1 Hewitt-Trussville in Saturday’s 7A quarterfinal playoff series
Bob Jones (35-10) is 1-0 in the best-of-3 series
Robert Chatmon II was issued a 1-out walk in the top of the 10th inning and pinch hitter Elijah Degante struck out to set the stage for Rinehart
who drove the ball deep into center field for a 2-out double that scored Chatmon
“It was a dog fight all game,” Rinehart said
“Everyone on the team gave it everything they had
I knew I had to do it for my boys; we fought and worked hard to get here
The Huskies got a leadoff runner in the bottom half of the frame
followed by a single from Tennessee baseball signee Steele Hall
but Koal Duckett and Cameron Simpson popped out to end the final threat
Christian Helmers got the start on the mound for Hewitt-Trussville (33-3) and gave up a single hit through 8 innings -- a leadoff single in the seventh by Alabama baseball signee Zack Johnson
Helmers walked only two batters and produced 9 strikeouts
but was relieved by Blake Bales in the ninth after hitting his pitch count
The senior went the full distance for the shutout win and issued 12 strikeouts against only 7 hits
because I knew it was going to be a pitcher’s duel
That pitcher (Helmers) pitched his a-- off too,” he said
Stat sheet: Bob Jones – Johnson went 1-of-4 with a single
while Rinehart was 1-of-4 with the go-ahead RBI double in the 10th inning
Hewitt-Trussville – Hall was 2-of-4 with a pair of singles
and Simpson was 1-of-3 with a single -- both were intentionally walked
Jonah Jackson and Cooper Huffman each recorded a hit
Coachspeak: “That was unbelievable high school baseball
The defensive plays both teams were making
going 10 innings on pitch count.” -- Bob Jones’ Jared Smith
“When you get two of the best teams in the state
I walked across the field to shake their pitcher’s hand
I haven’t seen a pitching performance like that in 20 years
That’s what this time of season is; you’re going to get the best of the best
and I don’t think either team made an error
We’ve got to regroup and get ready for Monday.” -- Hewitt-Trussville’s Jeff Mauldin
What’s next: Hewitt-Trussville and Bob Jones will play Game 2 at 4:30 p.m
with a decisive third game to follow if necessary

