I cannot deny nor confirm that they are related.” He said Amtrak personnel were looking into it. Asked if there was a brush fire also Our fire marshals are investigating all of that There was brush burning outside of the building so we don’t know if that was the cause of the fire at this time.” and we just want to send a few safety messages and if you do see anything smoldering or burning Asked about a possible transformer explosion “We’re looking into all of that very heavy fire in both the transformer and in this structure.” Woods said they don’t like using water or foam on electrical fires we have to remove the power to the transformer We have to remove power to the catenary lines Catenary lines are the lines you see above the train used for electricity there’s still residual electricity that we have to ground and that’s why it takes so long before we can put water or foam on that fire.” Woods said there were “no injuries whatsoever.” Asked if train travel was affected all train movement is stopped because of the power issues but they were currently doing an assessment to see how much damage there is there is no train movement between New York and New England.” We also spoke to Con Ed and Philip O’Brien said “The fire started on the tracks through Amtrak equipment I don’t know if it was leaves or branches or whatever but it lit up the ground around the tracks The fire went in one direction to a warehouse and that resulted in a 3-alarm fire [1601 Bronxdale Ave] The fire went in the other direction to a Con Edison parking lot as part of its substation there.” O’Brien said there was no effect on Metro North “which doesn’t use that spur.” We’ve reached out to Amtrak for comment and on Wednesday “Initial reports have the brush fire stemming from a transformer at an Amtrak substation An investigation is underway for more details on cause.” We asked for the exact location of the initial spark and he said Read our recent coverage on recent brush fires amid the recent drought watchhere and here View current print edition Click here to read our disclaimer >> Fresh off his victory getting Paul Weiss to kiss his ring, Donald Trump came in hot this weekend with yet ANOTHER executive order targeting the legal profession. creating a new bus turnaround near the Co-op City Station at Erskine Place; and building a new public plaza at the Morris Park station and pedestrian crossing improvements along Eastchester Road A lighting study will help improve access to the Hunts Point Avenue station As part of the Council’s negotiations to approve the plan the Adams administration committed to invest $498.5 million for improvements in the surrounding areas This investment includes almost $119 million for local park and playground renovations $12 million for upgrades for local schools infrastructure improvements to streets and sewers to address flooding concerns and repairs and upgrades for the NYPD’s 49th Precinct creating thousands of new jobs and affordable homes while embracing mass transit all by saying “yes.” The Bronx is saying ‘yes’ to more housing in our backyards and serving as a model to the rest of our city on how to lead from the front With our administration’s neighborhoods plans and our “City of Yes” proposal we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build our way out of this housing shortage and affordability crisis I am calling on our partners in the City Council to join us in this fight and deliver on the promise that working-class families are asking us to do: build more and make this city more affordable.” “Today marks a significant milestone for our city as we celebrate the passage of the Bronx Metro-North Area plan approximately 7,000 homes — including permanent affordable housing — and 10,000 new jobs to the Boogie Down Bronx Our administration was laser focused on delivering a plan that ensures Bronxites will see the most benefit from the coming stations.” “Confronting the housing and affordability crisis in our city requires creating more new homes for New Yorkers The opening of four new Metro-North stations in the Bronx presents a unique opportunity to develop affordable housing and homeownership opportunities while delivering critical infrastructure investments that benefit surrounding neighborhoods for generations This project will have a lasting positive impact for the residents of the Bronx and our entire city and Council Member Marmorato for their partnership to get this major project across the finish line.” By: Chelsea Ramjeawan (Chelsea is the CityLaw intern and a New York Law School student Class of 2025.) and Veronica Rose (Veronica is the Editor of CityLand and a New York Law School graduate This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. including what appeared to be heroin/fentanyl and oxycodone pills and arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court over the weekend They added that members of the New York Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Strike Force uncovered the large cache of narcotics in a basement apartment located to the west of the Parkchester neighborhood of The Bronx A criminal complaint filed by the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor (SNP) charges Torres with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first and third degrees criminal sale of a controlled substance in the first degree criminal possession of a weapon in the second and criminally using drug paraphernalia in the second degree is charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance in the first degree Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) New York division James announced the arrests on Tuesday following an arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court “These arrests illustrate dangerous trends Drug traffickers are simultaneously peddling many different dangerous substances and buyers have no way of knowing what they are getting The ‘Playboy’ and ‘Tesla’ stamps demonstrate another disturbing practice – attractive labels disguising potentially deadly substances.” “These arrests are a result of an undercover operation the DEA New York conducted with our law enforcement partners I commend the quick action of our team in the removal of over 20 pounds of illicit narcotics and a gun off our streets Anytime a firearm is recovered during an operation it is a stark reminder of the dangers we face when targeting these organizations.” The investigation was conducted by Strike Force Group Z-43 comprised of agents and officers from DEA New York Division Torres engaged in narcotics-related conversations with an undercover officer to arrange the sale of two kilograms (over four pounds) of cocaine the undercover agent was at the agreed meeting place Lawrence Avenue to the east of Parkchester and to the south of Van Nest in The Bronx and saw Figueroa on the roof of an adjacent garage The court heard that Figueroa allegedly threw a black bag to Torres who was standing in the outdoor yard of 1460 St and Torres then allegedly met with the undercover in a vehicle Prosecutors said members of Strike Force Group Z-43 subsequently apprehended both arrestees in the yard and recovered the black bag containing two kilograms of cocaine They said the investigation led agents and officers to the basement of 1460 St where they allegedly recovered a 9 mm pistol with an extended magazine and quantities of cocaine from an open box and additional quantities of cocaine from a bathroom agents and officers obtained a court authorized search warrant for the basement apartment at 1460 St Lawrence Avenue and in a bag in a hallway in the apartment they found approximately seven kilograms (nearly 15 pounds) of suspected heroin/fentanyl some of which was packaged in glassines bearing the brand names “Play boy” and “Tesla.” Playboy is an American men’s “lifestyle and entertainment” magazine manufactures and sells battery electric vehicles stationary battery energy storage devices and related products and services who recently bought the social media platform There is no suggestion or indication from federal prosecutors that either Playboy or Tesla or any of their associates or employees were in any way involved in the referenced narcotics operation A red / orange replica of the official “Playboy” logo which is a black bunny head wearing a bowtie does appear on the packaging of at least some of the recovered drugs along with the words “Play boy” Prosecutors said additional kilograms of what appeared to be cocaine and methamphetamine were found in the hallway and in the ceiling and a bag of oxycodone pills was recovered from a filing cabinet in the living room They said the apartment also contained equipment and materials used in packaging heroin/fentanyl “Disrupting this packaging and distribution operation in the Bronx prevented deadly narcotics from reaching the streets and neighborhoods of New York City and Stopping the flow of illegal drugs into our communities remains one of the top priorities of NYPD investigators and our invaluable law enforcement partners and this fight will continue every day until all New Yorkers are safe.” “The arrests in this case are part of a continuing strategy and collaboration between law enforcement agencies to disrupt the flow of dangerous narcotics in New York City and surrounding communities I appreciate the work of our members and our strike force partners in this case We have absolutely zero tolerance for this kind of illegal activity.” The results of DEA laboratory analysis on the seized drugs are pending The for their work on the investigation The NYC Department of City Planning (DCP) is pleased to share Sustainable Communities in the Bronx: Leveraging Regional Rail for Access Growth and Opportunity which presents a vision for a more sustainable and equitable Bronx This report is the culmination of a two-year community engagement process examining the potential for transit- oriented development (TOD) around existing and proposed Metro-North stations in the Bronx DCP identified the potential for growth around underutilized transit resources and built relationships with local organizations and leaders ready to help realize a new vision for the borough The Bronx is currently growing at a rate unseen since the 1940s and is projected to grow by 14% by 2040 the fastest projected growth rate of any borough.  This study makes recommendations that will foster sustainable growth in the borough by expanding transit-oriented development opportunities to create housing affordable at a range of incomes strengthening its position within the city and region.  Eight study areas surrounding existing and planned Metro-North rail stations were selected for evaluation to determine strategic land use and pedestrian realm actions to accomplish these objectives DCP undertook an extensive community outreach process focused on education and implementation.  Because the project study area was geographically dispersed over a large portion of the Bronx DCP developed an array of educational tools such as graphics depicting the elements of successful neighborhood streets and the potential relationships between land use and TOD.  