CT (WFSB) - More than 3,000 Pratt & Whitney employees voted to go on strike after unresolved issues in contract negotiations with the aerospace manufacturer
A union official said the plan was to go on strike at 12:01 a.m
on Monday after members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) took completed Sunday’s vote at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford
77% of the union workers voted yes to the strike
3,100 workers are on strike out of the 11,000 Pratt and Whitney employees in Connecticut
The machinists say they were offered a contract with an 18% pay increase over three years
but that it also weakened their retirement benefits and increased healthcare costs
“There’s no mention in the contract of job security at all,” said Thomas Devanney
The striking workers said they were responsible for building
and testing aircraft engines for both commercial and military planes at Pratt & Whitney’s East Hartford and Middletown facilities
There is concern that whoever is now designing
manufacturing and inspecting world class engines won’t be able to do that same great job these workers have done for decades
workers gathered outside company headquarters in East Hartford and outside its facility in Middletown on Monday to take part in the strike
“The company fell short on every area they needed to hit on for these people,” said Sarah Borowy
Sarah has worked at Pratt & Whitney for 46 years
Her son Nathan also works for the company as an inspector
“We’re middle class workers trying to raise our families
we’re proud taxpayers in the state of Connecticut,” said Wayne McCarthy
“We just need our wages to keep up with inflation so that this generation has a chance to live the American dream
Many huddled under tents as they voiced concerns about job security
“We’re all on the same team,” said Nathan Drake
“We all want to get us back to work to make world class engines
if it takes a week to do that or two weeks to do that
I’m too ready to wait as long as it takes to get on the same page.”
“Our committee worked tirelessly to advance our member’s voices to the company
and the company simply failed to bring to the table an agreement that we felt comfortable recommending to our membership
The company’s offer reportedly included an 18.6 percent wage increase over three years
but union leaders said it failed to address other key concerns
including potential cuts to retirement benefits and increased healthcare costs
“We will be down in front of Pratt and Whitney letting them know what we want and why we’re there and waiting until the negotiating committee can get back to the table with the company and make a better deal for us,” said Michael Lamoureaux
“If they don’t want to address our concerns we’ll be here as long as it takes
They’ll get the message pretty quickly and hopefully they’ll do right by us
and come back to the table,” McCarthy said
Eyewitness News obtained a statement from Pratt & Whitney in which the company defended its offer:
“Pratt & Whitney’s offer competitively compensates our workforce while ensuring P&W can grow in an increasingly competitive marketplace
creating ongoing economic opportunity in the state of Connecticut
Our message to union leaders throughout this thoughtful process has been simple: higher pay
Our local workforce is among the highest compensated in the region and the industry – our offer built on that foundation
We have no immediate plans to resume negotiations at this time and we have contingency plans in place to maintain operations and to meet our customer commitments.”
The strike was expected to significantly impact production operations at both the East Hartford and Middletown plants
East Hartford police were expected to increase patrols around the area to manage traffic and ensure safety near picket lines
The plan is to have someone outside Pratt plants In East Hartford and in Middletown 24/7 until a deal is done
We’re ready to get back to the table,” McCarthy said
Monday’s strike was not the first labor action at Pratt & Whitney
Workers previously went on strike in 1985 and 2001 over similar contract disputes
Several political leaders weighed in on the strike
“I stand with Machinists in fighting for basic workplace fairness— decent
Workers need long term certainty in jobs and income to make the American dream real
Our state’s prosperity and progress depends on proper
especially at Pratt where their products are critical to our national defense.”
“Pratt and Whitney is a world leader in manufacturing aircraft engines because of their amazing workers
who are critical to the success of our nation’s manufacturing future
We strongly encourage the company’s leadership and the machinists union to come together to reach a fair deal that is negotiated in good faith,” said Gov
Governor Susan Bysiewicz in a joint statement

— About 3,000 labor union members went on strike early Monday at jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut
retirement benefits and job security broke down
Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers were picketing at manufacturing locations in East Hartford and Middletown
after about 77% of nearly 2,100 union members voted to approve their first strike since 2001
“Pratt and Whitney is a powerhouse in military and commercial aerospace products because our membership makes it so,” David Sullivan
the union's eastern territory vice president
”This offer does not address the membership concerns
and the membership made their decision — we will continue to fight for a fair contract.”
