It's a sunny spring Friday afternoon and the parking lot behind the dollar store in Walnut Hills is busy
People are streaming through to pick up produce and other fresh food distributed by the Freestore Foodbank and food rescue nonprofit LaSoupe
The weekly food distribution event started after the neighborhood's Kroger closed in 2017
Longtime Walnut Hills resident Shaun Miller says the closure made it a lot harder for people in Walnut Hills to find food
Kroger leaving was especially hard for seniors like Miller’s grandmother
Data collected by the city shows 1 in 6 people in Walnut Hills are over 65
and more than 1 in 5 of the neighborhood's residents live with a disability — among the highest proportion in the city
Miller started volunteering at the food distribution site five years ago after seeing the difficulties older people were having accessing food
“It started with my grandmother,” she says
Miller says a lot of things have come to the neighborhood to fill the vacuum left by the closure of the grocery store
LaSoupe moved to the community from Newtown in 2020
The organization rescues produce that would otherwise be thrown away and redistributes it
They give away roughly 3,000 pounds of food at the weekly food distribution in Walnut Hills
They're not the first or only ones working on the problem
the community has become a kind of laboratory for ways to address food insecurity
especially for people with mobility and transportation issues
Mona Jenkins is the president of the Walnut Hills Area Council
The initiative hopes to eventually establish a full-scale
community-owned grocery store in the neighborhood
The organization won a $500,000 federal grant last year toward that end
It's currently tied up in the congressional budget process
and its future is murky under the Trump administration
But Jenkins says the organization isn't waiting
They’re working with other co-op efforts like Detroit People's Food Co-op and Dayton's Gem City Market to try and expand their wholesale buying power
And she says they're taking the food to people directly in the meantime — with a focus on seniors
going into our senior buildings and setting up markets and distributing that way.”
Jenkins says that outreach has added benefits beyond just nutrition
“It wasn’t just about the produce,” she says
‘Let’s do some wellness checks.’ When you get to know people
you’re not looking so well today — what’s going on?’ Then you can start looking at connecting them to other resources.”
Simone Bess has lived in Walnut Hills for more than three decades
She's raised two now-grown children there and loves the community
But she "can't imagine" being a young mother in the neighborhood today without the grocery store there
And she echoes others' concerns about the struggles for older people
"A lot of people are on the bus or walking," she says
"That's why the food distributions that Queen Mother's Market and other entities come together to support are so important
There are a lot of older or disabled residents who are challenged with transportation
Being able to walk a half a block or a block away to get food is really important."
Bess lives near the dollar store in Walnut Hills
which puts customers' purchases in bright yellow bags
It might be a good place to get some things
but it's not a place to rely on for nutrition
with most of its food offerings being highly processed and full of sugar and fat
She ties the neighborhood's health to the fact that some residents feel like there aren't other options
Walnut Hills ranks 44th in the city when it comes to diabetes and 47th out of 52 neighborhoods when it comes to kidney conditions
"That's why [seeing] the yellow bags kind of bothers me."
another grassroots group called the Black Power Initiative
and other organizations do some of their work expanding access to produce in the neighborhood's nine community gardens
Those are especially deep-rooted in Walnut Hills and provide a resource for people who otherwise have a hard time getting produce
Gary Dangel is one of the neighborhood's go-to figures for community gardening
He points out the tradition goes back much further than him — he mentions the Beecher Garden
which he says is the oldest Black-run community garden in the city dating back to the 1970s
Dangel has been tending many of the neighborhood's gardens since 2012
He says they're a great way to bring food closer to people
Standing in one at the busy Taft Road and Kemper Lane intersection
he points out high-rise apartment buildings around it
Kemper Lane Apartments — four big apartment buildings that are affordable and with a lot of elderly and mobility-challenged folks who can get a bed and grow themselves whatever vegetables they want,” he says
Dangel also says there's a big social benefit to the gardens
People from those apartments meet each other gardening
even when they never got to know each other in their buildings
Dangel admits that even nine community gardens aren't enough to feed Walnut Hills' 6,000 residents
But they help — and he says they could help more if more local vacant land was devoted to growing food
Dangel says the neighborhood’s needs also go beyond a new grocery store
“There are a lot of issues that lead to people being food insecure,” he says
“Not having a grocery store in the neighborhood makes all of that worse
but it can’t just be one thing that’s the solution to the problem.”
