ExpandJoliet West’s Carson Weber reacts after defeating Lockport’s Justin Wardlow in the Class 3A 150-pound final at the IHSA boys state wrestling championships at the State Farm Center in Champaign on Saturday
(John Starks/jstarks@dailyherald./John Starks/jstarks@dailyherald.)
CHAMPAIGN — Charles Walker of Joliet Central fell behind his opponent in the quarterfinals and was dangerously close to not being in the Class 3A 215-pound state championship match
Walker kept battling and eventually turned the tide on previously unbeaten Kai Calcutt of Loyola Academy and picked up a 7-5 win to become the Steelmen’s first state champion since Joe Herron in 1998
when the Central and West programs were combined as Joliet Township
Walker fell behind Caleb Baczek of Libertyville 10-1 in the quarterfinals
and ended up beating Baczek by fall in 3:45
After winning his semifinal match against Taft’s Evan Jocic
he was set to face undefeated Kai Calcutt of Loyola Academy
Walker found himself trailing as Calcutt led 4-0 after two periods
Walker started in the down position in the third and escaped to make it 4-1
He then scored on a takedown to tie it at 4
Walker lifted his big opponent clear off the ground
turned and slammed him to the mat to record three more points for the takedown
He managed to ride Calcutt out the rest of the way and win the title
setting the stage for an even bigger takedown
Walker raced to coach Patrick McGovern in his corner
Walker gave McGovern a Rock-Bottom to the surprise and delight of the crowd before doing a back flip in celebration
“We’ve talked about that since sophomore year,” Walker said about slamming his coach
I just did what our coaches keep telling us
never give up and it’s not over until the final buzzer
People should never count themselves out.”
Walker wasn’t the only District 204 state champion
nor was he the only District 204 state champion with the initials C.W
That’s because Joliet West’s Carson Weber earned some revenge on Lockport’s Justin Wardlow in the Class 3A 150-pound title match
Wardlow had beaten Weber for the championship in both the regional and sectional tournaments
was able to get an escape in the second period after starting in the down position
then hold on for a 1-0 win and the Tigers' first champion since Todd Sterr in 1981
“I kind of figured that it would be Justin and me in the championship,” Weber said
“I think we were the two best in the state
I learned from wrestling him the last two weeks that I had to stay disciplined
but once you shake hands and the buzzer sounds
the last 30 seconds or so with me only having a 1-0 lead
I just wanted to make sure I didn’t do anything to give the match away
beat Mascoutah’s Brock Ross with a 20-5 technical fall at 150
“It feels great to win a title,” Judah Heeg said
I knew I had to unload and give everything I had
we lived in Minnesota and I made it to state
I give most of the credit to my coaches and teammates.”
Justus Heeg won a state high school championship as an eighth-grader last year in Minnesota
where eighth-graders are allowed to compete in high school competitions
It gives him the rare opportunity to be a five-time state champion and he got off to a strong start this season
“Five times is definitely a possibility,” Justus Heeg said
“It was fun watching my brother win before I went out there
He gave me the incentive to go out and win as well
“The title match was pretty much how I like to wrestle most of the time
Besides Wardlow, second-place finishes came from Nico Ronchetti of Joliet Catholic Academy (3A, 190), Cooper Morris of Coal City (1A, 126) and Brody Widlowski of Coal City (1A, 138).

A 30-year-old effort to turn a former industrial site in unincorporated West Carson into public green space has been completed
At a May 16 ceremony, officials with Los Angeles County dedicated Wishing Tree Park
which spans 8.5 acres at 20400 Budlong Avenue
"We are proud to officially open Wishing Tree Park
This moment is the culmination of over 30 years of advocacy by community members and dedication from our LA County Parks Department to bring much-needed green space to the unincorporated West Carson area," said Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J
"I cannot wait to see our residents enjoying this 8.5-acre contemporary park that will impact generations to come."
According to the Daily Breeze
the park site was formerly developed with a synthetic rubber production facility that has been linked to health problems experienced by residents in the surrounding area
after which point contaminated soil was removed
the park now provides amenities to those neighbors
It also includes a memorial plaza honoring community members who worked to transform the property into green space
The name of the park also references the work of community members
"In anticipation of a future park, ficus trees were planted over a decade ago and lined the alleyway in 24[-inch] wooden boxes as a sign of what could be," reads a project description released by the L.A. Neighborhood Land Trust
"Over the years these trees would outgrow their boxes and plant their roots deep into the soil growing twenty times their intended size
One tree stood out to the girls and they started to write wishes on pieces of paper
placing them in the tree so that they would come true
They called it their 'Wishing Tree.' One of their wishes was having a beautiful park in their neighborhood where they could play."

