Webster Thomas senior captain Ruby Marrapese had a very short stint on junior varsity before quickly becoming one of Section V's best outfielders
The next time Marrapese played was in a varsity uniform with her big sister
Ruby was disappointed after not making the initial varsity roster
hoping for a chance to play with her sister before she graduated
knew Marrapese was capable of being called up eventually
Marrapese has since become a Section V champion and one of the most feared center fielders in the area
Following her senior night win over Brighton
she reflected on her career and seemed most proud of playing that one season with Mary
"The first year I got to play with my sister
that was a very cool experience and I really enjoyed that," Ruby Marrapese said
"It was great having Ruby and Mary together," Castro said
Castro noticed Marrapese watching her older sister play at Webster Town Hall
A coach who has since died told Castro that the younger Marrapese was "the next big thing."
The Nazareth University commit and standout basketball player instantly started in left field when she arrived to varsity as a freshman
She's now in her second season at center field
"I'm playing in the outfield with Emily Ford in right and Brooke (Sudore) in left — two amazing outfielders
I think that we're a strong wall out there," Marrapese said
Marrapese's speed stuns spectators as she glides through the outfield for deep fly balls or dives for balls hit into tight gaps
Marrapese's cannon for an arm is another threat if opponents make it on base
She threw a Victor runner out at the plate and turned a double play against Penfield
Diving for outs and throwing runners out at the plate are two of Marrapese's favorite things about playing center field
"She's got that instinct and that intangible thing you can't teach kids
There's a lot of girls on our team who have that
Ruby and a lot of girls on our team are once-in-a-lifetime players you get to coach
Castro praised Marrapese's training and work ethic
which is noticeable in her improved hitting
She's moved up to hitting in the two-hole as a senior
and is batting .577 with 7 RBIs and a 1.251 OPS
Marrapese can bunt and swing for extra base hits
which gives Thomas flexibility behind reliable leadoff Ella Maloney
Castro allows Marrapese to utilize her softball instincts when she makes it on base
consider her in scoring position on any base
She's quick enough to turn a typical single into a double
Bowers and Sweeney's sturdy swings behind Marrapese makes for an potent top of Thomas' lineup
"I can't even talk about what it will be like to not coach Ruby anymore
I will miss her beyond words because of who she is
"I'm glad she's playing locally at Nazareth with these two (Thomas grads Maddie Hicks and Julia Maciag) so I can watch them all play."
Marrapese was honored to be chosen alongside seniors Ford, Molly Sweeney and Olivia Bowers as team captains this spring
Titans vying for captaincy must give speeches to the team
Marrapese was an easy choice for the Thomas players
Castro has nine seniors this season but said Marrapese's "teammates love her."
"It's more of a 'proud' thing that I've worked toward being on varsity for four years
and I think it's a great accomplishment to be a captain," Marrapese said
Thomas is off to a rocky 4-6 start, but the Titans still appear to be a serious Section V Class AA title contender. Those losses include five setbacks to teams outside of the section. Schroeder beat the Titans 5-0 on April 23 in a rematch of the 2024 Section V Class AA final

The lone movie theater in Webster City reopened last night with a showing of “Thunderbolts” after being forced to close following a fire in November of 2023
of the HERO organization for the Webster Theater
fundraising and effort to restore the movie house
“To get rid of the smoke smell and all that tar that covered everything in the theater
we basically had to gut the entire theater back down to the bones,” Abens says
Jeff Pingel also helped to bring about the return of the Webster Theater
a process which was complicated by there being needed repairs that weren’t covered by insurance
“We had to scramble to come up with some pretty significant funds to save the marquee and all the limestone decorative on the front was in jeopardy of falling onto the sidewalk,” Pingel says
and through the grace of everybody being generous
we were able to raise enough money and get that taken care of.”
Insurance coverage on the building alone was $1.2-million
A street party for the Webster Theater is scheduled for May 23rd to celebrate the reopening

The Prime Minister partied to the Toronto band's 2009 song "Whoa Is Me" after securing a fourth term for the Liberal party in Canada's 2025 federal election.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is dancing to victory
The Liberal leader saw his party win a fourth term in government in Canada's federal election on April 28
partying to Down With Webster as they performed "Whoa Is Me," in a clip that has since gone viral
Carney has caused an unexpected resurgence for the Canadian rap-rock band, often using their song "Time to Win" to close out his rallies as he sought to build up support for the Liberals following former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation. He told Nardwuar the choice was not a coincidence
Carney was filmed wearing a Down With Webster sweater and throwing up their signature 'W'
In the winter, the election was looking like an easy win for Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party. But support for the Liberals rebounded amidst threats to Canada's sovereignty from south of the border, while Poilievre faced unfavourable comparisons to the American President, including in an open letter from 150+ Canadian musicians
"His agenda echoes Donald Trump’s playbook: sowing division
and weakening institutions that unite us," the letter stated
referencing Poilievre's anti-social justice rhetoric and targeting of the CBC
Another thing the two have in common: artists asking them not to use their songs
While Neil Young has previously called out Trump for using "Rockin in the Free World" at rallies
Toronto new wave group Martha and the Muffins asked Poilievre to stop using their hit "Echo Beach."
Band member Mark Gane reportedly sent a cease and desist regarding the song's use earlier this year
and says he finds the continued use of the song at campaign events "disrespectful."
"We don’t want to be associated by our work in any shape or form with them,” he said on election day, per The Canadian Press.
"‘Echo Beach’ remains a song about escapism
and personal expression -- not a soundtrack for partisan political campaigns,” the band added in a statement
previously congratulating him when he became Prime Minister in March
"Great campaign song choice," they added