that does stock fresh produce and other grocery items
And a new startup called the Urban Farming Initiative is picking up Dangel's work in the gardens
They're looking to coordinate gardening efforts for maximum productivity and to connect people and organizations growing and eating produce
say each initiative in the neighborhood is a small part of the puzzle
They’re all efforts needed to make healthy food easy to get in Walnut Hills
"The changes that are being made are good changes," Miller says

An affordable housing project in Walnut Hills will be a hundred units smaller than originally planned after community pushback
A few City Council members say the project was better before the changes
Kingsley Development plans to add 180 units across two buildings on what’s currently an empty wooded lot at 2846 May Street
and three-bedroom apartments will be included
The units will be income-restricted to households making between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income, as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
That's as low as $22,050 for a single person and $31,450 for a family of four
development manager for Kingsley Development
says the original proposal included a hundred more units — before about two years of community engagement with Walnut Hills residents
more doughnut shaped building that a lot of community members just felt was way too large right there," Buchenroth said
"So we did multiple working sessions with members in Walnut Hills
City Council's Equitable Growth and Housing Committee voted Tuesday to approve a zoning change necessary for the project to move forward
and a few Council members took the opportunity to voice concern about the decision to reduce the number of units
"We have 3,000 homeless [Cincinnati Public Schools] kids
and we just reduced the number of affordable units by 100," said Committee Chair Mark Jeffreys
"I don't know who's going to face these 3,000 kids and tell them they don't have a home
We have to build affordable housing somewhere."
Council member Evan Nolan agrees the loss of a hundred units is disappointing
"We as a Council need to appropriately consider our values and our policies when we evaluate these projects
and recognize that engagement with the community is vital and is important
but is not the end-all-be-all to how we make these decisions," Nolan said
The Walnut Hills Area Council was involved from the very early stages of this development and did not initially support it
After the developer agreed to fewer units and other changes
the community council sent a letter of support
President Mona Jenkins came to City Hall to speak in support of the zoning change
"We want to make sure that development is done right
and I support the fact that this development went through a very rigorous process," Jenkins said
Jenkins says some residents still have concerns about the project
mostly related to parking and pedestrian safety
that she hopes will be worked out as it continues through the design and approval process
She issued a challenge for City Council: keep listening to the community
"Hear residents — whether it's in Hyde Park
Walnut Hills — when we share these concerns
We're living this every day," Jenkins said
"We are looking to improve [this project] by hopefully having some more input from the city on a consistent basis
whether it's this project or any project going forward in the future."
The zoning change won final approval from City Council in a vote Wednesday

There's a lot to say about Cincinnati Public's Walnut Hills High School
The college-preparatory school boasts an impressive 99% graduation rate; far exceeds Ohio Department of Education & Workforce standards with an overall 5-star rating; and has been ranked as the No
Walnut Hills' academic achievements far exceed that of many other public schools in the district
making it a desirable landing spot for many students looking to get ahead academically and pursue higher education
But despite Walnut Hills being a public school
Students are required to take an entrance exam before becoming eligible for admission
and which students do well enough on that test to get in has some parents questioning the level of equity within Cincinnati Public Schools
Ahead of the final day to take the Walnut Hills Entrance Exam (WHEE) for students looking to enroll in fall 2025
WVXU spoke to parents and students from around the district to hear their thoughts about the school's admission process and what they think the school district could do differently to give every student in Cincinnati Public Schools access to a high-quality high school education
prospective students who want to attend Walnut Hills typically start preparing for the entrance exam while in elementary school
Although the school district refers to the test as the WHEE
a widely used multiple-choice achievement test that judges students based on their skills in reading
recalls what it was like at Woodford Academy preparing for the exam
LISTEN: Are grade tracking apps stressing out your kids?
