The art of falconry is over 4,000 years old. And it’s still going strong every weekend through Memorial Day at the Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie
KERA producer Therese Powell and Morning Edition host Andrew Garcia lined up early to see the first birds of prey show of the day
rides out on horseback to the grassy stage and greets the crowd
It is my job today to share with you the ancient art of falconry.”
Karger, who operates the nonprofit Last Chance Forever Birds of Prey Conservancy in San Antonio
has been hosting the birds of prey show at the festival for 35 years
The show gives the public an up-close view of large raptors like falcons and eagles
and also smaller birds like the petite western screech owl
you're all bloody predictable,” teases Karger
He told us the event he hosts at the festival each year is more than just bringing raptors to the public with a Renaissance twist
“We are trying to let people know that not only are we here to entertain them
but they are here to join us in realizing that nature is beautiful and that we are highly connected to nature
Educating people about that connection is especially important to the work the conservancy does to keep birds safe
Karger described the environmental threats raptors currently face
He said one of the biggest problems is lead
“We've only had one eagle in 25 years come in that was negative-lead
The birds also contend with being misunderstood
Karger said lack of knowledge causes intolerance
there's so much misinformation,” Wright said
”People see a big predator and they're filled with fear
There's the old wives’ tales that they can carry off your livestock and your children and pets
Birds can only carry a third of their body weight
Wright says the goal is to correct the misinformation and educate people
“If we can get our audience members to help us educate other people
maybe next time a bird like this won't get shot.”
They were able to save this golden eagle but unfortunately
she was too injured to be returned to the wild safely
She now lives at the conservancy and participates in the shows to help raise funds they need to save more birds
The Last Chance Forever Conservancy receives about 240 to 300 birds a year
if one bird goes back and breeds – which we've got a bald eagle sitting in southeast Texas at the moment
and I released her on a lake to the west of us
She flew all the way back down to East Texas and right now is sitting on a nest and she's got two eggs sitting in there

Midway's Camryn Carter goes deep in the first inning for a two-run home run in the Pantherettes' 22-5 win over Waxahachie
Midway's Kallei Alvarado makes a throw from her shortstop position
Midway's Camryn Carter celebrates a homer with teammates during their playoff matchup with Waxahachie
you could almost sense the hitters dial up their aggression to beat the impending storm
Lightning flashes off in the distance illuminated the sky throughout the latter part of the game
and nobody wanted to endure a weather delay
the most electric lightning rods belonged to the Midway batters
Midway takes the field for its playoff game with Waxahachie on Friday
The fifth-ranked Pantherettes jolted Waxahachie with a 12-run first inning and kept the power surging throughout in a 22-5 win Friday night at their home diamond
concluding their best-of-three Class 6A Div
Midway (24-2) motors on to the area round to face Rockwall (17-15) next week at a site and time to be announced
“It gets late early out here,” he was thinking of games like this one
Midway's Harper Haas slides into third for a first-inning RBI triple against Waxahachie
“The last couple of games we’ve been kind of getting a slower start
and not really getting the bats going until the third or fourth inning,” said senior first baseman Jayden Sadler
having them going for at least the first inning
I’m sure it made our pitchers feel better too
knowing they had a little bit of cushion.”
Midway nearly batted around twice in that opening frame
The Pantherettes were locked in like a safety deposit box
as four of the first five batters reached base
Baylor signee Harper Haas got the scoring started with an RBI triple to the gap in right-center
Camryn Carter followed by punching a two-run home run to right
and two batters later Sadler smacked a double down the left-field line
Amaya Locke added a two-run double that hugged the left-field line like it was her favorite teddy bear
Nine-hole hitter Tierra Ramos bounced an RBI single up the middle
Carter worked a bases-loaded walk to bring the score to 8-0
Midway's Jayden Sadler (center) celebrates a first-inning grand slam with her teammates
The McLennan Community College-bound slugger used a sledgehammer to pound the final nail in Waxahachie’s coffin
as she belted a grand slam to bring the score to 12-0
“Tonight I knew it was one of my last chances to play on this field
so I knew I was going to give it my all no matter what,” Sadler said
Midway coach Jordan Williams can always find things to tweak in her team’s performance
But it was hard for her to find much fault in the way the Pantherettes rocketed the ball around the field against the Lady Indians (18-11)
Hopefully that stays for another five rounds,” Williams said
and Midway capitalized on plenty of walks in extending the lead
The Pantherettes stretched the gap to 19-1 with a seven-run bottom of the second that featured five bases on balls from three Lady Indian hurlers — Michaela Landers
came with the bases loaded and drove home runs
the starting pitcher Nichols re-entered the game after being pulled in the first and promptly gave up a pair of run-scoring hits — a single by Lilly Davis and a three-run triple into the left-field corner by Locke
Midway's Amaya Locke returns to the dugout after scoring in the first inning
“The kid who was in the DP spot for us today (Ramos) probably hasn’t started in about 10
“She gets in there and just tees off on the ball
And we’ve had a couple of hitters in the front half of our lineup just not seeing it well
Then our back half of the lineup is picking it up.”
When Midway is putting so much pressure on pitchers 1-through-9 in the lineup
you can sense opponents start leaking air like a deflated balloon
“I feel like we’re all able to bounce off of each other and pick each other up when one’s down,” Sadler said
and that’s what makes us so powerful and intimidating in a way
Midway's Kallei Alvarado celebrates after hitting a double in the first inning of the Pantherettes' playoff matchup with Waxahachie
Waxahachie didn’t tell the bus driver to warm up the engine
They cut into the gap with a four-run third off Midway freshman starting pitcher Kaitlyn Lowe
as Landers ripped a two-run home run over the center field wall and Brynne Grammer leaned into one and drove it off the top of the left-field wall and over for a two-run shot of her own
Philipp relieved Lowe nicely and shut the door on Waxahachie thereafter
She retired seven of the 10 batters she faced
with one of those reaching on a fielder’s choice
played for a state championship a year ago
and many of the players from that squad are back
They want nothing more than to get back to Austin and finish it off right this time
“I’m so happy with where they’re at,” Williams said

