Mo.—Road construction has begun just west of US-61 on Wentzville Parkway as part of the Wentzville Parkway Turn Lane Phase 2A.
Crews are repaving and widening the road between Meyer Road and Parkway Ridge Boulevard
A sidewalk and multi-use trail with continuous lighting will be constructed on the north and south sides of the roadway
motorist may expect a bottleneck of traffic as the road will be reduced down to one lane in each direction for most of the project
Wentzville encourages motorist to seek alternate routes until later this year
The construction is a part of the city’s Capital Improvement Plan 2025
Mercy has begun construction on a 75-bed hospital in Wentzville that will soon serve the region’s booming west suburbs
The facility will be built less than a half-mile from where Interstates 70 and 64 converge at Highway 61 in St. Charles County. Workers have cleared a 60-acre property previously filled with trees and started constructing a utility building, the first steps of what will eventually be a $650 million facility
The Catholic health system has been consulting with residents about what they would like to see offered at the new hospital
said Community Operations Senior Vice President David Argueta
“They're excited about that care closer to home
interested in what kind of services that might entail,” he said
“Emergency care has been something that has been at the top of everyone's list
They want to make sure that every component of our care model is available to them.”
Mercy executives on Thursday morning used shiny shovels decorated with large bows to sift around brightly colored dirt in a ceremonial groundbreaking at the property
used an aspergillum to shake holy water on the ground and on the attendants
He blessed the workers who would be constructing the hospital and those who would soon work there
Architectural renderings of the future grounds show a slightly boomerang-shaped hospital with glass walls around five stories high
The new hospital will give patients a “frictionless experience,” said Mercy President and CEO Steve Mackin
“We have a sense of their needs as they come in
and then we can use kind of a digital experience to help move them from appointment to another,” he said
and we should be able to take that information to be able to more proactively and predictably serve them.”
The state health department had to confirm the need for another hospital in the region before Mercy could begin to build
a process that health system officials said was completed in record time
Charles County Council member Mike Elam said it seems every other day a new business in the area is cutting a ribbon
“If you look at everything that's going on west of Wentzville
even out to Foristell and the large double interchange that they're putting in out there
you're going to see a ton of growth,” he said
“There is so much that continues to move westward.”
He said he’s heard of residents driving a half-hour or more to get to hospitals farther east
and it's so nice to have this right here in our community,” he said
you want to get to that quality of care as quickly as possible
Mercy officials say that because the new hospital’s 60-acre property is large
the health system could eventually add other services

Mercy saw potential in a sprawling 60-acre site at the intersection of interstates 64 and 70 in Wentzville
“The Sisters have always seen beyond what is – to what could be,” said Steve Mackin
“Mercy Wentzville is the next chapter in that legacy – bringing health and hope to one of the fastest-growing communities in our region as envisioned nearly two decades ago.”
Plans for Mercy Hospital Wentzville include 75 inpatient acute care beds and a 26-bed emergency department with two trauma areas and four behavioral health rooms
The campus will offer a broad range of inpatient and outpatient care to the region
including surgical and specialty options such as cardiovascular
cancer and orthopedics as well as outpatient imaging

The Wentzville Church of God located at 9970 State Highway N
CHARLES COUNTY — A small rural church here has been entangled in a yearslong legal fight with St
Charles County over allegations the county illegally charged it property taxes — and when the congregation didn’t pay up
the county sold the land out from under it
The dispute has locked the Wentzville Church of God out of its building
our piano is in there,” said Catherine McKee
How are we supposed to have a church service without our things?”
The one-story building at the corner of Morton Lane and Highway N was the Wentzville Church of God’s home for almost 50 years
But a longstanding dispute with the county and the property’s new owner has taken the church from the congregation
the congregation may lose the fight once and for all — just as the neighborhood becomes a hotbed of new home construction
Congregations typically don’t pay property taxes on their churches
Charles County officials claim that Wentzville Church of God failed to return its tax-exempt renewal notice in 2017
The four-page form asks the organization to submit
and what happens to it if the organization dissolves
The county sends these renewal notices every five to seven years
County officials say they called and even visited the church
but couldn’t figure out if it was still active
Charles County Assessor Travis Welge said the church “could never provide anything to prove it was in operation and actively used for services.”
