Volunteer for DuPage River Sweep Wife Moira and two adult children, five grandchildren I continue to strive for more transparency in local government. It is important that the residents of Westmont have a voice in their local government. I am reachable by phone or email and will always take time to help our residents. Public Safety and Infrastructure maintenance is crucial to a better Westmont and needs to be supported. Additionally, Westmont needs to compete for economic development so that there can be added revenue to hold down the financial burden on our residents. I feel that we need to develop a long term plan that sets up a solid direction for continued progress. I know that Westmont has a lot of excellent caring staff persons but there is more work to do that can set a course for lasting improvements. 1. Long Range Economic and Infrastructure plans- As a trustee I would continue to enable or newly reorganized Community Development Department to make real progress in development that brings business to Westmont. In turn this development through property taxes and sales tax will help reduce the financial burden on residents. 2. I would support and positively challenge Steve Nero as our new Mayor. It is my opinion that Steve is going to be a GREAT mayor. 3. I want to see more opportunities for resident input on major decisions and foster an increased line of communication between residents and local government. I would like to see a neighborhood watch program village wide. I advocate for better pavement markings at busy intersections and safe routes to school. I would also like to see more mutual aide and regional cooperation so that the area police and fire have the best communication and equipment available to them. I support our paramedics, fire and police and I am proud of the work they do. Westmont has many rental properties and a fair amount of lower priced homes in DuPage county. As a village we need to be open to the possible future development of this type of housing however it is costly to build in an area that is not vacant unused land. I do support everything necessary to continue the success of the Mayslake Community on the far north end of town. I have continued to work with committees that engage residents. I also volunteer with area residents at community events, environmental programs and educational opportunities. I advocate that people continue to reach-out to local officials, staff and get involved with their community. To me this is the best way to know what is going on and it is also very rewarding to serve others. For years I have told people to just call! Yes, this has been done on many occasions during village board meetings. Trustees have abstained from voting on topics that conflict with their personal life. They are also required to file a form with the county stating any economic overlap between public and private business. The Village Attorney has been a good resource in determining what is a appropriate action in local governement. I provide my email and phone number so that I am always reachable by our residents. I pride myself on the fact that I will always call you back. In my employment, I seek opportunities to volunteer by undertaking special projects and additional training. These initiatives have facilitated my professional success through networking with leaders and colleagues, which has led to leadership positions. Similarly, these efforts have positively impacted my personal life. Although I have encountered politics in both my personal and professional life, I have not yet participated in politics at a level where one is elected by the general population. My experience and accomplishments in various aspects of my life position me as a qualified candidate for the village board. Overall, I am satisfied with the current state of the village and the direction it is heading. I am equally pleased that the mayor and the village board appear to be working collaboratively towards common goals. While there are no particular controversies compelling me to run, Westmont still faces challenges and opportunities for improvement. The residents and business owners have invested their life savings into this community. Without them, the village cannot succeed. Our leadership must remember that they serve those who make these investments. They need to be more accessible, customer-friendly, understanding, flexible, and consistent in their enforcement practices. I acknowledge that there may be exaggerations and misconceptions in some of these concerns. However, it is the village’s responsibility to address and rectify these perceptions. Failing to respond openly and honestly to constituents only fosters distrust and further rumors and negativity. As a village board member, I will continue to support the positive direction in which the current board and village are moving, while also advocating for the residents and business owners as I have always done. Our community faces criticism in