Tysons Corner Center will shake up its retail lineup with a mix of brand-new stores and existing brands undergoing renovations
The first newcomer is Mejuri, which will open its 42nd shop on the mall’s second floor near Nordstrom this Friday (April 11). This will be the Canada-based jeweler’s second location in the D.C. region, following a 2023 opening at Bethesda Row in Maryland
A third location in Georgetown is listed as “coming soon” on the company’s website
Founded in 2015 by CEO Noura Sakkijha, a third-generation jeweler, Mejuri says it’s committed to working with suppliers around the world who use “high-quality
responsibly-sourced materials.” It releases new products on a weekly basis in limited quantities
Located at a corner between Kate Spade New York and Aēsop
the Tysons Corner Center store will feature a “Mejuri Ring Bar
full-service piercing studio [and] elegant design elements
while highlighting the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and individuality,” according to a press release from the mall
“This new space offers another convenient way for the local community to experience Mejuri in person — discovering our everyday fine jewelry firsthand
and enjoying services like piercing and jewelry cleaning to make every piece truly their own,” Mejuri Vice President of Retail Courtney Hawkins said
This month is also expected to bring the launch of a newly expanded Sunglass Hut
Currently operating in a 965-square-foot space near Macy’s on the mall’s first floor
the eyewear store will move to a 1,566-square-foot suite on the second floor next to Casper in late April
More from Tysons Corner Center on what to expect from the expanded store:
The store will feature a custom Chanel wall and first of its kind
With advanced technology like LED windows and SmartShoppers – interactive screens built into the walls for seamless browsing and purchasing – and a broad range of premium sunglasses
the store will offer shoppers a unique and personalized experience
Tysons Corner Center will also welcome Gorjana
A wrap around the second-floor storefront advertises a summer 2025 launch
but the mall announced yesterday (Tuesday) that the jeweler will open on May 2 across from Nespresso
Started in 2004 as a home-based business by a couple in Laguna Beach
“We’re thrilled to open our new store in Tysons Corner
marking another exciting chapter in our national expansion,” Gorjana Reidel
“Our team is eager to bring the gorjana experience to this vibrant community and provide a space where guests can discover elevated jewelry pieces that reflect the effortless fashion of California living.”
The second half of 2025 will bring two women’s clothing stores
Reformation
a Los Angeles-based company that offers “vintage-inspired apparel with eco-friendly business practices,” started construction in late March on a “tech-enabled store concept.” The 1,116-square-foot boutique will open later this year on the mall’s second level near Sephora
In addition, Altar’d State has temporarily closed in anticipation of debuting “a new prototype” this fall
The store will open on the second floor adjacent to Blue Nile near Macy’s
“The redesigned floorplan highlights a central aisle with boutique-style sections on either side
thoughtfully curated to showcase distinct product statements and enhance the shopping experience,” Tysons Corner Center said in its press release
Though not mentioned in the release, construction appears to have started on Chip City Cookies, which is “coming soon” to the short-lived Z Ice Cream and Pastries spot adjacent to Auntie Anne’s on the mall’s second floor
from the firm Enlightened Hospitality Investments
The business now boasts 45 stores, expanding into Virginia last year with openings in Arlington’s Clarendon and Shirlington neighborhoods
Other retailers that are still in the works at Tysons Corner Center based on previous announcements and posted signage:
Maggiano’s and Level 99 will be located on the mall’s east end, where common area upgrades appear to have finished construction on time in March
The renovations included new flooring and ceiling
The Cheesecake Factory opened in the east end last December. While Level 99 will occupy the second floor of what used to be Barnes & Noble, future occupants of the first floor and the former La Sandia space have yet to be announced

Days after a judge sentenced a former Fairfax County police officer to prison in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man accused of stealing sunglasses in Tysons
Glenn Youngkin stepped in to commute his sentence
A judge sentenced Shifflett to serve three years in prison on Friday after he shot and killed a suspected shoplifter outside of Tysons Corner Center in February 2023
Shifflett had been convicted by a jury in October 2024 for recklessly handling a firearm but was not found guilty of involuntary manslaughter
Youngkin said Sunday he commuted Shifflett’s “unjust” sentencing
saying it violates “the cornerstone of our justice system” and how it’s in the interest of justice that he be released immediately
the court rejected the Senior Probation and Parole Officer’s recommendation of no incarceration nor supervised probation and instead imposed a sentence of five years’ incarceration with two suspended and an additional five years of probation,” Youngkin said in a release
According to a police account of the shooting
exit Nordstrom after taking a pair of sunglasses and head toward the parking garage
Officers said after Johnson failed to comply with orders to get on the ground
At trial, Shifflett claimed self-defense
testifying he believed Johnson possessed a firearm
The former police officer said he grew concerned about a weapon after noticing that Johnson was reaching for his waistband after falling to the ground during a brief chase on foot through a wooded area
that was the most scared I had been in my life because I thought at any moment he would pull out a gun and just start shooting me,” Shifflett said during trial
“I didn’t have the luxury to wait and see a gun because I knew in an instant I could be dead.”
