according to the San Diego Sheriff's Office
Vista Sheriff's Station deputies responded to the crash at about 6:01 p.m
The San Diego Sheriff's Office said the driver failed to navigate a right turn in his sedan and struck a tree
The driver then exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot
deputies were called to the 200 block of Apollo Drive in Vista for a report of an unconscious person
Authorities later confirmed the individual was the same driver involved in the earlier crash
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Vista Sheriff’s Station Traffic Investigators and the Medical Examiner’s Office
It is currently unknown whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors

have reached out with concerns after the disappearance of a teenage girl brought attention to the facility
there were 368 calls to Dearborn Heights police to visit Vista Maria
The allegations against the facility include physical and sexual abuse
Local 4 sat down with Vista Maria leadership to discuss these concerns
Vista Maria Chief Operating Officer Meredith Reese has been working there for 21 years
When Dearborn Heights police were asking for help locating the missing teen
they raised concerns about the number of calls they’d received to assist at Vista Maria
“In 2024 alone, we’ve had 368 calls for service at that location,” Dearborn Heights police chief Ahmed Haidar said in April
Our officers have used force in some cases
and we’ve seen injuries ranging from fingers to backs and ankles
Haidar said he didn’t know why the situation had gotten worse but believed it could be caused by “staffing issues or hiring unqualified
I understand they might be taking on more than they can handle.”
Reese said Vista Maria was just as “concerned” and “alarmed” during that “particular moment in time.”
and provide some clarity that these are traumatized youth
They come with a history of abuse and neglect
And it can be through verbal it could be physical aggression
“Our staff are trained in order to be able to address those particular emotions and even those behaviors
and so therefore we may and we will seek outside assistance
and we even had meetings with them twice in 2024 to even express it
and so we do need the assistance of Dearborn Heights police and others to be able to make sure that this work continues
In order for us to protect our staff and our kids
---> ‘Their foot in my neck’: Former Vista Maria resident alleges abuse, forcible injections, cover-up
Reese said she believes Vista Maria does an “appropriate job” making sure that all staff and youth are safe
“Security issue is very important for us to make sure that our youth
that we protect them from those from the outside
and staff are allowed to come to our campus.”
In January 2020, a special investigation conducted by MDHHS found that four minor children were allowed to visit a resident
and one of them slipped a pair of crafting scissors to the resident
The minor children were not on an approved visitor list
and “allowing unverified children to visit residents appears to be done across Vista’s campus as a matter of routine.”
The special investigation report stated that while Vista Maria’s policy at the time indicated that a supervisor should verify a visitor’s identity
and the policy did not address how staff are to handle child visitors
The investigator “strongly suggested” that ”Vista Maria consider restricting visitors to parents/guardians/attorneys/clergy and those who are ordered visits by the Court." Stating that minors may be restricted unless a monthly sibling visit was required by DHHS and Vista Maria is able to verify the identity of the siblings
According to the Vista Maria Parent Handbook linked on the Vista Maria website and dated for 2022
“any unauthorized visitor under 18 years old must be accompanied by an authorized adult.”
Current and former staff members have reached out to Local 4 and said they do not feel training is adequate
and have raised concerns about not having enough staff to care for the children
Reese said new hires receive 40 hours of training
They use an evidence-based approach to addressing traumatized clients
which includes mandatory training in trauma-informed care
to be able to provide that particular service
In February, a special investigation was launched by MDHHS after an allegation was made that there were staff members who were not breaking up fights between youth
the investigation found that staff did intervene
and the agency was found to be in compliance
an additional finding during that investigation uncovered a training violation
The report states that the agency was in noncompliance because a team lead had not completed annual physical management training in 2024
A common allegation Local 4 is hearing from former staff and former residents involves sexual misconduct between staff and residents
we report to law enforcement in those entities
is that if there is a concern that we are known and so forth
“If there’s anything that we need to follow up on
And I want to make sure that is very clear.”
A special investigation was launched in January after a resident reported being sexually assaulted in the facility
The investigation found “no evidence to support that the staff had been inappropriate with the youth.”
a staff member told the investigator that “she was ‘sick’ of hearing Youth A say she was pregnant
and someone is coming into her room because she knows it is not true.”
Because staff failed to report the suspected abuse of the resident
the agency was found to be in non-compliance
---> ‘A horror show’: Employees expose alleged abuse, neglect at Vista Maria following teen’s disappearance
A special investigation launched in December 2024 found Vista Maria not in compliance
A resident told the investigator that the food was “nasty” and sometimes served cold
She said that she would go days without eating because she did not like the food
and said that food services were provided a list from nursing staff of youth with allergies
the issues were mainly with dinner service
The chef said that dinner meals were packed and sent to the unit at 4:30 p.m.
and the staff decided when to serve dinner
Kitchen staff were not available to contact after 5 p.m
“A violation was found based on interviews with youth and staff
Although youth reported they received three meals per day
it was consistently reported that dinner was either cold or youth were not able to eat it due to special diets not being followed
Youth consistently reported that alternative dinner options were not available to them
The special investigation report said that residents reported not being served dinner until 5:30 p.m
there was nobody available to contact to correct the meal
The agency was told to “address the timeliness of dinner service
or proper procedures to hold or reheat food.”
we are able to gather the information about any type of dietary concerns or anything
that information is shared with our contracted kitchen staff
and then they able to prepare whatever the necessary food for our youth
We have established cafeteria that’s here on campus that they prepare all the food for all of our residents and our staff
if any residents that need food within the unit
so the food is able to be prepared or warmed as necessary for the youth,” Reese said
---> ‘Cruel punishment’: Former resident accuses Dearborn Heights youth facility of abuse
Video sent to Local 4 from an employee shows boarded-up walls and staff raised concerns about safety. A special investigation report from March 2024
found the agency in non-compliance due to “metal sticking out of the wall.”
is that if there’s anything that’s addressed
and that is property destruction or anything that has happened
then we do have an on-site facility team that does address the issue,” Reese said
“We cannot just have holes in the wall and just leave it unattended
We cannot have our children to be able to injure themselves and so forth and not do nothing
So we do have to secure the wall to make sure that it doesn’t happen
Protection to make sure harm to self or others
the next step that is that some staff members may not be aware and follow that process is that
anything of a replacement window or any other material
and then we’re able to fix those concerns there in the building
“We do have a facility maintenance schedule and so forth
and to be able to fix those particular areas
“That’s why I just want to make sure that it’s very clear that’s not just left unattended
that we do have a process and we do have a facility maintenance schedule to be able to fix those key items for our kids and for our staff,” Reese said

