Columbia is moving forward to modernize one of its most visited parks COLUMBIA — The Twin Lakes Recreation Area is one step closer to a major facelift and frequent parkgoers say the changes are long-awaited Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Commission approved a $350,000 improvement plan funded by the 2021 Park Sales Tax The project now heads to City Council for final approval construction would begin later this spring and continue through winter 2026 The plan includes a full renovation of the park’s large shelter the installation of a new Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant playground and major improvements to the off-leash dog park “We've been coming to the Twin Lakes dog park for about six months,” Columbia resident Mary Kate Hafner said “Part of the reason I fell in love with Columbia and knew that it would be a great place to live and build my life is because of the amazing park system that we have here I'm really happy to see my tax dollars put to work to improve our parks and trails around Columbia."  One of the most significant changes is the 5-acre expansion of the year-round “all dog” area The updated space will include additional shade Have the latest local news delivered every morning to start your day informed That expansion will take over the site of Little Mates Cove a water-play area that’s been closed since 2019 Parks officials said the aging structure faces structural issues and lifeguard staffing shortages that make it too costly to repair It will be demolished as part of the renovation “There’s so many dogs that come — even though this is big it’s good to have more space because you get sometimes too many dogs at one time in one area,” said Sandy Rother who visits the park daily with her dog Hank and it’s fun to have more space and grass and shade We have people come from all different states and they always say our dog park is the best one they've ever been to.”  While the aquatic facility will be removed Parks and Recreation plans to preserve space for a future splash pad and new restroom facility — a project that could appear on the 2031 parks tax renewal ballot The Columbia City Council is expected to vote on the project in the coming weeks construction is expected to wrap up by the end of 2026 To report an error or typo, email news@komu.com Email notifications are only sent once a day Your browser
