The City of Upper Arlington is conducting a detailed analysis of the community’s housing market to gain a better understanding of existing conditions and trends at the local level and within the regional context
The study is being conducted by CommunityScale
an urban planning and spatial data analysis company that utilizes state-of-the-art analytics to help municipal governments
housing developers and advocates understand and respond more effectively to communities’ complex housing needs
The study is built around a detailed analysis of existing conditions
This includes core data such as the number and types of housing currently available
trends in property values and housing cost increases
as well as trends in remodeling and new construction activity over the past 10 years
The study will explore demographic changes within Upper Arlington and the region over the past 20 years
providing an analysis of how those trends have changed the local housing market
There will also be a detailed analysis of the economics of different housing to help estimate the magnitude of future demand and the potential for new development
The study will identify any challenges within the current environment that might be restricting access to housing or limiting residents’ ability to move within the community as their housing needs evolve
CommunityScale will provide an analysis of the impacts any prospective city programs or policy changes might have on the cost and availability of housing in Upper Arlington
In addition to analyzing the available data
the study team has been conducting a series of interviews with local stakeholders
developers of single- and muti-family housing
Feedback from the broader community is also key to this process
and CommunityScale is currently seeking input from residents via an online survey
which can be accessed using the above link
seeking your impressions on the current housing marking in UA
what you would look for when considering moving to a new home
and what steps the City could take to improve or increase housing options within the community
Once CommunityScale has completed its study

the Upper Arlington school board on Tuesday unanimously removed a May 2021 policy that created “all-gender” bathrooms for students
The move comes as the effective date for Ohio's so-called "bathroom bill" looms.
District spokeswoman Karen Truett said the district had around 50 single-occupancy toilet rooms that were labeled “all gender.”
A June 2023 resolution refers to the bathrooms as “private
gender-neutral restrooms,” and calls the bathrooms
and grounded in the mission of Upper Arlington Schools.”
The Tuesday vote changed "all gender" bathroom signage to read "single occupancy."
Truett said some of the single-toilet rooms are for staff only
25 requires schools to designate all multi-occupancy bathrooms and locker rooms as male or female only
prohibits multi-person all-gender or non-gender bathroom
allows for “family facilities,” meaning a restroom or shower room that does not have more than one toilet or shower
Upper Arlington Schools' Board President Jenny McKenna said during Tuesday’s meeting that the district remains committed to being an inclusive learning environment
while continuing to prioritize student safety
and respect in our school communities,” McKenna said
The board’s Tuesday resolution also references the benefits of student and staff well-being and the importance of making students feel valued
“This supportive atmosphere can also reduce incidents of bullying
and encourage positive interactions among students,” the resolution reads
School administrative staff will be available to meet with students or parents who are confused about the changes or are concerned about the new law
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost threatened legal action against the Columbus City Schools' Board of Education after its members debated ignoring the new bathroom law earlier this month
Yost wrote that compliance with the law “is not optional.”
“Please be advised that the ramifications to the Board for defying Senate Bill 104 are clear and simple,” Yost wrote in a Feb
5 letter to CCS Board President Michael Cole
“I will swiftly bring legal action against the board to obtain a court order forcing the board to take all actions necessary to immediately comply with all applicable mandates of Senate Bill 104.”
Board President Michael Cole suggested reaffirming the district’s transgender and gender variant policy
instead of updating it to comply with the new state law
CCS board members Jennifer Adair and Sarah Ingles suggested tabling the motion until it could be discussed further
Some of the changes the CCS board is considering include adding language that says
“students are only permitted to use restrooms
or shower rooms consistent with their sex assigned at birth,” and removing a paragraph that gave a school administrator the ability to consider a transgender and gender variant students’ preferences when assigning them a bathroom
The Columbus City Schools next board meeting is scheduled for Feb

