As Corvallis High head baseball coach Eric Dazey puts it With only a few more weeks in the regular season and the postseason just around the corner teams like Corvallis and West Albany are staking their claim as competitors in 5A who made the state title game the last two seasons They lost a lot of seniors from last year’s squad and according to head coach Marty Johnston it took some time for the new guys to step in West Albany players celebrates a home run by Blake Linton The Bulldogs started Mid-Willamette Conference play 9-1 entering Monday's game “Coming into the season we knew we had a lot of potential but it took us a few games for guys to get comfortable in their roles comfortable with the situation,” Johnston said “And starting the season we played some pretty tough teams so it took a while to get comfortable.” but injuries have made it difficult there too Star pitcher Drew Rice has been banged up for much of the season Rylan Mathiesen and Jaden Fifhause have made much of the starts for West Albany (10-7 heading into Mnnday) and are a big reason why it has won eight games in a row “Two guys who threw a little bit for us last year but were not significant contributors,” Johnston said “They’re two more of the guys who had to step into that role.” Rice has been able to play shortstop and he’s been one of the team’s best hitters Blake Linton was another one of the key returners on offense but he got off to a slow start after coming off shoulder surgery following last season even hitting his first home run of the season Friday against Woodburn “I’ve had a few that were close but that felt good for sure.” Kane Damon and other returners for having trust in the new guys “They did a great job with their leadership doing their part and having trust that those guys would come along too,” Johnston said where the Bulldogs scored double digits in eight of the games they’ve played much of the bottom of the standings which is also 9-1 in league play (entering Monday) They’re not worried about needing to flip a switch when the games get tighter Act like we’re playing a team that’s better than what they are,” Linton said are the team the Bulldogs and everyone else is trying to catch in the Mid-Willamette Corvallis (15-4 entering Monday) won the first 10 games of league play including outscoring rival Crescent Valley 24-9 over the two games Wednesday and Friday “I think (confidence) is really high,” pitcher/infielder Roy Bannister said It’s a long way from when the Spartans lost to Hood River Valley 9-0 on April 9 That loss now seems it may have benefitted the team “That Hood River (Valley) game served us,” Dazey said “They took to heart some things we learned about ourselves from that game.” The pitching was a big question entering the season and still a big question after nonlegaue play But they have answered some of those questions thus far in MWC play Andrew Street and Axel Prechel have all succeeded on the mound “I think they’re coming into their own,” Dazey said It’s really giving us a chance against good hitters.” Roy Bannister pitched 6⅓ innings in the game between Corvallis and Crescent Valley last Wednesday The Spartans have found different ways to win games with high-scoring efforts against the Raiders and shutout wins against Silverton “They’re playing to a standard and they’re playing for each other," Dazey said The combination of those two things keeps them showing up every day ready to roll.” Bannister said that the team has “manifested big things,” but there’s an importance now of not looking too far ahead “That’s part of why our coaches are good coaches,” Bannister said “They always make sure that the only game we have on our mind is the next one Just solely focus on that and worry about the rest later.” Dazey said that wasn’t the performance of a team they wanted to be “I hope that we’re still a long way from the team we’d like to be,” Dazey said Dylan Jacobs covers Oregon State men's was granted so that a firehouse could be built in a single-family residential neighborhood along Albany Avenue This photograph was taken of the new firehouse in the 1950s a new street was developed from the firehouse on Albany Avenue around the northeast corner of Bishop’s Corner to North Main Street The Town Plan and Zoning Commission named it Starkel Road in honor of Henry A the West Hartford Police Department maintenance and equipment chief The town owned the property on the west side of the road which would become the Bishop’s Corner Library branch in the 1960s The firehouse on Albany Avenue was long overdue but it reflected the growing northern section of West Hartford the entire town was covered by the work of the Fountain Hose Company and other volunteers (there is more than one story in our history of a group of broom-wielding neighbors showing up to a barn or house fire It was not uncommon for single wooden houses to burn down in the 1800s but as suburban streets