Picketing workers lined and crossed streets near the entrances to the East Hartford and Middletown plants on a rainy Monday morning
against Pratt & Whitney,” while some read “Solidarity for Security” and “Together We Rise.”
Some workers said they were concerned that the company may move jobs and manufacturing out of the state to its plants in Georgia
We need time to be here,” union member Scott Westberg told WFSB-TV
They’re trying to deteriorate the middle class
called its latest wage and retirement proposal competitive
and said its workforce is among the most highly compensated in the region and industry
“Our message to union leaders throughout this thoughtful process has been simple: higher pay
more days off and more flexibility,” the company said in a statement
"We have no immediate plans to resume negotiations at this time and we have contingency plans in place to maintain operations and to meet our customer commitments.”
The strike comes as RTX faces a potential $850 million hit on profits this year because of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump
if the tariff rates remain the same through the year
During its first-quarter earnings call on April 22
the company said its Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace subsidiaries would each shoulder just over $400 million of the potential tariffs hit
RTX is predicting $83 billion to $84 billion in adjusted sales companywide in 2025
The company's first-quarter earnings were $1.5 billion
Pratt & Whitney's adjusted operating profit in the quarter was $590 million
The company said its latest contract proposal included an immediate 4% wage increase
followed by a 3.5% increase in 2026 and a 3% increase in 2027
It also included a $5,000 contract ratification bonus and enhanced pension and 401k plan benefits

Nearly all of the unionized employees at two federal facilities dedicated to workplace safety research in Cincinnati are on immediate administrative leave and will be terminated
The cuts represent a significant portion of the facilities' workforce
"It's about 93 percent of NIOSH [nationally] and about 97 percent of the Cincinnati bargaining unit," she said
"So it's effectively shutting down the agency."
NIOSH has two offices in Cincinnati — Pleasant Ridge's Alice Hamilton Laboratory for Occupational Safety and Health
Taft Occupational Safety and Health Laboratory
About 400 employees in total are roughly equally distributed between the two
NIOSH is responsible for research and recommendations aimed at preventing workplace illness and injury
Union steward Hannah Echt told WVXU in April the Cincinnati offices have a variety of workers
"We evaluate if hazards exist in a workplace and recommend ways to reduce hazards," she said
administrative staff who support our research and our projects."
Other workers at NIOSH in management positions will be terminated June 2
They were put on administrative leave April 1
That's when some unionized employees were first notified their jobs were in jeopardy
leading to protests at Cincinnati's NIOSH facilities
The Trump administration has said widespread job cuts are necessary in the federal workforce to save taxpayer funds and to make the federal government more efficient. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency offices in Cincinnati have already seen some of those cuts.
