Texas – The Cowboys' first two 2025 NFL Draft picks
have a common thread connecting them: Former NFL head coach and current Boston College head coach Bill O'Brien
When O'Brien accepted the head coaching job at BC in February of 2024
he met one player before meeting with the rest of the team: Donovan Ezeiruaku
you could tell that he was a very focused guy," O'Brien said of Ezeiruaku
smart and he really helped us in our first year because he bought right in and he was one of the main leaders of the team
and just a great guy to coach and we're going to miss him."
Any collegiate head coach would miss a player that tallied 80 tackles
20.5 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks in their first season on the job
But Ezeiruaku's impact on the defense stretched beyond the stat sheet last year
won us two or three games by strip sacking the quarterback
getting the ball back to the offense," O'Brien said
He plays a hundred miles an hour on every play."
The pass rushing ability is all there with Ezeiruaku
but he takes pride in his versatility being able to defend the run as well
but O'Brien feels like the floor is already high in that department
"He did a really good job for us against the run," O'Brien said
on plays that were to him or on plays that were away from him
"It's obviously a higher level of competition and he's going to have to improve in his technique and the way that he approaches the running game and things like that
but I think that he'll do that and he'll be a really good player for them."
Ezeiruaku's not the tallest or heaviest pass rusher at all
and bend that O'Brien expects to continue to work in his favor at the next level
and then he has quickness off the ball and the ability to explode past the tackle by dipping the shoulder
"He's got really good arm length even though he is not the tallest guy
he is got really good arm length so he can use a rip move
"And then he has a real knack for accelerating to the quarterback and going after the ball
So I think that his ability to rush the passer
and I think it'll translate well to that league."
Leadership ability has been a large emphasis for new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer
and it was evident in a draft class that included a plethora of team captains and players with high marks for character
"He was a leader in every phase of it," O'Brien said
"He was in the front row of the team meetings
"He was a voice that everybody listened to on the team
everybody voted for him and I thought he did a really good job leading."
Turning back the clock a few years in O'Brien's career
his second and final year as the offensive coordinator at Alabama was the first year that Tyler Booker played for the Crimson Tide
He wasted no time establishing himself in a locker room full of future NFL talent right from the jump
"From the time we recruited him at Alabama to when he came to Alabama
I was only around him for his freshman year
thought he did a good job of anchoring the pocket
Bryce Young was our quarterback and did a good job of protecting him… I think the world of Book[er]
One of the few concerns about Booker coming out was his athleticism
Could he move well enough to establish running lanes and protect the passer
"I think he'll work hard to improve his ability
I never had an issue at all with his athleticism…" O'Brien said
I never had an issue with his athletic ability
O'Brien has spent plenty of time in the NFL as an offensive assistant and coordinator with the Patriots in two stints
and most notably as the head coach of the Texans from 2014-2020
and he knows what it takes for players to make the jump from college to the NFL
his advice lied in stacking together small improvements each and every day
You're going to have some days where they're not great
you're in a professional defensive scheme now
"Just take it one day at a time and try to get better
The best pros were the ones that I was around that tried to just improve every day
The word "culture" in the NFL can sometimes be shrugged off as not as important as it's made out to be
who likes Schottenheimer's emphasis on the team culture and thinks that the two players he spent time coaching in college will set the standard for the Cowboys for years to come
"I really don't know if there's anything more important," O'Brien said of culture
"I think that with the money that's involved these days
I think it's important to have high character guys that care about the game
that always think about what's doing best for the team…"
"That's the type of guys you want in the locker room
You may not get a hundred percent that way
And I think there's no doubt that those two guys are great culture guys."

and prides himself on being a versatile "dawg" that can cause havoc in the backfield
The Cowboys hosted all 18 of their rookies at the Star in Frisco on Thursday to start the preparations for the team's rookie minicamp
Not content to use only one 2025 NFL Draft pick on a running back
the Cowboys launched one at Jaydon Blue and the other at Phil Mafah; and both appear ready for impact
the Cowboys had a successful result but there are still lingering questions
Tyler Booker makes the rest of the offensive line look very interesting
Perhaps the biggest surprise of all the Cowboys’ 2025 draft picks was the first one
presumably replacing Zack Martin at right guard
another possibility is out there which could lead to greater change across the offensive line
Booker played left guard for the Crimson Tide last season. Transitioning OL positions upon entering the NFL is hardly uncommon; Martin himself was a left tackle at Notre Dame but immediately went to RG in Dallas
Tyler Smith was also a LT at Tulsa but immediately moved to guard as a pro
Cooper Beebe played guard and tackle at Kansas St
and asking Booker to stay at guard and just move from left to right is probably the least challenging transition there is
Dallas’ picking Booker was a big surprise because the interior OL was low on the needs list compared to others
Smith and Beebe are locked in as starters and Brock Hoffman was competent last year when Martin got hurt
Dallas had already brought in veteran Robert Jones and Saahdiq Charles this offseason to compete with him
it just didn’t seem like the spot Dallas would address on Thursday night
If the Cowboys were going to pick an offensive lineman early
Tyler Guyton and Terence Steele were the weakest points on last year’s line
Steele is also a ripening cap casualty with $8.75 million saved next year as an outright release
A new OT could have provided immediate competition
and at least someone to groom for next year if Steele’s gone or if Guyton doesn’t progress
what if the Booker pick has more to do with Guyton and Steele than we think
You can draw a straight line from Booker to the likes of Hoffman
and Charles as the clear losers from his arrival
They’ve probably gone from competing for a starting job to backup spots at best
did Dallas add a new guard because they’re considering moving Tyler Smith to left tackle
be playing that same spot in Dallas so that Smith can provide an upgrade protecting Dak Prescott’s blind side
he proved that he could handle LT duties in his rookie season
After preparing all offseason to play guard in 2022
Tyler returned to LT when Tyron Smith got injured and played there most of the season
which was to be expected given the circumstances
but still good enough for the Cowboys to go 12-5 and win a playoff game
It stands to reason that Smith would be even better now at left tackle
especially if he gets a full offseason to prepare for it
And unless Guyton takes a massive developmental leap in his second season
Smith is probably Dallas’ best option for arguably the most critical position on the entire offensive line
That doesn’t mean Guyton wouldn’t start in 2025
Maybe he ends up there long-term given Steele’s contract situation
Guyton could be a strong swing option this season as he works on his craft and towards starting again in his third year
This scenario opens the door back up for Hoffman
and that pack of interior options to compete for a starting job
It also allows for flexibility; Booker could still end up on the right side if one of those guys is particularly better at left guard
The offseason is the time for moving guys around and positional shifts
especially with a new offensive coaching staff shaking things up anyway
Odds are that Tyler Booker is here for the obvious
replacing Zack Martin as the Cowboys’ new right guard
But given the weakness at offensive tackle last year and the goal of deploying the best line possible in 2025
the possibility that his arrival facilitates Tyler Smith sliding left shouldn’t be ignored
It may be how Dallas gets their five best linemen on the field this season
playSee why NFL scouts call Penn State's Tyler Warren a 'Swiss Army Knife' (1:41)Check out highlights from Penn State TE Tyler Warren ahead of the 2025 NFL draft
INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts scout Chad Henry is among the franchise's most experienced evaluators, so he was able to tap into his institutional knowledge when looking to contextualize the scouting process of first-round pick Tyler Warren
Henry flashed back to fall 2006 when he was scouting then-Georgia Tech receiver and future Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson in a game against Virginia Tech
"I scouted him in three plays," Henry said
"He caught a standup screen and outran the Virginia Tech defense for 80 yards
He had a one-handed catch in the end zone on a fade where he made the corner look like a child
is how it felt while watching Warren lead Penn State past USC last October
It wasn't just Warren's stunning 17 catches or 224 receiving yards
with Warren contributing to the offense in almost every way
When he wasn't catching a ball over two defenders
he was lining up under center and powering for a first down on a third-and-1
And when Warren wasn't running over defenders in the open field
he was throwing a pass to a receiver for a 9-yard completion
outside screens and dominated in every manner
It's kind of the same thing [as Johnson]."
