SUNY Westchester Community College saw increased academic achievement after adopting the CUNY ASAP model
Jacob Wackerhausen/iStock/Getty Images Plus
Providing students with wraparound support is one evidence-based practice that has demonstrated impact on student credit accumulation
the City University of New York created a model of student support that has been duplicated at dozens of colleges to improve outcomes; now the State University of New York system hopes to build on this success on its own campuses
despite headwinds from remote instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic
The background: CUNY created Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) in 2007 as a comprehensive initiative to address barriers to student retention and completion
The core components of ASAP are personalized academic advising
specialized enrollment options and financial aid for course material and transportation costs for three years
ASAP-inspired programs have been implemented at over a dozen institutions in seven states
WCC president Belinda Miles was a part of the ASAP replication initiative in Ohio in 2014
“it wasn’t too long before I ran into ASAP,” she said
Arnold Ventures and MDRC, along with an anonymous donor to the WCC Foundation, provided financial support for the launch of Viking ROADS
In 2023, SUNY chancellor John B. King Jr. announced the system would implement ASAP at 25 of its 64 campuses starting in 2024
results from a three-year MDRC evaluation of Westchester Community College’s program offer guiding principles to peer institutions scaling their own efforts
“We’re delighted to be that pivot campus and a leader amongst our peers,” Miles said
The study: MDRC’s study followed WCC staff and students from 2018 to 2021
Viking ROADS requires WCC students to be enrolled full-time in an eligible major
meet with a dedicated counselor and use college support services monthly
a first-time college student and only enrolled in one developmental education course
A majority of students involved in the Viking ROADS study were traditional college students
with about one in five identifying as a nontraditional student (defined as someone who is older than 24
has children or does not have a high school diploma)
One adaptation of ASAP that Viking ROADS staff implemented was to offer a transportation stipend
rather than a prepaid MetroCard; WCC is a commuter campus and students utilize both their own cars and public transport to reach campus
so having flexibility in how they addressed transportation barriers was key
program participants were more likely to have higher enrollment rates over time and complete more credits
20 percent of program participants had earned degrees
compared with 13.3 percent of control group students
35 percent of program participants had completed an associate degree
compared to 23 percent of the control group
Researchers theorized this gap could be tied to the specialized course enrollment options and academic advising Viking ROADS participants receive
which could help students meet their course requirements and reduce their risk of earning excess credits that don’t support degree completion
“It’s critical that students begin with a person and a plan
here are the steps you take.’ But having a person that’s reliable is something that is critical for students
particularly first-generation students,” Miles said
because some learners may not have supporters at home who understand the bureaucracy of higher education
Program staff also reduce barriers to applying for graduation and making degrees official; among nonparticipants who earned 60 or more credits
compared to 83 percent of Viking ROADS students
“Despite the challenges that were posed by the COVID-19 pandemic
Viking ROADS still had large effects on three-year graduation rates
confirming the strength and adaptability of the ASAP model,” according to the report
“Viking ROADS not only helped students navigate the immediate disruptions that were caused by the pandemic but also supported their continued academic progress and degree attainment.”
What’s next: In the same way Miles brought her work with ASAP to WCC
she and her staff plan to contribute to a community of practice for the other SUNY campuses joining these efforts
“I’m happy to share with colleagues what our story is and how we keep it going and how we keep expanding
Funding and providing resources for wraparound services can be a barrier to scaling initiatives
but reallocating and redesigning existing services to better address student needs is one way Miles said she is looking to expand student success efforts at WCC