So the county reclassified the building as a single-family home
the county sold the property for back taxes
whose address is a mailbox inside a copy and print center in an O’Fallon strip mall
but said the owner had no comment for this story
Attorneys for the church and for Magellanic Seven did not respond to interview requests
Church leaders said they never got their tax-exempt renewal notice
didn’t know the tax status had changed until they owed thousands
tried to get county officials to rescind the bills
“They railroaded us,” Catherine McKee said of the county
Wentzville Church of God was founded in 1968
It’s part of an association of 58 other Missouri churches known as the Church of God that have about 3,500 members statewide
The group has several congregations in the St
Congregations within the group are independent: They own their own buildings and make key decisions — like picking a pastor — locally
The Wentzville congregation was in good standing with the national and state office
the association’s state administrative pastor
McKee said they held regular worship services on Sundays
They also partnered with other congregations and allowed community groups to meet in their fellowship hall
They had 20-25 regular attendees each Sunday
Leaders contested the tax bills each year after they lost tax-exempt status
and repeatedly asked the county to withdraw or cancel the bills
the county and Magellanic Seven have been in court in multiple lawsuits over several years
Magellanic sued the county to get a clear title on the church’s property
but in March 2025 the Eastern District Court of Appeals upheld the ruling against the Wentzville Church of God
Magellanic sued the church to evict the congregation from the building
but the Court of Appeals in February 2025 upheld the eviction
Judge Deborah Alessi ruled in Magellanic’s favor
saying the church was trying to re-litigate a decided case after losing its appeal
“They took our property from us — that’s the bottom line,” said the church’s pastor
Since the county sold the property in 2019
the McKees say the congregation has not been able to meet — missing five years of Christmases and Easter services

Magellanic has countersued the church for damages
Magellanic attorneys describe the church as “unrelentingly litigious” and say leaders there refuse to accept the outcome of the court proceedings
“There is no good faith basis for recycling the same facts and same legal claims
and refiling them,” attorneys for Magellanic wrote
the claims made by Wentzville Church are factually and legally frivolous in that these legal issues have been previously raised and decided — Wentzville Church just did not like the results.”
It is unclear what Magellanic Seven plans to do with the property
which is currently zoned for agriculture uses
window shades pulled down in the sanctuary area
The church’s telephone number is still active
Charles County Planning & Zoning officials said there are no active development or rezoning requests for the property
which is adjacent to three large-scale residential developments that are under construction
One development, Autumn Hollow, features more than 460 homes, while two other developments, Harvest at Hopewell and Villages at Post Farms
are expected to add more than 1,200 homes to this growing area of rural St
Charles County Council it would add an additional 87 homes
The McKees said the congregation had plans to raze the Wentzville Church of God’s 3,800-square-foot existing building and build a new one there
But now the “plans are at a standstill” while the church awaits a conclusion to its lawsuit
A case management conference has been scheduled for July 28
“The property is ours,” said Catherine McKee
“God in heaven knows they stole it from us.”

Mo.—Mercy Hospital’s new $650 million Wentzville campus is expected to complete construction in 2029
Community leaders and hospital officials broke ground on the 60-acre site Thursday
“We’re talking about a place where families don’t have to travel to get the healthcare that they need,” said Mike Elam
“Look right out there and look at the largest award MODOT has ever made… combine it with what Mercy is doing right here
but the quality of life change that is going to create for everyone.”
The 425,000-square-foot hospital will include 75 inpatient beds
The town’s population growth has somewhat outpaced development
leaving a prominent gap in local healthcare
About 20% of Wentzville residents travel to St
Louis for regular and emergency hospital visits
The new hospital will create more than one thousand jobs and boost the local economy
“It is the second biggest investment in our community,” Guccione said
it will bring other attention to the community… we usually have a little issue with projects
We had nothing to discuss and we’re very excited.”
Mercy officials say the facility will use cutting-edge technology to treat patients efficiently
personalized care in near real time,” said Dr
“Every Mercy patient in every facility has the benefit of having their x-rays
it triages images for our radiologists so they can assess the patients with the most need
and shows us incidental findings that they otherwise will miss
…The incredible residential and economic growth of this here area will soon have the healthcare infrastructure they need to continue to foster that growth.”
