It's not too often that former and future Boilermakers get to share time on the basketball court together
But when former Purdue center Trevion Williams and future guard Omer Mayer played for Tel Aviv Maccabi over the weekend
Tel Aviv Maccabi played Ness Ziona in EuroLeague action
Mayer got the basketball on the wing for a potential three-point shot
he found a wide-open Williams heading toward the basket and delivered a beautiful pass for a one-handed alley-oop finish

That was a pretty cool moment, especially now that both players have Purdue ties. Mayer committed to play for coach Matt Painter and the Boilermakers earlier this spring and will arrive in West Lafayette for the 2025-26 season
Williams played in 130 career games with the Boilermakers
7.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game across his four seasons in West Lafayette
He scored more than 1,400 points and grabbed more than 900 rebounds at Purdue
both played big contributing roles in Tel Aviv Maccabi's 96-73 win over Ness Ziona
dished out five assists and recorded a steal in 11 minutes on the floor

Q: Do you think the recent portal additions have significantly increased the chances they can be competitive with the middle of the pack or lower B1G teams this year? -bear_down_chicago_89A: I do. I think the quality of the spring portal additions has been better than what we saw in December/January. I really like the five offensive line additions. Here is what the On3 Georgia writer told me about Marques Easley: “He’s a massive athlete
A lot like (Nitro) Tuggle in that he’s talented but the off the field stuff came out of left field
He should be a Day One starter and be an all-conference-type player at some point.”

I am bit more optimistic with some of these spring portal additions
And the schedule is unforgiving for a second season in a row
Q: Which incoming transfer from the last week do you think will have the biggest impact next season? -JTBoiler11A: Tuggle is the obvious choice just because of his skill-set/talent and the yawning needs for help at wideout. I also think LB Sanders Ellis could be impactful at another position that’s desperate to an upgrade
Q: How do you see touches at running back shaking out next year? Do you see all four of Devin Mockobee, Malachi Thomas, Jaheim Merriweather
getting what I would guess 60 percent of the carries with Thomas getting the bulk of the rest
The others probably will just be spotted in