communication, transparency, and customer friendliness. Some methods that we use are archaic and need to be brought into the present. The Village Board must be accessible to voters and respond to queries, even if they cannot provide specific answers. Board members should act as advocates, updating constituents on relevant matters. Westmont lacks technological tools that ease the permit application process. Unlike nearby towns, we still require physical submission of forms, which could be streamlined online for convenience. This allows convenience for the residents, and therefore, a willingness to be more user friendly. There’s also a hesitance to use social media for public engagement. Social media is an effective communication tool, yet Westmont residents must seek out information independently. Proactive, transparent use of social media can build trust and keep residents informed. Our downtown is experiencing improvements. The Quincy Station complex has brought new residents to our downtown, which will positively impact existing businesses. The improvements made along the new Quincy Street development are a significant enhancement to downtown and are noticeable by commuters passing through. Future developments at Burlington are anticipated to have a similar positive impact as Quincy Street. It is important to continue progressing with projects that improve our infrastructure and create opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with diverse restaurants and shopping options. Increased foot traffic may necessitate considerations for parking and traffic management. Supporting existing businesses while attracting new ones is essential. Westmont should explore creative marketing strategies to position itself as an attractive location for businesses. Embracing digital marketing and social media can highlight why business owners might choose Westmont for their investments. The developments on 63rd and Cass are commendable, but attention is needed for the underutilized corridor to the immediate north. Attracting larger retail anchors could help retain tax revenues within Westmont. It is important to introduce businesses that foster healthy competition without oversaturating the market. Incentives for businesses should be maximized. Exploring additional tax incentives, grants, and temporary rent reductions could support business growth. An emphasis on finding solutions rather than focusing on potential obstacles is key. Transparency in village board communications is crucial. Information should be shared proactively rather than on a “need to know” basis. While there are ways for the public to sign up for updates, more efforts should be made to ensure information is freely disseminated. Public engagement on significant projects is necessary. Proactively reaching out to residents through surveys and notifications about proposals can gather valuable feedback and foster a sense of inclusion. Decisions in the town are made by a small group of individuals; sharing information broadly and seeking public input can enhance community involvement. Additionally, Village Trustees should actively seek feedback from the public and provide avenues for direct response. Improvements to Quincy Avenue have created a corridor for train commuters. The outdoor dining areas will attract those commuting through Westmont to and from Chicago. These changes should extend to the north side, near Burlington. With new developments on Cass and Burlington, it is important to consider their impact on traffic patterns and density in the downtown area. While following the comprehensive plan to boost economic development, there is a need to address the resulting congestion, traffic, and parking challenges. It is necessary to balance these changes with proactive solutions to avoid additional difficulties for businesses and residents. Westmont has made significant progress in economic development. However, there are still empty storefronts, buildings requiring improvements, downtown infrastructure that needs to be added, and large areas such as the land directly north of 63rd and Cass that need development. Westmont should continue to attract companies that enhance competitiveness and bring in larger tax revenue. Supporting businesses beyond their initial opening is essential. Finding innovative ways to promote them is necessary. There are instances where code enforcement affects business promotions. Special permissions should be considered for businesses running promotions or grand openings. Requests for special temporary signage or visual window promotions should be granted. Code enforcement must be consistent, ensuring all businesses are held to the same standards. One of the reasons that I picked Westmont as home was the sense of community, its size, and the sense of safety. However, we have learned in the not so far past that the most unspeakable things have happened in the most unexpected places. Regardless of how I looked at Westmont, it does not