Ahead of a huge Round 2 matchup against defending Class 7A champion Bob Jones
Hewitt-Trussville coach Jeff Mauldin isn’t letting a moment slip by
“It gives the kids something that I remember for the rest of their lives,” the coach said
we were in a quarterfinals series versus Bob Jones vs
it’s our job as coaches to create moments and create memories for the kids that last a lifetime.”
1 Huskies are set to host second-ranked Bob Jones in a decisive playoff series
The winner will advance to the state semifinals against Hoover or Tuscaloosa County
The first pitch is set for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
with Game 2 to follow; a decisive Game 3 would be played on Saturday at 1 p.m.
we didn’t start Game 1 until 6:40 and Game 2 started after 9 p.m.
I’m sure they’re going to bring a ton of people from Madison down here
You’ve got to appreciate it because I know Bob Jones has been on a significant run the last several years
but you also have to take some time and enjoy it.”
Hewitt-Trussville advanced to the second round with a sweep of Sparkman
while Bob Jones claimed the series with a thrilling Game 3 victory over Thompson to advance
The Patriots were down by 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh but used a 3-run homer from Tanner Hermesch and a walk-off solo shot from Myles Hammonds to escape with a victory
With the “unbelievable” series against the Warriors under the team’s belt
Bob Jones coach Jared Smith anticipates another great one for the state in a matchup against an ultra-talented Hewitt-Trussville squad
it’s something our kids will remember for a while just being able to play in this type of environment
and it’s going to be a tough place to play,” Smith said
“There’s going to be a lot of neutral fans that just want to come see some really good baseball
there’s already 15 signed seniors on both teams combined
Fifteen college-level players and that’s not even counting the underclassmen on either team that are college-level guys.”
Among some of the heavy-hitting senior prospects set to take the field for Bob Jones are Hammonds
standout right fielder Dillon Adkins and Shelton State signee Tanner Hermesch
Steele Hall — a projected first-round pick in the MLB Draft — leads a Hewitt-Trussville squad that also includes a duo of UAB pitching signees in righty Christian Helmers and lefty Jacob Francis
Mauldin said the talent on the field can’t go unstated
especially in a season where so many quality teams remain in the Class 7A playoffs
but you can flip that and nothing be different,” Mauldin said
“They’re one of the best teams in our state
I’m not sure about how they break down seniors
but I know they’ve got a lot of college-level kids
This will be the first matchup of the season between the two teams
with the added factor of unfamiliarity playing a factor in preparation ahead of the matchup
we watched a ton of film called a lot of coaches,” Smith said
you can find a lot of people on Twitter and social media
“They’re a really well-coached team that plays really
and then they’ve got a couple of good arms behind him
No doubt that those guys have been throwing strikes and they play elite defense
they’ll score four or five runs and then they shut the team out more times than they don’t.”
with Mauldin saying that accommodations will be made to the ballpark as the fans for the second-round series look to add up
both coaches are confident that the series will provide some great baseball and an incredible display of talent
“It’s really neat this series is getting a lot of notice,” he said
“We get a lot of media requests for the weekend
but I think it’s been a great crowd and a great atmosphere
and I think baseball has been pretty big here for a while
more people outside of moms and dads and grandparents are having an interest
and our community does a great job of supporting our teams that advance
our girls basketball; when they go to the final four
we’re taking four or five busses downtown to the civic center
— The city of Trussville is set to enhance Highway 11 at Carrington Drive with an additional turn lane and traffic light
The project is part of Governor Kay Ivey's Rebuild Alabama initiative
This development comes as the city experiences significant growth
"The growth of Trussville has moved east there because of the land that was available back then," said Trussville Mayor Buddy Choat
there’s a lot of traffic that comes out of St
This improvement will not only put a traffic signal but it will widen and make some ingress and egress opportunities there."
The Carrington development has seen about 1000 new homes added since around 2010
The Alabama Department of Transportation reported that sections of Highway 11 in Trussville see approximately 10,000 drivers each day
found that much of this traffic occurs in the morning
with an average of 400 vehicles coming from the Carrington Drive intersection alone
A nearby elementary school is considered a major factor contributing to the heavy traffic
The plan is to build another elementary school close to this same roadway
Choat says this improvement project should support those plans
we also tied it into a new elementary school that we had planned for the Glendale Farm areas
It will be the first step of two I hope will be another intersection when we get our school built further out of US 11."
The proposed new elementary school was dependent on a property tax vote that failed last year
Mayor Choat said the city is working to build its general funds to make the school a reality
The city plans to contribute close to $300,000 for the improvements on US 11

Since Hall’s Motor Sports in Trussville relocated
its former home on South Chalkville Road has remained empty
Alabama-based general contractor Seay Construction proposed a plan for the space
which Trussville City Council will vote on Tuesday night
6345 South Chalkville Road housed Hall’s Motor Sports until June 2024
when the company relocated to Roosevelt Boulevard
The now-vacant 35,500-square-foot building is begging for a new tenant
and Seay Construction wants to bring retail
According to the Trussville Tribune
Seay Construction believes the development could produce $13 million in taxable income per year
the city would give up two-thirds of the sales tax revenue generated by businesses in the development for the next 10 years
The city also agrees to waive all permit fees
and the plan shows an extra entertainment area and outdoor dining spot projected to open in 2026