Tredyffrin/Easttown School District statement
A special education teacher is facing 63 charges in connection with an alleged sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student
– A special education teacher at Conestoga High School is facing 63 charges in connection with an alleged sexual relationship with a student at the school
The District Attorney's Office of Chester County says Michelle Mercogliano
began a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student and also provided him with marijuana
Mercogliano has been charged with institutional sexual assault
The charges come just two days after the Tredyffrin Township Police Department said it was notified of an inappropriate sexual relationship between Mercogliano and the male student on Monday
Tredyffrin police quickly launched an investigation that included interviews with the student and several of his family members
The student told police that he and Mercogliano had sex approximately 12 times
He also said the teacher would provide him with medical marijuana which they smoked together before having sex
"You don't know what people are like and what they do
so it's scary," said a district parent in reaction to learning of the charges
Police say the student was able to describe Mercogliano's bedroom in her parents' Tredyffrin home
where he said he and the teacher smoked marijuana and had sex
The student also told police that his relationship with Mercogliano began early in the school year when he was late for school and Mercogliano asked his friends for his Snapchat handle to offer him a ride
The detective who spoke with the student on Monday said he observed that the teacher repeatedly messaged the student on his cell phone during their interview
the detective approached Mercogliano outside Conestoga High School and seized her cell phone
and her attorney is arranging a time for her to turn herself in
The office also said police immediately worked with the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District to prevent Mercogliano from having further contact with students
"Parents and students should be able to trust their teachers," Chester County District Attorney Christopher L
"The Defendant broke the law and destroyed that trust
Mercogliano's LinkedIn profile says she has been employed with Tredyffrin/Easttown School District for more than 10 years
first as a special education paraeducator and more recently as an autistic support teacher
"You trust that when your kids go to school
that they're in a safe place with people who are going to make a positive impression on them
The district's superintendent said Mercogliano was placed on leave immediately and she no longer has access to district property
Read the full statement from the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District
Tredyffrin Township Police and the Chester County District Attorney informed the District that charges have been filed against a Conestoga High School teacher
related to alleged unlawful conduct with a Conestoga High School student
Mercogliano was placed on leave yesterday immediately after the District was made aware of the investigation
and she no longer has access to District property
The District appreciates the work of the Tredyffrin Township Police Department and District Attorney and is cooperating with the investigation
Out of respect for student privacy and the integrity of the investigation
the District will not provide additional comment or details at this time."
Mercogliano began teaching at Conestoga this past fall
She was a teacher at Hillside Elementary School from 2019 to 2024 and a paraprofessional at Hillside Elementary and Valley Forge Elementary Schools from 2014 to 2018
We have no information at this time to indicate that the criminal investigation involves other students
if you have details you believe are relevant to this investigation

If anyone told West Nyack resident Vinnie Cann five years ago she'd be co-running a business
a home-based heirloom baked goods/jam company with her youngest daughter
and did so while being seven months pregnant," Cann said
but it’s amazing what you learn about your child when spending that much time together."
Working side by side with one's offspring is
It's also a learning experience as parents often value their son or daughter's fresh energy and creativity while the younger generation appreciates the wisdom and guidance a parent provides

the business has also enriched their mother/son relationship
"It's taught us the importance of really listening and making sure we’re both on the same page," said Tyrone
"Communication isn’t just talking; it’s making sure your message actually lands and is understood
that’s been huge for us — not just as business partners

Carlos and Olga Santos have worked together for the better part of a decade

Carlos admits their relationship has shifted over the years

There's no one I trust more and no one that always has my best interests in mind
"Working with her is the honor of my life."