ARVADA — Arvada West junior Adrian Symalla put the icing on the cake in the Wildcats’ football opener Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex
“I knew I was going to have that cutback lane
that is what we planned for,” Symalla said of his long touchdown run
Symalla also had a 50-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play in the second half for A-West
“I’ve seen this group grow,” A-West coach Brad Pyatt said
At the end of last season we were making great strides
There was a big culture switch with this group
A-West is coming off a 5-6 record last season where league rivals Columbine
Chatfield and Ralston Valley all advanced to the 5A state semifinals
The Wildcats hit the road next week to face Mountain Range on Friday
“We are just getting started,” Symalla said
Symalla and fellow junior running back Jaiden Green combined for more than 2,000 yards on the ground last year as sophomores
Green also had a huge game against the Trojans with a trio of touchdown runs of 4
A-West returning starting quarterback — junior Logan Duhachek — also threw a pair of touchdowns to junior Noah Meurer as the Wildcats put up seven touchdowns against Fountain-Fort Carson
“Logan (Duhachek) is playing way better than he ever has,” Symalla said
“The line is blocking and then the running backs can do their jobs.”
losing to eventual state champion Columbine in the second round of the 5A state tournament
96-yard touchdown drive capped off by Green’s second touchdown of the first half
“Our offense has grown so much from last year,” A-West senior captain and defensive lineman Vince Vigil said
“Going into this game I knew we had a really good group
We are ready for next week and ready for things to come.”
The Wildcats’ defense also returns a lot of talent in Vigil
junior linebacker Jaxon Pyatt and Kevin Sanchez leading the way
Senior defensive linemen Daniel D’Amico and Christian Knightwalker both harassed Camba all night long
A-West forced three turnovers and gave up just one offensive touchdown that the Trojans scored off a Wildcat turnover that gave FFC the ball on A-West’s 10-yard line
The only other score for FFC was a 97-yard kickoff return by junior Justyn Jordan during the running clock in the fourth quarter
“That is going to be our identity this year,” Vigil said of the Wildcats’ physical nature on defense
“We are boogiemen and that is what we are going to do.”

Byrd said he and that man began shoving one another
and he maintained he pulled his own handgun only after hearing gunfire from another weapon
Byrd reportedly said he began firing "because he was in fear," but he "could not tell me who he was shooting," a detective wrote
"Camran stated that he just blacked out and did (not) know what happened," the report concluded
Court records reflect no prior convictions for the Muncie man
Beck is on pace to surpass last year's numbers in 2024
he is completing 67.9 percent of his passes for 1,818 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions for the No
He is projected to solve a volatile quarterback problem for an AFC West franchise.
Beck (6-foot-4, 220 pounds) is projected to land with the Las Vegas Raiders with the No
He could be the solution to a quarterback room that has rotated between veterans Gardner Minshew II and Aiden O'Connell
Both signed two-year deals in the offseason.
The Raiders (2-4) recently traded star wide receiver Davante Adams to the New York Jets despite being one game back of second place in the division
Las Vegas has the 27th-ranked offense in the league through six weeks
The Raiders haven't had a winning season since 2021.
"A competition between Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell gives way to the selection of Carson Beck," Josh Edwards of CBS Sports wrote
"Beck's potential receiving core took a hit this week with the trade of veteran Davante Adams."
If the projection holds true, Beck would reunite with former Georgia tight end Brock Bowers
13 overall pick leads all tight ends in receptions (37) and yards (384) as a rookie.
There is also potential for Beck to rise up to the top of the draft with a strong finish to the season. The Bulldogs face No. 1 Texas on Saturday with games against No. 18 Ole Miss and No
11 Tennessee remaining on the regular season slate
The high level of competition Beck will face could help him prove his worth to NFL teams ahead of the draft process.
