of pride as far as Ivey Perkins is concerned Though she is only one of two seniors on Van Buren’s softball roster Perkins has a great deal of admiration in seeing her younger teammates flourish The Lady Pointers are in the upper half of the 6A-West Conference standings – having won at least six league games – with postseason play fast approaching I’m super proud of my girls and how hard they’ve worked,” Perkins said “Everyone thought we were going to lose every game and be easy to beat this year because we’re young but I think we’ve came really far and made people change their minds.” Having seen action since her freshman season Perkins is a three-year starter for the Lady Pointers Perkins believes her defense is her strongest asset “I know I have a great glove in the outfield and I trust that when the ball gets hit to me I will try my hardest to get the out,” she said “Offense has never been my strongest quality That was one of the priorities Perkins had entering her senior season she batted left-handed and specialized in slap-hitting the ball which Perkins admitted she did a pretty good job of doing before eventually switching to bat from the right side of the plate But it is guiding her younger teammates that really has left an impression on the senior “It is one of my most important jobs as a senior,” Perkins said “They’re all young and I try my best to steer them in the right direction and help them out always in and out of softball They are like my sisters and I would stop at nothing to make them better.” she has enjoyed playing under the Lady Pointers’ longtime coach “The best thing about playing for Coach Williams is that he isn’t too serious,” Perkins said but he always knows how to bring us back into reality We are super lucky to have a coach like him.” Perkins said her favorite memory as a Lady Pointer was as a sophomore when they took two games at home against Greenwood arguably the standard bearer in the 6A-West over the years “That was by far the best most interesting games I’ve ever played in my life,” she said “The energy and the vibe that night was amazing and I wouldn’t change a single thing about it.” Perkins grew up in a family that plays a variety of sports she didn’t take to playing softball until middle school After she finished her freshman year at Van Buren having committed to play at Williams Baptist University Perkins plans to major in biology with hopes of eventually becoming a veterinarian “I have a 3.5 GPA and have always been on top of my work,” she said “I don’t take any (advanced placement) classes and I am a part of the Arkansas Scholars (program).” With her final days approaching as a Lady Pointer Perkins wants to continue making sure her younger teammates pick up the torch once she and fellow senior “My final mindset is to finish as a role model,” Perkins said “I want my girls to look up to me and think only positive things about me.” Arkansas headlines delivered to you on demand Attorney General Tim Court documents offer new details about a Heartland woman who authorities say falsely claimed to be an emergency management official According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office Carter is accused of impersonating a FEMA official who was responding to county flooding Carter was arrested on false impersonation and peace disturbance charges Carter told people she was taking over the disaster response in Carter County The allegations come amid ongoing tornado and flood recovery happening in Carter County “Be careful who you’re letting into your homes and be very careful about what their agenda is and what people want to take.” That’s the warning from Pastor Dave Trucone His Van Buren church serves as a hub for disaster relief when bad weather strikes So we had roofs that need to be tarped and people that were and then we had basements flooded and houses that were flooded with the flash flood,” he said Pastor Trucone says Diane Carter showed up at the church and disrupted their work “She flashed FEMA credentials on her phone and basically said that she was going to take over the recovery She was naming off people who needed help and who needed to be evacuated from their homes,” Trucone explained But Carter’s behavior raised some questions about her intentions “She hadn’t talked to her county Emergency Management working or helping people out of their homes It seemed like a personal agenda,” he said Trucone decided to reach out to FEMA and ask some questions “They immediately reported back to me in five minutes that she had no credentials with them at all Then they called me back again and checked all the outer areas of FEMA that helped FEMA That is when Trucone contacted the authorities and we all are trying to help each other,” said Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell “So this is out of the ordinary for someone to show up and claim something like this.” Sheriff Bradwell says they are now working to figure out why this happened “Sometimes people just do it just to do it scammers like to assert authority by saying they’re FEMA or even law enforcement in order to ascertain more information about the person to create an identity theft situation Sheriff Bradwell said Pastor Trucone did the right thing by questioning Carter “Don’t hesitate to reach out to your law enforcement to ask questions because I guarantee you that your local law enforcement will not tolerate anyone victimizing our citizens in the wake of tragedy,” he said Carter is scheduled to make her first court appearance in this case later in April the sheriff’s office stated in a Facebook post “We will not tolerate anyone who attempts to exploit tragedy.” she is charged with two felonies in connection with a 2023 burglary That case is scheduled to go to trial in May The prosecutor in that case filed a motion on Wednesday The story goes that a certain senator's attention last summer to a certain lady in Market Street was serious and seriously received and that the affair will terminate in a wedding… Image credit: 1834-35 portrait of Harriet Butler in a letter to her dear friend Martin Van Buren It’s a line that wouldn’t be out of place in a Regency novel—or the pages of a 19th-century Gossip Girl diary Harriet playfully teased the future president about his romantic reputation all while revealing the warmth and trust that defined their decades-long friendship Harriet Butler (née Allan) and