Here is what the On3 Georgia writer told me about Marques Easley: “He’s a massive athlete A lot like (Nitro) Tuggle in that he’s talented but the off the field stuff came out of left field He should be a Day One starter and be an all-conference-type player at some point.” Top 101Field of 64 projectionPredicting College Baseball Tourney Hot4Trump By clicking "Subscribe to Newsletter", I agree to On3's Privacy Notice, Terms and use of my personal information described therein I am bit more optimistic with some of these spring portal additions And the schedule is unforgiving for a second season in a row Q: Which incoming transfer from the last week do you think will have the biggest impact next season? -JTBoiler11A: Tuggle is the obvious choice just because of his skill-set/talent and the yawning needs for help at wideout. Hot4Trump, Saban blastedNIL order ripped On3 is a registered trademark of On3 Media This story has been updated to add information — Purdue Research Foundation CEO Chad Pittman also a colonel in the Indiana Army National Guard received a written reprimand last year for his behavior while deployed to Taiwan The investigator into allegations of misconduct while in Taiwan also recommended in a report that Pittman be removed from command in Taiwan Army officials substantiated the investigation while not providing details Pittman generally denied the allegations and said in a statement "I was never asked to depart Taiwan by Taiwanese officials." Nowhere in the investigation memo or the reprimand memo does it indicate that Taiwanese officials asked Pittman to leave their country "My relationship with Taiwan leaders at the highest levels of government and the friends I have made on the island is steadfast." "You are hereby reprimanded for violating a punitive provision of United States Army Pacific .. during a dinner with senior leaders of Taiwan's military you failed to consume alcohol in moderation You drank so much alcohol that you vomited on yourself and had to be removed from dinner by your subordinates at the request of a senior foreign military partner." director of Indiana Army National Guard Strategic Communication and Public Affairs said the investigation and its outcome are confidential obtained a copy of the investigation memorandum and the memorandum of reprimand Pittman was previously assigned to the Indo-Pacific Area of Responsibility but we don’t discuss further details of individual duties," Col The matter was referred to the Indiana Army National Guard.” "appears to be part of a leaked early-stage confidential memorandum that does not reflect the full context or final outcome." Pittman emailed a prepared statement through his public relations firm Thursday in response to the Journal & Courier's requests from comment The investigation memorandum was prepared and presented to Bartholomees for his consideration on Sept "I was exonerated of claims that were made by disgruntled subordinates." Bartholomees' memorandum indicated that Pittman was reprimanded The reprimand document states it is an administrative measure not a punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice The investigator's memorandum states: "Blaming others shifting blame or actively criticizing others for mistakes behind their backs seem to be a recurring theme within the (Reserved Capability Advisory Team) most of the interviews demonstrate that Col was an active participant or allowed for others to do the same in his presence." Pittman's written comments included an explanation for the allegations I had a member of my team who was upset that I empowered two junior team members who were more capable to run the operation I still stand behind that decision and believe it was the right move." The two subordinates likely are a captain and a major who other team members believed were Pittman's favorites found that the major made statements that were inconsistent with other evidence is described in the report as Pittman's drinking buddy These three officers did not tell the investigator anything negative about Pittman which is contrasted by many other soldiers — enlisted and officers — who were very direct about what they directly saw and heard from Pittman "I am a patriot and laser focused on advancing innovation in our state because that is what America needs from me," Pittman said The investigation memo also stated that Pittman treated military personnel with dignity and respect but it also found that Pittman demonstrated destructive leadership behavior It said: "Pittman demonstrated self-serving behavior placing his own work and accomplishments ahead of the others' and the mission displaying narcissistic tendencies and exhibiting a sense of entitlement "He also demonstrated leadership incompetence behaviors such as unengaging leadership Pittman was accused of making self-aggrandizing claims Lapthe Flora's investigation of his actions Flora retired before the investigation was completed the Journal & Courier asked Pittman to discuss the nature of Flora's