ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A 23-year-old Pensacola woman was sentenced to over 20 years in state prison for a fatal DUI wreck in Escambia County in December 2023
Circuit Judge Amy Broderson sentenced Jasmine West last Thursday to over 20 years in state prison for:
"Consistent with Florida’s DUI statutes
West will serve four years of the sentence day-for-day and she will have a lifetime driver’s license suspension," the State Attorney's Office says
The wreck took place the afternoon of December 30, 2023.
West was traveling on North Davis Highway when she drove across two lanes into oncoming traffic -- colliding head-on with an SUV that was occupied by a family of four
The crash killed the 45-year-old Pace man driving the SUV
His wife -- a 43-year-old Pace woman -- survived critical injuries
while their daughters (ages 14 and 12) survived minor injuries
"Forensic analysis conducted by the Florida Highway Patrol found that West’s vehicle was traveling at more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit when the crash occurred," the State Attorney's Office says
"...An analysis of West’s blood showed her alcohol level to be almost twice the legal limit."
West did not have a valid license at the time of the crash
Her callous actions ended one life and forever harmed three others
A lengthy prison sentence is absolutely appropriate," prosecuting attorney Christopher Patterson said
West suffered critical injuries in the crash as well
Once FHP's crash investigation wrapped up
the agency secured a warrant for West for DUI manslaughter
troopers could not locate her in the area -- eventually discovering that she fled to Miami
US Marshals located West in Miami in May before she was extradited back to Escambia County

The study found that crimes reported in the 32304 zip code increased 33% from 2019 to 2023
some board members expressed concern that the West Pensacola Sector Plan
Area leaders say homelessness is also a contributing factor
Leon County Commissioner Christian Caban said adjacent areas are experiencing growth and investment while West Pensacola Street has largely been excluded
County staff said West Pensacola has grown slightly since 2005
with 300 housing units and a newer strip mall built
and the first step towards improvement will be to update the plan
“They live with these issues every single day
And I think that that’s why we need to make this a priority
I think that’s why we need a new action plan for this corridor
and I think that’s why we need to make it a priority today,” Caban said
said they’ve centralized services to help people in need
Some have described that as making West Pensacola a “magnet” for homelessness
She said while people may be loitering around the area
those wanting to see the actual impact of the center can volunteer
“Positivity breeds positivity and pushes people to do a little bit more and to utilize the services
So it’s not everybody just hanging around and not doing what they’re supposed to do,” Wilson said
She agrees services have been put largely into one place
She said the center has more than 40 providers ranging from mental health services to legal aid
Rather than just slot clients into the first available bed
Wilson said they try to build up the “whole person” so that they’re actually ready for stable housing
we do have some people that are on the streets that refuse to come in because dorm style living is not for everyone,” Wilson said
“And a lot of people have lived off the grid and coming in here to a structured environment [isn’t what they want]
Wilson said the Kearney Center trespasses clients if they use drugs
“So Kearney can’t be held accountable for people that are choosing a different lifestyle right now
the first step will be updating the plan for the first time in two decades
I would not drive on Pensacola Street at certain times of day and night
he argues he’s seen the problems up close and personal
because in my opinion of where it’s located
we’re just kicking the can down the road and it’s not right,” Caban said
“And I think we as elected leaders and local leaders should be prioritizing what’s right.”
Caban said he’ll discuss the plan at the next county commission workshop
He said the majority of commissioners also passed such a motion requiring staff to come back with action items for the board to consider
county staff pointed out that the road itself is the jurisdiction of the state
while the area is largely inside the City of Tallahassee limits
That quagmire makes it difficult for any one agency to fix the problem overnight
though the city and Leon County host a joint planning department
On top of the 300 housing units and strip mall
county staff wrote than more than 1,000 zoning changes have been approved in the area
and physical resurfacing of the road was in the Florida Department of Transportation Fiscal Year 2025 budget

A man was injured in a Thursday night shooting
The shots were fired near a residence in the 2400 block of West Pensacola Street
but the victim walked into ASAP Smoke Shop on West Pensacola Street with non-life-threatening injuries to notify police about the shooting
a Tallahassee Police Department spokesperson said
The victim was "uncooperative" and didn't offer any information on the circumstances leading to the shooting
there are no suspects and the case is still an open and active investigation
This incident is at least the 66th serious shooting in the capital city and county this year. So far in 2024, 26 people have died and at least 51 people have been injured, according to a Tallahassee Democrat analysis of gun violence. While overall reports of violent crime are trending down
this year's shooting deaths have eclipsed last year's total of 24

The suspect left the scene before law enforcement arrived
If you're travelling around West Pensacola Friday morning
you may be wondering where all that smoke is coming from
Don't worry, though. It's not a house fire or out of control wildfire — it's just a prescribed burn.