were laid out and houses were densely constructed the chance of massive outbreaks that could sweep through a street surged almost all of Raymond Road burned down while residents vacationed out of town the first movement for a dedicated fire district sprang up on the East Side where wealthy businessmen had built large estates on Prospect Avenue Boundaries were laid out and the first district firehouse was built on Prospect Avenue in 1915 (it still stands there) followed by the Quaker Hose Company off Park Road After the Center Fire District took a vote to cut off all of Elmwood and Charter Oak the South Fire District was established in 1919 during this bureaucratic wave of activity That left the western and northern parts of West Hartford – but for a few more decades These stretches of land were covered by the Fountain Hose Company generally and little by little parts of North Quaker Lane and Fern Street by Main Street were annexed by the Center Fire District with an increase in the mill rate the north end of town met in the North School to petition for annexation to the fire district a vote was taken and the fire district approved annexation of the entire northern section to the Bloomfield line All of this extra work prompted the construction of a brand new firehouse on Brace Road in the Center complete with a second floor assembly room The district covered fire as well as garbage and ash collection by the late 1920s The first half of the 1900s was very confusing for residents when it came to understanding the fire districts – in 1927 Captain Thomas Donnelly of the Center Fire District had to make a public statement urging residents to sit down and actually learn about the boundaries of each fire district as too many people were calling the number of a district without authority on their street the districts were merged under the umbrella of the West Hartford Fire Department The growth of the Albany Avenue area required a new firehouse by the early 1950s Roads that spanned the length of Trout Brook Drive needed to be covered as well The construction of the huge shopping plaza at Bishop’s Corner in 1954 complemented all of this building activity so it made sense to have a firehouse close by The land that the firehouse was built on had been known as the Mansfield farm William Henry Mansfield had purchased this fruit farm named “Mansfield’s Hill,” with his brother Peter William served on the town school committee in the 1890s and was politically involved in the Republican Party serving on the board of selectman through 1900 He and his brother enjoyed hunting and fishing trips to a lake in Maine and his death in 1907 after a brief bout of pneumonia prompted his brother to sell the eastern half of the farm to a real estate company the western half of the parcel was sold and their farmhouse converted into a day and boarding school under the ownership of John G Hawley was an office manager of the Capewell Horseshoe Nail Company in Hartford before his retirement in 1921 he worked as a real estate agent and it was through this ownership that the Town of West Hartford acquired the land a ladder company was moved from the Brace Road firehouse to the new firehouse on Albany Avenue a decision made to beef up fire protection in the northern section of the town where there were now larger buildings – houses The acting Town Manager Arthur Rutherford (former building inspector) argued: “Like the Police Department changes are necessary to meet the heavy increase in population.” notably the shifting of fire resources during the 1950s were overseen by the West Hartford Fire Chief Donnelly started his career with the department in 1920 as one of six firemen in the old Center Fire District (He was also the one telling residents to learn about the fire districts because they kept calling the wrong one!) When the fire districts were consolidated in the spring of 1937 Donnelly was appointed chief of the entire force and oversaw innovations like water spray under high pressure (“fog”) serving at his hometown submarine base in New London Donnelly worked intensely over decades to ensure a smooth organization of our fire department just after the ladder company was moved to Albany Avenue the Albany Avenue fire station is the second newest (after the one on Berkshire Road built in the 1960s) and covers an area that grew much larger after its construction in the mid-1950s Jeff Murray was born and raised in West Hartford and has been involved with the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society since 2011 when he was a high school student and won the Meyer Prize for his essay on local history Jeff routinely volunteers as local history researcher uncovering information for numerous museum programs such as the West Hartford House Tour and West Hartford Hauntings Jeff works as a data analyst at Pratt & Whitney Like what you see here? Click here to subscribe to We-Ha’s newsletter so