WEST UNION — Becoming the third Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustang senior this season to achieve the feat
Addison West scored her 1,000th career point in Thursday night at West Union
Going into the Southern Hills Athletic Conference game
West needed just six points to achieve the milestone feat
joining teammates Jade Massey and Macy Etienne
as they were the other two seniors to score their 1,000th point this season for LCHS
“It was just unbelievable,” West told The Highland County Press after the game
I wasn't even sure at the beginning of this year if I’d get it
Etienne scored first for the Lady Mustangs with a two-point basket with the assist from Massey
West scored her fourth point of the game with points in the paint for a 4-0 LCHS lead with 6:40 left in the first quarter
Massey made two free throws at the 4:58 mark
Then came the moment many were waiting for

putting LCHS ahead 11-2 with 4:01 on the clock
totaling seven two-point baskets and one 3-pointer
“Addie’s been in our program for four years,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Whitney Lewis said
“This is a milestone that I'm super happy for her
and I'm glad to see her get recognized for all her effort and hard work.”
LCHS added to their lead with a put-back basket by Massey
and West sank a jumper for a 15-2 Lady Mustang lead with 2:32 left in the quarter
WUHS ended the quarter with two made free throws
putting the first-quarter score at 17-4 when the frame ended

(WSET) — It's been weeks since students and staff at T.C
Miller Elementary School experienced a regular day since the school's building was forced to temporarily close in December for repairs
But Friday life should go back to normal as the school resumes operation in its own building again
Miller was housed in-person at West Lynchburg Baptist Church where students attended class
“We are so thankful to West Lynchburg Baptist Church for hosting us over the last few weeks," T.C
Water damage had originally caused the closure and it took several weeks for Lynchburg City Schools crews to get the issues resolved.
WLBC has been partnered with LCS through the Partners in Education program for 12 years which was the pathway to opening its doors for T.C. Miller.
“Thank you to everyone for your support during this time!” Guerin said.

'Operation Shockwave': 47 charged
48,000 fentanyl pills seized in Lynchburg drug bustby Robert Locklear & Rachel Tillapaugh
(WSET) — A massive drug bust in Lynchburg has resulted in 47 people facing charges
the seizure of dozens of guns and enough drugs to kill over 200,000 people
The Lynchburg Police Department said "Operation Shockwave" has been in the works since March 2023
when they worked together with a number of law enforcement agencies for the operations
"This operation was a proactive initiative to reduce violent crime and combat prolific offenders driving crime within our community through narcotics distribution
Police said the combined efforts of all the involved law enforcement led to the uncovering of a large-scale undercover operation
LPD said they helped conduct undercover operations into drug and gun purchases
andinterdictions of drug and gun suppliers and couriers
Their effort helped bring to light an enormous amount of illegal drugs and dozens of guns
"Operation Shockwave led to the combined seizure of 4.9 kilograms of fentanyl
The street value of those narcotics well exceeds $1.6 million
and the fentanyl alone could kill over 200,000 people
Mike Pflieger is the Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Lynchburg
Pflieger said this operation took over a year to complete
"The operation began in March of 2023
it's been going on now for approximately one year," Pflieger said
He also said this was a good initiative to stop criminals in Lynchburg and surrounding areas
"As you know drugs are an ongoing problem in Lynchburg
we've specifically seen a rise in deadly drugs including fentanyl
this was an opportunity number one to get some of the major dealers off the street and to also remove some of the narcotics themselves as well as the money that is driving this criminal activity from the street," Pflieger said
Pflieger hopes this type of large-scale operation will stop other criminals
"When you get these people off the street
there are others that are engaging in similar activity but hopefully
this type of large-scale operation is a deterrent to that," Pflieger said
Dozens of people are facing charges related to Operation Shockwave
police said; a total of 47 are being prosecuted
LPD said an additional 9 people have been charged with federal crimes that include drug distribution
use of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense
and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances
Chief Ryan Zuidema of the Lynchburg Police Department said the way his department handled the operation was indicative of their purpose
"Operation Shockwave was a resounding success
showcasing the unwavering dedication of our local
and federal law enforcement personnel who partnered to address criminal behavior that threatened the well-being of our community," Zuidema said
"We will continue to relentlessly pursue those who put the peace and security of our city at risk.”
These are the law enforcement agencies and other departments who assisted with Operation Shockwave
The regular-season and Southern Hills Athletic Conference finale for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs was a “perfect afternoon” for pitcher Cole Wells
as the hurler pitched a perfect game Monday against the West Union Dragons
The SHAC win by the Mustangs — and ensuing perfect game — by Wells at WUHS saw LCHS win by a 12-0 score in five innings
not a single baseball left the infield in the perfect effort
Wells had the aforementioned 12 strikeouts (11 swinging strikeouts)
a groundout to second base and a groundout back to the pitcher
Wells struck out the side in the third and fifth innings
and the second out of the inning was a pop up to second base
which bookended a groundout to second base
The third inning saw three straight strikeouts
followed by two strikeouts and a ball hit back to the pitcher for the three outs for the fourth inning
Wells had the first two outs recorded with swinging third strikes
and he finished the effort with a called third strike
the Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the first
another one-run inning in the fourth and a three-run fifth inning
Josiah Burns finished 2-for-3 with two runs
Braedon West finished 1-for-3 with three runs
Cody Bell ended the day 1-for-4 with a run
Christian Flowers went 1-for-2 with a double
Isaac Eyre finished 1-for-2 with a run and a walk
and teammate Asher Faust scored a run and drew a walk in the SHAC win
LC’s win moves them to 6-7 in the SHAC and 9-13 overall this season
The Southeast District Coaches Association this week announced the 2023 All-District girls soccer teams
with Highland County having 20 players selected as well as the Player of the Year
Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year for Division III
Lynchburg-Clay senior Jade Massey was named the Division III Player of the Year for the 2023 season