Looking down from the upper floor of Lorenzo’s Pizza
you could see a crowd gathering at the historic courthouse
Bright colored signs broke up the gray day
cheers rising from the street below.
as a large protest sign leaned against the wall beside them
A quiet respite from the loud cheering outside
Hands Off organized more than 1,200 nationwide protests against the Trump administration and its actions
Hands Off is a movement led by a coalition of over 200 groups
The movement does not center on one issue; rather
it is an attempt to face the many issues they believe are being created or perpetuated by the Trump administration.
“We are facing a national crisis,” Hands Off’s website reads
and our rights are all on the line as Trump and Musk execute their illegal takeover.”
Photo of impactful protest sign: “Even Jesus would not forgive what you do”
The page clarifies their concerns about the administration
such as the dismantling of Social Security and Medicare
People are becoming increasingly concerned as government agencies
are experiencing mass-layoffs and changes to the standard processes
This is creating stress and complications for those seeking assistance
primarily seniors and people with disabilities
three protests were formed within the Philadelphia area
and two others were organized in the suburbs
one in West Chester and the other in Media
The West Chester protest saw a gathering of approximately 6,000 people
Speakers at the event included Downingtown Mayor Phil Dague
who expressed their concerns about the path ahead in the face of the Trump administration.
“This isn’t about Republicans or Democrats,” Mayor Phil Dague said before introducing the speakers
The protest centered at the historic courthouse on North High Street
where the speakers stood on the steps with their voices broadcast throughout the area
“This is a historic location where we come when we have something to say
from the looks of this enormous crowd that has shut West Chester down,” said Houlahan
as the crowd chanted cheers that echoed through the streets
many waving and cheering alongside the crowds
“You are adding your voice to this conversation,” Houlahan declared
cheers rising at Houlahan’s words and a sign that read
“Silence is Complicity,” reflecting her own words back to her
discussing a variety of issues facing the American people
and making it clear that the Trump administration is failing the people
Donald Trump has taken the best economy and tanked it,” Houlahan stated
“He has installed the least qualified and most dangerous cabinet in the history of this nation.”
“He has unleashed his co-president and his posse of tech bros to wreak havoc on everything from Social Security to Medicare
Her implications of Elon Musk’s involvement in the government raised voices once again
Musk’s popularity was at an all-time low in the crowd that day
with signs dedicated to his actions and involvement prevalent among them
“There’s only one immigrant taking away American jobs,” one read
“F’Elon”- a creative combination of Musk’s name
the word “felon,” and a particularly popular insult.
State Representative Chris Peilli stepped forward to talk about the cutting of over 80,000 Veterans Affairs jobs
among other extreme cuts in government funding
“Donald Trump was right about one thing: We’re being screwed
It’s definitely not by veterans; it’s not by any of you folks here,” Peili states
“It’s not by trans people or gay people
and the point is they haven’t been paying their fair share.”
He expressed his concern about the slow and expensive processes of healthcare
He suggests that veterans are waiting 6-9 months for their claims decisions
“Ask yourself: does Elon or Trump wait over a year for their healthcare benefits?”
closing down a portion of North High Street in between Market and Gay Street
secondary groups of protesters formed across from the courthouse.
persisted in their messages as the crowd continued to grow.
“I would suggest this: you are all going to have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” Baptiste said
Baptiste encouraged protestors to select where they spend money with caution.
“The only way to get their attention is financial impact.”

Our West Chester community participated in a nationwide protest called the “Hands-Off Protest,” which is directly against the current Trump administration
What did West Chester residents have to say
The “Hands-Off Protest” was the largest one-day protest during Trump’s second term
It also goes by two other names: “National Day of Action” and “50501 for 50 States.” This specific protest was created in response to the current Trump administration’s policies and actions
and Elon Musk’s Nazi habits and rhetoric such as appearing to do the Nazi salute while on stage at Trump’s inauguration
It is estimated that over 1,000 protests were conducted across all 50 states
with an estimated 3 million people that participated in this demonstration for change
They are outraged by the rescinding of women’s bodily autonomy
They are outraged by the blatant racism and rampant misogyny
They are outraged by the unnecessary tariffs
They are outraged by the fascism and the Nazi ideologies
They are outraged by the manipulation of the stock market for the rich’s gain
They are outraged by the statement that our Constitution is upholding unconstitutional values
They are outraged by the un-American president and his posse trying to destroy what our founding fathers built
we have decided to stand against the Trump administration because no president of ours will ruin our democracy
We interviewed a variety of people while at the protest about why they were there and what their opinions were on specific public policies currently happening
most of those we interviewed were not students
The largest demographics at the protest included older people and disabled people expressing their concerns
including our beloved West Chester alumnus and Senator Carolyn Committa
who stressed the importance of voting to make a change and stood with the West Chester people during their time of need
Some have been involved in politics their whole lives
“I came to this protest because I have always been passionate about stuff like this
were struck by the brutality of the administration and wanted to make a stand
even if politics was a new field of interest for them
“I have been involved a little bit but never as much as I have in the last four/eight years,” she recounted
I have seen it on the television and wished I was there.” When asked to give advice about the hard times in America
“[the hard times] will end if they get off their horse and do something!”
“This is my umpteenth protest,” said resident Anne Marie Quinn
“And we need to be here to show up and show out.” She
did not expect Trump to act how he did during his term and didn’t think his voters did
When asked if she had anything to say to Trump voters
We welcome you; we fight for your rights too.”
works in the mental health and healthcare sector
“I deal with Medicare and Medicaid on a daily basis,” she told us
an artist who drew Musk and Trump kissing — a symbolic artwork about the state of our current government