Bodycam footage showed to the jury during the trial proved inconclusive
Asked why he discharged his weapon before telling Johnson to “stop reaching” toward his waistband
Shifflett said his “motor functions were operating more quickly than I could verbalize.”
earlier reflected on the Friday sentencing as a “David and Goliath moment.”

Hey Tea
is hosting a week-long grand opening celebration after serving its first customers at Tysons Corner Center last Friday (Feb
“A joyful encounter, a moment to celebrate. The train has arrived — HEYTEA Virginia Tysons Corner is right on time!” the business said in an Instagram post announcing the opening date
Located next to McDonald’s on the mall’s first floor, taking over a space vacated when Istanbul Kitchen moved to the former 7-Eleven space last year
Hey Tea encountered some technical issues that delayed its opening yesterday (Monday)
but that didn’t stop eager patrons from forming a line that stretched around the corner
Part of the attraction no doubt was a “buy a drink
get one 50% off” promotion that will remain in place through Thursday
branded fridge magnet if they post about visiting Hey Tea on social media or leave a review that includes a photo on Google
anyone who buys two drinks will receive a free
Founded in Jiangbianli, a city in China’s Guangdong province, in 2012, Hey Tea claims to be the country’s first brand to use fresh tea leaves and premium milk
rather than instant tea powder and artificial additives
to invent “cheese” tea — a kind of cold tea topped with cream cheese-flavored foam
The company now has more than 3,000 stores worldwide
with a location on Broadway in New York City in 2023
The Tysons Corner Center store is the first in the D.C
Hey Tea’s menu has a variety of fruit and milk teas
Hey Tea is located a couple of doors down from Gagawa, a Turkish chicken restaurant that had its grand opening in January
Elsewhere in the mall, signs have been posted on Barnes & Noble’s new storefront on the first floor
announcing that the bookstore is set to return this summer
Tysons Corner Center’s Plaza — home to its cherry blossom festival, Hello Kity Cafe Truck and other sacred traditions — will now be brought to shoppers by a corporate sponsor
Instead, the plaza is being rebranded as “PenFed Plaza” as part of a new partnership with PenFed Credit Union
which has its corporate headquarters in Tysons at 7940 Jones Branch Drive
A public relations representative for the mall said the terms of the sponsorship deal are not being disclosed
but the agreement will grant PenFed “exclusive branding opportunities across the Tysons Corner Center campus.”
PenFed will now be featured on both static and digital signage around the plaza and serve as the “presenting” sponsor of the mall’s WiFi network and signature events at the plaza, including the annual winter holiday kick-off celebration and the “Paws on the Plaza” event typically held each summer
PenFed members will receive special perks while shopping at Tysons Corner Center like complimentary VIP seating at Plaza events
Tysons Corner Center’s owner and developer
celebrated their partnership in the press release:
It remains to be seen whether the plaza’s new name sticks
like George Mason University rebranding its Patriot Center as EagleBank Arena
or if visitors continue just calling it The Plaza
Gagawa is now serving up more than a dozen flavors of chicken at Tysons Corner Center
The mall announced the Turkish restaurant chain’s grand opening in an Instagram post on Jan. 22, though its doors appear to have quietly opened earlier in late December
Gagawa began expanding outside of Turkey in 2021
opening a location in Cyprus that was joined by one in Madrid
It now has more than 300 restaurants worldwide
“We are very excited to open our first restaurant in the U.S. in Tysons Center,” Gagawa Chairman Ahmet Faralyalı said when the expansion was announced last spring
“Our mission is to provide everyone with the opportunity to enjoy a high quality
affordable meal in an environment where one can feel appreciated.”
the restaurant uses completely natural chicken that’s marinated for 12 to 14 hours in “unique sauces and a variety of spices.” There are 15 different options
ranging from an Ali Nazik chicken served with smoked eggplant and an Indian-style curry to barbecue and a hot-pepper-heavy dish called The Dragon
either with teriyaki sauce or with mushrooms and cream sauce
Every entree comes with a Mediterranean salad or broccoli slaw and a choice of rice or pasta
the menu has a variety of starters like falafel and crispy chicken bites as well as salads and desserts
Gagawa has a lunch special with a chicken plate
Available Monday through Friday from 11 a.m
the promotion will be offered for about a month
Other new dining options slated to open at Tysons Corner Center this year include Bora Bora Smoothie Cafe, HeyTea and Maggiano’s, which is following the Cheesecake Factory in relocating from Tysons Galleria
The mall announced on social media yesterday (Sunday) that Sunglass Hut has opened its new location on the first floor near Macy’s
Brooks Brothers and Under Armour are also moving to different spots
shoppers at Tysons Corner Center will be able to buy gifts for local charities as well as their family and friends
Northern Virginia’s biggest mall was chosen as this year’s host of the Giving Machines
philanthropic vending machines that will be unveiled with a “Grand Unwrapping” event at noon tomorrow (Saturday) outside AMC Theatres (7850 Tysons Corner Center)
Offering items and services that passersby can donate to select local and international nonprofits, the machines are coming to Tysons from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which operates machines in 106 locations around the world during the winter holidays as part of its service-minded “Light the World” initiative
Launched in 2017, the Giving Machines have inspired $32 million worth of donations for vaccines, chickens, shoes and school supplies and other needs. The initiative expanded to the D.C. area in 2022, with machines first appearing in Kensington, Maryland, and then at Ballston Quarter in Arlington
just kind of an experiment to see if this was a way in which people could impact giving and donate and what the effects would be,” Lisa Bartolomei
director of the Giving Machines in the D.C
and people and different cities have had to petition
to get this initiative in their city.”
