A 21-year-old woman walking late Thursday in the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue was sexually assaulted by a man now in custody
A 19-year-old man in custody for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint late Thursday night in Rogers Park is also a person of interest in a string of robberies and sexual assaults in West Ridge
A 21-year-old woman was walking in the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue shortly after 11 p.m
pulled out a knife and sexually assaulted her
The man fled — possibly on a bicycle — and the woman went to a police station to report the assault
Francis Hospital in Evanston in good condition
Responding officers took a 19-year-old man into custody
and a police spokesperson confirmed he is the same person allegedly linked to a string of violent sexual attacks and robberies since December
Residents of the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue told the Sun-Times they were surprised to hear about the attack on their block and others in the area
“That was kind of shocking,” said Irving Zucker
who has lived in Rogers Park for about 50 years
but I can imagine how some people would be really freaked out by what happened because it is really a terrible thing,” said Zucker
A pair of women walk their dog in the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood on Friday
the suspect — who may have been using a bicycle — allegedly robbed the victims at knifepoint and in at least three instances sexually assaulted the victims he robbed
Ashley Elrod and Ryan Poe have lived in the neighborhood for a couple of years and have never felt unsafe

KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett had production up and down the lineup against West Ridge in Thursday’s elimination game at the District 1-4A baseball tournament
Dobyns-Bennett (27-7) will face Daniel Boone in another elimination game Friday at 5 p.m
The Indians scored four runs in the first inning and seven more in the second to set the tone against the Wolves
That was a big thing for us early in the game,” Dobyns-Bennett coach Ryan Wagner said
It doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the regular season
We’ve just got to stay consistent and be ready to go tomorrow.”
two on a monster home run over right field
Cam Hayworth had two hits and drew two walks as the Indians were patient in their approaches
“I’ve been hot and seeing the ball very well lately,” Hayworth said
“It’s easy when you’re hot to get the pitch you want
Hayworth added it was important to get the lead early
The four runs in the first gave D-B some cushion as Jones faced control issues
giving up a pair of runs and five walks before turning the reins over to Baker Correll
who gave up four hits and two runs to get the win
There was plenty of run support with Dobyns-Bennett’s lead-off Tegan Begley accounting for two RBIs and two runs scored
numbers matched by Kasey Carter hitting in the nine-hole
Taylor Blankenship also had two hits and two RBIs in the middle of the lineup
Carter talked about his two-run double early in the game
“It was a low inside pitch and I just hit it,” he said
He also starred on the defensive side at shortstop with he and Maddox Martin teaming for a double play to put an early end to the game
“We’ve been playing together since we were eight,” Carter said
It was the end of the season for West Ridge (10-19)
which cut the lead to 4-2 in the second inning
Morgan Ward led the Wolves by going 2 for 2 and scoring two runs
Reed White and Bradyn Vance all finished with a RBI

we examined the pioneering 1979 ascent of Everest’s West Ridge Direct route
a team that included Bulgarian alpinist Hristo Prodanov completed the only repeat of this demanding route
Prodanov was a metallurgical engineer whose true passion was mountaineering
Starting in 1958 in Bulgaria’s Pirin Mountains
he became one of his country’s greatest climbers
Prodanov made several important climbs in the Alps
he ascended the North Face of the Grandes Jorasses via the Walker Spur and the Petit Dru by the Bonatti Pillar
He knocked off the North Face of the Matterhorn in 1974 and the Petit Dru by the Guides Route in 1977
He also carried out several climbs in the Caucasus
including Ushba Pillar in 1970 and a traverse on Shkhelda in 1973
he summited 7,134m Lenin Peak (now called Ibn Sina Peak) in the Pamirs
he climbed 7,492m Noshaq in the Hindu Kush
He successfully climbed 7,105m Korzhenevskaya Peak three times (in 1979
and he also summited Communism Peak (now Ismail Samani) twice
Prodanov became the first Bulgarian to summit an 8,000m peak when he did 8,516m Lhotse