Two sailors were rescued off the coast of Isla Vista on Saturday evening
according to the Santa Barbara County (SBC) Fire Department
SBC Fire Public Information Officer Scott Safechuck reports in a post on X that emergency crews were called to the incident 3/4 of a mile out from Del Playa Drive and Camino Majorca at 5:14 p.m
The official says two rescue watercraft were launched with four firefighter ocean rescuers on board
The catamaran sailboat had reportedly been experiencing mechanical and mast issues
requiring the two sailors on board to be rescued
Safechuck says the sailors were brought back to the beach in Goleta with no medical complaints
The official added that the boat was towed using a rescue watercraft
LAKE WORTH — Caleb Smith didn't hit it hard
The junior's walk-off sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh gave Park Vista a 2-1 victory – and with it
The Gatorade bath preceded a long sigh of relief from head coach Larry Greenstein
who watched his guys battle for the duration of a truly wild three-game series that wrapped up May 3
“Would have been nice to win 1-0 and save a few years of my life
The fourth-seeded Cobras (24-6) will face the third-seeded Jupiter Warriors (22-9) in the best-of-three regional finals beginning Wednesday
The first two games will be played at Jupiter with a third game
The winner of that series advances to the state tournament in Fort Myers
Remembering Game 2 comeback: Park Vista stages massive rally against Vero Beach, forcing Game 3
Watch high school baseball live on the NFHS Network
Park Vista's Cody Wexler battled his counterpart Cody Morgan in a pitcher's duel that stood in stark contrast to the series’ first two games
which saw a total of 28 runs scored in Vero Beach
who entered Game 3 with rotations and bullpens alike taxed to the limit
After working out some earlier jitters and escaping a bases loaded jam in the first inning
scattering seven hits against seven strikeouts and allowing a single earned run
if I can get him for two or three innings
Offense was tough to come by for both teams
but Park Vista broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth
Following Will Bavaro's stand-up double to open the inning
Anthony Espinoza laced a single into right field to score the game's first run
Even with the traction the Cobras found in that inning
the first four innings were over in 45 minutes
It was the game's later stages where onlookers were reminded of whether they'd taken their blood pressure medication
Vero Beach had a big opportunity to score in the top of the sixth
putting runners at the corners with just one out
A passed ball and an errant throw presented what could have been an opportunity to score the tying run
but the Indians held runners in place on both occasions
A questionable check swing kept Vero alive in the inning
bringing head Coach Larry Greenstein out of the dugout in protest
While he’d been on the receiving end of strikes all night long from Wexler
catcher Anthony Iaciofano saved the day by firing his own strike to nail the lead runner and help end the threat
"We trusted our guy and we knew what they were going to do," Iaciofano said
Sweat wasn't done collecting on the collective brows of both teams — for if the first five innings went by without much drama
Vero Beach's Jace Romans took a pitch off the leg in the top of the seventh inning to score the tying run
watching his teammate cross home plate and the scoreboard even out at 1-1
But Park Vista would finally break through the tiring arm of Morgan
loading up the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning to mirror the chance Vero Beach had in the top half
In his own words Smith has battled mental pressure all game long at the plate
but when he stepped into the batter's box with a chance to win Game 3
crushing a pitch — but pulling it foul down the left field line
sailing into center field far enough to make Antonio Casella's slide into home plate more theatrical than necessary
'I'm not God and I need to just do what I need to do and I'm build for the moment,'" Smith said
there.' And I saw it going back and I was like
With Jupiter up next in what promises to be a battle of public school dominance
"All I've got to say is that they better be ready," he said

