Wolves were edged out and Huddersfield picked up first win but biggest victory is word that Newcastle will host again
Last year it was much more decisive given how it was played in mid-August, just weeks before the playoff began: but even here, on the May bank holiday weekend, Magic’s return to Newcastle felt hugely significant.
That was in part because it provided the sport with a welcome tonic from the endless boardroom politics, with the public also voting with their feet on how Newcastle should remain the permanent home of Magic into 2026 and beyond, with a crowd of 64,156, the biggest since 2018, in attendance: and the highest ever Sunday figure too.
Read moreBut there were plenty of storylines on the field too, as the regular season hurtles towards the midway point in 2025. There is now a clear trio at the summit, with the reigning Super League champions solidifying their place in that leading pack with a hard-fought win over Warrington
It is still slightly too early to suggest that trio are the only contenders for the Grand Final: but right now
the Leopards and the Warriors compared to their next closest rivals
Magic is a stage built for the biggest and best players to showcase their talent – and Wigan’s dynamic duo of Jai Field and Bevan French both crossed for wonderful tries here. That ultimately helped Wigan to have just enough against a Warrington side hit by injuries
but who showed plenty of spirit here but fell short
are one of a number of teams now falling behind the leading pack – three wins behind the trio already
the Wire are firmly entrenched in a battle for the other three playoff spots with six teams: who are now just split by a solitary victory
The debate over the strength of Super League’s high tackle laws has also begun to resurface
emphasised by the opening game of day two on Sunday
Huddersfield claimed their first win of the season at the 10th attempt with a 12-10 triumph over Hull
whose early-season promise is starting to falter slightly
It left Hull’s coach, John Cartwright, calling Knight and his side “dumb”. His counterpart, Luke Robinson – who had two players put on report for contact with the head – joined the growing calls for a greater level of understanding and common sense over the finer points of tackling in the modern era. Whether he is listened to remains unlikely.
Free weekly newsletterThe best of our sports journalism from the past seven days and a heads-up on the weekend’s action
But what of Magic in general? It is at this point in proceedings that we raise the question about what could or couldn’t happen next year. Murmurings of Super League potentially going to 14 teams in 2026 will not go away – but even then, Magic will remain on the calendar.
The Guardian understands that talks between Super League and officials in Newcastle had started even before this weekend. The healthy crowd will have only added further weight to the fact that the game will be back at St James’ Park in a year’s time.
In fact, this was the sixth-highest Magic Weekend crowd in history – and RL Commercial’s CEO, Rhodri Jones, revealed to the Guardian on Sunday afternoon that a decision to bring the event back to St James’ Park next year is a long way towards being finalised already: with no other venues under consideration. “Fans wanted to come back to Newcastle and the stakeholders here have been great,” Jones said. “The stadium is great and we’re delighted with the weekend and the attendance.
“It’s fair to say that positive conversations have already happened for next year.” In truth, it is difficult to imagine this event being anywhere else.

the Spurs held an introductory press conference for Johnson
during which Popovich made his first public appearance in front of cameras since his stroke
he took to the podium and thanked everyone for all their well wishes and noted that he's getting better by the day
but that it hasn't been enough to get back to where he needs to be to coach the team
Gregg Popovich speaks for the first time. He has all the confidence in new @spurs Head Coach Mitch Johnson. What a moment pic.twitter.com/5nEJAwvrM6
but there's a lot of thank yous after 25 or 30 years," Popovich said
I can never express the gratitude I have for so many people caring about our organization and sending me thoughts and prayers
but it's not good enough for what we plan ahead
people from the ticket office and people who put on a show during timeouts
everybody that has been dedicated to do their part to make us a successful and thriving organization
And that starts at the top with the Holt family
We will continue to do our best to do this with class
It's one of the reasons why Mitch Johnson will be taking over
because we have total faith in him to continue what's been started a long time ago."
He also made sure everyone knew what his new job title was
taking off a jacket to reveal a shirt that simply said "El Jefe."
"I'm no longer coach. I'm El Jefe."Gregg Popovich 😂 pic.twitter.com/AxVxqKTqzX
"I wanna make sure everyone understands what my new job is," Popovich said as he removed the jacket
He then turned around to show off the back of his shirt that said "Señor Popovich
President of Basketball Ops" while Duncan and Ginobili chuckled
cracking jokes and in good spirits and seemingly fairly good health
He is six months removed from his stroke and clearly he's still working his way back physically
but it's obvious his wit and dry sense of humor hasn't changed a bit
He may no longer be prowling the sidelines in San Antonio
but he left no doubt who the boss remains in the Spurs organization going forward