"A lot of our work had to do with the test," Love said about her classes
"The first time I took it was in the 6th grade because it was mandatory
I just kept taking the test and I wasn't passing."
describes her daughter as an intelligent kid who always did well in the classroom
though she sometimes struggled on big tests
She says many of her daughter's classmates had their sights set on Walnut Hills
and family members wanted her to attend the school too
so there was a lot of pressure to pass the WHEE
Jones said the pressure eventually became too much
"It was an emotional rollercoaster," Jones told WVXU
"She was in tears because the expectation was Walnut."
After briefly enrolling at Shroder High School
Khendal opted to take an EdChoice voucher to attend the private Cincinnati Waldorf School in Mariemonet
She says if she could talk to her younger self
she'd tell her one test score doesn't define her
"You're fine where you're at and you can still excel and do great somewhere else," she said
Jones says her daughter's story isn't unique
As a paraprofessional at Cincinnati Public Schools
Jones says she sees inequities across the district's elementary schools which can make getting into Walnut Hills a bigger challenge for many young CPS students who don't have extensive financial resources
or the same elementary education as other more affluent students
"The way they have it now just is not working
It doesn't give everybody a fair shot to a good education
you have to have the right amount of money
or you have to know the right people and a lot of us just don't."
WVXU made repeated requests over several weeks to interview the leadership at Walnut Hills High School about the entrance exam
and student demographics but they did not agree to an interview before this article's release
Recent data from the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce shows a stark contrast between the racial and economic makeup of the overall student population of Cincinnati Public Schools and the student population of its top schools
Around 72% of CPS students are Black or Hispanic
More than 85% of all the district's students are considered economically disadvantaged
LISTEN: Ohio's poorest performing schools could close under proposed bill
Twenty-six percent of Walnut students are considered economically disadvantaged
A parent with students attending Walnut Hills spoke to WVXU under the condition of anonymity
They say Walnut is pitched as the best and
the only quality public high school option to parents with students at elementary schools like Hyde Park and Kilgour
They say that puts pressure on parents who can afford it to give their kids the best possible chance of testing in
That means paying for private tutors and courses intended to help students pass the WHEE
something many CPS families don't have the resources to pay for
This elementary-level academic arms race can take families outside the orbit of Walnut Hills by surprise
She teaches preschool at Rising Stars @ Vine and has children attending schools in CPS
Her family moved to Cincinnati about 10 years ago from a military town in North Carolina
students only had one option for where to attend high school
The idea of magnet schools and high school entrance exams was foreign to her
so when her family moved into a house down the street from Walnut Hills High School and heard from her neighbors about the school
she assumed that's where her kids would end up when they got older
Patterson says she wasn't familiar with all the high school options within CPS and felt pressured into enrolling her oldest daughter at the prep school even if it wasn't the best fit
"We probably were being the parents that weren't really asking her," she told WVXU
you're going to go to Walnut' because at that time I thought
that's the only decent school in the area.' That's what I was told by a lot of people
her daughter chose to enroll at the smaller Spencer Center for Gifted and Exceptional Students
Patterson says Spencer Center still wasn't a great fit for her daughter
so she tried out some other schools before landing on Cincinnati Public's virtual academy
RELATED: CPS considers new virtual school for students learning English
Patterson says the digital school was just what her daughter was looking for
and a recent autism diagnosis explained why her daughter struggled with larger classroom settings
She wished she'd known about the different options at CPS sooner and says the district could do more to encourage families to explore those options before putting all their energy into Walnut
"I don't know that the kids in Hyde Park are hearing about all the other high schools," Patterson said
she'd like to see the district invest in improving the educational opportunities at elementary schools in the city's underserved neighborhoods
While Walnut Hills might be the "only" option for students in the Hyde Park area
in other parts of Cincinnati a student passing the entrance exam seems to be too rare of an occurrence
huge deal if a kid got into Walnut," Patterson said
"These kids should have the chance to do these things too
And why aren't our kids at these elementary schools making the scores to get into Walnut?"
CINCINNATI — A Walnut Hills High School employee has been removed from the school and is under investigation
according to a spokesperson for Cincinnati Public Schools
The spokesperson said CPS is investigating after a report that an employee "accessed inappropriate websites on a district device."