The Mercy Hospital Wentzville campus will be located near I-70 and I-64 on East Pitman Avenue
It will be Missouri’s first acute-care hospital built in nearly a decade
Louis-based architecture firm CannonDesign and McCarthy Building and Construction will lead the project
which is expected to be complete in four years.
The Francis Howell and Wentzville school districts
which have been at the center of culture war battles in recent years
will have more progressive leadership on their school boards this spring
Amy Gryder and Sarah Oelke will be the newest elected members of the Francis Howell School Board
Jeremy Way will join the Wentzville School Board
while board Vice President Julie Scott retained her seat for another term
Gryder and Oelke were endorsed by progressive-leaning Francis Howell Forward
which describes itself as a nonpartisan political action committee that advocates for protecting public schools
is a teacher in the Parkway School District
Gryder is a Francis Howell graduate and now a parent — two of her children graduated from Francis Howell North High School
and her youngest attends Barnwell Middle School
Oelke thanked voters for choosing her to help lead the district
“Our voters sent a clear and resounding message: we are ready to move past the distractions of the ‘culture wars’ and focus on what truly matters—our students
and the future of our schools,” Oelke said
“We are tired of the “noise” and ready to move beyond the baseless fears that have been impairing our progress.”
Gryder said she appreciates the confidence voters placed in her and thanked everyone who cast a ballot — even those who didn’t vote for her
“Thank you to all of the voters who came out and got engaged,” Gryder said
“It’s really important that we have people paying attention to what’s going on at the local level.”
The Francis Howell School District recently hired Mike Dominguez as its superintendent
The district is no stranger to controversy: Last year, the board voted to prohibit teachers from discussing gender identity in the classroom and rolled out a newly revised curriculum on Black history and literature
The Wentzville School District has been scrutinized for similar cultural flashpoints in public education
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the board voted in March to remove the book “Sold,” which discusses child sex trafficking and was available to students in school district libraries
have said they want to bring the focus back to supporting students and teachers and away from politics
Both candidates were endorsed by Community Allies for Public Education Success and St. Charles County Families for Public Education — organizations that support funding public schools
Scott thanked the community for turning out to vote and said she’s “ready to get started.” She is the current board vice president and has two children enrolled in the Wentzville district
Way said he’s looking forward to bringing his experience as both a teacher and longtime school administrator to the board
Way is an assistant superintendent in the Wright City R-II School District and plans to retire this summer
“I have nothing but love and respect for everybody in public [education],” Way said
“The things they do behind the scenes every day is incredible
and I’ve had the opportunity to see that for most of my adult life.”

(First Alert 4) - All westbound lanes of Interstate 64 were shut down Thursday for a vehicle fire
according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol
according to the Missouri Department of Transportation
a fire broke out in the trailer of a semi-truck
This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available
FORISTELL, Mo.— An eager crowd of Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) staff, Missouri politicians and onlookers, gathered in Foristell for a MoDOT ceremonious groundbreaking of the second Improve I-70 project: Warrenton to Wentzville
“This is a national freight corridor,” said Ed Hassinger
“This is going to have huge implications for the state as a whole but it’s also the main street for these cities and counties that we’re going through.”
crews will add a third lane to both westbound and eastbound I-70 between Wentzville and Warrenton and repave existing lanes too
They’ll realign I-70 at the railroad bridge between Wentzville and Route Z
“You only have to get stuck in traffic from 64 to 70 on a Friday night one time to realize something’s got to get done here,” said Senator Travis Fitzwater
Chair for the Missouri Senate Committee for transportation
He also was referred to as “instrumental” in acquiring funding for the project
I-64 between I-70 and route K is to be widened and various improvements to interchanges and outer roads are planned as well. The bridge in Foristell will be replaced. For more information, click here
this is the first one in the country for us to be at this point to put six lanes through here from coast to coast of Missouri,” said Dustin Boatwright
It’s a generational opportunity and we’re so blessed to have this opportunity.”