The cuts to NIOSH are part of larger restructuring under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F
who has indicated the department will cut roughly 20,000 of its 82,000 employees and consolidate its 28 departments to 15
Leaders with HHS have pledged that the worker safety initiatives NIOSH carries out will continue under a new department called the Administration for a Healthy America even after the workforce reductions
But Niemeier-Walsh and other union leaders dispute this
"If you go to the NIOSH website and you look at some of our services

The Philadelphia Union won its third consecutive match with a 2-1 victory against CF Montréal at Stade Saputo on Saturday night
The win marked the first time since September 2020 that the Union earned a road victory in Montréal
Midfielder Indiana Vassilev put Philadelphia on the board first with his first Union goal in the second minute of the match
CF Montréal found a late first half equalizer off a goal from Giacomo Vrioni
forward Mikael Uhre scored his second goal of the season to secure the Union’s 2-1 victory on the road
The Union will return to Subaru Park to host Indy Eleven in the Lamar Hunt U.S
CF Montréal: Jonathan Sirois; Tom Pearce (Kwadwo Opoku 83’)
Joel Waterman; Fabian Herbers ( Luca Petrasso 57’)
Dante Sealy; Giacomo Vrioni (Caden Clark 57’)
Philadelphia is on a three-game win streak for the second time this season
Tonight’s victory moves the Union into second place in the Eastern Conference
The win also marked the Union’s first road victory in Montréal since 2020
Midfielder Indiana Vassilev scored his first goal for the Union
Forward Chris Donovan earned his first start of the 2025 season
The start gave Donovan his 50th career MLS appearance
Forward Mikael Uhre scored his second goal of the season tonight to tie Julián Carranza for the fifth-most MLS goals (34) in club history
Midfielder Danley Jean Jacques tallied an assist tonight to contribute a goal or an assist in three consecutive games
The Union struck early through a sweet strike off the boot of Indiana Vassilev
Time will tell if he can truly fill the shoes of Daniel Gazdag
but tonight’s goal got the Union off the mark in a major way
Brilliant timing for his first goal of the season
Montréal took control after the Vassilev goal in the 2nd minute and maintained that momentum until the Mikkel Uhre goal in the 84th minute
The Union managed to hang on thanks to a few saves by Andre Blake that he did not know much about
A strong start and a strong finish was all that was needed tonight against an underwhelming Montréal side that struggled to find clinical finishing
but it was the two deep lying playmakers that ran the midfield tonight
Danley Jean Jacques was the catalyst for the first goal while Jovan Lukic stepped in front of a misplaced place and slipped Uhre through on goal for the winner
The Union got exposed at times on the wings
but the two in the middle held it down and created the offense when needed
On a side note …this year the Union are undefeated when Blake and Wagner both played
This was by far the worst looking game they played this year
Uhre steals a win for the team and let’s get out of Montreal
It’s hard to watch Montreal and understand how they haven’t won a game this year as they fought for 90 minutes
Blake with some big saves tonight but it sure seemed like he was just lucky a few times
A third of the way through the season and you get the feeling this team can still play a lot better coming down the stretch
I scratched my head at the lineup but I’ll give the coach credit of rotating players and getting ready for a compact schedule coming up with U.S
But it was surely one of their worst-looking matches of the season
I don’t see this system working against better teams
Completed more passes by heading to each other
We just need to be better than the 8 teams worse than us during the regular season and be fresh at the end
This game was simply proof of the old adage: winning teams win the games that they are supposed to win
Top of the table teams should continue to hold bottom of the table teams in the bottom of the table
they were as unlucky as the Union was lucky
They looked like the second goal by the Union was almost expected
Their faces after that goal was scored showed resignation
here we go again.” Playing deep and in a counterattack plan
makes for unattractive play but leads to beautiful series
we fans might have said that a road point was acceptable; yesterday’s game showed that this team is capable of finishing the job on teams that have little confidence
however poor the middle of the game may have looked
+1 — And that series leading to the first goal really was beautiful
To so visibly show the world his lack of confidence
and then to just hold it until the U were able to take it back
If Cavan had gotten the ball where Nate ended his run with the dive
there would have at least been a shot if not a Doop
You can argue that the “real” midfielders may not of intercepted the ball but one can hope that we don’t see more of the Harriel at AM unless there are availability issues
Don’t care how bad a team is: you win on the road in MLS
Donovan had like a hundred bad bad bad giveaways
He was played into a chance and sent it back towards the passer
The shades of despair post 3 wins in a row feel almost mitochondrial
It’s been great to see DJJ grow in confidence
The two goals were incisive and showed what this team can do with just glimmers of daylight
He and Lukic both make me miss Brujo less- and that one’s still personal
My daughter’s formative moments as a fan were bringing drawings to leave for him at the customer service office
and she (age 9) is lobbying for us to go thousands of miles to see Corinthians sometime
There was something about the fluidity of Montreal’s play and passing for long stretches that it would be nice to see the Union pull off more consistently
My eye craves some of those Medunjanin/McGlynn type passes… and it feels ugly… then that Lukic through ball to Uhre just when one thought
There was also something nice about the improvisational firefighting defense
Did Glesnes really boot it over his goal from close range on purpose
They have this find-ways-to-win thing going that feels like it… won’t be a boring season
I refuse to be depressed by this team this year (eyes the open cup warily)
I like that they are winning the games that they should.