her husband Benjamin F. Butler were more than mere acquaintances of Martin Van Buren—they were his chosen family Benjamin first became part of Van Buren’s household while clerking at his law office in Hudson Next door on Warren Street lived Harriet and her family early settlers from Nantucket who embodied Hudson’s maritime roots remembered today in the naming of Allen Street Butler would go on to be Attorney General for Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren After Van Buren’s wife Hannah died in 1819 Harriet quietly assumed a role that went far beyond friendship She stepped in to help manage the domestic and social duties that Van Buren’s political life required When he ascended to the presidency in 1837 he had no First Lady to preside over the White House It was Harriet who found him a competent housekeeper to ensure that the Executive Mansion met the expectations of the day—long before his son Abraham married Angelica Singleton When Van Buren retired to his beloved Lindenwald estate in 1841 it was once again Harriet who sprang into action and provisioning to transform the house into a comfortable and dignified residence many of the furnishings admired by visitors to Martin Van Buren National Historic Site can be traced back to Harriet’s thoughtful choices Harriet’s 1824 letter hints at her sparkle: she refers to rumors of Van Buren wooing a “certain lady in Market Street” and cheekily wonders whether a wedding was in the works “I shall only wonder with the wondered,” she wrote Whether she was needling her friend or gently encouraging him to fess up the letter reveals Harriet’s unique place in Van Buren’s world—one of affection If you've strolled through Lindenwald’s halls or admired its decor you’ve encountered Harriet Butler’s enduring influence she represents the quiet at Van Buren State ParkDam Notching to Benefit Local Ecosystem and Community VAN BUREN Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is excited to announce the beginning of the Van Buren State Park Rocky Ford Restoration project this month This initiative marks a major commitment to restoring and revitalizing a cherished natural area within the Portage River watershed through the H2Ohio Initiative The project will address decades-old ecological concerns and enhance the area for the Van Buren community which has long awaited these improvements. The Rocky Ford Restoration project will involve the removal of the aging Van Buren Lake dam and the creation of a dynamic floodplain to support the area's ecosystem By restoring approximately 5,500 linear feet of Rocky Ford Creek and developing a new 45-acre wetland complex "The Van Buren Rocky Ford Restoration is a transformative project that underscores ODNR's commitment to the Van Buren community and to restoring Ohio's natural habitats," said ODNR Director Mary Mertz "We know that Van Buren State Park holds a special place in the community's heart we are not only addressing environmental concerns but also ensuring that future generations will enjoy a cleaner and even more vibrant natural space.”  sediment and nutrient buildup behind the Van Buren Lake dam has impaired water quality affecting local aquatic species and impacting the community's ability to enjoy the lake fully The dam's removal will restore Rocky Ford Creek to its natural state allowing for the safe migration of aquatic life and the natural assimilation of nutrients benefiting the ecosystem and water quality in downstream areas including Lake Erie. By decommissioning the dam and incorporating floodplain and wetland restoration features this project aligns with H2Ohio’s mission to improve water quality and restore Ohio’s natural habitats The restored wetland complex will help naturally sequester nutrients and provide water storage during high-flow events reducing the risk of future impairments. This initiative is more than just an ecological upgrade; it is a commitment to the Van Buren State Park community The Rocky Ford Restoration demonstrates ODNR’s dedication to fulfilling a long-held community vision The enhanced park will offer a thriving habitat for wildlife and new recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application she was the eldest daughter of Shirley Thanks for visiting — A retrial of a murder that gained national attention is underway in Van Buren County Linda Stermer was convicted of killing her husband 15 years ago She spent nearly nine years in prison before the sentence was overturned with an appeals court stating her rights were violated in the first trial jury selection in Linda Stermer's retrial began Stermer is charged with the same crimes as before: premeditated first-degree murder and felony murder in the course of committing arson All charges stem from an incident in January 2007 in which the home Linda Stermer and her husband she was doing laundry in the basement when she heard Todd screaming upstairs and Linda Stermer entered her van to go find help He died at the scene and his blood was later found on the car which investigators say showed that Linda hit her husband Linda Stermer appealed on the basis of misconduct of the prosecutor and ineffective assistance from her counsel at the time: current Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed that the prosecutor in that case disparaged Linda Stermer and misrepresented her testimony saying Getting failed to consult an expert to counter the state's testimony that the fire was arson News Channel 3 will continue to follow this case on our website social media and on air when it moves forward later this week The lessons learned from her grandparents helped the new Van Buren postmaster return to her Van Buren and Crawford County roots “I’m what do they call those… a jack-of-all-trades,” Steward said “My grandpa was very much one of those as well He taught me to do as much as I can and learn as much as I can I’d be someone they can call when they need something it gets me into a lot of trouble because I take on more than I can.”  Steward’s first month in the post office was the Christmas season but Christmas…” Steward sighed deeply before continuing ‘If we can make it through December.’ It becomes a mantra for us We know we will be okay if we can make it to January 1 At least we don’t have the winter weather like the northern states I’ll be out there in heels and a skirt helping When we had those stimulus checks years ago If someone didn’t get their check… we heard about it I don’t want to think about that right now.” Steward has been with the Fort Smith Post Office for 12 years and has been in administration or management for nearly all that time and absorbing all she could learn about how the post office works “I didn’t want to get to the point that I feel like I can’t contribute anything that I’m just going through the same motions every day,” said Steward “My goal was to learn everything I could that day You have to want to be there for people and help them I feel it’s one of my biggest flaws because I want to try to fix every single thing It’s a hard pill to swallow since it’s almost like a sense of failure The worst thing I’ve ever done since I came to this office was to join the Facebook group where the residents complain about the post office.” Steward contacts individuals and tries to help them “I had to find a home and work balance,” said Steward “It’s taken a lot for me to put the post office aside and just let people be mad or upset I’ll come back to it after I spend time with my kids You just pray somebody will give you a little bit of grace while you’re trying.” Steward would joke with her bosses that the post office needs to have a program like they used to for the police where a person would shadow an officer for a day “We’re trying to keep all the mail together when the wind blows We got the wrong name but the right address or the wrong address but the right name,” Steward said and there’s not a lot of grace that gets extended in our direction and justifiably so and they expect us to deliver it correctly “I welcome many of the complaints and any concerns because then I will know what we need to correct so that I can fix that problem.” which celebrates its 250th anniversary this year Folks can almost track their packages in real-time She said it’s a great service and has made a difference “I have two supervisors here in the office who are amazing and they keep me on track because I can squirrel a lot,” said Steward my job is essentially to help them be able to do their job and our carriers’ and clerks' lives are easier I usually handle most of the complaints that aren’t simple fixes.” Steward explained that she had a call earlier with her bosses to justify the hours of her carriers 53 employees work for the Van Buren Post Office and the other half are city and rural carriers for Cedarville The carriers' routes are calculated based on delivering all the mail in eight hours Steward sometimes follows her carriers to make sure they’re safe and she’ll assess the situation and contact animal control if necessary I’m answering questions for the district manager headquarters if something goes wrong,” said Steward “I do the buffering between the supervisors but I can tell you that I’m very much the person who will keep going until I have no more time left in the day someone will poke their head into my office and tell me I should go home—every day handling customers… all the processes continues Wednesday; prosecutors are accusing her of setting her house on fire and killing her husband in 2007 She was in prison for nine years before being released after she was granted a new trial by a federal judge Prospective jurors flowed in and out of the Van Buren County courthouse Wednesday with the bench still not seated well into the afternoon the case already has an audience far outside of Michigan National news programs are setting up in the courtroom including CBS's "48 Hours." The documentary show featured Stermer's case in an episode in 2020 interviewing her as well as each of her five children The retrial will be shot for a future program with one crew member saying its unique circumstances are keeping viewers gripped and who each side blames for that house fire "Something our viewers really love is a story with really interesting forensics," field producer Emily Wichick Hourihane said "This case in particular has some very interesting fire science that we're looking to see how that plays out in court." 2025 is relatively simple: continue to improve what is already working The most visible evidence of that will be when bidding opens in July on a $12 million project to improve the intersection of Highway 59 and Interstate 540 In partnership with the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) We have $3 million in the bank ready to spend,” he said The downtown area will also see what Hurst has termed a “streetscape project” funded by two $1 million grants a Federal Emergency Administration (FEMA) grant will address flooding issues by improving drainage in the area Recent turmoil at the federal level has raised questions about when or if the project may begin “The recent spending halt may have an impact Numerous Van Buren Parks and Recreation department projects are in the works as is discussion about a proposed community center “We are undergoing an update to the parks plan,” said Hurst … COVID disrupted progress on that (community center) We will be determining whether or not to put a community center on the ballot.” the center would be funded by a temporary sales tax Projects from prior years will enjoy use in 2025 and we added a pickleball court,” said Hurst the city’s Field of Dreams Sports Complex has recovered fully from the devastating “two-hundred-year flood” suffered in 2019 We are back to up and running,” said Hurst pointing to frequent use by the high school district and the Boys Club Another measure of recovery is the return of summer baseball and softball tournaments but we have 16 tournaments planned for 2025 I’m really glad to hear that,” said Hurst The city’s partnership with the Van Buren Public School District extends to projects such as adding a grant-funded basketball court to an elementary school schools serve as de facto parks after hours Hurst said projects such as the proposed community center and the basketball court come as a result of public suggestions and participation Oversight of facilities and spending includes citizen commissions “We try to get people to come to our meetings Sometimes it’s difficult to get attendance Citizen participation has made Van Buren a frequent recipient of the Arkansas Municipal League (AML) Volunteer Community of the Year award “We’ve won 30-something times,” said Hurst calling the achievement “an objective way to see that the community really does come together.”