Chosen for its heavy foot traffic and central location
Tysons Corner Center will have three Giving Machines — one at the entrance to the third-floor food court from the parking garage and two near the movie theater’s box office — from Nov
The machines will stick around longer than they did in the previous two years
when they began operating the Friday after Thanksgiving and were “unwrapped” the following Tuesday
Noting that there will be some activities on Giving Tuesday
Bartolomei says they decided to start earlier this time after hearing from people who wanted to contribute but missed the shorter window
perhaps because they were traveling for the holidays
we’ve rolled it to Saturday before [Thanksgiving],” she said
Each row in the vending machines is devoted to a different nonprofit
Chosen through a nomination and vetting process
the participating nonprofits in Tysons include five selected by local organizers
Options for donations vary depending on the nonprofit, from sewing materials or a baby goat to support the entrepreneurs assisted by Mentors International to a backpack with school supplies or food to feed a family for a week for Volunteers for America
Because the operating costs of the Giving Machines are covered by the Church
all of the donated funds go to the nonprofits
Tysons Corner Center’s machines will have staff present to answer questions and provide assistanace
that $15 towards toys and games or whatever it is
goes directly to the nonprofit,” Bartolomei said
“I really like the cleanliness of that and the confidence that that brings
inclusion in the Giving Machines helps raise awareness
which can be just as crucial as monetary support
particularly for a newer organization like REACT DC
Started in September 2021 by volunteers looking to help the thousands of Afghan refugees who arrived in Northern Virginia after the Taliban took back control of their home country
REACT DC was officially approved by the U.S
State Department as a refugee resettlement agency last year
Funded initially by a one-time grant from the International Rescue Committee
the organization has resettled 150 people so far and estimates that it’ll resettle another 200 people next year
It also offers employment and legal services as well as a women’s empowerment program that’s funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints
This is the group’s first year participating in the Giving Machines
“In places like Northern Virginia where the cost of living is very high
we rely on donations to make sure families have what they need,” Cady said
we’re offering several items in the Giving Machines
job training and micro-enterprise kits.”
the nonprofit relies on volunteers and sponsors who can assist new arrivals
Any community members who are interested in helping can visit REACT DC’s website
“The refugee resettlement program is a humanitarian program first and foremost
but refugees bring an amazing skill set to the United States
their kids are in school,” Cady said
“… We’re really excited that we’re part of the Light the World Giving Machine campaign so people who might not know about resettlement can support new arrivals.”
The iconic all-pink Hello Kitty Cafe Truck will be making its annual return to Tysons Corner Center this weekend
The truck is scheduled to set up at the Events Plaza at Tysons Corner Center (1961 Chain Bridge Road) from 10 a.m.-7 p.m
A release from the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck said the truck is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and parent company Sanrio is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hello Kitty character
The truck remains a reliable draw for Tysons Corner Center, which typically gets a visit every March. On a Facebook event page for the upcoming visit
more than a hundred people have indicated that they’re planning to go
A communications representative of the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck told FFXnow that customers at the cafe tend to be a mix of familiar faces and new
“It’s a mix of both — loyal fans who visit us year after year and new faces discovering the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck for the first time,” they said
“With Hello Kitty celebrating her 50th anniversary
it’s especially heartwarming to see multiple generations of fans coming together to share their love for her as we travel across the U.S.”
The release said the cafe will feature limited-edition merch and treats this weekend
Tysons Corner Center is closing out 2024 with the addition of a few new dining options
Though it was dark when FFXnow visited the mall around lunch time this past Sunday (Dec. 22), Popeyes has indeed opened its new stall on the first floor between Panda Express and Chef Lin
a Tysons Corner Center spokesperson confirmed
The fast-food chain started serving fried chicken
biscuits and other Southern cuisine at the mall in late November
Tysons Corner Center also recently welcomed the Cheesecake Factory, which moved from Tysons Galleria on Dec. 5, and Rice Culture
a shop that specializes in ice cream and taiyakis — a fish-shaped
Located in the third-floor food court, Rice Culture’s kiosk officially opened on Dec
offering free ice cream to its first 30 customers
“We kept this one hush hush because we weren’t sure if we would pull through
But we did it!” the business said when announcing the soft opening date on Instagram
“We are so thankful for our small team who worked very hard to get the stall opened before the end of the year.”