A team at the bottom of the conference should get beat by a team at or near the top
Yes the beautiful game was nearly completely missing from this game
If they beat Columbus this weekend and it’s 2-1 and it’s ugly
and it’s hard to be mad when your team wins… at least it should be
never take three points on the road for granted
Just like many others already said in this thread
the Union had no idea what to do with the ball
Thank goodness Montreal is so toothless inside their attacking box
How was their #9 ever signed to a major league team
I’d like to mark that guy as he doesn’t move much and never seems to even try to beat the center back to the space to make the play
Montreal has a mid level MLS level starter at defensive center mid in Piette
They didn’t have any difference makers going forward at all
they were coached to go over the top of the predictable press
The Union started to fall back to prevent getting chipped
then their press started to fall apart and Montreal broke it at will
It’s lucky that they had no shooters and their in-the-box forward is slow and predictable
I hate to be negative after a road win but I’m still concerned about the Union’s game plan getting figured out and them getting injured down the stretch
just like what happened with Coach Carnell at St
I also am biased as I don’t like that one dimensional pressing style
When I first saw it in my rec league days
I was an older player in a high division as a center back so everyone was younger
I never saw it before so I kind of panicked for the first couple of games
I figured it out… just chip the ball past the pressure up to the forward
they do a quick pass back to an attacking center mid or outside mid
then send a runner down the flank into all that space that’s vacant because the press sends the outside backs forward leaving it open
as well as what Union teams under Coach Curtain did all the time
That is the fundamental risk/reward profile of the high midfield press
It’s supposed to play psychological games by going against everything players are coached to do and incentivize things that have been coached out of them
players are coached to keep possession and distribute to their mids rather than trying to send the ball long speculatively
That’s because under a traditional possession-based 4-4-2
that’s how to best play against it as they’ll cede the space in the midfield in exchange for making it hard to get from the middle third to the final third
Same with keeping possession… you want possession against a possession oriented team that counters out of its own third
The high midfield press turns this on its head where you don’t want possession against Carnell’s system because it’s built on turning it over and countering from the middle third
This is at a cost of leaving the defensive third open
Hence why an opponent wants to cede possession and play over the top quickly
They put our CBs under pressure by playing the ball forward quickly
Surridge or mukhtar would pull either glesnes or Makhanya out of position by dropping in underneath
Part of it is because our “6’s” are not really playing as true 6’s
They are both box to box midfielders who can get caught out of position when transition is turned quickly against us
it can be catastrophic with how high our line is set in the mid block
Without a ball winning 6 sitting in front of our defense consistently
and teams are taking advantage of it by targeting them directly in transition
It’s definitely something that needs to be cleaned up
I’m just not sure how you do it without sacrificing compact shape
Blake you’re right that our 6s are not playing as true 6s… but the reason for that is that our 10s are not playing as true 10s
Carnell’s system tries to account for the lack of width in the usual 4-2-2-2 box formation by sending the attacking midfielders out wide
is really more like a hexagon with a hole in the middle
That hole in the middle gets filled variously by any of the front 6
and it requires that Danley and Lukic have a good understanding of who’s staying back and who’s pushing up
But mostly they do a very good job of this
+ 1 BETTER TEAMS WILL FIGURE THIS OUT 2ND TIME AROUND
You have described exactly how Union II play — and try to play — when Korzeniowski or Anderson are on the pitch
Here is an example of how to beat a press:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zatSVXbXpM0&pp=ygUZRGMgdW5pdGVkIHZzIGF0bGFudGEgMjAxOA%3D%3D
That was a very talented possession team just pounding one of the best pressing teams the league has ever seen
that United team had some real stars on it include Wayne Rooney
and Luciano Acosta but that Atlanta team won MLS Cup that year
I worry about the Union’s back line being so exposed

He has never been to Canada but he loves the country
it’s a dream of freedom and a better America,” Joachim Streit
“A dream of emigrants which many others have lived out.”
