Annandale) to enhance playing conditions and increase dedicated courts for pickleball
The project will be completed in two phases
Phase 1 will include converting Tennis Court 11 into four dedicated pickleball courts
restoring Courts 9 and 10 to tennis-only use
The basketball courts will also undergo repairs
Phase 1 is anticipated to be completed by mid-July 2025
replacing half of the walled practice court with two additional dedicated pickleball courts
while preserving the tennis practice wall and courts closest to Courts 9 and 10
This phase will require additional site work
including modifying an existing trail and relocating picnic tables
Phase 2 is expected to be completed by fall 2025
pending necessary permits and weather conditions
Wakefield Park will feature 10 dedicated tennis courts and eight dedicated pickleball courts
reducing competition for dual-use courts and better accommodating the county’s growing demand for racket sports
The final design was informed by public feedback from the July 9
The $300,000 project is funded through the FY 2024 Third Quarter Budget Consideration Item
sponsored by Chairman Jeff McKay and Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw

A light morning rain reduced the number of entries in the third Wakefield High School Car Show
but some 25 classics were still on site in the school’s parking lot for the Saturday (April 26) event
A number of the entries were graduates of Wakefield
with a number of current students on hand observing the various cars and trucks
“It’s always fun to see former Wakefield students and their friends come back for this show,” event organizer Bob Strauss told ARLnow
The show served as a fundraiser for Wakefield’s senior class with upwards of more than $1,300 collected
The past two shows had many more cars on site
Owners of classic cars do not like to drive their vehicles in rainy or wet weather
“The number [of entries] was fairly impressive for a rainy day,” said co-organizer Debbie Strauss
Multiple food trucks were on hand for the show
Trophies were awarded in various categories for the old and new vehicles entered
The best in show went to the Arlington Career Center and its electric car
and we look forward to doing it again in the fall,” Debbie Strauss said
The fourth Wakefield Car Show will likely be held in October
in the Wakefield parking lot like the first three
“We are looking forward to that,” Debbie Strauss said

Five Super League players have been charged with offences from the Match Review Panel: but Hull FC prop Liam Knight is not one of them
Knight was sent off during Hull’s Magic Weekend defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday afternoon for a dangerous tackle on Giants back Sam Hewitt
The Australian was shown a straight red card seconds after Sam Eseh was sent to the sin-bin – leading to fears he would receive a hefty disciplinary charge
the Match Review Panel have decided he will face no further action for his tackle
The notes of that incident say: “Player comes in a reckless manner however contact is mainly all on the body and contact with the head is secondary and minimal
Player comes in front and arm is loose ready to wrap but impact of contact takes opponent away.”
Knight’s Hull team-mate Eseh has been charged
He was hit with Grade C Head Contact for a tackle on Matty English in the closing seconds of the first half
Huddersfield prop Tom Burgess was hit with a Grade B Late Contact charge
earning him three points on his disciplinary record
Wakefield’s Isaiah Vagana was charged with Grade B Head Contact
and given three penalty points – taking his total to 4.5 for the last 12 months
Giants pair Matty English and Sam Hewitt were also both charged with Grade B Dangerous Contact and given three penalty points
No players were suspended – with none reaching the threshold of six points
But it is the absence of Knight from the disciplinary sheet that will cause the biggest uproar and debate without question

In June
the Fairfax County Park Authority unveiled a proposal to reconfigure the tennis and pickleball court area to enhance the dedicated courts for both sports and opened a public comment period to receive community input
more than 150 comments were received with general support favoring the realignment of the court configuration and included several consideration items for the Park Authority to evaluate
Park Authority staff have worked creatively and within the available project budget and geographic footprint of the site to revise the court realignment in response to public input received
The project design includes converting tennis court 11
returning the two dual-use courts (courts 9 and 10) to tennis only
A second phase of the project will replace one-half of a walled practice court with two additional dedicated pickleball courts
The new design includes increased court margins and a north-south orientation for all pickleball courts
Wakefield Park will have 10 dedicated tennis courts and eight dedicated pickleball courts
The revised layout will increase the net amount of pickleball courts and alleviate competition over the use of dual-use courts for either tennis or pickleball
The Park Authority anticipates work to begin on Phase I of the project in spring 2025
The start date of Phase II will be dependent upon the permitting process
but once work begins it is expected that Phase II will take approximately three months to complete
All times are subject to change based on project approvals
permitting and weather conditions during the project window
with funding provided by the Board of Supervisors in a joint FY 2024 Third Quarter Budget Consideration Item from Chairman Jeff McKay and Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw
Supervisor Walkinshaw commended the Park Authority for their diligent work to redesign this proposal in response to community input
“Wakefield Park presents a great opportunity to help meet the growing demand for dedicated pickleball courts
The Park Authority went above and beyond in thinking creatively to develop a solution to address the community’s needs and concerns
I am proud to have been able to work with the Chairman and Park Authority on this project
It represents a win-win for both the pickleball and tennis communities.”
The Fairfax County Park Authority remains committed to providing accessible playing surfaces to support the popularity of racket sports countywide. With this project, the Park Authority will have a total of 90 pickleball courts and 193 tennis courts at parks throughout the county.
