Traffic on I-94 near Watervliet and Coloma will be affected by a couple of projects starting Monday
Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us the agency will be repaving the Hennessey Road bridge over the highway
we’ll have two lanes open of I-94 in each direction most of the time,” Schirripa said
“There might be some nighttime double lane closures
or it’s just on the one lane in each direction at Hennessey Road
but there will also be some intermittent lane closures on Hennessey Road over I-94.”
The bridge project is part of the larger I-94 repaving project now underway between Coloma and Watervliet
That $32 million project will continue through next August
although the Hennessey Road bridge part of it should be finished this August
Schirripa tells us American Electric Power will be doing a utility project in the area of Park Road in Berrien County starting Monday
That will involve dragging some power lines across I-94
“We’ll have some intermittent total closures of I-94 during that time
But we’ll use the state police to assist us
and those closures won’t last more than 10 or 15 minutes at a time.”
Schirripa says traffic will simply be stopped while AEP crews do their thing
All of those total closures will only happen during the overnight hours and the utility work will be for one week only
Drivers are reminded to be extra cautious and watch out for any crews in the road

Senator Chuck Schumer is criticizing reported cuts targeting the Watervliet Arsenal's workforce
said the rumored DOGE-recommended cuts to the Arsenal's workforce
"would undermine Watervliet Arsenal’s production of the top-notch large-caliber cannon tubes
in a letter to Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll
said the reported cuts would hurt the Arsenal's capacity to manufacture cannons for the military and therefore degrade Army mission readiness
"When Secretary Driscoll met with me in early February
I told him how valuable the Watervliet Arsenal is and that he should visit Watervliet Arsenal
now seeing this facility’s work firsthand is more pertinent than ever," Schumer said in his statement
"Once Secretary Driscoll visits Watervliet
I am certain he will realize the civilian workforce’s unquestionable contributions to national security
namely their unique and irreplaceable expertise honed over 200 years of delivering quality munitions
and artillery weapons systems to the warfighter."
Schumer's statement said cuts proposed by both DOGE and the Pentagon would reduce the Arsenal workforce by up to 40%
with 20% of the laid-off workers being military veterans
The oldest continuously active arsenal in the country has produced weaponry for the military since the War of 1812
No layoffs are coming to the Watervliet Arsenal
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he secured a commitment from U.S
Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll that the rumored plans to lay off staff at the arsenal will not move forward
There had been talks alleging about 300 people could have lost their jobs if those layoffs occurred
"I am glad that the workers at Watervliet Arsenal can now breathe a sigh of relief
Watervliet Arsenal’s highly skilled civilian workforce have irreplaceable technical expertise that have supported America’s troops and allies for generations
and we must continue to invest in the Capital Region to bolster America’s military capacity and national security,” Schumer said in a statement

and other mission-critical artillery components for the U.S
I sincerely thank the Army for heeding my calls for protecting the workforce of the Capital Region
and committing to ensure the Watervliet Arsenal continues to remain a pillar of America’s defense for generations to come.”
Union leaders at the arsenal cheered the news and called the workers there dedicated and patriotic Americans
There will be no job cuts at the Watervliet Arsenal, despite an earlier report that the Department of Governmental Efficiency was planning to lay off 40% of the staff.

the US Army’s Watervliet Arsenal has been forging more cannon tubes at a rate not seen in 40 years

And while there is still room to grow inside the arsenal
secondary sources could offer the service with a glidepath to quickly scaling production
As part of the service’s organic industry base
is the sole producer of cannon tubes inside the US weapons like M1 Abrams tanks
That meant there was a sudden production influx in 2022 when Washington began rushing howitzers to Ukraine to fend off Russian troops
“Use of that [M777] howitzer and the volume it’s been used definitely confirmed the accuracy
and also its endurance that it could fire: Those tubes had longer life than originally expected,” Lalor told reporters on Wednesday after an Association of the US Army event
because you’re firing at that rate … it drives a requirement for additional canon tubes at a rate we haven’t seen in generations,” he added
Lalor estimated that Watervliet has likely tripled production over the past three years
the service revamped its manufacturing processes and modernized the facility
Although the two-star general said he believes the facility still has capacity to grow
lessons from the war in Ukraine have showcased industrial base vulnerabilities and the need to have multiple production sources to avoid a single point of failure that could leave the service without a cannon producer
we’re definitely looking at it that secondary sources are going to be helpful too in a future conflict that we may have to fight.”
The service has begun examining its options for bringing on secondary sources
and Lalor said it has now identified “multiple” sources that
if given the technical data to produce the tubes
could have production lines up and running within 12 to 18 months
because it’s a unique capability,” Lalor said
believe you can produce at a scale and rate faster.”
