A new Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers location is under construction at CityWalk in Universal Studios Hollywood
Raising Cane’s is a quick-service restaurant originally named for owner Todd Graves’s Labrador Retriever
The location is known for serving a menu of almost entirely chicken fingers
with only some sides and drinks along with the chicken meals
The restaurant chain already has several locations across the Los Angeles and Hollywood area
Raising Cane’s replaces Dongpo Kitchen
All Dongpo Kitchen signage has been removed from the building
and now Cane’s decals are on the glass fence around the restaurant
Additional advertisements fill the windows
The glass fence and ads say the restaurant is “Coming Soon” in the restaurant’s usual red and white color scheme
no other changes have been made to the exterior of the building
The new Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers is across from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen, which opened at Universal CityWalk Hollywood two years ago
Last fall, the Hello Kitty and Friends Cafe opened at CityWalk along with the Sanrio Smile Shop. Soon after, Mini Monster closed
Are you excited for CityWalk at Universal Studios Hollywood to have a new dining location

SAN ANTONIO – Updated at 4:13 with a statement from Bellamy’s family
Days after he lost a federal lawsuit against Ford Motor Company
the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that a former Universal City police officer was found dead at his home
who has been working as a Cibolo police officer since November 2021
according to the medical examiner’s office
Hard-hitting journalism from the KSAT Investigates team delivered straight to your inbox
Bellamy sued Ford Motor Company after getting acute carbon monoxide poisoning while working as a Universal City police officer in 2021
a jury found that the vehicle did not have a design or manufacturing defect to cause carbon monoxide intrusion
In a statement provided to KSAT Investigates through their attorney
the Bellamy family said they are devastated by the loss
“We continue to believe that Ford Motor Company should be held fully accountable for everything that Jeremy and his family have lost,” the family said
his friends in law enforcement and his family will live on.”
KSAT has reached out to Ford Motor Company for comment
Bellamy told KSAT Investigates about how the diagnosis affected him
He said his mental health was also affected
that’s what triggered all my nightmares,” Bellamy said
The medical examiner’s office has not determined Bellamy’s cause and manner of death
“The whole agency is hurting,” said Universal City Police Chief Johnny Siemens
who added that he’s praying for Bellamy’s family
Cibolo police told KSAT that they’re working on a statement
which should be released Thursday afternoon

SAN ANTONIO – A former Universal City Police officer lost his case against Ford Motor Company this week
according to records filed in federal court
Jeremy Bellamy sued Ford after he said sitting in one of its cars nearly killed him
Bellamy told KSAT Investigates about how he believed a 2019 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor led to him getting acute carbon monoxide poisoning
he was in his police car with the engine idling in March 2021
KSAT Investigates asked Bellamy how the diagnosis has affected him
alleged there are defects in the car’s manufacturing and design
She said Ford did not do enough to warn police departments about those risks
Ford kind of sits in the same shoes as a felon fleeing on foot who tries to hurt Jeremy,” Farrell said
a jury found that the vehicle did not have a deign or manufacturing defect that caused carbon monoxide intrusion
“We appreciate that the jury’s verdict is consistent with the findings by Ford and The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the Explorer is safe,” Ford spokesperson Richard Binhammer said