Wildlife mitigation specialist for the Blackwater Forestry Center Joe Zwierzchowski told the News Journal there is a 118-acre controlled burn near Lillian Highway
Prescribed burns: How controlled burns help Florida Forest Service fire crews save neighborhoods
"We are in the peak of our prescribed fire season around here," Zwierzchowski said
smoke around this time of year is not uncommon."
Zwierzchowski said prescribed burns are the "most effective and efficient" way to manage forests to prevent widescale forest fires
is a pre-planned fire used to prevent tree overcrowding and manage flammable fuels naturally built up over time by forests
prescribed fires are meant to reduce hazardous fuels
minimize the spread of pest insects and disease
provide forage for game and recycle nutrients back into the soil
prescribed fires are safe when the management prescription activity is carefully planned and followed during the fire
The fire is implemented by "highly trained professionals" and are only planned during "optimal conditions."
Once the prescribed fire objective has been reached
Crews carefully "mop up or extinguish any burning and smoking material which could be a threat to control lines," according to Florida State Parks
The area is then carefully monitored until the fire is completely out and there are no longer concerns

Yellow socks, Christmas socks, fuzzy socks and more socks are among the over 3,500 pairs of socks West Pensacola Elementary School’s annual Socktober drive has generated for those in need
This year, the school along with community partners plan to collect at least 2,000 more pairs of new socks for the homeless. The new socks will be donated to Opening Doors Northwest Florida, an agency that aims to end homelessness in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties
“Socktober: Changing Lives One Sock at A Time,” started Tuesday and will continue with corporate partner Running Wild Pensacola through Oct
West Pensacola music teacher Kyle Kaye came up with the idea of a Socktober drive in 2020
“I just thought it would be a good fit for West Pensacola, and I just love that our students are excited and committed to helping others,” said Kaye, a fan of "Kid President" actor Robby Novak who teamed up with Socktober creator Brad Montague in 2013 to spread the word about the project and encourage more people to participate
“The students are thrilled that this is something they can do themselves
We want our students to learn they can give back to people in their community – even if they have needs
We want them to know they can help others and it’s important to give back.”
West Florida Elementary students understand that and have committed themselves to meeting and exceeding this year’s Socktober goal
Fifth-grader Aunalise Rodriguez donated several packages of socks during other Socktober drives
the 10-year-old said she will give even more
“The socks will help people who need them a lot
The socks will cover their feet and help them stay warm this winter,” Aunalise said
I’m hoping to bring about three or four packs of socks.”
another West Pensacola Elementary fifth-grader
said she wants to make sure that everyone who needs socks – receives socks
“It’s generous to donate to people in need because if they don’t have anything to wear
they’ll get too cold in the wintertime,” Jordis said
West Pensacola Elementary collected 422 pairs of news socks during the Socktober drive
the number of new socks collected grew to 1,624
said the business heard all the buzz about Socktober last year and reached out to West Pensacola Elementary to help
West Pensacola adding 6th grade: Sixth-grade pilot program at some Escambia elementary schools starts positive, will expand
“We really want to give back to the community and thought this was a wonderful way to do it
and we hope to help push the school over its 2024 goal,” Bercier said
but they make a world of difference to people experiencing homelessness or financial hardship
especially as the colder months approach.”
Running Wild will pick up socks from each collection site and store them for Opening Doors Northwest Florida
we hope to relieve the school of having to store all those socks
Businesses that have donation boxes set up for socks can also drop them off at our Cervantes Street store.”
Bercier also stressed the health benefits of socks
“It’s so important to not only wear clean socks but good socks
Our feet sweat about ½ pint of water each day
and if you don’t have a good quality moisture-wicking socks
West Pensacola Elementary students also will bag the socks in packs of three
“Opening Doors told us how excited people are to receive a new pair of socks
so we decided to give them not just one pair
adding Socktober has become a Pensacola-area project with Wharton-Smith Construction Group becoming West Pensacola Elementary’s first community partner in 2021
the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System
Escambia County School District employees and others have donated to Socktober
"Socktober is about the children and families at West Pensacola giving back to the community and the community at large helping our efforts to
help the homeless population," said Christine Baker
"There are multiple organizations collecting at this point
and we are so happy that Running Wild is coming on board!"

