2025 at 2:48 pm CDTExpandWest Dundee will host a French Market
a weekly French market will be held this summer in downtown West Dundee
The Village Board last month approved a special event permit for a market to be held from 4 p.m
to dusk Fridays beginning May 23 and continuing through Aug
22 at the Pump House and adjacent parking lots
The idea surfaced after a 2024 community survey showed a “resounding desire to have some sort of weekly market in West Dundee,” according to materials presented to the board
78% of respondents chose a farmers market – the top request
A relationship was cultivated by the village’s downtown events committee with Bensidoun USA. Founded in France, the Bensidoun family has operated, managed and developed markets for about 60 years.
The company operates 11 markets in the area, including in Chicago, Lisle, Barrington, Wheaton, Geneva, Glen Ellyn and Elmhurst.
The agreement calls for Bensidoun to supply canopies at no cost as well as a site manager and $200 each week for setup and takedown.
According to materials considered by the board, the village pays a one-time cost of $150 per canopy anchor amounting to $10,500 under the current proposed layout using 70 anchors.
As described by the village committee, a French market also is known as a mixed market, where products other than fresh produce are sold. Because the availability of farmers is decreasing, vendors offering honey, greens, soaps, breads, cheeses, flowers and other products may be part of the market mix.
What will be offered in West Dundee depends on which vendors choose to participate. Local vendors are being encouraged to apply.
The market will run the length of the parking lot parallel to the Fox River and be visible from Main, Oregon and First streets, according to the community events committee.
As this point, alcohol sales are not being considered for the weekly markets, although the committee still is exploring options to do so. Food trucks also are being considered.
The market will blend with Finally Friday, featuring live music at the Pump House and a garlic fest planned for August, according to the committee.

Schaumburg Deputy Police Chief Shawn Green will become West Dundee’s next police chief
The village of West Dundee announced the hiring in a news release on Monday
“I am incredibly blessed by the opportunity to join such a great community as the next police chief for the Village of West Dundee,” Green said in the news release
“I am eager to help guide the department into the future
building on the excellent foundation and reputation already in place to enhance the safety and quality of life for all of our residents and visitors.”
Green began his career in Schaumburg 26 years ago and has served as deputy chief since 2022
He has advanced training from the FBI National Academy
the school of police staff and command at Northwestern University
and the National Emergency Management Advanced Academy
He also has a master’s degree in administrative leadership
West Dundee received about 60 applications for the opening and conducted final interviews with four candidates — two from within and two from outside the department — earlier this month
whose annual salary as chief will be $155,000
will lead a department of 19 sworn officers
“With almost half of the West Dundee police department officers currently having two or less years of police experience
Shawn brings depth and years of experience to help mentor and coach the young officers,” West Dundee Village Manager Joe Cavallaro said in the news release
West Dundee Village President Chris Nelson said Green will assist in “mapping a solid future” for the police department
Van’s Frozen Custard could be moving from East Dundee across the river to West Dundee
members of the West Dundee appearance review commission will review a concept plan to transform a shuttered KFC restaurant into the popular frozen custard eatery’s new location
a representative for Van’s Frozen Custard declined to comment but said they would be able to comment later in the week
The decades-old eatery started in Carpentersville before moving to East Dundee in the village’s downtown district near the Fox River bike trail
It appears poised to relocate to West Dundee off Route 72
While it’s popular for its frozen custard treats
would give the restaurant a drive-thru lane and on-site parking

A truck yard with parking for more than 1,000 semis will be opening in West Dundee in late October
The 30-acre yard is located at 70 Airport Road
It is one of four new yards recently announced by Outpost
a Texas-based company with more than 20 locations in the United States
getting into the Chicagoland market has always been a major goal,” said Pat Hardin
The new truck yard will be on the former Elgin landfill
West Dundee Village Manager Joe Cavallaro said the massive asphalt parking lot built for truck parking provided “the best environmental solution” to cap the shuttered landfill
The West Dundee yard will offer more parking than Iowa 80 truck stop
which bills itself as the world’s largest truck stop and offers 900 parking spaces
the West Dundee yard will not be open to the motoring public
It also will not feature the large fueling center with shops and restaurants typically found at truck stops like the Iowa 80
Hardin said the new yard will help meet a dire need for truck parking spots
According to the American Trucking Association
there is only one parking spot for every 11 trucks on the road
“Truck parking is essential infrastructure for our supply chain and the U.S
economy — no different from roads and bridges,” Outpost co-founder and CEO Trent Cameron said in a news release
Trucking companies using the West Dundee yard will have to make a reservation for a spot and enter a code to get into the yard
Reservations are often for multiple months
Companies can use the yard for a single truck or reserve parking for a fleet
“Everyone who is on the yard is preregistered when they come to check in,” Hardin said
He added each yard is staffed and has security cameras and lighting
A fueling station with a 3,000-square-foot building that will include a convenience store and office space also will be built on the property
Cavallaro noted that as part of the development agreement
was donated to the Kane County Forest Preserve District to extend the Voyageur Landing Forest Preserve
will set a world record with more than 1,000 spaces for tractor-trailers and other heavy-duty vehicles—surpassing the more than 900 spaces at the Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott
Owned by Austin, Texas-based Outpost, a network of truck terminals and fleet yard facilities, “the yard expands Outpost’s network into Illinois and increases total truck parking capacity within the state by nearly 9%,” according to a 2020 Illinois Department of Transportation truck parking study, Outpost said
a far northwest Chicago suburb in Kane County
Hardin said Outpost hopes drivers use the facility as a “home base” and companies use it for staging
“As our network continues to expand, motor carriers increasingly look to Outpost as a strategic partner for positioning their fleets
improving asset visibility and optimizing their real estate investments,” Trent Cameron
“This can only be accomplished through our combination of purpose-built technology and the operational expertise of managing yards at scale
Our four new properties strengthen our ability to help these fleets operate more efficiently in critical freight corridors across the U.S.”
Outpost also is adding three other locations to its nationwide network:
Outpost is a network of truck terminals and fleet yard facilities with more than 20 locations and 11,000 spaces
private fleets and owner-operators use truck parking as a flexible part of their transportation infrastructure without the need for major capital investments