Ever since the co-founder of Universal Pictures
opened the gates of Universal City to patrons in 1915
Universal Studios in Hollywood has sought to bring the public up close and personal with the magic of filmmaking
While this venture began as a simple pulling back of the curtain and demonstrating what goes on behind the scenes on a studio lot
the mission expanded once other studios in Los Angeles began to follow suit
Around the time that the Music Corporation of America (MCA) took possession of the studio in the early 1960s
it was decided that the tour should now include some staged elements
Seeing an opportunity to compete with The Walt Disney Company's success with their theme parks
Universal then decided to build a park around their studio lot
they not only boasted several rides and attractions to go along with their tram tour
but ads for Universal Studios theme parks (in both Los Angeles and Orlando
Florida) promised guests that they'd be able to "ride the movies."
Not only is the haunt a good mix of licensed horror films and original concepts
and the best of them aren't just spooky but truly immersive
making you feel like you'd stepped into the movie screen
Now, Universal Studios is attempting to kick off a sister event to Halloween Horror Nights: Universal Fan Fest Nights
a Spring/Summer attraction that's run after-hours in the park
featuring a mix of fan-friendly properties and activities
I was lucky enough to attend the opening night of FFN this past weekend
and while there are some aspects of the event that suffer from kinks that need working out
the best parts of the attraction indicate that Fan Fest Nights could indeed be a legitimate way to live out your cinematic fantasies for an evening
If you've dipped your toes into geek culture (and let's face it
then you know that fan conventions have been a huge industry for the past couple of decades
Cons have developed to the point where they're all specialized in some way
so while there are the big cons like [Insert City Here] Comic Con
which attempt to cater to a wide variety of fandoms
there are dozens of offshoot cons — ones that are based around anime
While every convention makes a point of featuring some manner of attractions (guests
a large part of the draw of a con is for fans to simply cosplay and congregate
It's that latter vibe which Fan Fest Nights seems to want to cultivate, and if opening night is any indication, they're doing a pretty good job of it. While the park does have some strict guidelines for cosplay
it certainly seems to welcome whatever fandom you wish to celebrate during your time there
most folks attending FFN will want to take advantage of the immersive possibilities of dressing up like characters from the provided worlds and attractions; I myself saw a bunch of "Star Trek," "Dungeons & Dragons," and "Back to the Future" characters
There's also Universal's full-time "Harry Potter" section of the park
and FFN certainly doesn't ignore its popularity; not only are "Potter" cosplays welcome
but some additional performers had been hired to mill around The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
including some who were showing off some really impressive puppeteered creatures (a baby dragon and a fuzzy Niffler
There's also a lights and fireworks show against the already-striking backdrop of Hogwarts Castle
and while it isn't so elaborate as to best its counterparts at the Disney parks
Although the years-long popularity of Halloween Horror Nights has allowed Universal to get Fan Fest Nights up and running fairly quickly
it feels like there are some drawbacks to the experience which
The biggest aspect of this is that FFN is an after-hours experience presented at an amusement park that's open year-round
which means that some much-needed maintenance on the park has to continue while it's open
while the park in general remains open to attendees
there will periodically be some attractions that are closed for the night
when the ride "Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge" was closed for maintenance
save for the fact that guests were encouraged to wander all over Super Nintendo World to look for Yoshi's eggs
a scavenger hunt which resulted in a special meet-and-greet with Yoshi himself
The closure made the experience feel a bit stunted
especially as Super Nintendo World is a bit of a cul-de-sac in the park itself
closures aren't an impediment to Halloween Horror Nights
as the mazes and scare zones are more than enough to occupy a guest's time for the entire night
so part of the problem is that there isn't yet enough to do and see at Fan Fest Nights
although it wasn't an issue on opening night
it was notable that the tram transporting us to "Back to the Future: Destination Hill Valley" (more on that later) required guests to be quiet as we were driven by several active soundstages that were currently shooting things like the next season of Max's "Hacks." Again
given that the mazes and even the Terror Tram tend to steer clear of the stages
but if FFN is going to continue to expand into the backlot
the mazes at Halloween Horror Nights really showcase Universal's talent for immersion
and it helps that each maze contains a quickly digestible "narrative." It's fairly easy to walk through a maze and know everything that's happening
the "in-world experiences" at Fan Fest Nights are more ambitious affairs
there are still some kinks that could be worked out
In "Star Trek: Red Alert," you and a bunch of fellow guests are transported to the Enterprise-D and are escorted from sickbay to the bridge when a mysterious alien entity threatens the ship
In "Dungeons & Dragons: Secrets of Waterdeep," you and the other attendees are split into groups by class (Fighter
etc.) and taken through an adventure by some Harpers in order to stop the evil Xanathar the Beholder
there were moments where the immersion effect was genuinely great; for myself
I was thrilled to go into the Enterprise's turbolift
making it feel like I was riding up to the bridge
Most impressive was the way the actors effortlessly glided between their scripted blocking while milling amidst the guests
just enough to make us feel like we were a part of the show as opposed to simply walking around and watching the show
the experiences are heavily reliant on scripted dialogue
It felt like the sound system (or perhaps the sound mixing) wasn't up to snuff
meaning that so much of the explanations of what was happening got lost
while it was neat to be making eye contact with the actors during the experience
it felt like they were too "on rails" to really bring us into the story
something that felt especially egregious as a friend of mine was even wearing a Starfleet uniform
While adjusting the mic and sound levels feels like it would be a quick
a potentially trickier yet no less important element to address is how each experience is made up of environments without ceilings
This lack of ceilings is similar to the way the mazes in HHN are constructed
and certainly has to do with how quickly these structures need to be put up and struck
where the HHN mazes are all about distracting you with things to look at while you're constantly moving
you're brought into spaces where you stop and stay a while
This is fun until you eventually look up and see the bare inner workings of a soundstage
That turbolift effect is ruined once you simply look up and see you're not actually moving
Full disclosure: I am far from the world's biggest anime fan
and have only a cursory knowledge of that subgenre of animation
Yet I'm certainly aware of its popularity and influence
two things that were abundantly on display at Fan Fest Nights
By far one of the most popular attractions was the character meet and greets for "One Piece," so much so that the lines were prohibitively long for me to experience them
That's because each of the "One Piece" characters was being portrayed by live actors in costume
which is a distinction from the meet and greets of Yoshi and the Mario Bros
The latter has the performers in a "mascot" style suit that you're used to seeing at other parks
there isn't much for them to do besides move a bit and pose
the "One Piece" characters are presented a la the Marvel and "Star Wars" characters in Disneyland
where the actors can interact with guests in character for a while
While the "One Piece" fan zone took up a good portion of the Upper Lot (complete with photo ops
there was just a little bit of space carved out for fans of "Jujutsu Kaisen." In addition to a stand selling themed snacks
Universal's Dreamworks Theatre was showing an original short feature
"Jujutsu Kaisen: Hunger of the Cursed," at staggered intervals
While I did not get to see the short myself
it seems that it also attempts to involve the audience with its storyline
the anime attractions at FFN appeared to be super popular
a sign that perhaps Universal should look into licensing some more properties to cater to those fans
not only had the entire area been transformed into Hill Valley
There were several photo ops: one with the DeLorean time machine (including a live Einstein!)
one with the constantly-burning tire trails and rotating license plate of the time machine next to the clock tower
one with the giant speaker from Doc Brown's lab
There's also a snack bar (featuring BTTF-themed treats) and a merch kiosk
was a rotating group of actors portraying the key roles from the film: Marty McFly
Not only did the actors perform scripted vignettes from the movie
they would naturally and entertainingly interact with the nearby guests
the entire experience is on a 45-minute loop
ending with a recreation of the night Marty goes back to the future thanks to lightning hitting the clock tower
you have free rein to mill about the spacious backlot area
catch various vignettes you may have missed the last time around
and witness things like an entire Enchantment Under the Sea dance live performance from a band portraying Marvin Berry and the Starlighters
though some of the experience is "on rails," it feels much more interactive and immersive than anything else in FFN
and is the sort of experience worth going back again and again for to discover what else you can see and what you may have missed
It's "Destination Hill Valley" that feels like the best example of what Fan Fest Nights should be: an attraction that is immersive and personalized enough to feel like both an indulgence and a reward for being a fan
there are limitations to expanding and improving Fan Fest Nights
but it feels like Universal has a really good start here
the fact that basically the real set for "Back to the Future" was already part of the lot helps give "Destination Hill Valley" a huge leg up
while the "Star Trek" and "Dungeons & Dragons" experiences needed to be built from scratch
Yet there are ways to expand the latter — why not have "Trek" characters hanging around the Ten Forward bar
Perhaps some area of the park could be designated as a zone for a quick game of D&D
When it comes to replicating the success of "Destination Hill Valley," there are certainly other Universal properties around to utilize
Though a "Psycho" experience would be best left to Halloween Horror Nights
why couldn't there be an exploration of Amity Island around "Jaws?" Once the "Fast and Furious: Hollywood Drift" coaster opens
it'd be a hoot to see Dom Toretto and his gang milling about the park
perhaps driving around in one of their signature vehicles
it's clear to me that Universal could end up turning Fan Fest Nights into an event which rivals Halloween Horror Nights — and maybe even surpasses it — with just a little bit more effort
and "Destination Hill Valley" makes it a must-see if you're a fan of "Back to the Future." If not
hopefully Universal will create something for the event that you are a fan of
because being a fan of something at the park is indeed key to the whole experience
All it takes is a little bit of immersive magic to make a Fan Fest Night truly memorable