Home » News » Starkville nonprofits ‘devastated’ by DOGE cuts to VISTA program
STARKVILLE — Cornelius Edmond logged into his email Monday afternoon
intending to accept an offer for a third year with AmeriCorps VISTA
he found an email from AmeriCorps informing him that his position with the Starkville Area Arts Council as the arts programming assistant had been terminated
Did I do something wrong?’” Edmond recalled
I noticed that the whole entire project had been terminated
and that’s when I realized this is something bigger than just me.”
Edmond is one of thousands of AmeriCorps VISTA employees placed on sudden administrative leave after the Department of Government Efficiency ordered the agency to cut nearly $400 million in funding last week
VISTA employees were told by email they would be placed on paid leave through May 19
during which time they should seek reassignment
offers participants a poverty-wage salary of about $24,000 annually
along with health benefits and a $7,500 education stipend at the end of their term
Edmond has worked with AmeriCorps through Mississippi State University’s Maroon Volunteer Center since July 2023
The center served as a site for AmeriCorps employees to be connected with area nonprofits – receiving $202,733 in annual federal grants for the program – until funding was cut Monday morning
“The AmeriCorps VISTA position at MSU will be among the 30,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members being forced to exit their programs prematurely,” said Sid Salter
MSU vice president for strategic communications and director of public affairs
Although the Maroon Volunteer Center will continue its operations through Service Dawgs
a campus volunteer program separate from AmeriCorps
the cuts have left Starkville nonprofits uncertain about the future
interim executive director for Starkville Area Arts Council
expressed concern that the termination of VISTA positions will force nonprofits to pay significantly more for the same staffing levels
have to hire these people outright … it’s going to cost us thousands of dollars that we did not have to account for last week,” Reid said
“It’s going to cost nonprofits so much more money in a time where donations are thin
Edmond’s role at the arts council included managing social media
writing newsletters and assisting Reid with grant writing
all of which are tasks that Reid describes as “essential,” especially as the organization searches for a new executive director
“It’s very disheartening that they consider it to be government waste
operations coordinator for Starkville Strong
Carruth handles coordinating interns and volunteers daily
What I do at Starkville Strong and what the other VISTAs do here is invaluable
It’s been very difficult to know that this job that I love so much
the work that I’m doing that I’m so passionate about … to wake up and be told that actually
who evaluates client cases and provides housing and bill assistance to clients
said she hasn’t had time to process the news due to the demands of her role
Christy plans to continue volunteering with Starkville Strong
and I just can’t take the time to feel bad because this is happening,” Christy said
said she planned to hire two additional VISTA employees through the United Way of the Golden Triangle Region
though she expects United Way’s program will be cut soon as well
“There is a concern because all of our colleagues around us have closed and shut down,” Bradley said
“… We can’t get anyone on the phone to give us any specific information regarding our specific project
waiting for whatever news they’re going to tell us.”
Herrington said if United Way’s AmeriCorps program is terminated
losing both her operations coordinator and case manager will significantly impact the organization’s scale of aid
“We will have to go back to those earlier years where all we did was address a couple of things and not the wide net of things that we’ve since picked up,” Herrington said
“When I say nobody else is addressing homelessness like we are
you’re going to start to see more homeless on the streets
You’re going to have a lot more people who don’t have the mentorship and the guidance they need to get out of the crisis they’re in.”
“I truly don’t know what I’m going to do,” Brown said
Two days he’s been gone … and I am about to lose my mind around here.”
Herrington and Brown all agreed community members could help the organizations by donating monetarily on the organizations’ websites
or by donating their time through volunteer work

