A property next to the G Line Busway's Woodman Station is up for redevelopment with affordable housing via the Mayor's Executive Directive 1, according an application filed last week to the Los Angeles Department of City Planning
The proposed development from property owners Roozbeh Toorani and Maryam Zavareh
calls for razing six existing rental units to clear the way for the construction of a new five-story edifice featuring 104 stduio and one-bedroom apartments without on-site parking
Requested approvals include density bonus incentives to waive certain zoning standards. The proposed development is eligible for incentives by reserving all apartments for low- and moderate-income renters
KB Fard Architects is designing the building
which is portrayed in plans with a U-shaped footprint wrapping around a central courtyard at ground level
The existing apartment complex, known as the William Mellenthin Birdhouse Apartments, is the subject of a preservation campaign. The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission took up the matter earlier this year

outreach coordinator Yvette Berke turned her driveway into a lifeline for animal rescues
only to have vital supplies worth thousands stolen by a thief.VALLEY GLEN
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The devastating wildfires have uprooted countless lives
pets and the animal rescues that care for them
"We have lost at least six rescues and sanctuaries," said Yvette Berke
an outreach coordinator for Cope Preparedness Pet Program
turning her Valley Glen driveway into a grab-and-go site for rescuers in need
"I had offered up my home as a site for the rescues to be able to come any hour that they wanted," Berke said
Berke's driveway quickly became a critical hub for rescues across the county
But tragedy struck when a thief arrived early in the morning and stole everything
Surveillance video captured the moment when a thief pulled up to Berke's house and started loading items into his pickup truck
An estimated supplies worth of $8,000 to $10,000 was taken
"I came out early in the morning to get ready to greet the first rescue and found out that my driveway had been emptied," Berke said
Berke said she had been monitoring her driveway throughout the week to ensure rescuers got the supplies they needed
she turned off her notifications to catch up on sleep
"I could say hello to whoever it was but it was so many days of doing that that I needed to get some rest," Berke said
Berke remains determined to carry out her mission and has reached out to different sponsors to replace the stolen items
"It's fuel for me to make sure they have the support they need to do the job that they do," Berke said

The second leading cause was crashes involving fixed objects
Other significant causes included pedestrian incidents and non-collision events like rollovers
While vehicle-to-vehicle collisions caused less than half of all fatalities
they contributed to the majority of injuries
single-vehicle crashes—such as collisions with fixed objects
and rollovers—resulted in a higher proportion of fatalities and fatal crashes
These types of incidents made up 54% of deaths and 56% of fatal crashes but only 25% or less of total injuries
causing approximately 8,800 deaths in 2022

Highland Glen offers singletrack trails that wind through wildflower-filled meadows
Providing a welcome natural respite from the bustling Bozeman core
and quiet walks interrupted only by “moos” from the resident summertime herd of cattle
At the preserve’s southern access point on Kagy Boulevard, you can connect to Painted Hills Trail, which in turn can be linked with Triple Tree Trail for an 11-mile lollipop loop entirely on singletrack. If you start your journey from the Gallagator Trail by Bozeman Public Library
you can up this mileage to 17 miles roundtrip
completing the crux of the Main Street to the Mountains trail system
Thanks to the generosity of Bozeman Health and the Bridger Ski Foundation
Highland Glen offers a year-round prescription for getting outside
The trail can be muddy in the fall and spring
It is groomed for cross-country skiing in the winter by Bridger Ski Foundation
Parking is available at the Softball Complex off Highland Boulevard and Ellis Street
Allowed on-leash only due to wildlife and cattle on the property
Restrooms are open from May to October by the Softball Complex parking lot
There are multiple entrances to the nature preserve from Highland Boulevard and Kagy Boulevard
The parking lot at the Softball Complex is an asphalt surface with no dedicated accessible spaces and no curb cuts for exiting the parking area onto the trails. Highland Glen’s trails are primarily narrow natural surface trails. The fenceline trail is approximately four feet wide and has a firm natural surface
and it connects to city-managed compacted gravel trails
Call GVLT about maintenance issues at 406-587-8404
we believe being outdoors is the best medicine
And the open space across from Bozeman’s hospital looked to us like just what the doctor ordered
GVLT and Bridger Ski Foundation (BSF) approached Bozeman Health
with a proposal to create cross-country ski trails for community use
so we returned to Bozeman Health and asked for permission to develop them into summer trails
and the Highland Glen singletrack trail system was born in 2011
Bozeman Health and BSF were active partners in planning the six miles of trails that now wind through cow pastures
The 0.5-mile Wellness Trail features a bridge and a critical
safe connection to Highland Glen for the nearby neighborhoods and businesses off Haggerty Lane
GVLT worked with Bozeman Health to create the Homestead Connector
completing a loop that connects from the Wellness Trail to the East Ridge Trail of the preserve

