term agreement to turn a portion of a quarry owned by Vulcan Materials into a reservoir by 2035
Jacobus acknowledged the project would be a massive undertaking
but he remains committed to the project’s purpose and scope
“It is an opportunity to serve the region and give it a degree of independence and resilience that we currently don’t have,” said Jacobus

2012 at 1:05 am ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}It all came down to spelling the word “malice”
Travilah Elementary School’s Reethi Padmanabhan earned the right to be her school’s first ever representative at the Fourth Annual Scripps Regional Spelling Bee for Montgomery County
Travilah had held its own school-wide spelling bees in the past
but this is the first year they’ve fully participated in the Scripps Howard event
Assistant Principal Debbie Ambrose told Patch
“We’re very excited about it and we’re very proud of [Reethi],” Ambrose said
“She has worked really hard and after our school bee has continued to work very hard to be prepared for the next level.”
Saturday’s regional spelling bee features representatives from 37 public and private schools throughout the county
The winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington
Before potentially conquering the county and the country Padmanabhan
featuring 35 students from third to fifth grade
The school’s spelling club provided a weekly platform for many of its competitors to prepare
adding the club has met once per week after school every week since October with the help of a parent volunteer
“[Jill Prater] really took it on and really elevated it as just a great academic kind of competition whereas so much of children’s competition in elementary school is often athletic,” Ambrose said
The spelling club practiced different things related to spelling
the club started doing team spelling contests and mock spelling bees
just volunteering their time after school for kicks to a spelling bee
The Fourth Presbyterian School will host the county spelling bee March 3 at 10 a.m
All members of the Travilah Elementary School community are welcome to attend in support of Padmanabhan
Travilah recognized Pranav Vijay as runner-up and the following students as Top 10: Alan Shen

2011 at 5:50 pm ETTen years since the Montgomery County Department of Transportation first envisioned the Travilah Road enhancement project
which included the addition of a bike trail
pavement widening and leveling of parts of the road between Dufief Mill and Darnestown Roads
the Montgomery County Council had to approve a bill explicitly recognizing the use of local funds for the completion of the project
which exceeded the $12,732,000 limit for individually authorized projects
The total $12,989,000 cost of the project has already been allocated and more than 75 percent was spent on the project's first phase
The Montgomery County Council approved the authorization bill on Tuesday
giving the Department of Transportation the formal go ahead to begin planning phase two
The bill is eligible for a referendum if more than 10,000 sign a petition to put it on the ballot in the next election
the road varied in width and lacked a complete sidewalk
The justification for the project cited 37 car accidents in a three year period and repeated flooding during storms
crews widened the pavement from 22 feet to 24 feet between Nolan Drive and Lake Winds Way
created a left-turn and right-turn lane a the Piney Meetinghouse Road intersection
widened the pavement from 20 feet to 22 feet between Lake Winds Way and Dufief Mill Road
added an 8-foot wide bike trail and a 4-foot grass shoulder and drainage ditch along the north side of the road
The project also included the addition of streetlighting on the south side of the street
which is scheduled to begin in spring 2012
crews will add an 8-foot wide grass shoulder and drainage ditch between 400 feet west of Nolan Drive and Dufief Mill Road and complete the missing 5-foot wide sidewalk on the south side of the road
an estimated half of which was obtained through a practice called "advanced taking"
Department of Transportation deputy director of the construction
DOT is required to contact a homeowner at least three times to discuss the acquisition of a patch of their land to build the bike path or sidewalk
Most of the acquisitions for the 14,400-foot project were less than 10 feet
If the homeowner does not respond or there is a delay in reaching an agreed upon price
DOT will continue construction and take the negotiation to court
Serrano said they will begin analyzing what land needs to be acquired for the sidewalk construction this winter
The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2012