protect us from the unexpected. At this current time, I feel that Westmont Police Department is doing more than satisfactory job of keeping our village safe. They make a special effort to weave themselves into our schools, our town events and celebrations, and host open houses to reach out to the public. They are just not employees, but they are members of our community. We must not keep our guard down. We must always monitor what is happening in our community, as well as our surrounding areas. It is the responsibility of the local government to find ways to prevent crime. The village should collaborate with the local police to create the safety protocols. Successful partnerships require strategic planning from the village leaders. To prevent crime, we have to find ways to identify reasons as certain crimes arise. Response and violence intervention teams should be organized, and a special effort to engage and inform the public should be made to have them be aware and alert of these crimes. Keeping the public aware of what is happening by being upfront and transparent makes them responsible to be alert and engaged, which further keeps us all safe. Westmont was built by the middle class, and it should continue to provide ample opportunities to accommodate them. Westmont thrives as a small town embracing diverse cultures. Our award-winning schools are filled with students from various backgrounds, our restaurants offer global cuisines, and our businesses provide a variety of goods and services for all consumers. There are ample opportunities for everyone to succeed in Westmont. However, we need more affordable housing to balance the needs of higher and middle-class residents. Promoting Westmont as a hub of inclusivity is essential. We should celebrate our mix of cultures more actively. For instance, while the Taiwan culture center is a significant addition, it isn’t promoted enough. Community events should focus on cultural celebrations. Inclusiveness spans beyond races or cultures to different segments of people. It’s encouraging to see young leaders in our village, but our leadership, first responders, and services should better represent our community. This might result from insufficient promotion rather than a lack of processes. Westmont’s rich diversity deserves celebration and promotion. Those who vote for me will have complete access. I will respond to every inquiry and provide follow-up even if I do not have an immediate answer. – Night one of the TYR Pro Swim Series Westmont kicked off with 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championship teammates Aiden Hammer (Fox Island Wa./King Aquatic Club) and Luka Mijatovic (Pleasanton Calif./Pleasanton Seahawks) going one-two in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle touching out Mijatovic (15:16.31) by less than a second Ind./Fishers Area Swimming Tigers) touched third at 15:23.53.  Women’s 1500m Freestyle – FINAL   Men’s 1500m Freestyle – FINAL   Hammer on his race: “It felt pretty good I didn’t know I was capable of that (time) and I followed the race plan my coach provided and descended it each 500 Hammer on swimming against 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships teammate Luka Mijatovic: “It was the best feeling ever Training over the last summer with him was the best standing here now reminds me of training with him at the (Olympic Training Center) and pushing each other in the last lengths of it I’m happy to be able to race him.”  Pa (WJAC) — A Westmont Hilltop freshman is now a state champion Rylee Kohan captured gold in the 50-yard freestyle at the PIAA Class 2A swimming championships But her victory came among a "wave of emotions" for her and the Westmont Hilltop community Rylee Kohan put on quite a performance at Bucknell University shaving nearly a full second off her preliminary time to clock in at 23.22 seconds but she also broke a program record that had stood since 1999 Kohan’s journey in the pool began at just four years old thanks to a coach who saw potential in her suffered a stroke just hours before she competed in her second event and facing disappointment when her relay team was disqualified To see your child succeed at that level is amazing We always said our goals are whatever her goals are we are going to support her and make it happen for her,” her mother said dropping time and pushing her limits as she builds on an already remarkable season Kohan has already achieved quite the accomplishment Regan Smith swam her fastest-ever time outside of either Trials or the Olympics to blow away the field on the final night in Fort Lauderdale We saw Michael Andrew in action at the Westmont Pro Swim Pouch finished 2nd in the 100 & 200 breast and 6th in the 50 breast at this year’s first stop of the Pro Swim Series Olympian Rhyan White raced at the 2025 Wesmont Pro Swim saying she’s still seeing improvements and learning ways to upgrade as an athlete High School senior and Indiana commit Josh Bey took the win