Warren County’s presiding commissioner said the changes will have a big impact beyond traffic flow and safety
“The enhancements will ensure smoother traffic flow
our roads will be much safer,” said Joe Gildehaus
“But the project is more than just this infrastructure
It’s about investing in the future of Warren County
Improved transportation means better access to roads throughout our county
attracting new businesses and creating jobs for our residents
This we also strengthen our position in the state
The $600 million project is contracted to the Improve 70 Alliance
a group of four contractors: Emery Sapp and Sons
MoDOT held public meetings earlier this year taking in public comment
This helped lead to the build team’s commitment to keeping two lanes open both ways during peak traffic hours while they fulfill the construction contract
The Warrenton to Wentzville stretch is expected to be completed by late 2028
Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville was outlined by MoDOT earlier this month
amongst other planned projects beginning this summer

Roughly 460 United Auto Workers at the Lear seating assembly plant in Wentzville went on strike early Monday morning after the company and union failed to reach an agreement during contract negotiations
“Since we did not make any headway on some of the big issues
the membership said they wanted to walk and go on strike,” said UAW Local 282 President Bill Hugeback
Lear supplies seats for several makes of cars including those manufactured at the nearby General Motors plant
Hugeback said the repetitive nature of the work at Lear’s facility has led to union workers with injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome and others to their elbows
“Some of the big issues are health and safety and some production standards,” he said
“A lot of that has to do with injuries that happen to our folks.”
Production worker Dennis Robinson has been at the plant close to two years and suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands
as well as an issue with his shoulder “from excessive repetitive work.”
“The job is designed to work five days a week
Hugeback and other workers at the picket line listed better compensation
health insurance coverage and retirement benefits as drivers of the strike
He noted companies up and down the car supply chain have been posting large profits
“It’s pretty much all the same,” Hugeback said
“These companies have been raking in record profits for years
and now it’s time for the American workers to stand up
“It would be something different if they weren’t making such record profits
but they’re not wanting to share,” she said
“They need to share with us because everybody works on our little backs.”
Lear said the company has negotiated in good faith with the UAW to reach a new agreement for its Wentzville facility and “stands firm” in supporting its employees
“We pride ourselves on our successful relationships with our employees and union partners,” the statement continues
“We remain committed to reaching an agreement that will benefit all parties.”
The strike at this single production facility comes after large UAW strikes earlier this year at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis won workers at those plants significant raises
Now UAW workers in other parts of the car supply chain want similar adjustments
“We’re needing a raise,” said facility worker Kieth Bevel
“Everybody is getting a raise around the UAW
Bevel said he loves his work at Lear but emphasized how he and his coworkers need more compensation
Workers at the plant make around $25 an hour now
but some on the picket line said they want to see upward of $35 an hour in a new contract
“We know the work that we put out is definitely worth that,” he said
the nearby Wentzville GM plant has been affected by the parts shortages resulting from the strike at Lear
“We hope both sides work quickly to resolve their issues so we can resume our regular production schedule to support our customers,” GM said

midsize truck plant is down as the automaker awaits the end of a labor dispute at the plant's seat supplier plant owned by Lear Corp
Five hundred Lear workers represented by United Auto Workers Local 282 are on strike "for their fair share," UAW Region 4 Director Brandon Campbell said in a statement
“The company has had plenty of time to make things right
but instead spent half a billion dollars on stock buybacks and dividends last year," Campbell said
"Now Wentzville Assembly is down thanks to Lear’s refusal to bargain a fair deal.”
GM spokesperson Kevin Kelley on Monday confirmed the plant "was impacted by part shortages resulting from a labor dispute at one of our suppliers
We hope both sides work quickly to resolve their issues so we can resume our regular production schedule to support our customers."
Lear said the union informed the company late Sunday that it would strike
“We have negotiated in good faith with the UAW for some time to reach a new collective bargaining agreement for our Wentzville
adding it "stands firm in supporting our employees and the communities in which we operate
With over 100 years in the automotive industry
we pride ourselves on our successful relationships with our employees and union partners
We remain committed to reaching an agreement that will benefit all parties.”