What first seemed a political prank has become a semi-serious debate
as US President Donald Trump has taunted and provoked Canadians with talk of converting Canada into the 51st state
Canada’s new prime minister Mark Carney broke with tradition by visiting Europe rather than Washington for his first foreign trip as his country’s leader
Carney told his hosts in Paris that Canada is “the most European of non-European countries”
alluding to his country’s French and British roots
Some in Brussels felt encouraged to push for more
Emboldened by the publication in late February of polls suggesting that a stunning 46% of Canadians would support Canada joining the EU
Streit took the issue to the European Commission again
Brussels had already felt compelled to react to intense chatter on social media advocating EU membership following ongoing hostile rhetoric from Trump
In a March briefing, a Commission spokeswoman pointed to Article 49 of the Treaty of the European Union which stipulates that “any European State… may apply to become a member” – in other words: ONLY European states
In a parliamentary question to the bloc’s executive body a few days later
Streit underlined the lasting advantages of Canadian membership for the EU
facilitate the exchange of goods and services
and be better able to withstand threats of tariffs and global security risks.”
Would the Commission propose a legal revision of Article 49 to allow Canadian membership
The term “European state” could be legally flexible
there is the EU member Cyprus which is technically a west Asian state
And there are French and Dutch territories in the Caribbean
Spanish and Portuguese islands in the Atlantic and Greenland
an autonomous region in the Kingdom of Denmark – all (currently) part of the European Union
Greenland and Canada even share a land border between Ellesmere Island and Greenland’s north westernmost tip in winter when solidly frozen sea ice creates a land bridge
Canadian military has reportedly turned back Inuit who wandered across the Robeson Channel
on foot into Canadian territory in the past
Thus, Streit sees Canada and the EU as existing neighbours and partners and feels that more needs to be done. “Sometimes in history, doors open and then shut again. And sometimes, the doors are open only for a brief moment”, Streit said in a committee hearing in the European Parliament in early April
Streit wrote a letter to two EU Commissioners
in charge of social rights and research respectively
urging them “to set up a framework of academic and professional exchange” between Canada and the EU
“This would allow EU officials to get more familiar with the particularities of Canada
it would allow Canadian officials to also learn EU policy-making with the EU institutions”
Streit wrote in the letter seen by Euronews
He calls it a “political Erasmus” framework
Such an initiative could be a stepping stone to Canada’s EU membership
at least a close relationship like with Switzerland or Norway
we are people of the same ilk with the same set of values
DENVER - Today, Governor Polis and Union Pacific Railroad President Beth Whited, celebrated the signing of a historic lease agreement for Colorado’s Moffat Tunnel, replacing the original 1926 lease. This new agreement follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed on November 1, 2024
a 25 year access agreement for Mountain Passenger Rail
and finalizing the purchase and sale of the Burnham lead line which will unlock transit-oriented development potential for the Burnham Yard property
This public-private partnership assures continued freight operations through the Moffat Tunnel for 25 years with established passenger rail access from Denver through the Moffat Tunnel to Winter Park
Steamboat Springs and Craig for soon-to-be Mountain Passenger Rail Service
bringing new transportation options and economic opportunities to Colorado communities
These three agreements demonstrate a new model of collaboration that can support the state’s needs for moving goods and commerce and giving Coloradans more transportation options.
“This agreement begins a new era of partnership between the State of Colorado and Union Pacific that will expand passenger rail into our beautiful Rocky Mountains
assure continued freight movement through the Continental Divide
a very special state property with unparalleled transit-oriented development potential
Moffat Tunnel represents an important part of Colorado’s history
we are showing the country a new model for pursuing passenger rail through collaboration with the railroad
I am thrilled with the three new agreements and look forward to seeing the positive benefits to our state,” said Governor Jared Polis.
“Mountain rail Service will soon run year-round from Denver Union Station to Winter Park
a corridor renowned for its scenery and beauty,” continued Governor Polis.
Mountain Rail Service Pattern Map showing the route from Denver to Craig.