Webster recently spoke to The Patriot Ledger by phone from Florida about his legal, financial and health troubles
He said on April 26 he is trying to reestablish himself in business in Florida in order "to make things right."
Plaintiffs seek to recover more than $1 million in commissions
proceeds from closed real estate transactions and personal loans
Seven lawsuits have been brought against Webster in three different courts
nor has he even retained an attorney to represent him
default judgements have been recorded against him in six of the seven cases
meaning a judge has ruled in favor of the plaintiffs
judges have assessed damages totaling more than $792,000
If and when the plaintiffs will recover the money remains uncertain
Banks have foreclosed on two commercial properties he owned in Marshfield and Braintree
They two properties sold at auction for about $2 million combined
a lawyer representing 16 plaintiffs suing Webster
told The Patriot Ledger that people are lining up with claims on that money
"I don't know if there's going to be any money there at the end of the day," Ahearn said
Webster told The Patriot Ledger that he is trying to set up a business there in order pay the money back
"I have every intention of paying people back," Webster said
"Most of these people are my friends and clients
I'm working hard down here in Florida to establish myself
It isn't going to happen instantaneously."
Asked what type of business he has in Florida
Webster said he hadn't "gotten that far yet" because the foreclosures and lawsuits have occupied his time
"All these people spending money on lawyers – in my opinion it's throwing good money after bad," he said
They're wasting their own money and distracting me from doing what will be necessary to pay people back."

Questioned about the whereabouts of money that plaintiffs says disappeared from escrow accounts under his control
but I can't get into that with you because
"If I say something to you that gets me in deeper trouble
then my ability to pay people back is going to be diminished
then this will all come out," he continued
"I will tell everybody exactly what happened
Webster says he has not led an extravagant lifestyleWebster vehemently denied claims by plaintiffs' lawyers that an extravagant lifestyle contributed to his firm's downfall
"There have been so many rumors," Webster said
Two of the civil complaints cite as extravagances luxury automobiles
frequent travel between Boston and Florida
stays at the Encore Casino in Everett and a $10,500 per month apartment in Deerfield Beach
but I don't have an extravagant lifestyle at all," Webster said
adding that he no longer lives in Deerfield Beach
Webster instead blames the failure of Success on adverse economic conditions stemming from the pandemic
Webster said his business failings have wiped out his savings and led to serious health problems
The pressure was so high that I had a major stroke in November
It was just more pressure than any person could sustain
One person with significant claims on what remains of Webster's assets is his ex-wife
she receives monthly support checks and has joint possession of their former marital home on Prince Rogers Way in Marshfield
according to an affidavit she filed with the Plymouth Probate and Family court
she is owed more than $3 million in future support payments
The court granted her $500,000 attachments on the Prince Rogers Way home and each of the two commercial properties

a Plymouth Superior Court judge tripled that amount as punitive damages
ordering Webster to pay Dailey a total of $458,344 plus another $10,500 in attorney's fees
damages can be tripled when a defendant is found to have willfully and knowingly engaged in deceptive business practices
Ahearn represents 14 former Success agents who claim to have lost $337,556 in commissions and loans to Webster
Ahearn said he'll seek triple damages in that case as well at a hearing scheduled for June 3 in Brockton

The red hoodie with DWW's logo and a Canadian flag above the heart is now available for purchase "due to popular demand," according to the band
as long as you choose to party!" the band wrote in an Instagram post
Pre-orders for the hoodie with a jersey-style drawstring, a regular hoodie and a T-shirt, all with the same design, are ready for pre-order, costing $100, $65 and $35, respectively. Check it out on Down with Webster's website
In addition to announcing the new merch, the band posted a video of Carney hanging with the band and having a beer with them while rapping along to one of their songs yesterday. He may have underplayed his love for them a little too much on his Nardwuar appearance!

A Hidden Valley Lake resident was one of two people randomly selected by Grocery Outlet to receive the lifetime prize
A Hidden Valley Lake woman is feeling “lucky” after winning free groceries for life in a Grocery Outlet sweepstakes
Michaele Webster was one of two grand prize winners who were randomly selected from more than 29 million entries in the Emeryville-based bargain market’s first-of-its-kind sweepstakes
In a statement shared with The Press Democrat Thursday
Webster said that the win came as a surprise
I heard I won but I didn't expect that I won something big,“ she said
Webster will be given a gift card each year with $6,000 on it (the value of groceries for a year) and will be able to spend it how she likes
a regular shopper at the store operated by Mitch and Carol Beare at 18657 Oak Meadow Drive in Middletown
said she likes that the store is close and convenient
it's awesome to have good choices,” she said
In a video posted on the Hidden Valley Lake store’s Facebook page
Grocery Outlet’s Chief Marketing Officer Layla Kasha said the sweepstakes
coincided with the release late last year of the store’s new app that lets shoppers view weekly ads and get daily updates on deals at local stores
“Our customers loved (the sweepstakes) and we loved the engagement with everyone,” Kasha said in a phone interview Thursday
especially at a time when it’s so hard to make ends meet.”
People were automatically entered into the sweepstakes when they downloaded the app
as well as each time they shopped at a store and entered their phone number or used the app at checkout
People could also enter on Grocery Outlet’s website without purchasing
being able to award regular shoppers like Webster with the grand prize was thrilling for both the company and the store operators
they’re putting a plaque up that they are a lucky store,” Kasha said
“How these (store operators) feel about their community and their opportunity to give back is really awesome to watch.”
Grocery Outlet, which has over 490 independently operated stores in 11 states
also selected 10 people to win free groceries for a year (valued at $6,000) and 20 people to win free groceries for a month (valued at $500)
Grocery Outlet gave away $550,000 in prizes