It was a short run for the recently renovated Texas Theater as a regular live music venue in Downtown Waxahachie
In a late afternoon social media post on Saturday, March 1, 2025, the Texas Theater announced through Facebook that the music venue that has recently brought the popular T.N.T
Dueling Pianos and names like Crystal Gayle to the city will be changing over to a private rental and community event facility
stating that the ticket-sales business model is simply insufficient to remain profitable
“Theater Update: The Texas Theater is not closing
We are transitioning to private and community event rentals
While we understand it’s not favorable to discontinue ticketed concerts
The theater plays a vital role in our community and will continue to do so for years to come
We are actively searching for experienced parties to lease the space if they have resources to sustain that venue model
we will continue maintaining the facility to the highest standards and serving our community through private events
We appreciate all of our staff and the community for the support and look forward to continue playing our part in Downtown Waxahachie.”
the Texas Theater has been a landmark in Downtown Waxahachie
Air conditioning was added at a reopening in 1939 after a fire
and another fire shut the theater down around the early 1940s
The City of Waxahachie purchased the theater in 2009 as part of a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone after the facility had been used for decades in various ways unsuitable for a majestic theater
local residents Jon and Alyssa Garrett bought the theater and restored it to its former art-deco glory while creating an entertainment hub in Downtown Waxahachie

The urgent care chain Medexpress has announced the sudden closing of its Waxahachie clinic
the clinic made its announcement just hours before the clinic would shut down for good at the end of the day on January 31
The email quotes Vice President of Operations Nathan Comstock as saying:
we want to let you know about an important change taking place at our Waxahachie location at 1305 Dallas Highway
MedExpress had made the difficult decision to close this center and our last day of caring for patients at this location will be January 31
We have greatly valued the privilege of providing health care to you and your family
It has truly been an honor to serve patients in the Waxahachie community
Thank you for allowing us to care for you at MedExpress.”
the clinic has offered extended and weekend hours for tending to health matters that were too severe to wait for a primary care physician but not as severe as would necessitate a trip to a hospital emergency room
and uninsured patients usually paid under $150.00 for a visit
which for many local residents made the clinic an affordable alternative to costly emergency room visits
Optum
which has owned Medexpress clinics across the nation since 2015 and is itself a subsidiary of United Health Group
has laid off nurses and other staff to reduce costs as part of a restructuring plan in recent years
It appears that the closing of the Waxahachie location is an extension of the company’s cost-reduction measures
The closing leaves clinics in Irving and Arlington as the nearest Medexpress clinics for Waxahachie area residents whose health insurance coverage specifies Medexpress as an in-network provider