SAN ANTONIO – A federal judge has cleared the way for a former Universal City police officer to take a major car manufacturer to trial
Jeremy Bellamy believes his assigned patrol unit nearly killed him
Bellamy spent 16 years with UCPD and countless hours on patrol
his last unit was a 2019 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor
“(The vehicle is) their office,” Jeremy Bellamy’s wife
A woman called 911 after noticing Bellamy was unconscious
Bellamy was in the Ford Explorer for three hours
Court records said doctors diagnosed Bellamy with acute carbon monoxide poisoning
His mental health was also affected by the diagnosis
A Ford Motor Company spokesperson declined to comment because the case is still pending
said there are defects in the car’s manufacturing and design
“That’s a pretty strong comparison,” KSAT said in response
I think that Ford’s conduct is even worse.”
Bellamy and his wife believe Ford needs to be held responsible
“Had they taken responsibility and fix the issues years ago
we wouldn’t be sitting here right now,” Jackie Bellamy said
The couple will continue on their path to justice while Jeremy upholds it
Bellamy is still a police officer who drives a newer model of the car he believes nearly killed him
Carbon monoxide concerns have been raised before regarding Ford Explorer Police interceptors
In 2017, KXAN in Austin reported that the city’s police department pulled nearly 400 of those SUVs from patrol
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spent nearly six years investigating more than 1,500 other complaints for older models
In a 2023 report
NHTSA found those models with higher levels of carbon monoxide have “almost always” been outfitted for lights and sirens
The report found no safety defects in the cars themselves