A pair of storm systems could fuel heavy rain and flooding across sections of the nation from the Desert Southwest to the East Coast this week
and some areas are bracing for the possibility of tornadoes or hail the size of tennis balls
“A slow-moving storm over the Central United States this week will act as the catalyst for a risk of severe thunderstorms and flooding rainfall,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said
shaped like the Greek letter omega − Ω − and can bring havoc to weather conditions
Some of the areas facing storms are already sodden from days of rain
The storms could tap into moisture out of the Gulf
prompting a risk for flooding and severe thunderstorms from Texas to the central Gulf Coast
An 'omega block' in atmosphere: Could bring chaotic weather for millions in US
∎ New York City could get more than 2 inches of rain through Tuesday and flash flooding is possible
∎ Houston could see thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 30 mph. "A few storms could become strong to severe, mainly west of I-45," the weather service said in a post on X
∎ New Orleans faces a "significant" threat of flash flooding Tuesday because of several rounds of heavy rainfall expected to slam the area
An omega block is ruling our weather: When will it finally budge?
Pennsylvania recovering from deadly stormsResidents in Western Pennsylvania were bracing for a line of powerful storms forecast to move through the region later Monday
Over 20,000 homes and businesses in Allegheny County
remained without power from brutal storms last week that left three people dead and more than 400,000 power customers in the dark
"The main threats will be damaging winds and large hail," the weather service office in Pittsburgh posted on X
"With the heavy rainfall over the past few days
Portions of West Texas and far eastern New Mexico could see large hailstones and possibly isolated tornadoes late Monday
Travelers along interstates 10 and 20 in Texas could face travel delays as storms ignite across the region
a heavy rain and thunderstorm pattern will sweep across eastern Texas
isolated tornadoes and flash flooding are possible Tuesday and Tuesday night
The city of Midland has only recorded 0.66 of an inch of rain so far this year
Normally the city has seen four times that amount by now
AccuWeather notes that any rain hitting West Texas will be beneficial but may run off the hard-baked soil

my Mom reached out from Florida to let me know that it’s “my sister and me
I stand corrected and apologies to my readers
The way to test the sentence is to take the other person out and see if it sounds correct
It would not be correct to say “and give I that beauty”
I must say I did not hear much support for the Hamlet ( at least not in its current iteration) at the Town Hall
It seems that those few who may lean toward it are worried about the alternative option of affordable/ low income housing
Why the citizens are being forced to accept such a choice is the real question here
Hartford now gets to tell every town in CT
It is not enough for the laws to protect people from unfair discrimination ( which is
now you may not discriminate based on ability to pay the market rates
the restaurants should have to feed anyone who wants to eat and the clothing stores should have to give you “affordable” designer clothes
I am still waiting for my waterfront mansion to provided
I do not agree that the needle is moving in favor of the development as proposed
I believe there were far more who spoke against the project AS PROPOSED
and many elected officials expressed many varied and significant concerns
I did hear nearly universal agreement to redevelop— but to do so differently
In my own comments I spoke favorably to the idea and intention of remediating this brownfield site and redeveloping
too complicated for an area that is contaminated
and serves as the main transit hub for the town
Anyone who hopes to develop this area will have to remediate the contamination
and is likely to get significant pass-through state funding to do so
Our town does not need to be coerced by the threat of 8-30g development to get this right
And were the area not to be developed why is it ok to have contaminated soil beneath what is presently there

