A Cincinnati police officer shot and killed an armed person who fled from a stolen car in East Price Hill May 1
At a news conference following the shooting
Theetge said officers with the department's fugitive apprehension team learned a stolen car was in the parking lot of the Westview Condominums
Radio traffic indicates officers arrived at the 2500 block of Warsaw Avenue around 9:30 a.m
when they encountered four people in the car
Theetge said the four people ran from the car and did not comply with the officers' commands to stop
Radio traffic indicates "three fled into the woods," and Theetge said the fourth person was shot by police
"At least one of them was armed with a firearm
Several officers gave chase," Theetge said
"One officer discharged his firearm toward the individual who had a firearm."
She said it is still too early in the investigation to discuss whether the person raised his gun or attempted to fire at officers
Theetge said two of the other three people were apprehended after a "lengthy" search involving K9s and drones
The department said it would release more information
including a description of the suspect at large
Cincinnati's police union released a statement saying the person "pulled a semiautomatic handgun and pointed it at police."
"Police officers around the country are trained to defend their lives and use deadly force when a suspect points a gun at them," police union president Ken Kober said
"When no officer wants to be forced to use deadly force
every Cincinnati police officer wants to make it home to their families."
The department did not release the name of the officer who shot the person in East Price Hill
For years, the department would release the names and information about officers involved. However, in recent months, the department has been withholding that information, citing Marsy's Law, legislation meant to protect victims of crimes
OK – The 2025 Westview Festival at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) featured award-winning fantasy author and Oklahoma native David R