black cameras attached to poles keep an eye on the thousands of cars that pass by
It’s part of the Flock Safety camera system. Universal City has had the system in place for about two months
“I was kind of skeptical at first,” said Universal City Police Lt
12 of the cameras are installed in Universal City
The department has their locations listed on their policy for the camera’s usage
the system takes a picture of the back of the car
“It’s a reactive tool more than anything,” said Universal Police Chief Johnny Siemens
Siemens credits the system with helping solve more cases of stolen vehicles and other property thefts
In December 2024, Live Oak police also credited the Flock system for helping them make an arrest in a gas station shooting
“I think that it’s impacted the profession profoundly,” Siemens said
“Everyone has something to worry about with this system
because it is tracking people’s movements regardless of whether they have been accused of any wrongdoing,” said Savannah Kumar
She believes the presence of the cameras is concerning
“That means that our daily activities of traveling to doctor’s appointments
to dropping off our kids at various activities
the religious centers that we go to or AA meetings — all of that is captured,” said Kumar
The constitutionality of the cameras has even been questioned in court
a federal lawsuit was filed against Norfolk
Virginia claiming the Flock system violates driver’s civil rights
Norfolk Lawsuit by gjimenez on Scribd
When asked what he would say to someone who has concerns about privacy with the system
Siemens said he’s “a citizen like everybody else.”
“I don’t want Big Brother watching any more than anybody else does,” Siemens said
Siemens said that’s why he created a department policy for how the Flock cameras are used
who has access to the data and how long the data is stored
“It’s made a really big difference,” said Rios

Texas – A Universal City man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for three charges related to sexual exploitation of children
the Department of Justice said in a news release
44-year-old Cristopher Lee Castano was reported to the FBI for accessing and transferring child sexual abuse material on his employer’s computer system
Authorities said they discovered child sexual abuse material created by Castano from 2015 to 2018 after executing a federal search warrant
The ages of Castano’s victims ranged from five months to 14 years old
and was indicted on 13 counts on charges related to sexual exploitation of children
The DOJ said Castano pleaded guilty to three counts on October 12
He has remained in federal custody since his arrest
In addition to his 60-year prison sentence
Castano was ordered to pay restitution to two of the child victims at $50,000 each and another $5,000 each to five additional victims
“I thank Castano’s employer for reporting his actions to our partners at the FBI
who helped us achieve this just sentence,” said Acting U.S
Attorney for the Western District of Texas Margaret Leachman
“While this does not erase what the child victims endured
we hope that they find some solace in the fact that Castano is no longer a threat to anyone,” she said

What if there was a scare-free version of Halloween Horror Nights for fraidy cats (like me)
That’s the quickest way I can sum up Universal Fan Fest Nights
an interactive recreation of Hill Valley in 1955 on the very same section of the backlot where the 1985 film was shot
Hop aboard the studio tour tram and you’ll be whisked down to Courthouse Square
where you can roam around on foot as familiar scenes spontaneously play out around you (and actors may even chat you up in-character)
and I’d definitely encourage you to spend enough time down here to see every possible scene from Marty McFly
Doc Brown and the rest of the lead characters
the Dungeons & Dragons walk-through looks mostly cool (particularly an excellent Xanathar puppet crafted by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop), though a bit of a role-playing tease toward the start doesn’t actually materialize into any sort of storytelling agency
And the panicky Star Trek one… well that definitely doesn’t feel worth the wait (and also makes a case for why Horror Night’s lights-turned-real-low ambience works best for these sorts of soundstage walk-throughs)
Food and photo op lines are also a little all over the place. (You’re welcome to come in costume, by the way, as long as you follow these guidelines.) I excitedly waited less than 15 minutes for the debut of Yoshi
who you can pose for photos with just inside the entrance of Super Nintendo World
That’s also where you can pick up a paper crown for a scavenger hunt that’ll have you searching for Yoshi eggs around the land
you flag down an employee for a sticker when you find one; in reality
you can just join the very obvious sticker line. That took me about 15 minutes to complete
and after I’d stickered all of the empty slots on my crown
I was able to join a mystery line—that I ended up being in for an hour
and it was ultimately just to meet a pink variant of Yoshi
wait times for rides were basically nothing
And since the price of admission is as much as $60 less than a daytime ticket
I’d for sure make sure to tackle the Mario Kart
Harry Potter and Jurassic World rides (those all close a bit early)

