The Belgian was by no means a popular choice to take over from Thomas Tuchel
but he's done a fine job in his first year at the Allianz Arena
He just had the misfortune to play for serial losers at club and international level
and join Bayern at a time of tremendous turmoil at the Allianz Arena
there were serious doubts over whether they would reclaim their German crown from Leverkusen this season
given last summer's hunt for a worthy successor to Thomas Tuchel did not go according to plan at all
while Xabi Alonso's men were coming off the back of a undefeated double
Kompany was by no means the club's first-choice to put Bayern back on their perch. His appointment puzzled a lot of people; Sean Dyche still can't get his head around it! But Kompany has silenced the critics with a commanding title triumph
How did Kompany go from relegation with Burnley to Bundesliga glory with Bayern in less than a year

Cardinal Vincent Nichols will be locked inside the Sistine Chapel and must vote on who he wants to elect as the next pope
Apart from worrying about who to choose as the next spiritual leader for 1.4 billion Catholics around the world
was also not sure how he would get out of bed at the right time in the morning once a blackout is imposed on all electronic communications between the cardinals and the outside world

With Bayern Munich on the verge of regaining the Bundesliga title
head coach Vincent Kompany is keeping talk of celebrations on ice
His team are preparing for Saturday's Bundesliga clash at fifth-placed RB Leipzig where they can clinch a record-extending 34th title
Kompany's side hold an eight-point lead over last season's unbeaten champions Bayer Leverkusen
but even matching Leverkusen's result at Freiburg on Sunday would be enough for Bayern to secure the title
Vincent Kompany is on the verge of winning the Bundesliga title during his first season in charge. Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images"We want to win tomorrow and be champions," Kompany told a news conference on Friday
I think they'll now play with full energy again
"Teams make radical decisions against Bayern ..
I think we will get the best version of Leipzig as an opponent
Bayern's top scorer Harry Kane, looking to land a long-awaited first title of his career, is suspended but Kompany said the striker will likely travel with the team
"Harry is one of our best players mentally
Kane has scored 36 goals and registered 12 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions for Bayern this season
"I have not seen anything in training that even hints he is not even playing on Saturday
"Maybe some guys will come with [us] to Leipzig ..
Harry probably won't pass up the opportunity to come."
In related news, defender Eric Dier has decided to leave Bayern at the end of the season following the expiration of his deal
sporting director Christoph Freund said on Friday
The 31-year-old former England international joined Bayern on loan in January last year after a decade-long stay at Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur
A consistent hand at the helm has led Bayern back to its winning ways
The coaching carousel at Bayern Munich has been a rotating door for the past ten years. Pep Guardiola was the last manager to manage the club for more than 24 months. That is ludicrous considering that list includes four Champions League winners: Carlo Ancelotti
Bayern was rejected by a slew of coaches before finalizing a deal with Vincent Kompany
Kompany was coming off a relegation season with Burnley
Kompany has his fair share of flaws but he has clearly unified the locker room
“The basis of success in football is that the team follows the coach - without blindly following him,” said Director of Sport Max Eberl (via @iMiaSanMia)
“It was about combining character traits - that a coach fits the club
I 100% feel that the dressing room is following Vinnie
But that doesn’t mean that we’re just hugging each other.”
Kompany’s steady hand has dramatically reduced the leak of information to the media from within the organization
There are still disagreements but everything is open and respectful
Here’s to hoping Kompany can survive another 14 months to break the curse and make the Bayern gig attractive again to elite coaches and players

May 1 at the Shelby County Instructional Services Center
the board unanimously approved a motion to name the baseball field at Vincent Middle High School as “Kenny Wright Field.”
The new name is presented in honor of former Vincent baseball coach Kenny Wright

as he knows him on a personal level which made the moment special
“What I’d like everyone to know is how much this means to me to be able to present this to coach Wright,” Brooks said
“I met coach Wright as a 23-year-old young kid head coach and didn’t know what I was doing
he and his wife Jane… I’m just appreciative of so much that I learned from coach and so thankful for the opportunities that we had together as friends to impact children’s lives and kids’ lives
“I’m just grateful for his journey in Shelby County Schools
but more so in our beloved Vincent community
This is a special honor for me to be able to present this.”
the board presented three teachers the Owens-Young Award
which spotlights teachers who show exemplary integration and leadership with technology in the classroom
The award honors Denise Owens and Michael Young
who were both former Shelby County Schools employees that passed away
but were innovative in those areas during their careers
This year’s winners of the Owens-Young Award were Krista Bender of Oak Mountain Intermediate School
Heather English of Chelsea Middle School and Tamika Whitt of Calera High School
Each teacher will receive a $1,000 check to be used in their classroom towards the purchase of any technology advancement
The board also approved a bid for CNP smallwares