“and I really love it when the gay people kiss.”
there are too many [issues] to put on the sign,” said another anonymous resident
who thinks Trump is destroying the global economy
this protest was a matter of life and death

and I don’t know what to say,” says Rosoff
He knew about COVID in December [referring to Trump’s last term] and didn’t do anything
I don’t want to see in print.” She also speaks of a friend affected by the tragedy
“I just talked to a friend last night who had a normal job and who worked her ass off her whole life
It really is devastating… My real thought is that Satan is at work here
I am a parent of disabled children,” says an anonymous concerned mother
I am a middle-class person who lives in this country
very scared about our rights and about our future
but the people who have fewer rights than me… There is a lot of things that are really scary coming
we have to be brave and stand up and not hide in our houses
Something like this makes you realize you are not alone.”
Some signs were similar to the Black Lives Matter movement five years ago
emphasizing how work still needs to be done on the racial disparities in America
Palestinian and Ukrainian flags could also be easily spotted wherever you looked

“Our daughter is a prosthetist,” said Carol
“She’s worked with Ukrainian soldiers who have lost both their limbs thanks to war
“They had 19,000 soldiers at that time needing prosthetics,” chimed in Allan
“Arms and legs and from a war that was started by Putin.” The couple is in agreement that Trump and Putin are aligned at the moment and sees Ukraine as a blackmailed country fighting for freedom
They are also incredibly angry over Project 2025
pointed out that Trump’s policies would be terrible for young people
never thought this would happen in the United States because of how the Constitution was written
“I feel like my freedom is being taken away because that is what I experienced in Poland
Where I was born in Poland with all the communism
I feel like it is happening over here — our freedom is being taken away
We gotta stand up to it because this is the land of the free.”
“He became a United States citizen because he believed in this country and what we stood for,” chimed his wife
“And we don’t send immigrants who are coming here to make a better life for themselves to Guantanamo Bay or the El Salvador gulag
Other signs were related to women’s and LGBTQ livelihoods
with many in support of protecting transgender children and healthcare
fearing what the administration has in mind
“I came because I am in school to be a teacher,” says Julie
“And I want to be able to teach as a gay woman when I get married.”
Some of the most devastated from this whole ordeal are the young people
When asked if they thought Trump would win
I really just wanted to see if Kalmala won the election
It would have really just made me feel like us younger people had a chance to advance in society
I really thought [that] with all the money raised — I was really hopeful
some think it’s a power play in support of the oligarchy
“There’s so many things to be outraged about
and the end of being the free world is kind of concerning to me… Our democracy is at stake
The general consensus is that everyone wants the government to act on everything happening
“I’d actually like to see them do their job for a second,” said Dan McGinn
“We haven’t seen [Senator] Fetterman around at all
They gotta start doing their jobs.” On the contrary
he thinks that the West Chester community is doing the best they can
“They are doing what they can be doing right now!” he exclaimed
“You’re boycotting the companies that are working with the Trump plans like Home Depot and Target and stuff like that
The West Chester community has brought so many people together with this protest
Those who may have felt in the dark during these hard times can share the burden with their neighbors
this is not a fight against “left” or “right.” This is a fight against fascism
One side for the fascist and the other for democracy
Republicans and Democrats came to the Hands-Off Protest in proof of that
We are all still Americans who care just as deeply for the Constitution
We cannot let the Trump administration divide us any further
Even a small action can lead to one of the biggest events in history
We made history along with the rest of the nation
“We are here!” We are screaming until our voices give away