— Purdue Research Foundation CEO Chad Pittman
also a colonel in the Indiana Army National Guard
received a written reprimand last year for his behavior while deployed to Taiwan
The investigator into allegations of misconduct while in Taiwan also recommended in a report that Pittman be removed from command in Taiwan
Army officials substantiated the investigation while not providing details
Pittman generally denied the allegations and said in a statement
"I was never asked to depart Taiwan by Taiwanese officials."
Nowhere in the investigation memo or the reprimand memo does it indicate that Taiwanese officials asked Pittman to leave their country
"My relationship with Taiwan leaders at the highest levels of government and the friends I have made on the island is steadfast."
"You are hereby reprimanded for violating a punitive provision of United States Army Pacific ..
during a dinner with senior leaders of Taiwan's military
you failed to consume alcohol in moderation
You drank so much alcohol that you vomited on yourself and had to be removed from dinner by your subordinates at the request of a senior foreign military partner."
director of Indiana Army National Guard Strategic Communication and Public Affairs
said the investigation and its outcome are confidential
obtained a copy of the investigation memorandum and the memorandum of reprimand
Pittman was previously assigned to the Indo-Pacific Area of Responsibility
but we don’t discuss further details of individual duties," Col
The matter was referred to the Indiana Army National Guard.”
"appears to be part of a leaked early-stage confidential memorandum that does not reflect the full context or final outcome."
Pittman emailed a prepared statement through his public relations firm Thursday in response to the Journal & Courier's requests from comment
The investigation memorandum was prepared and presented to Bartholomees for his consideration on Sept
"I was exonerated of claims that were made by disgruntled subordinates."
Bartholomees' memorandum indicated that Pittman was reprimanded
The reprimand document states it is an administrative measure
not a punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice
The investigator's memorandum states: "Blaming others
shifting blame or actively criticizing others for mistakes behind their backs seem to be a recurring theme within the (Reserved Capability Advisory Team)
most of the interviews demonstrate that Col
was an active participant or allowed for others to do the same in his presence."
Pittman's written comments included an explanation for the allegations
I had a member of my team who was upset that I empowered two junior team members who were more capable to run the operation
I still stand behind that decision and believe it was the right move."
The two subordinates likely are a captain and a major who other team members believed were Pittman's favorites
found that the major made statements that were inconsistent with other evidence
is described in the report as Pittman's drinking buddy
These three officers did not tell the investigator anything negative about Pittman
which is contrasted by many other soldiers — enlisted and officers — who were very direct about what they directly saw and heard from Pittman
"I am a patriot and laser focused on advancing innovation in our state because that is what America needs from me," Pittman said
The investigation memo also stated that Pittman treated military personnel with dignity and respect
but it also found that Pittman demonstrated destructive leadership behavior
It said: "Pittman demonstrated self-serving behavior
placing his own work and accomplishments ahead of the others' and the mission
displaying narcissistic tendencies and exhibiting a sense of entitlement
"He also demonstrated leadership incompetence behaviors such as unengaging leadership
Pittman was accused of making self-aggrandizing claims
Lapthe Flora's investigation of his actions
Flora retired before the investigation was completed
the Journal & Courier asked Pittman to discuss the nature of Flora's investigation and his alleged leadership incompetence and poor judgment
“I have been advised to direct all questions related to my military service to the Indiana National Guard,” he said
Although the investigation memo cites several of Pittman's behavior and leadership shortcomings that other soldiers substantiated
Pittman was reprimanded only for becoming drunk at a Chinese New Year party in February 2024
"The incident in which I was intoxicated was at a Lunar New Year partner event
and I self-reported the following day to my superior officers that I was overserved that night," Pittman said in his written comment distributed by Bose Public Affairs Group
"I received the appropriate performance-based counseling and assured that this behavior would not be repeated."
I expect your behavior to be beyond reproach," Bartholomees wrote in the reprimand
"The United States Army trusted you to behave responsibly in executing a sensitive mission in a forward-deployed overseas area of operations with important foreign partners
"You failed to comport yourself as a senior leader," the major general wrote of Pittman's drunkenness
"There is absolutely no excuse for your absence of professionalism
This misconduct demonstrates your poor judgment and lack of maturity
You have set a terrible example for your subordinates and foreign partners."
found that a lieutenant colonel saw Pittman vomit on his shirt during dinner at a Chinese New Year celebration
A warrant officer told Perez-Marsden: "I noticed Col
Pittman was heavily slurring his words while trying to give little speeches and there was food falling out of fall his mouth while he was trying to eat."
The warrant officer told the Army's investigator that a Taiwanese colonel asked him to remove Pittman from the dinner
The Taiwanese colonel pointed the warrant officer to look at a Taiwanese two-star general's face
which showed disapproval at Pittman's actions
A master sergeant and the warrant officer took Pittman to his hotel room
In the company of Taiwanese women?Pittman's behavior raised security concerns
Five other officers noted that Pittman had relationships with Taiwanese women
"Pittman was unprofessional when he brought two young Taiwanese females to a going-away dinner," the investigative memo states
citing a warrant officer's comments to the investigators
Pittman described one of the women as a translator
The woman who was Pittman's translator and "language tutor" told a U.S
warrant officer that she randomly met Pittman at a "tourists' location and became his tutor." The warrant officer told investigators that he believed the woman was acting as his secretary
making bookings for him and translating for Pittman and his family when he met with business partners who visited Taiwan
The warrant officer described the other woman who frequently was in Pittman's company "as a 20-year-old sophomore from National Taiwan University" who met Pittman at a popular expat bar in Taipei
Pittman admitted the relationship with "Renee," his Chinese language tutor who Pittman said became a family friend
Pittman said he believed he reported his tutor through the field service office as a foreign contact
who then reported it to the Defense Information System for Security
"No one informed him that he was not authorized to socialize or learn Chinese from a foreign national," the investigator's memo states
citing Pittman's response to the investigator's questions
Pittman's responded to the Journal & Courier about those allegations
saying they were baseless and unsubstantiated by the U.S
Allegation of working for PRF while posted in TaiwanThree months after the reprimand
promoted Pittman from the foundation's vice president to its CEO
The first month that Pittman took over as CEO of the foundation, it announced a strategic partnership with Taiwan
Although Pittman wasn't reprimanded for it
several of his subordinates in Taiwan reported to the investigator that Pittman frequently visited different universities on the island
"We often wondered if he was doing his civilian work while he was here since he works for a college back in the U.S
and has Taiwanese companies as his clients," one subordinate told the investigators
Pittman's subordinates said these meetings were unrelated to the Army unit's mission
Pittman said these were baseless claims and unsubstantiated
Pittman currently is assigned as the 54th Security Force assistance brigade commander
director of strategic communications and public affairs officer for the 219th Engineer Brigade
I was selected for command through a national-level board by people who had full knowledge of the investigation and the findings
and my senior rater assessed me as the top colonel under his rating
citing my impact on national security and regional stability," Pittman said
"I remain honored to serve in my 24th year in the Indiana Army National Guard."