West Kelowna’s Julia’s Junction playground is closed for repairs until May 16
The City of West Kelowna says the warranty-related work will repair the rubber ground surface
The work was originally expected to start later in May
but the city was able to obtain an earlier time
and took the opportunity in the hopes that the work could be completed before the May long weekend
The playground has been very popular since opening in July 2023 after a community-wide fundraising effort
“The City of West Kelowna is unable to temporarily reopen and re-close the playground during the scheduled work for safety reasons and we thank users for their patience and understanding,” said the city in a statement
Police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death pertaining to the body of a female discovered in a mobile home early Saturday morning
RCMP have identified the woman as 57-year-old Cindy Walsh
West Kelowna RCMP were called to a home in the Westview Village mobile home park May 3 to conduct a well-being check when they discovered the body
“We’re asking anyone who knew Cindy Walsh or may have seen her during the month of April to contact the Southwest District Major Crime Unit,” said Staff Sgt
“Even something seemingly minor could assist investigators in determining what led to her death.”
Residents of the mobile home park told Castanet News police were going door-to-door asking for CCTV footage dating as far back as April 18
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Southwest District Major Crime Unit at 1-877-987-8477
West Kelowna fire crews responded to a fire that broke out early Monday morning along Highway 97 near the intersection of Grizzly Road
The photo shows the fire climbing the tree and multiple bushes catching fire around it
Brolund says investigators have not determined what started the fire but that it was likely human-caused
"We appreciate the quick notification from the public
which allowed us to knock this down while still small," Brolund says
A wildfire was discovered late Sunday in an area along Bear Lake Main Road
The BC Wildfire Service says the fire is located just north of Lambly Lake and is being held
It is 0.2 hectares and it is believed to be human-caused
Another spot fire was reported on the other side of Okanagan Lake
near Bertram Creek Regional Park on Thursday
It was also human-caused and was brought under control quickly
including eight in the Kamloops Fire Centre
All the fires in the Kamloops zone are either under control or being held
The bulk of this year’s fires have been in the Prince George Fire Centre
Residents of a Westside mobile home park say they have been questioned by police about a sudden death in their community
People who live in Westview Village mobile home park along Highway 97 report seeing several RCMP vehicles near a home in the park since early Saturday
One woman says she saw someone wearing a jacket with CORONER written on the back
Another neighbour says police have been going door to door asking for CCTV footage dating back to April 18
Investigators asked about any possible altercation in the area or anything suspicious and an RCMP officer confirmed to them that there had been a death
The resident noted that the serious crime unit was on the scene for hours on Sunday
Castanet has contacted the RCMP to request more details
No one was injured in Sunday morning's fire at Fintry Provincial Park
although the travel trailer that burned was completely destroyed
North Westside Fire Rescue responded to the fire on Fintry Delta Road at about 5:30 a.m.
and crews arrived to find a "fully involved" travel trailer
according to NWFR chief Ross Kotscherofski
"Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly but the RV was a total loss," Kotscherofski said
The cause of the fire remains under investigation
An RV went up in flames in Fintry Provincial Park Sunday morning
Large flames and black smoke were visible in the park
Some people in the area reported hearing a loud explosion during the fire
likely due to a propane tank catching fire
The cause of the fire is not known at this time
The RV fire comes after another large mobile home fire near Oyama early Saturday morning
West Kelowna RCMP were called to what witnesses described as a “violent” altercation at a home on a vineyard property Thursday night
The incident at the property at Reece and Elliott roads occurred about 8:30 p.m
Witnesses described seeing one man swinging a long stick or a bat while another was threatened with a machete
Brendan Dolan confirmed a disturbance did take place at the property
“There were some weapons like a long piece of wood that was just swung around,” Dolan tells Castanet
“The machete you referred to was just brandished but was never used during the attack or assault
“All parties are uncooperative at this point so there are no real investigative leads to follow at this point.”
Dolan says that could change if victims choose to re-engage police
He says there were no reports of injuries and no one was taken to hospital
According to Dolan it appears two groups of two were involved in the incident
Dolan did say police have attended the property previously but was not aware of the circumstances
What neighbours have described as a known problem house in West Kelowna has been the focus of significant police attention
Emergency Response Team vehicles have been positioned outside of a house on Drought Road in Westbank since shortly after 10 a.m
Area resident Judy Smith said she saw police officers
as well as RCMP dogs on the scene early in the day
At one point she saw them deploy a drone and enter a home in full tactical gear
“They also had one guy down and took him into a vehicle in handcuffs,” she said
What brought the police to the neighbourhood Friday isn’t clear