Started as a home-based business by MikkiJo Bayawa in early 2021, Rice Culture focused on deliveries and pop-ups at farmers markets, shopping centers and festivals before launching its first brick-and-mortar cafe near the Dunn Loring Metro station on Nov
With the Tysons kiosk now up and running, Bayawa’s team has a third location in the works at the Chantilly Crossing shopping center (14408 Chantilly Crossing Lane). The business anticipates opening the approximately 1,600-square-foot space in early March 2025, but suggested in a recent Instagram update that the buildout could finish sooner
The new year will bring more changes to Tysons Corner Center, including the arrivals of Maggiano’s and Level 99 in the east end that’s being reimagined as a “dining and entertainment wing,” according to the mall’s website
Construction on updates to the wing’s common area
some retailers are getting relocated within the mall
Tysons Galleria’s newest dining option serves up pasta made by hand right in front of customers
Scolapasta launched with a soft opening on Nov. 21 in the mall’s third-floor food court, which has been steadily filling back up after an apparently ill-fated partnership with the food hall operator Urbanspace petered out last year
according to marketing director Edrick Chan
who comes from Italy’s Modena region and previously worked at D.C
restaurants like Georgetown’s Il Canale
the eatery takes a fast-casual approach to pasta dishes
authentic taste without the long wait of a sit-down restaurant
“It’s a beautiful process,” Chan said
families will walk by [at] Galleria to watch the pasta being made
and people at Tysons Galleria have been fabulous
It’s great for somebody that wants … great quality
authentic Italian pasta within minutes.”
The menu primarily consists of build-your-own plates with patrons picking one of five pasta shapes
There are also a few “chef’s favorite” dishes that can’t be customized: a shrimp scampi made with black squid ink spaghetti; classic spaghetti and meatballs; “The Hulk” with casarecce pasta
chicken and pesto; and “The Rustica,” which also uses casarecce with mozzarella and arrabbiata
According to Chan, everyone on the restaurant’s team is from the D.C. region, and many of them have memories of visiting the malls in Tysons. They were eager to bring their concept to the area, particularly with business “booming” at the Galleria food court, thanks in part to veteran Andy’s Pizza and popular coffee shop Shotted’s recent expansion
The response to Scolapasta since its soft opening has been “overwhelming and very supportive,” according to Chan
“It was a magical night,” he said
comparing the first day of business to Black Friday or the line for a new iPhone launch
but we ended up staying open for two hours extra
Operating hours are posted on its Instagram page
Tysons Galleria Senior General Manager Rich Dinning says the mall is “thrilled to welcome Scolapasta” as well as Rabbit Taco and Char’d
serve Mexican street food and halal burgers
“These additions enhance the variety of experiences we offer and reflect our commitment to providing our guests with the best in shopping
and entertainment,” Dinning said in a statement
“We look forward to offering our visitors even more reasons to come together
and make lasting memories with family and friends.”
Scolapasta is still working on a second location in Arlington’s Ballston neighborhood. Though that site was previously expected to open first
a December or January opening is now looking likely
so you get your pasta the way you want it,” Chan said
You can enjoy all the pasta-bilities.”
police officer has been sentenced to three years in prison after he fatally shot a man accused of shoplifting outside Tysons Corner Center in 2023
A Fairfax County judge on Friday sentenced 36-year-old Wesley Shifflett to five years in prison, with two years suspended and an additional five years of probation. Shifflett was convicted in October of recklessly handling a firearm, but was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter
police were called to the Nordstrom department store in the southern area of the mall for reports of stolen designer goods
According to a police account of the shooting
an officer saw Johnson exit the store and set off an anti-theft alarm
Police chased Johnson through a parking garage and into the woods
where officers said he disobeyed orders to get on the ground
Johnson was shot after running through the parking garage and outside the mall
and died from a gunshot wound to the chest
Surveillance video footage and body camera footage showed Johnson taking a pair of sunglasses from Nordstrom
then exiting the store toward the parking garage
Plainclothes officers could be seen following Johnson out of the store and near Route 7
yelling commands to get on the ground and stop reaching for his pants
Johnson can be heard saying: “I’m not reaching for nothing
When he did not comply and ran further into a wooded area off the site of the mall
The Fairfax County Police Department fired Shifflett the following month for what Chief Kevin Davis called “a failure to live up to the expectations of our agency
the person who was responsible for this tragedy has been held accountable
brings the Johnson family a step closer on their path to healing
and I want to thank them for their tremendous grace through this process,” Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano said in a news release
Descano added that trust in police “can only be repaired by seeking accountability through the justice system
and failing to do so would make the work of our police force — who are as dedicated to community safety as I am — that much harder.”

(7News) — The Fairfax NAACP is criticizing Virginia Gov
Glenn Youngkin’s decision to commute the sentence of former Fairfax County police Sgt
who was convicted in the 2023 fatal shooting of Timothy McCree Johnson
was convicted in October 2024 of reckless discharge of a firearm
during a police chase at Tysons Corner Center
A judge sentenced Shifflett last week to five years in prison
The NAACP said Youngkin's move reinforces "deep-rooted issues of unequal accountability."