When it comes to recruiting at the high school level
Purdue fans have adopted a new hashtag that reaffirms their belief in coach Matt Painter
when mentioning future Boilermaker and 2026 commit Luke Ertel
currently the only commit in Purdue's 2026 recruiting class
was featured on SportsCenter NEXT's social media account over the weekend
Highlights came as the 6-foot-1 guard played for Indiana Elite (AAU) over the weekend
grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists in a win over Team Loaded
Purdue fans are gonna love 2026 committed Luke Ertel pic.twitter.com/uIHbSBOHOS
Ertel is coming off a stellar junior campaign at the high school level
6.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game at Mount Vernon High School
The Marauders finished the season with a 21-6 record
reaching the semistate round of the IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament
Ertel was named to the state's Underclass "Supreme 15" for the 2024-25 season and was also an Indiana Junior All-Star selection
He will likely be among the top candidates for Indiana Mr
Painter has done an excellent job of identifying talent on the recruiting front
especially when it comes to recent Purdue players such as Carsen Edwards
It looks like Ertel has the potential to be another perfect fit into Purdue's culture and system in West Lafayette
The Kentucky Wildcats and Purdue Boilermakers are two of the top college basketball programs in the nation
Both programs have turned into elite destinations for recruits and transfer portal players over the years
Looking ahead to the 2026 recruiting class
there is one specific prospect the two teams are battling hard against each other to get
That 2026 prospect is none other than Overtime Elite guard Tay Kinney, who is currently ranked as a four-star prospect by On3 Sports
has received heavy interest from many of the top programs around the nation
Kentucky and Purdue lead the way for his services
the Wildcats are leading slightly with a 35% chance of landing his commitment
Matt Painter and the Boilermakers are right behind them with a 30.7% chance of landing Kinney
Outside of the two front-runners in Kentucky and Purdue
Cincinnati is being given a 7.1% chance to land him
3 point guard in the 2026 recruiting class and is also the No
On3 Sports also has Kinney's NIL valuation at around $700,000 and his roster value at $686,000
There is no current timeline of when the talented point guard could make his commitment
Both the Wildcats and Boilermakers have a shot at landing his services
but there is no guarantee in the recruiting world