Warren's performance against USC and his other similar outings have the Colts thinking about the ways they can also utilize the 14th overall pick
Expect Warren to have a role as a conventional tight end
But don't be surprised if his impact extends well beyond that
"He's a guy that can do it all," Colts coach and playcaller Shane Steichen said
the Colts are seemingly thrilled with their pick
Indianapolis was last in the NFL in tight end receptions last season (39) and 31st in tight end receiving yardage (467)
Given their lack of moves at the position in free agency
landing Warren or Loveland was critical to upgrading the unit
"It'll be fun to have him," Steichen said about the myriad ways Warren can be used
This plan was further cemented when the Colts met Warren and quizzed him on scheme-related issues
Warren showed command of all facets of the offense
It's that command that allows him to have such a varied impact
"To use him the way that [Penn State] used him in the spots that they line him up
you could see the former quarterback in him
And when he came into our room at the combine
Though Warren can impact the game in many ways
no one will mistake him for a gadget player
His toughness is one of his main qualities
and it's one that drew the Colts to him as much as anything else
Warren is a powerful runner after the catch who often requires multiple tacklers to take him down
"Watch the guy run on the goal line," Henry said
That toughness influences Warren's blocking
The Colts expect him to be heavily involved as a run blocker this season
That will allow him to remain on the field in passing and running situations
which makes him more dangerous because his presence does not serve as an indicator to defenses
Though he'll need to fine-tune his blocking
"I think it's really your mentality to want to do it," Warren said of his blocking
It's just one of the many things the Colts will ask of Warren
If he can duplicate even some of what he demonstrated against USC
— We could throw out a bunch of statistics that would indicate Tigers ultra-reliable lefty reliever Tyler Holton has been grinding a bit through the first month of the season
when they were rendered utterly irrelevant
we would sheepishly wish we'd have kept those stats to ourselves
I don’t think I was doing this good at this time last year.”
He still managed to finish with a 2.19 ERA
among big-league pitchers with at least 90 innings
on-base percentage (.222) and OPS (.500) in baseball
Holton went into the game Sunday with a 2.76 ERA
just given how dominant he’s been,” manager AJ Hinch said
“When he gives up a run or a couple of hits
But Holton is a fierce competitor and perfectionist
his reaction to his not-perfect start is also a little exaggerated
any time I give up a walk or give up a hit or give up a run
I think I’m the worst pitcher on earth,” Holton said
“So you aren’t going to come at me harder than I come at myself
“That’s why I went back and looked at what I was doing last year
I was pretty good last year and I sucked in April.”
It was his outing against the Orioles on April 26 that had Holton digging into his archives
He entered in the seventh inning and walked lefty Cedric Mullins and gave up a single to lefty Gunnar Henderson
righty-swinging Ramon Urias hit a homer off him
“I gave up the homer and then I found my sweeper and struck out (lefty Jackson) Holliday and I was like
The early sample-size numbers show Holton’s command hasn’t been as precise
He’s pitched behind more than usual and hitters are slashing .333/.462/.762 when he’s behind in the count
That results in higher number of balls pulled in the air (19.6%
up 5% over last year) and more hard-hit balls (45%
“I think my execution can definitely get better,” Holton said
My body feels great and I like the way the ball is coming out.”
The Tigers on this trip have faced two teams with heavy right-handed lineups
Holton has pitched only 3⅔ innings but faced all right-handers
“He’s had to navigate an entire right-handed lineup
which is not always going to be the case,” Hinch said
“Earlier in April he wasn’t locating pitches and he was falling behind
He wasn’t pitching efficiently and all of that contributed to a little bit of a slower start
he only pitches in the most important innings and he’s usually getting the best hitters
Holton pitched a clean inning with a strikeout Friday
He feels like he’s trending in a positive direction
“We have five more months and hopefully some more after that
It’s why you have this mindset and why you play this game — to improve and execute with every opportunity you get
Just trying to make sure everything is crisp each time out.”
Angels shortstop Zach Neto has been a thorn in the Tigers’ side in this series
Not only with the first-pitch homer off Tarik Skubal on Friday
He had uncontested steals against both Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty
both times getting massive jumps before they even started their delivery
So I think he’s assuming on long holds that we’re going to pitch and not pick (throw over)
I think that’s what both of those have in common
is the new pace of play rule that limits throw-overs to two
with the third one resulting in a balk if the runner isn’t picked off
“Neto is a very advanced baserunner,” Hinch said
“He’s very aggressive and he’s like a lot of runners nowadays that feels less of a threat of multiple pickoffs and he’ll take advantage of it
he’s very much selling out for the lack of a third pickoff move
but a lot of it is the modern era where baserunners can take a pretty good leap of faith that they can go uncontested.”
That perfectly reasonable logic was no solace to Mize
“I feel like I want to be one of the smartest players on the field and I got outsmarted there and it pisses you off.”
Utility man Matt Vierling (shoulder) began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo
He walked twice and struck out in his first three at-bats Sunday
“He’s going to DH for the first few games as we get him in game mode,” Hinch said
“We want to get some at-bats under his belt before we introduce the outfield
It’s important to change his mindset from rehabbing to playing.”
Hinch said he texted Vierling Sunday morning
“He was like a little kid going to his first little-league game,” Hinch said
“He was happy to be back in uniform and back playing.”
… Sunday marked the 23rd game the Tigers played in 24 days and they entered the series finale against the Angels with a 14-8 record in that stretch
… The Tigers have played 19 of 34 games against teams with a .500 record or better and they are the only team in the American League with a winning record (10-9) against those teams
Losers both because they have lost in the political realm
while simultaneously handing over key institutions to the illiberal left
That is a common charge you hear from right-wing intellectuals these days
as exemplified by commentators such as Patrick Deneen
Are classical liberals a bunch of pathetic losers
where I review my favorite waiver wire adds and drops for each week of the MLB season
I’ll try to give you some recommended adds each week based on recent production or role changes
I’ll list the category where I think he’ll be helpful or the quick reason he’s listed
I hope that it will help you determine if the player is a fit for what your team needs or not
For a player to qualify to be on this list
he needs to be UNDER 40% rostered in Yahoo
“These players aren’t available in my league,” and I can’t help you there
These players are available in over 60% of leagues and some in 98% of leagues
so they’re available in many places and that can hopefully satisfy readers in all league types
Tyler Stephenson made his season debut on Friday night after missing the first month of the year with an oblique injury
We know that Stephenson is a strong hitter for a catcher
and he was routinely drafted among the top 8-10 players at the position in all league types
He’s a .260-ish hitter with .20+ home run power in a great home ballpark and good lineup
The Reds have said they will play him at 1B/DH as well
so he should be in the lineup for around 80% of the Reds’ games
That’s enough for me to roster Stephenson in one-catcher formats if I don’t have a stud at the position
who is hitting .327 with seven RBI in his first 15 games
The comes with no home runs and no steals in a bad lineup
which is the primary concern with rostering Quero
who was the 62nd-ranked prospect in baseball and the 6th-ranked prospect in the White Sox organization
who is playing most every day in Detroit with Jake Rogers hurt
Dingler is hitting .269 in 20 games over the last month
but has three home runs and 10 RBI over that span as well
He was a top prospect in the Detroit system
so he’s worth a shot if you’re hurting with your second catcher
I bought in on Rhys Hoskins in spring training because he talked about being fully healthy after ACL surgery in 2023 and had also changed his stance to quiet his head and improve his contact
The results didn’t come right at the start of the season
but we’re starting to see them now with Hoskins going 22-for-76 (.289) over his last 25 games with three home runs and 11 RBI
We know he’s not going to be a major batting average asset
so I have no problem adding Hoskins anywhere he’s available right now
A deep league option for power is Rowdy Tellez - 1B
who is 7-for-25 (.280) over his last 10 games with two home runs and eight RBI
but the Seattle lineup has been heating up lately
and Tellez is still making a lot of quality contact
Manzardo has been here for the last two weeks because I’ve been highlighting that his quality of contact is really strong
and the surface-level results are going to start to catch up to that
he’s gone 10-for-40 with four home runs and eight RBI
That’s solid production from a corner infield spot
I think he’s a .260+ hitter with 25+ home run power in a solid lineup
He’s hitting .271 with three home runs on the season and has gone 12-for-29 (.414) with six RBI over the last week
so the average and RBI should be solid but not spectacular