you’ll always be in the know about what’s happening in West Hartford Click the blue button below to become a supporter of We-Ha.com and our efforts to continue producing quality journalism and website in this browser for the next time I comment Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" © 2025 • WeHa News • All Rights Reserved • Ezoic Privacy Policy - Created by Roy Web Design ALBANY — After battling through a stacked preseason schedule the Woodburn boys basketball team has hit its stride over the past three weeks the Bulldogs entered the week atop the Mid-Willamette Conference standings riding a six-game win streak and sitting at No it proved the case once again that there are no easy nights in what might be the deepest league in the state 6 West Albany ambushed Woodburn with a first-half 3-point barrage and cruised to a 68-56 home win "This is a great league — it's been a great league since we got here," Woodburn head coach Raul Veliz said There are sleeper teams who aren't really sleepers anymore; Crescent Valley is tough Silverton is good and we've got them next Friday "There are a lot of great teams with opportunities We've talked about it with our guys; we've got to play our best every single night to have a chance Sophomore Grey Nieman scored 16 points and knocked down four threes for West Albany Jonah Lasselle also had 16 and Gavin Aguilar tallied 14 Cruz Veliz led Woodburn with 15 points and Esai Carrasquillo scored 12 Woodburn knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter and West Albany buried five to take a 23-16 lead into the second as West uncorked a 22-0 run that spanned nearly eight minutes and culminated in a 39-16 lead near the end of the first half "(West Albany) hit their shots at a pretty high clip in the first half," Raul Veliz said there were some breakdowns; we kind of got caught inside a little bit when we should have been a step or two out contesting some of those shots a little bit more." Woodburn scratched and clawed to climb back into contention It buckled down and limited West Albany to just nine points in the third quarter Carrasquillo stole an inbounds pass and hit a quick layup to cut the lead to 62-54 But that was as close as Woodburn would get "We came out in the second half and showed some fight," Raul Veliz said "It would have been more concerning if we had guys coming out That's who we are; we're gonna keep fighting as best we can It just didn't go our way this time with the shots." Woodburn sets sights on another deep postseason runOn the heels of last year's trip to the 5A semifinals Woodburn entered this season with high expectations but faced a grueling month of December the Bulldogs matched up with Class 6A schools Sherwood which received votes in the latest 5A coaches poll "This team had to go through it," Raul Veliz said it's been the toughest nonleague schedule we've ever played We had some really tough nonleague games: Sherwood Gresham — Churchill is one of the top 5A schools It was hard because we're losing more games than we're used to in the last few years "They needed to find themselves and figure out who we were really going to be as a team." the Bulldogs discovered their defensive identity and have proven to be a disruptive group on that end of the floor during league play earned 5A first-team all-state honors as a junior last season and received second-team recognition as a sophomore He's been one of the most productive players in the state once again this winter despite the fact that opponents have gone to great lengths to limit his shooting opportunities Several teams have face-guarded Cruz for entire games while one opponent even deployed a box-and-one with hopes of scheming him out of the game entirely Raul said he has been pleased with Cruz's ability to move the ball and keep Woodburn's offense flowing even when it might be tempting to force contested shots "The one thing with Cruz is he's an unselfish basketball player; he will make the pass," Raul said "When he's facing all the face-guarding and box-and-one stuff He's still a high school kid who wants to go out and make plays in the game Jarrid Denney covers high school sports and Oregon State for the Statesman Journal. The second half devolved into a battle for field position Dallas' defense kept the Dragons in the game by forcing two consecutive turnovers on downs The first stop was a product of a big pass breakup by senior linebacker Justin Hofenbredl on 4th-and-15 and we just go do what we need to do," Dallas senior defensive lineman Garrett Bassham said and (the defense) is something we're able to count on I think it's because of this group of guys; we just have each other's backs." Despite the big swing early in the second half Dallas was unable to cash in on the momentum West Albany kicker Jonah Lasselle drilled a short field goal with 9:30 to go to make it 16-7 Hess' pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted The Bulldogs soon after pushed their lead to 23-7 when Hart-McNally broke off a 37-yard touchdown run with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter Dallas responded immediately as Hess linked up with Landon Holbrook for a 63-yard touchdown pass on the third playing of the Dragons' next drive But they failed to convert the ensuing two-point attempt and West Albany was able to run out the clock and close out the game Jackson was effusive in his praise of the Dragons' senior class Dallas' 2024 roster featured 16 seniors — many of whom were instrumental in helping the Dragons evolve into a perennial playoff contender we've been in the postseason," Jackson said "We've been a winning team all four years that they've been here They've raised the standard — not just of what being a good team is I'm hoping our young guys will take a lesson from that Because they are as authentic as they come; they're good selfless people who care about each other." Midway through their Wednesday quarterfinal matchup with No they found themselves in a significant hole as one of the top scorers in the state rained an endless barrage of buckets on their typically stout defense as its players dug in and captured a gutsy win to keep its title hopes alive at Linfield University to secure a trip to Friday's 5A semifinals After trailing by eight midway through the third quarter Silverton delivered a well-rounded team performance down the stretch to take control of the game "We've been in this position before this year," Silverton coach Alyssa Ogle said There was a timeout (in the third quarter) and we talked about it; we're not going to go after the next 16 minutes We're just going to go after the next four We're gonna play in four-minute incraments and do everything we can to get stops "Every team is going to go on runs — especially when you play a great team like West Albany We just talked about doing what we could to stop it then we have to match it and create a bigger run of our own." five assists and four steals in 28 minutes we've played West Albany twice — we've been there before," Craig said "We've been down before and we always come back Allie Mansur scored 12 points and dished out five assists She also was tasked with guarding West Albany star sophomore Payton Starwalt on-ball for the entire game scored a game-high 30 points on 9-of-19 shooting contested looks in the first half to give the Bulldogs a significant early advantage Starwalt got 20 of her points in the first half and helped West Albany stretch its lead out to 25-17 early in the second quarter Mansur and Silverton's defense found ways to slow her down Meanwhile the Foxes' offense roared to life as they picked apart West Albany's vaunted 1-3-1 zone defense "She's a good player; she's a tough guard," Mansur said of Starwalt She's a good player and I commend her for that but I'm always going to come out with my best I couldn't do it without the help of my team." As Silverton slowly but surely chipped away at West Albany's lead Mansur gave the Foxes the spark they needed she buried a 3-pointer to give her team a 38-37 advantage It was Silverton's first lead since the 1:36 mark of the first quarter "Every game I go in and whatever I can do for the team offense or being the biggest cheerleader," Mansur said "There are games where I don't get many points But West Albany went down swinging and put the Foxes in plenty of difficult scenarios during the fourth quarter Cate Kurth hit a three for the Bulldogs to cut the lead to 47-44 with 6:38 to go Silverton answered back with a free throw from Mansur then a tough layup from Brooklynn Pfeifer next time down the floor to push the lead back to six Mansur nabbed a steal and quickly dished the ball to Craig who found Hayashida for a transition layup to make it 54-47 "It was definitely a team win," Craig said But this was one of the best we've had all year in terms of everybody contributing." Martirano consistently tested the Foxes' young defensive backs with a barrage of deep 50/50 balls that required disciplined coverage "I think we did about as good as you can with the receivers they have and the quarterback they have," Lever said Especially when you look at the fact that we've got some young dudes running around back there Luke Horner and Kellen Kuenzi both played great." in the 5A tournament and now head to Linfield looking to keep it going 6 Crescent Valley (20-5) each moved on to the quarterfinals of the OSAA 5A state tournament by handling their business in the opening round 2 Thurston having to come from behind to squeak out wins to avoid upsets Both Crescent Valley and West Albany are seeking their first boys basketball state titles with the Bulldogs the only team of the two to get to a final The Raiders moved on to this year’s quarterfinals with a 54-38 victory over No 11 North Eugene on Saturday behind a double-double from Truman Brasfield Crescent Valley