Hungover with disappointment following Purdue's 3-0 loss to Louisville in the regional semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament
What awaited Shondell when he returned to campus was harsher than the bitter cold of a Midwestern winter
He was about to be hit with a flurry of text messages and phone calls from four members of his team
all wanting to talk about the transfer portal
It started with redshirt sophomore Lizzie Carr
who had asked her coach for a meeting upon their return to Purdue
immediately you know that this could be a situation where we're talking about her leaving," Shondell said
An incredibly hard worker in the practice gym
Carr saw limited action during her three seasons in West Lafayette
Following a productive conversation with the 6-foot-6 middle blocker
Shondell understood her interest in exploring new options
Purdue had been hit with a snowball when Carr decided to enter the transfer portal
Little did Shondell and his staff know that the volleyball program was about to be buried in an avalanche of bad news
Two-time All-American outside hitter Eva Hudson and two-time All-Big Ten outside hitter Chloe Chicoine were preparing to pack their bags — and not just for the holiday break
I'm out doing stuff around the house and I missed a call from Eva," Shondell said
'Thank you for everything that you've done
but I feel it's in my best interest to go in the portal.'
"My head is starting to spin a little bit at this point
One of the best players you've ever coached
who has played virtually every single point for three years
Very short conversation and she basically says the same thing (Eva said)
The last bit of bad news came after Hudson and Chicoine told Shondell of their plans
Five-year veteran and middle blocker Lourdes Myers also let her coach know she was entering the transfer portal
He didn't have much of a rebuttal for Myers
having received four lumps of coal shortly before Santa Claus was due for his Christmas Eve voyage
In the 48 hours after Purdue's 27-7 season came to an end
four Boilermakers were heading out the door
It was something nobody in West Lafayette — or the college volleyball world — had anticipated
"We really kind of got caught off guard
"As a coaching staff the week prior (to the NCAA Tournament)
we had those discussions — is there anybody we need to be concerned about who might hit the portal
None of us felt like we had anybody who was going to leave."
Like a bear preparing for those frigid winter temperatures
Shondell went into hibernation for a few days
Shondell's smiling face popped up in a video posted to social media
Walking on a treadmill inside his home to avoid a chilly December morning
the 22-year Purdue coach had awoken from his slumber with a more positive perspective
but Shondell digested what had unfolded and knew he had to get back to work
there's no time to rest for teams competing in the best volleyball conference in the country
Knowing they had some holes to fill with the departures of Carr
members of the Purdue coaching staff went to work
"When you're trying to compete at the top of the Big Ten
the first thing you're doing is looking in the portal and saying
Who can help us do that who we can get to come to Purdue?'" Shondell said
Purdue was quick to land former Notre Dame and USC standout Lindsey Miller
Then came commitments from outside hitters Akasha Anderson (Auburn
The Boilers rounded out their time in the portal with pledges from middle blockers Dior Charles (Wake Forest) and Bianka Lulic (Miami)
Shondell's attitude completely changed
"What was kind of the saving grace for me
what lifted me back up was that everyone I talked to from the portal was excited about Purdue," he said
"Their impression of Purdue volleyball and the university was extremely positive
'Why did so-and-so leave?' They didn't care
They just knew there was a spot here."
Purdue has staked its claim as one of the top programs in the Big Ten under Shondell's guidance
The Boilermakers have won 21 matches or more in seven of the last eight seasons
with the lone outlier being the 2020 COVID-19-shortened campaign
Purdue's Holloway Gymnasium sold out every home match
posting conference attendance records of 14,876 in matches against Indiana and Wisconsin
Purdue's status in college volleyball has risen to the top
resources and support has reached new heights
exploding in popularity and establishing a standard for success
When the offseason resembled a revolving door of departures
"The first thing you're thinking is 'How is this going to look to the outside world
What are people going to think is going on at Purdue
Why would those players (enter the transfer portal)?' he said
you really have to start evaluating what happened
more communication with them — there's always that
After watching what has transpired across the country the last six months
you realize it's going to happen to everybody
you're not going to learn and get better
I did take it personal — not that I was angry with those players
and while Shondell had some internal battles regarding the culture in West Lafayette
many in the transfer portal considered Purdue one of the top destinations in the sport
that only one needed to visit campus before committing
Charles was the only one who put boots to pavement in West Lafayette
The others were quick to grab their tickets to play for one of the Big Ten's best programs
That helped Shondell hit the reset button heading into a new year
"For those players to commit to us within two days certainly changed my attitude and my mentality about where we were," he said
and was just really blessed and fortunate that it happened that way."
grass began showing signs of green life and the 14,000 trees across the Purdue campus started to bloom
A new season in West Lafayette meant the doors to Holloway Gymnasium were about to crack open
On the 2025 spring roster is a 50/50 mix of returning talent and new players
Eight players from the 2024 squad are back
including key contributors Kenna Wollard (outside hitter)
Ryan McAleer (defensive specialist) and Taylor Anderson (setter)
The other seven are newcomers — five transfers and two freshmen
When those transfer players — Lindsey Miller
Nataly Moravec and Dior Charles — finally stepped on Purdue's campus
their eyes were opened to a new world of college volleyball
"It's amazing when you get these players who come in from other schools
they can't believe what a great situation we have at Purdue," Shondell said
"They're blown away by the support we have here
all the people we have around — it's just been neat to hear them say those things."
With elite resources comes high expectations
There was no time to stand around wide-eyed and gawk at what Purdue had to offer
It was time to get to work in West Lafayette and begin the process of building a championship-caliber team
was ready to get back to offseason training
"Getting those players committed certainly raised our enthusiasm
but now you've got to find a way to help them compete in the best conference in the country," he said
"We knew we had certain things to improve on in this situation."
Top priorities for the Boilermakers during the offseason included improving on first-ball contact and power hitting
Purdue did lose two of the hardest-hitting players in the Big Ten with Hudson heading to Kentucky and Chicoine committing to Louisville
Serve-receive issues proved to be costly in Purdue's seven losses in the 2024 campaign
Correcting that was a major focus during those training sessions
it's going to be awfully difficult to win matches
Improvement on the court is only half the battle in a team sport
With a roster featuring a healthy mix of returners and newcomers
getting acquainted with new teammates is just as important
"We've set up some things this semester to pull this team together
we have eight players who return and seven newcomers
That allowed us to set up a 'buddy system,' Shondell said
they go out and do something fun with one of their new teammates — whether that be going to make candles
Woven into Purdue's spring season was a schedule with five matches
which tested Purdue's blend of on-court training and team chemistry
The Boilers hosted three matches at Holloway Gymnasium
Miami (Ohio) and Loyola Chicago in late March and early April
Purdue traveled to Fishers (Ind.) to play Vanderbilt at a neutral-site location and closed out the spring schedule with a trip to Muncie for a match against Ball State
It's important not to slip into the habit of reading too much into spring exhibitions — there are too many variables to consider
But Purdue's success in those five matches — especially with McAleer
Charles and Anderson sidelined due to injury — serves as a sign that
through the avalanche of bad news from the winter
the Boilermakers can dig themselves out and remain near the top of the Big Ten
December was one of the most difficult months Shondell has endured in more than 20 years at Purdue
he questioned whether or not he should return as the leader of the program
It didn't take him long to nix the thought of leaving
Purdue took a chance on Shondell back in February 2003
hiring him away from Muncie Central High School
He wasn't about to bail on the school during one of the program's toughest moments
"I decided I needed to come back and make this thing work for two reasons: (Former athletic director) Morgan Burke hired me out of high school — I was a high school coach
my family's life in such a positive way
"I also owed it to these kids who wanted to come back and play
and these freshmen who were coming in and committed their college lives to Purdue
Shondell wants to win a lot more volleyball matches while he's at Purdue
and he's hopeful that this year's team will continue to keep the Boilermakers near the top of the Big Ten standings
But what brings him the most excitement about this next chapter is the opportunity to coach a hard-working
They knew that we had hit a low level and everyone was here to make it better," he said