Held to one hit during five scoreless innings

Johnny Iaciofano greeted Ashton Wetmiller with a single
really good,” Greenstein said of Dimitroff
“I give credit to our guys for digging deep
Aiden Buster to the rescueAlready thin on pitching
Greenstein turned to seldom-used Buster to start the fifth inning with his team down 7-0
Buster was cut from the Park Vista team as a freshman and sophomore
It was “the love of the game” that kept Buster coming back for more
“Wrestling helped me out a lot,” Buster said
“When you’re on the mat and you’re one-on-one
I just zoned out and I guess I did the job.”
Making his sixth appearance of the season and owner of an earned run average close to 10
Buster retired the first eight hitters he faced
“I said a prayer and it went my way tonight,” Buster said
“This season really hasn’t been the best for me
Tonight hopefully is big for a lot of us.”
He had such a heart,” Greenstein said of his senior right-hander
Still there was that elusive 21st out to record
Marshall Cobb kept Vero Beach (27-3) alive with a single to right
Pinch-hitter Wyatt Scruggs then doubled to left
Park Vista caught the runner scrambling to get back to third base and Michael Maynes applied the tag to send the visitors into a frenzy
“That was the best comeback I’ve ever seen,” Buster said
They got the runs and I just kept them from scoring runs.”
“It’s amazing when a bunch of guys pull together for one guy
He had the juice flowing,” Greenstein said of Buster
but that’s all inside him with the help of his team.”
top-seeded Vero Beach plated two runs in the second inning
three in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead
Cole Morgan hit his second home run of the season
and had a run-scoring single on an 0-2 pitch
Cobb knocked in a pair of runs with a single
Jordan Tomas pushed across another with a bases-loaded walk
“They kept adding runs and the task got taller,” Greenstein said
That’s why you have to play all seven innings.”
“I explain it as baseball,” Vero Beach coach Bryan Rahal said
“Sometimes you get going and their hitting got a little contagious
I as a coach didn’t do enough to stop that
Deciding game SaturdayThe teams will play seven innings (or more) Saturday to decide which team goes to the regional final
Greenstein said it was too early to look to Saturday
“We get to practice tomorrow (Friday),” Greenstein said after his team raised its mark to 23-6
Rahal also looks forward to Friday's practice
“We’ll come out tomorrow and try to fix some of the things we didn’t do well tonight,” Rahal said
“Sharpen up some of the things we did and get ready to go play on Saturday.”
Bryan does an awesome job with his whole staff
Saturday's winner will play the winner of the deciding game between second-seeded Harmony and third-seeded Jupiter in a series that begins May 7 at the higher seed