“Union Pacific is proud of the hard work and spirit of collaboration that went into this agreement with the State of Colorado
We came together as true partners and the result is an agreement that benefits the citizens of Colorado and the businesses and people who rely upon Union Pacific to deliver the goods and material vital to today’s economy,” said Union Pacific President Beth Whited.
“It was an honor to help lead the Colorado negotiation team on this unique partnership that will benefit the state of Colorado for the next 25 years
When this daily train service begins connecting Denver to Winter Park
and on to Craig it will undoubtedly be one of the most beautiful train rides in the country if not the world and provide a safe
affordable alternative to being stuck in traffic
I am thrilled we were able to purchase the Burnham Lead line
This purchase unlocks safe passage into the Burnham Yard property
the original rail yard of Colorado that predates statehood and one of the last undeveloped parcels in Denver
and the purchase of the Burnham lead line are a win
I want to thank the Union Pacific team for their efforts and creative problem solving that made these agreements possible,” said Lisa Kaufmann
Senior Strategic Advisor for Governor Polis.
“Today’s agreement will offer residents and visitors throughout Colorado new opportunities and choices to get where they’re going
More passenger rail trips between the Front Range and mountain communities in Winter Park
and beyond will offer an option in addition to the drive over Berthoud Pass
The purchase of the Burnham lead line will also improve local mobility surrounding Lincoln Park in Denver
ensuring this historic neighborhood can continue to offer residents safe access to all the surrounding amenities,” said CDOT Chief of Staff Sally Chafee.
The 25-year access agreement establishes Colorado’s license for three daily roundtrips or up to 506,000 train miles annually for Mountain Passenger Rail
as the payment from Union Pacific for their use of the Moffat Tunnel for 25 years
The state plans to start a daily roundtrip year-round to Granby by 2026 and flexibility for the state to expand service in future phases to connect Denver to Winter Park Resorts
Future phases will commence after a procurement process for a designated contract operator and upon needed capital improvements completed that are identified in the access agreement
highlighted by traveling under the continental divide through the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel
the highest operating railroad tunnel in the United States
The Moffat Tunnel has been one of the first and most successful public private partnerships in Colorado’s history
where 6 counties and private investors came together over a 100 years ago to build the Moffat Tunnel to ensure Denver as the commerce hub of the Rocky Mountain West
after Union Pacific the first transcontinental railroad bypassed Colorado and routed through Wyoming instead
For 99 years Union Pacific or their predecessors have held a lease that expired on May 1
6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel cuts through the Continental Divide at 9,239 feet above sea level
Created to provide an important east-to-west connection from Denver to the West coast for commerce
the Moffat Tunnel helped Denver become a center of commerce and growth in the Rockies.
Demand for rail transportation in Colorado is significant
In partnership with Amtrak and Winter Park Resorts
the state made investments to lower the cost and increase the frequency of the Winter Park Ski train
Coloradans and visitors booked more than 44,000 trips on the Ski train compared to 17,500 last season – a 153% increase

The 2025 MLS season is now firmly underway
which means it's time for ESPN's Power Rankings
Our writers studied the action from across Matchday 11 to come up with this week's order of all 30 teams in the league
Playing at an absurd 80-point pace (currently on 26 points), the Caps aren't slowing down for anybody right now. Even with Jesper Sørensen swapping five starters following Wednesday's win over Miami that booked the Canadian side a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup final
In desperate need of getting the taste of failure out of their mouths after bowing out of the Concacaf Champions Cup
Miami put four past the Red Bulls in a 4-1 home victory
Javier Mascherano used a lineup with four pure attackers
The Union are doing what good teams do: beating bad teams
A 2-1 win over Montreal on Saturday served as the team's third-straight victory
Topping the Canadian side isn't anything to brag about
After their 2-1 win over CF Montréal, the Philadelphia Union are now three unbeaten and two points behind the Columbus Crew for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. (Photo by Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images)5. Seattle SoundersPrevious ranking: 10
Seattle's mixture of depth and top-end talent is starting to show itself in a way that should terrify the rest of MLS
