We're now getting a clearer time frame of how long the Walker Mill bridge will be closed for following a crash involving a garbage truck
A representative for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) tells 21 News the bridge will remain closed and I-680 Northbound will be reduced to one lane until mid-June
The bridge has been closed since Wednesday
March 12 after a garbage truck's hydraulic arms struck the overpass
The ODOT representative tells 21 News five beams were struck and damaged as a result of the crash
crews will begin constructing temporary lanes at Walker Mill in order to get repairs started
that work is expected to include heat straightening and beam work in order to repair the bridge's structural integrity
this closure has required traffic including emergency response vehicles to take another route resulting in delayed response times for emergency calls.

Walker Mill overpass closure disrupts traffic and emergency response after truck crash
A major bridge closure in Boardman is creating headaches for both commuters and emergency crews
The Walker Mill overpass on Interstate 680 is now closed indefinitely after a garbage truck’s hydraulic arms struck the bridge early this morning
According to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)
several steel beams underneath the bridge deck were damaged
forcing officials to shut it down for safety
“We’re evaluating repair options before bringing in a contractor,” said ODOT spokesperson Justin Chesnik

While ODOT has not provided a timeline for repairs
Chesnik says crews will work as quickly as possible once a repair plan is in place
we’ll bring in a contractor and get to work,” he said
drivers are urged to allow extra travel time
and emergency responders will continue adjusting their coverage until the bridge is reopened

The Virginia Department of Transportation has a plan to improve safety along Walker Road in Great Falls
targeting persistent concerns with visibility
The proposed changes — detailed in a safety assessment finalized in October — address high-risk areas identified by residents
who flagged specific trouble spots where conditions are particularly dangerous
Influenced by community feedback gathered over the summer
the report recommends short-term fixes as well as larger
The biggest changes include smoothing out the sharp curves around Walker Mill Road and widening a narrow
one-lane bridge over Piney Run to ease backups and improve visibility
which connects Colvin Run Road to Georgetown Pike
has been a frequent source of complaints from residents who say the road’s narrow shoulders
blind curves and lack of bicycle lanes lead to crashes caused by speeding and poor visibility
Between 2019 and 2023, the road saw 43 reported crashes, including five that resulted in non-fatal injuries, per the report prepared for VDOT by the engineering firm Kimley-Horn
Most incidents involved rear-end or angle collisions at intersections
The one-lane bridge over Piney Run emerged as a major safety hazard
with several crashes linked to traffic yielding and queuing on the bridge and limited sight distance
conducted field observations and gathered feedback from residents to build a set of recommended safety improvements
the report recommends clearing overgrown vegetation that blocks sight lines at key intersections
particularly near Park Royal Drive and Walker Mill Road
Trimming low-hanging branches and dense shrubs would improve visibility at intersections
and vegetation between Golden Falcon Street and Minburn Street could be cut back to open up sight lines
Kimley-Horn also suggests new signage to warn drivers about upcoming curves
Walker Mill and Harriman Street intersections
the report proposes installing temporary speed feedback signs on high-speed sections of the road
The portable signs would display drivers’ speeds compared to the posted limit
providing immediate feedback and encouraging slower driving
The initial changes could be rolled out within a year but are estimated to cost upwards of roughly $280,000
VDOT is proposing a series of upgrades focused on improving lane visibility and reducing crashes at intersections
VDOT suggests repaving and restriping Walker Road with high-visibility markings
and adding reflective pavement markers along center lines and edges
Intersections like Walker Mill Road could get conflict warning systems that alert drivers to cross-traffic
giving them more time to react to oncoming vehicles
VDOT recommends a “SafetyEdge” treatment along sharp curves that would provide a gentler road edge
helping prevent drivers from veering off the road
School bus stop locations along Walker Road could also be reviewed for possible relocation or consolidation to ensure student safety
Road reconfiguration and bridge replacement
VDOT has proposed more extensive changes to Walker Road that could take several years to complete
One major recommendation is regrading sharp curves and widening shoulders to make the road more forgiving for drivers navigating tricky sections
Permanent speed feedback signs are also planned to provide ongoing reminders of the speed limit
encouraging safer driving habits in high-speed areas
Replacing the Piney Run bridge is one of the most significant changes under consideration
the bridge is prone to backups and confusion over which driver has the right-of-way
VDOT plans to replace it with a two-lane bridge to improve traffic flow and visibility
making the crossing safer and easier for drivers
should investigate the priority and feasibility of implementing short-
and long-term safety measures to determine what recommendations would be most beneficial and feasible to implement to improve road user safety along Walker Road,” the report concluded
VDOT plans to implement the short-term recommendations within the coming months
possibly with funding assistance from Fairfax County
as they will require inter-agency coordination and additional funding