the Pettis County Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) was executing a narcotics-related search warrant in the 27000 block of Route BB in the Longwood area
Deputies Mike DeHaven and Deputy Jacob Brown were injured and sent to area hospitals
Brown was treated and released at Bothwell
while DeHaven spent the weekend at MU Medical Center in Columbia
The case was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control
A Hero’s Procession was held Sunday afternoon to welcome both of them home
with a meet & greet held outside the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office
We asked Pettis County Sheriff Brad Anders to share his thoughts with us:
“We have two heroes who just came home
very thankful to have them here,” Anders said
adding that he can’t remember when the last time a Pettis County Deputy was shot in the line of duty
DeHaven and Brown received prompt medical care due to having paramedics on scene at the time of the incident
“They really got inside the hot zone and started applying all the lifesaving measures they can
and they did that fearlessly,” commented Sheriff Anders
The sheriff said that he witnessed phenomenal community support as the two deputies were escorted into Sedalia by dozens of law enforcement vehicles
and you see all of those people on the side of the road
We’re just absolutely honored to be in this community,” Anders told KSIS
He noted that Deputy Brown went full time with the department when Anders became Sheriff
Deputy DeHaven was a reserve officer at the time
making their injuries a personal one for him
“It’s that way with every deputy,” Anders stressed
“I was talking with some people the other day
and it’s like having 56 children who decided to get into law enforcement
Then every time something like this comes up
it takes years off your life worrying about them
and hoping everything’s going to be okay
I’m honored to be able to go with them a lot
just to be sure they’re going to be okay
It makes me feel better to be there.”
As for the injured deputies returning to duty
“They both have a long road ahead of them
We’re going to stand beside them and do everything we can to make sure they’re okay,” Sheriff Anders said
“From the moment we went down ‘til arriving here
we’ve been nothing but taken care of,” remarked DeHaven to the crowd
from the ambulance crews who took us to the hospitals
the hospital crews that were there day and night for us
There’s not a bad thing I can say about this experience
other than the actual event,” DeHaven stated
“We have felt the love of the community
we’re very fortunate to liv and work (here)
and very fortunate to have the friends and family that we have
and we really appreciate everyone’s love,” DeHaven said
Deputy DeHaven estimated that only three minutes elapsed between the time he was shot and the time a paramedic placed a tourniquet on him
a lot of good was seen in it,” DeHaven concluded
Deputy Brown credited the extensive training he received helped him get through this terrible experience
it could have been a lot different,” Brown told the crowd
“Everyone’s been extremely helpful.”
Sheriff Anders added that there were dozens and dozens of absolute heroes in the crowd gathered to honor DeHaven and Brown on Sunday afternoon
A Hero’s Procession was held Sunday afternoon to welcome both of them home, with a meet & greet held outside the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office.\nRead More
a victory of sorts for the notion of constitutional rights and due process and basic human decency
The United States (meaning: us) didn’t summarily toss a new mother and her newborn U.S. citizen infant out of the country without first giving her a chance to be heard
You will recall that President Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to close the border and “launch the largest deportation program of criminals in the history of America.”
that program had the Trump administration making plans to quickly deport a 24-year-old Guatemalan woman straight from the hospital maternity ward
gave birth in Tucson under federal guardThe woman
illegally crossed the border early last week in a desolate stretch of the Sonoran Desert
carrying only a water bottle and her unborn child
taken to Tucson Medical Center where she gave birth to a 6-pound baby girl she named Emily
as Customs and Border Patrol agents stood guard outside her door
with federal agents telling Tucson attorney Luis Campos on May 1 that she was targeted for fast-track removal — with or without her newborn — and thus had no right to legal counsel
who had been alerted to the case by someone who knew what was going on
said he was advised by federal agents that he couldn’t speak with the woman without a signed G-28 form
But the agents also wouldn’t let Campos or a member of the hospital staff give her the form to sign
That same day, a CBP spokesman told the Arizona Daily Star that the woman was facing expedited removal and would be given the choice to take her newborn daughter with her when she was deported or leave the baby in the country
Erika was discharged from the hospital on the afternoon of May 2, without her child
and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Things changed when Democratic politicians and the public got wind of what was going on
have a fundamental right to due process that has been reaffirmed by the Supreme Court as recently as April 7
2025,” Tucson Mayor Romero said in the statement to the Star
“Denying this mother access to legal representation is both inhumane and a violation of her basic rights.”
“The office is actively engaging with federal and local officials to gather further information,” Gov. Katie Hobbs’ office said in a statement to KOLD
Governor Hobbs has been clear in her opposition to inhumane immigration enforcement practices.”
and over the weekend when CBP placed Erika into normal deportation proceedings and Campos was allowed to talk to her to get her story
How she fled violence in her home country and entered the country near the Tres Bellotas Ranch
How she walked for two days in the desert before being apprehended about 50 miles south of Tucson
Erika was reunited with Emily and released from custody
“The woman was transferred to ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations with a court date to appear before an immigration judge,” a CBP spokesman told reporters on May 3
who in January declared an “invasion” at the border and suspended the right of immigrants to request asylum
as well as those arrested elsewhere who can’t prove they’ve been here at least two years
now get the bum’s rush out of the country — no court hearings needed
Opinion: Kari Lake says no one is above the law, except Trump
about what would prompt a heavily pregnant woman to risk both her own and her unborn baby’s lives
in search of an asylum she surely knew would never be granted in the not-quite United States of Trump
That is the law of the land until Trump decides that the “invasion” is over
Or until America wakes up and understands what is really happening here