in the men’s 200 breast at the Pro Swim Series stop in Westmont Summer McIntosh set a new US Open record in the 400 IM while in Westmont She also swam to wins in the 200 fly and 200 IM Katharine Berkoff was in action at the Pro Swim Series stop in Westmont this weekend March 08th, 2025 International, National, News, Previews & Recaps, Pro Swim Series Day 4 Finals Heat Sheet We have made it to the final day of the Westmont Pro Swim Series and we are in for an exciting night of swimming Tonight’s events are streaming live on the USA Swimming Network Summer McIntosh has been leading the women’s side of the meet and a US Open record in last night’s 400 IM final she is the top seed in the women’s 200 IM and a number of records are in danger tonight Regan Smith has the top seed in two events this evening, the 100 fly and the 100 back, which she holds the World Record in. Her final time of 2:07.42 was three seconds ahead of Mary-Sophie Harvey‘s 2:11.53 in 2nd McIntosh was under World Record pace at the 100 but she was not able to match Katinka Hosszu’s 36.70 on the breaststroke split and fell off the pace going into the freestyle She was just over her own PSS record of 2:07.16 from January of last year Mary-Sophie Harvey finished 2nd about a second ahead of Isabel Ivey’s 2:12.67 in 3rd Carson Foster completed his sweep of the IM events winning the 200 IM in 1:57.04 a little over a second-and-a-half ahead of Grant House in 2nd but quickly jumped into 1st with the fastest back and breast splits in the field at 29.44 and 33.92 respectively He also had the fastest freestyle leg at 28.53 one-hundredth ahead of Grant House’s 28.54 Michael Andrew finished 3rd in 2:01.69 about a second ahead of 4th place finisher Bereke Saka Kate Douglass was the 3rd swimmer to go 2-for 2 tonight winning the women’s 50 freestyle in 24.62 just one-hundredth of a second over Australia’s Meg Harris in 24.63 Douglass’ best time in the event is 23.91 from the World Championships last February Harris finished 13-hundredths ahead of Kasia Wasick in 3rd at 24.63 seven tenths behind her best time of 23.97 from the Games last year Wasick’s best time is 23.95 also from the World Championships in February of 2024 Simone Manuel finished 4th, five-hundredths out of medal position in 24.79 and three tenths ahead of 15-year-old Rylee Erisman in 5th Penny Oleksiak won the ‘B’ final in 25.17 which would have finished 6th in the ‘A’ final Mikel Schrueders won his 2nd event of the meet in the men’s 50 freestyle, swimming 22.13 to finish a little more than a tenth ahead of teammate Jack Dolan‘s 22.27 Schrueders has been 21.93 in the event and Dolan’s best is 22.07 from the Olympic Trials in June Yuri Kisil rounded out the podium in 22.50, just five-hundredths ahead of Shane Eckler’s 22.55 for 4th. Robin Yeboah in 5th was just two-hundredths behind Eckler at 22.57 Michael Andrew swam the final just seven minutes after his 200 IM final This was the slowest swim in all three finals heats Laon Kim in the ‘B’ final almost missed his event and had to run from the opposite side of the pool to make it to the blocks in time with even less time between his race than Andrew So did Grant House who also made the 50 free ‘B’ final Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_2" ).setAttribute( "value" Why does she sound so uncertain about where she’s going to train next given that she’s already told us she’s going to visit bob bowman and he’s the logical choice Is it possible that Bowman agrees to let her train temporarily but said he won’t represent her in 2028 because he wants to be a US coach in LA And so she wants to train with Bowman but is also keeping her eye out for a longer term option She may not want to confirm that without a statement from Bob And in Devin Heroux’s articles he said that Bob can’t comment right now due to strict NCAA recruiting rules (we all know that Summer has said she isn’t doing NCAA but Bob wanted to be extra careful) I don’t know what would be the trigger that would allow Bob to comment likely she doesn’t know where she’s going to train next She said she wants to train with a pro group and do university studies It’s not a surprise she’s leaving Sarasota because she has trained with a small group of good friends who are all transferring to NCAA I can just imagine a coach telling 18 year old Summer McIntosh yeah you can stick around for a while but I’ve got better things to do I can imagine a coach who admittedly prioritizes the 400 individual medley taking one look at 4:24 accomplished via age group caliber turns and underwaters and doing mental subtraction toward 4:20 range Off topic but there’s finally a page for Worlds Tickets. He was the only man in the field out sub-23 to the feet, as Sun Devil pro Mikel Schreuders turned at 23.04 Casas split 25.47 on his second 50 meters and hit the wall in 48.31 but the swim isn’t too far from his lifetime best which stands at 48.23 from the 2022 Austin Sectionals Grant House split a field-best 25.23 