investigation and his alleged leadership incompetence and poor judgment “I have been advised to direct all questions related to my military service to the Indiana National Guard,” he said Although the investigation memo cites several of Pittman's behavior and leadership shortcomings that other soldiers substantiated Pittman was reprimanded only for becoming drunk at a Chinese New Year party in February 2024 "The incident in which I was intoxicated was at a Lunar New Year partner event and I self-reported the following day to my superior officers that I was overserved that night," Pittman said in his written comment distributed by Bose Public Affairs Group "I received the appropriate performance-based counseling and assured that this behavior would not be repeated." I expect your behavior to be beyond reproach," Bartholomees wrote in the reprimand "The United States Army trusted you to behave responsibly in executing a sensitive mission in a forward-deployed overseas area of operations with important foreign partners "You failed to comport yourself as a senior leader," the major general wrote of Pittman's drunkenness "There is absolutely no excuse for your absence of professionalism This misconduct demonstrates your poor judgment and lack of maturity You have set a terrible example for your subordinates and foreign partners." found that a lieutenant colonel saw Pittman vomit on his shirt during dinner at a Chinese New Year celebration A warrant officer told Perez-Marsden: "I noticed Col Pittman was heavily slurring his words while trying to give little speeches and there was food falling out of fall his mouth while he was trying to eat." The warrant officer told the Army's investigator that a Taiwanese colonel asked him to remove Pittman from the dinner The Taiwanese colonel pointed the warrant officer to look at a Taiwanese two-star general's face which showed disapproval at Pittman's actions A master sergeant and the warrant officer took Pittman to his hotel room In the company of Taiwanese women?Pittman's behavior raised security concerns Five other officers noted that Pittman had relationships with Taiwanese women "Pittman was unprofessional when he brought two young Taiwanese females to a going-away dinner," the investigative memo states citing a warrant officer's comments to the investigators Pittman described one of the women as a translator The woman who was Pittman's translator and "language tutor" told a U.S warrant officer that she randomly met Pittman at a "tourists' location and became his tutor." The warrant officer told investigators that he believed the woman was acting as his secretary making bookings for him and translating for Pittman and his family when he met with business partners who visited Taiwan The warrant officer described the other woman who frequently was in Pittman's company "as a 20-year-old sophomore from National Taiwan University" who met Pittman at a popular expat bar in Taipei Pittman admitted the relationship with "Renee," his Chinese language tutor who Pittman said became a family friend Pittman said he believed he reported his tutor through the field service office as a foreign contact who then reported it to the Defense Information System for Security "No one informed him that he was not authorized to socialize or learn Chinese from a foreign national," the investigator's memo states citing Pittman's response to the investigator's questions Pittman's responded to the Journal & Courier about those allegations saying they were baseless and unsubstantiated by the U.S Allegation of working for PRF while posted in TaiwanThree months after the reprimand promoted Pittman from the foundation's vice president to its CEO The first month that Pittman took over as CEO of the foundation, it announced a strategic partnership with Taiwan Although Pittman wasn't reprimanded for it several of his subordinates in Taiwan reported to the investigator that Pittman frequently visited different universities on the island "We often wondered if he was doing his civilian work while he was here since he works for a college back in the U.S and has Taiwanese companies as his clients," one subordinate told the investigators Pittman's subordinates said these meetings were unrelated to the Army unit's mission Pittman said these were baseless claims and unsubstantiated Pittman currently is assigned as the 54th Security Force assistance brigade commander director of strategic communications and public affairs officer for the 219th Engineer Brigade I was selected for command through a national-level board by people who had full knowledge of the investigation and the findings and my senior rater assessed me as the top colonel under his rating citing my impact on national security and regional stability," Pittman said "I remain honored to serve in my 24th year in the Indiana Army National Guard." Shondell said Purdue was quick to land former Notre Dame and USC standout Lindsey Miller Then came commitments from outside hitters Akasha Anderson (Auburn The