finished third at state in 2023 but is coming off a year where it went 6-18 and missed the playoffs With the inclusion of Corvallis High transfers Brasfield “This entire season I’ve preached ‘play together You see these kids really believe in each other play for one another instead of play for themselves.” This is a new experience for the CHS transfers the three of them on the Spartans went 9-15 and missed the postseason “Personally I’ve never even been to the playoffs in my high school career,” Bluhm said enjoying every moment and leaving it all on the court Crescent Valley's Jackson Bluhm is one of three Corvallis High transfers getting their first taste of postseason basketball The Raiders seem to be ready for the moment as they are peaking at the right time They have won seven of their last eight games and that one loss added even more motivation That was one we really wanted to get,” Bluhm said “That just made us even more fiery and even more eager to go out and have good practices and play harder.” Now the team heads to Linfield for a matchup it probably wasn’t expecting The Cougars jumped out to a big lead early and lead 45-14 at the half Canby was only 6-4 over its last 10 regular-season games and the Raiders feel they are peaking at the right time “Every coach’s goal is to get the kids playing their best basketball at the end of the season,” Hastings “I truly feel that we’re playing our best basketball anyone can do anything in the state tournament.” Thursday with the winner facing the winner of No West Albany also had a somewhat comfortable win in the opening round Gavin Aguilar was the catalyst in this one Those types of performances aren’t surprising to his coach At this point you don’t get shocked anymore,” coach Drew Halvorson said had 41 points on Saturday to propel the Bulldogs to the 5A boys basketball quarterfinals There was a stretch of the season where the Bulldogs were without Owen Hopkins Aguilar had to take on more responsibility “I’ve been that guy all season,” Aguilar said The Bulldogs have technically won eight of nine games but the one loss was a forfeit after they had defeated Woodburn feels it is also peaking at the right team as they are healthy for the first time in a while The Wildcats made the final last year before losing in a heartbreaker to Summit including a transfer guard Cole Hammock and freshman forward Michael Radcliffe Jr There’s plenty of motivation carrying over from last year on both sides as the Bulldogs lost a close game to Woodburn in the quarterfinals a season ago but they’re also really good at practicing the next best action,” Halvorson said “We had something that didn’t go our way and we’re ready to channel that energy into a big run at Linfield.” It's getting to be crunch time in the Mid-Willamette Conference for the teams at the top of the standings It was a busy day for Dance/Drill on Saturday and Centennial (Metro) hosting dozens of teams in their gyms These events were the final opportunities for teams to share their work before the OSAA championships in less than two weeks.   a few more teams have qualified two routines to the championships and the category divisions will soon be set. We will learn later in the week if certain category classifications will combine into larger groups and 6A participating schools. In most cases categories within 1A-4A and 5A often combine since there is a five team minimum to remain independent in a category. Fingers crossed there is some equitable independence between classifications this season over 40 teams shared more than 80 performances on three different stages. The Centennial event was the highest scoring venue for some remarkable teams.   Centennial played host to teams from Barlow Sherwood continued a stellar season with three incredible wins Sherwood’s 91.50 was the highest score of the weekend outscoring another remarkable routine by Lake Oswego Sherwood’s Traditional (6A) also entered the “Superior” realm with another 90 in that category. Their third win was in Hip Hop (6A) with a score of 89.94. The question remains which two routines will we see from Sherwood on the Salem Pavilion floor?  Silverton’s Jazz (4A-5A) was knocked down a couple notches by Pendleton and Parkrose but the scores are so close that it is still anyone’s victory at the state championships. Parkrose also did well in Hip Hop (4A-5A) and Pom (5A) receiving first place in those lineups.  Silverton maintained their first place run with their Traditional (4A-5A) at Metro.  Rounding out the winner’s circle at the Metro event was Lake Oswego’s Jazz (6A) against a long list of competitors. The Traditional (6A) and Jazz (6A) categories are shaping up to be quite the list of teams for Dance/Drill’s final hurrah.   