A decidedly creepy but maybe ahead-of-the-curve business opened next to Macy's on Geary Street Thursday where a set of high-tech orb devices scan your iris and let you prove your own humanity The Apple-esque, spare storefront is from World, a venture launched six years ago by OpenAI cofounder Sam Altman and Alex Blania, and DeDe Wilsey offspring Trevor Traina is also involved with the mission of creating an anonymized blockchain-based identification system for people to use online The necessity of it is something we'll come to understand more and more Of course there's a crypto angle being played here too — the company was previously called Worldcoin — and maybe they're hoping to succeed where Facebook failed by launching a network where you can store both an anonymized ID and your cryptocurrency and maybe there's a messaging platform in there somewhere Anyway, it's all fairly shady and obscure for the moment, but at six storefronts around the country, World, or World Network (the former is what we knew them as when they were hunting for Mission Rock office space two months ago) will be marketing this idea of getting yourself scanned and setting yourself up on their network as a verified human There was a launch event for the company and the crypto coin at Fort Mason last night, as the Chronicle reports, which featured a pop-up kiosk with the scanning Orb Minis — the space at 281 Geary is just 5,000 square feet, next to Louis Vuitton. And Altman spoke about the idea for Tools for Humanity "Way before ChatGPT … we were both very interested in AI and what that was going to mean," Altman said "It was clear to us … that we needed some sort of way for identifying authenticating humans in the age of [artificial general intelligence] — we needed a way that we could know what content was made by a human or by AI We also talked a lot about the need to include a financial network of some sort.” World is partnering with Visa on a debit card that will be offered to World users this summer the company that owns Tinder and other dating apps And Blania told TechCrunch that the Orb Mini devices other World scanning outposts will be coming in Atlanta giving them access to the biometric data that the company had collected to date — so We'll have to wait and see if this catches on and has recently decided to lease a four-story 90,000-square-foot brick building at 600 Townsend East And this is another example of a company betting on Union Square so that is good news for Union Square — especially with the fate of Macy's still up in the air Previously: Sam Altman’s Other Startup Reportedly Looking to Lease 60,000 Square Feet In Mission Rock With the start of May comes the kickoff of street festival and fair season along with Bay to Breakers and plenty more fun to be had under the sun — when it decides to come out The woman who could have spared us the mess the country is currently in gave her first significant post-election speech on Wednesday in San Francisco and it was an I-told-you-so moment for sure Get the latest posts delivered right to your inbox Barmann is a fiction writer and web editor who's lived in San Francisco for 20+ years Get all the latest & greatest posts delivered straight to your inbox By CTU Communications | April 14, 2025 | _News File under: SEIU and dozens of other labor unions and community organizations — like Make The Road among others — are coming together to march protest and agitate to protect our country from the billionaire class and build campaigns to win transformation and investment for our public schools The march will begin at Union Park at 11 a.m it will be a historic opportunity to celebrate our diverse school communities and protect our democracy This year’s march is being organized by a nucleus of immigrant rights advocates and union leaders International Workers Day is celebrated all over the world and originates in Chicago where workers sacrificed their lives to win an eight-hour work day in 1886 the immigrant community turned out in record numbers when 400,000 people marched in Chicago on May 1 of that year and defeated the draconian Sesenbrenner bill that wanted to criminalize our undocumented neighbors We are in the midst of another remarkable moment of resistance when countless workers A number of schools already are planning field trips and members have submitted personal business days in order to attend the March This will be a wonderful event with colorful banners led by labor and immigrant rights leaders especially newcomers and children of immigrants will greatly benefit from seeing this level of advocacy and solidarity in this moment Learn more about the May Day event and RSVP to attend here We hope you can participate in this historic event Chicago Teachers Union affiliations include the Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL) the Illinois State Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (ISFL-CIO) the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) The Chicago Teachers Union is encouraging students to miss class to participate in political protests which include boycotts against McDonald’s and guacamole CTU is organizing a multi-day protest from May 1-5, starting with a march on May 1. The union is not only encouraging teachers to take personal days to attend protests but is actively promoting “field trips” during regular school hours The union is encouraging students to miss classes in a district in which fewer than 1-in-3 Chicago Public School students can read at grade level. The protest poster explicitly calls for boycotts of specific businesses CTU isn’t alone: the Illinois Federation of Teachers and other teachers unions are supporting the event This redirection of valuable classroom time comes at a critical moment for Chicago’s students Every school day matters for students who are already falling