One of the nation’s biggest supermarket chains is set to open its seventh Escambia County store in West Pensacola soon
a chain with nearly 1,400 locations across the southeast U.S.
is opening its latest Pensacola-area store at 9500 W
down the street from the intersection of South Blue Angel Parkway
early this year after breaking ground on the site in the middle of 2023
The new Publix will be located near an incoming Wawa as well
which was approved for development by Escambia County in May last year
This location is one of two Publix stores that will open in our area soon. The chain is also building another Publix in Navarre
Although Publix officials declined to provide a specific opening date for the new store
they did tell the News Journal that they plan to open the location by the end of this quarter
meaning the store could be in business by the end of March
Publix opening: Publix is building another new store in Pensacola area
Publix has steadily grown its footprint across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in recent years
Milton got its first Publix in November 2022 and the chain opened its second Navarre store in Wynnehaven Plaza the following year
Publix started construction last year on a new shopping center that will be headlined by its third Navarre-area store and will be located on the corner of Bergren Road and U.S. Highway 98
The supermarket chain has nearly 900 locations across Florida at this time after opening a store in Hollywood and Saint Cloud respectively last month
There are currently seven Publix stores open across Escambia County:
The project is proposed for the corner of Mobile Highway and Tonawanda Drive
The project’s preliminary set of site plans show that developers plan for the restaurant to be over 5,000 square feet with 74 interior seats
12 exterior seats and almost 70 parking spots
at this stage of the project’s approval process with the Development Review Committee
that the restaurant’s address will be 4735 Mobile Highway
Developers also want to create two drive-thru lanes and two access roads as part of the project
One access road will lead onto Mobile Highway
while the other will provide access to Tonawanda Drive
Chick-fil-A in Pensacola: New location planned for uptown Pensacola
Chick-fil-A already has a handful of restaurants across the county
and this project is the second new location proposed this year
A different development proposal was filed with the county in June to build a Chick-fil-A in University Town Plaza near Bubba’s 33
The plans for that project were reviewed by the DRC on June 25 and its developers have not submitted updated plans

The renovations began in the fall and different aspects of Whiskey Barrel have been opening in stages since
The new bar, which opened its doors late last year, includes a pour-your-own whiskey wall with hard-to-find pours, a Full Swing golf simulator used by Tiger Woods
an outdoor patio and more that take the Whiskey Barrel experience beyond just the bar
Need a westside watering hole? Here are 5 iconic dive bars to try
“This bar offers so many unique things,” Whiskey Barrel General Manager Glenn Austin said
who also owns liquor stores in the Pensacola area
saw the opportunity to make collector’s whiskey more accessible by creating a sampling system that provides the opportunity to taste whiskey ranging from just $5 to several hundreds of dollars a pour
depending on the experience you’re seeking
Some of the specialty varieties include Pappy Van Winkle
Customers can load up a Whiskey Barrel card at the bar
then feel free to roam the wall in choosing their glass and sample size
and scan their pre-loaded payment card to unlock the pour
“All these bottles we have here are very hard to get bottles
people go online to try and pay $1,000 for a bottle,” Kandala said
you can opt for a hand-crafted cocktail from the bar
including fan-favorites such as espresso martini
Kandala spent hundreds of thousands of dollars completely gutting Gene’s to bring a homier environment
complete with rich brown leather couches and chairs and vintage wood furniture
but equipped with state-of-the-art technology
In addition to the high-tech whiskey pour system
the Whiskey Barrel also comes equipped with a Bottoms Up beer draft system that ensures the perfect beer pour
The system eliminates waste by using a magnet on the bottom of each glass that controls the pour on the tap to get it just right
There are about eight beers on tap that use the draft system
in addition to other varieties served in bottles and cans chilled behind the bar
While the whiskey is the facility’s showstopper
Kandala ensured that there is still plenty to do entertainment-wise on the grounds even if you aren’t into alcohol
The main entertainment attraction is the Full Swing golf simulator
which replicates some of the world’s most iconic courses
and tracks the balls speed and trajectory as it hits the screen
such as Full Swing Football to Zombie Dodgeball
the Zombie Dodgeball − which requires players to field balls and chuck them at the screen as if their life depends on it − has been a proven hit
While the bar is still in its early opening stages
they will eventually be transitioning the bay to a reservation and rental basis
The complex is full of other group and solo games
including an outdoor patio area for cornhole tournaments
They also have a 10-foot giant screen for major sporting events
in addition to several other televisions throughout the bar
There is also a full food menu offered from their house food truck outside
with some of the highlights being the specially seasoned burger sliders and wide variety of flavors for jumbo wings
Customers can place their order with a bartender inside and grab a table
In addition to the food prepared from the Whiskey Barrel’s food truck
they also offer a full café menu with coffee