Boilers rounded out their time in the portal with pledges from middle blockers Dior Charles (Wake Forest) and Bianka Lulic (Miami) Shondell's attitude completely changed "What was kind of the saving grace for me what lifted me back up was that everyone I talked to from the portal was excited about Purdue," he said "Their impression of Purdue volleyball and the university was extremely positive 'Why did so-and-so leave?' They didn't care They just knew there was a spot here." Purdue has staked its claim as one of the top programs in the Big Ten under Shondell's guidance The Boilermakers have won 21 matches or more in seven of the last eight seasons with the lone outlier being the 2020 COVID-19-shortened campaign Purdue's Holloway Gymnasium sold out every home match posting conference attendance records of 14,876 in matches against Indiana and Wisconsin Purdue's status in college volleyball has risen to the top resources and support has reached new heights exploding in popularity and establishing a standard for success When the offseason resembled a revolving door of departures "The first thing you're thinking is 'How is this going to look to the outside world What are people going to think is going on at Purdue Why would those players (enter the transfer portal)?' he said you really have to start evaluating what happened more communication with them — there's always that After watching what has transpired across the country the last six months you realize it's going to happen to everybody you're not going to learn and get better I did take it personal — not that I was angry with those players and while Shondell had some internal battles regarding the culture in West Lafayette many in the transfer portal considered Purdue one of the top destinations in the sport that only one needed to visit campus before committing Charles was the only one who put boots to pavement in West Lafayette The others were quick to grab their tickets to play for one of the Big Ten's best programs That helped Shondell hit the reset button heading into a new year "For those players to commit to us within two days certainly changed my attitude and my mentality about where we were," he said and was just really blessed and fortunate that it happened that way." grass began showing signs of green life and the 14,000 trees across the Purdue campus started to bloom A new season in West Lafayette meant the doors to Holloway Gymnasium were about to crack open On the 2025 spring roster is a 50/50 mix of returning talent and new players Eight players from the 2024 squad are back including key contributors Kenna Wollard (outside hitter) Ryan McAleer (defensive specialist) and Taylor Anderson (setter) The other seven are newcomers — five transfers and two freshmen When those transfer players — Lindsey Miller Nataly Moravec and Dior Charles — finally stepped on Purdue's campus their eyes were opened to a new world of college volleyball "It's amazing when you get these players who come in from other schools they can't believe what a great situation we have at Purdue," Shondell said "They're blown away by the support we have here all the people we have around — it's just been neat to hear them say those things." With elite resources comes high expectations There was no time to stand around wide-eyed and gawk at what Purdue had to offer It was time to get to work in West Lafayette and begin the process of building a championship-caliber team was ready to get back to offseason training "Getting those players committed certainly raised our enthusiasm but now you've got to find a way to help them compete in the best conference in the country," he said "We knew we had certain things to improve on in this situation." Top priorities for the Boilermakers during the offseason included improving on first-ball contact and power hitting Purdue did lose two of the hardest-hitting players in the Big Ten with Hudson heading to Kentucky and Chicoine committing to Louisville Serve-receive issues proved to be costly in Purdue's seven losses in the 2024 campaign Correcting that was a major focus during those training sessions it's going to be awfully difficult to win matches Improvement on the court is only half the battle in a team sport With a roster featuring a healthy mix of returners and newcomers getting acquainted with new teammates is just as important "We've set up some things this semester to pull this team together we have eight players who return and seven newcomers That allowed us to set up a 'buddy system,' Shondell said they go out and do something fun with one of their new teammates — whether that be going to make candles Woven into Purdue's spring season was a schedule with five matches which tested Purdue's blend of on-court training and team chemistry The Boilers hosted three matches at Holloway Gymnasium Miami (Ohio) and Loyola Chicago in late March and early April Purdue traveled to Fishers (Ind.) to play Vanderbilt at a neutral-site location and closed out the spring schedule with a trip to Muncie