These general tools as well as more targeted site-specific information were used to engage stakeholders within communities for each of the station study areas They provided a common language to help facilitate discussion of objectives and development of strategies DCP held more than 40 community/stakeholder meetings in a variety of formats DCP’s extensive site-specific analyses combined with input gathered through partners and general outreach provided the groundwork for recommendations around each station area The six existing and two proposed Bronx Metro-North station areas include: These station areas were selected based on an evaluation of four key factors:  (1) potential to accommodate future growth and (4) opportunity to improve connections between modes of transit.  The report is divided in two sections: (1) Strategies for TOD around commuter rail in the Bronx The findings are summarized in the following section Report Full Report (27.8 mb) DCP identified a number of common challenges to successfully integrate Metro-North stations into the complex and distinct fabric of Bronx neighborhoods DCP developed a set of general strategies applicable to all study areas within the Bronx Metro-North corridor while developed through studying the eight Metro-North station areas have potential applicability to commuter rail stations locally The strategies are described in four categories as indicated below: (1) LAND USE AND ZONINGA framework for addressing outdated zoning fostering appropriate mixes and densities of uses and bolstering regional centers that will allow Bronx neighborhoods to better capitalize on transit assets.  (2) WALKABILITY Best practices to improve safety and walkability of neighborhood streets that connect Bronx residents with jobs (3) INTERMODAL CONNECTIVITY & COMMUTER RAIL STATIONS Improvements to create seamless connections between Metro-North and other modes of transit will provide greater accessibility for Bronx residents and local and regional workers (4) RAIL-ADJACENT LOTSIImprovements to create seamless connections between Metro-North and other modes of transit will provide greater accessibility for Bronx residents and local and regional workers The study includes individual area studies for each station It focuses on challenges and opportunities to strengthen these areas through targeted regulatory changes and physical improvements and it offers for each area a set of recommendations developed in concert with stakeholders The University Heights station sits on the Fordham Road Corridor between an undeveloped portion of the Harlem River Waterfront and the Major Deegan Expressway The area has the potential for significant housing and retail growth that would open up the waterfront to the community; however its potential is significantly limited by barriers to access The Melrose station area played a key role in the dynamic history of the South Bronx and has been the focus of significant and successful public investment where more than 3,500 new units of affordable housing have been created in the last fifteen years with significant additional units planned Despite the area’s assets and recent revitalization the community lacks a cohesive urban fabric The Morris Heights Metro-North station and its surrounding features are isolated from the community largely by topographical changes and a major highway There is an opportunity to increase usage of the park and station as well as increase access to the Harlem River Waterfront and River Park Towers housing development The Tremont Metro-North station is located along the re-emerging East Tremont Avenue commercial corridor.  The area was recently rezoned to promote housing and retail growth; however and inconsistent pedestrian paths result in a disjointed corridor The Williams Bridge Metro-North station sits along a busy corridor and is near a major medical facility that is one of the Bronx’s largest employers A recent rezoning provides opportunity for additional growth and ridership poor visibility and connectivity present challenges to achieving a strong mixed-use retail corridor The Fordham station area is home to a number of regional attractions and institutions including Fordham University and one of the busiest retail corridors in the city Fordham Road.  With high ridership today it has potential to become a stronger regional hub of activity MTA Metro-North Railroad has developed an overall concept to provide additional regional rail service by linking its east-of-Hudson service directly to Penn Station It includes two proposed stations on the West Side of Manhattan This study examines two of the proposed Bronx station areas with the greatest potential for long-term transit-oriented growth The proposed Parkchester/Van Nest station is located along East Tremont Avenue between the Parkchester planned community and Van Nest neighborhood The proposed station will help establish a new center for these neighborhoods but currently it is characterized by inactive uses and a general lack of pedestrian amenities.  As the home to a number of large professional institutions and planned developments Morris Park is a regional center for employment and education The proposed station currently lacks pedestrian infrastructure and commercial uses to support the institutions’ needs.  The new station would help bolster the area’s status as a regional employment center and be an asset to the community Throughout this study DCP built strong partnerships with stakeholders who are rooted in these communities.  These partnerships have expanded opportunities for implementation of recommendations identified in this report existing efforts have already jump-started action.  To realize the full potential of recommended improvements Together the application of these strategies will create a more livable Bronx by increasing access to jobs and neighborhood amenities providing mixed-income housing options for residents and creating more sustainable communities surrounding Bronx Metro-North stations For more information on the Sustainable