espresso and fruit-flavored energy drinks offered during the day
Some of the specialty drinks include the Pensacola Blondie
The facility is family-friendly in the daytime
allowing children to partake in Zombie Dodgeball and snack on barbecue wings
but transitions into a 21 years and older setting into the evening starting at about 7 p.m
the Whiskey Barrel’s food truck will serve coffee from 7-11 a.m
and lunch and dinner from the food truck will be available daily from 5 p.m
The Whiskey Barrel complex will open at 2 p.m
during the week and stay open until about midnight
closing time will depend on how busy Whiskey Barrel is
and the bar could stay open until later if there is high demand
For real-time updates and information, follow Whiskey Barrel on social media
(WCTV) - Today’s something good celebrates a community effort to clean up
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office shared photos on Facebook showing how volunteers picked up hundreds of pounds of garbage along West Pensacola Street
they collected 2,740 pounds of trash as well as a few large pieces of furniture
It’s LCSO’s second annual clean-up on Pensacola Street which is located near their office
They said to stay tuned for their next clean-up event
(This story has been updated to include new information.)
A new 36-foot-tall mural showcasing images of Pensacola will soon overlook West Garden Street
The Pensacola Architectural Review Board approved the design of a new mural that will be placed on the east side of the 100 W
The building is the office for the Pensacola division of Adams Homes and is currently undergoing a renovation that
will host 9,000 square feet of space for restaurant and retail tenants and three commercial office suits ranging from 2,700 to 3,000 square feet each
The new mural is a pop-art composite of images associated with Pensacola
like the Pensacola Beach sailfish and beachball water tower
and a large portrait of who they believe to be 16th Century Spanish conquistador Tristán de Luna
the identify of the man is being called into question and could be Luis De Velasco
the man in charge of New Spain who sent De Luna on his 1559 expedition to Pensacola
The approval for the mural was requested by Trapolin Peer Architects out of New Orleans on behalf of Adams Homes
“You guys really squeezed a lot in there,” ARB Chairman William Brantley noted during Thursday's board’s review of the proposed mural
The new mural will be 36 feet and 8 inches tall and 30 feet and 8 inches wide
It will cover a part of the building that faces Baylen Street
UWF Historic Trust preservationist Ross Pristera
told the board that the mural committee reviewed the mural and decided it would not fit within the Trust’s mural trail
but they were still supportive of building owners hanging murals on their buildings
it can be a little different,” Pristera said
“But we're a little concerned about the busyness and clarity of it.”
Pensacola Historic Preservation Planner Adrianne Walker said that the city’s land development code doesn’t specifically mention murals
but the board had the authority to vote on the mural on whether it impaired the architectural or historic value of the building and complemented the character of the district
The building is located in the Palafox Historic Business District
which is one of the districts where construction projects are subject to review by the ARB
the board unanimously voted to approve the mural
with the provision that it would be centered on the wall of the building

Documents filed with Escambia County in July show that McDonalds is planning for its next local restaurant to be located on West Fairfield Drive
The project plans call for a new, 3,700-square-foot restaurant, and its developers filed the proposal with county’s Development Review Committee (DRC) on Thursday
This new McDonald’s location is proposed for development next to the Warrington Bank on the corner of Mobile Highway and West Fairfield Drive
according to the project’s information form
Related: McDonald's eyeing Sorrento Road for their latest Escambia County restaurant
Developers proposed creating 41 parking spaces
alongside two access road leading drivers onto either Mobile Highway or West Fairfield Drive
The project’s site is currently just a parking lot but it spans about 1.19 acres
letting motorists drive straight to the nearby Home Depot rather than heading onto a main road
There’s more than one set of golden arches that could be built in our area soon
A new McDonald’s restaurant on Sorrento Road was proposed for development to the DRC this month
These projects have the same developer behind their proposals
and they are meeting with the DRC for a pre-application meeting on Wednesday to discuss both proposals
They’re also working on building a new McDonald’s on Navarre Parkway
which would be the global restaurant chain’s second location in the Navarre area

-- More than 20 units responded to a warehouse fire in West Pensacola Monday night
The fire started around a motor home parked beside the warehouse
Crews were called out to the scene around 6:15 p.m
It's a company that sells and repairs boats
The company has been operating in this building for the last three years
One of the four co-owners says tools and nine boats inside the warehouse were burned
Three boats outside of the building burned as well
All 18 of their employees were not on site
The main concern when fighting this fire: fuel and gasoline
Crews worked to keep the fuel from spreading out of the boats for several hours
who got the call on his way back from picking up a boat in Louisiana
we don’t know what the root cause was but the main shop building is totally destroyed
The contents are destroyed also," said BGS Marine Sales President and CEO Dan Boklage
But we are preparing to open up tomorrow..