Missouri women's basketball officially signed Purdue transfer Jayla Smith
The pair of Big 10 veterans bring Missouri's roster count to 11
Smith brings four seasons of experience to the program
now becoming the most experienced player on the roster
Her senior season was cut short after two games due to injury
but she played in 92 games throughout her first three years
Her strongest statistical outing was the 2022-2023 season
in which she hit career highs in each of the five major counting stats
and 1.2 assists while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 28.1 percent from 3-point range
While her 3-point shooting splits have taken a dip down to 18.8 percent in her last full season
it's possible Harper's offense can unlock a the volume shooting ability Smith once had
Smith hit two or more threes while shooting at least 50 percent from deep eight times
becoming now one of six Tigers to be 6 feet or above
She provides valuable size to the wing rotation
along with the defensive tools to tie together the full package
she'll be entering her junior season after spending her first two years at Rutgers
Thompson's best season was also her sophomore campaign
where she averaged a career high 6.7 points
1.9 rebounds,1.3 assists and shot 32 percent from deep while starting 20 of 31 games
her shooting would take a major hit — dropping down to 19.2 percent from deep
Her dip in efficiency coincided with a decrease in minutes
Thompson has a legitimate chance to reach career-high marks in 3-point percentage with the Tigers
joining a team with many capable shooters and scorers to create open looks for her
Thompson has a tight handle that she can use to carve her way to the basket
she plays with a strong sense of downhill urgency – able to push the pace and run transition