Trussville, AL (WBMA) — The City of Trussville has announced scheduled construction on North Chalkville Road, set to take place between Poplar Street and Interstate 59. The roadwork is slated to begin on Monday, April 28, 2025, and continue through Friday, May 16, 2025.
The construction will involve milling, paving, and striping, which may affect traffic flow and accessibility during this period.
"We are coordinating efforts to minimize disruptions and ensure emergency access is maintained," said city officials.
The city asks that people plan their travel accordingly as delays may occur.
Falling tree limbs in Birmingham kills one person, another injured
TRUSSVILLE, Ala. (WBMA) — A Trussville man who got scammed out of his $25,000 jeep learned his insurance won't cover the loss. It's a cautionary tale for anyone who sells large ticket items online.
Wesley Sharp advertised his Jeep Wrangler on Facebook Marketplace last year with a sales price of $25,000. A buyer from Tennessee was interested. Sharp met him in Trussville after work for a test drive.
"We met in a public area with cameras around," explained Sharp. The buyer bought the vehicle on the spot with a cashier's check. Sharp deposited it the next day. But three days later he got a call from the bank, that cashier's check appearing to come from a real bank in Nashville was no good.
Sharp filed a police report as did others identifying the suspect from a line up. A warrant is out for Ketwain Meridith, but he has not been arrested.
"I was one of at least half a dozen or even more in this grand theft ring. The vehicle he arrived in had been stolen an hour and a half before," explained Sharp.
Sharp then filed a claim with his insurance company: Allstate. "Right before Christmas I got a call from them. My heart sunk in; they're not going to do anything," remarked Sharp.
In its denial letter Allstate said Sharp was in a sales agreement and sold the Jeep Wrangler and the policy excludes " loss due to conversion or embezzlement by any person who has the vehicle due to any rental, lease, lien or sales agreement."
Sharp has had to continue to make payments on the Jeep or his credit will take a hit. "I have three payments left and will have the title in hand in March. I still own the vehicle even though I don't have it," said Sharp.
As a customer for years, Sharp says he is very angry. It's a tough lesson for everyone to learn from.
Some advice Trussville Police gave Sharp: let them help you running by running ID's and tag numbers to make sure a buyer is legitimate. Meet at the bank to verify cash or a cashier's check is valid.
Sharp has since filed a civil suit against Allstate. "Not to have anything is a major disappointment," explained Sharp.
We reached out to Allstate media reps who said the claim was denied based on the policy.
One positive note in all this, someone who heard about Sharp's plight offered a vehicle as a gift for his family.

WATCHAfter 23 years
free garbage service may end in Trussville due to budget concernsby Gracie Johnson
— Residents of Trussville may soon have to pay for their garbage service
a cost the city has covered for the past 23 years
The city council recently approved a resolution allowing mayor Buddy Choat to negotiate a garbage service contract
potentially leading to a $30 monthly fee for residents
Mayor Choat explained the financial strain on the city
noting that covering garbage service fees is costing Trussville $2.5 million annually
"Our school tax did not pass last year so we are trying to build our general fund up in case we do have to go to the market and borrow money we will have enough in our reserves and general fund to cover that," said Choat
The mayor also highlighted efforts to bolster the city's finances
including doubling the lodging tax and making personnel cuts
"We've had five months of reporting
we've had two record months out of those five but yet we are still over $200,000 behind."
Residents expressed mixed feelings about the potential fee
"We have paid garbage everywhere we have lived all over the country and when we came back
and it was free I was pretty happy."
"It probably wouldn't affect my husband and I because our kids are all grown up and we have a pretty steady income
but I know it would affect a lot of people
especially people with small children."
The final decision on the garbage service fee is pending further by the council

AL (WBMA) — A Birmingham landfill again causing issues for neighbors in Trussville
Homeowners say the smell is getting worse even in the cold winter months
Trussville neighbors in Magnolia Place live next door to Birmingham's Eastern Area landfill
There are hundreds of homes and a school nearby
For years the landfill has been plagued by complaints with homeowners saying things improved for awhile
things have gotten significantly worse with vultures all over the neighborhood," explained Julie Cadena
She shared video of dozens of vultures circling above their homes
Cadena said when they first moved in the landfill's odors were only noticeable on some hot
MORE ITEAM REPORTS: Smelly, cloudy drinking water has East Alabama customers concerned
MORE ITEAM REPORTS: Trussville driver loses Jeep in Facebook Marketplace scam
While some would argue don't live near a dump if you don't want to risk smells
neighbors say that should not be an excuse
"If people were following the rules and regulations it wouldn't be an issue," remarked Cadena
The Trussville mayor's office told neighbors there was nothing it could do
Mark Prince says the smells and contaminants are inching closer
"When it's dry we get these dust clouds that settle over the neighborhood; it can't be good for everyone," remarked Prince
Prince says the developer told him the landfill would be shutting down when he bought his home decades ago
"In the past few years since it re-opened
it's gotten out of hand," stated Prince
Birmingham city leaders told us the facility is in compliance with regulations
Neighbors have filed complaints with state regulators at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management
The community hopes it is a sign things are moving forward
"We just want to be neighbors and work it out
We don't expect them to be shut down," shared Prince
We're told once the new cell opens at the landfill
household garbage will be dumped further away from the homes
Grass will be planted on the hill facing the neighborhood providing some relief