Polansky says that when people arrive at the park
saying this will be a front door for the park
People will be able to take a tour by going into the welcome center

Meow Moments: Welcome to Campus is a new DLC for Meow Moments: Celebrating Together, and yet another fun addition to the Hidden Animals (well
In Welcome to Campus, the new DLC for Meow Moments: Celebrating Together
We have a fun and detailed scene from a school campus where we can see different school and university activities – study sessions
and students rushing to class or mingling around
humans and other critters engaged in the pursuit of knowledge
from deep discussions under shady trees to celebrating new discoveries in the lab
The art is beautiful as usual and has plenty of Easter eggs to look out for
finding everything is still plenty of challenge
you can use one of the three magnifying lenses on top of the screen: one for kittens
one for people and critters and one for balloons
so you only need to wait a few seconds for them to recharge
you can click on the clue and change the object you are seeking to another
There are basic settings like audio and video
A new option is choosing the style of the clues – should they include details from around the object you are seeking
Meow Moments- Welcome to Campus doesn’t add any new Steam achievements or trading cards
Welcome to Campus is a fun addition to an already fun game. Besides a new scene, it also adds new elements to play around with in the level creator. If the developers keep delivering new DLCS with this quality, Meow Moments will surely become a go-to hub for hidden object/ kitten games. In any case, it’s a game that is more than worth it for fans of the genre.

King Philippe of Belgium was given a red carpet welcome and a military ceremony in Prague on Monday afternoon
The King is visiting the Czech Republic to take part in a ceremony commemorating the liberation of the city of Pilsen
the King was greeted by Czech president Petr Pavel and dozens of Czech soldiers at a formal reception at Prague Castle
a monumental palace complex that overlooks the centre of Prague from a hilltop
which was closed to tourists for the occasion
is also the official residence and workplace of the Czech President
which included the national anthems of both countries
was followed by talks between the two leaders
The King was also presented with a framed photograph of his meeting with Vaclav Havel
the country's first president after the fall of the communist regime
King Philippe travelled to the Czech Republic to take part in a ceremony commemorating the liberation of the city of Pilsen
Tuesday marks exactly 80 years since a Belgian battalion helped drive Nazi troops out of the city
It is also the first time that a Belgian and a Czech head of state will attend the commemoration of this event together
the city was liberated by the American army with the assistance of the 17th Belgian Fusilier Battalion
This battalion consisted of volunteers from the province of Liège
all former members of the Secret Army resistance group
Pilsen is one of the few Czech cities not liberated by Soviet troops at the end of the Second World War
following the Velvet Revolution that ended communist rule in the former Czechoslovakia
that the liberation began to be celebrated
The last Belgian veteran passed away in 2023
but family members of the 17th Battalion veterans are expected to attend the commemoration in Pilsen on Tuesday
King Philippe's visit partly coincides with a two-day visit by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to the Czech Republic
the Ukrainian flag at Prague Castle had to be replaced by the Belgian flag shortly before 14.00 on Monday