Prodanov reached the summit alone and without supplemental oxygen
a Bulgarian expedition led by Avram Iliev Avramov (with Prodanov as deputy leader) headed to Everest
The team established Base Camp on March 18
plus other Sherpas to work as support staff above Base Camp
Avramov’s party chose the difficult West Ridge Direct route
Five expeditions targeted Everest that spring: two on the Nepalese side and three from Tibet
Avramov’s team shared the mountain with an Indian party led by Darshan Kumar Khullar
Khullar’s team targeted the normal route (South Col-Southeast Ridge)
the expedition had set up Camp 1 at Lho La (6,050m)
with Ang Rita and Ang Zangbu assisting with gear transport
the expedition established Camp 2 at 6,770m
they dug a snow cave large enough for 15 people
Prodanov and Chowang Rinzi established Camp 4 at 7,520m
Prodanov and Chowang Rinzi reached 8,120m and set up Camp 5
and Dinio Tomov completed Camp 4 and stayed there overnight
Ang Rita and Ang Zangbu remained at the lower camps
Prodanov and Chowang Rinzi left Camp 5 at 5:45 am in clear
Chowang Rinzi aborted his summit push because of the technical difficulty of the West Ridge and returned to Camp 4
reporting steady progress on the West Ridge
He said that he found a pyramid of empty oxygen bottles left by Soviet climbers
Prodanov tore off a fragment of the flag as a memento
Prodanov spent 33 minutes on the summit and abandoned his 8mm camera there after removing the film
Then he started his descent via the West Ridge
This was the first recorded ascent of Everest in April
and Prodanov also became the first Bulgarian to summit the highest peak in the world
Looking down the West Ridge from close to 8,000m
He explained that he would bivouac because it was too dark
Prodanov maintained voice contact with Base Camp until 5:30 pm
his voice was weak and almost unintelligible
He relayed that he had lost his gloves and could not use his fingers
The oxygen-free climb was impacting his health
Prodanov turned on his walkie-talkie but was unable to speak
The start of the West Ridge Direct is in shadow on the far left
when Prodanov was in trouble but still in contact
Lyudmil Yankov set out immediately and covered more than 1,000m in one push
He couldn’t find any trace of Prodanov
trying to keep Prodanov awake: “Don’t fall asleep
Yankov was finally ordered to descend in bad weather
with severe frostbite on four of his fingers
According to a note in The Himalayan Database written by Prachanda Shrestha from the Tourism Ministry of Nepal
“I see nobody to rescue me,” aware that he was alone and that no one could assist him immediately
Having risked his life to try and save Prodanov
Although Prodanov survived more than 50 hours in the death zone
bad weather kept the other climbers in their tents and prevented any further rescue efforts
a group of climbers started a second summit bid from Base Camp
Metodi Savov and Ivan Valtchev began their summit push
but ran out of energy near the 8,765m South Summit and spent the night without shelter or oxygen
Nikolai Petkov and Kiril Doskov summited at 10:10 am and also went down the normal route
They found Savov exhausted 30m below the South Summit
They gave him oxygen from the Indian expedition team
Savov was airlifted to Kathmandu on May 12
and the expedition left the region on May 13
The Bulgarian and the Indian expeditions worked well together
The Indian team allowed the Bulgarians to use their tents and oxygen
and the Bulgarians later left their walkie-talkies for the Indians
Svetoslav Kolev of the Bulgarian Mountaineering Federation told the American Alpine Journal that this Everest traverse would have been impossible without the Indian expedition’s generous help
and medicine during the Bulgarian descent on the normal route
Prodanov’s achievement was an important feat
He became the first and only person to summit the West Ridge Direct without supplemental oxygen
he did not complete the climb as he perished during the descent
Bulgaria acknowledged him as the “Number 1 Bulgarian Mountaineer of the 20th Century” and awarded him the title of Hero of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria posthumously in 1984
Savov and Valtchev survived an open bivouac at 8,600m-8,700m
The two pairs of Bulgarian climbers completed the first full West Ridge–Southeast Ridge traverse and the second overall traverse of the mountain
As we pointed out in our Nejc Zaplotnik story
Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld’s ascent of the West Ridge in 1963 was different from the “Direct” route
They joined the West Ridge from the Western Cwm at around 7,500m
