The Tucumcari at Raton baseball game was the final home game of the season for Raton and was moved to Monday afternoon because of a lack of umpires and the Raton Tigers apparently liked the move as the Tigers scored a 20 to 10 five inning victory over the Rattlers
the Tigers ran their season record to 8 -10 and improved their district mark to 5-2
The game was the last home game of the season and senior’s Chase Middlebrook
Cameron Edmondson and Clayton Kelly had their last game at Gabrieli Field end in a winning effort
Middlebrook leads off in the lineup for Coach Robby Armijo and he went 3 for 4 with three doubles and 4 RBIs and scored 3 times
He batted twice for the home team in the first inning with Raton batting around and notching six runs in the home half
Tucumcari tied it up with four of their own in the third inning
but Raton bats answered back with five in their third and batted thru the order again in the decisive fifth getting another seven spot and the win
Raton pitcher Azden Romero was relieved by Santiago Castillo and the two combined for 8 strikeouts
Raton finishes the season with three games on the road including at Estancia on Friday the 25th

said he has concerns about his ability to finish a large infrastructure project on his property due to a funding freeze at the U.S
Lopez was among those who spoke at a news conference Thursday in Santa Fe
Some farming grants from an federal agriculture program were paused amid sweeping funding freezes
Email notifications are only sent once a day
Farming on the windswept terrain north of Tucumcari
Robert Lopez is about two-thirds of the way through completing an infrastructure project that includes a mile of underground pipe to move his crop-growing operation forward
But although Lopez has been reimbursed by the federal government for two-thirds of the roughly $225,000 project
Lopez now feels reluctant to start on the last third of the work due to concerns about funding freezes that have occurred since President Donald Trump took office
“I’m kind of an example of what is going on right now in Washington,” Lopez said
The Quay County farmer was among several people who spoke at a news conference held by Democratic U.S
Teresa Leger Fernández on Thursday in Santa Fe to discuss concerns about the Trump administration’s freeze of some U.S
including grants within the Environmental Quality Incentives Program
The program aims to help farmers maintain or improve production while conserving natural resources
The White House ordered the freeze late last month across some 2,600 programs before it was temporarily blocked by a federal judge shortly before it was set to go into effect
The Trump administration later rescinded the memo after pushback and widespread confusion
The Washington Post reported earlier this month that farmers have reported missing millions of dollars they were promised by the USDA
despite the Trump administration’s vow the federal funding freeze would not apply to projects that benefit individual people
a spokesperson for the Republican Party of New Mexico
said the funding freeze will ultimately benefit rural parts of the state as the Trump administration seeks to reshape some federal programs
“This funding pause is to ensure programs like EQIP stop failing New Mexico’s small farmers and acequias
as [former President Joe] Biden’s $133.4 million allocation saw 62% of applicants rejected only to have what was received eaten up by red tape and inflation due to the policies supported by Leger Fernández,” Soular wrote in an emailed statement
“President Trump’s proven record of slashing regulations
and securing trade wins proves his unwavering commitment to our rural communities and farmers,” the statement continued
But farmers nationwide have reported feeling as if the USDA program pause has left them in limbo
Lopez — who ran for a county commission seat in Quay County as a Democrat last year but lost to a Republican — said he lacks the $80,000 he needs to complete the project
He said he has to think about whether to take operating money that he would ordinarily use to purchase seed
fertilizer and water and funnel it into the project
He said this would be a gamble because he fears the USDA will now be unable to reimburse that $80,000 through the EQIP program
“These federal programs are security that we have to improve our farms,” Lopez said
“I’m very concerned that the administration that we have right now is not taking into consideration the long-reaching aspects of their cuts.”
Part of the project that Lopez still needs to complete relates to the seeding of about 150 acres on his farm so as to put the area back to grass to curb wind and water erosion
He also aims to put a liner in a large earth tank
he removed old concrete ditches while installing underground PVC pipe for irrigation purposes
About a mile of pipeline has been installed
executive director of the New Mexico Acequia Association
said the organization is concerned about farmers and ranchers in the state whose reimbursement funds for conservation projects could be at risk
“A lot of them have paid out of their own pocket to do these conservation practices
and a lot of them are being left on the hook,” Garcia said in an interview
“This is really causing a lot of stress for those farmers
It is unclear how many farmers or ranchers in New Mexico are impacted
Members of New Mexico’s all-Democratic congressional delegation have been animated since Trump took office on Jan
blasting the president’s executive orders and holding news conferences
Leger Fernández was particularly outspoken earlier this week while addressing the New Mexico Legislature
Republicans in the House and Senate are doing is destroying every single aspect of our agricultural stream,” she said during Thursday’s news conference
At the event held in the capital city’s Railyard district
there were signs staged near baskets of produce reading “Trump Betrayed Rural America” and “Farmers Who Grow These Foods Were Abandoned By Trump.”