most recently coached under former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer at UAB for two seasons as wide receivers coach
Appleby got his start in coaching in 2018 at Division III power Mount Union (Ohio)
He was quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator in his lone season there before joining Central Michigan's staff as a quality control coach
He spent the next three seasons under Bobby Petrino at Missouri State as wide receivers coach
Insider: What questions did Purdue answer during spring practice; what questions remain?
Appleby redshirted in 2012 before playing parts of three seasons with the Boilermakers
19 touchdowns and as many interceptions while completing 55.3% of passes
He added 290 yards rushing and nine touchdowns while going 2-9 as a starter
He finished his playing career at Florida in 2016

He joined the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers on a future contract but retired at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic
(WISH) — A South Korean company wants to bring a manufacturing facility to central Indiana
but residents are pushing back on the plan
Chip manufacturer SK hynix wants to build an advanced chip-packaging facility in West Lafayette
These are the types of chips needed in phones
It will be a more than $3.8 billion plant. News 8 first reported on the project when it was announced in April 2024.
filed by the Purdue Research Foundation for the project
was recommended for denial by the Area Plan Commission in March
The construction site is north of Kalberer Road between Yeager Road and Tippecanoe County Road 50 West
The plans will go before the West Lafayette City Council for a final vote during its meeting at 6:30 p.m
People have voiced concerns about the risks to their health and the environment if land that is zoned as residential is rezoned to allow an industrial computer chip facility to come to the area
SK hynix originally planned to put this chip manufacturing facility on land — called Site A — bordered on the east by Tippecanoe County Road North 100 West/Yeager Road
the company wants to use a piece of land — called Site B –across Yeager Road because it is larger and has better road access to minimize traffic
That piece of land is bordered on the west by North 100 West/Yeager Road
The southern border will be just north of West Lafayette Fire Station No
NK Kim is a senior vice president and the head of the Neuron Project Management Office at SK hynix West Lafayette
“Site B is the ultimate choice to locate our fab most effectively,” Kim said during the presentation
we will listen to the voice of the community and if necessary we might go to Site A if the community so wish.”
Community members pushed back on moving the site across the street to Site B because two sides border homes
There are homes on part of one side of Site A
The plant will bring skilled jobs to central Indiana
“SK hynix plans to employ 1,000 direct hires
and this will range from engineers to technicians,” Kim told News 8 through a translator
Once the company knows which site that it will build on
it plans to build the facility quickly to allow for production to start
“SK hynix’s rule is to begin mass production by the second half of 2028,” Kim said
Company representatives reassured concerns about water contamination by explaining how water is filtered after use
They also told residents that endangered species in South Korea flourished in the area near their semiconductor plant

— The fate of SK Hynix's $3.87 billion microchip manufacturing plant location rests in the hands of Monday's city council vote
The South Korea chip manufacturing company wants to change sites in West Lafayette
The council will vote Monday night whether to approve the rezoning that would allow that
the plan was to build the factory at Yeager Road about a quarter of a mile north of Kalberer Road
Then the city and SK Hynix floated the idea of building at the northwest corner of Salisbury Street and Kalberer Road
Site B generated backlash from residents who live in University Farms
a housing addition on the southeast corner of Salisbury Street and Kalberer Road
Monday in the council chambers inside city hall
City officials anticipate a large turnout of residents who want to voice their opinions over the semiconductor microchip plant
Because of the need to have access to the city's technology for the meeting
To help accommodate all those planning to attend
the council chambers occupancy is restricted to 120 people
Seats will be reserved for those presenting items on the agenda
The city hall has up to three overflow rooms available to residents if the council chambers fills up
Assisted listening devices will be available in the council chambers and the Bean Room
Those needing assisted listening devices are encouraged to arrive early for seating in either the council chambers or the Bean Room
Those who are disabled and require accommodations should contact the mayor's office at 765-775-5102
"Everyone who wishes to speak will have the opportunity to do so," the city's news release states
Those who want to address the council must sign in on a speaker sheet
which will be available in the council chambers and each overflow room
Each speaker will have three minutes to address the council
If the speaker is summoned from an overflow room
he or she must leave the council's chambers after making his or her remarks so the council complies with occupancy limits
There will be no electronic commenting during this meeting
comments and questions may be submitted before the meeting to clerk@westlafayette.in.gov
You can watch the council meeting online on the city's website
followed by clicking on the office of the clerk tab
There will be a video link to the May 5 meeting