7 at the former Carson Pirie Scott at Yorktown Mall in Lombard
(Brian Hill/bhill@dailyherald.com/Brian Hill/bhill@dailyherald.com)
Suburban shoppers will see significant changes as demolition work continues on malls in Bloomingdale and Lombard- and will soon start in West Dundee
Stratford Square in Bloomingdale and Spring Hill in West Dundee — are in the midst of a transformation as villages and ownership reimagine the retail centers
Demolition work has exposed much of the inside of the mall and is expected to be completed by the end of May
“They are about halfway through tearing down the building,” he said
“They have gotten to the interior and made it all the way to what used to be the food court.”
He noted that the former JC Penney and Burlington Coat Factory stores have already been torn down
Work on the Carson Pirie Scott store will commence soon
and the village has worked with the retailer to prepare for its transformation
Scalera said the entrance from Kohl’s into the main part of the mall has already been walled off
and plans call for an exterior entrance on the lower level of Kohl’s
The village purchased the mall properties for $17.25 million
Conceptual plans reimagine the Stratford Square area as “The Grove,” a mixed-use development that would include a meandering boardwalk, illuminated fountain towers, and a large lawn for events, yoga or ice skating.
As the property owner, the village will act as the general contractor bringing individual users to the new space. Scalera said the town is already in talks with potential tenants and hopes to make some of those public later this year.
“It’s an exciting time in our community,” he said of the development.
Demolition of the old Carson Pirie Scott store continues and is expected to be complete by the end of February, Lombard Community Development Director William Heniff said.
The former Carson’s store will be replaced by a green space between the remaining mall and a luxury apartment development called Yorktown Reserve.
The construction phase at Yorktown Reserve is expected to start later this year and will include 271 units. Village officials anticipate having the first phase completed sometime next year.
The center also has welcomed some new restaurants, including Ancho & Agave, Empire Burgers + Brew and Dave & Buster’s. A Fresh Market grocery store is expected to open in 2026.
“There’s a lot of synergies there,” said Phil Domenico, one of the owners of Synergy Construction & Development, the company building the luxury apartments next to the mall.
At the mall, some interior-facing stores will have exterior access where the Carson’s store entrance into the mall once stood.
Heniff said the mix of shops and residential is a growing trend as shopping malls look for ways to repurpose the space once occupied by large anchor retailers.
“Instead of an empty sea of parking, you have residences there,” he said, noting the convenience of having shopping close to residences benefits both.
In West Dundee, village trustees recently approved a $3.6 million contract for crews to tear down Spring Hill Mall. Demolition work, which excludes the Kohl’s store and Cinemark theater, is expected to start sometime in March.
Though the mall straddles both West Dundee and Carpentersville, most of the mall is within West Dundee.
he village spent $9.3 million to purchase the mall, including the former Carson’s, Sears and Macy’s stores. Part of the purchased property, such as the former Carson’s store, is in Carpentersville.
West Dundee officials envision a mixed-use development featuring retail, residential and restaurants and are hopeful demolition and cleanup of the mall property will spark developer interest.
“We expect that once the demolition starts in earnest, we’ll start seeing more interest in the property,” West Dundee Village Manager Joe Cavallaro said.
Though Kohl’s recently announced plans to shutter its store at Spring Hill Mall, Cavallaro said West Dundee has no plans to purchase the property. The Kohl’s store at the mall is within the village of Carpentersville.