but the home is known to be a cause of some concern to neighbours
Police confirmed that West Kelowna RCMP and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team are currently on the scene in the 2400 block of Drought Road to execute a search warrant
"There is no danger to public safety," RCMP said
"Due to the nature of the search warrant no other details will be released at this time."
A group of residents in Upper Fintry have started a petition to get their roads paved
The community was developed in the 60s but the roads in the area were never paved and over the years residents have had to live with dusty roads and potholes
Upper Fintry residents living on Dunwaters Drive
and Gray Street say they are developing health issues because of the poor road conditions and the dust
Eric Chopin and his wife live on Dunwaters Drive
have been lobbying the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and the Regional District of Central Okanagan to make changes to no avail for months now
"Many of the neighbours have breathing conditions which include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma
my wife being one of the affected," Chopin said
He says the provincial government has been pretty clear with him they have no intention of paving the roads in the area
the community has sent the ministry a petition signed by 62 residents
"The current state of these roads is unsustainable
and the number of potholes has become absurd — driving here often feels like a slalom course just to avoid damage to vehicles
It’s not just frustrating — it’s unsafe," the petition said
Chopin says residents were told if they want the area paved they should pay for it themselves
Castanet reached out to the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and were given the same information
there are no plans to upgrade existing gravel roads
to hard surfacing," the ministry said in an email
"Ministry staff are working closely with local maintenance contractor
to identify and prioritize opportunities for future improvements within the subdivision
such as drainage and surface gravelling."
Some residents have been trying to have the road situation addressed for years now say they don't know what to do next
"Our community believes the situation has reached a point where grading and dust suppression are no longer sufficient
and that permanent paving is necessary for safety
and environmental sustainability," said Andrew Dyczkowski
Upper Fintry resident Troy Van Dyk says he has worked in road construction for years so he says he knows what he's talking about when he says the paving would cost $1M
A clumsily worded explanation about a fee hike sent to West Kelowna residents has caused the city’s water woes to again boil over
and prompted a mea culpa from municipal officials
“We apologize to the users that got that letter
the chief administrative officer for West Kelowna
Bowles explained city staff have been fielding numerous calls about the Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant repayment plan and pointed out a few lines from the letter may have misled people
The letter that landed in mailboxes last week
The debt repayment will be added to your property tax bill as a parcel tax starting in 2026
The amount will be approximately $181 per year for 25 years,” the notice read
“Option 2: You can prepay your debt portion by submitting a payment in person to City Hall on or before May 31
Residents reliant on the new water plant already pay $150 a year and Bowles said people interpreted it to mean that there was an additional $181 added to their bills
they had to hand over $2,750 before May 31
“We went back and looked at the letter we sent the residents
it was a miscommunication or misstep on behalf of the City of West Kelowna,” Bowles said
“We were basically notifying residents that there will be a $31 additional charge (per year) on their utility bills.”
Bowles said the reason for the extra $31 a year is that while city savings
federal and provincial grant money have been applied to the bill
“We always planned to borrow those funds,” he said
When financing was first laid out the interest rates were considerably lower
It’s since gone up to more than four per cent
The charge people have been paying is $150 a year per household
With the borrowing process now underway the new figure is $181
to pay off the whole household amount in one shot
the $37.50 will be removed from your quarterly utility bill and you will not see a parcel tax on your property tax bill in 2026 or beyond for the Rose Valley Water Treatment Plant and connecting transmission mains project
“We don't expect people to pay for the water treatment plant out of their own pocket … we're giving them the option to pay us cash
and save yourself some money down the road,” he said
While there are explanations for what's transpired
An online petition calls for the city to rescind the "unfair payment."
Our city expects its citizens to shoulder a debt that was not of our making
negatively impacting our financial stability and peace of mind," the petition reads
The water plant has been a source of controversy since it open
After the McDougall Creek wildfire scorched the area around the treatment plant
numerous water quality advisories have been issues and notifications about the water issues have not always met the needs of the people who lived in the area
who only started at the city last September
is aware of these concerns and said the city is continually working to do better
MURFREESBORO ― Mona Thompson was sitting in a conference on Friday in Killeen, Texas, listening to Westview’s TSSAA girls basketball state tournament semifinal game
Thompson, the 1996 Class 2A state tournament MVP for Westview, had one earbud in, listening to the game from around 870 miles away. After Westview won beat Loretto