6-Pascack Valley (18-10) at 1-Glen Rock (25-4)
Pascack Valley and Glen Rock are meeting for the second time this season
but bigger stakes are on the line in Saturday’s sectional final
erasing a 10-point deficit on the road and winning by one
Sixth-seeded Pascack Valley is searching for its 15th sectional championship overall and first since 2019
Pascack Valley dropped down from Group 3 to Group 2 this season
has been the favorite to come out of its side of the bracket and is searching for its first sectional championship since 2013
and will need to get past Pascack Valley to win its first title in a dozen years
Defend the 3-point line: Any team that plays Pascack Valley knows how prolific coach Jeff Jasper’s team is from beyond the arc
Pascack Valley has connected on over 200 3-pointers this season and has two of the top shooters in North Jersey in senior Celina Bussanich and sophomore Raina Gibbs
and Glen Rock has to be at its best defending the 3-point line
Glen Rock allowed just three 3-pointers in the first meeting and will try and replicate that success on Saturday
Get off to quick start: Nerves are likely to be high on Saturday because of it being a sectional final
You know what would help calm the nerves for both teams
A fast start for either Pascack Valley or Glen Rock would put the pressure on the other team to try and keep up

The only things that remain are the fading memories
The imaginary feel of cool water splashing
The familiar smells of summer delights filling the air
It’s a great example of why history is so fascinating
And it’s the perfect example of why local history is so important
and it was one of Lebanon County’s only and earliest amusement parks
What is not known about it shrouds it in mystery
But what we do know about it re-affirms who we are
and the fact that recreation is timeless and universal
History may not always be a predictor of the future
“I just think it’s fascinating,” said Craig Meyer
a local historian who resides in North Annville Township
a mere stone’s throw away from the former site of Valley Glen Park
and it pre-dated all of the amusement parks in the area
“I think local history is very important,” added Meyer
It flushes out the tapestry in which we live
so many things have occurred in this area that people don’t know anything about
Valley Glen Park was located off of what is now Valley Glen Road in the northwest corner of North Annville Township
not far from where the Quittapahilla Creek flows into the Swatara Creek
The 40-acre park was the inspiration of local farmer and carpenter Daniel Light Kline
The heyday of Valley Glen Park occurred between 1888 and 1930
but the park is believed to have hosted visitors before and after those dates
If you rely on us for your Lebanon County news
“I don’t know the origins of its name,” said Meyer
There’s a distinct possibility that that the name of the area came from Valley Glen Park
There was never any significant community there
“I really don’t know the genesis of the park,” Meyer added
Kline was born on the farm that he eventually owned
But what drove him to build this very popular park
He had the property and the skills for working wood.”
Those woodworking skills came in handy in the construction of some of Valley Glen Park’s amusements
Kline carved some of the 23 wooden horses that adorned the park’s ‘Flying Horse Machine’ or Merry-Go-Round
on the summer days that Valley Glen Park was open
Torches set up around the Flying Horse Machine and the park itself lent a certain ambiance to the setting
“[Valley Glen Park] was a very vibrant local attraction,” said Meyer
“One of the main features was the Flying Horse Machine
There was nothing like it in the immediate area
but this was the closest to them (patrons from Lebanon
“It was a place for relaxation,” continued Meyer
“It was a little cooler there [than in towns]
You could escape to a private area that was clean
Another popular feature of Valley Glen Park was the ‘Shooty-Chute’
sort of a sliding board on steroids constructed 60 feet above the ground among the treetops that propelled adventurous riders on sleds into the waters of ‘The Swatty.’ The attraction was in stark contrast to the ride afforded patrons aboard Valley Glen Park’s ‘Steamboat Annie.’
‘Steamboat Annie’ took its passengers on a quiet half-mile voyage on the scenic Swatara Creek
It was a channel dug from the bottom of ‘The Swatty’ that made ‘Steamboat Annie’s’ passage possible
“You wonder how a boat could get in there,” said Meyer
“But the Swatty had been dammed right below [Kline’s] property
it would blow its horn to alert kids that it was coming up to the dock
“Valley Glen Park was something that was very important,” Meyer continued
store it for summer time and then take it around in wheelbarrows
Visitors would have this wonderful ice to cool them off on hot days in the summer.”
a place to leave the worries of the real world behind
It also provided visitors with a picnic grove equipped with tables
a refreshment stand and changing rooms – woolen swim suits could be rented for four bits
church groups and civic groups,” said Meyer
you’re going to have a lot of groups going there
It was a wide range of people seeking amusement and recreation
“There’s a source that said on one Fourth of July there were 400 bathers at the park,” added Meyer
“There would be several hundred people who would stop by on a beautiful summer day.”
Valley Glen Park may have provided the onus for Hersheypark
which was founded around the beginning of the 20th century
“Milton Hershey used to bring his workers there for recreation,” said Meyer
‘Why don’t you build a park for your employees to relax
You could build it on the hilly part of your land where nothing can grow.’ I don’t know if that’s true or not
But it may be that Valley Glen Park was the inspiration for Hersheypark.”
Valley Glen Park began to decline in the 1930s
visitors to its former site wouldn’t even know that a lively park existed there for more than 40 years
“The popularity of the park was waning in the late 1920s and Daniel Light Kline died in 1936,” said Meyer
but in 1953 one of the family members sold off Valley Glen Park
the property is owned by various people along ‘The Swatty.’ A good portion of it is owned by North Annville Township
“Certainly a lot of people in the area know it was there,” concluded Meyer
people may have still gone there to fish and seen the remnants of the park
People who live here have heard the stories of Valley Glen Park.”
There will never be a place like Valley Glen Park again