He was chased through a parking garage and into a wooded area
where officers said they ordered him to get on the ground
The Fairfax County Police Department then fired Shifflett who had been with the department for seven years
in a statement Youngkin said he was "convinced that the court's sentence of incarceration is unjust and violates the cornerstone of our justice system—that similarly situated individuals receive proportionate sentences."
Following Youngkin’s decision to commute the sentence
she said she feels like she is reliving her pain all over again
Fairfax NAACP President Niki Zimmerman called the commutation an insult to the Johnson family
"The Fairfax NAACP strongly condemns Gov
2025 to commute the sentence of former Fairfax County Police Sgt
who was convicted of reckless discharge of a firearm in the fatal shooting of Timothy McCree Johnson
2025 a judge sentenced Shifflett to three years of incarceration for reckless discharge of a firearm in the 2023 killing of Johnson
an unarmed Black man who was shot during a foot pursuit following an alleged shoplifting incident
undermines the legal process and denies the Johnson family the justice they were promised
The community deserved reassurance that such acts would not go unpunished
this decision devalues the life that was taken and reinforces the deep-rooted issues of unequal accountability in our justice system
“Governor Youngkin’s decision is not just an insult to the Johnson family—it is an affront to every Virginian who believes in equal justice under the law,” said Fairfax NAACP President Niki Zimmerman
The community was assured that there would be accountability
we are witnessing a blatant disregard for that promise
"Governor Youngkin's decision to commute the former officer's sentence is a failure of leadership and is a clear signal to the Black community about law enforcement
His decision is a dangerous message to law enforcement officers that they can take the lives of unarmed citizens without facing the full consequences of their actions
Governor Youngkin's decision further reinforces the culture of impunity that we have fought against for years
We will not back down in our fight for justice."
Governor Youngkin and his administration have consistently opposed efforts to strengthen sentencing guidelines for officers who use excessive force
prioritizing political rhetoric over real justice
Leadership at the state level must reflect a commitment to ensuring that law enforcement is held to the highest standard
rather than shielding officers from the repercussions of their actions
The Fairfax NAACP has long advocated for stronger foot pursuit policies that emphasize de-escalation and public safety
Law enforcement agencies across the country have adopted policies restricting foot chases unless there is an immediate threat to public safety
The organization urges Fairfax County to continue strengthening its policies to prevent future tragedies
The Fairfax NAACP remains committed to advocating for stronger foot pursuit restrictions
The organization will continue to push for systemic changes to ensure tragedies like the killing of Timothy McCree Johnson do not happen again."
WASHINGTON (7News) — Great news for athleisure lovers! This Saturday only, Athleta is hosting a legging trade in event at Athleta Tysons Corner
The convenience store chain 7-Eleven will be slightly less ubiquitous by the end of 2024
The store inside Tysons Corner Center closed permanently on Sept. 23, a mall spokesperson recently confirmed to FFXnow. More closures may be coming in the weeks ahead, as 7-Eleven plans to shutter 444 “underperforming” locations across North America
Multiple requests for comment to 7-Eleven didn’t receive a response by press time
so it’s unclear whether the Tysons store is counted among those closures
A full list of targeted stores hasn’t been released
During an Oct. 10 earnings call led by parent company Seven & I Holdings
7-Eleven president and CEO Joe DePinto cited inflation and increased costs of living as the main challenges facing the convenience store industry in the U.S
The closures will account for 3% of the chain’s over 13,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada, NPR and other media outlets reported
The former 7-Eleven at Tysons Corner Center won’t stay vacant for long: Istanbul Kitchen anticipates reopening in the first-floor space across from Gap by Nov
The Turkish restaurant, which arrived at the shopping center in 2021
closed its existing location next to Capital Musubi in the first-floor food court on Sept
“We’re so grateful for your continued support and can’t wait to welcome you to our new home!” Istanbul Kitchen said when announcing the relocation on its website
adding that customers can expect to see “your favorite dishes
just as you love them” and “a comfortable
Istanbul Kitchen’s relocation will make way for a brand-new tenant, Hey Tea, a chain of tea shops that began in Shenzhen
the company says it aims to revive “ancient tea with a cool twist” and now has over 4,000 stores globally
After opening its first U.S. store in New York City last December
along with ones in California and Washington
The Tysons Corner Center location appears to be the first one planned in the D.C
Signs for the upcoming cafe have been erected
blocking off Istanbul Kitchen’s old space
but a Hey Tea spokesperson says an opening date is still being decided
Store shufflings have become a common sight at Tysons Corner Center in recent months, particularly with Barnes & Noble, Old Navy and other stores moving away from the east end of the mall that’s now undergoing a renovation
The cosmetics company Lush and coffee machine maker Nespresso are slated to open new locations this fall
10,130-square-foot store today (Wednesday) with plans for a grand re-opening celebration at 5:30-8:30 p.m
“The store encourages shoppers to explore rooms with a curated selection of premium products that span clothing
and soft goods for home,” Banana Republic said in a press release
“The store will also offer a range of premier services designed to enhance the Banana Republic experience
personal styling and a private dressing room space.”