on the back half of the race to pick up the silver medal in 48.50 undercutting the 48.63 he swam at the Speedo Summer Championships this past July The Sun Devils put two swimmers on the podium as Schreuders held on for third place with a 48.65 He rounded out the swimmers under 49 seconds in the final It’s been the same story through the first three championship finals of the night as the winner has led the race from start-to-finish. This time, it was Kate Douglass who was in full control of the women’s 100 breaststroke in her first meet of the new season splitting a field-best 35.31 on the second half to extend her lead less than two-tenths from the lifetime best she swam at a club meet last May King held off Bottazzo’s 35.60 closing split getting her hands on the wall for silver in 1:07.13 to Bottazzo’s 1:07.32 Bottazzo wasn’t too far from her lifetime best (1:07.17) either Michael Andrew defended his top seed and took the win in the men’s 100 breaststroke. It was another Michael, Michael Houlie who led the race around at the turn; he pushed the pace early He led by .58 seconds at the halfway point But Andrew reeled him in over the final 50 meters Andrew didn’t have the fastest back half in the field as he did this morning but he did still press on that part of the race It was AJ Pouch who had the fastest back half in the championship final splitting 32.39 to move from fifth at the turn to silver at the final touch He finished .39 seconds behind Andrew with a 1:01.24 Kylie Masse held the top seed in the women’s 50 backstroke after a prelims swim of 27.48 She was quicker than that time to defend her seed and pick up gold in Westmont The sprint-minded Berkoff grabbed silver with a 27.63 getting her hand on the wall four-hundredths ahead of Wilm’s 27.67 who’s taking on a 50 backstroke/200 butterfly double Shaine Casas dominated the men’s 50 backstroke final on the back half of his double He won the men’s 100 freestyle at the start of the session and was once again not far from his lifetime best to win the men’s 50 backstroke winning the race by a whopping .87 seconds Andrew completed his double by adding a silver medal to his Westmont haul with a 25.10 Tommy Janton is racing in his first meet since the U.S touching ahead of Jack Dolan‘s 25.47 This morning, Summer McIntosh shot to the top of the season’s world rankings in the 200 butterfly with a 2:06.40 which would’ve finished 4th at the Paris Olympics She improved her world-leading time in tonight’s final She chopped eight-tenths off Smith’s record from last season and nearly took down Smith’s U.S which McIntosh’s swim this evening missed by .13 seconds splitting 27.54/31.76/32.21/32.49 en route to gold As we’re accustomed to seeing, Trenton Julian leapt out to the lead in the championship final of the men’s 200 butterfly jumping out to a .59-second lead over Patrick Beaton Julian continued to lead at the 100- (54.47) and 150-meter mark (1:24.58) Julian split 31.44 on the final 50 meters and was too far ahead for Jack Dahlgren‘s 31.06 final 50 split to run down entering the top five in the world this season Mary-Sophie Harvey flexed her freestyle range this evening finishing fourth in the 100 and then winning the 400 Harvey stayed near the front of the pack on the first half of the race following the Brazilians Maria Fernanda Costa and Gabriele Roncatto Goncalves who both led during the first half of the race Harvey began to make her move after the 250-meter turn splitting 31.74 to move into a tie for second place She held onto second by herself at the final turn and dug in with a 29.55 split on the final 50 Her closing speed pushed her to the win in a final time of 4:08.67 Roncatto Goncalves finished second in 4:09.01 The two were the only swimmers to break 4:10 as Costa made it two Brazilian swimmers on the podium with a 4:11.67 There were many swimmers completing doubles in this championship final. Top seed Madi Mintenko and Vivien Jackl were also doing doubles along with Harvey Mintenko swam the 100 freestyle while Jackl did the 200 fly Short continued to lead for the entire race flipping at the halfway mark in 1:49.93 and going on to clock a 3:44.55 in his first final since the Olympic Games Short joked after the race that his coach had agreed to go bald if he broke the U.S which Larsen Jensen has held at 3:43.53 since 2008 Short was off that pace tonight but it seems like he’ll get another shot at it as he also said he would be at the Sacramento Pro Series as well there was a close finish between Costa and Foster Costa was running second for the first half of the race Foster pulled into a narrow lead (six-hundredths) at the 300-meter mark He extended that lead to .32 seconds at the wall clocking 3:46.42 for silver to Costa’s 3:46.74 15-year-old Luka Mijatovic reset his 15-16 National Age Group record for fourth-place lowering the mark from the 3:49.24 he swam at the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships Mijatovic is a great swimmer and one of