we already have some teams that have secured their spots in the NCAA tournament
Others will try to do so this week as conference tournaments continue
The top of this week’s USA Lacrosse Women’s Division II Top 20, the final in-season ranking, reflects both of those scenarios
which ran its regular-season unbeaten streak to 60 games
2 Tampa faces a week of rest after securing the SSC’s automatic bid by winning the league championship
3 Florida Southern 15-13 on Sunday to capture its third consecutive Sunshine State Conference tournament title
with the defending champions all but securing the South Region’s top seed for next week’s NCAA tournament
11 Flagler punched its ticket to the NCAA postseason by claiming the automatic qualifier as the Gulf South Conference champion
14 Regis won its sixth straight RMAC championship and returns to the NCAA postseason for the eighth consecutive season
One team that has work to do this week is unranked Wilmington
3 seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
19 Dominican (N.Y.) is the top seed in the CACC tournament and the favorite to capture the league’s AQ
but Wilmington (13-5) is riding the momentum of a new national record into this week’s action
set the national NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse record for goals in a season during Wilmington’s 23-16 home victory over Bridgeport on Saturday
established by Sydney Tiermann of Maryville in 2023
Selections for the expanded NCAA tournament bracket of 24 teams — a combination of conference automatic qualifiers and at-large selections — will be announced Sunday evening at 8:30 p.m
which is compiled by USA Lacrosse Magazine staff and contributors