Boklage says this is a $2.7 million facility
First responders described this as a "second alarm fire" -- meaning two stations were called in
the Pensacola Fire Department and Gulf Coast Emergency Services with Pensacola NAS all responded
Exactly what sparked the blaze near the motor home is still unknown
The owners say on Tuesday they'll come up with a plan to continue working on boats at the warehouse while they rebuild
A woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle in west Tallahassee early Saturday morning
According to a Tallahassee Police Department incident alert
the latest pedestrian death in Florida's capital city occurred near the intersection of West Pensacola Street and Lipona Road at approximately 2:15 a.m
was struck by a vehicle and died as a result of her injuries," TPD wrote on X
and few other details about the circumstances of the accident were provided
But a TPD spokesperson noted the crash was not a hit and run
all lanes on Pensacola Street from Lipona Road to Day Street were closed for more than four hours
The woman becomes one of eight pedestrians killed in Leon County this year
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' Florida Crash Dashboard
there have been 136 vehicle crashes involving pedestrians in 2024 not counting Saturday's death
"We need serious change to protect the people of Tallahassee," the Leon County Democratic Party wrote on X
"Far too many people have lost their lives to car crashes in this town."
In May, Commissioner Jack Porter called on the city and county governments to do more for pedestrian and cyclist safety after the death of a Florida State student
who was killed in a crosswalk by a speeding car rocked the city and campus community
In the months following the student's death, FSU President Richard McCullough and Mayor John Dailey held several meetings, which lead to intersection improvements on roads near campus including reduced speed limits
Porter has urged the city to invest in more high visibility crosswalk markings
pedestrian activated stoplights and raised crosswalks
She also urged her commission colleagues to explore joining Vision Zero
a network of cities committed to eliminating all traffic fatalities
and investing in equitable mobility for all people
The city also recently secured $9.6 million from a national grant program to fund its Jake Gaither Community Pedestrian and Street Safety Improvements project on the southside to "improve pedestrian and street safety along the roadway and sidewalk network."
TPD announced they were working alongside the Leon County Sheriff's Office and the Florida State University Police Department on a weeks-long campaign to curb what it call "dangerous driving habits" that can contribute to crashes or fatal traffic accidents
Law enforcement officers targeted high-traffic volume areas focusing on violations such as speeding
driving under the influence and seatbelt use
"Aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding
running red lights and unsafe lane changes put everyone at risk and can lead to tragic consequences," TPD wrote in a news release

Tallahassee Police Department ramps up policing to curb 'dangerous driving habits'
TPD: Woman was drinking, on FaceTime just before Aug. 4 Tallahassee hit-and-run death
Sunday's fatal pedestrian crash was a hit-and-run, Tallahassee Police Department says
and the nonprofit pushing the project says community input is wanted and needed to move forward
The project is known as The Bluffline
It’s a plan to knit together existing public parks via neglected rail and utility rights-of-way which would create one continuous
multi-use path stretching from the University of West Florida to “Jackson Lakes.” Jackson Lakes is part of an area that includes nearly 70 acres of county-owned land located between Navy Boulevard and Jackson Street and is home to three large
Jackson Creek also flows through the area, a freshwater creek that runs into Bayou Chico that impressed even Andrew Jackson who once camped there
waterlilies and a natural spring that feeds one of the lakes
privately owned landfill that bordered one of the lakes a few years ago and county staff say testing shows the water and soil around the lakes is not contaminated by pollution
The greenway project would kick off with the development of a park
trails and other amenities at Jackson Lakes
should The Bluffline receive the EPA grant
“Jackson Lakes used to be the Clark Sand Pits and there were three borrow pits here on site,” said Chips Kirschenfeld
"When the county purchased the property in 2001
it was purchased with state funds from the Northwest Florida Water Management District
Commissioner Mike Bass at the time did have a vision for this area
The proposed 15 miles of trails from UWF would not only wind through rights-of-way owned by CSX and Florida Power & Light
but also those owned by Escambia County and the city of Pensacola
neighborhoods and healthcare facilities through the city and county
it would take people to locations like Global Learning Academy
Jackson Lakes and Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve & Nature Trail
“You would have sidewalk or trail improvements along existing county rights-of-way for that connectivity,” said Tim Day