the best long distance freestyle teenagers of all time which is fair given just how stupid fast he was at the same age it’s nice to see someone like Mijatovic who is at least comparable to Thorpe in their teen years Both MA and Trenton Julian not dying in their races – what is going on?!? >15-year-old Luka Mijatovic reset his 15-16 National Age Group record for fourth-place Luca is lauded as the new wunderkind and teen phenom 15 yo Thorpe in speedo briefs swam 3:46.29 twenty seven years ago to win 400 free gold at 1998 World Championship The only male swimmer ever to medal in 100-200-400 free in a single Olympics His 2001 World Championship results is comparable to Phelps 2007-2008 and Ledecky 2015-2016: And that wasn’t even Thorpe’s fastest time at 15 years old Thorpe went 3:44.35 still at 15 years old at the Comm Games in 1998 Mijatovic is stupid fast for his age and still Thorpe was able to swim 4.5 seconds faster at this age “But Andrew reeled him in over the final 50 meters.” Had to read that like 4 times to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating Summer McIntosh could have gone 1:59 and it still wouldn’t have been as crazy as what I just read about MA Can’t believe we still have certified lover boy winning the 2 fly at pro swim series not the first time ive noticed this w rylee but its kinda striking how weak her starts even her stroke looks kinda choppy at certain points of the race but somehow shes still so fast over the water the way she closed on simone was scary… no ones progression is linear but i have to say i think its really over for a lot of your faves when she gets stronger and cleans that stuff up… yeah that 53.7 from last summer as a 15 y/o is elite i do not know how to find the fastest 15 y/o ever Missy was 53.63 and Cate Campbell was 53.30 I believe CC is the fastest 15 year old ever but not sure if theres anyone else faster than Rylee so I went to the Canadian all-time lists and she was actually 53.31 as a 15-year old Fastest ever is Cate Campbell 53.30 which she swam in early 2008 Santa Clara to beat peak Nathalie Coughlin which was US open record for 10 years until Sjostrom broke it in 2017 Still the smoothest 100 inked in my memory I remember Cate leading 4×100 free final in 2013 Barcelona She was so smooth she looked liked was not speeding they looked like standing still relative to her even when they were splashing around I’m not sure the super suits helped people with her body type that much tbh it’s hard to fully suss out because of lack of data but the suits did not help everyone the same The rest of her career clearly showed she didn’t need the suit to be fast either she was a 52.03 as a 25 year old in current style tech suit I really was just trying to remember if she was in an LZR for that or not as I couldn’t find video in my quick search It was truly a wonderful generational battle And even if she was wearing a suit from the front end of the supersuit era it remained the US Open mark for a decade; and it remained faster than anyone did in America for the remainder of the suit period Yeah that 53.7 last summer as a 15 y/o is elite I am not sure how to find the fastest ever 15y/o in the 100 free I cant remember if there was something posted on here about it at the time she joined her local club team because her best friend convinced her it would be fun Shoulder surgery ended her competitive swimming days long ago More from Sophie KaufmanSee All March 07th, 2025 National, News, Previews & Recaps, Pro Swim Series Day 3 Prelims Heat Sheets Welcome to the third day of action in Westmont at the 2025 TYR Pro Swim Series It’s sure to be another action packed day and the stage for finals will be set in prelims with heats of the 200 freestyle There were just three heats of the women’s 200 freestyle this morning, meaning there was no time wasted getting to the circle-seeded action. The first heat of the day featured Olympic gold medallist Simone Manuel Manuel told SwimSwam after that race that since getting back into training after an extended break from the pool she’s been training the 200 freestyle She took the win in the opening heat, setting the bar at 1:59.71 as she held off a late push from Virginia commit Madi Mintenko After placing second to Manuel in the 100 freestyle, 15-year-old Rylee Erisman got off to a hot start in the 200 freestyle improving on the 1:59.63 she swam at Futures last summer Erisman’s time held up as the fastest of the morning through the final heat. Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey won the final heat with a 1:58.92, pulling away from Izzy Ivey to get her hand on the wall She’s the second-fastest qualifer for tonight’s final and Manuel were the three women to break 2:00 in prelims Ivey neared the barrier with a 2:00.20 and will look to dip under tonight Maria Fernanda Costa and Gabriele Roncatto Goncalves finished on the 400 freestyle podium last night and both return to the ‘A’ final for the 200 freestyle Sam Short last night’s 400 freestyle winner in the 400 freestyle won the first circle-seeded heat in 1:48.29 That time stood up over the final two heats as the fastest time of the morning and 1500 freestyle at the 2023 World Championships Short is well-known for his distance speed but he can drop down to the 200 freestyle when he wants His first senior World Championship medal was as part of Australia’s 4×200 freestyle relay team Luka Mijatovic also had a strong 400 freestyle last night finishing fourth in a new 15-16 National Age Group record He’s claimed lane five for tonight’s 200 freestyle final He’s within a second of his lifetime best of 1:47.96 which he swam at the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships Shaine Casas is set for the 200 freestyle/200 backstroke double today He won both his events last night and will look to keep that streak rolling tonight while Short’s Australian Olympic teammate Max Giuliani clocked 1:49.48 to move through in seventh It’s the veteran and American record holder Lilly King who leads the way into the women’s 50 breaststroke championship final tonight King won the third and final heat with a 31.24 The final should be a close race between King, Anna Elendt, and Kate Douglass Elendt owns a lifetime best of 30.10 from the Barcelone stop of the Mare Nostrum tour in 2022 We don’t often get to see Douglass take on sprint breaststroke in the long-course meters pool Her registered lifetime best on SwimCloud is a 31.66 from the first 50 meters of her 100 breaststroke swim at the 2023 Speedo Atlanta Classic her sprint breaststroke is clearly feeling good as she logged a lifetime best in this event with a 31.32 to qualify third she neared her lifetime best to win the 100 breaststroke as well Florida’s Anita Bottazzo could also get in on the race for gold tonight after a 31.44 in prelims The men’s 50 breaststroke prelims were another three heat event this morning, and once again portend a close race in the final. After prelims, it’s Mikel Schreuders who owns the fastest swim of the day with the 27.41 he swam to win the final heat That swim from Schreuders stopped the clock a hundredths ahead of Michael Houlie‘s 27.42 from the prior heat Houlie will be one to watch tonight–he pressed the gas early during last night’s 100 breaststroke final jumping out to a huge lead before getting reeled back in down the stretch Speaking of the 100 breaststroke, last night’s winner, Michael Andrew will aim for a sprint breaststroke sweep tonight He’s two-tenths back from Schreuders and clearly within striking distance As the three men sub-28 seconds this morning the win tonight seems like it will come from one of those swimmers but they’ll need to shave a lot of time from their morning swim will have a hometown athlete to cheer for in this heat as Garrett Clasen swam 28.04 to qualify fifth for the final He won bronze in the 100 breaststroke last night with a 1:01.58 Many of the women who qualified for tonight 50 butterfly championship final are taking on doubles today who qualified third for the 50 breaststroke ‘A’ final in the last event Douglass’ registered lifetime best in the 50 butterfly coming into Westmont was a first 50 split this swim marks her second lifetime best of the day Douglass swam the fastest qualifying time by .16 seconds, touching the wall ahead of Australia’s Lily Price, who won heat three in 26.28. Behind Price in heat three, Manuel and Penny Oleksiak tied with a 26.82 which moves them through to the final in third overall (Does anyone remember if they’ve ever tied for anything before?) Beata Nelson earned the win in the penultimate heat with a 26.83 Kylie Masse is having some fun with her events in Westmont She’ll aim to pick up her second stroke 50 win of the meet after making it through to the championship final in 27.03 Singapore’s Mikkel Lee is the top qualifier for the men’s 50 butterfly championship final which held strong at the top of the rankings for the rest of the event who just helped the Indiana men win their fourth straight Big Ten Championship was .15 seconds from his lifetime best with his morning swim Sun Devil training partners Schreduers and Andrew are both aiming to sweep the day’s stroke 50s Schreduers put himself in a strong position to do that qualifying first for the 50 breaststroke and second for the 50 butterfly He’s got some ground to make up on Lee in tonight’s final though as he’s .25 seconds behind Lee after a 23.83 in prelims Andrew is further back in fourth with a 23.96 but still qualified easily for the final as he aims to add at least one more event to his win column at the meet Argentina’s Ulises Cazau sits between the Sun Devils after a 23.88 in prelims The top four swimmers were all under 24 seconds with Robin Yeboah nearing that standard with a 24.03 for fifth After winning heat two of the women’s 200 backstroke, Rhyan White heads into the final as the top qualifier Olympic Trials but this is her first time racing long-course meters since Indianapolis 