parents and staff protested outside Vista Grande Charter High School Tuesday evening (April 29) after classes were suspended for two days due to an alleged death threat made via social media against the school’s director
including a comment stating "Kill Jim," as well as bullying and physical threats allegedly made among staff and students
is under investigation by New Mexico State Police
The message was part of an emotional Instagram thread started in a school group chat shortly after students learned a longtime teacher had been placed on administrative leave
“It wasn’t even a student that goes to school here,” Kyla Stow
a VGHS senior who helped organize the protest
parents and teachers allege a pattern of intimidation and retaliatory behavior from Smith
At the VGHS Governing Board’s March 25 and April 25 meetings
students and parents cited alleged medical accommodation violations
threatened loss of internships and cultural insensitivity
“The current director does not listen to student concerns,” Stow told the governing board in March
especially when their views challenge his own
Rather than considering other perspectives
he responds with fear-based tactics designed to silence opposition
speaking over students and threatening them with his institutional power.”
said she once asked Smith if she could step into another room because she felt unwell
On the advice of the school's legal counsel
Smith hasn't responded publicly to specific allegations
VGHS cannot comment about any individual student
VGHS follows all state and federal laws regarding accommodations for students.”
Responding to claims that a student was denied an excused absence for a religious ceremony at Taos Pueblo

and he closed the gap — there was about a 10-foot gap — and he started raising his voice at me,” said Brian Garcia
“He said because I was late he was going to take away my internship
I asked if he could do that because it was already scheduled for a semester and he stepped up to me and said
‘I don’t like your tone.’ He closed out about a 5-foot gap
Stow and Garcia said they surveyed students’ satisfaction with the school
There are 67 students enrolled at Vista Grande and 75 percent of the student body were survey respondents
around 65 percent of students said they believe Smith “rarely” makes decisions that prioritize students’ interests
About 17 percent answered “never,” 17 percent “often,” and 2 percent said “always.”
Around 37 percent of students reported feeling “uncomfortable” with the school’s disciplinary policies; 59 percent reported the school’s rules as “unfair;” and 30 percent said the director addresses students’ concerns “effectively.”
is calling for Smith to be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation
“I’ve learned of a troubling pattern in the current director’s leadership
particularly his interaction with students,” Alexander said
reading from a letter he wrote to the governing board
students are sharing that their director often responds with authoritative
invading personal space and invoking institutional power to silence.”
I had a situation with this girl in the bathroom where she kept grabbing me
and I expressed this to my parents,” Velarde said
he called me a liar — not only in front of me
Velarde alleges this was because she didn’t know the exact time it happened
but that she couldn’t know the time because students are required to keep their cell phones in pouches during school hours
it was only brought out into the open once we asked our internship teacher
She had talked to Jim Smith and it said — flat out — on that paper that I was a disrespectful liar
When we asked the reasons why I was a liar and disrespectful
he said it was because of that situation.”
Velarde said she was suspended following the “Kill Jim” message
The New Mexico State Police cannot comment on the investigation
The governing board had scheduled a special meeting Tuesday (April 29)
that was cancelled because the agenda hadn't posted in a timely manner
School officials said they will reschedule and plan to distribute a student input survey
“We are committed to finishing this school year strong for our students
“Our focus remains on providing a supportive
positive environment where every student can succeed and feel proud of their growth and accomplishments.”