they diverged to the Hornbein Couloir (8,000-8,500m) to the summit
The 1979 Yugoslav ascent was the first complete ascent of the West Ridge
They climbed from Lho La (6,050m) to the summit
avoiding deviations (Western Cwm to the West Ridge)
and descended via the North Face (Hornbein) and the West Ridge
The 1984 Bulgarian ascent of the West Ridge Direct was by a partially new route
as the Bulgarians climbed the entire West Ridge proper
and didn’t deviate to the Hornbein Couloir
his niece Mariana Prodanova Maslarova attempted Everest
She tried a similar oxygen-free ascent to honor her uncle on the 20th anniversary of his 1984 climb
Mariana attempted to ascend the peak from the north but disappeared at 8,700m

Alcantara said he will soon have a food truck that will operate around town for community events
He's also looking for a brick-and-mortar space
"I want to be in downtown Topeka because I see there's only American
everybody from every side of town to just go there."

Prices for teriyaki platters served with rice or noodles range from $10.75 to $14.75
Alcantara sold chicken and beef teriyaki plates for $9 while supplies lasted
said the mall team remains committed to its efforts
Alcantara simply did not comply with the terms of his lease with the mall," Richardson told The Capital-Journal
"We remain committed to providing a positive experience for our guests and tenants as we continue to evolve the offerings at West Ridge Mall."
Alcantara said he prefers to not "bash them" and is committed to finding a new home for his business
West Ridge will now offer two restaurant-style choices for customers at the food court: Boxer Q BBQ and Rosi's

A 21-year-old woman walking late Thursday in the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue was sexually assaulted
Prosecutors have accused Tymarion Averyhart of Edgewater in that attack and several others
A 19-year-old man was charged Sunday with eight felonies in a string of sexual assaults and robberies
most of which occurred at the same West Ridge apartment complex over the last five months
Tymarion Averyhart of Edgewater was charged with sexual assault with a weapon
a Cook County judge ordered Averyhart detained until trial
The most recent incident happened late Thursday in Rogers Park
Prosecutors said Averyhart allegedly contacted a woman on an escort website and arranged to meet her at an apartment building in the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue
who ended up meeting with Averyhart instead
blindfolded her with a T-shirt and had her take her clothes off
He then allegedly raped her in the courtyard of the building
He did not pay her the agreed upon $400 fee
A Chicago police surveillance team had been following him and saw him meet up with the woman
A short time later Averyhart was arrested about a block away on Greenleaf Avenue
He was also charged in three other incidents
all in the same apartment building in West Ridge
A woman living in the building in the 6200 block of North Bell Avenue left for vacation from Dec
prosecutors allege Averyhart broke in and stole her ID
Averyhart allegedly had the ID and Social Security card in his possession
a woman in a different unit in the building awoke to find a man dressed in all black with a face mask on bending over her
He then allegedly raped her and took her apartment keys
She texted a friend that night about what happened
Prosecutors say the attacker was Averyhart
based on DNA testing from a sexual assault kit
though the woman couldn’t identify him when shown his photo
the woman living in the first West Ridge apartment that Averyhart allegedly broke into came home after working a night shift and found a used condom
Police collected the materials and determined the DNA in the condom was Averyhart’s
senseless crime committed against three different victims,” Circuit Court Judge Rivanda Doss said during Sunday’s pretrial hearing
“There is clearly an escalation in the viciousness and violence of these incidents
When Cody Foster and David Callanan purchased West Ridge Mall in September 2023
The two men — co-owners of the Topeka-based Advisors Excel that has seen rapid growth in the past 20 years — were determined to save the mall
After teasing a new look for the mall last year
Foster dove into the details of what is to come as community leaders and mall tenants gathered
Foster announced he and Callanan will be the new owners of the JCPenney space
The company announced it would close eight of its stores — and the Topeka store is on that list
locations have been closing their doors nationwide