Kimberley Mills, 37, and Andre Walker, 36, were arrested last month after the two took Xavier Williams to the hospital
The Tavares Police Department confirmed to News 6 on Monday that Mills and Walker are now charged with second-degree murder after the boy’s death
“The tragic loss of Xavier has deeply impacted us all
The discovery of the egregious acts committed against him and his little brother is both heartbreaking and profoundly difficult to comprehend
Their strength and resilience inspire our agency to relentlessly pursue justice on their behalf,” the department said Monday in a release
The couple was originally arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated child abuse, after investigators said there was clear evidence in the case
10-pound weight and duct tape they say was used to torment the boy and his younger brother
Police said Mills was performing CPR on the child when they arrived to AdventHealth Waterman while the man ran inside the hospital for help
Xavier was later taken via helicopter to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children
Mills and Walker had both left the hospital after dropping off Xavier when they learned law enforcement was responding
The mother returned a short while later with another child
The police department said investigators believe the couple left the hospital to go back to the home to do a “hasty cleanup.”
The community has continued to show support for the boy in the weeks since he was taken to the hospital
leaving flowers and creating a memorial outside the home where investigators said he was tortured
I don’t know how a parent can do that to their own child and let their boyfriend do that,” said Heather Sturk
Dozens are still in shock after learning about the horrific tragedy that led to the death of Xavier
noting that he never mentioned anything about what he was going through at home
“We’re all kind of mad at his mom and her boyfriend for doing that to him
but my friend who went in the car with him said it seemed like a normal house and a happy family,” Bailey said
said she believes this is not something the community will “ever recover from.”
and they’re one of the best and they’re good at what they do
A candlelight vigil for Xavier is set for Saturday at 7 p.m
The boy’s family asks anyone who plans to attend to wear blue in honor of Xavier “as a tribute to his life and spirit,” police said
Donations are being gathered for funeral expenses. Click here to donate to the family’s GoFundMe.
Anyone who would like to provide donations can drop them off at the police department or click here to reach the Tavares Police Charities Fund

How do you rapidly replace aging schools while being mindful with taxpayer dollars
This was the challenge faced by Prince George’s County Public School System in Maryland
With more than 200 buildings serving upwards of 135,000 students
the district is no stranger to capital improvements
But a rapid enrollment growth created a space shortage across the middle schools
A novel solution was proposed with the architectural support of Stantec: Use a design bundle that constructs six new facilities on an accelerated timeline of 2.5 years
As the 18th largest school district in the U.S.
Prince George has a sizeable asset portfolio
Because a large percentage is over 60 years old
deferred maintenance or outdated infrastructure can become an insurmountable cost
In response to the number of obsolete facilities
the district created the Blueprint School Program
“The six new schools replace facilities that had reached a critical state,” explained Gwen Morgan
senior principal with Stantec and interior design lead for the Prince George project
“It was determined that the renovation investment required to bring them to minimum standards
much less provide a vibrant environment for today’s students and teachers
surpassed the cost of new construction.”
To achieve economies of scale within the budget
Stantec created a prototype for four of the schools
A nearly identical two-story floorplan is used
with some variations like mirroring to account for site conditions
The only significant differences are in the special education spaces
“We worked hard to leverage the prototype across the four schools. Technology played a big role, such as using Revit’s replication tool to clone drawings,” Morgan said. “Another helpful strategy was to create a single design for a typical classroom.”
An additional design efficiency was selecting a neutral base to use across all sites. The same white and gray paints were repeated, with consistent wood tones as well.
“But to avoid a cookie-cutter feel, we used interior finishes to give each building its own personality,” emphasized Morgan. “Some were replacement campuses with an existing identity to draw from while others were new and offered a blank canvas. We drew from nature elements to create a palette for each site: earth, water, day and night skies, meadow, and forest. Colors were expressed in wall paint, graphic elements, furniture, carpet, and even acoustic treatments.”
Now housing over 8,000 students, the six new schools meet today’s educational needs. Spaces geared toward 21st century learning include production studios equipped for sound and video. One arts-focused school has a black box theater where students can practice stage design. As a nod to lessons learned from the pandemic, each school also has an outdoor classroom that is shaded by a canopy as well as a courtyard with seating adjacent to each cafeteria.
All schools satisfy LEED Silver requirements, with special emphasis on natural light and views to the landscaping. In addition to plentiful windows and glass partitions, tubular skylights were also included.
“These bring daylight into the heart of the interior. We’re seeing increased interest in this technology, which isn’t the same as the leaky and drafty skylights of the 1960s,” Morgan said. “Because of the way they are angled, solar daylight tubes also offer flexibility between the location of the roof penetration and the ceiling below.”
Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln—many schools traditionally draw names from the first American presidents. But modern schools often look to other public figures or geographic cues for identity. The six new schools in the Prince George’s County Public School System were selected with community input, including an online voting process:
