a rural stretch of farmland could soon give way to new subdivision
Some residents say there’s no need for change
but developers say the growth is long overdue
It’s quiet along Old Fort Bayou Road — country roads
But longtime resident Jack Stokes says that peace is under pressure
“We don’t want our country life turned into a big neighborhood housing project,” said Stokes
Stokes is one of dozens of homeowners pushing back against a proposal to rezone more than 100 acres of farmland into a suburban-style subdivision
Developer Kenneth Jones says the plan is designed to blend with the landscape — not erase it
“We’re preserving almost 50% of the site — about 45% of the site — which will be really nice for the residents,” said Jones
preservation areas where they can walk and have trails and stuff like that.”
Jones points to a regional housing shortage
low inventory and recent infrastructure upgrades as signs the area is ready
“There’s a real lack of land that’s for sale
But neighbors say the project doesn’t match the pace or purpose of their rural community
Emily Theriot says it’s not just about homes — it’s about values
There has been no substantial increase in jobs
shopping or school capacity at Vancleave to justify a need
It would not be in harmony with the rest of the neighborhood.”
Laurie Claxton urged county commissioners to think long term
It means a lot to us that have lived there our whole lives.”
the decision is about more than zoning — it’s about what kind of future Vancleave is building
The Jackson County Planning Commission has recommended the rezoning
The final decision now goes to the Board of Supervisors

UConn Law Professor Anna VanCleave has been selected as a Bellow Scholar
a program run by the Association of American Law Schools’ Section on Clinical Legal Education’s Committee on Lawyering in the Public Interest
the program recognizes and supports the empirical research projects of clinical law professors who increase the quality of justice in marginalized communities
The selection process is highly competitive and VanCleave’s project was unanimously supported by the committee
“I’m so honored to be part of the Bellow Scholars program,” said VanCleave
director of UConn Law’s Criminal Defense Clinic

It will seek to find how often defense lawyers are filing motions for bail modification
It will also assess how well the existing procedures anticipate who will be deemed a risk to public safety at the conclusion of the case

South Jones starting pitcher Dylan Causey fires a strike against the War Eagles
South Jones swept Wayne County in the first round of the 5A state playoffs
which hosts SJ Friday night at 7 in the first game of a best-of-3 series
This will be a rematch of last year’s South State Championship series
The second game is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m
Micah Coutta paced the Braves to a series-clinching victory both on the mound and at the plate
including a three-run home run in the first inning
while pitching all six innings and striking out eight
Coutta said after struggling at the plate this season
it has been great to find his swing in the playoffs
but I think I was able to do well at the plate tonight
Head coach Mason Strickland was full of praise after Coutta’s performance in game two
“Coutta has performed way beyond his expectations,” Strickland said
“He’s stepped up in a massive way for this team
his pitching and at the plate in the last two games
But I’m more proud of the attitude and the leadership he shows to the young guys along with the rest of this senior class
They have taken ownership of this thing and right now I’m just flying along with them.” Coutta credited his faith
teammates and Strickland for his performance
has helped me through pitching and all this stuff
Butler was pleased with his at-bats and is excited about what might come next for the Braves
“I just got up there and was looking to hit doubles
and I just hit the ball well tonight,” Butler said
“I think we’re going to go pretty far this year
I trust my teammates and believe in them.”
and were led by Dylan Causey’s five and 1/3 innings and seven strikeouts
The game was tied at 1-1 until the Braves put up four runs in the fourth and never looked back
“It was kind of a weird day with the rain out yesterday,” Causey said of Game 1
Wayne County head coach Kody Lancaster said he was proud of his team despite the disappointing end to the season
“I’m extremely proud of this bunch,” Lancaster said
What the box score won’t reflect is that we’re playing six freshmen and sophomores
but we had two of our starters out with injuries
All in all I’m proud and happy about what’s coming here in the years to come

Severe storms moved across the area bringing heavy rain to portions of the area over the weekend
Flood waters caused damage in the area warranting water rescues for other residents according to Michael Ryan
Had to get rescue from around the corner here
“The stuff that I saw like when your house is almost under water
resident Cynthia Shields shared and compared the flooding in certain areas to the damage caused by Katrina and says some things you just can’t prepare for
one local resident was pleased by the community’s response to these storms and is offering help for those victims
“Lot of people lost their belongings
we want everyone to know we’re here for them and our hearts go out to them
The fact that the community is coming together is huge and I think it speaks a lot for South Mississippi that we have a tight community and we’re willing to help everybody.”
The impacts in these areas will be felt for some time
but the help from others will assist in recovery efforts
WXXV will stay on top of this story as those Vancleave residents and others across South Mississippi affected by these storms begin to build back
Winning a State Championship is the ultimate goal for high school athletes
and that’s the goal for this week’s WXXV Student Athlete of the Week.Introducing Vancleve high schoo’s very own
A dual-sport athlete at Vancleave high school
senior Hunter Harper has given the blue and white his all when it comes to the gridiron and the diamond
Harper rushed over 900 yards leading the Bulldogs to their 16th playoff appearance
but we had a good season and having one last ride with my friends is always fun,” said Hunter Harper
Harper was the ace of the club that led Vancleave to their second State Championship in school history
He said the school has never won back to back state titles
but that’s not stopping them from trying
“There’s a little pressure but not really
It’s just being out here and having fun with the guys,” said Harper
All of us have been playing since we were little
We’ve always had success and I just love these guys
We’re just going to keep going and try our best to win it all and have fun along the way.”
If Harper continues to do what he’s done all season long
“The V” is set to have quite a run this playoff season
Harper has a 5-1 record with 39 strikeouts and an 1.80 ERA
In the batters box he has a .384 batting average
Harper also hit his third homerun on Tuesday against Laurel
who they recently beat handily in a double header 12-3 and 14-0
With this type of regional performance this close to playoffs
Harper says it gives them confidence at just the right time
Momentum is a big thing in high school baseball
so going into the playoffs with some momentum is really good,” Harper said
Whether this year ends with a second ring or not
Harper is thankful for his time at Vancleave and the leadership qualities it’s given him
“I’ve been here since as long as I can remember and it’s just great being able to come back here and everyone knowing your name and everything
“I just feel like trying to be a leader for these guys out here
I want the little kids and younger guys to be able to look at me and think maybe that’s what they want to be when they grow up.”
Best of luck to Harper and the rest of the Bulldogs as they begin their playoff campaign next week

There’s usually a guard rail there that’s about two feet high and that’s already underwater
I was planning on walking all the way in there but I got about waist deep and it was too dangerous.”

and they told WXXV they would be there as long as it took to help those in need