His experience as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers has certainly resembled that of a box of chocolates
Gabe Vincent must be a fan of Robert Zemeckis' award-winning movie Forrest Gump
After a strong 2023 playoff run with the Miami Heat
Rob Pelinka and company watched the former Heat guard average 12.7 points
The defensive intensity which aided Miami's run to the NBA Finals had to be seen as an attractive addition for Los Angeles
$33 million deal by the Lakers in the 2023 offseason
that was a decision the front office regrets by now
2023-24 was an injury-riddled campaign for Vincent
the Lakers guard should be afforded a relative pass for that regular season and postseason
The 2024-25 season was an absolute rollercoaster when it came to the Vincent experience. After a slow start, the veteran point guard had quietly started to turn heads and vindicate the Lakers for handing him his current contract
the streaky shooter chosen the worst of times to cool off and become a liability
Vincent's offensive production was quickly fading
the bench guard had averaged 4.5 points and 1.2 assists per game
while posting a horrible 32.3 field goal percentage and an equally tragic 25.9 3-point percentage clip
With that kind of lousy production leading up to the NBA Playoffs, Vincent quickly proved himself unreliable against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The sixth-year pro was even one of the players deemed untrustworthy by JJ Redick in the second half of the Game 4 embarrassment
Vincent finished the 2025 NBA Playoffs averaging 2.8 points
connecting on 35.7 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc
It is remarkable that those shooting percentages are actually improvements from his regular-season stretch in April
With the Lakers yearning for depth, shooting, and defense off the bench, it should not come as a big surprise to see Vincent's contract dangled in trade rumors with the hope of an upgrade
The backup point guard should theoretically have the skill set and ability to satisfy those needs
the reality has not matched theory in this regard

Welcome to the end of the Poetry Challenge — the last stanza of our five-day adventure in verse. (If you missed the beginning or middle, you can catch up here)
We hope you are feeling reasonably merry and not unduly tired
at an elementary school not far from where Edna St
Students there were invited to write down a poem and carry it around in their pockets
If they ran into somebody who was in urgent need of a poem
You never know when that’s going to happen
We’ve made space in our busy days and our buzzing minds to carry around a bundle of couplets
Some of us may have inflicted “Recuerdo” on other people
But the question nonetheless arises: Now that you have this poem
suggested by our young friend and implied in Millay’s last lines
a souvenir offered by the poet to whomever might have been with her on that ferry ride and
impulsive act of giving that wraps up the night can stand as a metaphor for poetry itself
respond with something that goes far beyond simple charity
a poem acquires meaning only insofar as it is shared
since everyone who acquires it will understand it — will use it — in their own way
Yours to treasure: to recite under your breath
Human memory is a curious thing — variable
Some mental storage spaces are neatly sorted and cross-indexed
Others are more like kitchen drawers overflowing with odds and ends: candle stubs
takeout menus from restaurants that shut down during Covid
Some of “Recuerdo” may start to go blurry — which one of us ate the pear
— but that slippage is anticipated by the poem itself
It’s not a comprehensive accounting of everything that happened
a skein of especially vivid associations and impressions
Your brain may process the poem in a similar way
the words “a bucketful of gold” might pop into your head
The rhymes and alliterations you labored over this week have become part of your verbal muscle memory
And that repeating first couplet — which comprises six of the poem’s 18 lines and occupied the first day of this challenge — will surely jingle in your pocket for a long time to come
poet Watch her full readingWhether you recite the whole thing every day or pick up scraps of it every now and then
That might be as much poetry as you require
Her “Collected Poems” fill more than 700 pages
Or you might prefer her slimmer individual collections
A “Recuerdo” algorithm could just as well point you toward poems about boats or New York
toward lyrics about regretting the dawn or seizing the day
It lives through intuitive leaps and improbable inferences
uncanny connections between common experience and your own imagination
Every poem is its own recommendation engine
and every reader will find a perfectly idiosyncratic way of following it
First, though, let us know how you did. Did you learn it? Would you read it for us? We hope you’ll share your thoughts and suggestions with us below
And we hope that further poetic voyages are in store