That unsettling passage, early in the award-winning novel “Sold,” foreshadows the nightmarish ordeal ahead for Lakshmi
The 13-year-old Nepalese girl is subsequently shipped off to India and sold into sexual slavery by her stepfather
American journalist Patricia McCormick’s book has been lauded as a moving
accessible and well-researched look inside third-world sex trafficking for audiences that might otherwise remain ignorant about that hellscape
But for students of the Wentzville School District
that window of knowledge has once again been slammed shut
Based on a complaint by exactly one parent
followed by a one-vote margin on the school board
the district last week officially banned the book from its school libraries
It’s not the first book the busy censors of the district have banished. They made humiliating national news a few years ago by briefly yanking the Toni Morrison literary classic “The Bluest Eye“ from shelves
But this removal is notable in that the book
tells the story of a real-life tragedy in the world today
in straightforward prose without vulgarity or gratuitousness
but sex trafficking is a real phenomenon that some of today’s students will someday have the power to confront as future leaders on the national and world stages
Yet even a recommendation by the district’s own review committee that the book remain on high school library shelves and only be shielded from lower grades was rejected by the board
Wentzville’s hair-trigger book-banning process in particular is an open invitation to any random culture-warrior to muzzle discussion of serious topics
All it takes to require a review of a book is a complaint from one parent who doesn’t want anyone to have such discussions
requires a review of the book by a committee of teachers
which makes a recommendation to the school board
The board is free to ignore that recommendation
the board bypassed the judgment of parents and others on the committee
who reported that the book is “a beautiful story to show the main character’s resilience to get back to her family” and that it avoids obscenity or raunchiness
The board sided instead with the original parent-complainant — who, as the Post-Dispatch’s Monica Obradovic reported this week
blithely refers on social media to books she dislikes as “disgusting smut.”
It’s telling how often the books that end up being banned these days
focus on issues related to racial or cultural minorities
The empathetic protagonist in “Sold,” like the empathetic protagonist in “The Bluest Eye,” is a girl of color
Censorship trends reflect political trends
When liberal politics was ascendant in earlier eras
“The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was a frequent target of censors who myopically focused on its offensive use of the n-word
a complaint that missed its broader message of racial tolerance
racial tolerance itself is targeted by censors appeasing right-wing ideologues who disparage almost any discussion of race at all as “woke” or “DEI.” That definitely serves a certain kind of agenda out there — but not any agenda that involves a well-rounded education for kids about the world they will inherit
A recurring theme in “Sold” is about the voicelessness of sex trafficking victims
Giving voice to such victims is a noble function of serious literature like this
Muzzling those voices at the behest of any culture-war crank who can fill out a form shouldn’t be the function of a school board
the author of “Sold,” based her novel on interviews she conducted with girls in India and Nepal who had been sold into slavery
Fresh controversies erupt around Missouri politico who is now top DC prosecutor

The United Auto Workers union shut down a strike by nearly 500 Lear Corporation auto parts workers in Wentzville
announcing it had reached a tentative agreement with the company
Louis-area factory had quickly led to production stoppages at the nearby General Motors Wentzville Assembly plant
Workers should reject the contract on principle
The UAW’s shutdown of the strike before workers had voted on or even seen the full contract is standard operating procedure
including under the “reform” administration of union President Shawn Fain
The UAW bureaucracy’s anti-democratic move—overturning the old labor principle of “no contract
no work”—is aimed at softening the impact of the strike on the corporations and making passage of the contract appear like a foregone conclusion
the UAW apparatus forced Big Three autoworkers back to work last year before giving them the details of what turned out to be a massive sellout deal which has led to thousands of job cuts
Commenting on the UAW’s Facebook announcement of the tentative agreement at Lear
“Why is the new norm going back without signing?”
the UAW also announced a tentative agreement on Wednesday at the Forvia (formerly known as Faurecia) factory in Blue Springs
which supplies the Ford Kansas City Assembly complex
No details of that deal have yet been released
but workers there have grown increasingly frustrated after being kept on the job without a contract for nearly a month
the union has released limited and self-serving contract “highlights” to workers but has yet to announce when it will be holding ratification votes or distributing the full contract language
After stating that 60 contractual issues remain unresolved earlier in the week
on Thursday Local 282 President Bill Hugeback claimed the new deal contained “significant economic gains.” Describing the UAW’s intentions for the ratification process
“We’ll let them [Lear workers] read it for a couple days and meet on it and then vote.”