Moving over to the west side of the Portland Metro area Forest Grove’s spacious gym was a perfect venue for attending teams that included Aloha Most of the Show category teams made their appearance at Forest Grove with Sprague maintaining their lead against Canby With less than a two point spread between the top three teams and six Show teams competing at the State Championships it seems that a roll of the dice could predict the winner in a couple weeks.  Valley Catholic continued to dazzle with their first place finishes in Jazz (1A-6A) and Traditional (1A-5A). Clackamas also continued their success in Traditional (6A) receiving the highest score at this venue with an 86.11 Rounding out the wins at Forest Grove were Astoria’s Hip Hop (1A-5A) and Mountainside’s Pom (6A). Scappoose was the only 1A-5A Pom entry with an enthusiastic performance.  Willamette took the floor with Philomath as hosts.  Although Forest Grove and Philomath were lower scoring events overall Philomath had some noteworthy successes for teams.   qualifying their second routine to the state championships. Although final numbers need to be organized and arranged an independent Traditional category for each classification looks promising at the championship event.    Lebanon had a successful day at Philomath with two wins. Pom (5A-6A) and Jazz (1A-6A) went to them.   taking the Hip Hop (5A) and Traditional (1A-6A) categories. West Albany also received the highest score of the Philomath event in Traditional against six teams.   Rounding out the wins at the Philomath event were Newport’s Hip Hop (1A-4A) COMPETITION RESULTS AVAILABLE HERE Metro Competition -- First Place Finishes All Results Forest Grove - First Place Finishes Philomath Competition - First Place Finishes each event had a drill down competition for Novice and Advanced participants teams are allowed to send eight dancers to the floor for a drill down competition and 6A teams are separated into their own groups for an advanced drill down finals Many of the names and faces that have been seen among the finalists at all the competitions this season will also be seen on the state floor hoping to be crowned the best of the best for drill down this year teams planning to attend the OSAA Dance/Drill State Championships were required to register their final choices for the categories they want to enter qualification verification pending. In the next several days we will learn how the cookie crumbles as far as the categories that remain independent for 1A-4A Teams with three routines hold most of the cards for where categories will fill up as they make their two final choices.    with scores and outcomes from one weekend to the next fluctuating quite a bit sometimes with individual teams having a 5-10 point swing. With events hosting different teams and different combinations of judges for each category any method of prediction for the final outcomes is truly an impossible task. The Dance/Drill State Championships is bound to be one of the most stomach churning and unpredictable competitions we’ve seen for many years The OSAA Dance/Drill State Championships will be held at the Salem Pavilion on March 21 and 22 the Silverton girls basketball players and coaching staff gather around a table and discuss what they want the team's identity to be for the next four months After winning the Class 5A state title a year ago many of the Foxes' top players returned for the 2024-25 season with reasonable hopes of making another deep postseason run But they made it clear early on that they didn't want to simply be judged on their past accomplishments That's the first thing we're establishing here — it's a new us It doesn't take away from our state championship team last year but this is a new year,'" Silverton coach Alyssa Ogle said or whatever they want to call it; we just know that we are super thankful and blessed for what we accomplished last year But we also know that we're going to get everybody's best game We just want to come out and compete and set a new tone We're focused on one game at a time and focused on the new us." 16-2 Allie Mansur are among the returners from the state championships squad who have upped their respective games this winter Additionally, all-state guard Hadley Craig, who spent last season at Central, has stepped into a lead role on both ends of the floor "She's just such an awesome kid and has kind of melded into the program while also giving her skills to this team as well," Ogle said of Craig "She's a special talent; one of the most talented players at the 5A level in the state Just watching her kind of settle in and her confidence build Ever since she came to us and started playing with us last summer The way that (Hayashida) trusts her and (Mansur) trusts her and she trusts them It's just been fun to watch those relationships grow." the Foxes will be tasked with slowing down West Albany star sophomore Payton Starwalt a sharpshooting guard who has received multiple Division I offers Starwalt averaged 22 points and six assists during her 10th-grade campaign Silverton and West Albany met twice during league