A new poll finds that a growing number of Americans are feeling financially strained
a stark reflection of the nation's economic uncertainty
The findings point to a sharp rise in anxiety over rising costs
with 86 percent identifying inflation as the primary cause.
The nationwide survey, conducted by CNBC/SurveyMonkey from Thursday
included 4,200 US adults and found that 73 percent of respondents reported feeling “financially stressed.” Among them
38 percent identified as “very stressed,” with 66 percent citing tariffs as a major contributing factor
Even high earners are not immune — 29 percent of respondents making $100,000 or more said they’re under financial stress
with 86 percent identifying inflation as the primary cause
High interest rates (75 percent) and tariffs (66 percent) also ranked high among reported sources of stress
While inflation has cooled — from a 40-year high of 8 percent in 2022 to 2.4 percent as of March 2025 — prices remain elevated
That sustained sticker shock continues to erode Americans’ purchasing power
The data underscores the deep financial pressure many households are facing

Orthodox Jewish camp operators and Wawarsing officials have declared a truce in two lawsuits the camps brought against the town over new zoning rules they said would prevent them from expanding and hinder their operation
Lawyers for the two sides have signed an agreement to suspend the state and federal cases for six months while the Town Board revises its zoning regulations for religious camps with input from the camp operators
Those new rules would replace ones enacted in 2019 and 2021 that the lawsuits sought to overturn
Their agreement was approved on April 26 by the Albany judge hearing the state lawsuit and is awaiting the approval of the judge hearing the federal case
State case: Orthodox camps bring second zoning lawsuit against Wawarsing
Federal case: Orthodox Jewish camp operators claim bias in new Wawarsing zoning
Those zoning rules in October limited new camps to two parts of town and set a host of new restrictions
including capacity limits and a requirement they be surrounded by fences
Existing camps were exempt from those rules but would be forced to comply if they wanted to expand or make changes
Camp operators complained before the vote that the Town Board hadn't discussed the proposed changes with them
The lawsuit agreement declares the camps will play a role in the development of the new law but won't have "effective veto power" over the board's decisions
The agreement allows the parties to ask judges for an extension of the six-month hold if the Town Board needs more time to develop and enact the new camp regulations
town officials have pledged to refrain from any zoning enforcement against the camps and defer to state and county health departments on any health and safety issues involving the camps
have agreed not to expand their operations during that time
except for erecting new buildings that the town already has approved or seeking approval for new structures other than housing
Nearly 5,300 children attend the summer camps that brought the two lawsuits against Wawarsing
They are among dozens of Orthodox Jewish camps that draw more than 40,000 kids to the Catskills each summer for religious-oriented recreation

ELLENVILLE - The 91-acre property on the edge of the village used to hold a big factory with lots of workers
used for decades to make TV antennas and then pocket and hunting knives
All that remains today are large concrete slabs after the Schrade knife factory was torn down in 2016
But New York's flowering cannabis industry could soon revive the derelict site and jobs that evaporated there
The Wawarsing Planning Board has scheduled a Jan
18 public hearing on plans to build a 380,000-square-foot building where marijuana would be grown
turned into various cannabis products and stored for wholesale distribution
a Chicago-based company that makes and sells marijuana in 10 states
Growth industry: Marijuana makers rush to build for looming adult-use market
Plans announced: Officials cheer looming proposal for cannabis facility near Ellenville
Warwick plant: Marijuana maker buys land for 450,000-square-foot facility
In documents submitted to the town, Cresco forecast the facility ultimately could employ as many as 679 people. That is even higher than the 300 to 400 potential jobs that Ulster County and local officials celebrated when they announced Cresco's interest in the Schrade site at a press conference in August
Ellenville Mayor Jeff Kaplan said Wednesday that village leaders are "very supportive" of the project
both for the large pool of jobs it would offer and the stream of customers for Ellenville restaurants and other businesses
once a large workforce is stationed nearby
adding that he hopes Cresco also will open a dispensary in Ellenville to sell its products
The property is located behind businesses on North Main Street - Route 209 - and straddles a municipal border
with nearly 7 acres in the village of Ellenville and 84 acres in the surrounding town of Wawarsing
The town is overseeing the planning process
The project is part of a rush of cannabis construction since New York's legalization of marijuana for recreational use last year
The state hasn't begun issuing licenses yet to make and sell cannabis products for anyone 21 and older
but companies with medical marijuana licenses are hustling to expand capacity for the much larger adult-use market on the horizon
Cresco joined the New York market in 2019 by buying Valley Agriceuticals
one of 10 companies New York had licensed to make and sell cannabis products to prescribed medical users
Valley Agriceuticals operates a partially completed production site in the town of Wallkill and four Sunnyside dispensaries around the state
including one in Bardonia in Rockland County
Cresco is using the Valley Agriceuticals name for its Ulster County project
it hopes to complete construction of its production facility in 12 to 18 months
on weekdays and use about 98,000 gallons of water per day
which Ellenville has agreed to supply at its usual rate.
Most of the property is now owned by AmTrust Realty Corp., a Manhattan-based developer and property manager, under the name Ellenville Development Partners LLC. According to Cresco's project summary
Ellenville Development will remain responsible for oversight of past groundwater contamination at the property