Mike Lawler faced another raucous audience at his packed Town Hall meeting in Somers
The crowd of about 600 constituents on Sunday evening
jeered and heckled Lawler at times as he explained his positions on a broad range of issues — from the future of Ukraine and President Donald Trump’s tariffs to the deportation of undocumented migrants and the impoundment of funds authorized by Congress
There was tight security in the auditorium of Kennedy Catholic Preparatory School
which included a slew of New York State troopers
who patrolled the auditorium to keep the peace
Two women were carried out by state troopers to stop their heckling
The Town Hall had strict rules: no recordings of the meeting were allowed
and questioners were allowed just 30 seconds for their questions
Dressed in his signature blue blazer and jeans
Lawler touted his bipartisan record in Congress during his first term
He noted that the 17th Congressional District
which includes Rockland and Putnam Counties
was among only 35 of 435 Congressional districts considered competitive for the 2026 election cycle
Cortlandt Manor resident David Weinberger questioned Lawler’s bipartisan prowess in Washington
but meaningful bipartisanship is in votes taken
not in the fig-leaf of co-sponsored bills,” he said
“Now is your time to stand up to the authoritarian Trump regime.”
Lawler said his bills were passed with support from both sides of the aisle
“Bipartisanship is a two-way street,” he said
“It’s not just Republicans acquiescing Democrats
There has to be a give-and-take on these issues.”
Mike Lawler questioned on Trump administration's funding cutsLawler, who represents a swing district that will be hotly contested in 2026, also faced a tough crowd at last week's Town Hall in Rockland County
He plans Town Halls in Putnam and Dutchess in June
Several constituents asked about the Trump administration’s slashing of funding for programs authorized by Congress
and proposed cuts in funding to NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
There were groans throughout the hall when Lawler said that he planned to meet on Monday with the Department of Government Efficiency
which has spearheaded many of the reductions
Lawler said the budget cuts will have to come before Congress under the federal impoundment law
which requires a vote by Congress to defund programs that were previously authorized
“That’s the constitutional process,” Lawler said
Lawler said that he has supported Trump’s tariff policy as a way to fight back against trade barriers put in place by Japan
He noted that Congress and the courts have given deference to the executive branch to enact tariffs
Constitution gives the power to impose tariffs to Congress
Attendees pressed Lawler on what the Republican-led Congress plans to do to regain control over those levies
More: Mike Lawler faces sharp questions at raucous town hall in Rockland. How he answered
Lawler said that the administration is in the process of negotiating deals on the tariffs during the 90-day pause imposed by Trump on tariffs
they have to be putting out trade agreements,” he said
The issue of immigration loomed large on Sunday
When asked about his position on due process in deportation cases
Lawler said he supports the constitutional rights of all individuals in the United States
More: Mike Lawler said he 'secured' $33M for Hudson Valley community projects. What happened?
who was deported to a prison in El Salvador
Lawler said he supports the Supreme Court’s ruling instructing the government to facilitate Garcia' return
But Lawler said Garcia’s return would not free him because he has an outstanding deportation order that needs to be addressed
“He’s going to be released to be deported again,” said Lawler
Lawler reminded the heavily Democratic audience that President Barack Obama deported 3 million migrants during his time in office
“I don’t recall this level of pushback when Obama deported that many,” said Lawler
Lawler held the meeting at Kennedy Catholic Preparatory School along Route 138
a narrow country road that kept protestors away from the site
About 80 anti-Lawler activists stood in a light rain a mile away by the Goldens Bridge train station
brandishing signs criticizing Lawler and Trump
Standing with the protestors were two of five Democrats seeking the party’s nomination to face Lawler in 2026 — Mike Sacks
and Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson
Davidson walked along the line of protestors with a bullhorn
“The national Republicans have been calling our protests an attempt to disrupt the democratic process,” she said
He opened the meeting by telling his constituents that he was glad they came
“I appreciate you taking the time to be here,” he said

West Chester United SC opened their sixth Lamar Hunt U.S
Open Cup campaign against Loudoun United FC of the USL Championship at YSC Sports in Wayne
the home side fell short of moving out of the first round of the competition for the first time in club history
Loudoun’s lineup for this match was heavily rotated
and a few of their players were making their first starts for the club or debuting altogether
In their qualifying matches for the tournament
West Chester United outscored their opponents 14-2
They were one of the favorites to pull off a “cupset” and beat their Division Two opponents
Loudoun United reached the round of sixteen last year and eventually fell 3-0 to LAFC in their debut in the tournament
The club is currently 2nd in the USL Championship table through just two matches
West Chester immediately took control of the ball
and striker Joshua Luchini forced a kick save from close range by Loudoun goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux in the fourth minute
Loudoun pressed up the field and had two chances of their own
but they could not keep their shots on target
West Chester’s midfielders were quick to recover to defend and break up the Loudoun attacks
West Chester earned a penalty in the 17th minute after a quick breakaway enticed a Loudoun defender to commit the foul
Midfielder Yassine Elkahoun stepped up to the spot and opened the scoring with a confident shot to send the French keeper the wrong way
The goal boosted the amateur side’s confidence
allowing Marcus Brenes to get another shot on goal after a solid crossing sequence
The Virginian side’s lack of chemistry became apparent after the goal as they struggled to connect in the final third
Loudoun United found the equalizer in the 37th minute with a volley by Riley Bidois
The goal came off of a big switch to the far side of the field
and a selfless assist from Ben Mines to the striker on the far post
The long ball disoriented the West Chester defense
The goal did not shake the home side’s confidence
They continued to threaten in the attack and slow down the visitors when out of possession
Loudoun United earned a penalty in the 48th minute after Andrew Cooke came off his line and clipped the attacker’s leg
The referee allowed the attacker to get a shot on the advantage but called the penalty after the shot went wide of the net
Christian Sorto converted from twelve yards out to put the away side ahead
Loudoun controlled a vast majority of possession and eventually increased their lead with a ball in behind from Sorto to Bidois
the away side made changes to bring in some older players and hold on to the ball for longer by passing around their defenders
West Chester’s high-pressing style of play earned them a way back into the match after capitalizing on a poor touch from a Loudoun midfielder
The ball was played through the lines by Ayoub Mouhou to Ken Roby
whose right-footed shot went past Hugo Faroux at his back post
Loudoun insisted on playing out of the back instead of using long balls over the top
which allowed West Chester to threaten with their press in hopes of finding an equalizer
Their forward movement in possession was easily broken up by their higher-division opponents
making it difficult to earn chances unless possession was regained close to the box
West Chester fought through five minutes of stoppage time
but could not find the equalizer to send the match to extra time
Ben Mines tugged down Giancarlo Vaccaro on the counter to stop the breakaway
Yassine Elkahoun (Giancarlo Vaccaro– 80′)
Tomas Ascoli and Bobby Hickerson were also substituted on
Surafel Dagnachew (Abdellatif Aboukouba– 70′)
especially picking up on young Dylan Lacy’s play