Shaw had always wanted to be a queen of her own parade
Teri Troxell and Amy Bryan gave her a day she would not forget
With makeshift floats they paraded Shaw from Travilah Elementary School to the Travilah Oak Market
and noisemakers and they were treated to candy thrown from the various floats in the lineup
Shaw was crowned "Miss Travilah Oak" under the 350-year-old oak tree
The reigning queen also was honored with a sandwich — The Rene Nicoise — named in her honor by Travilah Oak Market owner Al Vivano
Flower Child Rockville Has Closed Permanently
We’ve been keeping an eye out on Flower Child in the Travilah Square shopping center since it has not reopened ever since COVID restrictions forced many area restaurants to temporarily shutdown as they figured out a plan going forward
Last week we were told by the open Bethesda location that the restaurant chain would reopen their D.C
location first followed by the Rockville location
This morning we were informed by employees of the Bethesda location that the Travilah Square location will not be reopening
2012 at 12:27 pm ETTravilah Elementary School celebrated Dr
Seuss Day with classroom parties and many kids donned their own hat from "Cat In The Hat"
The school also completed its fourth grade wax museum project
"This is when our fourth graders do research and read biographies of famous people," Travilah principal Susan Shenk told Patch in an email
"They then create a wax museum by dressing up in costume
When you press the child’s 'button' they come to life and give a little speech as if they were the person."
A 200,000-square foot building with a five-level parking garage containing up to 562 spaces is currently being constructed for Research and Development use off at 9810 Darnestown Rd next to the Travilah Square shopping center
Building A will be the first of three buildings planned for Parcel N (shown in the images below)
these buildings will form a research and development campus that coordinates effectively with the current life sciences campus
Building A is currently being constructed on Darnestown Road on the northwestern portion of the property
As the first building to be constructed on Parcel N
Building A will be accessed by the existing Loop Driveway that links both Parcels M and N to Darnestown Road and Traville Gateway Drive to the north and east
This access configuration will ultimately allow for improved campus circulation when the northern portion of the Loop Driveway is eliminated and the intersection is provided to the Great Seneca Highway extension
The building will have five floors above grade and a maximum building height of 100 feet
The interior of the building will be constructed with higher ceiling heights (when compared to conventional office uses) and other design elements to accommodate specialized equipment used by R&D tenants
The exterior of the building will feature materials and design elements that create visual interest
particularly on the building’s prominent western elevation facing Traville Gateway Drive and the north elevation facing Darnestown Road
a unified sequence of open spaces in front of the building will consist of a landscaped area and a formal plaza
which will also serve as a vehicular drop-off area
The site design will create a pleasant and safe pedestrian environment and will facilitate easy access between the parking garage and building
located to the south and west of Building A
will have five levels and will provide up to 562 parking spaces
The glass stairwell at the corner of the parking structure serves as a terminus of the open space in front of the building and will provide direct access into the building via internal sidewalks
The Property is within walking distance of the Universities at Shady Grove (to the east)
the Shady Gove Adventist Hospital (to the northeast) and several ARE research and development holdings along Medical Center Drive (to the north)
Located to the east and southeast of the Property are residential neighborhoods that were developed under the MXN Zone
The Travilah Road corridor contains several small commercial areas developed under the C-1
The Property currently consists of three office buildings (Buildings 1A
one structured parking garage (Parking Garage 1)
and two surface parking facilities on Parcel M
there are two surface parking facilities and a continuation of the Loop Driveway that provides access to both Parcels M and N
Both Parcels M and N contain environmental buffers and are improved with the Loop Driveway and SWM facilities
2018 at 12:11 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}The wealthiest town in Maryland is right here in Montgomery County
The financial news and opinion site 24/7 Wall St
recently reviewed median household incomes in every town
borough or census designated place with a population between 1,000 and 25,000 using data from the U.S
where the median household income is more than $200,000
the median household income is $150,000 more than the state average
at least one town has people who earn significantly more than a typical resident in the state and the typical American
Most of the richest towns have a relatively large number of college-educated people
This is partly because at least a four-year college degree is required to qualify for many high-paying jobs
the share of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree was greater than the statewide share and the nationwide share of 30.3 percent
The town with the highest median income was also often a pretty pricey place to live
“Not only can higher income individuals afford more expensive real estate
but high real estate costs also drive up median incomes as they attract higher income residents and are often often prohibitively expensive for most Americans,” the authors wrote. All but three towns on the list have higher median home values than the typical U.S.
Each “richest” town also had higher median home value than the state. Many of the wealthiest towns are located near large cities and are “well within” commuting distance of a major urban center
“Major urban areas are more likely to offer a wide range of high-paying jobs as well as a high concentration of cultural amenities like museums
and professional sports teams,” the authors wrote
Some small towns where the margin of error was too high weren’t included, the authors wrote. Click here to read the full methodology