Westview’s program has been about family, and that was evident in the Chargers’ win on Saturday. The Chargers are the second Jackson area team to bring home a gold ball, joining Greenfield, who captured the Class 1A championship Saturday prior to Westview's win
Senior forward Alexis Evans
who had a tough journey through her basketball career having missed her sophomore season with a torn ACL
was hugging anyone she could find when the buzzer sounded
carried the gold ball trophy with her into the post-game press conference
Sims ― a Lady Vols softball signee ― said the emotions hit hard
“Knowing you’re bringing (the gold ball) back makes it a little easier
not coming to practice and getting to spend time in the locker room with everybody
Miss Basketball finalist Maddie Gray scored a game-high 18 points in the win
Westview coach Brian Haskins said building the program to where it is exciting to have

“You’re never going to remember it right now
you’re going to remember it four or five years from now
It’s a bond that you’re going to have for life
It’s a bond that’s hard to get anywhere else

These four years playing for a program like Westview means the world to its players and they have one more trophy to remember the journey with
“It means everything to play with Westview across my chest,” Evans said
“I wouldn’t want to play for any other team.”

Westview’s commercial nucleus is looking a bit like Old Fourth Ward West these days.
recently wrapped all work in Westview on Ralph David Abernathy Boulard streetscape upgrades and a fresh
needed access point to the Westside Trail.
The .5-mile streetscape improvement project runs through the heart of Westview’s business district
and stretches of protected bike lanes.
The RDA Access Point (located at 1385 Ralph David Abernathy) provides ramp and stair access
and new lighting and trees between the street and Beltline.
Beltline leaders say both initiatives boost safety for pedestrians and other non-motorists in the area and should lend a spark to adjacent Westview businesses along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.
In other Westview news, Beltline officials announced this week they plan to officially break ground on the long-awaited Enota Park project on Tuesday in commemoration of Earth Day 2025.
The expansion of Enota Park—it’s little more than a .3-acre playground surrounded by woods today—has been in the works for nearly 20 years.
Envisioned as a gateway between the Westside Trail and Westview
or about half the size of Historic Fourth Ward Park on the Eastside Trail
Features will include a large pavilion covered by a solar shade structure
Officials have told Urbanize the work is scheduled to finish in 18 months
meaning the new park would open to the public in late 2026.