SAN ANTONIO – A fight over prescription pills is what led to a woman killing her husband
Universal City Police Chief Johnny Siemens said detectives spent about four hours Wednesday interviewing 61-year-old Constance Seinwill
She admitted to killing her husband in a fit of rage
“He had hid her Xanax from her,” Siemens said
“She was in an intoxicated state at that point already.”
Police found Seinwill’s husband dead on the living room floor of their home in the 100 block of Rising Star
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Ronald Seinwill Jr.
Siemens said neighbors had called 911 after Seinwill knocked on their door and told them she had killed her husband
The police chief said it appears the victim was hit in the head repeatedly with an object

Encounter someone who saw “Star Trek: The Experience” in Las Vegas, which opened in the late ’90s and ran for about a decade, and expect nostalgic reflections of running aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and taking part in transporter illusions. But since the latter shuttered, “Star Trek” has essentially lacked a major theme park-like attraction in the U.S.
Separately ticketed evening events have become a way to wring more dollars out of theme parks, with the Disneyland Resort essentially offering them year-round, and now Universal expanding its offerings beyond the fall season. Single evening tickets start at $74, and there are packages and add-ons that can stretch the price all the way to $373. Guests are encouraged to come in costume, and Universal’s rides will be operational throughout the evening.
Travel & Experiences
Universal’s Epic Universe is largely a triumph, and will instantly become the the favorite theme park of many. It should also change the industry.
“One of the things that makes these experiences really special is the exploratory nature of them,” says Stephen Siercks, senior director of entertainment at Universal Studios Hollywood and executive producer of Fan Fest Nights. “It’s a bit of a choose-your-own adventure along the way.”
but she’s never quite looked or acted like this
“It was important to us to be able to develop the stories and really develop the characters and the environments,” Siercks says
Siercks says Fan Fest has been in development for about three years
While Universal has no shortage of historic sci-fi franchises — “E.T
especially because it once boasted its own ride at the theme park — the studio for Fan Fest partnered with the likes of Paramount and Hasbro to bring in franchises that have more recently been active on streaming or in theaters
Only with “Back to the Future” did Universal tap into its catalog to bank on audience sentimentality
referring to the fictional town of “Back to the Future,” will allow guests to step off a tram and hang out in a working backlot
“They’ll experience Courthouse Square as it was in the ‘Back to the Future’ film
We’ve created new types of character experiences
You get to follow your chosen character to allow the story to unfold.”
“Star Trek” will usher guests from multiple rooms aboard the ship

we’ll enter the shuttle bay and witness a mysterious space entity appear to take control of the ship

we’ll see a warp core start to destabilize
The Enterprise will continue to be disrupted by the entity
and about 10 actors will aim to keep visitors calm while getting to the bottom of what’s happening

but the final scene will be a transporter back down to earth
“We think it’s going to be a perfect moment,” Siercks says
Tickets: $74 and up (separate from regular theme park admission)

“Dungeons & Dragons” is similarly complex, and it’s centered around a tale of a monster known as a “beholder,” a floating eye socket of a creature with a large center orb surrounded by smaller tentacle-like stalks, who has stolen a much-desired dragon staff. The latter here is represented via a large puppet created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and the walk-through experience will take us from taverns to the back alley of a marketplace to the beholder’s lair.
Actors will stick with participants from room to room, joining the guests on their quest. Siercks says the team looked for ways to inject interactivity, as certain story points may be triggered by, say, a crystal ball on a shelf, and the entrance to the beholder’s sanctuary requires the solving of a room-size puzzle. Creatures abound, such as a shape-shifting mimic disguised as a chest, and yes, of course there will be a dragon, here seen as a projection.
Entertainment & Arts
The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.
Siercks has been with Universal about 20 years, and says Fan Fest allows him to explore his love of theater. “I have a background in theater design and production, so I came from theater and very early on I got to experience themed entertainment and I haven’t looked back since,” he says. “To be able to develop experiences on this scale, and to create experiences that drop our guests into the middle of the action, is the best of both worlds. It’s a very theatrical experience.”
Yet the underlying core of Fan Fest will transform Universal Studios Hollywood, a park initially built on cinematic properties around a working studio, into a stage. And in the case of “Star Trek,” “Dungeons & Dragons” and “Back to the Future,” we’re invited to have a starring role.