The Waimea High School girls flag football team and coaches were welcomed home from the state tournament by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, Council Chair Mel Rapozo, Council \member Fern Holland, and a lot of happy and excited parents, relatives and friends at the Lihue Airport on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
The Waimea High School girls flag football team, garbed in the official state tournament shirt, get together to render the Waimea alma mater as Coach Jason Caldeira and his coaching staff watch and Council member Fern Holland films at the Lihue Airport on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Members of the Waimea High School girls football team arrived home on Sunday from the 2025 Hawaii Dental Service Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Flag Football State Championships that wrapped up Saturday night on Oahu, where the Campbell Sabers edged Leleihua, 6-0, for the first state championship since the program inaugurated.
The Menehune, under head coach Jason Caldeira, received the No. 5 seed to the state tournament after clinching the Central Pacific Bank Kauai Interscholastic Federation by a single point, 7-6 over a powerful Red Raider squad.
Waimea ran head-on against Punahou that shut out the West Side girls, 20-0, sending the Menehune to the consolation bracket where they faced Hilo in the first match in that bracket play.

“The girls were good,” said a Waimea fan who accompanied the team from Kauai. “They always had the largest fan base. Every family and relatives living on Oahu must’ve come out to support the girls!”
Moving through the consolation bracket, Waimea shut down the Hilo Vikings 19-0 to stay alive in the double elimination tournament. They continued on the ladder with a 19-13 victory over the Hawaii Preparatory Academy before being shut down, 25-0, by Waianae High School on Saturday.
“The girls were strong,” said the Kauai fan who came home Saturday night. “Against two schools, they looked like a big school. People were surprised they came from a small school on Kauai’s West Side.”
Included in the crowd greeting the first-ever Kauai girls football team, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami came with his construction hardhat emblazoned with a “W” and Council Chair Mel Rapozo, and Councilmember Fern Holland blended in with the armload of lei and posters.
“These girls have played their hearts out and deserve to be recognized for their incredible win on Kauai,” said Therilynn Martin-Haumea with the Office of Economic Development. “Whether they win or lose on Oahu, they will always be the first Kauai champions!”
Kawakami presented Caldeira with a proclamation that read in part, “2025 marks the historic launch of Girls’ Flag Football as an official sport in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation (and the HHSAA), offering a new and meaningful opportunity for young women to showcase their athleticism, leadership and team spirit.”
“The Waimea High School Girls’ Flag Football Team has made history by becoming the inaugural KIF Girls’ Flag Football Kauai Island Champions, representing excellence on and off the field,” Kawakami said.
The proclamation said the team was a source of inspiration for what can be accomplished when women are given equal opportunities to compete and excel in sports.
“This historic achievement marks a significant step forward in the growth of girls’ sports on Kauai, fostering a spirit of inclusivity, empowerment and leadership for women in our community and in the world of athletics,” the proclamation read.