behind academically Rather than focusing on improving outcomes the CTU appears more interested in using students as political props While the union claims students will “greatly benefit from seeing this level of advocacy,” is calling for boycotts and labor stoppages more valuable than classroom instruction for struggling students Why is CTU qualified to judge employers that their students and communities need Cinco de Mayo would be better spent studying commemorate May Day Thousands gathered in Union Park Thursday morning before marching to Grant Park for a rally marking May Day the global holiday commemorating the labor rights movement with roots in Chicago history a third-year graduate worker at the University of Chicago was among the thousands holding signs and banners “Workers literally had to fight for their lives just for an eight-hour workday,” he said “So it’s crucial now more than ever for all of us to recognize that whatever rights we have aren’t given Yamaguchi is the president of Graduate Students United a union of graduate workers at the university who fought to have their first contract ratified last year The quantum science and engineering student and worker said the history of May Day was cause for reflection in the current moment on rights that may now be taken for granted and what could be lost if workers don’t fight as they had in the past “We see the current crackdown on higher education as a fight that needs the same kind of response,” Yamaguchi said “We need a united front across all disciplines across the university and across the whole city The struggles our international workers face on our campus are very interconnected with struggles across the city.” After kicking off the march from Union Park the group took up nearly a mile of West Washington Boulevard with rain occasionally drenching the thousands of poncho-adorned demonstrators many of whom covered their homemade signs in plastic wrap to combat the weather The Thursday demonstration was the latest in a series of protests from a broad coalition of groups focused on more singular issues, such as the “Hands Off” and 50501 demonstrations staged in the downtown area in recent weeks a northwest suburban resident who declined to give her last name said it was important for those who showed up to “be present,” no matter their background “This movement is for everyone in the United States,” she said “They start by targeting the weak people and the ones who can’t defend themselves and it doesn’t matter if you’re an immigrant or a citizen … The people out here are the last defense after the justice system.” was a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient before obtaining legal status and marrying a citizen white and blue ribbons in her hair and carrying a small American flag she said she didn’t want to cede ownership peaceful place but I don’t see it like that anymore,” said Anita Mokon “The president is telling us to go back home where does he expect us to go back home to?” moved to Skokie last year as she fled war back home Though she hasn’t struggled with her own asylum claim she said she was “disturbed” seeing what had happened to other asylum seekers she said seeing people in the streets chanting “Get up Chicago is a union town” helped her feel safe The march ended in Grant Park at the Petrillo Music Shell where a number of speakers took the stage while demonstrators filled in a cement and grass area most known for hosting Lollapalooza festival-goers in the summer Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the crowd amid a lineup of labor leaders said to a resounding “Yeah!” from the crowd health care and The union says 30 to 35 employees have come from other resorts around the country. According to Vail Daily that includes patrollers from the company’s flagship Colorado resort The union represents about 200 Park City patrollers and mountain safety staff only about 20 people were left in the mountain safety division That would mean just over 50 people are patrolling the largest resort in the United States Vail does not discuss staffing numbers, but it is hiring more. The day the strike began, Dec. 27, the resort posted temporary, part- and full-time safety and patrol positions online “We also have an obligation to our employees and to our guests to ensure that the resort remains staffed throughout the season and which is why we have job postings opening right now,” Park City Mountain Vice President and COO Deirdra Walsh said who runs a left-wing think tank and formerly worked at the NLRB doesn’t believe the job postings are illegal But if Park City Mountain hires more patrollers it’s unclear how it will balance workers’ hours once the strikers return “They need to be reinstated to the same or similar positions as before,” Bruenig told KPCW you run into an issue where you are essentially being retaliated against for engaging in protected activity in the form of having your hours reduced The union has alleged Vail already broke federal law in the ULPs it filed this month The union said the resort unfairly delayed the process of renegotiating the ski patrol contract that expired in April. Then it said Vail made coercive statements or actions and illegally polled the staff our managers were told by higher ups in the company that they had to call folks within ski patrol and mountain safety to see if they would be strike breakers or ‘scabs,’ if we were to go on strike,” Graves said the union announced it filed another ULP over an email Vail allegedly sent to striking employees threatening loss of housing Graves said Vail has deactivated the ski passes of union members and their dependent family members “We are confident that we've always bargained in good faith and we've complied with all labor laws,” Walsh said “And we've demonstrated great respect for our patrollers and [part] of that is respect the union's right to strike.” According to the NLRB’s database Vail has not filed an unfair labor practice charge against the union or any Park City employees as of Dec Bruenig said it can take more than a year before the NLRB rules on charges its regional office in Denver will review the alleged ULPs for “merit.” Bruenig estimates 90% of cases get settled at that point “Somewhere in the process of the first few months whenever it becomes clear that the region is going to take the position that this was an unfair labor practice the employer will settle the case and do what needs to be done to remedy the unfair labor practice,” he said The two parties are expected to resume mediation Monday afternoon and Tuesday to hammer out a contract There’s tentative agreement on education and training packages; what remains is wages The union wants patrollers’ base wages raised from $21 to $23 per hour to adjust for inflation The resort said patrol wage increases have outpaced inflation over the past four seasons Resort leaders and the union’s negotiating team were initially scheduled to convene for mediation on Thursday But on Monday Park City Mountain Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Deirdra Walsh said they were “pleased” to learn that the federal mediator had provided additional dates to meet Walsh said they plan to meet with union members for negotiations on Monday and Tuesday The last time resort leaders and the union were at the table was Dec The sides met for seven hours but failed to reach an agreement Union business manager Quinn Graves has pushed back on the resort’s claim that the union walked out of a prior mediation session before moving to strike She said the union is prepared to return to negotiations but we’ll report back once we know what happens there,” Graves said Walsh said the resort remains committed to reaching an agreement An estimated 200 patrollers and safety staff are participating in the strike which follows nine months of contract negotiations with Park City Mountain officials To date the sides have agreed on 24 of 27 contract terms but have been deadlocked over salary increases and benefits The union’s last contract expired in April It’s not clear how long the strike may last The union wants Park City Mountain owner Vail Resorts to raise the patrollers’ base wage from $21 to $23 per hour across all resorts to adjust for nationwide inflation The group also wants Vail to increase compensation for more experienced patrollers The union has also filed unfair labor practice complaints against Vail with the National Labor Relations Board over delays in negotiations Auburn officials cutting the ribbon to the newly renovated Auburn Park officials in Auburn held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the renovations to Union Park They are also adding extra security for park safety Work on the park was delayed due to the COVID pandemic Officials say they are about 85 percent done with crews working to finish renovating the park flagpole Playing an extremely tight set, hometown favorites Lifeguard delivered their fast paced garage rock in the style of Mission of Burma. With a vengeance the trio played their hearts out with a pace that would be jarring if it weren’t so catchy They also modestly thanked their fans pogoing up front saying playing Pitchfork was a dream come true for them It’s amazing a three piece can manage to sound so full and energized L’Rain serenaded the crowd with a sound that was soft and ambient but built up its emotional intensity The gentleness became increasingly captivating as their set evolved The dynamics between the guitar playing with pedal effects was especially interesting and the five piece also included keyboard parts and occasional saxaphone with some dreamy vocals mixed in Sultry with deep folk reveries, Kara Jackson continued some of the vibe that L’Rain previously brought with her own spin on it She has a way of playing that feels so intimate despite the festival setting and the violin accompaniment was also a treat Water From Your Eyes is unpredictable but intriguing There are times of sweet melodies and then abrasive rifts and you can’t quite be sure what you might hear next It’s too bad lead singer Rachel Brown wasn’t feeling well but they still played an engaging set (She said maybe it was karma for sneaking into Pitchfork Music Festival ten years ago.) The duo played as a four piece with another guitarist and drummer to fill out their sound as well which most definitely helped establish the presence of their intriguing songs Sometimes, there’s nothing in the world better than a perfect song. That’s what this reviewer kept thinking while listening to the super catchy punk rock of Sweeping Promises. The duo (performing with a drummer) played a spectacular set where every belted out lyric was heartfelt and every jump reminded you of the unbearable lightness of being Let’s also not also forget all the fun behind the talent and passion Sweeping Promises is always worth seeing so make sure to catch them in your city whenever possible the band also brought out the “next generation of Brats!” A Hanover park that was the site of fierce fighting during the Battle of Hanover in 1863 has a new name in honor of the heroism of the Union soldiers that pushed back Confederates and the "little stream that made a big difference." As part of an effort that began over seven years ago the Hanover Borough Council approved Resolution No which renamed the West Hanover Street Park to Union Park The effort was just another step in the many years of work by several local historians who over those seven years worked towards the addition of markers sharing the history of the park and made the case for the eventual name change The new name comes several months after the park received a