play this season "Payton is a great shooter; she gets her shot off pretty quick," Ogle said "We are very versatile defensively and pride ourselves on defense It doesn't matter which team we're playing or which kid we're guarding; we celebrate that we've given up the fewest points of any 5A school in the state We've got the quickness and peskiness of a guard with (Mansur) we've got length and quickness with (Hayashida) and (Wertz) You look at the strength aspect and we have (Craig) and (Pfeifer) we like our ability to match up and defend." weekend for the Linn and Benton county teams with West Albany High standing above the rest and moving on to the 5A semifinals Philomath and Santiam Christian all had their seasons end on Friday or Saturday but not before putting up strong efforts on the way out Here’s a look at what went down during the quarterfinals: The scoreline would tell you that this one was a pretty tightly contested game but in reality the Bulldogs really controlled this one from beginning to end West Albany jumped out to a 7-0 lead thanks to 3-yard rushing touchdown from tight end Austin Simmons and then running back Tyler Hart-McNally took over with a 67-yard rushing touchdown to make it 13-0 after only a quarter “We’re explosive,” quarterback Kaden Martirano said we’re going to come back and punch you in the mouth but the Bulldogs defense made sure that the lead was secure A Dallas offense that was dominant for much of the regular season couldn’t really get anything going for much of the game The first points for the Dragons came right after a muffed punt on a very well-executed flea flicker “(Defensive coordinator Cole) Pouliot did a really good job with the game plan this week,” coach Brian Mehl said “It came down to our front seven playing the game that we need to play against the type of offense that Dallas runs.” After that trick-play score by the Dragons Mehl put his faith in kicker Jonah Lasselle to hit a 25-yarder to make it a two possession game “I’ve seen Jonah kick enough to have full confidence in that situation,” Mehl said “We wanted to go for it but we knew a field goal would take it to two-possession Jonah Lasselle hits a 25-yard field goal during West Albany's quarterfinal win over Dallas on Friday but the real dagger came off another long Hart-McNally touchdown run The senior finished with 242 yards for the game “I’m out here for everybody that’s next to me,” Hart-McNally said It’s awesome to help get this win tonight.” but it wasn’t nearly enough to steal it as West Albany held on for the win The Bulldogs now move on to the semifinals where they will face No is ready for his first opportunity to play in the final four “But we know that this is just a little bit of a good feeling The Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead after quarterback Brison Edwards hit tight end Zech Halsey for a 31-yard score with neither team being able to sustain a successful offense drive Mountain View cashed in for two quick scores to go up 14-6 and then it was tough sledding for the Warriors Two touchdowns early in the second half made it 28-6 Lebanon got one back on an Edwards 4-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 28-14 But it wasn’t enough as the Cougars added two more touchdowns before the game was done The 10th-seeded Warriors finish their season 7-4 Philomath was in a tight battle against the defending state champions but Henley was able to pull it out in the dying seconds and move on The Hornets scored with 13 seconds to go for the 21-14 win Philomath jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the road in the second quarter with a 23-yard score from quarterback Caleb Russell to wide receiver CD Nuno Henley scored twice before the end of the first half to take a 14-7 lead into the break But a 4-yard rushing touchdown from wide receiver Rocco De La Rosa tied it up with just over seven minutes remaining But Henley got the ball back on an interception drove down the field and punched it in to move on to the semifinals Running back Jeremy Ness carries the ball during Santiam Christian's quarterfinal loss to Burns on Saturday but it hasn’t played like one in these playoffs and that was on display when it knocked off No the Eagles couldn’t get anything going on offense The potent run game led by running back Jeremy Ness was shut down by the Burns defense throughout the whole game The Hilanders held a 12-0 lead in the second quarter before Santiam Christian put together its best drive of the game But the Burns defense held up and forced the Eagles into a field goal and Santiam Christian faced a 12-3 deficit at the half Burns got right back to business in the second half “I felt like I was back to my freshman year,” Hart-McNally said “I felt like I was just out here playing football as determined by a vote of the league’s coaches  René Ferrán of High School on SI recently made a list of the top 50 girls athletes