CPS did not say whether this employee was a teacher or a staff member
"The employee has been removed from the school pending the outcome of the investigation," reads a statement from CPS
"We take this matter seriously and are committed to maintaining a safe environment for our students."
According to a message from the district sent to WCPO from a parent
that employee has been told to stay home while the investigation is underway
Ohio (WKRC) -Some people who live in Walnut Hills are giving the greenlight for an affordable housing project after years of collaboration with developers
Cincinnati Council members recently approved a zone change proposed by development firm Kingsley + Co
The vacant lot was previously limited to manufacturing and transportation use
the development company can build 180 residential units in buildings of up to four or five stories tall
said she and other neighbors made it clear affordable housing was the biggest need for the community
"We decided to sit down and do a collective design
'what do we want this project to look like?'" Jenkins explained
"What design elements did folks not agree with
She said the initial proposal design did not fit the need for the types of families in the historic neighborhood
which we kind of felt didn't really serve everyone," she explained
We'd like to make sure that the projects incorporate and think about families
We want to make it a walkable community and think about families.
And having three and four-bedroom units is important to us."
Fast forward to 2025 and a zone change approval from the city
both the developers and Walnut Hills community are on the same page
The proposal Jenkins received includes one
Leaders with the development company have not said what the project will be called
and said they are still in the preliminary phases but agreed collaboration with the Walnut Hills community was important
A study by the Greater Cincinnati Foundation shows nearly 103,000 households in Hamilton County are spending more than 30% of their income on housing
CINCINNATI — A Walnut Hills woman says she's been grappling with flooding
bug infestations and rotting walls in her apartment for months
Sonia Kennedy has lived at Walnut Hills Apartments on Beecher Street for three and a half years
she says her property manager has not addressed her concerns
showing us the adhesive bug strips hanging from her kitchen
Kennedy showed us the conditions in her bathroom
The visible issues in her apartment paint a grim picture
Kennedy has to dry her wet towels on the balcony due to the flooding in her bathroom
“Some of the electrical sockets don’t work as well,” Kennedy said
Our crews also noticed bubbling walls in the hallway and cracks between the wall and ceiling
Kennedy said bubbles on the floor are from flooding from inside the apartment
The pantries in her kitchen have little to nothing in them
"I can't keep food in there because of the roaches and the bugs," said Kennedy
The situation has left Kennedy feeling trapped and frustrated
which prompted her to call WCPO 9 News for help
I'm on medication since this happened," said Kennedy
"It's hard to have to walk past the rental office every day and can't say help me again help me again
Kennedy has been paying rent escrow because she's been fed up with unanswered maintenance requests
See more about the issues Kennedy's dealt with at the apartment building:
We reached out to the owners and property management team of Walnut Hills Apartments
A lawyer representing the owners told us that by Thursday
maintenance workers would go into Kennedy's apartment to fix the problems
He didn't say when the repairs will get done
but he said the owners plan on ordering parts if that's what it takes
City of Cincinnati records show hundreds of complaints against the apartment going back years
there were 44 open complaints against the property for issues like unsanitary conditions
non-working appliances and plumbing issues
I'm packed up so I'm just trying to wait on some way to get out of here as quick as I can," said Kennedy

Road closures in East Walnut Hills are back
Portions of William Howard Taft Road and Collins Avenue will be closed this weekend and into early next week due to security measures
the following road closures will be in place:
The same roads were closed for one weekend in late January and early February
Drivers are encouraged to use Torrence Parkway
Madison Road and Woodburn Avenue as a detour while the closures are in place
Residents who live within the area where roads are closed will be able to access their neighborhood through one of three marked security checkpoints:
City officials said residents should expect to encounter law enforcement at these checkpoints
Drivers are encouraged to factor in extra time when traveling as a result of these security measures
Officials said delivery trucks and other commercial services delivering to addresses in those neighborhoods may use those checkpoints
City officials confirmed the closures are due to Vice President JD Vance, who has a home in East Walnut Hills
but they did not specify the purpose of his visit
Officials added that "emergency vehicles will not be delayed as a result of these checkpoints."