The lawsuit alleges French company Arkema negligently discharged PFAS into the Goose Creek watershed in West Chester
Aqua Pennsylvania v. Arkema by WHYY News Digital on Scribd
“forever chemicals” exceeded Pa.’s maximum contaminant levels in Bucks
In an interview with WHYY News last year
Aqua said it could cost at least another $250 million dollars to get 36 of its water systems compliant with the new federal rules
Aqua began detecting high levels of PFAS along Goose Creek in West Chester in 2019
The water provider alleges the forever chemicals were discharged from Arkema’s West Chester facility
where acrylates and other specialty chemicals used in surface coatings
Arkema failed to mitigate the contamination and did not inform environmental officials
even though they were likely aware of the risks
was detected at levels as high as 111 parts per trillion in the creek
The lawsuit does not indicate whether the PFAS made their way to customers’ taps
2024 testing results indicate the chemicals were as high as 6 parts per trillion at Aqua’s West Chester water system
It’s not clear how high PFAS levels were in Aqua’s West Chester supply prior to 2024
Aqua’s West Chester water system serves customers in Media and Rose Valley
Almost half of drinking water in the U.S. contains PFAS, according to he U.S. Geological Survey
the EPA estimated at least 6% to 10% of water providers in the U.S
currently do not comply with the agency’s new PFAS regulations

I had an appointment in West Chester last week, so I decided to try out Viva Cincy
a new restaurant that specializes in the cuisines of Mexico
It's a nice-looking space with ample seating (comfy booths included)
The restaurant occupies the corner of a small strip mall a few doors down from Pho 96
even though I've heard great things about it
I ordered the red snapper zarandeado ($36 and enough for two)
Zarandeado is a grilling method that originated in the Mexican state of Nayarit more than 500 years ago
and grilled over hot coals or in a wood-fired oven
and is served topped with pickled onions and pico
ranchero beans and what is simply listed as "side salad," though it's so much more than that
lacquered snapper arrived on a large wood plank and took up half my table
The smoky ranchero beans were cooked with bits of chorizo (an unintentional Lenten violation that I didn't realize until I took my first bite)
avocado and rolled carrot slices with a passion fruit dressing
beans and a variety of hot sauces to create a perfect bite
Other menu items include cochinita pibil ($28)
a traditional Mayan dish of slow-braised pork; grilled octopus ($35) with guajillo adobo
cabbage and roasted chickpeas; carne asada ($24) and a barbacoa melt ($16)
I'll keep you posted as I (hopefully) get around to trying each and every one