for a match against Ball State It's important not to slip into the habit of reading too much into spring exhibitions — there are too many variables to consider But Purdue's success in those five matches — especially with McAleer Charles and Anderson sidelined due to injury — serves as a sign that through the avalanche of bad news from the winter the Boilermakers can dig themselves out and remain near the top of the Big Ten December was one of the most difficult months Shondell has endured in more than 20 years at Purdue he questioned whether or not he should return as the leader of the program It didn't take him long to nix the thought of leaving Purdue took a chance on Shondell back in February 2003 hiring him away from Muncie Central High School He wasn't about to bail on the school during one of the program's toughest moments "I decided I needed to come back and make this thing work for two reasons: (Former athletic director) Morgan Burke hired me out of high school — I was a high school coach my family's life in such a positive way "I also owed it to these kids who wanted to come back and play and these freshmen who were coming in and committed their college lives to Purdue Shondell wants to win a lot more volleyball matches while he's at Purdue and he's hopeful that this year's team will continue to keep the Boilermakers near the top of the Big Ten standings But what brings him the most excitement about this next chapter is the opportunity to coach a hard-working They knew that we had hit a low level and everyone was here to make it better," he said BIG TEN VOLLEYBALL MEDIA DAYS: Dates have been announced for 2025 Big Ten Volleyball Media Days. ceremony landscapers were in the process of putting 30,000 plugs into the ground and planting 3,000 trees during one of the first hot days of spring recently as the finishing touches to the new park set to open on May 22 Lozano showed the Journal & Courier everything Cason Park will offer the option to rent kayaks and canoes to take on the pond and the ability to fish Landscapers created a small pond for the Cason Park grounds Visitors will be able to rent kayaks and canoes to take out onto the lake Lozano said they don’t have a rental price point just yet but she said the price would be “very minimal.” Visitors will not be able to take their own boats onto the pond Kayaks or canoes can be rented from the boathouse where Lozano said they’ll be greeted by a staff member who will help get it onto the water The boat house will have six kayaks and six canoes on standby She said the foundation has not decided how many boats will fit on the water at one time All boats will come with life jackets that visitors are encouraged to wear but those younger than 13 will be forced to wear them because of state law The pond will also be host to more than just boats Visitors will be able to fish on the pier near the entrance of the park and operated for about 40 years as one of 100 regional schoolhouses Lynn Cason eventually donated the land the building sat on to Franciscan Health but the building was relocated to where it sits today ‘We need to save that schoolhouse or they’re gonna tear it down,’” Lozano said The Lafayette community raised $80,000 to relocate and refurbish the building Cason Park’s May opening will open the schoolhouse doors to the public once again “I hope that school groups will be able to come … and study what it was like to be in a one-room schoolhouse learn about that and then play on the playground equipment,” she said Cason Park has four playgrounds placed throughout the park each tailored for kids of a variety of ages Perhaps the most visually interesting of the sets are the two large owls overlooking the entirety of the park Doubling as an art piece and playset for kids to climb the owls were created and imported by Czech Republic manufacturer “Kompan.” Lozano said the sets were chosen for a reason much closer to home “We could have gotten wolves or caterpillars or other structures," she said "but we kind of chose the owls because of the Celery Bog owls.” according to a social media post by the Parks and Recreation Foundation The post said the owls are mother and daughter Though the Celery Bog isn’t connected to Cason Park Lozano said to expect to hear about a trail connecting the two in the future “Once we get the trail between the Celery Bog in here we think that we can marry the two as a field trip,” she said “Do a nature activity over there and then walk them over here ideal for older kids and chock full of jungle gyms A stone staircase leads up a hill to the playground a hill that Lozano said will double as a place to sled in the winter include what Lozano called a “mushroom hut” in the forest and another with large green metal stalks with stained glass atop it Near those playgrounds is a small concert venue with a large knoll for an audience essentially roofed structures with benches underneath are throughout the park and available for groups to rent LAFAYETTE ― The IHSAA sectional baseball