Foster said the site of JCPenney will become the new grand entry for West Ridge Mall
It will have a new modern appearance with all glass and a new opening
The Capital-Journal reached out to JCPenney for comment but didn't receive an immediate response
Advisors Excel still plans to move headquarters to West Ridge MallFoster said he would like to move most, if not all Advisors Excel’s office space into the mall
Advisors Excel would move its headquarters to the former Burlington Coat Factory space
West Ridge will be taken from "about 1 million square footage" to "about 600,000." Advisors Excel will use the remaining 400,000 square foot of space
"The other thing we heard very clearly from a lot of architects
tenants that we talked to is we've got to downsize the detail footprint of West Ridge," said Foster
"It's just way too big for the current shopping trends and then consolidate this retail into kind of a more constricted area
"We looked at (Burlington Coat Factory) specifically
and when the opportunity came to acquire this
it seemed to make a lot of sense as we continue to grow as an organization."
Current locations for Advisors Excel will be repurposedSeth Wagoner
an equity firm founded and owned by Foster
said the current Advisors Excel building at 2950 S.W
McClure Road would remain open for company trainings
Gage Center Drive will be leased to other tenants
"The Gage Center — I don't feel like we're going to have a problem leasing that out to people
They're looking for class A office space," Wagoner said
Wagoner told The Capital-Journal he realized the mall's price per square footage for tenants to lease were "astronomical," but they've been made much more affordable for tenants
Downsizing the retail space will most likely make a difference in rates
"We're going to give you a standard rate per square foot," said Wagoner
we are shrinking the retail footprint here
so we probably will be raising the cost per square foot over time
but that's going to step with the development and who comes in
Will national retailers eventually join West Ridge Mall?Foster said his team is speaking with national retailers about coming to Topeka
"We've had some new discussions with national tenants
when you have your plans done and you know what you're doing
Foster said the goal is to get more national retailers in West Ridge
and Trader Joe's is first on his team's wishlist
the owners anticipate beginning conversations with those potential retailers in coming weeks
Phase one will include the development of the Advisors Excel space and JC Penney as they are the "least disruptive to the mall's operations."
Phase two would include redevelopment of other entry points into the mall
The new look to those will include new outside steps
Construction is anticipated to begin in the "late third quarter."
Foster and Callanan chose Dallas-based Russell Glen Co
Russell Glen is a privately owned and fully integrated real estate investment and development firm
Maiden said the process has been great in learning more about West Ridge Mall
"I think some of the conversations that we're having right now with retailers are encouraging," he said
"I'm excited to see the future of West Ridge Mall
In May of last year, The Capital-Journal reported Foster
Callanan and lead developer Maiden announced they had chosen architectural firms RDC and Hufft to focus on the mall's transformation
and Hufft for Advisors Excel's new headquarters
Maiden said choosing the firms was important because of West Ridge's importance in the Topeka community
"We wanted to ensure that we found the right design firm with substantial experience and belief in our vision," Maiden said
"It was a very competitive process with many firms interested in the project
but we ultimately decided that Hufft and RDC collaboration was the best fit."

March 20): The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has identified Neil Rogers

Shopping malls may seem like they're shrinking
but most are only transitioning to what best fits their market
Foster spoke with small business owners and Terrance Maiden
Russell Glen is a real estate investment and development firm
Foster and his business partner David Callanan chose Russell Glen Co
Maiden said West Ridge's anticipated transition is similar to many malls across the states
"What we're looking to incorporate from a design development standpoint at West Ridge is similar to what we're seeing happening with malls across the U.S.," said Maiden
"Where department stores are closing and owners and developers are trying to think of creative ways to repurpose those spaces and activate it for the community."