Frelick is playing every day in Milwaukee and hitting .307 in his 33 games with seven steals and 16 runs scored
He hasn’t been running as much over the last week or so
but I don’t believe that’s a long-term concern for his stolen base output
He hits fifth or sixth in the Brewers’ lineup
which should lead to decent counting stats as the season goes on
but he’s unlikely to hit more than five home runs this season
This play is essentially about batting average and speed
You can add Victor Scott II for the same reasons you’d add Frelick. This week, I posted an article about hitters who could be worth adding/trading for based on their contact rates and swing rates. Scott popped for me in that article
but I like a lot of what he’s doing in terms of his swing decisions
and he’s hitting .273 on the season with 11 steals while playing every day
I need him to focus more on line drives and hard groundballs
and I think we could see a strong stretch of production in the coming weeks
The Red Sox will need to clear up some space in the outfield for Anthony
but he’s off to a strong start in Triple-A
especially if Ceddanne Rafaela continues to struggle to make consistent contact
Rafaela could move into a super utility role with Jarren Duran in CF and Anthony in LF
If the Red Sox consider moving Rafael Devers to 1B with Triston Casas out then that would free up the DH spot to be used for an extra outfielder
which means Anthony could come up and they could rotate the outfielders around
but it feels like the time could be coming
The same could be said for Jordan Lawlar - SS
The Diamondbacks have started to play him at 3B recently
and create a LF platoon with Pavin Smith and Lourdes Gurriel Jr
That might be the smartest decision for the team
Beck had no home runs this week after hitting five last week
He didn’t produce in 55 MLB games last year and then failed to produce early this season
Beck has the potential to be a solid fantasy contributor
and he plays his home games at Coors Field
which is going to be a major boost for him
but he also has a 17% swinging strike rate and 34% strikeout rate with poor contact rates
His aggressive approach will lead to lots of hard-hit pulled baseballs
You can expect similar inconsistency from Trent Grisham - OF
who has been playing more regularly for the Yankees after hitting .235 over his last eight games with four home runs and five RBI
so Grisham may continue to produce decent power numbers when he plays
When I started writing this article on Saturday morning
Kyle Stowers was 12% rostered in Yahoo formats
Stowers went 7-for-15 with four home runs and 10 RBI
That’s unfortunate because we’ve had Stowers on here for a couple of weeks as a low-cost add
and now the price is going to skyrocket above what you probably want to pay
Stowers has power with a 20% barrel rate and 91.3 mph average exit velocity; yet
he also has an 18% swinging strike rate and just a 67% contact rate overall
He is swinging out of the zone less this season
and Stowers is aggressive enough in the zone that he can make up for some of that swing and miss
but he’s also sporting a career low 31% fly ball rate
which should help keep the batting average high
and the low fly ball rate could be solid in a pitcher-friendly park
but this feels more like a .250 type of hitter who will be limited to 15-20 HRs due to park and approach
A cheaper but less explosive deep-league outfield option is Eli White - OF
who continues to get consistent playing time as Ronald Acuna Jr
White has cut his fly ball rate by over 10% and gotten more aggressive with his swing rates
Focusing on groundballs and line drives seems to have helped because the swinging strike rate is down significantly from his early-career numbers
and the overall contact rates have pushed up near 80%
Pairing that with a 10% barrel rate is kind of nice
It’s not going to lead to plenty of fantasy juice
but White could continue to post a solid batting average while hitting in a good Atlanta lineup
and that could be worth something if you need an outfielder
Connor Norby has been off the IL for almost two weeks now
He’s gone just 11-for-50 (.220) in 14 games with one home run
but he’s playing every day for the Marlins
and we know there is some power and speed in there
and his swinging strike rate was high last season as well
so he’s highly unlikely to be a batting average asset
but if you want a 20/10 type of player who will play every day
Another Marlins hitter of note is Eric Wagaman - 1B/3B/OF
who came up for me on a random search of players who are making solid swing decisions
He’s always made a fair amount of contact and doesn’t lift the ball a lot
but his strong understanding of the strike zone means he gets his pitch often and has the chance to run a decent batting average with 15 HR power
He’ll just need to hit to keep getting at-bats
With Jonah Bride now gone and Griffin Conine injured
Wagaman has a chance to carve out some playing time at 1B/3B/DH
ATH: 12% rostered(IMPENDING RETURN FROM IL
Zack Gelof is at Triple-A for his rehab assignment after offseason surgery on his wrist
He’s only had 12 plate appearances coming into today
and the A’s have said they wanted him to get 35 before being activated
so he’s unlikely to return from the IL this upcoming week
Adding him now would likely save you some FAAB
so if he can go back to being even a .230-.240 hitter
you’re looking at a guy who could easily go 15/15 in the remaining games this season
That’s without even factoring in what playing in a minor league ballpark in the middle of the hot summer months in Sacramento could do for Gelof’s power
the Dodgers finally called up Hyeseong Kim
Chris Taylor started Saturday’s game at second base
and Miguel Rojas also started two games at second base this week before Kim was called up
so just keep that in mind when you set your bids tonight
but he was hitting just .252 in 131 plate appearances at Triple-A with a 12% swinging strike rate
His overall contact rate of 75% at Triple-A is fine
but suggests there will be some swing and miss at the big league level
and even though he had a few huge home runs that we saw on Twitter
his average exit velocity at Triple-A was 87.3 mph
and I think that’s going to be the majority of Kim’s value at the big league level this season
but I’d rather stash Gelof if you’re choosing between the two
The veteran has now homered in three straight games and has gone 24-80 (.300) over the last month with three home runs
so much of this could just be that he’s healthy again; however
we should also acknowledge that he has the lowest chase rate and swinging strike rate of his career
his 12.8% swinging strike rate is WAY below his career 18% mark
He’s swinging at the lowest rate he ever has and posted his highest zone contact rate and overall contact rate
He has not all of a sudden become an elite contact hitter
but he has made clear improvements to his approach
he’s pulling the ball more than he ever has and hitting it on the ground a decent amount
Given that he’s playing nearly every day in center field and playing really good defense out there
I’m inclined to believe that a lot of this value is real
Just keep an eye on his plate discipline stats because if he starts getting overly aggressive again
Another multi-position infielder is Brooks Lee - 2B/SS/3B - MIN (4% rostered)
going 13-for-44 (.295) in his last 13 games
The downside is that he only has one home run and three RBI with no steals over that stretch
so I think he’s a better real-life player than a fantasy player
but he could produce a solid batting average in regular at-bats
and that’s worth something in deeper formats
Just keep in mind that Royce Lewis is likely back on Monday
and we don’t know what that will do to Lee’s playing time
but he’s a solid option as a player who could help your batting average
He’s hitting .287 on the season but has gone 16-for-40 (.400) with three home runs and 13 RBI over his last 10 games
He’s being a little more aggressive this season
which is fine for Crawford because he has an 84% contact rate for his career
He’s expanding the zone a bit more this season
but is still making elite levels of contact
and the batting average bump of late feels partially real
CWS (4% rostered) returned from the IL this week and has gone 4-for-12 with four runs scored and an RBI in three games
He’s going to hit leadoff and play shortstop for the White Sox every day
and the counting stats will be impacted by the poor lineup around him
which is why he’s mainly a deep league option
Varsho came off the IL this week and had two good games against the Red Sox
but is 3-for-14 overall with two home runs
He also has seven strikeouts in five games
and while he has 20/20 upside in a full season
you’re likely getting that with a worse batting average than somebody like Gelof would give you
It’s a solid profile for a player who’s on the wire in a lot of formats right now
but you’re not adding a “league winner” or somebody who is going to drastically impact your standings
With Ramon Urias battling a hamstring injury
Mayo is hitting .255/.353/.539 with six homers in 27 games at Triple-A this season
There remains plenty of upside in Mayo’s bat
Urias and Jordan Westburg don’t figure to be out more than a couple of weeks
His overall contact rates remain below average
but he’s been crushing lefties (.529/.579/1.471 slash with four HRs)
BUT HE DIDN’T EVEN START ON SATURDAY AGAINST A LEFTY
I just don’t trust the Orioles to make the right decisions with their roster construction
I wrote about Larnach a few times in the off-season as a post hype player I was targeting in deeper formats since we knew he’d be on the bench against lefties
but has gone 14-for-51 (.275) over his last 13 games with three home runs and 10 RBI
He’s beholden to the whims of Rocco Baldelli and won’t play against lefties
but his overall batted ball profile is interesting enough in deeper formats if you need an outfielder
A player in a similar situation is Max Kepler - OF
who the Phillies said would be their everyday left fielder but is still sitting against lefties this year
