The Crabtree Creek West Trail is the trail section of the Crabtree Creek Greenway corridor between Lindsay Drive and the eastern boundary of Umstead State Park on Ebenezer Church Road
This new trail section is approximately two miles in length and is a critical link in a regional greenway system
connecting multiple neighborhoods and business centers in Raleigh.

The project is complete and the new trail is open to the public.Parking lot access and accessible parking is available at 4924 Ebenezer Church Rd, Raleigh NC.
The Capital Area Greenway System was first adopted by City Council in 1976. This plan proposed a system of linear parks located primarily along rivers, streams, and creeks, and included the opportunity for an interconnected system of pedestrian trails across the region. The existing Crabtree Creek Trail extends from Lindsay Drive, east of Duraleigh Road to the Neuse River Trail.
The Crabtree Creek West Trail project is funded by the 2014 Parks Bond Referendum and a Wake County Open Space Grant.
This project is important both locally and regionally. This is the last remaining incomplete major segment of the three main greenway corridors included in the Capital Area Greenway System - the Neuse River, Crabtree Creek, and Walnut Creek. Crabtree Creek has been identified in the System Plan as a Cross-City Connector, emphasizing its importance locally.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down and allow extra time for their commutes
The I-440 project will widen I-440 from four to six lanes and replace pavement and bridges between Walnut Street in Cary and Wade Avenue in Raleigh
The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2025
WRAL viewers talked about enduring construction barrels and closed lanes along I-440 between Raleigh and Cary for years
with an estimated completion date of summer 2023
NCDOT spokesperson Kim Deaner said frustrated drivers will thank the state in the long run.
“Folks are going to love 440 once they use all those lanes and once all those barrels go away,” Deaner said.
Raleigh ranked 59 among 64 cities comparing 2023 footfall to 2019
The capital city jumped 3.9% in foot traffic from May 2023 to May 2024
placing it at #19 in recovery percentage for that one year
Researchers also noted that downtowns have had better luck recovering from the COVID slump by creating hubs for entertainment
WRAL asked people what they thought about downtown
"There's a lot of cool spaces to be...there's a lot of cool bars...[there's] a lot of community spaces
Another person Luke Rapisarda said he found his happy medium in downtown Raleigh
"I wanted the feel of a big city but not necessarily the buzz you would get in a big city
"Anything you want to do is in walking distance."
He said he wants to see more connectivity between downtown and surrounding areas

A man suspected in a dozen shootings into cars and homes on and around Interstate 40 was arrested
happened in a neighborhood near I-40 in west Raleigh Thursday morning
where an occupied car was shot into.
Andrew Graney, 23, was arrested in connection with the shootings.
Graney was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and 11 counts of firing a weapon into an occupied vehicle or dwelling.
A second person was detained along with Graney but they were released several hours later with no charges, according to police.
At least six cars were shot at or shot into while driving along I-40 earlier this week, according to the Raleigh Police Department. Four homes were also hit with gunfire in the same area Wednesday.
“I am thankful that no one has been seriously injured,” Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said in a news conference Thursday afternoon.
“Our collaborative team is working nonstop around the clock, and will continue to do so,” she said. “I’m thankful to the public and grateful for your understanding. These things take time.”
The latest shooting was on Trailwood Drive, near where the shootings happened on the highway. A man was driving when his vehicle was hit on the driver side, police said. The man was not hurt.
Police launched a massive search in the area near N.C. State University Thursday morning, including a helicopter from the State Highway Patrol.
Graney was later arrested in a neighborhood off of Tryon Road, on Kentford Court.
"At approximately 8:53 a.m., we responded to a report of shots fired into a vehicle in the 1400 block of Trailwood Dr.," a police spokesman said Thursday. "This is an active investigation, and it is currently unknown whether this incident is related to previous reports."
Thursday's shooting put nearby Centennial Campus Magnet Middle School into a "code yellow" lockdown because of the police activity in the area. That lockdown was lifted before the end of the school day.
N.C. State University also warned students about the police search in the area.
Officers believe a handgun was being used in the shootings, which they called "extremely concerning."
The first shooting was reported Monday on I-40 near the Chapel Hill Road exit, where police say a woman was shot in the leg. She's expected to be OK. Later that day, police said another vehicle was shot at on the highway, this time near the Buck Jones Road exit. No one was hurt.
Police said four other vehicles were shot at Thursday on I-40, again near the Chapel Hill Road exit. No injuries were reported.
The Chapel Hill Road and Buck Jones Road exits are consecutive exits on I-40 in west Raleigh.
“We recognize that these events are extremely concerning and frightening to those that travel on that stretch of highway, and we are taking these incidents very seriously," Raleigh Police Deputy Chief Rico Boyce said in a press conference Thursday morning.
According to police, the shootings happened at the following locations:
Officers with Highway Patrol, the Wake County Sheriff's Office and the Cary Police Department are helping Raleigh police with the investigation. Multiple police vehicles were set up along I-40 in hopes of pinpointing the person at the center of the vehicle shootings.
“We’re going to be out there until we find out who was responsible for this incident," Boyce said Thursday.
Police offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Police are asking anyone with a dash cam who traveled along the stretch of I-40 to contact them and urge anyone with information to call the police department at 919-996-3335.

Changes support Raleigh's Comprehensive Plan
2024 City Council reviewed the remaining portions of the rezoning request for the Western Station Area and took the following actions:
All discussion of Z-92-22 has now concluded
Raleigh City Council acted Tuesday night to formalize a vision for the places around the New Bern Avenue corridor and other planned Bus Rapid Transit routes. The action made several amendments to the City’s Comprehensive Plan
which sets out policies and guidelines for development across the City
The intent of the amendments (CP-7-22) is to support growth around transit projects that in turn supports transit
They aim to improve things like sustainability by reducing cars on the road and
They institute new or leverage existing programs to reduce neighborhood displacement and increase housing affordability
The changes were one of two items on the City Council agenda Tuesday night. The Council deferred action on a related rezoning case until March 5. The case, Z-92-22
proposes rezoning 744 properties along New Bern Avenue covering 726 acres to also support new transit investments
Council asked staff to report back with options to consider the rezoning request in several phases
The public hearing remains open for the March 5 evening meeting

The Wake BRT: Western Corridor will connect downtown Raleigh to downtown Cary
Wake County Voters approved a plan for focused investment in public transit which puts the implementation of the Wake County Transit Plan in motion
The plan calls for building approximately 20 miles of transit lanes along four (4) BRT corridors within Wake County (Wake BRT)
The preliminary design phase (0 to 30 percent) for the Western Corridor BRT is underway
It will operate in both dedicated transit lanes and mixed traffic between GoRaleigh station in downtown Raleigh and downtown Cary

The Western Corridor was further evaluated in the Wake Transit Plan Major Investment Study (MIS) completed in 2018
The planning phase began in November 2019 with the Western Boulevard Corridor Study (WBCS)
The goal of the study was to create a plan for the successful implementation of BRT service along the corridor
The study analyzed the land use capacity and urban form of the corridor to develop a conceptual land use plan
the study recommended a preferred route for the BRT
known as the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA)
A kickoff meeting was held in November 2019. Public participation helped to prioritize areas for redevelopment along the corridor. View the survey results.
