among the institutions facing financial adjustments the university has been directed to set aside another 5% into a state reserve account Vincennes University’s public television and radio stations Vigo and Willow Streets in Vincennes allows space for escorts of large farm equipment heading into the city The need for the restriction stems from ongoing INDOT construction projects which eliminated other options for routing the oversized vehicles City Engineer John Sprague told the Board of Public Works on Monday that over the past weekend parked cars created several close calls for farm escorts The order is expected to remain in place for several weeks City officials are working with Rivet Junior-Senior High School and the nearby church to limit disruptions as both are located along the affected route Sprague also noted that a similar restriction may be needed again when work begins on Vigo Street between Sixth and the Memorial Bridge The City of Vincennes has awarded construction bids for its new firefighter training center though no start date for the work has been set The Board of Works approved four contracts Monday including $48,480 to Hendrickson Concrete and Construction for foundation work Wabash Utilities received three contracts: nearly $41,000 for storm and sanitary lines and just under $11,000 for building utilities The lowest site-clearing bids were rejected with that work expected to be done in-house The center is being funded by the state and is part of a statewide effort to expand live fire training opportunities In other action in city government on Monday the Vincennes City Council has unanimously approved the third and final reading of an ordinance which vacates a portion right-of-way on Buntin Street The change will allow for proper setback requirements related to a building project and is not expected to negatively impact city infrastructure The council previously held a public hearing on the ordinance with no public comments The measure passed 6–0 in each of its three readings the Vincennes City Council passed the first reading of Ordinance 6-2025 which proposes changing the zoning of a property at 1420 Hart Street from C1 commercial to R1 residential Council members noted the property was previously residential and that the change aligns with surrounding zoning That ordinance now heads to the Area Plan Commission before returning to the council for further readings A new fire training center in Vincennes took another step forward on Monday It was June of last year when it was announced that Vincennes and Knox County were set to receive a new state-of-the-art firefighter training facility as part of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s Hub-and-Spoke training model The Vincennes Fire Department and Vincennes Township Fire Department were selected to jointly receive the new facility The expansion of centers aims to bring live fire training closer to firefighters across the state eliminating so-called “training deserts.” Monday night the Vincennes Board of Works received five bids for construction of the facility The bids included five alternates for various parts of the building The bids were taken under advisement and will be reviewed by the city engineer’s office before being awarded The Vincennes Board of Works also approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Interfact who will install cameras at six railroad crossings across the city The cameras will monitor crossings at 2nd and 15th Streets as well as Main motorists can check the app to see which crossings are open Each camera costs $1,000 to install and $500 a year to maintain The $9,000 project is funded from the city’s existing budget Mayor Joe Yochum commented that the plan was first discussed a couple of years ago Officials say the system is already in use in Muncie and could help reduce traffic delays from long train stops It's now official: Vincennes Lincoln High School will have a new conference affiliation "The Alices will be a great addition to the conference with their long tradition in athletics and great community support," the conference said in a statement "We look forward to a long partnership in the WIC." Vincennes Lincoln has attempted to leave the SIAC in recent years despite only being a member since 2020 A move to the Pocket Athletic Conference was voted down in 2022 The Alices have finished eighth each school year in the all-conference standings and haven't won a conference championship in any sport More: What would Vincennes Lincoln leaving mean for the SIAC? Two options in play The Vincennes Community School Corporation unamiously voted on Monday to apply for membership to the WIC It will leave the SIAC with nine member schools: Bosse The conference has reached out to other schools for expansion allowing one nonconference game in football Should Vincennes Lincoln remain a member through next year it would play a full conference schedule in every sport Any change for the SIAC would begin in 2026-27 with that timeline Cascade and Indian Creek) are reportedly leaving the WIC following this school year Two others (Brown County and Cloverdale) are backing out in football only Vincennes Lincoln High School is attempting to leave the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference The Vincennes Community School Corporation made the decision on Monday in its board of school trustees meeting the board chose to apply for admittance to the Western Indiana Athletic Conference which may include the end of the 2024-25 school year The Alices had been a member of the SIAC since 2020 following the closure of the Big Eight The SIAC would have nine members should Vincennes leave: Bosse More: SIAC football teams live in a bubble by only playing each other. Will that ever change? "This would give us a fresh start and a chance to rebuild a culture of success within Vincennes Lincoln athletics," Lincoln Athletics Director Chris Lancaster said during the meeting Vincennes Lincoln had been on the verge of leaving in recent years. The Courier & Press reported in January 2022 that school officials were exploring an exit due to on-field struggles in conference games Vincennes Lincoln attempted to join the Pocket Athletic Conference the Alices would join a conference in a state of flux The WIC is currently comprised of Brown County Cascade and North Putnam) are joining the Indiana Crossroads Conference next year Indian Creek is also leaving after this school year Brown County and Cloverdale are backing out in football only Vincennes Lincoln has not won any SIAC championships since rejoining – it was previously a member from 1936-1980 – but had become more competitive in recent years Football finished in a five-way tie for second in 2023 It had finished eighth each season in the SIAC all-sports standings "This isn’t us running from a challenge," Lincoln Principal Shea Duke said during the meeting "It’s finding the right challenge for the students that we have That is difficult to keep students positive and engaged "people are willing to come forward and take care of that for us." During the meeting administrators said a lack of success in the SIAC created a negavite culture within Vincennes athletics The coaches voted 11-5 to find a new conference with similar community values "I think we’re an outlier in the SIAC," Lancaster "The city schools of Evansville kind of operate under one umbrella It’s not a community-based type of situation." Flood stage at Petersburg and Hazelton is 16 feet The Wabash River at Vincennes is forecast to reach 21.8 feet today and then begin to fall Conference realignment is returning to Southwestern Indiana The Vincennes Community School Corporation voted on Monday for Lincoln High School to seek admission to the Western Indiana Athletic Conference This move would come less than five years after the school joined the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference in the fall of 2020 the SIAC would be left with nine schools: Bosse More: How SW Indiana high school teams are rolling with the punches following winter storms What would Vincennes Lincoln's departure mean for the conference Nearly all sports would switch to an eight-game conference schedule for sports It would allow one non-conference game each in football opening the door for a number of intriguing matchups with the PAC One example would be the possible return of the Goal Post Trophy between Jasper and Southridge Scenario two: expansionThe SIAC has informally reached out to a number of schools since December to gauge potential interest The current conference bylaws do not have a maximum membership cap This would create the need for two divisions in football with multiple nonconference games or a rotating unbalanced schedule if the total membership exceeds 10 "(Vincennes Lincoln) feels like moving to a different conference is better for their school community," said SIAC president John Skinner change could come for the largest athletic conference in Southwestern Indiana Vincennes University will launch an
