culminated at the groundbreaking celebration for UBE's new chemical production facility
The new $500 million manufacturing facility will be located at Cornerstone Energy Park in Waggaman
This UBE facility will create the first reliable domestic U.S
supply of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC)
critical components of lithium-ion battery and semiconductor manufacturing
"We are thrilled to partner with UBE on this exciting new project," says Stephen Gray
"This state-of-the-art facility not only underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable technologies but also plays a pivotal role in strengthening the domestic supply chain for electric vehicle battery components
The essential materials produced at this plant will contribute to the growth of the already booming EV industry."
"This manufacturing facility will be UBE's first large-scale chemical facility in the United States
and CEP offers not only a strategic location but also raw materials needed for manufacturing
and competitive logistics," said Masato Izumihara
President and Representative Director of UBE
Gray will set the customer's 5-story pipe racks and handle all piping and connections from the racks to processing modules and utility points
Japan-based fabricator Morimatsu will manufacture the processing modules
Gray will oversee the quality program for fabrication and coordinate logistics for delivery
including constructing a temporary barge facility on the Mississippi River and a temporary bridge
Construction will require more than 1,800 helical piles for deep foundations and over 6,400 metric tons of steel
The finished facility will also feature a 34,000 GPM cooling tower
supply chain for lithium-ion batteries essential to electric and hybrid vehicles
as well as semiconductors vital to electronic devices across industries
The UCCA facility is estimated to create 50-60 new skilled positions
with over 400 workers on-site at peak construction
The project is expected to be complete in 2027

Ecovyst's acquisition of Cornerstone Chemical's sulfuric acid assets represents a strategically sound expansion of its production capabilities in the Gulf Coast region
The deal offers three key advantages worth highlighting:
the financial structure appears favorable - Ecovyst is acquiring these assets below replacement value and funding the purchase with existing cash reserves rather than taking on debt
This indicates strong liquidity positioning and disciplined capital allocation
Management's statement that the transaction multiple compares favorably to Ecovyst's current trading multiple suggests potential accretion once integrated
The Waggaman facility's proximity to Ecovyst's existing Baton Rouge operations creates operational complementarity that should enhance network flexibility across their Gulf Coast operations
where logistics and regional supply-demand dynamics significantly impact economics
this network density can provide competitive advantages
this acquisition aligns with Ecovyst's articulated strategic framework of pursuing high-return organic growth complemented by targeted bolt-on acquisitions specifically in their Ecoservices segment
The transaction strengthens their ability to meet existing customer needs while creating capacity for future growth opportunities
While the announcement lacks specifics on purchase price or expected EBITDA contribution
the below-replacement-cost acquisition of hard assets in the capital-intensive chemical industry typically represents favorable value
The targeted Q2 2025 closing provides a clear integration timeline that should allow for methodical planning to maximize operational synergies

a global manufacturer of hydrogen and nitrogen products
has signed a definitive purchase agreement with Incitec Pivot Limited (IPL) for IPL’s ammonia production complex located in Waggaman
CF Industries said it will purchase the Waggaman ammonia plant and related assets for $1.675 billion
It informed that the companies will allocate approximately $425 million of the purchase price to a long-term ammonia offtake agreement under which CF Industries will supply up to 200,000 tonnes of ammonia per year to IPL’s Dyno Nobel subsidiary
CF Industries noted it expects to fund the remaining $1.25 billion of the purchase price with cash on hand
The transaction has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies and is subject to receipt of certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions
The Waggaman ammonia production complex is situated on an integrated chemicals complex owned by Cornerstone Chemical Company
it has a nameplate capacity of 880,000 tonnes of ammonia annually
and ammonia produced at it is distributed ratably to three customers
with approximately 75% used in industrial applications
the facility has a 38,500-tonne ammonia storage tank onsite and the ability to load and transport ammonia by NuStar Pipeline
As it is located in Jefferson Parish on the Mississippi River
it has the potential for vessel loading capabilities for low-carbon ammonia exports
the site is 60 miles southeast of CF Industries’ Donaldsonville Complex
Based on the nature of the medium- to long-term offtake agreements in place with the customers
CF Industries estimated that the plant will generate a gross margin per tonne commensurate with its existing ammonia segment prior to synergies
which the company expects to capture through greater capacity utilisation and operational and logistics optimisation
CF Industries said it anticipates implementing CCS at the site on an accelerated timeline
increasing its network’s low-carbon ammonia production capability
supporting Louisiana’s and the country’s climate goals
and earning 45Q tax credits for sequestered carbon dioxide
commented: “We are pleased to reach this agreement with IPL that benefits from our industry-leading ammonia production capabilities
and provides long-term value for both companies’ shareholders.”
“We believe the Waggaman facility will fit seamlessly into our network
as well as our strategic focus on ammonia as a clean energy source
given its proximity and pipeline connection to our Donaldsonville
its distribution and logistics flexibility
and its favourable characteristics for the addition of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies to enable low-carbon ammonia production.”
CF Industries signed a MoU with South Korean chemical company Lotte Chemical Corporation for a joint exploration of clean ammonia production in the US and its long-term offtake into South Korea

A 23-year-old Waggaman man charged with two counts of second-degree murder was sentenced to 30 years in prison this month after accepting a plea deal from Jefferson Parish prosecutors that saw those charges reduced to manslaughter
who also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted second-degree murder
has been in prison since he was arrested for the March 2010 fatal shootings of Kedrich Steward
The attempted second-degree murder charges stemmed from the shooting of Terrence Toledano
who was critically wounded at the same time Steward and Collins were killed
whom Ridgley was accused of shooting several months earlier
chief of felony prosecutions for the DA’s Office
noted that Ridgley was 16 at the time the crimes were committed
which could have made him eligible for parole after 35 years even if he had been convicted of the more serious crime of second-degree murder
“Based on his age at the time of the offense and evidentiary issues that developed
the DA’s Office believed that a 30-year sentence was the best resolution for the case,” she said in a statement
“We consulted with the families of the deceased and the surviving victims in reaching this decision.”
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of shots fired at 9:11 p.m
and arrived at the rear entrance of Waggaman Playground on Dandelion Drive
they found Steward dead with a gunshot wound to the head and Collins and Toledano badly wounded
arrived and also asked Collins who had shot him
this time recording the answer on his cellphone
"You're sure Samuel Ridgley shot you?" Penton asked
Collins and Toledano were taken to a hospital
Ridgley turned himself in two days later along with Frankie Hookfin Jr.
though the District Attorney’s Office ultimately refused the charges against Hookfin
Hookfin was arrested three years later after a botched execution at the Lapalco Apartments in Harvey
where he and three other men connected to the Harvey Hustlers street gang were accused of firing into a doorway with AK-47s and handguns
injuring three children and two elderly women who lived there
who was named in the sprawling racketeering indictment that helped take down the Harvey Hustlers gang last year
was sentenced in January to 35 years in prison for his role in that shooting
Ridgley was given 30 years on each of the four counts to which he pleaded guilty
but 24th Judicial District Judge Glenn Ansardi said the sentences will run concurrently
according to the terms of the two manslaughter sentences
He will get credit for time served since his arrest in 2010