With ambitions to top the East, Charlotte's battle with Columbus on Saturday was always going to serve as a measuring stick for their contender status. Losing 4-2, albeit without star playmaker Pep Biel
puts a damper on any trophy conversations in North Carolina right now
Still without star center-back Walker Zimmerman -- due to a head injury -- Nashville travelled to face Atlanta to kick off the weekend and picked up a 1-1 draw for their efforts
The game lacked the fireworks of NSC's huge win over Chicago the week before
Callaghan's team still put in a perfectly fine road performance
Cincinnati had been flirting with fine margins for the entire year prior to their 1-0 road loss to NYCFC
With just one multi-goal win on the season
FCC have struggled to put teams to the sword
Their attacking play remains a work in progress
It's hard to snap a three-game losing streak more emphatically than with a 5-0 win. San Diego took down Dallas with that scoreline on Saturday, showing some of the finer points of their smooth attacking play that flows from Anders Dreyer
play0:26Hirving Lozano scores goal for San Diego FCHirving Lozano scores goal for San Diego FC
After Brad Stuver's between-the-legs howler got the Loons on the board, Minnesota never looked back in their 3-0 road win over Austin. Most notably, Julian Gressel debuted for Eric Ramsay's team in the second half after signing last week
LAFC's 2-0 win over Houston was a truly dominant showing at both ends. The attack registered 2.0 xG, according to FBref
good for their third-best single-game total of the season
only allowed four shots while putting the clamps down on the Dynamo
Phil Neville's team had scored three goals or more in three straight games
they allowed four in a 4-1 road loss at the hands of the Earthquakes
It's fair to be worried about the Timbers' defensive execution at this point in the year
Despite playing up a man for more than half the game after a red card to Fire goalkeeper Chris Brady
Orlando couldn't get on the board in Chicago
The 0-0 draw was the Lions' fourth scoreless draw in their past five games
After starting the season red hot in the attack
Despite taking a 1-0 lead just before halftime
the Rapids shipped two goals in stoppage time during the first half
Chris Armas' team simply didn't create enough chances to pick up a result
Austin didn't allow Minnesota many clear-cut chances
but they still managed to lose 3-0 in front of their home fans
while uninspired attacking play continued from Nico Estevez's team
Caleb Porter's 3-4-1-2 setup continued to look like the perfect fit for New England's personnel in a 2-0 win over Toronto
It's hard to imagine a more bland version of the Red Bulls than the one that's taken the field this year
No longer a hyper-aggressive pressing outfit and lacking dynamism in the attack thanks to their two over-30 DPs
Maybe New York City should just play Cincinnati every weekend? Between last year's win over Cincy in the first round of the playoffs and Sunday's 1-0 home win, the Pigeons certainly seem to have the number of their Eastern Conference foes. Losing Keaton Parks to a first-half injury stings
play0:52Julián Fernández gets on the scoresheet for New York City FCJulián Fernández gets on the scoresheet for New York City FC
Dallas found real joy by switching to a back three in the second half
It's hard not to think about what could've been for Chicago after goalkeeper Brady was sent off for a clumsy collision with Orlando's Duncan McGuire
The Fire had pieced together a slew of high-quality looks in the first half
but simply couldn't sustain that pressure with 10 men in what turned into a 0-0 draw
Thanks to a pair of goals in first-half stoppage time, D.C. earned a 2-1 win over the Rapids. Christian Benteke
back up top after missing a game due to injury
bagged himself another impressive headed goal along the way
The sooner Houston forget their 2-0 loss to LAFC, the better. With just four shots and a late red card to Franco Escobar
there were precious few positives for a Dynamo team that's searching for attacking answers
Herculez Gomez and Cristina Alexander debate the biggest storylines and break down the best highlights that soccer in the Americas has to offer. Stream on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
Up against the seemingly unstoppable Whitecaps, RSL fell 2-1 with their only goal coming from a 96th-minute Diego Luna penalty. With new striker Willy Agada subbing on at halftime
the hope is that he starts next time out in a move that transforms the team in the final third
Atlanta collected a point in a 1-1 home draw with Nashville SC
While they got on the scoresheet for the first time since early April
there's tons of work to do for the Five Stripes
Olof Mellberg's team couldn't find a way to threaten in the attack -- and the defense wasn't any better in a 4-1 loss
It's almost impossible to find a silver lining from Toronto's 2-0 loss to New England
The Reds weren't dangerous in front of goal
they were far too open in defensive transition
For the first time in MLS history, a team won a game without taking a shot. That honor goes to SKC, who beat the Galaxy 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a Maya Yoshida own goal