MURFREESBORO – Maddie Gray likes to joke around at Westview basketball practice
Gray transferred to Westview over the summer from South Fulton and she has been a big lift for the Chargers, both in terms of basketball and just being around the program, helping lead the team to the TSSAA girls basketball state tournament
“She’s the class clown,” said Westview senior and Lady Vols softball signee McCall Sims

Gray scored a game-high 19 points with five rebounds in the Chargers’ 48-30 win over East Nashville in the Class 2A quarterfinals Wednesday at Murphy Center in Murfreesboro
Gray is a 2A Miss Basketball finalist in Class 2A after a strong season for Westview (31-1) and said that award is a team award as much as it is individual
She played her game just after the other 2A Miss Basketball finalists played each other in Loretto's Ally Weathers and McMinn Central's Karina Bystry
The Chargers will face Loretto (25-8) at 12:45 p.m
Friday at Murphy Center in the state semifinals
Moving from South Fulton to Westview has been a big boost for Gray
the atmosphere is completely different,” Gray said
“It’s nice having a team that is always there to lift you up when you don’t have your best game
It’s nice to feel like you have support at all time.”
Gray is one to keep the humor going and laughing with her teammates about the funny moments they’ve shared in Gray’s short time in Martin
she makes you laugh when you don’t want to
and I think we all are glad that she came.”
Westview is looking for its third TSSAA state championship in four seasons

The fact that I can provide a helping hand within this

BEAVERTON — When Westview’s James Kefgen finally got a shot from long range to drop
After missing his first nine shots from beyond the arc
Kefgen drilled the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:03 to play
lifting the No.4-ranked Wildcats to a 52-51 Metro League victory over the No.6 Southridge Skyhawks on Tuesday night at Southridge High School
Westview’s Kai Russell scored a team-high 13 points as the Wildcats (16-4
8-0 Metro) took a major step toward clinching their first outright league title
opening a two-game lead over the defending champion Skyhawks (17-4
Southridge led by as many as seven points in the second quarter
Westview led by as many as four at the end of the third quarter
and then there were five lead changes in the fourth quarter before Kefgen stepped into his game-winner from the left corner
Southridge had two more possessions to try and take the lead
The first ended with a turnover on an off-the-ball offensive foul
The other ended with a lob pass intended for Alonzo Hoff under the basket that Westview’s Dayton Jenkins deflected out of harm’s way as time expired
“It’s a great win,” Westview coach Mike Wolf said
Like this is how you have to play if you want to get to the Chiles Center
if you want to advance and compete for a state championship
“It’s not lost on us that it gives us a two-game lead with four games left and Westview’s never won a league title
That’s something I’ve tried to downplay in conversations
That was a goal for them — to win the Metro League title.”
Southridge’s Keenan Reckamp finished with a game-high 14 points
while Hoff had 13 points and Elijah Thomson scored 12
“I loved the way our guys competed,” Southridge coach Phil Vesel said
“We didn’t hang our heads when we got down
that was our game plan going in — just compete and play possessions.”
Westview had key contributions off the bench from Jenkins (10 points) and Jacob Epstein (eight points)
but the game turned on two crucial shots — Russell’s 3-pointer to close out the third quarter to give the Wildcats a 41-37 lead and Kefgen’s game-winner
“I’m blessed to have a team that has confidence in me to pull shots at the end of the game,” said Kefgen
the 6-foot-3 senior who signed with Oregon Tech in November
so … I think just the confidence that my team has in me allows me to make shots like that.”
how much of a relief was it to see one go through the net
“When you don’t hit one the whole game and you hit one to put your team up one with a minute left
I don’t think there’s any better feeling.”
And it wasn’t just his teammates who told him to keep shooting
you’re not going to think about the last five,’” Wolf said
“I was just really proud of him to put all that behind him and make a big shot.”
Southridge’s Nikko Kalish missed the game with flu-like symptoms
leaving the Skyhawks without a key starter who had been playing some of his best basketball over the past two weeks
“It hurt us not having that extra player,” Vesel said
“We had to play some guys who haven’t been playing a ton and Westview is a team where you’ve got grind and it’s physical
we had a guy run through a screen and just send one of our guys to the floor
The officials watched that happened and that was the tone of the game — it was going to be a real physical game
Westview has better depth than we do and with another player out
I thought fatigue played a little bit of a role down the stretch
I felt like we were a little bit tired there the second half.”
the Skyhawks had a chance coming out of a timeout with 1.9 seconds left and chance to inbound the ball in the front court and from in front of their own bench
The plan was to lob the ball toward to basket to the 6-7 Hoff
who would either score off the catch or get fouled
because the pass wasn’t high enough and the 6-1 Jenkins got to it before Huff
“We were trying to get a play at the rim if we felt like we had an advantage
and it looked like Alonzo had a step on that kid,” Vesel said
so we had a guy that hadn’t really run that spot as our inbounder and he didn’t quite get the ball up high enough and it got tipped away
it puts Westview in the driver seat for a league title
With the senior-dominant crew that they have
I don’t know if anyone else can put an ‘L’ on them and we don’t get a chance to chase ‘em anymore since they got us both times.”
but with one road game against last-place Aloha and home games against Beaverton
the Wildcats appear to have a lock on their first outright league championship
“That was a big win and a big step toward a league title,” said Russell
They’re one of the top teams in the state for a reason
but our defense won us the game and some late-game
MURFREESBORO – Ally Weathers held the tears back as she reflected on her Loretto career
making a second straight state tournament appearance following last year's state runner-up finish
Alexis Evans finished with 16 points and five rebounds for the Lady Chargers
eight rebounds and five assists as she closed out her Loretto career
which she described as "some of the best four years of my life."
UPDATES: TSSAA girls basketball state tournament 2025: Live update from Friday's semifinals
"We definitely went through a grind (this season)," Loretto coach Ashley Rutledge said