complete overhaul of its playground area in 2024 which relocated the playground area within the park and provided brand new playground equipment The 'little stream that made a big difference'The resolution approved by the borough council recounts some of the events that took place during the Battle of Hanover known as the first battle of the civil war on free soil Stuart's cavalry first clashed with the rear guard of Union General H Judson Kilpatrick near the corner of Frederick Street and Westminster Avenue in part of Penn Township known as Pennville That began the "largest military altercation ever in York County," reads the resolution The 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry then retreated north past Hanover's center square soon ended that occupation through a counterattack against the Confederate troops in the streets of Hanover During this successful counterattack by the Union troops 25 to 30 Union cavalry chased Stuart himself through what is today the West Hanover Street Playground leapt across a tributary of the Plum Creek to escape which symbolized the end of the Confederate threat in Hanover was the subject of a well-known painting made over 100 years later by the late Hanover native Reuben Becker Jr. which hangs in the Guthrie Memorial Library in an account that was recalled on a sign board nearby: "The position soon became one of extreme personal peril for Stuart and landed safely on the other side with feet to spare." would win the first congressional medal of honor won on free soil Burke won the medal for capturing the flag of the Confederate's 13th Virginia Cavalry while additionally disarming and capturing two Confederate soldiers the medal of honor was not at the level of distinction that it is today as it was the only medal given at the time and was typically given to soldiers who captured the enemy's flag "A guy who comes back with the enemy's flag must have done something," Charisse noted Kilpatrick's Union troops reported 19 deaths were likely more than 20 killed and 150 wounded or missing Because of the outcome of the Battle of Hanover Stuart was diverted from his intended route through Hanover which added significant miles and hours to his movements forced Stuart to not reunite with General Robert E Lee until the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg which deprived Lee of his "eyes and ears" when they were most needed during that battle asserted that Hanover saved the fate of the nation," the resolution notes "Therefore in honor of the brave soldiers and citizens who risked their lives limbs and property to fight for and to preserve the Union in honor of the Union victory at the Battle of Hanover and the Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg in honor of all citizens who have stood for and worked for unity between all races and peoples and reflecting our unified belief in human rights and human dignity for all in the Hanover area and our nation the Council of the Borough of Hanover officially renames West Hanover Street Playground "Union Park." Hidden historyStanding near the site of where it is believed Stuart made that famous leap Krepps and Jackson spoke to the history tucked away by over 150 years of Hanover's growth The park is now one of the few open spaces left in the area that saw some of the fiercest fighting of the battle it gives me a better sense of the fighting," said Charisse "It's hard for people to imagine the open fields." with the edge of Hanover's development mostly ending near the house of Henry Winebrenner which still stands on the 200 block of Frederick Street Beyond the Winebrenner house was his business which sat in a field along Frederick Street at Forney Avenue where a strip mall and gas station now stand The Winebrenner house sustained damage during the opening volley of cannon fire of the battle which was believed to have come from a Confederate cannon position about 800 yards from the home were described as firing from high ground near the park at a location that Krepps believes would be within the grounds of Rest Haven Cemetery Charisse and Jackson noted their belief that Burke's actions took place in the vicinity of the cemetery were able to strike a building that is now nestled among the growth of downtown "This area was a melee," said Krepps of the present day playground "Whatever cohesion and unit order there was at the start of the battle broke down real quickly." "In any in any cavalry fight during the Civil War there's really two primary factors needed for its success "At the very beginning of the attacks closer to town the Confederates have momentum and cohesion." Charisse notes that the actions of the Union cavalry at the Battle of Hanover led to the creation of what is likely the most well-known monument of the battle "The Picket," an equestrian statue in Hanover's Center Square "The Picket" does not represent a specific individual who fought in the battle but instead all of the unnamed Union cavalrymen who fought in Hanover Part of what makes it so hard to pin down the exact locations of the battle is that the soldiers who fought here were rarely from here "When the guys that fought here would come back 20 or 30 years later they would have problems finding where they had been," said Krepps "They're only in the field in a hectic situation and in one spot for a few minutes," he notes and then they get to come back and try to put it all together." Many of the streets in the new growth of the area earned their names from the battle - such as Forney Avenue Even the tributary of Plum Creek that came to create so much symbolism is now mostly hidden away you might almost miss the historic little creek concealed in a small grassy space between two late 1900s rancher homes with one of the site's historic markers explaining its importance and referring to it as "the