Hopatcong; Indian Hills; Kinnelon; Kittatinny; Lenape Valley; Midland Park; Mountain Lakes; New Milford; Newton
North Warren; Park Ridge/Emerson; Pascack Hills; Passaic Arts and Sciences; Paterson Charter; Pequannock; Pompton Lakes; Saddle Brook; Sussex Tech; Waldwick; Wallkill Valley

Park Ridge/Emerson (6th); Pola Gospodarzec
Indian Hills was 9th in group 2 last year)
Predicted North Jersey individual state qualifiers: Myrhen and Finn; Jackie Santana
Top five teams: Mountain Lakes; Indian Hills; North Warren
How the race will go: The winners are pretty easy to project
Mountain Lakes is the clear team favorite and Einreinhofer shouldn't have any problem repeating
although Mountain Lakes freshman Violet Page is a possible threat
But the fifth spot in the team standings is likely to be a free-for-all between Kinnelon
Wallkill Valley and Pascack Hills with a sixth man tiebreaker possible
Teams: Demarest; Dumont; Elmwood Park; Glen Rock; High Point; Jefferson; Lakeland; Leonia; Lodi: Mahwah; Manchester; Morris Tech; Pascack Valley; Passaic Valley; Ramsey; River Dell; Sparta; Vernon; West Essex; West Milford; Westwood
River Dell and Indian Hills (Indian Hills is now in group 1)
Returning individual state qualifers: Maya Van Horn
Glen Rock was 5th in group 1 and Amber Wang
Predicted North Jersey individual state qualifiers: Sophee Estrems and Erika Gargano
How the race will go: An extraordinary race both individually and as a team
Leonia and Morris Tech are very much contenders for a top five place and any of the top five teams could win under the right circumstances
Dominique Cameron and Rappazzo have been sensational all year and Clinton and Frey have traded wins as well
fifth and even sixth runners for the team title
Teams: Bergenfield; Cliffside Park; Dover; Dwight Morrow; Fort Lee; Garfield; Montville; Morris Hills; Morris Knolls; Mount Olive; Northern Highlands; Old Tappan; Paramus; Ramapo; Randolph; Roxbury; Teaneck; Tenafly; Wayne Hills; Wayne Valley

Predicted North Jersey individual state qualifiers: Potaki; Emme Fermin and Katechis
How the race will go: This could be the wildest race of the day with eight teams including Ramapo
Tenafly and Mount Olive in contention for the five qualifying team slots
Old Tappan has a slim edge over Randolph for the title with Northern Highlands a dark horse to win and in great position to earn a 20th straight state group bid
The individual race is as wide open as the team race with Potaki
Piskula and Amanda Knapp of Roxbury all potential winners
Julia Jablonska of Garfield and Christina D'Andrea of Old Tappan all could make the top 15 with big races
Teams: Belleville; Bergen Tech; Bloomfield; Clifton; East Orange; Eastside; Fair Lawn; Hackensack; Kearny; Kennedy; Livingston; Memorial; Morristown; North Bergen; Passaic
Passaic Tech; Ridgewood; Union City; West Orange
Returning state individual qualifiers: Ayla Cooke
Predicted North Jersey individual state qualifiers: Natalie Knowles
How the race will go: Few teams in New Jersey can approach Ridgewood's record of 29 sectional championships since the four section meet started in 1976
The Maroons have never missed qualifying for the state meet and have finished lower than second only six times in 49 races
That won't change this year as they win their seventh straight title
Montclair and Union City will battle for the last two qualifying slots
just a freshman is favored over Keating and it's likely the Maroons' top five will be within the top 10
Hudson champ Leslie Munoz of Memorial could be a title threat
North Jersey teams: Bogota; Hasbrouck Heights; North Arlington; Palisades Park; Ridgefield; Rutherford; Secaucus; Weehawken
Last year's champions: Hasbrouck Heights and Isabel Michel
Returning North Jersey state qualifiers: Lexi Powers
Hasbrouck Heights (2nd); Astrid Taffarello
Hasbrouck Heights (9th); Taitum Sandoval-Diaz
Hasbrouck Heights (13th); Brianna Carrasco
Predicted North Jersey individual state qualifiers: Taffarello
North Jersey outlook: From non-existent to sectional champions in less than a decade
That's exactly what will happen if Weehawken wins its first team title this year
The Indians recently won their first Hudson County title and are favored to win here over conference rival Hasbrouck Heights and McNair
North Jersey teams should comfortably take four of the five team spots and two-thirds of the top 15
Individually look for Weehawken's Taffarello and Dunn and Hasbrouck Heights seniors Bua and Powers to battle for the individual title with dark horse Alexandra Ferreira of Belvidere
North Jersey teams: Becton; Harrison; Lyndhurst; Ridgefield Park
Last year's champions: Voorhees and Kira Chebishev
Returning North Jersey individual state qualifiers: Mika Tampadong
Predicted North Jersey individual state qualifiers: Tampadong; Cathia Noguiera
North Jersey outlook: There are no major North Jersey team contenders
Tampadong is a contender for the individual win along with defending champ Chebisev