16-year-old Madison Kryger tracked her closely in that second heat but the Canadian couldn’t quite get ahead of White She’s seeded a strong second heading into tonight’s final with a second separating her and the third fastest qualifier Teagan O’Dell (2:12.96) Kryger hit her entry time exactly with a 2:11.96 In the final heat, Olympic medalist Katharine Berkoff pushed the pace on the opening 100, turning in 1:04.05, over a second ahead of American record holder Regan Smith It looks like Berkoff swam the 200 backstroke for a split at a club meet in the spring of 2023 but otherwise hasn’t taken on this event since the 2021 U.S She still held a lead of about a second on Smith at the final turn who didn’t exert any more energy than she needed to on the second swim of her double calmly pulled even with her Olympic teammate and got her at the touch Both qualified for the ‘A’ final There wasn’t much suspense to the men’s 200 backstroke prelims as there were only three heats Tommy Janton continued to look solid in Westmont at his first meet racing since his strong outing at the U.S He placed third in the 50 backstroke yesterday and is now the top seed heading into the finals with a 2:00.23 As with many of this morning’s events, having two heats in prelims has created an interesting scenario where there’s a big margin between the top seed and the eighth-place qualifier but the top swimmers didn’t need to show their cards at all this morning. For example, Shaine Casas qualified sixth this morning with a 2:03.34 but didn’t need to work very hard to make the top eight and will be a threat to win the event this evening The gap between first and second is 1.21 seconds as Jack Dolan won the first heat in a 2:01.44 that’s just nine-hundredths from his lifetime best After a morning filled with three-heat events we’ve reached a new level in the women’s and men’s 400 IMs Reigning Olympic champion and world record holder Summer McIntosh cruised to a 4:43.48 in the second heat of the event easily swimming the fastest time of the morning Canada has the top two qualifiers in the event as Harvey followed McIntosh in heat two with a 4:48.06 Harvey also made the 200 freestyle ‘A’ final earlier in the session It was Hungary’s Vivien Jackl who won the first heat of the event posting a 4:52.73 that held up for the third-fastest time of the morning Jackl also swam the 200 freestyle earlier this morning She swam the 200 butterfly/400 freestyle double during finals last night After McIntosh easily took the top seed in the women’s 400 IM it was Carson Foster‘s turn to sail to the top time of the morning in the men’s 400 IM which puts him 9.03-seconds ahead of second-fastest qualifier Misa Lyubavskiy Lyubavskiy swam 4:27.28 which puts him over a second ahead of Jon Joentvedt Oleksiak and Manuel tying to the hundredth in an event Surprised to see Lee here from IU – would’ve thought he’d be gearing up for NCAA’s…any other active college names I missed 2 Canadians coming back from injuries…Penny Oleksiak and Cole Pratt..looks like they’re making progress…still a ways to go They’ve got an interesting group down there I think they’ve Added Santo Condoreli & Kristian Gkolomeev recently with which he was seeded into the event at the Wave II Olympic Trials in 2021 summer’s best time in the 400 IM would’ve qualified her second this morning I think it’s worth mentioning Ledecky has been doing that for years. but I hope he opts for 2 free & 2 back at at least one of the events this Spring McIntosh went 1:10 in the freestyle of the 4IM ahaha Pa (WJAC) — Authorities say a Cambria County cafeteria worker is facing charges after illegal drugs allegedly fell out of his pocket at a local elementary school crack cocaine reportedly fell out of 32-year-old Michael Barry’s pocket as he was working at Westmont Hilltop Elementary School walked by the drugs as they laid in the hallway of the school’s cafeteria Officials with Westmont Hilltop released a statement clarifying that Barry was an employee of Metz Culinary Management Company which provides food services for the district “We want to assure our community that the safety of our students is a top priority We commend the rapid response of our school police officer and the cooperation of Metz Culinary personnel in addressing this incident," said Superintendent Thomas Mitchell Officials added that Barry has since been terminated by his employer "This is a concerning and rare incident involving one of our employees and we have zero tolerance for such incidents We worked closely with the school police officer to address the matter and we will continue to enforce rigorous policies that prohibit illegal substances in the workplace we will review all protocols to ensure this type of incident does not happen again," said Metz Culinary representative Brian Bufalino According to online court records Barry is charged with misdemeanors for drug and paraphernalia possession A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 22nd