little stream that made a big difference." who has authored a book on the Battle of Hanover "A Strong and Sudden Onslaught: The Cavalry Action at Hanover Pennsylvania," the renaming of the park was a hopeful moment "Everybody knows it as the West Hanover Street playground," said Krepps "if even one kid comes here and knows it by the name Union Park somewhere down the line that kid may go home and ask their parents about the name they may learn of the historic events that took place there and that "there's something important here above just the fact that it's at the end of West Hanover Street." Krepps is hopeful that learning about what happened at the park may inspire children and their parents to learn more about the history of Hanover who helped champion the cause to the borough's parks and recreation board noted that while he was happy to do the legwork Charisse and Wallace that were truly responsible for making it happen Jackson also thanked local officials for their time and efforts parks and recreation director Matt Purkins and Dorothy Carol Felix "It's gratifying," said Jackson of seeing the name and markers be placed Jackson was also involved in the creation of the "Heart of Hanover" trail in 2021 as its editor which featured over 28 storyboards around the borough's historic locations Much of the text on those signboards were vetted by local historians that included Krepps Previously reported: Outdoor storyboards provide illustrated mini-history of Hanover area Jackson was involved in hosting the first annual "Heart of Hanover Days," which honors the anniversary of the historic battle the event was a two-day event on June 28 and 29 While they acknowledge that Hanover will never have the name recognition of Gettysburg the group hopes they can raise awareness and appreciation of the way Hanover influenced the outcome of the battle that followed it Harrison Jones is the Hanover reporter for The Evening Sun Broadway Off-Broadway Off-Off Broadway Cabaret Dance Opera Classical Music Nashville Minneapolis / St. Paul Connecticut Atlanta Chicago Los Angeles WEST END UK Regional Canada Australia / New Zealand Europe Asia Latin America Africa / Middle East TV/Movies Music Torch & Crown Beer Garden is just steps from the 14th Street-Union Square subway station Union Square Partnership and Torch & Crown Brewing Company, also known as “Manhattan’s Brewery,” is launching Torch & Crown Beer Garden It will be returning to Union Square Park on Thursday Torch & Crown Beer Garden will yet again bring locally brewed beers a delicious menu including pizza and fan favorites like the Lou Burger and pretzel In partnership with City Winery who is celebrating its Rose All Day season Live Music: Matthew Lee & The Standbys (@mattyandthestandbys) Sundays: Jazz with Geoff Burke (@burkesworks) Mondays: Trivia Night with NYC Trivia League Fridays: Music with Shawn Parsons (@alabamashawn) & Matthew Lee & The Standbys  (@mattyandthestandbys) Debuted in the popular Union Square Park Pavilion, the seasonal, open-air NYC Parks’ concession venue is Torch & Crown’s only offshoot outside of its SoHo brewery and restaurant. Privacy Policy News | Jan 4 Aspen ski patrollers came out in support of the Park City patrollers’ union Unfair Labor Practices strike which entered its seventh day on Friday.  The Aspen Professional Ski Patrol Association (APSPA) wrote an op-ed supporting the strike in The Aspen Times on Monday “We stand in solidarity with the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association (PCPSPA) and their recent strike against Vail Resorts’ unfair labor practices,” wrote the union board.  APSPA Union President Luke DeMuth said they support the strike as Park City’s parent company has refused to discuss increased pay and benefits for patrollers.  “They’re not even willing to discuss liveable wages for ski patrollers and tenured staff,” DeMuth said.  As the Aspen patroller’s union approaches its contract renegotiations with the Aspen Skiing Company this April he said they look to keep an amicable relationship The contract renegotiation takes place between the patrollers union and SkiCo representatives every two years has succeeded in negotiating fair and reasonable contracts with SkiCo “Neither APSPA nor SkiCo want to get into a situation like Park City,” he said.  Though DeMuth said he couldn’t reveal specifics he told The Aspen Times in December that they seek to increase patroller base pay Aspen Skiing Company CEO Geoff Buchheister told The Aspen Times in a statement that they expect to continue a collaborative relationship with the APSPA union in negotiations this spring productive relationship with our patrol union since 1986 Over ~40 years we have partnered together successfully through ~20 contract negotiations,” he wrote in an email our patrols have continually performed at the highest level and our entire community appreciates the professionalism and expertise they bring to the job and to our guests,” he added we realize our employees are the lifeblood and magic of our organization That is why we lead the industry in pay and benefits and will continue to do so.” Vail Resorts failed for months to enter negotiations with the Park City patrollers’ union to renegotiate pay and benefits The Park City patrollers’ union began an unfair labor practices strike on Dec Problems started last spring when the union tried to renegotiate with Vail Resorts after their contract expired in April After coming to various agreements with Vail Resorts the union proposed an economic and benefits package in September.  “We did not hear anything back from the company until almost the end of November “And they gave us a pretty terrible counter offer.” she said they made little progress coming to an agreement with the company.  