Texas-based company is set to open a 30-acre truck stop in West Dundee in mid- to late October
Illinois may soon be home to the world’s largest truck stop — at least according to number of parking spots
is set to open a 30-acre truck stop in West Dundee in mid-to-late October
“Chicago is really the crown jewel of transportation in this country,” Hardin said Monday
“[And West Dundee] has access to the city without hitting the city traffic.”
The company says the more than 1,000 tractor-trailer spaces will make it the largest truck parking yard in the country — surpassing the more than 900 parking spots at the Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott
which claims to be the world’s largest truck stop
the Iowa stop will still beat out the new Illinois lot when it comes to size
repair shops and a dealership — compared to the Dundee stop’s 30 acres
Hardin said they want drivers to use the lot as a “home base” and companies to use it for staging
It will also serve as short-term parking for truckers
truck wash and fueling station are all set to be added by the spring
A 2020 Federal Highway Administration study found 95% of truck drivers say they struggle to find parking
It also highlighted the Chicago area as one of the worst in the nation for truck parking shortages
with the state of Illinois losing parking capacity for semis between 2014 and 2019
A federal bill aiming to provide $755 million in funding for increasing safe and legal parking spaces for truckers was introduced in March 2021 but has yet to make it out of committee
“We want anybody who can help to help,” Hardin said
“Public and private partnerships will ultimately make the U.S
It can’t just be prioritized at one level.”
As for the title of the world’s largest truck stop
Hardin said that’s for the public to decide
“I think we’ll let everyone else determine who has the most appropriate title,” he said with a laugh

Emmett’s Tavern & Brewing Co. is celebrating 25 years in West Dundee the way any venerable downtown institution would … with adult Big Wheel races
The restaurant and brewing house is honoring their quarter century at 128 W
“Very few places make it past their first year
“I think I would attribute our staying power to making connections in the community.”
Burns developed a taste for craft beer and the industry while studying at Marquette University and living in Milwaukee
He started doing some home brewing in college before graduating and joining the Marine Corps
where he trained on the West Coast and experienced their exploding craft beer scene
“The number of microbreweries that were popping up out there
the amount of craft beer on the grocery shelf
we didn’t have anything like that here,” he said
“It kind of smelled like an opportunity to me.”
He started to put his plan in action once he moved back to the Chicago area
his family and a group of investors bought the Hunt’s Block building on Main Street
Burns said there were two potential paths for brewers at that time: either open a manufacturing plant to sell retail or open a brew pub
“With retail you’re fighting for shelf space and trying to educate the consumer on your product
but you’re relying on a third party to do it,” he said
“I knew how difficult restaurants were as a business model
but it just seemed safer to be able to make that connection with customers.”
Emmett’s has about five core beers that they always keep on tap
“Sometimes people just fall in love with a certain beer
and that’s what they’re coming for,” he said
Burns said they offer as many as seven other styles of classic beer
“We don’t chase trends everywhere,” he said
“You see some insane things happening at some breweries
well-documented beer styles from around the world and we like to use that as our launching point for what we want to bring.”
While they’re calling Saturday’s event their First Annual Brewfest
they’ve held countless events over the years
which started as a neighborhood gag with his friends
one of his friends suggested they get together for beers at Emmett’s on St
Patrick’s Day then race down a nearby hill
“About a dozen of us rode down that hill that day
From there it grew into an annual event on St
Patrick’s Day until they paused during COVID
they wanted to do it when it was warmer and more people would want to hang out and enjoy it
The anniversary festival made for the perfect showcase
the same good fun we’ve been having over the last decade

ExpandThe Kohl's store at Spring Hill Mall in Carpentersville and West Dundee
A Kohl’s store on the Carpentersville side of the otherwise-shuttered Spring Hill Mall will close by April, the Wisconsin-based retailer announced
The store is among 27 in 15 states that will cease operations. A Kohl’s store in Plainfield is the only other one in Illinois on the list
“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base
these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the company said in its announcement Thursday
Employees have been informed and offered a severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s
More than 1,100 other Kohl’s stores are unaffected
“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy
it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams,” CEO Tom Kingsbury said in the announcement
Spring Hill Mall straddles the West Dundee and Carpentersville border
Although the Kohl’s store has a West Dundee address
Carpentersville Village Manager John O’Sullivan called Kohl’s “a great partner.”
Village officials understand the pending closure is a business decision that’s larger than just the Carpentersville location
The pending closure will leave a Walmart store as the only big-box retailer in the village
“Now we have to work on next steps,” he said
West Dundee spent $7 million to complete its purchase of the mall
which closed in March after 44 years in business
The village earlier had spent more than $3 million to buy the former Macy’s and Sears spaces there
Village officials plan to demolish the 500,000-square-foot structure and redevelop the land
The village had agreed to build a new exterior wall for the Kohl’s space once the rest of the mall is demolished, and that agreement stands, West Dundee Village Manager Joe Cavallaro said.
“Kohl’s has given us no indication that there’s any intention [to sell] the property,” he said.