Identifying a need in the areaMalls were generally built in the early 1970s to 1980s
the strategy was to get big department stores to anchor the mall
"And the thought process is that people will come out and go to your Sears or Macy's or Dillards," he said
they would meander through the inline mall that connects to these other department stores
Malls now face the challenge of being overbuilt
causing them to have to adjust by identifying what's best for the area
More: Midwest Barber College to close its doors this month. Here's what the owner says
Maiden said the decision for West Ridge's upcoming transition came from market conditions and wanting to resize the retail footprint for the market
"The second thing was it was really driven by Advisors Excel and their desire to sort of consolidate their headquarters there," he said
"And I think that lastly would be Cody Foster's commitment to the Topeka community and wanting to create something that will be community-based and drive more activity to West Ridge."
e-commerce really revolutionized retail where people didn't have to go and travel to these major department stores to have or to go shop," Maiden said
when e-commerce came available and online shopping
that's when your department stores were really impacted and you started seeing a number of the department stores file for bankruptcy or start closing their stores
"And that's sort of where we are right now
And this evolution of repositioning malls is that now the department stores have closed
developers are trying to think of creative ways to reactivate these spaces."
"Establishing an effective omnichannel strategy is increasingly becoming a necessity in retail
with brick-and-mortar retailers looking to combat challenges from e-commerce," said Coresight Research
"And online brands seeking to expand their reach and tackle rising customer acquisition and marketing costs by launching in physical stores."
"They're very difficult to reimagine and what makes them truly successful long-term is the buy-in and support from the community and the city."
In May, The Capital-Journal reported Foster
Callanan and Maiden announced they chose architectural firms RDC and Hufft to focus on the mall's transformation
entertainment and restaurant components and Hufft for Advisors Excel's new headquarters
More: Two Topeka mental health organizations announced they will merge. What we know
"Then also our ability to find the highest and best use forward
having a grade design team and construction team in place to help navigate all of the challenges that comes with keeping them all open and operating while doing major transformational redevelopment," Maiden told The Capital-Journal
Each mall has its own unique story and it has its own unique value to that community
And to see the level of excitement for the Topeka market has been great."

BLOUNTVILLE — It has been a good week for West Ridge softball
West Ridge starting pitcher Caydence Spears
tripled and drove in two runs and the Wolves made a couple of stellar plays on defense to defeat David Crockett 3-2 on Friday evening on The Ridge
that is a good way to end it,” West Ridge head coach Eddie Spriggs said
“That is a good win against a good quality team right there
West Ridge (17-10) finished with four wins on the week
which has already claimed the top spot in the final Upper Lakes Conference standings
It was,” David Crockett head coach Alex Dulaney said
Tonight we did not execute the small things
Clark was been a key cog for the Wolves in their recent success and that continued against David Crockett starting pitcher Lily Mango
hitting a long home run over the left field fence in the second inning to put West Ridge up 1-0
“She has been hitting it pretty good all week,” Spriggs said
every time you turn around she is hitting a double or triple or off the fence or down the right field line
The sophomore slugger did it again in the deciding two-run fourth by slicing a pitch down the right field line to score starting southpaw pitcher Caydence Spears
Clark was sent home by Spriggs from third base in hopes of an inside-the-back home run
but was thrown out on a nifty play at the plate by the Pioneers
but I think I gave it to her a little bit too late
She was getting it right through here so there wasn’t any sense in slowing her down,” Spriggs said
“They hit the cutoff right there and that was a long throw
David Crockett had gone up 2-1 in the top of the fourth on a double by Lexi Hawkins
a wild pitch and ground ball out from Brylee Tullock
West Ridge came right back after Clark was retired with consecutive singles from Victoria Browder and Lily Frazier
The Pioneers brought in Madelyn Dulaney — one of the top pitchers in the area — to replace Mango at that point
but Teagan Tipton walked and Nila Horne followed with a sacrifice fly for what turned out to be the winning run
“We have some really good at-bats all week against a lot of good pitching
just kind of a different look and get her some work in
West Ridge turned defensive over the next three innings
including a rare 3-2-6 force play at second base in the fifth
and followed that in the sixth with runners on second and third and one out by turning a double play when a squeeze bunt attempt was caught by third baseman Lacey Fugate
who was able to double up the runner on at third with a throw to shortstop Natalie Moore
‘Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good,’” Spriggs said
“We have just been catching some breaks here and there
They had been kind of going against us in the first half of the year
We are getting some of those now so that is nice to be on that side of them.”