They were raised on stories of spaceships soaring between the stars
and they grew up to see the space shuttle explode and humankind abandon the moon
They grew up expecting flying cars and robot servants
but as they reached middle age they were still trundling along the ground and doing their own laundry
Source: Jason CrawfordLimited by energy scarcity, humanity’s innovative efforts switched from atoms to bits; “technology” in 1970-2010 was defined by computers, software, and the internet. In 2011, Paul Krugman and Tyler Cowen were writing that the appliances in their kitchen hadn’t changed since they were children
Science fiction writers anticipated this shift quite early on
The “cyberpunk” writers of the 1980s and 1990s — William Gibson
and many others — didn’t envision a future entirely devoid of hardware innovations
but most of what they envisioned for the 21st century centered around advances in the internet
That was the future I grew up expecting — a neon-drenched
mostly earthbound world where humans would mingle with robots
Instead of bold space explorers firing ray guns at alien conquerors
the heroic figures of my fantasies were hackers and street samurai
battling the nefarious plots of shadowy corporations
I actually lived to see the future I imagined as a kid
reality began to conform to the cyberpunk visions I grew up with
Though I’ll still go back and read some stuff from the 80s and 90s
I stopped reading new cyberpunk about a decade ago
Around that time it became clear that the pace of real technological change had overtaken authors’ imaginations; newly written cyberpunk fiction began to feel retrofuturistic
like someone writing about the present and getting it wrong
Meanwhile all I had to do to see fantastic techno-futures unfold around me was to read the news
a giant animated sphere has loomed over the city of Las Vegas
occasionally taking the form of a titanic blinking eyeball:
Open up the video app on your pocket computer
and you can see videos of humanoid robots shooting machine guns at a metal-coated “cybertruck”:
(The video is CGI. But you can see real humanoid robots walking around our college campuses.)
Meanwhile, self-driving robot cars increasingly fill our streets. Here’s a photo I shot from the window of my own robot car, of a very different-looking type of robot car that I had never seen before:
It has become absolutely normal to see security robots of all shapes and sizes rolling through parks and shopping centers, mute sentinels with their camera eyes spinning
Police departments are beginning to use robots too — the Denver Police Department has a bomb-sniffing robot dog that also tries to get criminals to surrender to it:
Except in a few cities, robots aren’t ubiquitous yet, but they’re already generating some pretty cyberpunk stories. In Moscow, there were reports of a dog robot that was found selling drugs on the street, and shut itself down and wiped its memory when the police grabbed it . And here was an alert from a couple of years ago:
the skies of our world have come alive with new kinds of low-flying aircraft
People are getting packages delivered by drones:
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more cyberpunk video than this documentary about a Ukrainian drone pilot:
The Ukrainians are even offering video-game-like incentives for drone pilots
Drones are currently winning the war against electronic countermeasures, and when they become autonomous in the near future
Here’s an impressive-looking video (which still falls far short of what’s actually coming in terms of actual capabilities):
(Meanwhile, I don’t know if they’ll be useful, but China has military drones that look like birds — something right out of the opening scene of John Shirley’s Eclipse.)
And the new aircraft are carrying humans around as well
Air taxis are soaring across the skyscraper forests of Chinese cities:
And at least one company will sell you a hoverbike that you can pilot yourself:
But if robots and drones are bringing cyberpunk to life in the streets around us, the advent of AI has turned the online space weirder than any except the most creative among us could have imagined.
But the most cyberpunk AI story I’ve seen so far is probably when a man’s AI girlfriend was named as his accomplice in a plot to assassinate the Queen of England
As for body modifications, those are arriving more slowly than cyberpunk predicted. But a paralyzed man has a Neuralink implant that lets him multitask with a bunch of brain-controlled devices:
And an engineer named Ian Davis made himself a prosthetic hand:
Neural interface technologies are proliferating, as are new generations of wearable computer interfaces. Bionic eyes are getting better and better
It’s not just that cyberpunk predicted the ways we’d use technology
It did an amazing job at anticipating the aesthetics and the feel of a world in which
Anyone who read cyberpunk as a kid probably knew
that there would be people who looked like this (I recommend clicking through to the video):
There are plenty of other examples around
it was Japan that was the neon-drenched “country of the future”
Wells and Jules Verne have science fiction fans gotten to live to see their dreams come alive like this
That’s pretty amazing, if you think about it. For that world to materialize required a lot of key breakthrough inventions — deep learning, generative AI, lithium-ion batteries, rare-earth magnets
and others — that were in no way preordained
The cyberpunk writers got very lucky — and they also probably got some help from technologists themselves
who strove to create the wonders they read about as kids
But while I’m grateful to be able to see all of those marvels come to life
The “punk” in cyberpunk comes from the gritty
compromised feel of the future the writers envisioned
Mid-century authors had usually imagined an “onward and upward” path of ever-increasing state capacity — galactic federations and empires
But the cyberpunks usually depicted worlds where governments were either hapless and weak — sharing power with corporations
And where mid-century authors often depicted thriving middle classes who could afford to access futuristic wonders
cyberpunk worlds are typically rife with inequality
where the best tech is only available to a select few
Cyberpunk worlds are not necessarily fun ones to live in
even if you’re an ace hacker with a trenchcoat and mirrorshades
The cyberpunks authors’ social extrapolations were a bit more hit-or-miss than their technological visions
heavily armed quasi-state actors of 80s/90s fiction
Instead they’re all under the thumb of national governments
And inequality, while certainly a problem, isn’t as pervasive as the cyberpunks envisioned. Only the rich can afford embryo selection, but the middle class has all the latest gadgets, and poor people in America have smartphones and can use ChatGPT for free. The world, too, has become much more economically equal and much more prosperous; some developing countries are still mired in squalor
Worryingly, only authoritarian governments like China seem to have been able to keep a lid on the roiling social conflicts and meme wars that social media has given rise to. That raises the disturbing possibility that the information technologies of the cyberpunk age tip the scales of power toward authoritarianism
The dark visions of future politics common to so many cyberpunk novels — weak
strong effective government in autocracies — might end up coming to pass after all
we’ll do our best to fight against all of these modern challenges
just like we fought against the totalitarian governments
pollution and alienation of the 20th century
there’s no guarantee we’ll win that struggle
the Future might end up being just as gritty
and nihilistic as the cyberpunks’ darker visions
but there’s always another future that comes after that