2010 at 7:12 pm ETA summer of organizing and protest paid off for the families of Natia Manor last week
when their children's elementary school bus route was reinstated after having been eliminated in June
The families of the 23 students affected learned of their small victory on Sept
The battle started in late June when Todd Watkins, the Montgomery County Public Schools director of transportation
sent a letter to the families of Natia Manor informing them that bus service for Travilah Elementary School students would no longer be provided to their neighborhood
The reason: A recently built path along Travilah Road now provided the neighborhood with walking access for 0.8 mile to the school
Mongtomery County Board of Education Student Transportation Policy states that transportation will be provided for elementary schools beyond one mile
It also states MCPS is responsible for evaluating the safety of walking routes
which at points falls just a few feet from the busy road
was dangerous for children as young as 5 to walk along twice a day
They pointed to a 2004 car hit-and-run on Travilah Road just two miles from Travilah Elementary that killed Wootton High School junior Solomon King
June Todd Watkins responded to parents' concerns in an email
"As I look at the walk route the students in Natia Manor will take to get to and from school at Travilah Elementary
"Younger walkers will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian as they walk
just like they needed to be accompanied while walking to/from and waiting at the school bus stop."
In August, parents appealed Watkins' decision to MCPS chief operating officer Larry Bowers
Parent Jeff Grispoon opened the case by showing a short video he had taken to demonstrate how it felt to walk along the path just feet away from speeding cars
"It didn't take long to find cars speeding down the road," Grispoon said
"You'll see cars coming to a stop as they see the camera."
Watkins presented information at the hearing on national and local bus riding statistics and said 33 percent of students at Montgomery County Schools do not ride the bus
He pointed out that the path did not cross a major road and compared the walking path with similar routes around the country
Natia Manor parents also presented Bowers a letter from the chief of pavement at the Department of Transportation indicating the path would not be maintained
Much of the path is already overgrown with weeds and brush
Bowers sent a letter to the families informing them that he had reversed Watkins' decision
The Natia Manor bus route was reinstated on Sept
many of whom are just starting kindergarten
I understand we have the same bus driver that this route has had for several years
Todd Walkins had said budget concerns were a factor in his decision
But he said they were able to bring the bus route back without any added expense
we did not have to add another bus to transport Natia Manor
We were able to adjust the routes of existing buses to accommodate the additional riders," said Watkins in an email
"The walking policy as a whole saves many millions of dollars
as transporting all students would require hundreds of additional buses."
Lewis said he doubts the path will get used between his neighborhood and the school
since it ends at the corner of Travilah and Dufief Mill
He said that is partly because it is so close to the busy road
and this car came flying around the corner
MCPS did not eliminate any other school bus routes this year
and no additional cuts are expected at this time
"As new pedestrian access is created near schools around the county
each situation is evaluated to see if bus service is still appropriate," Watkins said

about 30 residents from Potomac and surrounding areas quietly listened as Robert Hanson told them about his life on a farm
grew up on a North Potomac farm at Travilah and Quince Orchard roads
where he and his family raised Angus cattle and grew wheat
His talk on Saturday was a part of a series of Potomac-centric events hosted by the Potomac Oak Center
told the audience she hopes these stories of Old Potomac will make current residents more curious about the area they live in and about the historic properties along their morning commute
“It would be good for folks to get out and meet one another,” she told the crowd
Cain grew up in Potomac and now she’s hoping to take her memories
documented history and photography and the stories of others
and publish a book about Potomac’s history
Hanson’s fond memories started in the early 40s
He told the group tales of fox hunting with George S
going to classes at George Washington University
tales of other farm owners and growing up in a time when Potomac was without its many cul-de-sac neighborhoods
But the story that affected him the most was a personal tale about his own father
who had a peculiar relationship with a goose
Their farm had one of the first man-made ponds in the area
and locals from Travilah Baptist Church would baptize their congregation in the water
He said his father would bring whole cobs of corn to the geese by the pond so they could pick at it
one goose would not go since he only had one leg
“My father would go down after the pond froze over and break the ice,” Hanson said
and for 25 years the goose would hop up to his the house and he would feed him the corn
All of Pegleg’s honking would bring thousands of geese to the farm
wanted to make sure no one went hunting on their land
So he placed a sign on the edge of his farm that read
“Please don’t shoot the tamed wild geese.”
the geese showed up two hours after his death
although they hadn’t been to the farm in two years
Leonard Proctor had several historical photos and articles for residents to view as he told of the traditions of fox hunting in Potomac
which were three times a week in the 30s and 40s
He said major changes to Potomac’s landscape began in the 1970s
Proctor lived in Potomac from 1947 to 1975
and said one of his fondest memories was playing baseball in a field located where the Safeway now stands
Proctor said he hopes they will continue to host programs like this in the future
would bring the community together,” Proctor said