Escambia County's natural resources management director
provide opportunities for area citizens to interact with nature
The Bluffline project was launched by Jarah Jacquay
president and co-founder of The Bluffline and T.S
director of strategy for the nonprofit organization
Their goal with creating the public greenway from UWF to West Pensacola is to reconnect people “with their bodies
They were successful in getting the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to add The Bluffline corridor to the Office of Greenways of Trails
which Jacquay said greenlights state funding to eventually build out the entire multi-use trail
but doesn’t cover improvements like benches
They’ve also been awarded a technical assistance grant from the EPA to help them design and refine the plan so they can go after a much larger grant of between $10 million and $20 million through the Environmental Protection Agency’s Community Change Grant Program
The deadline to apply is coming up at the end of the year
the money would fund the development of Jackson Lakes
and the men say the project would be completed by 2028 at no cost to the county
Previously: Bluffline wants to create a new public greenway between Scenic Highway and the westside
“We've already had a site visit from the design firm with EPA administrators from (Washington) D.C
and Atlanta who have come down and vetted the project and said
This is the sort of project that we are looking for,’” Jacquay said
He said the EPA is interested in the plan because it not only encourages outdoor activity, but it would spark growth and development in communities like Warrington and West Pensacola that have been plagued by blight and poverty
issues that are a concern to the community and local military leadership
“It's something that Naval Air Station Pensacola and Corry Station really think is needed,” Jacquay said
“They want these areas to be revitalized and people to want to live and work in West Pensacola because our national security depends on it
and they've had some problems with recruiting because of the current physical conditions of West Pensacola.”
Jackson Lakes and the surrounding Warrington community are in Escambia County Commissioner Mike Kohler’s district. He has been working with county code enforcement to clean up blight in the area and supports the project if they can get the funding
“I like the idea because of the surrounding area,” said Kohler
in Brownsville we're trying to do some work there and on this side we’re cleaning up Bayou Chico
We got about $11 million for taking out toxic sediment there
I think it would help the community and anything that can get people outside is good.”

The new program makes UCF-HCA Graduate Medical Education Consortium one of the fastest-growing programs in the state
UCF-HCA Healthcare have announced a new transitional year residency program at HCA Florida West Hospital in Pensacola and are seeking applications to begin training this July
The transitional year program is a one-year training that provides newly graduated M.D.s with comprehensive clinical skills before they go on to more specialized training in areas such as ophthalmology
dermatology and physical medicine and rehabilitation
the UCF-HCA Graduate Medical Education Consortium now has 41 residencies and fellowships across Florida
making it one of the fastest-growing programs in the state
the consortium is training more than 650 physicians across the state
The program will accept 12 residents annually
Applications must be submitted through ERAS (NRMP Program Code: 1587999P3)
Qualified candidates will be invited for interviews
with the program participating in the match week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program if needed
Transitional year residents will train in the hospital’s ICU
Surgery and OBGYN areas and have experiences in both inpatient and outpatient settings
the program emphasizes healthcare advocacy and the promotion of preventive healthcare services
UCF and HCA Healthcare leaders say the transition program also will create a coordinated
robust learning environment at HCA West Florida Pensacola
as its dermatology and physical medicine and rehabilitation residents can do their preliminary year in the same hospital system where they will get their specialized training
Medical school graduates cannot practice independently until they receive residency training in their specialty of choice
Residency and fellowship programs are a key to addressing Florida’s physician shortage as a majority of doctors set up their practices where they do their graduate training
“With the rising demand for skilled physicians across Florida and the nation
it is more important than ever to provide comprehensive training that supports the evolving needs of healthcare,” says Stephen Cico
the UCF College of Medicine’s associate dean for graduate medical education and the program’s designated institutional official
“The transitional year is designed to prepare residents with a solid foundation in clinical medicine
empowering them to pursue advanced training and make meaningful contributions to the health and well-being of their communities.”