P.S. - It’s kind of spooky how much the photo of the Ukrainian drone pilot from the top of this post looks like the cover art from William Gibson’s Neuromancer:
When I say “fantasy physics”
I don’t mean “things we’ll never figure out how to do”
Someday we may figure out warp drive or gravity control
OpenAI’s o3 model — also helped me write this post
in case there were any key works I hadn’t read
It helped me do a search for cyberpunk-esque stories in the news
And it helped me map various new technologies to the authors who first predicted them
This is basically the plot of Geoff Ryman’s novel Air.
We got the fictional future, but it was covered in the gross goop of reality, and that made it lame.
Edit: We even got nanomachines, but they were just enzymes in our laundry powder, because that turned out to be what nanomachines actually were.

the A’s return to Sacramento looking to do damage against the AL West leading Seattle Mariners
The A’s have played very well since mid-April and are now in second place behind the Mariners
so there’s much for A’s fans to celebrate at the moment
But if you’re a worrywart, you might still be in shock from Saturday’s disastrous finish from Mason Miller; that’s not a good state of mind in which to calmly regard the very brutal stretch the A’s have ahead of them this month: their next three series are against current division leaders
but I believe the A’s will put up a good fight—and there are plenty of reasons for optimism about this team
even if their star closer has proven less than invincible
First off, the A’s starting pitching is trending up again: Jeffrey Springs was brilliant in his most recent start as was newcomer Gunnar Hogland in his MLB debut
JP Sears is pumping strikes as consistently as ever and has possibly leveled up a bit
as well: he’s posted a 2.94 ERA through six starts and is issuing walks at well below his career average rate
The bullpen may have shown some cracks recently
but Justin Sterner has also continued to emerge as a terrific setup man; he’s yet to allow a run this season
It is a bit dissapointing to see Miller stumble just as Sterner is arriving as the closer’s perfect companion
His 4.97 ERA ain’t pretty but I think we can all agree his 2.35 FIP is more representative of his caliber
The Reaper was 10-for-10 in save opportunities before Saturday
Oh yeah—and Nick Kurtz finally got an extra base hit
there is much to like about this year’s Athletics so far
But keeping up the pace through the rest of the month will definitely be a challenge

"The man was trying to sleep outside the church," said RCMP media relations officer Const
Responding RCMP advised the man he had to move along and off the property