– More allegations of physical and sexual abuse are coming out against Vista Maria
a residential treatment facility for girls — the same place 16-year-old Tasia Keaton
“We’ve got members from the feds to local police working around the clock,” Chief Ahmed Haidar of the Dearborn Heights Police Department said
or “Johns,” at least twice since she went missing
“We’re chasing leads across Metro Detroit,” Haidar said

a former resident who was at Vista Maria from September 2007 to July 2008
“I was diagnosed with autism while I was there,” Tague said
“They gave me medications that caused psychosis
I’d be locked in a room or forcibly injected.”
being held down with staff’s knees on her neck and back
They’d sit there with their foot in my neck
Tague also recalled multiple suicide attempts and episodes of self-harm
The nurse cleaned me up and lectured me,” she said
Tague said staff instigated fights among residents and claimed that many staff were hired without proper background checks
She also said that sexual misconduct allegations were dismissed internally by convincing other residents that the girls making the claims were lying

Tague, other residents, and even employees have complained about the lack of adequate staff, training and Vista Maria’s “generic” and superficial therapeutic programs.
“Everyone had the same treatment plan. They just swapped names,” Tague said.
While there have been many calls from current and former residents and staff to shut down or investigate the facility, Tague said it goes much deeper.
“Stop human trafficking, because that’s what’s going on,” she said. “All these facilities. Not just Vista Maria.”
Meanwhile, the Dearborn Heights police chief says law enforcement has been devoting major resources to the disappearance of Tasia Keaton, and they are urging current and former residents and staff of Vista Maria to come forward with information about alleged abuse.
“If you are a victim of a crime—assault, sexual assault, fights with staff—please come forward,” Haidar said. “We will investigate. I will personally follow up.”
Anyone with information about this case should contact Dearborn Heights Police at 313-277-6770, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP, or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect should report it by calling 1-855-444-3911.
Local 4 has also reached out to Vista Maria for statements, interviews and a tour of the facility.
The following statement was provided on April 22, 2025:
“As a mental health facility focused on youth, we prioritize the health, safety, and privacy of all our residents. Out of an abundance of caution, speaking on individual incidents could jeopardize the trust our residents and their families have placed in us.
We look forward to a time soon, when we can sit down to share the story of the important work being done at Vista Maria. In the meantime, we continue to work with all local and federal law enforcement agencies to support the search for Tasia. Our hearts go out to her family and friends, and we hope that she is reunited with them very soon.

As a former VISTA volunteer, I applaud efforts of more than 20 states to sue the Trump administration over efforts to dismantle AmeriCorps. (“WA joins lawsuit against Trump to stop AmeriCorps cuts,” April 29
AmeriCorps workers basically serve along with VISTAs in local communities as a domestic version of the Peace Corps
AmeriCorps will lose nearly $400 million in grants and end the service of 32,000 workers
and I were assigned over 50 years ago to work with former migrant worker families at Arizona Job Colleges in Casa Grande
Ariz. Our VISTA experience was life-changing and helped prepare us for careers in local government and education
Trump’s efforts against AmeriCorps are mean-spirited and don’t save money in the long run
Stay secure and make sure you have the best reading experience possible by upgrading your browser
(WCBI) – Nonprofits have a huge impact on the local community
Whether it’s providing after-school programs or feeding the hungry
they’re vital to many people in the region
And many of these organizations get by with the help of AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program.
Brittany Turner, the Director of Programs for the Boys and Girls Club of the GTR
said VISTA’s impact on them every day
“It impacts us on a day-to-day basis in our office,” Turner said
“To be able to reach beyond the scope of services that we currently have
and to be able to reach more kids and families within our communities.”
Some of the volunteers handle administrative duties
allowing them to work for non-profits without straining the budgets of those organizations
Christian Bradley, the United Way AmeriCorps VISTA project supervisor
“That’s what that VISTA member does,” Bradley said
it’s a big hole in what that nonprofit is able to do.”
The AmeriCorps VISTA program just had its budget significantly cut by the Department of Government efficiency
Meaning many organizations are scrambling to figure out what’s next
Turner said her organization is going back to the drawing board with its plans going forward

“It’s going to come from us at the bottom.”