and the Upper Arlington Community Foundation
Upper Arlington is fortunate to be called home by many residents who understand the value of giving back to their community
Whether it’s through volunteerism or philanthropy
UA is stronger and more cohesive because of the many acts of kindness bestowed on our community through various civic groups
The contributions of the Upper Arlington Community Foundation are showcased and celebrated at its annual event
This year’s Heart of UA is scheduled for the evening of Sunday
April 27 at the Bob Crane Community Center
Funds raised from the Heart of UA enable the Foundation to make an impact in the community as a grant maker
Prior honorees include: Kip Greenhill (2024)
The Foundation may be best known for its recent successful effort to raise $8.1 million in financial support for the Bob Crane Community Center
but there’s so much more to the work that the Foundation does to enrich the community

Black History Month is an important observance dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the achievements
this month-long commemoration plays a vital role in fostering understanding
and honoring the legacies of those who have shaped the nation’s history
Black History Month serves as an opportunity to highlight African American contributions to society – whether it’s in science
or civil rights – that have often been overlooked in traditional historical narratives
and media outlets to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion to help build a more informed and empathetic society
The month-long observance also reminds us that
discrimination and social injustices still persist
inspiring us to collectively reach for a more equitable future
UA’s celebration of Black History Month begins with an exhibit at the Tremont Library by Said Oladejo-Lawal
who was the 2024 Labor Day Arts Festival Best of Show winner
Said’ s passion for art began at an early age
a contractor specializing in painting and design
After studying painting at Nigeria’s Yaba College of Technology
Said expanded his skills with a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh
His artistic journey evolved from pencils and crayons to photography
impressionistic style evokes deep emotions
often bringing abstract themes like music into visual form
Said is an active member of the Worthington Art League
and he hopes his work inspires a lasting connection with viewers
You can enjoy this exhibit during regular Library hours
and at the upcoming Black History Month Celebration
jointly hosted by the City of Upper Arlignton and the Upper Arlington Library on the afternoon of Saturday
share her Affrilachian Tales – stories of Black Americans in Appalachia
and a rousing musical performance by Urban Strings Columbus – Columbus’ string orchestra that recruits and supports young musicians from underserved

The City of Upper Arlington is moving forward with the next phase of the Redding Road resurfacing project budgeted for 2025 that includes new pavement surface and spot curb replacement
The need to reconfigure the area between Fishinger Road and Zollinger Road stemmed from concerns over speeding and safety as well as a desire to add multimodal options
the Engineering Division and a design consultant developed six alternative designs
each aimed at enhancing the road’s functionality while ensuring the safety of the neighborhood
Community input has been a crucial part of the decision-making process
Residents living in the impacted area along with community members were invited to provide feedback at public meetings over the last two years
Alternative #5 best addressed concerns from the community and was favored by those who live in the impacted area
with the bidding process to start early next year
Final cost estimates for the project are expected to be completed in the coming weeks
The Community Relations Committee invites the community to join them for the Second Annual Iftar Dinner
The Iftar Dinner is part of the CRC’s Welcome Series
which is designed to provide spaces for all members of our community to come together in new and exciting ways to recognize
celebrate and learn about the different cultures and experiences each of us brings with us
and to make sure that everyone who lives here
works here or is visiting our community feels welcomed and supported
Our thanks to the Upper Arlington Community Foundation for facilitating the reservation process and for sponsoring a dessert table at this event
Registration for the 2025 Iftar Dinner is now open
Seats are limited and available on a first-come

A new tornado siren has been installed at Miller Park
helping to strengthen emergency notification coverage in the area
Recently relocated from Jones Middle School
the siren is now installed behind the Upper Arlington Public Library’s Miller Park Branch to better serve the surrounding neighborhoods
Managed by the Franklin County Emergency Management & Homeland Security
the siren will now be included in the countywide weekly tornado siren test
These regular tests ensure the system is functioning properly and help residents in Upper Arlington stay prepared in the event of severe weather
Tornado sirens are activated by Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security when the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning or when a funnel cloud or tornado is spotted by trained weather spotters. For more information on emergency alerts and preparedness, click here.