Workers should demand the immediate release of the full contract
and a week to carefully study and discuss its details
Any effort by the UAW bureaucracy to rush workers into accepting the agreement without all the facts should be adamantly rejected
Even based on the UAW’s limited “highlights”—which workers have shared with the WSWS Autoworker Newsletter—it is clear that the deal falls short of what workers had been striking to achieve
leaving little doubt that it is the latest in a long line of UAW sellout contracts
The contract summary has already provoked widespread opposition among Lear workers
workers have objected to the continuation of the punitive “points” attendance system
Others expect that the contract will do nothing to address routine six-day workweeks
dangerous conditions and frequent repetitive stress injuries
a worker shared with the WSWS a photo showing a hand-drawn sign stating
Making clear that the company is satisfied with the contract
a Lear spokesmen told the Detroit Free Press Thursday
“We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with the UAW at our Wentzville facility
We are focused on resuming normal operations.”
Opposition to the UAW deal has been fueled by the fact that the company’s penny-pinching with workers is financing tens of millions
which are being lavished on executives and large shareholders
On Thursday Lear announced record sales of $6 billion for the second quarter this year
The company substantially outperformed financial analysts’ earnings estimates
In a Thursday conference call with Wall Street firms
Chief Financial Officer Jason Cardew (2023 compensation: $6.5 million) boasted that Lear had given $104 million to investors over the previous three months
via $60 million in share repurchases and $44 million in dividends
Lear executives gave a number of clear signals to their financial backers that they intend to further boost profits and “share value” at the expense of workers’ jobs in the coming months
Cardew revealed that the company was proceeding with substantial job reductions
with plans to reduce “headcount” by 8 percent in its seating business and 6 percent in its electrical systems segment by the end of the year
Cardew said more than half the reductions had already been carried out but did not reveal where they were taking place
with approximately 88,000 of those either unionized or covered by labor contracts
according to the company’s 2023 annual report
The attacks at Lear are part of a wider assault on workers’ jobs throughout the auto industry internationally
The automakers have rapidly accelerated their cuts following the UAW’s imposition of the 2023 Big Three contracts
which have allowed the companies to carry out thousands of layoffs and mass firings of temps
CEO Ray Scott (whose 2023 compensation was $18.9 million) also reported that Lear had completed the purchase of WIP Industrial Automation
stating the acquisition “will allow us to really accelerate the labor cost reduction and manufacturing cost reduction over the next several years.”
The corporations have increasingly turned to automation and technological advances in artificial intelligence in recent years
seeking to weaponize them against a working class increasingly pressing for higher wages and better working conditions
Package carrier UPS has also carried out a jobs bloodbath this year through the expansion of automated shipping hubs
The WSWS Autoworker Newsletter urges the largest possible rejection of the UAW’s pro-company agreement
as well as the major automakers it supplies
has more than enough money to provide workers with far higher wages
along with vastly improved and safe working conditions
To ensure their fight is placed on the strongest possible footing, Lear workers should form rank-and-file committees
led by the most militant and class-conscious workers
Such committees would provide a means to unite around demands necessary to meet workers’ needs—such as a 50 percent wage increase—and to coordinate a struggle across different plants and companies
If they defy the UAW bureaucracy’s efforts to push through a sellout
Lear Wentzville workers will find they have powerful allies among workers at GM
Indiana—where workers have repeatedly rebelled against UAW sellout contracts in recent years—told the WSWS

Supporters on both sides of a measure before the Francis Howell School Board gathered on Thursday
during a board meeting at the district headquarters in St
CHARLES COUNTY — School board elections aren’t until April
but efforts to wrest control of some of the state’s most embattled boards have already kicked off
School board candidate filing ended at 5 p.m
bringing about the official start of contentious races for the Francis Howell and Wentzville boards
the seven-member board could add two outspoken conservatives who seek two open seats on the board
Candidates Danielle Looney and Christina Macormic
both founding members of the conservative St
seek to fill a seat left by outgoing Board President Katie Lyczak and Julie Scott
health care and more in public schools to “combat ideological subversion.”