It's impossible to see this team turning things around any time soon
As if things couldn't get any worse for the Galaxy
they became the first team in league history to lose a game without conceding a shot in a 1-0 own goal-induced defeat to SKC

AMHERST — A fight between students at Amherst Regional Middle School last week that prompted a shelter-in-place order when parents got involved in the incident and staff members were injured
is prompting educators in the Amherst-Pelham schools to request district leaders take a series of steps to improve safety
Xiomara Herman and her team to come up with refined plans for protecting students
“We urge the district to partner with the APEA to review existing safety procedures and ensure consistent
well-communicated safety protocols are enacted across each school,” reads the statement
released by high school teacher Claire Cocco
the completion of the district’s proposed Caregiver Guide needs to be expedited with educator input
Such a comprehensive guide could offer appropriate action steps for families of students so that we can partner with
according to information Herman released on Thursday in email messages to families
began as an altercation between several students at the school
where seventh and eighth graders from Amherst
The situation escalated when parents got to the Chestnut Street school and involved themselves in the altercation
She also confirmed in the email that staff members were injured
the school issued a shelter-in-place and called Amherst Police Department while the situation was deescalated
The APD responded quickly and have been working with us as we review what happened,” Herman wrote
The middle school building also houses the district offices
“I want to be clear — this kind of behavior is deeply concerning and not reflective of the safe
and student-centered environment we strive to create each day,” Herman wrote
“We are currently working with staff and local authorities to fully understand the circumstances and will share additional information as we are able
Please know that student and staff safety remain my top priority
and this matter will be taken seriously from my level.”
Herman discussed the creation of the Caregiver Code of Conduct
with a shared set of expectations for how families and schools could work together to maintain safety
and be partners in creating safe and supportive learning environments
That announcement came after a confrontation took place between parents inside Fort River School in February
That incident also included working with Amherst Police
having a police report filed and supplemented
and the Hampshire Sheriff’s Office delivering no trespass orders to those involved
The code is expected to outline shared values of respect
and will provide guidance on conflict resolution and reinforce a collective responsibility to model appropriate behavior for students
it’s important that we take this moment to reflect together,” Herman wrote
“Our children are watching us — how we handle conflict
It’s on all of us to model respectful and productive ways to engage
I truly believe we can do better — and that together
we can help guide our students toward healthier ways of resolving issues.”
The union’s statement also addressed the Amherst and Regional school committees: “It is the responsibility of the school committees and other district leaders to provide a safe and healthy workplace for employees and students
whether it be with students or community members.”

A hearing officer from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has recommended overruling Whole Foods’ objections challenging the January union election at one of its Philadelphia stores — the first Whole Foods to unionize
paves the way for the company and the union to negotiate a first contract
“This ruling is definitive — Whole Foods lost
and it’s time for the company to respect the results,” Wendell Young IV
“Whole Foods told the public it would respect the outcome of the vote
Now that their legal challenges have failed
said the hearing officer’s report is only “preliminary,” and is “not a ruling.”
“We remain confident that our objections will ultimately be upheld as the full process plays out,” the company statement said
A majority of workers at the 2101 Pennsylvania Ave. store voted in January to unionize with UFCW Local 1776, 130 to 100. Since the election, UFCW has alleged, workers who supported the union have been unfairly fired
In February, Whole Foods filed five objections to the January election
A hearing officer wrote last week that “All of the objections are without merit,” according to a report viewed by The Inquirer
The report recommends that the objections be overruled and that the union certification be issued by the regional director
alleged that the union promised that employees would get a 30% raise if they voted in favor of the union and offered transportation to and from the store on voting day
The NLRB hearing took place over two days and included testimony from 10 witnesses