Alli Orrin singled and stole second in the top of the seventh for David Crockett
who replaced Spears in the circle prior to the double play
was able to get a strikeout and a line drive to Fugate at third to end the game
that is the frustrating part as a coach when you can’t get those executed...,” Alex Dulaney said
“West Ridge has had a great week and they had the momentum and they kept it the whole game.”
which has already clinched the top spot in the District 1-3A tournament in two weeks
will host Daniel Boone on Monday as the Pioneers try to prepare themselves for another postseason run
The Pioneers fell in the sectional round last year
Hopefully we are getting ready to go through a good postseason run
that is what we are trying to get ready for,” Alex Dulaney said
“We have got our conference play out of the way

German alpinist Jost Kobusch is currently in Nepal where he is making his third attempt at his long-term project
namely the first-ever winter solo ascent of Mount Everest
The 32-year-old is attempting the extremely ambitious feat via the Lho La col above the Khumbu icefall
the West Ridge and the narrow Hornbein Couloir on the steep north face of Everest
This route has never been climbed before in winter
On his first attempt in winter 2019/2020 Kobusch surprised many by reaching the West Shoulder at 7366m. After setting the bar extremely high, the following winter strong winds forced him to abandon his attempt at around 6500m. In winter 2022/2023 he made headline news by soloing the Messner Couloir on Denali in Alaska alone and in the coldest season
and this November he returned to the Himalayas for a third attempt at the highest mountain in the world
Kobusch arrived in Nepal in late November and after acclimatising on Mera Peak
he waited until the official start of winter
before starting his West Ridge of Everest attempt
Prior to setting off he stated that his main goal this year was to "go higher than 7500m and step further into the unknown" and on the 27th he achieved just this
pushed all the way up to 7537m before returning to his tent at 6800m and descending safely the next day
he stated that the route "worked well but is exposed to the strong winds."
Kobusch is currently resting and recovering from his forray and, seeing that in many respects he has already achieved this year's goal, it is unclear whether he will make a second attempt this season. Writing yesterday to German journalist Stefan Nestler on abenteuer-berg.de
Kobusch explained that due to his lack of acclimatisation
it would have been too dangerous to continue upwards. "Ultimately
I’m not interested in breaking any records in the short term
I want to achieve the project in the long term

KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett running back Tegan Begley had been listed as doubtful all week
The only doubt Friday night was whether or not he could be stopped
Begley rushed for two touchdowns and carried D-B to another win over its county rival Friday
as the Indians defeated West Ridge 42-13 at J
Having finished the Farragut game in a sling and missing last week’s contest with a shoulder injury
Begley knew deep down he’d be ready for Friday’s game
“I didn’t want to spoil anything,” Begley joked
He ran for 142 yards on 17 carries for the Indians (2-1
who still haven’t lost to a Sullivan County school since 1993
Begley took the handoff up the middle and dashed 53 yards to the end zone
“I’ve faced a lot of injures in my high school career
and this is the fourth game I’ve actually finished in my career,” Begley said
but I really wanted to play for my team and just get a win
Begley went 11 yards for a first down to begin both of Dobyns-Bennett’s first two drives
as Peyton Franklin took an inside handoff 28 yards to the house
Jaylen Thomas came within inches of scoring Dobyns-Bennett’s second touchdown
having caught a fade from Austin Sykes for a 42-yard gain
Begley took the direct snap and got the 1-yard score on the next play
but Thomas didn’t have to wait long for another opportunity after a 6-yard punt by West Ridge
After two straight facemask penalties against the Wolves (2-1
Thomas caught a quick pass from Sykes and sprinted 24 yards to the front-right pylon for a 21-0 halftime lead
“We have some guys who can stretch the field against certain guys
so we had the opportunity to throw it deep tonight,” D-B coach Joey Christian said
“We hadn’t really had the opportunity we thought we would to go deep with some of the coverages we saw the first two games
But tonight (the Wolves) were straight-up man
so we had to throw it deep and that’s what we did.”