But Looney and Macormic had cut ties with SCCPA by then
resigning from the group’s board of directors in April 2023 after the nonprofit accused the two of working against it
Looney and Macormic could not be reached for comment
IRS filings show the agency revoked SCCPA’s federal tax exempt status on May 15 for either failing to file 990 tax forms or notices that receipts were under a certain threshold for three consecutive years
Wentzville has seen its fair share of culture war issues over the last few years, but tensions have, for the most part, died down in recent months. Former Superintendent Danielle Tormala left in April with a more than $1 million buyout after a two-year tenure marred by debates of race and gender in curriculum and accusations of hostile behavior
And a lawsuit filed against the district by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey over alleged Sunshine Law violations in September 2023 is still making its way through court
Other Wentzville candidates include Jeremy Way
a former parent of two in the district and assistant superintendent of human resources
facilities and transportation for the Wright City R-III School District
Both Way and current board member Scott have received endorsements from the St
Charles County Families for Public Schools
whose candidates won in a clean sweep last April
“I feel like our district needs a reset with all the drama and everything that’s happened with the superintendent and the school board the last few years,” Wentzville parent Amanda Knittel said on Tuesday
“I think our district really just needs to see a board that’s focused on getting work done that’s not a culture war.”
The Francis Howell School Board will also see some leadership change come spring
Board President Adam Bertrand did not file to run for a second term
saying he accomplished his goals on the board and wanted to focus the time he has left on finding a replacement for the district’s departing superintendent
“This decision also allows me to focus all my dedicated time working for the board and district towards our superintendent search,” he said in text message
were the first board members elected with the backing of the conservative Francis Howell Families PAC
The PAC seeks to keep Francis Howell’s five-member conservative majority
It’s endorsing Cook and marketing executive Ashley Sturm
“Both bring a passion for education and a commitment to transparency, accountability, and results,” the group wrote in its announcement
“They understand that keeping FHSD exceptional means focusing on the basics: smart spending
Two other candidates — Amy Gryder and Sarah Oelke — have the backing of the Francis Howell Forward PAC
Gryder is an alumna of the district and works in product management; Oelke teaches English in the Parkway School District
Charles County Families for Public Schools won elections last year
said supporters want to “take back our schools.”
“Our objective is to get back to having school boards that want to do what’s best for the kids
and who support teachers and who support the idea of public education,” House said

General Motors stopped production Monday at its Wentzville Assembly Plant in Missouri after union-represented workers at a nearby seat supplier went on strike late Sunday
GM builds its midsize pickups and cargo vans at Wentzville Assembly, where it employs about 4,600 people, according to its website. It is one of GM's key plants and was one of the first plants the UAW struck last fall during its targeted so-called Stand Up strike
GM spokesman told the Free Press that the automaker had sent third-shift workers home early due to a parts shortage and the company was continuing to monitor the situation
spokesman Kevin Kelly said the automaker had idled the plant
"We can confirm that GM Wentzville Assembly Plant was impacted by part shortages resulting from a labor dispute at one of our suppliers
We hope both sides work quickly to resolve their issues so we can resume our regular production schedule to support our customers," Kelly said in a statement
The supplier is a Lear plant in Wentzville
where about 500 union-represented workers assemble the seats used for the GM vehicles
Kelly said no other GM plants are impacted by the strike
A spokesman for Lear sent the following statement to the Free Press
the union informed us late last night of their decision to strike
Lear Corporation stands firm in supporting our employees and the communities in which we operate
The Lear spokesman did not provide further details
The UAW provided a statement to the Free Press from Region 4 Director Brandon Campbell blaming Lear for the Wentzville shutdown
"Shame on Lear for failing to come to a fair agreement with the 500 members of UAW Local 282 who are now forced to strike for their fair share," Campbell said
"The company has had plenty of time to make things right
but instead spent a billion dollars on stock buybacks and dividends last year
Now Wentzville Assembly is down thanks to Lear's refusal to bargain a fair deal."