The grand opening will include a preview of the fashion brand’s new collection and “beverages and light bites,” according to a promotional poster
The mall is also gearing up for a holiday pop-up shop from Creative Collective that will open Oct
The Cheesecake Factory is getting ready for its big move across Route 123
The chain will close its existing location at Tysons Galleria at the end of November before reopening at Tysons Corner Center on Dec
according to an announcement posted to its website
First reported by Northern Virginia Magazine, the impending closure will mark the end of a 21-year run at Tysons Galleria for the Cheesecake Factory, which opened its 13,300-square-foot space at the mall in 2003
At Tysons Corner Center, the Cheesecake Factory will occupy 11,435 square feet in Suite N013L on the first floor near Coastal Flats, according to Fairfax County permits. The space has been vacant since Gordon Biersch Brewery closed in 2020
It will eventually be joined in the east end by Maggiano’s, which is also relocating to the bigger mall after roughly three decades at Tysons Galleria
A Maggiano’s employee says the Italian restaurant will close its Galleria location in 2025
but the exact date is currently “unknown.”
The second floor of Tysons Corner Center’s east end is being taken over by the entertainment venue Level 99
which is slated to open next spring in spaces previously filled by Old Navy and Barnes & Noble
In addition to the preparations for the new tenants, Tysons Corner Center’s east end has been under construction since July 8 as part of a redevelopment that will add new flooring and ceiling treatments
updated lighting and a hanging art installation
The project is expected to be complete by March 2025

Tysons Corner Center is going all out for cherry blossom season this year
The mall announced last week that it will host four weeks of “diverse creative programming and themed events” from March 20 to April 13
“Known as the world’s most celebrated springtime event
the National Cherry Blossom Festival attracts over 1.5 million visitors to the DC region each year,” a release from Tysons Corner Center said
Tysons Corner Center will host a lively festival on the Plaza
featuring a variety of themed activities and attractions.”
The release said the festival will include cherry blossom-inspired merchandise and discounts, like Sakura Cherry Blossom bath accessories from LUSH and cherry blossom and bonsai tree LEGO sets
Tysons Corner Center will also host a “Blossom Bash” event on Sunday
Some new dining and shopping options are in development at Tysons Corner Center
Fried chicken connoisseurs may be interested to know that the D.C. region’s biggest mall will soon be home to a Popeyes. Temporary signage wrapped around the fast food restaurant’s future space in the first-floor food court notes that it’ll be open Sundays — perhaps a cheeky shot at its rival in the chicken sandwich wars of 2019
Popeyes is seeking to open a 1,005-square-foot eatery at 1961 Chain Bridge Road Mall
according to a commercial alteration permit currently under review by Fairfax County
The restaurant will be sandwiched between two fast-food Chinese restaurants: Panda Express and Chef Lin
The chain began life as Chicken on the Run, founded by Alvin Copeland Sr. as a single restaurant in Arabi, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans, in 1972, per the Popeyes website
the restaurant was renamed after Gene Hackman’s character in the movie “The French Connection” and pivoted to a Cajun-influenced chicken recipe
The company opened its first franchise in 1976 and now has more than 3,800 locations around the world
including about 19 locations in Fairfax County
The closest ones to Tysons are in Vienna and Merrifield
“crashing the wings party,” as the sign at Tysons Corner Center says
Also joining previously announced additions like Hobbs London, a clothing store that’s now open, and Yeti, which is still slated to open this fall, are Bora Bora Smoothie Cafe and Fashion Q
Bora Bora is moving into a first-floor kiosk near Macy’s
ice cream and acai bowls in addition to smoothies
Headquartered in Abu Fatira, Kuwait, Bora Bora started in 2019 out of a desire to create new juice blends that “keep pace with all segments of society and the seasons of the year,” according to the company website
While the chain is still primarily concentrated in the Middle East
The Tysons Corner Center venue will be the first in the D.C
Elsewhere in the mall, a “coming soon” sign indicates that Fashion Q, a women’s clothing retailer, will open in the first-floor space near Nordstorm that Paul Mitchell The School vacated in May
Like recent newcomer Primark
Fashion Q stresses its ability to provide trendy fashions at affordable prices
it buys most products wholesale and holds “vendors and factories we work with [to] the highest quality and ethical standards,” the company’s website says
Redevelopment of former Barnes and Noble wing underway
Meanwhile, Tysons Corner Center’s east end has emptied out to allow a major renovation
Construction began on July 8 and is expected to finish by March 2025
The overhaul led to La Sandia’s closure in June, but other tenants like Barnes & Noble, Old Navy and Shotted have relocated within the mall. Barnes & Noble has said its new, smaller store will likely open next spring or summer
In addition to making way for new retailers, including Maggiano’s, the Cheesecake Factory and Level 99
the redevelopment will upgrade the central common area with “new flooring and ceiling treatments
and a hanging art installation,” the mall says on its website
the escalators at the mall’s east end remain functional

2025 at 7:04 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D-Mount Vernon) speaks in support of Senate Bill 982 — which would allow a referendum that could build a casino in Tysons — in front of the Virginia Senate Gaming subcommittee on Monday
VA — Legislation that would pave the way for a casino to be built in Tysons was approved Monday by the Gaming Subcommittee of the Virginia Senate
Senate Bill 982 — which would give the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors the power to put a casino referendum on a ballot for residents to decide — passed on a 5-2 vote with Sen
The bill now moves back to the full General Laws & Technology Committee for consideration at its next scheduled meeting on Wednesday
Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D-Mount Vernon)
told subcommittee members that Virginia needed a “crown jewel” like Maryland’s MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino
transit-oriented entertainment district that would include not only a casino
but a state-of-the-art conference facility and performing arts venue is estimated to contribute an additional $140 million in annual revenue the county
in addition to over millions of dollars for the Commonwealth,” said Julie Coons
president and CEO of the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce
a development of this nature would diversify and broaden tax revenue for Fairfax County.”