Sykes drove the Tribe 67 yards to start the third quarter
finishing with a 7-yard screen pass to Franklin for a 28-0 advantage
The Indians answered West Ridge’s first score by going deep again
as Sykes hit Rome Pruitt on a vertical for a 36-yard score to make it 35-7
Sykes recovered after missing three open receivers behind the secondary on D-B’s opening drive
finishing 11-of-16 for 171 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 29 yards
Emmitt Starnes added 40 yards on four carries late
Ethan Amyx nearly cracked the century mark for West Ridge
Trey Frazier kept 11 times for 66 while hitting 7-of-19 passes for 77 yards
After Frazier hit Dylan Bannan for 29 yards
Amyx scored from the 5 to make it 28-7 in the fourth
Frazier then hit a wide-open Trent Tatum for a 22-yard touchdown and a 35-13 deficit
I’m going to take responsibility for us not being ready to go,” West Ridge coach Justin Hilton said
“Ethan’s getting big chunks (of yardage) early and penalties kept pulling us back
Frazier and Amyx found running room on West Ridge’s second possession
driving all the way to the Indians’ 21-yard line
But Thomas broke up Frazier’s pass on fourth-and-6
and Sykes’ 19-yard keeper sparked D-B’s ensuing 76-yard march
An 18-yard run by Amyx got West Ridge to D-B’s 34-yard line just before halftime
but Tyree Thomas stopped him for an 8-yard loss on the next play to help stall the drive
while D-B entertains defending Big East champion Jefferson County

Jost Kobusch has already met his expedition goal on his first push up the mountain
roughly the highest point ever reached on Everest’s West Ridge in winter
Before Kobusch, Vincent Fine and Benoit Chamoux of France also reached 7,500m on Everest’s West Ridge on Jan
This also marks the highest altitude Kobusch has reached on winter Everest during his three solo attempts
His previous highest point was 7,366m in 2021-22
The German had hoped to get a good look at the Hornbein Couloir from 7,500m
Kobusch reached his highest point when it was already dark — at 7pm Nepal time
He then turned around and retraced his steps through the night until he finally stopped for some hours at 6,700m
he has continued down and is currently at 6,000m
We expect more news after he rests at the col or returns to Base Camp
But he can already consider his expedition successful

In one of the best alpine-style climbs of the last few years
Tom Livingstone and Ales Cesen made the first ascent of the west ridge of 7,946m Gasherbrum III
Gasherbrum III lies in the Karakoram on the border between Pakistan and China
Different sources indicate its altitude as 7,952m or 7,958m
Gasherbrum III is not considered an independent mountain but a sub-peak of Gasherbrum II
It’s the world’s second-highest sub-peak
its difficulty makes it a rarely attempted climbing objective

It was first ascended by a Polish party on August 11

The Gasherbrum Base Camp of Tom Livingstone and Ales Cesen in 2022
Geoffrey Cohen from the Scottish Mountaineering Club led an expedition to to the southwest ridge of Gasherbrum III
because Cesen and Livingstone followed the same route in 2024
The Scottish team’s original objective was the north ridge of Gasherbrum III
and Des Rubens eventually decided on the long
The ridge rises from the top of the dangerous 800m icefall between Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum IV
bad weather forced them to return to base camp for a week
but Rubens and Cohen remade the trail to the upper cirque and embarked on the ridge on August 14
They bivouacked at 7,400m on a very exposed patch of snow
they left their bivouac gear behind and attempted to reach Gasherbrum III’s summit
near a horizontal step below the summit tower
but bad weather and strong winds compelled a retreat
So why did Livingstone and Cesen focus on this rarely attempted peak
“Gasherbrum III was the realization of a 10-year idea: to climb a technical
high-quality alpine route at about 8,000m,” Livingstone wrote
“I had always wondered if you could take the difficulty of the Alps
or the Canadian Rockies and supercharge them [with] altitude.”