the union decided to rally outside of the negotiation room to advocate for a fair contract “The company did not love that,” she said.  the union came to an agreement to strike after passing a unanimous vote among almost all of its 200 represented members They authorized the strike on the grounds of unfair labor practices under the National Labor Relations Act which included the company’s unwillingness to furnish information or present information about operations and metrics The company’s postponement of negotiations also constituted an unfair labor practice the union filed notice of additional unfair labor practices including intimidation against striking employees and retaliation against striking employees she said company management was told to call employees they thought might cross the picket line before the union initiated the strike which is seen as intimidation according to the National Labor Relations Act the Vail Resorts’ lawyers sent an email to the union The company turned off the striking employees’ passes as well as their dependents’ passes prohibiting access to ski school for patroller’s children “They have threatened to take away our health insurance if this strike is to last for more than two pay periods,” she said.  They have also threatened to evict people from employee housing and to bar patrollers from taking their children to the company’s day care president of Vail Resorts’ Mountain Division was quoted in a Park City media statement Friday.  “While we had sincerely hoped the union would not take this drastic and unnecessary action during the holidays we have plans in place to continue to safely operate Park City Mountain for our guests and the community,” Rock said.  “We deeply regret that this is having any level of impact on the guest experience and are grateful to our thousands of employees who are working hard every day to enable the experience at Park City Mountain and open the terrain that we can safely open,” he added.  Graves said they are asking for basic steps forward The union wants a minimum wage raise for patrollers from $21 to $23 and wants their seasonal employees to qualify for paid parental leave many patrollers don’t work enough annual hours to qualify And they want to decompress the patroller pay scale Some patrollers who have 20 years of experience make the same as those who have five “People should be compensated for their time and expertise,” she said Vail Resorts CEO Kirsten Lynch made $6.3 million in total compensation last year according to Salary.com “We think some of that money can be redistributed to the people with boots on the ground Skyler Stark-Ragsdale can be reached at 970-429-9152 or email him at the hospital Sunday a day after being shot during an attempted robbery in the city’s Union Square Pearsall’s mother said Sunday in a social media post that the bullet that struck her son in the chest exited out his back and missed his vital organs was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where authorities said he was stable and being treated for his injuries whom police described as a 17-year-old male from Tracy a city about 70 miles east of San Francisco was quickly apprehended near the scene and taken into custody The suspect is also stable and being treated at San Francisco General “San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was the victim of an attempted robbery and shooting this afternoon,” team officials posted on social media Saturday evening “He sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.” San Francisco police issued a statement saying officers responded to a shooting at approximately 3:37 p.m near Geary Street and Grant Avenue in the Union Square district known for its boutique shopping and high-end hotels and restaurants officers located two male subjects suffering from injuries Officers rendered aid and medics transported both subjects to a local hospital for further medical evaluation,” the statement said said police told him that the assailant tried to rob Pearsall of his Rolex watch San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said Pearsall was walking alone when an assailant confronted him and attempted an armed robbery and the attacker’s gun fired multiple times and both Pearsall and the assailant were shot Scott said the investigation is ongoing but that the suspect appears to have acted alone nor would he confirm that Pearsall’s Rolex was the target of the attempted robbery Brooke Jenkins said her office expects to make a charging decision by the middle of next week The shooting is expected to fuel a narrative that conservative pundits and politicians have hammered in recent years painting San Francisco as a city overrun with crime and homelessness that they blame on the failure of Democratic leadership Some San Francisco neighborhoods have struggled in recent years with sprawling homeless encampments accompanied by trash and open drug use And downtown vacancy rates spawned by the pandemic remain stubbornly high Mayor London Breed, who is in the midst of a tough reelection bid, has launched high-profile initiatives against retail theft and homeless encampments over the last year Breed said the shooting was a “setback” for the city and efforts to crack down on crime the quick response from police and other first responders should send a message “This is how we hold people accountable in San Francisco,” Breed said “Robberies and any violence like this will not be tolerated in our city.” who is challenging Breed in the November mayoral race called Saturday’s shooting “terrifying,” but also stressed it was “very “Gun violence in San Francisco is at an all-time low,” Peskin said “And police presence in and around Union Square is at an all-time high.” Pearsall, who played for Arizona State and the University of Florida in college, was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft He was sidelined with a shoulder