CINCINNATI — Katherine James and Gigi Moore met in 2022 when they joined the soccer team at Walnut Hills High School
the extent of our friendship was just teammates,” said Moore
That all changed when Moore was diagnosed with cancer in October 2023
“The tumor that I have is actually a gastrinoma
it’s a malignant neuroendocrine tumor,” said Moore
Moore’s tumor is caused by Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
WATCH: Gigi Moore tells us her story here
she just like kind of randomly showed up for me,” Moore said
but I mean like that’s just the kind of person she is.”
James had joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in honor of her great uncle who passed away from cancer
a group of over 50 students from 14 schools across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky to fundraise $75,000 in just seven weeks
“We are focusing all of our money towards cancer research in honor of Gigi to help people find the treatment that they need,” James said
The team will be raising money through restaurant fundraisers, letters, online donations and a benefit gala taking place March 8 at the Junior League of Cincinnati. To buy tickets you can click here.
All the money will go directly to LLS, with the hope of helping people like Moore get the treatments they need.
“I’m having surgery on Thursday, so yeah, I'm excited. They’re gonna remove the head of my pancreas because that’s where the main tumor is located,” said Moore.
Moore is currently recovering from her 14-hour surgery. In a few years, she will be eligible for a liver transplant.

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Police Department on Monday released body camera video and dispatch calls after a man was shot by a police officer in Walnut Hills late Sunday
Sunday in a residential parking lot in the 3000 block of Gilbert Avenue after CPD said it responded to a report of a man armed with a knife and a firearm
Chief Teresa Theetge played the dispatch call in a press conference on Monday about the shooting
A person called the police saying a man was outside with a knife and gun
Theetge said the incident transpired quickly
and one officer fired their gun within about 10 minutes of the initial call to dispatch
hitting 31-year-old Patrick Lyons in the hip
Theetge released the body cam from the incident showing a police officer saying
Don't do this," before Lyons sprinted toward the officer with a knife in his right hand
Watch video of the moment Lyons sprinted toward police officers below
WCPO 9 is not showing the moment he was shot due to its graphic nature:
She added that Lyons was recently released from jail two months ago
He had been in prison for aggravated robbery
Lyons underwent surgery on Sunday night and is still in the hospital
The investigation remains in its early stages
but Theetge said officers recovered a knife at the scene
Learn more about Theetge's response to the shooting in the video below:
Portions of William Howard Taft Road and Collins Avenue will be closed this weekend due to security measures
Residents who live within the area where roads are closed will be able to access their neighborhood through one of three marked security checkpoints
It is unclear if the closures are related to Vice President JD Vance, who has a home in East Walnut Hills. City officials did not immediately respond to The Enquirer's request for comment.
East Walnut Hills apartments to be built on hillside
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Two condominium associations are preparing to dispute a developer's zoning plan
R2 Partners want to build a 65-unit multi-family complex overlooking Columbia Parkway
It got special permissions to build on the hillside
The Edgecliff and Calvin Cliff Condominium Associations argue a new apartment complex will put 90 units in jeopardy of a landslide and block their views
It'd be located on the corner of Kemper and Francis Lanes
We know it's already cost the city $20 million so while I appreciate what they're [R2 Partners] saying
'You put those guidelines in place for a reason
Stick to them,'" said Calvin Cliff Condominium Association President Kathleen Norris
Norris says the associations are fighting the zoning variances that were granted to R2 Partners
This includes allowing them to dig deeper into the hill and build a taller retaining wall
R2 Partners says their construction will make the hill more stable because the walls will be drilled into bedrock
there's a ripple effect going up the hill," Norris said
The Columbia Parkway hillside has a history of slippage and shutting down the road many times
R2 Partners argue the Kemper Lane property is significantly less steep than where Edgecliff and Calvin Cliff are
"We're not opposed to development
but the development has to be safe in changing environmental conditions
and it has to be fair to the 300 homeowners who were already here," Norris said
The renderings show a 5-story building with solar panels and "mechanical units" on top
Part of it would be eye level to people living at Calvin Cliff Condos
R2 says their plan meets the city's screening and sound requirements
and R-2 Partners will go in front of the Zoning Board Of Appeals this Thursday morning at 9
