NC – A person who says they have seen police body cam video of the night a Wadesboro Police K9 was shot and killed is speaking out
The person speaking out talked with the dog’s former owner
Harrington provided WCCB with a recording of their phone call
Wadesboro Police used K9 Blitz in a suspect chase on April 2nd that started in Anson County and ended in Montgomery County
The dog was shot and killed on the scene by police
Harrington shared a recording of a conversation between himself and a person who claims they have seen the body camera video
“They’re trying to get the suspect off the ground and in the ambulance and all that
And then you hear [the handler] scream in pain and tell them to shoot the dog.” They continue
“He (Blitz) doesn’t lunge at anybody
He walks towards them and I think that’s probably when the two shots
Harrington donated Blitz to Wadesboro Police Chief Jason Eschert in January
Harrington says Chief Eschert agreed the K9 would only be used to sniff out drugs
WCCB received a statement from the public relations coordinator for the Virginia State Police that says
“K9 Blitz was part of a recent patrol K9 school with Virginia State Police
He was removed from the program last fall because of unwarranted aggression issues and was adopted by a new owner with some experience handling those concerns.”
Chief Eschert says he learned about Blitz’ history after the dog died
attacked a kennel attendant and caused some serious injuries,” Chief Eschert said
Harrington says the Wadesboro Police department failed to use Blitz properly and without proper training
“63 days after they received the dog
Blitz was part of the Wadesboro Police Department in Anson County
but since the dog was shot in Montgomery County
the district attorney there would have to request SBI assistance for an independent investigation
Harrington has requested Blitz’s remains
the chief has so far declined that request
He has not answered WCCB’s inquiry as to the current location of the K9’s remains

NC – Wadesboro residents are demanding answers after a police K9 was shot on the job during a chase across county lines on April 1st
Josh Harrington says he breeds and imports police K9s
He donated K9 Blitz to the Wadesboro Police Department in January
“(Police Chief Jason Eschert) told me they were broke and couldn’t afford a K9,” Harrington recalls
He says Eschert assured him Blitz would only be used for drug searches
Wadesboro Police used Blitz in at least two drug searches
Then authorities used Blitz while chasing a woman from Anson to Montgomery County during the first week of April
“He let go of the suspect and went for his toy
accidentally biting the handler’s hand because she put herself in the position to get bit,” Harrington said
Chief said they had to shoot the dog to get him off the handler.”
Harrington shared a video that he says shows the moments before Blitz was shot dozens of times
“The story has changed about seven different times
until officers started talking to other officers
and deputies started talking to other deputies
that’s how we learned that there were 31 shots fired (at the dog),” Harrington said
At a heated Wadesboro town hall meeting Monday night
citizens called for Chief Eschert’s resignation
Eschert claims Blitz had a history of misconduct
which he says Harrington did not tell him about
Harrington with the understanding that he would only be used to breed,” Eschert said
Eschert says he’s investigating the shooting of the dog
“I’m sorry at the loss of that dog,” Eschert said
“More will come out later that I cannot discuss here,” he added
Harrington says he wants answers about why Blitz was used in a chase and then shot
and transparency being clear to the citizens
and his remains being turned over to the appropriate owners so he can be honored and have the funeral he deserves.”
Chief Eschert says he contacted the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the SBI about the next steps in this investigation
Eschert also says officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras
but NC law does not allow the release of the video without a court order

The wreck and shooting happened around 8 a.m. on Monday, March 24, off Little Creek Road in Wadesboro
a woman called 911 reporting her daughter and car were taken from her house in Polkton
The child’s father allegedly abducted the girl
Anson County deputies issued a “be on the lookout” for the car
an officer spotted the vehicle in Wadesboro
agents said it wrecked off Little Creek Road near Old Winfield Road
A little girl inside the car suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the site of the crash
Agents said the driver of the vehicle also had a gunshot wound and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition
It wasn’t immediately clear if the man was confirmed to be the girl’s father
Investigators believed the child was killed by the man driving the car before he shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt
Authorities promised on Monday that additional information would be released on Tuesday
“Until then I would like to say that officers with all agencies did everything possible to end this incident peacefully and with no harm to anyone,” Polkton officers wrote, in part, on Facebook
“All officers handled the situation properly and in accordance with policy procedures and with regard to the safety of the public and everyone else.”

(WBTV) - A man accused of shooting into a vehicle with two kids inside in Anson County over the weekend also had enough fentanyl to kill more than 100,000 people
The shooting happened just before noon on Saturday, March 8 after a woman called Wadesboro police after she said she was being followed
The woman said she pulled into a CVS pharmacy parking lot on East Caswell Street when the person following her started shooting
Police said multiple shots were fired into the woman’s vehicle
which had two adults and two children inside
Nobody was hurt by the bullets and the suspect got on Highway 74 and fled the scene
Officers were able to get information on the suspect and obtained arrest warrants and a search warrant for a house on Cherry Street
Wadesboro police officers searched the house and found 232 grams of fentanyl, which police said is enough to kill 116,000 people. To put that into perspective, there are only about 22,000 people in all of Anson County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau
police also found a little under a pound and a half of marijuana
a small amount of cocaine and drug paraphernalia
several magazines and a “large amount” of ammunition was also found
Officers said the ammunition found at the house matched that that was used in the shooting at the CVS
As a result of the shooting and drug discovery
police arrested 28-year-old Bryant Dewitt Lemon Jr
Lemon was charged with a long list of offenses
Lemon had his bond set at $306,000 for the drugs charges only
but was denied bond for the shooting-related charges
Four other people were also arrested in connection with the case
Two were charged with felony conspiracy related to the shooting
while the other two were charged with drug offenses
Wadesboro police said everyone involved in the case turned themselves in by Monday
Records showed that Lemon was booked into the Anson County Jail

WADESBORO, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Town of Wadesboro continues to grieve the loss of K-9 Officer Blitz
who was killed in the line of duty last week
Police Chief Jason Eschert told Queen City News he asked the district attorney from nearby Montgomery County to conduct a separate investigation into what happened
He said it’s because the State Bureau of Investigation cannot
since it was not another officer who was shot
The dog was killed in the line of duty on April 2 after a chase spanning Anson and Montgomery counties
