Orange County Sheriff Bobby Smith tells KFDM/Fox 4 News his deputies received a call at about 12:20 a.m
Sunday reporting an accident involving side-by-side vehicles in a canal near South Terry Road and Concord Street
The Sheriff's Office deputies saw a side-by-side halfway submerged in water in a nearby canal south of the roadway
had been traveling westbound on the canal when the driver attempted to go around a hole in the ground and the side-by-side slipped into the canal on its right side
Hunter jumped out of a side-by-side into the water to attempt to stop the side-by-side from falling into the canal
The side-by-side fell into the canal on top of Hunter
He was pinned under the water for several minutes before he was removed from underneath the side-by-side

Vidor — A former Vidor ISD Police Department officer is jailed on a charge of kidnapping a 12-year-old girl from her home and taking her to Lake Charles before bringing her back to Vidor
Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll tells KFDM/Fox 4 News that Ethan Majors
the Vidor Police Department was notified of an individual picking up and transporting a 12-year-old girl to Lake Charles
The child was returned to her home the same morning
the Vidor Police Department executed an arrest warrant on Majors
Chief Carroll says Majors is accused of leaving for Lake Charles with the girl on Saturday night
This is a joint investigation with the Lake Charles Police Department and is ongoing
Vidor ISD spokesman Bryan Brassard tells KFDM that Majors had two stints with the district
The first one was at Oak Forest Elementary School from January 29
He was re-hired in June of 2024 to work at Vidor Junior High School and he resigned October 4 to work for another law enforcement agency
Brassard tells KFDM that the district has not been informed of any other allegations of unlawful acts involving the suspect and any other students

Mary Helen co-owned and served as secretary for Yellott Roofing alongside her beloved husband
Her life was marked by her deep love for music

This love for music also extended into her work with children’s ministries
where she spent countless hours nurturing young minds and inspiring joy and faith in the next generation.

Connie Jo Varela-Fontenot and husband Michael of Kountze
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her son Gregorio Varela Jr.
parents and four brothers and four sisters
Her memory lives on in her family and friends who were blessed by her kindness
passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday
Barbara was a longtime resident of Vidor who dedicated her life to her family and her passions
Barbara was a devoted homemaker who found joy in sewing
Whether she was painting a cherished piece or preparing a comforting meal
Barbara cherished time spent with her family and embraced her role as "Mom" to all who knew her
She was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers
Barbara is survived by her loving children: Joe Headley and his wife Becky of Iowa
Louisiana; Jennifer Merrell and her husband Kenneth of Vidor
Texas; James Headley and his wife Anita of Center
Texas; grandchildren Brian and Ginger Vernon
and Zachary and Alicia Jones; as well as great-grandchildren BJ Vernon
and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her
passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday
where he built a life centered around faith
A devoted member of the Vidor Church of Christ
Joe not only worshiped there but helped build the very church that became a cornerstone of his life
He was the proud owner and operator of Collins Gulf service station
where he worked tirelessly to provide for his family
From picking cotton at just seven years old to logging in Cherokee County
Joe knew the value of hard work and carried that ethic throughout his life
and he took care of them until the very end
He cherished the simple joys of life—sitting outdoors with a cup of coffee
watching the birds and embracing nature’s beauty
He loved nothing more than gathering around a campfire with his grandkids
weaving tales that showcased his gift for storytelling
Joe had a knack for bringing laughter into every room and was known for his quick wit and signature humor
claimed to have invented the "Texas Handshake," and carried the spirit of his home state in everything he did
he found comfort in listening to Bible tapes

Joe Elmer Collins was a man of strong faith
but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him
where she built a life centered around love
Terry worked as an LVN with Burton Hospice
where she brought comfort and compassion to many during their final days
Her gentle spirit and strong heart made her a natural caregiver
She had a deep love for spending time with her family—her children and grandchildren truly were the center of her world
Terry also found great joy in flower gardening
nurturing beauty in every space she touched

Terry also leaves behind her cherished siblings
Stephanie Catlett and husband Mike of Hot Springs Village
CA; as well as 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren
all of whom brought her immense pride and joy
and Allen Griffith; her parents Harry Budd Roof and Mary Gallion; her grandparents Fred Roof
and Francis Eldridge; and her great-grandmother Emma Dove Love
Terry’s love was rooted deep and wide
and strength lives on in those who knew and loved her
passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday
earning the love and respect of everyone who knew him
Windell proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps
He was baptized in the Baptist church and held his faith close to his heart
He dedicated many years of service to the Orange County Drainage District as a highly skilled heavy equipment operator
His craftsmanship extended beyond machinery—he was also a talented woodworker whose skill with his hands was admired by many
Windell had a deep love for fishing and hunting
and he was as comfortable on the water as he was in the woods
He won several fishing tournaments over the years and even helped sponsor the Boys’ Haven Fishing Tournament
sharing his passion with the next generation
He was a natural gardener and a devoted animal lover
always tending to his pets and plants with great care
The two shared 63 wonderful years of marriage
He is survived by his loving wife Charlene Evans; his daughter Windy Dee Evans; his son John Wayne Evans; his brother Danny Evans; and his beloved nieces and nephews Darren
