WEDDINGTON, NC – A fuel air explosion is being blamed for causing damage to a home in Weddington and hurting two people.
The explosion happened on November 17, 2024 at a home on Steeple Chase Circle.
The Union County Fire Marshal’s Office says the fuel air explosion happened in the garage and was an accident.
A fuel air explosion is a type of explosive that mixes fuel with oxygen in the air to create a massive blast.
Investigators say they identified three potential sources of ignition, but they have not determined the exact cause.
Officials said two people were inside the home at the time of the explosion.

A woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Downtown Marion soon will welcome a new winery to town
Blend of Seven Winery
Owners Sandi and Steve Weddington are waiting for a final inspection by Liquor Control before announcing the grand opening
Once the inspection is completed and the liquor license transferred to the Marion location
Blend of Seven Winery will be able to open its doors
started their wine-making journey with a "date day" to a winery in 2008
and we both kind of just fell in love with the atmosphere," Sandi Weddington said
"And then we started doing a lot of winery hopping."
The two started making wine as a hobby at home
but soon realized they could make it a full-time job and thus
the couple opened their first location in Lewis Center
Over the next few years they moved twice more
landing them in their final location on Stratford Road in Delaware in 2015
that's where Blend of Seven Winery remained
The name Blend of Seven references the Weddingtons
who both had children before their marriage
the families of four and three became seven
I was washing dishes when you're not really thinking about it
and you blend wine," Sandi Weddington said
As Sandi and Steve Weddington have been getting older
"We're kind of like downsizing to start our retirement," she said
Even though they both are looking to retire in the next few years
they hope their children may step in to help out or they'll find a manager to run it in their stead
I'll come in and run it,'" Weddington said
"and then we can still kind of have our hands in it
as far as making the wine and doing things to help them
While they haven't lived in Marion in years
the Weddingtons still have friends and customers in town
Weddington said one of the things that attracted the couple back to Marion was the revitalization efforts going on downtown
"So it's really cool now to be part of the Strongest Town," she said
"So that's was a awesome thing for Marion to get
so hoping to help build on that for the town and for ourselves."
"A lot of our names are inspired by our kids or family or like sometimes we'll let some of our family members name them," Weddington said
All of the wines are crafted on-site and can be purchased in person or through the winery's online store
Blend of Seven Winery plans to host events throughout the year
a true crime podcaster will record an episode from the winery
Sandi Weddington said the winery also will host comedy and trivia nights once it gets up and running
While Blend of Seven will have some baked goods and treats for purchase
they won't serve food as they had at their previous location
the Weddingtons have been in conversation with surrounding restaurants to partner in providing food for delivery to Blend of Seven patrons
The grand opening date has not been finalized
but the Weddingtons hope to be open to the public before May

UNION CO., N.C. — A home exploded in Union County Sunday morning, injuring two people inside, according to deputies.
It happened at a home on Steeple Chase Circle in Weddington.
The Union County Sheriff’s office said they received numerous calls regarding the sound of an explosion just before 9 a.m.
When first responders got to the home, they said it had “severe damage.”
A man was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in critical condition, while a woman was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries, according to Union County Public Communications Director Liz Cooper. Both are expected to make a full recovery, according to The Associated Press.
The Union County Fire Marshal's Office said they will lead the investigation into what caused the blast, with an assist from Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

Chapel Hill High School (1-4) was in an uphill battle Friday — going up against the No
Head coach Andy Capone and the Warriors traveled all the way from Matthews and grabbed win number five on the season
The defending state champions wasted no time and grinded out a rushing touchdown up the middle during the first quarter from Chapel Hill’s 5-yard line— the result of junior running back Brody Anson’s legs
senior quarterback Gregory Fee slung a 49-yard pass down the left side of the field to senior wide receiver Javon Barber with two defenders crowding his bubble
making the catch and putting another 6 points on the scoreboard
“We’ve been missing the deep-ball and stretching the field a little bit earlier in the year,” Capone said about Fee and Barber’s touchdown play
“It was good to see a connection and him [Barber] going out there and getting it.”
during the third quarter junior quarterback Walker Powell took his turn in the pocket — and tossed a pass from Chapel Hill’s 14-yard line that was batted in the air but landed in the hands of junior wide receiver Kelson Tate
Tate broke a couple of tackles and found himself in the end zone
Tate exited the game due to a shoulder injury
Coach Capone’s team scored on 8 of their 9 total drives against the Tigers
Their only scoreless drive ended with a sack by Chapel Hill’s junior inside linebacker Silas Munday
The aerial attack was not the only offensive tactic that worked for the Warriors — the run game clicked too
sophomore running back Anthony Barrino ran for a 53-yard touchdown down the right side of the field from their own 47-yard line
After a successful field goal by junior Owen McNulty (who went 7/7 on extra point attempts)
the scoreboard read 28-0 with 11:51 left in the second quarter
The Warriors had a total of six running touchdowns and two passing touchdowns on the night from eight different players
For head coach Ryan Horton and the Chapel Hill Tigers
their first drive of the game saw a different look for the home team
Senior wide receiver Nik Demas took snaps and Roberson was at his natural running back position
Eventually, Chapel Hill’s head coach resorted back to Roberson at the quarterback position. The strategy gave them their first win of the season in Week 4 against Carrboro High School
Chapel Hill High School used the jet sweep on four different instances but found success off the edge one time — Oliaro found room for a gain of 15 yards during the second quarter
The closest Chapel Hill High School was able to get to Weddington’s end zone was at their opposing 49-yard line
This was the result of a pass interference on senior quarterback Josh Roberson’s pass to intended senior wide receiver Tyler Oliaro
“I can’t say enough about Josh — he’s the kid that will literally do anything you ask him to do,” Horton said about Roberson playing out of position
“He could’ve dropped his head and complained — it’s his senior year
he’s been one of best running backs in the conference.”
The Tigers will have one week off before returning to action on Friday
where they will begin conference play on the road against Jordan High School (3-1)
“I’m not a doctor but I’m hoping that to start conference we have a chance at getting one of them back,” Horton said
“We’re gonna prepare as if we won’t — we’re gonna prepare to go with who’s available.”
Weddington High School will face the number one team in South Carolina in Westside High School (4-0) next week on Friday
“We signed them up for it,” Capone said about facing the top ranked team south of North Carolina
“It will be a challenge and should be a great ball game.”