Kepler has three home runs this week and has gone 13-for-41 (.317) over his last 12 games with six RBI
That will lead to decent results in that lineup
Like Victor Scott II, Miguel Vargas appeared in my article this week on hitters to add based on their plate discipline and contact rates
making 83% contact overall and rarely swinging and missing
He’s pulling the ball slightly less this season and has focused less on lifting the ball
but a 90.3 mph average exit velocity is pretty good
Another multi-position option for deeper formats could be Romy Gonzalez - 1B/2B/3B/SS
Now that Triston Casas is out for the season
BOS (0% rostered) will primarily split the reps at 1B
With Refsnyder mainly playing against lefties
I think Gonzalez will get the first chance at 1B
but he does have a 93.3 mph average exit velocity and 9.1% barrel rate this season
He also has career-high pull and fly ball rates
and while he’s making less contact than he has before
his approach could be intriguing at Fenway Park
I just can’t imagine he’s the first baseman for that long
so I’d encourage you to check that out for more of my thoughts
PHI: 40% rosteredSuarez is set to come off the IL today
We know who Suarez is at this point in his career
but he’s a valuable pitcher in the midst of all this chaos
Another pitcher nearing a return to MLB action is Ryan Weathers - SP
who threw 62 pitches at Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday
He’s set for one more rehab assignment this week
where the Marlins can get him up over 70 pitches
and then he’s likely to return the week of May 12th
The only issue is that he’d likely line up for a first start against the Cubs
Griffin Canning - SP, NYM: 38% rostered I spoke to Canning last week about the changes he’s made since coming to the Mets
and I don’t think this early hot start is 100% flukey
LAD: 34% rosteredTony Gonsolin made his return to the Dodgers’ rotation this week and struck out nine batters in his six innings
but it’s nice to see Gonsolin back and going six innings
He is not likely to miss bats at this rate
but he has always been a solid ratio started,r and the team context is obviously great
but I think he’s just a streamer in 12-team leagues
DET: 32% rostered I guess people don’t want to add Kahnle because he doesn’t throw hard and the Tigers mix and match their late-inning relievers
and Detroit has no problem running out a closer who doesn’t have elite strikeout upside or a big fastball
Kahnle has five saves and a 0.71 ERA in 12 appearances so far this year
just note that the Tigers like to use Kahnle in high-leverage situations
which will also mean save opportunities for Will Vest - RP
who is worth an add if you need saves as well
which made him one of the most dropped players in Yahoo formats
but he has allowed just four runs on eight hits in 13 innings this season
He’ll still be back in high-leverage innings and will get some save chances
Matthew Liberatore - SP, STL: 32% rostered I covered Liberatore in detail in my Starting Pitcher News article
so check that out for a more detailed breakdown
but I think Liberatore is a fine option for decent ratios and a low strikeout total
BOS: 30% rostered Bello has been good in his return to the Red Sox rotation
posting a 2.55 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 17.2 innings across three starts
and I like that he’s been attacking with the sinker more and using the four-seam fastball upstairs to try and get swings and misses
the command of his slider and changeup remains inconsistent
which has hurt him in two-strike counts and has made him a bit frustrating
but he’s not putting it together right now
Shelby Miller - RP, ARI: 25% rostered I spoke to both Shelby Miller and Kevin Ginkel - RP, ARI (7% rostered) this week before the Mets game and wrote up my thoughts on the Arizona bullpen situation here
I would be prioritizing Miller on the waiver wire
just remember that Justin Martinez’s MRI came back clean
so we’re not dealing with a major injury here
There’s a chance Martinez is back in a few weeks and pitching like himself after a brief reset
OAK: 23% rostered I watched Hoglund’s debut
but he gets elite extension on it and has good vertical movement
which allows him to get whiffs up in the zone
He also features a solid sinker with tons of arm-side run and a changeup that’s seven mph slower than the sinker and darts low and out of the zone
He had no problem throwing the changeup to righties and lefties
but I didn’t love either the cutter or the slider
My worry is that this isn’t a package that will lead to many strikeouts when he’s not facing the Marlins
but I liked the foundation of it enough to add him and see how this pans out
HOU: 19% rostered I felt the need to cover McCullers here because he’s a big name and is making his season debut today
but I can’t tell you to run out and grab him right now
We have no idea how effective he’ll be or how long Houston will let him pitch in games
I could easily see a situation where he’s piggybacked with Ryan Gusto so the Astros don’t strain McCullers too much
BOS: 14% rostered Giolito returned to the mound for the Red Sox this week
which is why I made that direct one-for-one swap in a few leagues
He was pretty good for the first half of the season in 2023 before the White Sox traded him across the country
I think we’ve written his obituary too early
His four-seam fastball had more juice again
and the fastball/changeup combination is a good one
The Red Sox are clearly working to re-shape his slider back to his older version
who seems likely to hold down a rotation spot as long as Walker Buehler is sidelined
turned his splitter into a splinker that he can command
and separated his slider into a slider and a sweeper
That has given him a six-pitch mix with decent command
and I’m not worried about his start against the Royals this week
CHC: 14% rostered Another option who I think scared people off because of one horrible outing against Arizona last week
Ryan Pressly has looked average in Chicago and had fluid drained from his knee last week
Hodge is a solid reliever who posted an elite 1.88 ERA last season
so you’re going to want whoever is closing games for them
CLE: 12% rostered This guy is always going to pull me back in
The Guardians have made some clear changes to try and get more swing-and-miss into Ortiz’s pitch mix
it has presented some clear long-term upside for him as well
He is utilizing his changeup far more than he has before and has switched up the locations on his cutter to get more swinging strikes
I’m still expecting inconsistency as he gets comfortable with the changes
Ben Casparius - RP, LAD: 8% rostered I covered Casparius in detail in my Starting Pitcher News article this Wednesday
I was asked last week if I could mention some players that I think it might be time to move on from in shallower formats
so below are a few players I would be cutting in 10-12 team leagues
Most of the names will be hitters because I believe those fringe SPs should always be on and off your roster in shallower formats based on their upcoming matchups
and I’m starting to think the only way the Diamondbacks can call Jordan Lawlar up is to play him at 3B
and make Gurriel and Pavin Smith a platoon in LF
Jonathan India - 2B/3B/OF - KC: 42% rostered: I was never a huge fan
the ballpark is going to take all of his power away
so you’re looking at a .260 hitter with minimal speed and no power in a fairly average lineup
and he just might not be healthy until they put him on the IL
STL 32% rostered: He just barely plays for St
and I can’t hold him until he starts to play and produce again
LAA: 27% rostered: His value was in his speed
but he’s had multiple soft tissue injuries this season and is not running

Shough was taken with the 40th overall pick of the NFL Draft on Apr
and there's a strong chance the 25-year-old might start at quarterback for the Saints in his very first NFL game
There's a lot to figure out between now and then
but it's hard to imagine a Saints player ever wearing that number again after Drew Brees brought New Orleans numerous passing records and a Super Bowl over all those years in the black and gold
On Friday, 12-year Saints punter and former Pro Bowler Thomas Morstead caught wind that Shough was considering his old number six as well as 18, and selflessly suggested that Shough should go for the single digit
take #6!" Morstead posted on X (formerly Twitter)
"I hope it is as good to you as it was to me
There aren't many better stewards of the Saints franchise than Morstead
The 39-year-old is still in the NFL as the punter for the New York Jets
but he gave everything he had to the Saints and the city of New Orleans from 2009 to 2020
Perhaps Shough can continue that fan favorite heritage of the number six in black and gold
He's yet to officially announce a decision

Last week we discussed one of the Blackhawks better free-agent acquisitions from the 2024 offseason during a deep dive on Teuvo Teravainen’s 2024-25 season in Chicago
because it’s focusing on a free-agent signing who had nowhere near the level of success that Teuvo did
It’s the active player — don’t forget that Shea Weber’s on the books here
— with the biggest cap hit on the Blackhawks at the moment: Tyler Bertuzzi
Fitzgerald frustrated as he heads to IL with left rib fractureMay 2nd
SAN FRANCISCO -- Tyler Fitzgerald knew something felt off when he dove to his left and landed hard on his glove hand during the Giants’ game against the Rangers last Friday
He was initially diagnosed with a bone bruise in his chest and sat out two games to try to recover
but the discomfort got progressively worse when he returned to the lineup earlier this week at San Diego
“I was trying to be out there and play through it for my team and everything
but it got to a point in my last at-bat [on Wednesday]
I hit the fly ball to right and I was in a lot of pain,” Fitzgerald said
“I knew it was probably a little bit more than what we initially thought
That’s kind of when I realized something was wrong
so I knew we should probably get it checked up on.”