When asked about the vocal opposition to the proposal
Surovell first dismissed opponents from the Reston area
saying they were miles from where the project would be built
He then acknowledged that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors had not requested the authority to add a casino referendum to the ballot
but the board has not taken an official position on the proposed casino
Patch first reported in September 2023 that Comstock Holding Companies wanted to build a casino somewhere in Fairfax County on Metro’s Silver Line outside the Capital Beltway
Marsden added language to the bill narrowing the location to Tysons
Related: Tysons Casino Tramples Neighborhoods, Ignores Residents: Opponents
only two supervisors — Walter Alcorn (D-Hunter Mill) and Jimmy Bierman (D-Dranesville) — have spoken publicly against the casino
which would not be built in either of their districts
who represents the location of the proposed entertainment district
which borders the Tysons district inside the Capital Beltway
The eastern boundary of Alcorn’s district ends at Route 7
which puts it across the street from where the gaming facility would be built
Claudia Arko, a lobbyist representing the board of supervisors, agreed the board has not taken an official position, but Chairman Jeff McKay (D) wrote a letter in January 2024 outlining the county’s concerns
“What you’ll see in the letter is our concern about the revenue split,” she said
“I understand that it’s the same revenue split for the other localities
but obviously when funding formulas are created for Fairfax County
the Commonwealth would receive over 70 percent of the gaming tax revenue generated by a Fairfax County casino," McKay's letter says
"This is especially relevant given the fact that the location outlined in the bill has the potential to generate significant local tax revenue without a casino."
Arko also addressed claims by Surovell that the Tysons casino project would address the county’s budget shortfall and generate funding to help alleviate that
“The real issue for our property tax and the fact that we’re having to increase it so much is that the state just doesn’t fund schools to the degree that they should for Fairfax,” she said
when you all give a 3 percent raise for teachers
you all pay about $20 million and we pay $80 million.”
president of the Northern Virginia Labor Federation
She was followed by a long line of union representatives
who each said their chapter supported the proposed project
Connie Hartke of the No Fairfax Casino Coalition was the first of a long line of Fairfax County residents to speak in opposition to the legislation. She asked the senators to delay passing SB982 until after House Bill 2498 is enacted
This bill would create the Virginia Gaming Commission to oversee and regulate all forms of legal gambling
“Any new gaming legislation such as the establishment of a casino in Tysons Corner should be put on hold until this agency is fully operational,” she said
“This will ensure the agency can properly evaluate and regulate new projects to align with its mission
This casino bill is designed to benefit private interests
not the Fairfax County community opposed to the bill.”

Halloween is still lurking around the corner
but Tysons Corner Center has a treat in store for anyone who wants to get a head start on their Christmas shopping lists
Returning to Tysons after a stint at Fair Oaks Mall in 2023, Creative Collective will open a pop-up holiday shop at the mall on Oct
occupying a currently vacant space on the first floor across from Camp through Dec
Creative Collective provides brick-and-mortar retail space for small
the company typically looks for brands “with distinct personalities or identities that sell products that one cannot generally find in chain stores,” owners Aurelou Cole and Wendy Whittleton told FFXnow
“We secure retail space in thriving areas,” they said by email
noting that the cost of commercial space and lack of exposure can be obstacles to getting a brick-and-mortar store for many small or up-and-coming businesses
“We curate the collection of small businesses so that the products on offer appeal
both in terms of the variety of items and the price range of the items
After testing its concept with a pop-up in Georgetown from August through December 2017, Creative Collective began regularly appearing at Tysons Corner Center with holiday shops in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. They switched to a virtual format in 2020
Tysons has also gotten Valentine’s Day and spring pop-up shops in recent years
According to Cole and Whittleton, the upcoming holiday pop-up will be similar to the one in 2022
customers can still expect to see a variety of products
ranging from jewelry and clothes to candles
businesses have sometimes offered customization options or hosted workshops
we have found that customers are excited and eager to support small
and women-owned businesses,” Cole and Whittleton said
the desire by customers to give handcrafted or one-of-a-kind items to loved ones is especially strong.”