Today, April 25, Indiana Republicans passed the final version of House Bill 1001
sending the budget to the governor’s desk. State Rep
Chris Campbell (D-West Lafayette) voted against the budget due to insufficient funding for K-12 public education
changes to the eligibility threshold for On My Way Pre-K
cuts in housing assistance and the elimination of funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) TV and radio
Campbell supports a few portions of the budget
including cutting funding for the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) by roughly 30%.
Campbell released the following statement:
which will adversely impact families in West Lafayette
and they’re receiving no funding for capital projects
even though they’ve been an excellent partner with the state
the university needs additional funding to build dorms and meet students’ needs.
“Our public schools also get the short end of the stick
They’ll get a small increase in state funding
they’ll lose an even bigger amount in property tax revenue
This isn’t what our children and teachers deserve
The bad in the budget outweighs the good.”

LAFAYETTE ― First baseman Bree Johnson recalled the first time she met her future assistant coach and mentor Annie Dooley as a 6-year-old
beginning her introduction into competitive sports
a former West Lafayette softball player herself
put the aluminum t-ball bat in Johnson's hands and began swinging away
not realizing where the friendship would take either player or coach
Johnson had Dooley by her side as she broke the West Lafayette RBIs school record Thursday
The previous record of 105 was set by her close friend Adrianne Tolen
open up and have fun," said Johnson of Dooley

Johnson has had Dooley there through her milestone achievements in soccer and softball
Johnson broke an orbital bone in her face during her sophomore year playing soccer and wore a protective mask during basketball season
The record of 106 RBIs and counting is a byproduct of that
she has been the masked marauder across all the sports," Dooley said
"She's one of the best hitters that's come through this program
The fact that it's her best friend and mentor ahead of her makes it even cooler that that's how the torch passes."