Fitzgerald’s suspicions were confirmed after an MRI exam on Thursday showed that he has a left rib fracture, prompting the Giants to place their starting second baseman on the 10-day injured list and recall infielder Brett Wisely from Triple-A Sacramento prior to the club’s 4-3 series-opening loss to the Rockies at Oracle Park
will be completely shut down from baseball activities for the next few days
but he said he’s aiming to return to action in a couple of weeks
He batted .301 with an .820 OPS over his first 22 games
but his production slowed after he suffered the injury last week
as he went only 1-for-8 over his next three games
… I wasn’t really able to get the best swings off
I took some fastballs down the middle to strike out on
I was a little scared to swing because of the pain
We’re going to go with whoever’s up next and hopefully they’ll be able to help out the team a little bit more than what I was doing.”
who started at second base against left-hander Kyle Freeland and went 1-for-4 on Thursday
will likely draw most of the playing time while Fitzgerald is out
the Giants also figure to mix in the left-handed-hitting Wisely
who has recorded an .851 OPS against right-handed pitching over 26 games for the River Cats this year

“It’s a little bit of a lefty-righty tandem,” manager Bob Melvin said
“It doesn’t mean it’s going to be a strict platoon
Koss has played pretty well when he’s been in there
but Wisely will get at least one game of the next three
and then we’ll see where it goes as far as performance.”
hit .238 with an .623 OPS and four home runs over 91 games with the Giants last year
though he was surprisingly left off the Opening Day roster following the emergence of Koss this spring
He found out he was being promoted thanks to Fitzgerald
who called to share the news about 30 minutes before Wisely heard from Sacramento manager Dave Brundage on Thursday
Wisely said he felt he lost his swing during Spring Training and spent the early part of the season trying to find it at Triple-A
two home runs and 10 RBIs over his last seven games for the River Cats
“I think the last 10 days or so it’s been his best work,” Melvin said
“That’s one of the reasons that I don’t want him sitting around too long before he’s in a game
Justin Verlander was in line for his first win as Giant after giving up two runs over a season-high 6 1/3 innings and departing with a 3-2 lead
but he was forced to settle for a no-decision after the Rockies rallied to score two runs against Tyler Rogers in the eighth
The 42-year-old right-hander is now winless through his first seven starts
matching the longest drought to start a season of his 20-year career
The last time he had to wait this long to get on the board was 2015
when he went 0-3 with a 5.57 ERA through his first seven outings for the Tigers

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport: Seattle Seahawks releasing wide receiver Tyler Lockett
Tyler Lockett spent a decade in Seattle before being released this offseason
the veteran receiver is eager to experience new surroundings
"I'm excited about it," Lockett said on Tuesday, via the Titans' official website
and you are trying to [find] ways where you fit in
My dad has told me it's refreshing to go to a new place because it challenges you
The 32-year-old signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Titans, bringing experience to the receiving corps for No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward
Lockett is coming off a season in which he generated just 600 yards on 49 catches with two touchdowns in 17 games
well below his production from the previous six seasons
The veteran doesn't believe Father Time curtailed his output last season. Lockett reiterated that he'd sacrificed some production for the betterment of the club
I understand sometimes there are so many things you need as a receiver to work out just for you to be able to get the ball," he said
"But there is so much more that people don't see that teams require and that teams need
but it's about how you build each other up
I sacrificed a lot of stuff last year (in Seattle) for the better of the team
and I just believe that is what you want to do in order to be able to try and help the team be at its best."
The Seahawks focused on getting former first-rounder Jaxon Smith-Njigba more involved last season and wanted to keep DK Metcalf happy
Those plans might have come at Lockett's expense
The wideout isn't heading to Tennessee to prove he still has juice left or to hit any major goals
He's a Titan to help Ward and others turn a listless program into a winner
"I don't think I need to prove that to anybody
I just need to continue to build in a healthy way and not try to waste my time trying to do all this proving people wrong

New Orleans is known for avoiding taking quarterbacks early in the National Football League Draft
The Saints have become notorious for this and their selection of Shough in the second round of the 2025 National Football League Draft actually was their highest selection of a signal-caller since taking Archie Manning with the No
Clearly, the Saints broke precedent by taking Shough so early so they must like him. While this is the case, Pro Football Network's Jacob Infante made a pretty wild prediction that the Saints won't stick with Shough for long and will take Arch Manning in the 2026 NFL Draft in the first round
The New Orleans Saints drafted Tyler Shough in Round 2 this year
but the idea of a Manning leading the offense in New Orleans feels right
"Arch Manning enters the 2025 season with just two college starts under his belt
and he still needs to improve his footwork and feel for backside pressure
and has a live arm with strong off-platform mechanics
He’s not QB1 yet — but he’s a clear top-three pick in this mock."
It's aggressive to be thinking about the 2026 NFL Draft and even more surprising to think that the Saints will break precedent in back-to-back years

Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell are both dealing with different injuries
and there's no timetable for their return
More news: Will Dodgers Bring Shohei Ohtani Back as Pitcher With Mounting Injuries?
The 2024 season was headlined by injury woes for the Dodgers
and the opening month of the 2025 campaign appears to be unraveling quite similarly
Glasnow missed the postseason because of an elbow sprain
and it was certainly a huge disappointment the Dodgers had to enter October without their ace
the right-hander arrived to Camelback Ranch with one goal in mind: staying healthy
The 31-year-old made mechanical adjustments in camp this spring in an effort to preserve his health
Manager Dave Roberts spoke about Glasnow's ramping up process at Camelback Ranch
my opinion is he gets too mechanical at times and not let his natural athleticism and compete kind of drive his outing,” Roberts said at the time
He’s freed himself up a lot more this spring
“The main thing with Tyler is after starts
he didn’t feel comfortable with his arm and there was some residual (discomfort)
it’s really free and easy and he’s recovering really well.”
the right-hander dealt with not one but two injuries in the opening month of the season
Glasnow left a start against the Texas Rangers with leg cramps
and the following week made an untimely exit against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of right shoulder discomfort
the Dodgers have limited information as to why Glasnow has dealt with a total of five injuries since joining the team
Roberts admitted trying to uncover the reason behind Glasnow's injury history has been challenging
“There’s the mechanics piece of it," he said
I think we’re all just – as Tyler said it – very frustrated and trying to get to the bottom of it.”

debut as ump joins twin brother at MLB levelMay 5th
LOUIS -- Somewhere along the drive between Columbus
Louis -- it’s still kind of foggy to rookie umpire Tyler Jones
because he was battling heavy rains and the tears in his eyes -- he and his twin brother and fellow MLB umpire Austin Jones shared a special moment
To try and make Saturday’s six-hour drive seemingly go by faster
Tyler tried calling as many people as he could who helped him along his journey to becoming an MLB umpire
who umpired a Texas Rangers game less than a year earlier for his own MLB debut
"[Austin] actually texted me right before [Game 1] and said there’s nothing like your first … unless you make two games in the same day,” said Tyler Jones, who worked Games 1 and 2 of Sunday’s doubleheader between the Cardinals and Mets
“But it was really cool to call him [while driving to St
just because of going to umpire school together and then watching him make his debut last season when I was able to go to Dallas
When Tyler got his big league callup to Busch Stadium on Sunday
it allowed him and Austin to become the fourth set of brothers -- but the first set of twins -- to umpire games at the MLB level
Tim and William Welke and Emil and Edwin Jimenez as brothers to work at the MLB level
have been able to accomplish their big league dreams within a year of one another made the moment sweeter
who worked first base in Game 1 and third base in Game 2
of becoming the first set of twins to umpire in MLB
“I know a couple of sets of twins from back home and they went their own paths after high school
whether it’s military or something like that
But for he and I to still share this same interest -- and to be able to do it together for 11 years and be each other’s support system -- it’s been great
if I’m in any bind I can give him a call and we can hash it out
We can get really mad at each other and 30 minutes later it’s over.”