Livingstone and Cesen during their 2022 Gasherbrum III expedition
Cesen first suggested Gasherbrum III to Livingstone in 2021
the duo wanted to attempt the peak via the west ridge
but strong winds convinced them to try the northwest face
where they were stopped by a rock tower about 100m high
It was too difficult to climb in tricky conditions and couldn’t be easily bypassed
According to their report in the American Alpine Journal
the forecast for the next two weeks was dire
Descending from 6,000m to Base Camp through a crevassed glacier at night
From Livingstone and Cesen’s 2022 expedition
This year, Livingstone and Cesen targeted the southwest ridge that the Scottish party had attempted in 1985. Cohen, who led that expedition, was very encouraging. He sent them an expedition report and photos and provided motivation, Livingstone said in an interview with UK Climbing.
Livingstone and Cesen had to walk 112km over six days up the Baltoro Glacier to reach Gasherbrum Base Camp at 5,000m
we had stunning views of the…Trangos
It was the first time either climber had returned to a mountain they had already attempted
from a bivy site at 7,600m on Gasherbrum III
Taken during Livingstone and Cesen’s 2022 attempt
Livingstone and Cesen made three trips up the normal route on Gasherbrum II over three weeks
They spent one night at 7,000m before returning to Base Camp
“We rested for a week and tried to find some useful drugs,” Livingstone wrote
the weather seemed unsettled but mostly fair
The two climbers decided to take a shot at Gasherbrum III
Livingstone and Cesen launched their summit push
they walked through an icefall and over some crevasses to reach Camp 1 at 6,000m
most teams head for the normal routes on Gasherbrum I and II
Livingstone and Cesen ascended from Camp 1 to the col between Gasherbrum IV and Gasherbrum III
While they were ascending from 7,100m to 7,500m
they found a rope left by the Scottish team in 1985
neatly coiled and under a few rocks,” Livingstone recalled
It featured rocky slabs and great mixed climbing
These pitches were surprisingly tricky.”
Tom Livingstone in an uncomfortable bivy at 7,500m
Livingstone and Cesen used rocks to make a small ledge for their bivy but soon hit ice underneath
there was a flattish platform about 30m below them
but either they were too tired or already a bit affected by the altitude because they didn’t go down to it
the duo spent an uncomfortable night on the ledge at 7,500m
They sat in an open bivy while getting snowed on
On reaching the summit
Livingstone recalled that they mostly felt fatigue and satisfaction: “I also remember the sense of isolation and exposure
Imagine going far out and then going a lot further.”
“I’m always a little anxious about [the descent],” Livingstone wrote later
“Being at that altitude with just a half rope is certainly cutting it a little fine.”
The two climbers descended the line used by the two other successful ascents of Gasherbrum III (the Polish 1975 expedition and the Spanish team in 2004)
they traversed to Gasherbrum II’s normal route and used its fixed ropes
which changed their style but made sense from a safety perspective
The difficult west ridge of Gasherbrum III
Livingstone and Cesen then walked 60km over several days to the nearest road
“We named the route Edge of Entropy because we were always on the edge…of chaos,” Livingstone said
“We would have still climbed even if nobody knew or cared about it
I’ve even been wondering if I should post anything on my Instagram