the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs just couldn’t get over the hump so to speak against the Western Brown Lady Broncos
“The overall picture of this game is we just fought the whole entire time
through mistakes and good bad and ugly on our part
on their part,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Whitney Lewis said after the game
Western Brown is a really good basketball team
and we put in a valiant effort and almost came up on top.”
The Lady Mustangs (9-4) held the lead just once in the game
that coming in the first quarter following two free throws by senior Addison West with 1:52 on the clock
LCHS held the lead for 17 seconds until Western Brown ended the frame with five straight points for an 18-13 lead after the first frame
That first quarter for LCHS included five points from Macy Etienne

the Lady Mustangs had points from West and Massey
as each player scored four points off their baskets
leaving LCHS trailing by seven points at halftime
LCHS finished the first half with 12 turnovers
“We try to keep 12 turnovers for the game as a goal
and when you play a team like Western Brown
you’ve got to make sure that you take advantage of each and every possession,” Lewis said
Western Brown extended their lead to as many as 12 points on two occasions in the third frame both times off 3-pointers which were made by Fischer and Jones
as Jones made the WBHS lead 42-30 with 4:25 left in the quarter
LCHS came back and showed they weren’t folding
scoring the next six points from the 4:15 mark to the 2:29 mark off a layup by Massey
a jumper from Allie Waits and a basket with an underhand shot by West with 2:29 left for a six-point deficit at 42-36

as the third frame ended with LCHS having 46 points compared to Western Brown with 49 points
“We hit some big shots at big key moments to keep us in the game and there at the end almost pulled it out,” Lewis said
“I think we just played really hard tonight and never quit
I think we were down double digits at some point
and that's a good place to be this time of year
In the fourth frame LCHS trailed by as many as 11 points with 6:27 on the clock following a 3-pointer by Fischer of WBHS
and later by 10 points with 3:23 left in the game for a 60-50 deficit

LCHS continued with two free throws made by Massey
it was a 3-pointer by Waits with 39.9 left in regulation that had the Lady Mustangs trailing by one point at 61-60
Allie Waits came out and played really well,” Lewis said
gave us some good minutes there in the first half and the second half
I think she had three steals in a row at one point in time there in that fourth quarter that just
keeps us in the game and keeps us competitive.”
Western Brown scored the next four points in the game

Have you even heard of such a thing? Prior to visiting the Lynchburg Hillcats last month
my answer to both questions was "no." However
the Hillcats are doing their part to raise the prominence of this regional specialty
Both of these Virginia-based restaurants were founded by a man named Nick Bullington in the 1930s. As of this season
the Cheesy Western is also sold at the Hillcats' home of Lynchburg City Stadium.
Tweet from @Brandiose: The Texas Inn in Lynchburg, Virginia is no joke! 🍔 They serve up a mean Cheesy Western at the counter. A counter of only like 10 seats! Were talking a cheeseburger topped with a fried egg, relish and pickles. 🤫 A little secret: you get onion if you ask for it "with"! pic.twitter.com/90x5eEtBUnI cannot eat Cheesy Westerns