Tyler said he and Austin first started umpiring Little League games when they were still attending Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston
and they both chose umpiring as their profession before entering umpire school
Austin made it to the big leagues 11 years later
when likely future Hall of Fame pitcher Max Scherzer recorded the 3,400th strikeout of his career
Tyler was in attendance that night to celebrate his twin’s milestone moment
Tyler found out he was going to the big leagues on Saturday when he got a call from a supervisor
meant that he had a six-hour drive to get to St
"A lot of phone calls and after a while
I just cut the music off and reminisced over 12 years [as an umpire] and 11 years in the Minor Leagues
There were a lot of thoughts going on,” he said
Louis and then walking onto the field today
“I think I ran out with [veteran umpire] Chris [Segal]
‘I don’t know where my feet are right now.’ I didn’t really feel my feet for like the first three innings and then you realize
Jones also got a measure of validation late in Sunday’s Game 1 when his ruling that first baseman Pete Alonso’s foot came off the bag was upheld by a replay review
"That’s always a good feeling,” Jones said of his call being upheld
“Your heart stops during [the replay review] and you never know [what might happen]
a never say never tale that has landed in the laps of the Dallas Cowboys post-NFL Draft on Saturday evening
The Cowboys have agreed to terms and will sign undrafted rookie free agent tight end Tyler Neville of the University of Virginia when he arrived here at The Star on Thursday
"It's one of the coolest feelings in the world," Neville said on his first day as a pro
"I didn't know what to expect coming in here
The Cowboys signed nearly 10 these guys who went undrafted over the past week
just as they have done with dozen of players over the years
along with current guys like Terrance Steele
Markquese Bell and Hunter Luepke over the past couple of years
The odds usually are stacked against these undrafted free agents
though their stories and journeys into the NFL can be rather remarkable fueled by a can-do spirit defying these nearly fictional Paper Lion type beginnings
is one that will illicit either tears or goose bumps
though his relentless approach will bring smiles to your face
"Resiliency," says Cowboys tight end coach Lunda Wells
to still be chasing his dreams to play in the NFL after going through all he went through and still on the horse trying to ride into the NFL."
needing surgery by 2-years old to implant ear tubes to enable him to hear
just the first of nearly 20 surgeries he would endure by the time he was 18
he suddenly was having trouble breathing during basketball practice
Turns out he was suffering from pectus excavatum
a condition where the breastbone and rib cage begin growing inward
creating a depression on the chest and putting undo pressure on the lungs and heart
Neville had to undergo surgery to implant a metal bar across his chest to counter the deformity
along with having also to undergo several more ear tube surgeries
The insertion of the metal bar forced him to pause playing basketball and football
a few months before his freshman year in high school
Neville was diagnosed with Stage II Hodgins Lymphoma
asking his parents at the time when told his of biopsy results if he still could go to basketball practice that night
And because of the metal bar inserted into his chest
the teenager could not undergo radiation treatment
Neville had begun and continued to resume basketball practice
On his Tyler Neville "Angels Among Us" Foundation website
his daily chemo routine is described this way:
First to arrive at the clinic doors each morning for chemotherapy
Tyler was home by mid-afternoon to work with tutors
Tyler was at basketball practice--fighting through nausea
The neuropathy was evident when warming up before a game
Tyler sprained his ankle after taking a shot
The injury sidelined him for a couple weeks
but it felt like months as the excitement and camaraderie he enjoyed as a player was the highlight and focus of his day
and resumed playing football and at a high level
though he continued to practice even though the Ivy League had suspended play
During the 2021 season he played in 10 football games
Neville tied for the team lead with four touchdown receptions
By 2023 he earned second team FCS All-America honors and became a two-time All-Ivy League player
Over his three-year playing career Nevill played in 30 career games
698 yards and 8 touchdowns for the Harvard Crimson
Set to graduate from Harvard in the spring of 2024
Neville had numerous offers to continue his football career at the FBS level
and committed to Virginia for his final year of eligibility while working toward a master's degree

playAdam Schefter: Justin Tucker's future with the Ravens is in jeopardy (0:45)Adam Schefter reports on Justin Tucker's future with the Ravens after the team drafted Arizona kicker Tyler Loop
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- After weeks of working out kickers all over the country, Baltimore Ravens senior special teams coach Randy Brown had a clear-cut message for the team heading into the draft
Drafting Loop was the first sign that the team was thinking about life without the NFL's most accurate kicker. The Ravens released Tucker
who is being investigated by the league for sexual misconduct
"Sometimes football decisions are incredibly difficult
and this is one of those instances," DeCosta said in a statement
we have made the tough decision to release Justin Tucker
Justin created many significant and unforgettable moments in Ravens history
resilience and extraordinary talent made him one of the league's best kickers for over a decade
We are grateful for Justin's many contributions while playing for the Ravens
We sincerely wish him and his family the very best in this next chapter of their lives."
The Ravens had previously drafted four specialists in their history -- three punters and one long-snapper -- and all won their jobs as rookies
Loop's strong leg and consistent swing separated him from the other college prospects and made him the top candidate to become Tucker's potential successor
It didn't matter that Loop's field goal percentage declined in all four years at Arizona
When the Ravens put on tape of Loop kicking
"He's one of these guys [who is] a kicking nerd
and you like to see that," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said
"He's really into every detail and technique
and he studied Justin a lot and a lot of other guys
The Ravens' rookie minicamp last weekend marked the first time when most team officials met Loop and saw him kick in person
and that will help us address what our decision-making is going to be moving forward," DeCosta said before minicamp
Harbaugh said Loop delivered a strong first impression Sunday at rookie minicamp
where he watched Loop kick in person for the first time
and the way the ball comes off his foot is impressive."
The Ravens selected Arizona kicker Tyler Loop with the No
186 pick of the 2025 draft. AP Photo/Charlie RiedelLoop can't count the number of times he met with the Ravens during the predraft process
but it was enough to let him know that Baltimore was definitely interested
He met with a scout at the Hula Bowl in January and then spoke with Brown during the specialist workout at the NFL scouting combine in February
Loop also had a private workout with Brown in Arizona
The moment when Loop felt like he was going to Baltimore was after the New England Patriots used a sixth-round pick on Andres Borregales
who was the first kicker drafted this year
the Ravens phoned Loop to inform him that he was going to be the No
total elation getting the call," Loop said
When NFL teams draft kickers, it's usually with the intent of them playing immediately. Of the 19 kickers taken over the past 10 drafts, 14 of them were their respective team's full-time kicker as a rookie. The last kicker who was drafted and didn't play for that team in his first season was Justin Rohrwasser
who was selected in the fifth round by New England in 2020 and cut before the start of the regular season
none of those draft picks had to replace a kicker like Tucker
who holds the NFL marks for best career field goal percentage (89.1%) and longest field goal (66 yards)
Tucker finished the 2024 season with a career-low 73.3% field goal percentage
Asked how much pressure he would feel to follow in Tucker's footsteps
"I think it's really exciting more than pressure
just because it gives you something to shoot for
Loop has dealt with challenges during his college career
He has had three different special teams coaches
which is a big reason his success rate went from 100% as a freshman (12-of-12) to 78.3% in his final season (18-of-23)
Loop showed his leg strength with a 62-yard field goal
He then solidified himself as ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.'s top kicker at the NFL combine
where he hit 13 of 14 field goal attempts (93.3%) and finished by making a 60-yarder
"I'd say the one thing that I hang my hat on is being a student of craft," Loop said
"There are days where you're not in a groove
you can always fall back on your mechanics to be successful and make kicks."