— The Greater Lafayette Commerce announced its support for the $4 billion SK hynix investment in West Lafayette on Thursday
less than a week from a proposed land rezone for the company heading to West Lafayette City Council
first announced its plans in April 2024 to build a semiconductor fabrication plant
on land owned by the Purdue Research Foundation in West Lafayette
SK hynix officials expressed interest in a nearby site at the corner of Salisbury Street and Kalberer Road
GLC and its board of directors said Thursday in a news release that the project
bolster local industry and position Greater Lafayette as a key hub in the U.S
was one it supports in light of recent community dialogue
in collaboration with the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette
played an instrumental role in attracting SK hynix to West Lafayette through its corporate attraction efforts," the release said
"The site will house an advanced semiconductor production line dedicated to next generation High Bandwidth Memory chips
the highest-performing DRAM technology available
outgoing chair of GLC's board of directors
said in the release a project of this scale naturally raises questions
but it also signals something significant: Greater Lafayette is at the epicenter of a semiconductor sector poised for exponential growth
“What we’re seeing today with SK hynix is a rare opportunity,” Hazaray said in the release
"This investment lays the foundation to further modernize our regional economy — one that’s globally connected and locally rooted.”
The West Lafayette facility will contribute to the formation of the "Silicon Heartland," the release said
part of a broader national shift expanding semiconductor production beyond Silicon Valley to regions like Arizona’s “Silicon Desert,” Texas
"As the country's seventh semiconductor hub
this development represents a pivotal moment that is expected to spark further investment and strengthen the region’s economy
workforce and innovation ecosystem for years to come," the release said
"The semiconductor industry offers a broad spectrum of career opportunities — including stable
family-sustaining employment for individuals with or without a college degree
the region has allocated $5 million in state Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative funds to create a talent pipeline for high school students
technicians and engineers in training," the release said
"Purdue University and Ivy Tech Community College are collaborating on semiconductor programs to support this critical workforce development."
said the investment by SK hynix directly aligns with Greater Lafayette Commerce’s mission to advance economic and community prosperity for a superior quality of life
ethically responsible industry leaders like SK hynix
West Lafayette and the region is not only diversifying and strengthening its economic landscape
but also creating meaningful opportunities for residents
students and businesses alike," Hamilton said
A third SK hynix info session will be on Saturday at West Lafayette City Hall
Taking place in council chambers with overflow room reserved in the Bean Room
the community meeting will kick off at 9 a.m
with a poster session and informational displays
followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with SK hynix officials at 10 a.m
Seating for the public info session is limited to 150 between the two rooms inside city hall
"PRF explored several larger venues in the West Lafayette community," the announcement said
a larger space could not be secured for this final session due to prom season
school concerts and limited facility availability."
— Just a month shy of its ribbon-cutting ceremony
landscapers were in the process of putting 30,000 plugs into the ground and planting 3,000 trees during one of the first hot days of spring recently as the finishing touches to the new park set to open on May 22
Lozano showed the Journal & Courier everything Cason Park will offer
the option to rent kayaks and canoes to take on the pond and the ability to fish
Landscapers created a small pond for the Cason Park grounds
Visitors will be able to rent kayaks and canoes to take out onto the lake
Lozano said they don’t have a rental price point just yet
but she said the price would be “very minimal.” Visitors will not be able to take their own boats onto the pond
Kayaks or canoes can be rented from the boathouse
where Lozano said they’ll be greeted by a staff member who will help get it onto the water
The boat house will have six kayaks and six canoes on standby
She said the foundation has not decided how many boats will fit on the water at one time
All boats will come with life jackets that visitors are encouraged to wear
but those younger than 13 will be forced to wear them because of state law
The pond will also be host to more than just boats
Visitors will be able to fish on the pier near the entrance of the park
and operated for about 40 years as one of 100 regional schoolhouses
Lynn Cason eventually donated the land the building sat on to Franciscan Health
but the building was relocated to where it sits today
‘We need to save that schoolhouse or they’re gonna tear it down,’” Lozano said
The Lafayette community raised $80,000 to relocate and refurbish the building
Cason Park’s May opening will open the schoolhouse doors to the public once again
“I hope that school groups will be able to come … and study what it was like to be in a one-room schoolhouse
learn about that and then play on the playground equipment,” she said
Cason Park has four playgrounds placed throughout the park
each tailored for kids of a variety of ages
Perhaps the most visually interesting of the sets are the two large owls overlooking the entirety of the park
Doubling as an art piece and playset for kids to climb
the owls were created and imported by Czech Republic manufacturer “Kompan.”
Lozano said the sets were chosen for a reason much closer to home
“We could have gotten wolves or caterpillars or other structures," she said
"but we kind of chose the owls because of the Celery Bog owls.”
according to a social media post by the Parks and Recreation Foundation
The post said the owls are mother and daughter
Though the Celery Bog isn’t connected to Cason Park
Lozano said to expect to hear about a trail connecting the two in the future
“Once we get the trail between the Celery Bog in here
we think that we can marry the two as a field trip,” she said
“Do a nature activity over there and then walk them over here
ideal for older kids and chock full of jungle gyms
A stone staircase leads up a hill to the playground
a hill that Lozano said will double as a place to sled in the winter
include what Lozano called a “mushroom hut” in the forest and another with large
green metal stalks with stained glass atop it
Near those playgrounds is a small concert venue with a large knoll for an audience
essentially roofed structures with benches underneath
are throughout the park and available for groups to rent

— A little red Corvette outran the police cars
but it couldn't outrun helpful bystanders who pointed deputies in the direction of the fleeing sports car
A deputy noticed the distinctive red Corvette eastbound on Sagamore Parkway about 6:50 p.m
The car appeared to be trying to race other cars and was driving recklessly
The driver of the Corvette made a U-turn and headed back toward West Lafayette when the deputy tried to stop the driver
The Corvette turned north onto Salisbury Street
which was the last the deputy saw of the car
indicating the car turned towards Soldiers Home Road
where other Good Samaritans pointed for the deputy to go north
people pointed which direction the Corvette went right up to Winding Creek neighborhood