Longleaf Elementary will be the third Escambia County Public Schools elementary school to add sixth-grade classes
Fifth graders at the school will have the option of moving into sixth-grade classes at the West Pensacola elementary this fall
Seventh- and eighth-grade classes will follow in fall 2026-2027 and fall 2027-2028
“All of the students who are at Longleaf now will eventually rise through there, if everything remains the same, to eighth grade,” said Superintendent Keith Leonard
The school’s student population – pre-K through sixth grade – will grow to about 610 students with the addition of extra grade
The increase also will mean at least two more teachers as well as additional support staff
Leonard said families also may be able to choice into Longleaf Elementary next fall – but that will depend on the school’s capacity
Cordova Park and West Pensacola expand:: Escambia Schools is adding sixth grade to two elementary schools next year. Here's why
“This transition is expected to have a beneficial impact academically and help address capacity issues arising from the housing developments in the area,” Leonard added
In Fall 2024, the school district added sixth-grade classes to Cordova Park and West Pensacola elementary schools as part of a new pilot program
Leonard said the Cordova Park and West Pensacola extensions reinforced academic consistency and provided an additional year before those students transition to middle school
“Feedback from students and families indicates that this initiative has been well received
and we plan to continue it in the coming years,” he said
adding there are no current plans to add seventh or eighth grades to Cordova Park or West Pensacola
is looking forward to the additional grades – but said the three-year timeframe will allow the conversion to be gradual
“We currently have three fifth-grade classes
and we’ve invited all those students to come to sixth grade
That doesn’t mean they’ll all come,” Brown said
noting the school has the room to support the additional students
He said Longleaf Elementary was his first principal job 15 years ago
and at that time the school had around 800 students
Most Longleaf Elementary parents are happy with the additional grades – especially sixth grade
“A lot of the parents that I’ve talked with are excited about the sixth-grade option
Middle school is a tough transition for parents and students
Students are going through a lot of changes
both physically and emotionally,” said Brown
"Parents are sometimes leery to send their kids to middle school
they pull their kid for private school: Brown Barge
the sixth-grade classes will be like a traditional middle school – students will change classes
Not six or seven times a day but between at least two teachers
He admitted that Longleaf is not yet able to offer all the middle school extracurriculars – sports
– but the elementary is looking at other options
“We’re trying to come up with some things to combat that
you have the option to go into band or chorus
So that teacher is trying to think of something
but it will be the next step up for strings students.”
Missing the middle school experience doesn’t matter to fifth graders Braylin Emmons
Both want to remain at Longleaf Elementary
“I’m looking forward to staying here as long as possible
I love it here and it’s helping me learn a lot,” said Braylin
who transferred to Longleaf in third grade
Braylin also likes Longleaf because her younger brother
Paul said has found his tribe at Longleaf and is excited about spending sixth
“All of the teachers like me; they actually acknowledge me
attended Longleaf but is now a Beulah Middle School student
a fifth-grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher
has seen student enrollment decrease at Longleaf Elementary
so I’m excited about sixth grade being here because I think the kids need to be,” said Watkins
who has taught at Longleaf Elementary for 18 years
“I grew up going to an elementary school that was a K-6 so I know that it can work
The fifth graders are a little more apprehensive about going to middle school and being with older kids
She added the students are ready for sixth grade
They have to be more independent and that’s what we’re stressing here
We’re compartmentalized to get them ready – different teachers

Kahia Ross and Sawyer Valdez are enjoying sixth grade at their elementary schools
“I’m happy because I get to stay with my best friend,” said Kahia when asked about remaining at West Pensacola
a school she has attended since kindergarten
“I like this better because I’ve heard in middle school you only have five minutes to get to each class
and sometimes you must go to the opposite side of the school.”
it was also about staying at Cordova Park with longtime friends
Sixth grade pilot program: Escambia Schools is adding sixth grade to two elementary schools next year. Here's why
“We believe it is a good opportunity for a sixth-grader to extend that ‘elementary experience’ or have the option – depending upon their level of maturity
where they are academically or perhaps what their interests may be,” said Leonard
who explained if a student wanted to play a sport
they could attend their zoned middle school or apply for Brown Barge Middle School
For sixth-graders whose parents opted for the elementary route
Leonard said the school district is trying to give those students experiences such as campus leadership
The school district plans to expand sixth-grade classes to other elementary schools
the time will be dependent upon what best serves the students
add sixth grade at Longleaf Elementary School,” Leonard said
noting seventh- and eighth-grade classes also will be incorporated into the school in a staggered fashion
“So that would give us an opportunity to provide – at that site – all the other amenities that a K-8
other extracurricular activities like band and chorus
That is a site that we feel as through we can do that,” he said
adding Longleaf is near Pine Forest High School and George Stone Technical College
He added the expansion would help the school district meet the growing needs of the Beulah community
“We have Beulah Middle School and the community where there are many
and families moving into those homes with school-age children
We have purchased property – a third or fourth of a mile from Beulah Elementary School – to perhaps construct a primary elementary and an intermediate elementary,” he said
“That K-8 (Longleaf Elementary) would help alleviate some of the student-population pressure at Beulah Middle School
it also may help alleviate some pressure at other elementary schools and middle schools.”