When the Ravens were deciding on taking a kicker, they could have gone with Florida State's Ryan Fitzgerald, who led college football in field goal percentage by making all 13 attempts, or Pittsburgh's Ben Sauls
who kicked at the Steelers' home stadium and knows about playing in the AFC North weather conditions
"Randy believes in you," Harbaugh told Loop on the phone after the Ravens drafted him

the draft often overshadows the impactful players who go undrafted but still carve out meaningful careers
One such story emerging from the 2025 NFL Draft is that of Tyler Neville
a tight end from the University of Virginia
who signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent (UDFA)
Despite being overlooked during the draft’s seven rounds
and raw potential have made him a prospect worth watching
$2,975,000 undrafted free agent contract with the Cowboys
which includes a $10,000 signing bonus and $100,000 guaranteed
This notable financial investment suggests the Cowboys see real upside in the 6’4”
This move signals not only an opportunity for Neville but also a testament to his perseverance and potential to surprise the NFL
Tyler Nevill’s story is nothing short of inspirational
he underwent multiple surgeries as a child to restore his hearing
an early chapter in what would become a life defined by resilience
Unlike many athletes whose obstacles begin and end on the field
Neville’s challenges started at birth
they helped forge a mindset rooted in perseverance
While attending high school in Massachusetts
Neville was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
he began undergoing chemotherapy treatments
Where most would have stepped away from the field
Neville continued to participate in athletics
refusing to let cancer define his identity or steal his dreams
That experience solidified his drive. He had this to say about his life story:
My purpose each day was to push through the hard times in order to enjoy the good times
I think perseverance can be everyone’s story…it just depends on how we respond to adversity”
His battle against cancer became a defining moment that shaped his work ethic
These qualities make him a valuable asset in the locker room
Neville’s personal triumphs off the field have earned him admiration beyond the stat sheet
he received the prestigious Nason Award for Courage and Sportsmanship
which recognized his inspirational journey and character
Neville began his college football journey at Harvard University
While the Ivy League doesn’t often receive the spotlight of the Power Five conferences
He accumulated over 600 receiving yards and scored eight touchdowns during his time with the Crimson
helping elevate Harvard’s offensive versatility and serving as a go-to target in the red zone
Neville sought greater exposure and tougher competition
He transferred to the University of Virginia for his final year of NCAA eligibility
stepping into the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
A leap that offered a chance to test his skills against elite defenses
During the 2024 season with the Cavaliers, Neville posted 37 receptions for 394 yards and two touchdowns
He consistently demonstrated a strong catch radius
and the ability to block both in-line and in space
TYLER NEVILLE, AGAIN‼️That's his first career multi-TD game 💯 pic.twitter.com/MgB49QtstH
He showed adaptability in Virginia’s pro-style offense
which often required tight ends to take on complex assignments
Catching two touchdown passes against Wake Forest and his pass protection showed his versatility
as he is both a serviceable receiver and a capable blocker
Those skills are what make Neville a compelling NFL project
The Dallas Cowboys have made a habit of unearthing gems from undrafted rookies
and Tyler Nevill could be the next in line
The current depth chart features starter Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker
with the third tight end spot up for grabs
Neville enters a favorable situation where he can compete immediately
and background make him a natural fit for an offense that values tight ends’ contributions in both the passing and running games
The Cowboys’ offense under new Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer should be similar to 2024’s offense and deploy 12-personnel formations where Schottenheimer values positional flexibility
Neville could become an asset not just as a receiving target but as an extra blocker in short-yardage and red zone packages
Neville also profiles as an immediate contributor on special teams
which is often the key for undrafted players to secure a roster spot
and willingness to do the dirty work put him in a strong position to impress during training camp and preseason action
Tyler Neville’s path to the NFL has never been traditional
but it’s precisely that journey that may make him successful in Dallas
marked by personal trials and academic and athletic excellence
mirrors the traits NFL teams look for when building depth with developmental upside
Neville will have a chance to prove himself against NFL-caliber talent and earn a spot on the Cowboys’ roster
His ability to contribute across multiple phases
adds to his value as a developmental prospect
Nevill has been overcoming odds his entire life
Making the Cowboys roster as an undrafted rookie may be his next big challenge
it’s that betting against him is a mistake
Tyler Neville’s story is more than just a football narrative; it’s a tale of resilience
From beating cancer to excelling in the Ivy League and now landing with one of the NFL’s most storied franchises
Neville is the type of player fans rally behind and coaches root for
While he may not have been a household name during the draft
he now has the chance to become one in Dallas as an undrafted rookie
Keep an eye on Neville this; his journey is far from over
and it might just be one of the NFL’s best underdog stories in 2025

This is the key to Soderstrom's breakoutApril 29th
This edition of the Athletics Beat newsletter was written by Theo DeRosa
WEST SACRAMENTO -- Tyler Soderstrom knows just how hard it is to hit in the Major Leagues
“It’s a big adjustment up here,” the Athletics first baseman said before Friday’s series-opening 6-5 win against the White Sox at Sutter Health Park
In his first taste of the Majors, Soderstrom found out firsthand. MLB’s No. 39 overall prospect at the time, he struggled after being called up in July 2023
batting .160 with a .472 OPS in 45 games that season and being optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas for 10 days in August
Soderstrom started 2024 in the Minors
he was hitting .174 with just one home run
which came in his first contest of the season
Many hitters would have lost their confidence. Not Soderstrom
Soderstrom has been the same guy -- but his game has taken off
the 23-year-old enters Tuesday tied with Mike Trout for second place in the American League with nine home runs this season
It’s not Brent Rooker or Lawrence Butler who’s been the A’s best hitter (in terms of OPS) in 2025
“Sode’s just kind of our anchor right now,” Rooker said
and we like the lineup that surrounds him as well.”
it’s something that I wanted to keep doing
kept working on it in the offseason and Spring Training
The results speak for themselves. Soderstrom is pulling the ball in the air almost twice as much as he did in 2023 or ‘24, and that often translates to prodigious power. There’s plenty of red on his Statcast page
A’s fans have seen a more selective Soderstrom this year
He’s chasing pitches out of the zone considerably less than he did in his first two MLB campaigns
and he’s also swung at fewer first pitches -- something he said is a consequence of what he learned from Bleday
I really like where Tyler’s at,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said
“He’s got great discipline right now in determining when to swing [and] when not to.”
As far as defensively? According to Statcast, Soderstrom has been one of the poorest defenders in the Majors at first base (-3 Outs Above Average), although catcher Shea Langeliers praised Soderstrom’s defense as “unbelievable” and commended his progress with the glove. With top prospect Nick Kurtz playing first base nearly every day
Soderstrom has recently seen lots of time in left field
but it doesn’t seem like anything Soderstrom can’t handle
he picked up a key outfield assist in the seventh inning on a strong throw to third base
anybody would tell you that he’s one of the most talented players on the team,” Langeliers said
you keep getting at-bats and just stay mentally tough
He’s growing up right in front of our eyes
Soderstrom has cooled off a bit power-wise
with his last home run coming 10 games ago on April 17
While he’s not sending balls soaring out of ballparks seemingly every day
he’s still hitting -- he went 2-for-3 on Thursday and 3-for-4 on Friday
and coming out of those dips is kind of where the confidence is really built
It’s been fun to see him overcome those things.”
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens declined the fifth-year option on Tyler Linderbaum on Wednesday
but they intend to retain the two-time Pro Bowl center
The decision to not pick up Linderbaum's option is based on the unusually high financial commitment and not performance
Linderbaum's fifth-year option would have been $23.4 million in 2026
which would have been $5.4 million more than the NFL's highest-paid center in terms of average per year
has quickly become one of the NFL's best centers as well as one of Baltimore's top leaders
He is now entering the final year of his rookie contract and can become an unrestricted free agent in March if the Ravens don't sign him to a contract extension
"It is our intention for him to remain a Raven long term," Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement
On the first day of the Ravens' offseason conditioning program
Linderbaum said he had not yet had any conversations with Baltimore about a contract extension
I'm really not even focused on that right now," Linderbaum said on April 21
The Ravens also announced they are exercising the fifth-year option for Pro Bowl safety Kyle Hamilton
DeCosta said in the statement that the Ravens picked up Hamilton's option "with the goal of working toward a multi-year contract extension."