Other changes to expect at Tysons Corner Center this fall include the opening of Yeti
and relocations for some existing retailers like Lush and Nespresso

enrolling in TSA PreCheck is one way to minimize time spent in security screening lines
AAA is working with TSA PreCheck enrollment provider IDEMIA to provide enrollment at its AAA Tysons Corner location
The TSA PreCheck event will be held from April 29 to May 2 at 8300 Old Courthouse Road
"With the busy summer travel season right around the corner
this TSA PreCheck enrollment opportunity couldn’t come at a better time for travelers hoping to avoid long airport lines
as they plan for travel this summer and beyond," said Ragina Ali
The Transportation Security Administration
which screens travelers at airport checkpoints
is expecting high travel volumes in the spring and summer season
TSA PreCheck allows pre-approved travelers to have an expedited process at security checkpoints
which means they don't have to remove shoes
PreCheck provides a five-year membership and is open to U.S
Children 12 and under can join an enrolled parent or guardian in TSA PreCheck without additional action
Children 13 to 17 can join enrolled adults when the child's name is on the reservation and the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the child's boarding pass
Appointments to enroll in TSA PreCheck at AAA are first come, first served. Travelers are urged to pre-register and schedule appointments ahead of their visit
travelers will provide fingerprints for a background check and should bring documents providing identity and citizenship status
If the name on the documents does not exactly match proof of identity
travelers should bring a court-ordered name change document
like a marriage certificate or divorce decree
passport can serve as proof of identity and citizenship
The cost of enrolling in TSA PreCheck is $78
company check or certified/cashier’s check
Travelers will receive their known traveler number for TSA PreCheck in three to five days after the appointment
The known traveler number must be added to flight reservations to join TSA PreCheck lines
Residents do not have to be an AAA member to attend the TSA PreCheck enrollment event
AAA travel experts on site can help applicants book travel
provide travel planning resources and offer luggage and travel accessories
This season also brings the deadline for adults to have REAL ID-compliant identification to board domestic flights on May 7, 2025. Other federally approved identification such as passports can be used at airport checkpoints instead of a REAL ID
TSA believes large numbers of travelers without a REAL ID or another accepted ID would result in longer lines and waits

which would have started the process to build a casino in Tysons
Agriculture & Natural Resources Subcommittee on Wednesday
VA — For the third straight legislative session
efforts to win passage of a bill that would start the process of building a casino in Fairfax County have failed
Members of the Commerce, Agriculture & Natural Resources Subcommittee in the Virginia General Assembly voted unanimously late Wednesday to pass by Senate Bill 982
so it will not proceed in the current legislative session
disagreed: "The bill can be brought back and passed through Tuesday."
has spent more than $1.5 million since 2023 in a bid to pass legislation allowing a casino to be built on Metro's Silver Line outside the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County
The project would include a 4 million-square-foot entertainment district in Tysons that would feature a high-end hotel with gaming floor
200,000 square feet of the district would be dedicated to a casino

who spoke in opposition to the casino bill on Wednesday
issued a statement after the subcommittee vote was taken:
"I was pleased that the House Appropriations Committee took the action to kill the casino proposal
There was absolutely no guarantee that labor protections would happen
There was not a legitimate independent study that provided analysis
forcing one specific location for a major land use with zero buy-in from the community doomed the project from the start
the most economically robust business climate in the Commonwealth and were carefully planned with community input," Boysko said
"A casino is not an appropriate land use there
My constituents have been contacting me to say how grateful they are that the bill has died."
president of the Tysons Stakeholders Alliance
“The voice of the people was finally heard today
Thank you to the Members of the Senate who voted no and to the House of Delegates for listening to the thousands of Fairfax County residents who expressed their opposition to the Tysons casino legislation
it would have not only wreaked havoc on our county and region
but it would have set a bad precedent in circumventing local authority and the will of the local community.”
released this statement: "This bill was not requested by the local government
unlike the five other casinos that were authorized
This bill is the product of a local developer who stands to benefit from the carefully crafted language of the bill that targets his holdings and possibly one other nearby site
the idea of a casino has been rejected by thousands of residents of the county
who believe that a casino does not comport with the long term plans for Tysons.”
After the Virginia Senate approved SB 982 on Feb. 4 on a 24 to 16 vote, the bill was referred on Friday to the General Laws Committee. However, Speaker Don Scott (D-Portsmouth) requested that the bill be rereferred to the House Appropriations Committee
the appropriations committee referred it to the Agriculture & Natural Resources Subcommittee
Bulova announced that this was the final time the subcommittee would meet this session
Wren Williams (R-Stuart) introduced nearly identical bills in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly seeking to give the board of supervisors the authority to put a casino referendum on a future ballot
The bills were quickly withdrawn following public backlash against the legislation
Marsden reintroduced the referendum legislation as Senate Bill 675 in January 2024
but the Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriations voted to hold it over to the 2025 session
The final version bill included language which narrowed the location of the proposed casino to Tysons
shepherding it through the Gaming Subcommittee and the General Laws & Technology and Appropriations Committees
Stella Pekarsky (D-Centreville) and Todd Pillion (R-Abington) served as the bill sponsors
“We need this kind of project in Fairfax County to bring tourists
to support our Metro and support our economy,” Surovell told the subcommittee