parents and students who opted to remain at Cordova Park and West Pensacola are pleased
“Our decision to keep Sawyer in Cordova Park for sixth grade was probably the best one for him
The smaller class setting has been wonderful for him,” said Aisling Valdez
who is also a Cordova Park kindergarten teacher
“He may have fallen through the cracks in a middle school
He needed that extra support that Cordova Park Elementary School gives the students
The sixth-graders also like the familiarity of their elementary schools
and I’ve been at Cordova Park so long – it’s my comfort zone,” said Sawyer who has been at the school since kindergarten
“Sixth grade does feel different from fifth grade
The math and reading are harder and we’re changing classes now.”
“I don’t like uniforms and I agree with Kahia
You go to straight to your next class,” he said
said he’s excited to be in the first class of sixth-graders
“It’s good because the teachers can test it (the pilot program) out to see how it works and they can make improvements for next year when the next sixth-graders come,” he said
“And it’s also really fun that we get to stay here again.”
West Pensacola and Cordova Park sixth-grade teachers say the smaller classes allow them to get to know each of their students
said his students are doing well academically
“I have about 25 kids and I see them for the majority of the day so I can see their growth – not in just one subject or two subjects but overall
I can continue to build relationships with my students and keep them on track,” said Ray
who added at a traditional middle school he would have about 120 students each day
said she can meet the individual needs of each of her students
“We are able to get know each student and meet their needs with small group learning
and whole group learning with just small class sizes,” Amberson said
“The students are still in that elementary mindset
…We are helping transition them into that middle school learning
so next year when they go to an actual middle school
they are ready to learn in that middle school environment.”
West Pensacola Elementary has 28 students and Cordova Park has 25 students in two sixth-grade classes this year
“I anticipate more students staying next year
and some parents may have been a little hesitant,” said West Pensacola Principal Christine Baker
“But this is going to be a growing year for us
We have planned field trips to Roy Hyatt Environmental Center and the (NAS) Flight Deck for all our sixth-graders
We’ve also started student leadership programs
and partnered with the Family YMCA to offer after-school sports.”
She said her sixth-graders also have taken their roles as school leaders serious
“They want the school to be called West Pensacola K-6
The sixth-graders don’t want to be only identified as an elementary school,” she said
said there has been a lot of positive feedback from parents
“We have several parents who would like to see us have seventh and eighth grade here,” she said
“I’m one of those parents who would love for Cordova Park to become a K-8 school,” Aisling Valdez added
The building that housed Jim & Milt’s Bar B-Q on West Pensacola Street for 43 years was demolished Wednesday
The iconic barbecue joint shuttered in 2021 when longtime owner Mike Flury decided it was time to retire
The building, which has been vacant for nearly three years, was demolished to make way for what patrons are highly anticipating will become Tallahassee’s first Cook Out restaurant, a popular chain eatery with a cult-like following
The former eatery was once described by a restaurant reviewer to longtime Democrat columnist Gerald Ensley as a "Korean War field kitchen-turned-juke joint" and a second home to Florida State students and townie patrons alike
founded the original restaurant in 1968 in a warehouse of their concrete piling and foundation business
they sold it to former Florida State football star Del Williams
and then it passed through three or four more owners before Flury bought it in 1979
From 2021: 'No other place like it': 'Tallahassee staple' Jim and Milt's Bar B-Q closing as owner retires
Moore Bass Consulting Group agent Ben Hood told the Tallahassee Democrat in earlier reports that the demolition for Jim & Milt’s 240-square-foot billboard had been approved
But permits to demolish the building at 1923 W
along with three small houses located behind the property at 224
were still up in the air by the city's Development Review Committee in April 2023
Representatives from Moore Bass Consulting Group could not be immediately reached Wednesday to give an update on the fast food chain's development
a picture of the building's demolition circulated on Facebook
Ensley noted that customers first stumble across Jim & Milt's as financially struggling students — then they just keep coming back
"It's such an unpretentious place," then FSU Associate Athletics Director Bernie Waxman told Ensley
"You could have a guy working the roads sitting on one side of you and the governor on the other side."