Baltimore selected Hamilton and Linderbaum in the first round in 2022. The Ravens drafted Hamilton at No. 14 and then chose Linderbaum with the No. 25 pick, which was acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for wide receiver Hollywood Brown
If center Tyler Linderbaum remains with the Ravens for the 2026 season
it will have to be on a different contract than his current one
The Ravens announced on Wednesday that they will not exercise their fifth-year option on Linderbaum’s rookie deal. Safety Kyle Hamilton’s option is going to be picked up
General Manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement that the team is interested in signing Linderbaum to a new contract
“While we will not apply the fifth-year option to Tyler Linderbaum
it is our intention for him to remain a Baltimore Raven long term,” DeCosta said
Linderbaum would have been guaranteed $23.403 million under the terms of the option
That would make him the highest-paid center in the league by far
so a deal that puts him in the same $17-18 million average annual salary as Creed Humphrey and Cam Jurgens is likely the route the Ravens will try to go
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Tyler Collet never had an easier time getting to a major
closing with an even-par 72 on Wednesday to win the PGA Professional Championship by a record 10 shots to lead 20 club pros who qualified for the PGA Championship
Collet started the final round on the Wanamaker course at PGA Golf Club with a seven-shot lead and that was never challenged
and he achieved that by making an 18-foot bogey putt on the final hole
"My mindset the whole week was not to move backward," said Collet
the assistant pro at John's Island Club about 15 miles away in Vero Beach
He finished at 15-under 272 and will be playing for the fourth time in the PGA Championship
which starts May 15 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte
far more drama was toward the bottom of the leaderboard
Four players who finished at even par were in a sudden-death playoff for the 20th and final spot at Quail Hollow. Andrew Svoboda was eliminated on the first hole with a bogey
while Dakun Chang three-putted on the next hole to get bumped
It came down to 60-year-old Brad Lardon and Michael Kartrude
who made bogey on the 18th hole in regulation and thought that might cost him
Lardon had a 7-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole that stopped one turn from dropping
Lardon couldn't reach the green in two at the par-5 13th -- the fourth playoff hole -- and his wedge to a back pin trickled off the back
He used putter and began to celebrate when the putt hit the center of the flagstick and somehow banged out
Kartrude chipped to 4 feet and had that birdie left for the win
and Lardon removed his cap to congratulate him as soon as the ball left Kartrude's putter
and they were on to the fifth playoff hole
Kartrude sent his tee shot far to the right and into the trees
he hit a power fade around the trees and onto the green
Lardon chipped to 7 feet and missed the par putt
That might not have been possible if not for a meltdown by Jesse Mueller
He was among the top 20 and looked to be in good shape at 2 under for the tournament and playing the par-5 16th
with enough of the golf ball showing he decided to remove his socks and shoes to stand in the muddy creek
The shot came out clear -- perhaps too clean -- and sailed into a palmetto bush
Mueller couldn't find it and had to return to the spot of his previous shot
took two chips to get on and made a quadruple-bogey 9
That ultimately allowed the four players at even par to have a chance
is among 12 professionals who qualified for the PGA Championship for the first time
and his geographical inspirations—whether muggy Tennessee or the sun-dried Southwest—mean his music is always a hair’s breadth from sentimentalizing American dreams that he wants to interrogate
With the nation in free fall and everyone’s horizons narrowing
Tyler has tempered his optimism: The 45-year-old’s latest
includes a dimmed palette and a downcast scope
The shift makes for his most ambitious full-length yet
Time Indefinite is still steeped in the American mythos, but this time the focus is on small remnants of life, not sweeping evocations of wide expanses. Tyler incorporates found sound, notably from a reel-to-reel he discovered while combing through his late grandfather’s belongings in Jackson, Mississippi. The machine’s damaged whirring and Tyler’s waltzing, Victrola-ready melodies recall British ambient icon the Caretaker
known for digging up pre-World War II big-band recordings and layering them into faded
But Time Indefinite reaches for an atmosphere that’s a bit closer to home
It often feels like a television tuned to a religious station on Christmas
glowing and murmuring with speech and song after everyone has drifted off to sleep
The LP’s 48 minutes are filled with tiny snatches of AM-style theme music
deteriorating production that suggests these warped snippets have lasted into a post-cataclysmic future
The wind whistles on “The Hardest Land to Harvest,” as though through a barren
Tyler plays archaeologist of the modern era
imagining how elements of today’s society could one day become relics
his preoccupation with impermanence and mortality isn’t exactly somber—often
Tyler uses major-key guitar melodies judiciously
which makes their shapes more memorable: After the blown-out tape distortion of opener “Cabin Six,” his six-string enters at the start of “Concern” like morning sun through a window
Acoustic strumming blends with gaping maws of synthesizer on “Anima Hotel”; the central guitar figure on “Howling at the Second Moon” grows into an unexpected string accompaniment
and Time Indefinite could only seem grating in comparison
transformative work whose deserts of noise set its staggering peaks in relief

ANAHEIM, CA. — The Detroit Tigers bullpen has turned into a revolving door − with comings
goings and more to come − trying to find the right combination "to help us win."
The Tigers designated 37-year-old right-handed reliever Kenta Maeda for assignment May 1
In addition, reliever Andrew Chafin, who did not make the Opening Day roster and was pitching for Triple-A Toledo, signed with the Washington Nationals
More: Kenta Maeda threw a pitch so bad for Detroit Tigers it didn't even get tracked by Statcast
reliever Beau Brieske has joined the Tigers in Anaheim
although he won’t be eligible to return from the 15-day injured list until May 3
President of baseball operations Scott Harris and Hinch told Maeda on May 1 at the team hotel in Anaheim
He struggled as a starter in 2024 before ending the season in the bullpen
but he was used in low leverage situations
He pitched in seven games and had a 7.88 ERA
“It's a frustrating end to his time here,” Hinch said
“He was disappointed that he just didn't get on track and didn't contribute.”
While the Tigers have helped rehab several veteran pitchers
“It was a frustrating time for him,” Hinch said
“We do want to create opportunity for the young players and young pitchers,” Hinch said
“We're really excited about Tyler and some of the adjustments that we asked him to work on from the beginning of the season
in the Carson Kelly trade to the Texas Rangers
"I heard a lot about his pitches and his mix and his high-end velo
And then we got a chance to know him in the spring
and he was very advanced in the reliever mode
being somebody that comes in and challenges hitters.”
But he struggled to throw strikes this spring
But he made some adjustments over the last few weeks
More: Javier Báez has recaptured some of the magic for Detroit Tigers
“When he got his delivery under control in Triple-A these last couple of weeks
he started to get better feel for his pitches,” Hinch said
we feel like he's somebody who can be dynamic in the pen and get lefties out
The Tigers were using Maeda in low-leverage situations
refusing to pitch him in games that he might lose a lead
“When I say this about all the guys that we bring up
where we feel like we can't use somebody or we feel like we want to stay away from somebody,” Hinch said
Hinch was not certain what the Tigers would do when Brieske is eligible to return
“We'll see how that all plays out,” Hinch said
“We have to worry about today's game and tomorrow's game and get after it the best we can to win before we can even consider what to do with Beau.”

There's no question that the Ravens want to keep their young two-time Pro Bowlers in Baltimore for a long time
as they are two of the best players in the league at their positions
the economics of the fifth-year options influenced Baltimore's decisions
which puts him under contract through the 2026 season
Linderbaum's would have cost $23.4 million since he's lumped in with all offensive linemen
The Lions' Kerby Joseph recently signed the richest deal in NFL history for a safety, which averages $21.25 million per year. Hamilton's $18.6 million would currently be the eight-highest salary cap number at his position in 2026, per OvertheCap.com
Linderbaum's $23.4 million would be far-and-away the highest salary cap figure among centers in 2026
The Chiefs' Creed Humphrey is scheduled to have an $18.1 million hit that season
Humphrey still has the highest average salary per year at $18 million and the Eagles' Cameron Jurgens
who was in Linderbaum's same 2022 draft class
$68 million deal averaging $17 million per year
which could help establish the framework for a Linderbaum extension
Earlier this month, Hamilton and Linderbaum said they're more focused on football than contract extensions
"I haven't had too many talks about it to be honest," Hamilton said
but I'm not in a rush to get it done necessarily."
"I'll let my agent handle that," Linderbaum added
"I'm just focusing on becoming as good of a football player as I can be for this team
[I'm] coming in here every day and putting my best foot forward
Let all the other things take care of itself."