first-year graduate student in pharmacology
discusses his poster about the role cholesterol plays in prostate cancer progression
Vincent du Vigneaud Symposium co-chairs Jian Zheng and Tzippora Chwat-Edelstein
The Griffis Faculty Club buzzed with excitement as doctoral students from the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences presented their research
faculty and alumni to the 44th annual Vincent du Vigneaud Symposium on April 24
the all-day symposium showcased more than 120 projects and embodied the intellectual vibrancy of the Weill Cornell community
“Every year, the symposium gives us a chance to really come together as a school to learn about what Weill Cornell can do as a whole community,” said third-year graduate student Jian Zheng from the Xiaolan Zhao lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
The poster presentations and talks spanned the seven graduate programs from neuroscience to pharmacology and more. “It is inspirational for the graduate school community to see the passion and dedication of our students for their research,” said Dr. Randi Silver
associate dean academic affairs of the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences
This year included a poster from Weill Cornell’s newest doctoral program in population health sciences
originally from Poland with an undergraduate degree from Kenyon College in Ohio
chose to study at Weill Cornell because of the diverse subject areas the program offers
passive data from cell phones to help develop better mental health interventions
time spent at home and time spent in conversations
can be inaccurate because smartphones turn their sensors on and off
To counter this, Brylka is developing and testing an algorithm that cleans up the data, improving accuracy. The presentation earned Brylka the symposium’s first-year student poster award. “I am honored to win the prize; it’s completely unexpected,” he said. “It was a valuable experience to share my work and talk to so many new people who stopped by to learn about my poster.” The research was conducted with Dr. Samprit Banerjee
associate professor of biostatistics in population health sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine
Sebastian Brylka in population health sciences won the first-year student poster award
the symposium provides a forum for students to formally present their work to faculty and postdoctoral judges with the top presenters earning coveted du Vigneaud Prizes
which will be awarded at the Weill Cornell Graduate School convocation next month
Each judge is assigned four to five posters in their area of research to discuss with the presenters and evaluate. Dr. Samantha Keil
said she volunteered to be a judge because she likes the mentoring aspect of the symposium
“I have a neuroscience background in a clinical setting across a few disease modalities,” she said
“I think it helps the students to talk to someone with a neuroscience background when presenting about the field.”
Graduate student Julio Mejia (left) discusses his poster
Several students traveled from Houston Methodist where they are conducting research while taking virtual Weill Cornell graduate classes
Julio Mejia said he looks forward to his annual trips to New York City for the Vincent du Vigneaud Symposium and program retreats
He presented his poster on spinal cord injuries and hopes his research will lead to new treatments in the future
“I like the balance of being at Houston Methodist
which has an emphasis on translational science
with the strong background in basic research that Weill Cornell gives us,” said Mejia
He also appreciated the symposium’s low-pressure environment that has helped him build the communication skills crucial to conveying his research
said she felt a sense of accomplishment after months of behind-the-scenes planning
“It’s wonderful having a room full of people talking and interacting about science,” she said
“It was also gratifying to see how excited people are to present and share their research.”
This year’s symposium featured a keynote address from Dr
professor of biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Bartel would appeal to a wide audience with his impressive research on RNA regulation that spans different disciplines,” Chwat-Edelstein said
“He comes from academia but has connections to industry
which many students are interested in also.”
Bartel studies how cells control which genes are turned on or off—specifically through tiny molecules called microRNAs
This fine-tuned control can "silence" certain genes by blocking their ability to be effectively translated into proteins
His research findings shed light on problems with RNA regulation that can lead to diseases like cancer
The day closed with a mixer where graduate students and alumni who have gone on to work in academia and industry
“The symposium provides an opportunity for students and faculty to see the breadth of research being undertaken and the enormous promise of our students as the next generation of research leaders,” said Dr. Barbara Hempstead
dean of the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences
Nobel laureate and former chair of the Department of Biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medicine
who was passionate about education and student research

Yesterday we put our heads down to look closely at Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “Recuerdo” — at the words and syllables and even individual letters that make it a poem. (If you’re just joining us, this is the third day of our Poetry Challenge. There’s plenty of time to catch up, but you may want to start on Day 1.)
Those words are about something; they come from somewhere; they belong to someone
we find ourselves in New York City in one of its legendary eras
in the company of one of its great characters
“Recuerdo” is a quintessential New York poem
not only because it happens to be about a popular form of public transportation between two of the city’s island boroughs
This all-night boat ride is a great urban adventure
And perhaps only Millay could have turned it into literature
Millay was a fixture of the city’s literary and political bohemia
counting many of its best-known artists and intellectuals among her friends and lovers
eminently quotable snippets of rhymed gossip — pulse with the dynamism and attitude of the modern city
taking in sights and sounds that are still ubiquitous more than a century later
novelist Watch her full readingNobody has time for the daily newspaper
actor Watch his full readingExhaustion nips at the heels of delight; the ferries and subways never stop running
in 1892 and grew up mostly in nearby Camden
in what a biographer called “the smallest house in the poorest part” of that seaside mill town
whose mother couldn’t afford to send her to college
attracted the attention of a wealthy patron who raised the money to send her to Vassar
Millay became notorious on campus for her love affairs with men and women
her brilliance and her disregard for the rules
she published her first book of poems and moved to Greenwich Village
streaking like a comet through Manhattan’s creative scene
“A Few Figs From Thistles” (1920) became a touchstone of its era
The four lines of “First Fig” catch the heedless
headlong spirit of New York in the Jazz Age:
It can be hard for a 21st-century reader to grasp just how famous these poems made her
winning prizes and garnering appreciative reviews in little magazines
She was a young phenom who grew into a wildly popular artist and a durable celebrity
At some point around the end of World War I
she may have spent a night riding the Staten Island Ferry
possibly in the company of the Nicaraguan poet Salomón de la Selva
But whether or not “Recuerdo” is based on a real-life event
it breathes the air of reality — the sounds
smells and sights of a city with the unique power to tire you out and fill you with joy
poet Watch her full readingThe poem is in good company
beckoning poets of the past and future to join it on deck
Millay’s criss-crossing of the harbor invokes Walt Whitman
whose “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” published in 1856