Firefighters stop a large blaze and save multiple businesses in a commercial strip mall
On May 25, 2017 at 9:47pm, the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived to find heavy fire in the attic of 13645 W. Vanowen Street in Valley Glen. Crews rapidly deployed multiple hose lines to battle the flames while coordinating their efforts with firefighters ventilating the rooftop
which limited the fire’s horizontal spread despite a shared attic. The area above the unit of origin also incurred a partial roof collapse during the operation causing large flame lengths
Despite multiple businesses within the strip mall being threatened
the fire was held to one unit with exposure to just two units on either side
The greater alarm fire utilized 95 LAFD Firefighters to fully extinguishing the flames in just 69 minutes with no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters
LAFD Arson investigators were called to the scene and the cause of the fire remains under active investigation

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Four firefighters were injured when the driver of a Los Angeles Fire Department fire engine suffered a medical emergency
lost control and crashed the fire truck into five parked cars in Valley Glen early Wednesday
The fire engine knocked down a pair of power poles near the intersection of Burbank Boulevard and Woodman Avenue around 2:30 a.m.
department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said
The firefighters were responding to an emergency call when the crash occurred
It was like 30 feet over," said Daniel Matian
The fallen wires set a liquor store on fire and knocked out power to hundreds of LADWP customers in the Valley Glen and surrounding Sherman Oaks area
Three firefighters were treated at the scene
was transported to a local hospital in serious condition
All four firefighters were later released from the hospital
Burbank Boulevard was temporarily closed in both directions between Woodman and Buffalo avenues as LADWP crews worked to de-energize the live wires and restore power to at least 530 customers

"The companies being hurt by it we were looking to short."
The plan was for Kacher to go to Stanford Business School in 1996 and return to Tiger

McNamee's marching orders: Become a participant in tech
"You don't get to be a participant if they don't think of you as a peer; you need to have a view on the products they value," McNamee says
"Glen is really good at anticipating the success or failure of a product."
Kacher started Light Street with McNamee's backing
Initially he focused on four themes: mobile
yet most of its positions represent giant trends
One trend he's profiting from is small businesses moving online
mobile payments processor Square and low-cost website creator Wix.com are examples
Sometimes he puts money in private companies and learns from them
he made a $50 million investment in Uber and started hanging around the company's executives and directors
What Kacher found out was that Uber's engineers were laser-focused on helping big companies connect their travel-expense software to Uber's systems
So Kacher commissioned surveys and learned that business travelers wanted to substitute rental cars with ride sharing
He shorted rental car companies like Avis and Hertz
and by 2016 those stocks had plunged as much as 70%
Uber and Tesla are the reason Kacher is now shorting auto parts retailers
Ride sharing and electric cars mean less consumer demand for auto parts
dollars that used to be spent in profitable stores are increasingly being spent on their unprofitable online business," Kacher says
referring to many of his brick-and-mortar short positions
Kacher is bullish on Facebook and Amazon but is avoiding Apple
Netflix and Google because he thinks their prospects are dimmer
when 200 million people were using the internet and valuations were insane
Today there are 3.5 billion internet users
and in the last three years Amazon has gone to $8 billion in free cash flow
Kacher thinks Amazon Marketing Services could become a huge ad business
Kacher believes it will be the big winner from a coming massive shift of global TV ad spending online
The reason: Facebook knows a lot more about its users than Google and Apple do
"The idea that there is not enough fundamental growth to support these prices is short-sighted," Kacher says
With only a handful of giants dominating U.S
a market he considers inefficient because of an abundance of passive money

Kacher visits China regularly and says that country isn't just replicating American tech; it's innovating

"We are trying to find the best companies
and I don't care where they are," Kacher says.
