One Houston-area city took the top slot on a new list of "the 100 Best Places to Live in 2025." The list — from relocation marketing platform Livability.com — put Sugar Land at No
3 for its appealing size and affordability
The list was restricted to small and mid-size cities with populations between 75,000-500,000 residents

Sugar Land ranked the highest for its health (89)

bolstered by its residents' entrepreneurial spirit when it comes to biotech

bird sanctuary visits and educational zoo programs—all animal related activities that would allow West University Place pets on parks
playgrounds and park facilities—are one step closer to being approved at city events after City Council looks to adopt a parks and recreation ordinance amendment
West University Place City Council approved the motion unanimously on its first reading April 14. However, ordinance changes in West U require two readings with City Council, among other requirements before an ordinance can take effect, according to Texas’ local government code.Council member Shannon Carroll said the decision was a great idea for pet owners
“I think we have a lot of residents who consider their puppies and their pets to be like their kids
and this gives them an opportunity to bring them out and feel like they are part of the community,” Carroll said
Adding certain exceptions to the animals in park rules comes after months of discussion between parks and recreation staff and board members. The members discussed allowing animals in the city’s parks for educational and recreational programming, according to agenda documents
Parks and Recreation Director Susan White said all pet-related activities would follow safety standards with staff
the city’s animal control department and police department to establish proper protocols
“We would have signage both in the brochure and also on the event side saying there’s pets and animals in the area,” White said
The ordinance’s proposed language states:
“Animals will be allowed to accompany a person during a city-sponsored
parks and recreation directory designated event
but only at the location and for the time of the event
The type of animal allowed will be indicated as part of the event.”
The areas indicated for animal/pet exceptions

Local and state leaders shared updated plans this month on a first-of-its-kind structure that uses art to generate solar energy
Slated to be located at Mason Park in Houston’s East End
the new "Arch of Time" is a freestanding sundial art installation that will generate 400,000 kilowatt-hours of power per year using 60,000 solar photovoltaic cells on its south-facing exterior
The project will be part of a larger pavilion at the park and is being led by the renewable energy organization Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI)
Architect Riccardo Mariano will design the space
It will be funded by donations and cost $20 million
The project, originally known as "Arco del Tiempo," was announced in 2023
the city shared the installation would be installed at Guadalupe Plaza Park in 2024
The project's latest update was announced during Houston City Hall’s Earth Day 2025
where organizers described it as "a monument to Houston's past
and future leadership as the energy capital of the world."
The 100-foot structure will also serve as a 25,000-square-foot shaded area, or microclimate, during hot days. It will also feature a stage performance space and a power hub for emergencies. Due to the artwork's north opening and south narrowing, it is also expected to help channel the breezes, according to LAGI.
The organization says it is also expected to generate enough power to fuel all of Mason Park
perhaps become the first major park in the country that is powered entirely by the sun,” Houston City Council Member Joaquin Martinez said at the news conference
Former Houston Park and Recreation director Joe Turner selected the East End park as the location of the arch and believes it could be used as a STEM tool for students
“All the STEM education that can come from the way we use the solar collectors, the way it has a water collection system that's going to collect the runoff water, there's so much we can do to teach kids STEM,” said in a Houston Park and Recreation Department video
The project is about two years away from being completed
LAGI says the Arch of Time will be the “first public art project of its scale to stand as a net-positive contribution to a sustainable climate.”

It's no secret that Houston's population is growing faster than most other metros in the U.S.
but now a surprising Houston-area neighbor has been named the No
1 fastest-growing suburb nationwide over the last decade: the booming city of Fulshear
Fulshear led the nation with an astonishing 1,082 percent increase in population from 2014 to 2023, according to a recent growth study by marketplace platform StorageCafe
Texas cities dominated StorageCafe's list of the top 10 fastest-growing U.S
The report said the city had nearly 27,000 residents in 2023, but now the U.S. Census Bureau estimates Fulshear's population has now grown to more than 42,600 people
"With its blend of a relaxed lifestyle
top-rated schools and strong job opportunities
Fulshear consistently ranks among the best places to live in Texas," the report's author wrote
Several other Houston-area suburbs also saw major growth over the last decade
"Manvel doubled its population between 2014 and 2023
while Katy and Conroe each recorded increases of over 50 percent," the report said
aligning with the average growth rate for large U.S
The report added that the Houston area's population surge has also led to a high demand for housing
where home values have risen 60 percent over the last 10 years
Home prices in Fulshear stood at more than $521,000 in November 2024
whereas Manvel's home prices were over $431,000 during that same period
the national average price of a home is $354,000
Katy and Conroe had the most affordable home prices out of the four Houston suburbs in the report
StorageCafe says the reasons for population shifts vary greatly
with many people seeking out cities with a more affordable cost of living
or those moving for socioeconomic factors like better employment opportunities
"Population growth is far from even across the U.S
Some cities are experiencing significant increases
rising immigration and birth rates outpacing death rates," the report said
"But what’s fueling these trends runs deeper — economic and social forces like shifting job markets
the rise of remote and hybrid work and soaring living costs are all reshaping where people choose to live."
Other fast-growing Texas citiesTexas had the greatest number of cities to earn spots in the report's ranking of the 100 fastest-growing U.S
with 25 total cities making the cut with the highest growth rates nationwide
Dallas-Fort Worth had the highest number of fastest-growing Texas suburbs on the list
Austin had five suburbs land on the list: Manor (No
San Antonio also had five suburbs make the top 100