And you that shall cross from shore to shore years hence are more to me
Walt Whitman, “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”
Whitman is talking to Millay’s future nocturnal passengers, and to the rhymers and dreamers who would populate the metropolis in centuries to come. To Hart Crane, who hymned “the harp and altar” of the Brooklyn Bridge
There’s a great New York poem for every light on Broadway
Another one is Sara Teasdale’s “Broadway.”
“This night is ours” may be the perfect distillation of New York as a poetic state of mind — an anticipation of “Recuerdo.” The city that never sleeps is an experience to be shared
we’ve translated that experience into pictures

Bayern Munich’s 3-3 Bundesliga draw with Rasenballsport Leipzig was one borne of extreme sloppiness
The entire first half was a brilliant demonstration of what footballers with their minds elsewhere look like
far better and deserving of praise until another moment of extreme defensive sloppiness saw the Cans equalize in added time
This sloppy performance came just after reports that Bayern’s team were planning a trip to Ibiza to celebrate winning the title if they had won the match
Was the thought of Ibiza what distracted the team
It seems that now, instead of relaxing at the beach, the players will suddenly be hard at work throughout the next few days and preparing for next weekend’s opponent Borussia Mönchengladbach, according to a report from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia):
Vincent Kompany initially gave his players Sunday

the Catholic Church's top official for England and Wales as the Archbishop of Westminster
is preparing to enter his first papal conclave
He says the task of choosing a new pope is "intimidating," and expects a reflective mood as the cardinals gather inside the Vatican's Sistine Chapel
all of the speculation and way of talking about this as oppositional
conservative against liberal and all of that stuff — that will finish
and there'll be much more a mood of reflection," Nichols told NPR
was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis in February
He's part of the most diverse College of Cardinals in his church's history
a majority of the voting cardinals (those under age 80) were appointed by Francis
"I met this morning a cardinal from Rwanda… What he's got to tell us
About a country like Rwanda and what it's lived through and what the church is facing now
from Burma… He's living under a military dictatorship
they make up the mosaic of the Church around the world."
He says that the days in Rome leading up to the conclave are an opportunity for cardinals to listen to each other's stories
Nichols also acknowledged the importance of listening to survivors of sexual abuse in the church
He shared that he's been meeting with victims for the past 20 years and called for the church to bring in outsiders to help them
the church is the last place where they can get immediate help because we are the perpetrator."
While Nichols doesn't think he will come out of the conclave as the next leader of the Catholic Church
he says that the person who does will be making the ultimate sacrifice
"I think being chosen pope is a mini kind of death," Nichols told NPR
"Whoever is chosen pope will never go home again
They'll lose every last vestige of privacy
His whole life will then be taken over — for good purpose… But it's a kind of total surrender."
cardinals are fully sequestered in the Casa Santa Marta

Nichols says he can get by without his podcasts
but missing out on soccer scores might be a little more difficult
"I'm not quite sure what happens to my mobile phone..
I'm worried I might be sleeping through [things]..
and also your phone has got prayer on it that we use so it'll be interesting."
Nichols was told that the average length of a conclave is two or three days
but it can last as long as it takes until two-thirds of the cardinals participating agree on the new pope
He says he packed a few extra pairs of socks

Bobby Caughron is a music journalist and Editor-In-Chief for XS ROCK
He began a life-long fan of hard rock and metal music after hearing KISS as a kid
He is still an avid fan of the 80s metal scene and continues to discover and write about new music in all rock genres today
His pride and joy was his 12-year-old daughter Peyton
who made him smile all the way up to the end
He had a love for and loyalty to all his family and enjoyed spending time fishing
basically just being with everyone and relaxing
putting others before himself in whatever he was doing
he wasn’t afraid of hard work and putting in the sweat equity it took to maintain his home and lend a hand with others’ projects
He had a great sense of humor and found it easier to laugh in life than be serious most of the time
He had time and a smile for everyone from the youngest niece or nephew to the oldest patient he cared for
Loving father to his amazing daughter Peyton
beloved son to his (late) father Vincent Paul Krayvo and dear mother Joanne Krayvo
loyal brother to his three sisters Ann Bursey (Adam)