PORTLAND -- The Westview Wildcats put up a spirited fight for all but three minutes of their loss to the Wright Gators on Saturday
But the final three minutes of the second quarter were the Wildcats’ undoing
Wright’s Noah Schow finished with a team-high 15 points
leading the Gators to a 50-44 victory over Westview in Saturday’s quarterfinals of the 28th Les Schwab Invitational boys basketball tournament at Portland State University’s Viking Pavilion
Jeremiah Harshman had 14 points and Reggie Lester had 10 points as the undefeated Gators (8-0) of Tacoma advanced to Sunday’s 7:15 p.m
semifinal against the La Lumiere (Ind.) Lakers
“I think we played pretty well,” Lester said
“I’m excited to play another good team and hopefully we can come out with another win.”
Westview’s James Kefgen scored a game-high 25 points
hitting seven three-pointers along the way
The Wildcats (4-2) were within striking distance until the final 2:15 of the second quarter when the Gators went on a 12-4 run to take a 31-20 halftime lead
Westview staged a fourth-quarter rush that trimmed a 15-point deficit to five with less than a minute to play
“That’s a really good barometer for where we’re at,” Westview coach Mike Wolf said
“Wright presented us some different challenges
just in terms of their overall length and athleticism and toughness.
“We let them set the tempo and speed us up a little bit
We tried to match that instead of counter it and play to our strength
I don’t think we’re ever going to be the fastest team on the floor
but our inability to accept that tonight was part of the problem.”
Both teams were coming off close wins — Westview 64-58 over Camas (Wash.) on Thursday and Wright 52-47 over Nelson on Friday — so the first quarter and a half of Saturday’s quarterfinal saw both teams poking and prodding at one another
had a 19-16 lead when their game suddenly took off with just under three minutes to play in the first half
knocking down a turnaround jumper along the baseline
Then Harshman made two baskets — a running
right-handed bank shot in the lane and a three-pointer from the top of the arc
Martin Kaupanger followed with a two-handed dunk off a Westview turnover
Lester drilled a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer
and five other empty possessions -- three that ended with turnovers
“The pace got to Wright’s liking,” Wolf said
some of our reads and actions that are open against teams with less length
Or it looked open and it closed faster than expected
“I thought our defense was as good as I could have hoped against them
And what was it that got into the Gators late in the second quarter
“Just adjusting to Westview’s style of play,” Wright coach Dominique Williams said
so just read the room and see what we’ve got.’
“We started to see where we could attack them from and then we were just playing the way we play
I think that’s what happened when we took up that lead.”
Schow said the Gators stepped up their intensity at both ends of the floor
“We just really signed in on defense and didn’t allow any good shots,” he said
The Gators extended their lead to as many as 15 points when Brian Holiday scored on a layup that made it 47-32 with 4:32 to play in the fourth quarter
who scored 11 of his 25 points in the final 4:10
His final three-pointer came with 23 left and pulled the Wildcats within 49-44
“We couldn’t find a counterpunch to get back in the game soon enough,” Wolf said
Wright shot 43.5 percent (20 for 46) from the field with five three-pointers to Westview’s 32.6 percent (14 for 43) with nine treys
The Gators also had the edge in rebounds (29-28)
I think we could have done better,” Schow said
“We had a big lead — 11 at halftime and at one point in the second half it was 15 — and then we just kind of let up toward the end
We’ve just got to do a better job of closing out games.”
Sunday to face Metro League rival Southridge
which dropped a 70-48 decision to La Lumiere in Saturday’s late semifinal
competing the way we are in late December and the quaterfinals of the LSI … sign me up,” Wolf said
“The nature of tournament basketball is you have to turn the page even fast than we had to on Thursday
You can sit with a win a little bit longer
we’ve got to learn from whatever we need to only if it relates to the team that we play tomorrow.”
Jesuit 59: Isaac Carr scored 20 points and Duce Paschal had 18 points and 17 rebounds to help send the Rams in Sunday’s semifinal against Gonzaga of Washington
Central Catholic outscored the Crusaders 20-11 in the third quarter to take a 44-35 lead
Pat Kilfoil scored a game-high 26 points and Isaac Bongen had 20 points and nine rebounds for Jesuit
and seven assists to lead the Lakers of La Porte
Drew Groenig scored 14 points with six rebounds and Keenan Reckamp had 13 points to lead Southridge
MARTIN – Graham Simpson was on a FaceTime call with his father
set to lead UT Martin in the first round of the FCS Playoffs while Graham had just led the Westview football team to a 50-36 win over East Nashville in the TSSAA football playoffs semifinals on Friday at Hardy Graham Stadium
threw for 372 yards and four touchdowns on 29-of-37 passing
including completions on his final 18 pass attempts
The Chargers (14-0) face Alcoa (13-1) in the TSSAA Class 3A championship game at 11 a.m
(ET) on Friday at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga
This is Westview’s first BlueCross Bowl appearance since winning the Class 2A state title in 2021 with Alabama backup QB Ty Simpson
what we talked about starting in February,” Westview coach Matt McConnell said
“We knew it was going to be a tall task to be able to get there
But these kids kept playing every week and we’ve gotten better every week.”
Westview had to deal with frustration for the first time this season as the Eagles were slowing down just about everything the Chargers tried to do

they really cooled down,” Graham Simpson said of East Nashville
“We came out (of halftime) even hotter than we were and came out with a win
We’re very grateful to have Dontez Joy on our team looking like a grown man.”
Joy had 98 receiving yards on nine catches and a touchdown
He also ran for two touchdowns in a Wildcat formation for the Chargers

he’s going to make something special,” Simpson said of Joy
Westview will have its biggest challenge in playing against the Tornadoes
who have won the last nine Class 3A championships and 10 of the last 11
Alcoa will be aiming for a walk-off win in the classification before moving to Class 4A starting in 2025
“We’re going up there for reason,” McConnell said
“We’re going up there to win a state championship
that’s our goal from the beginning – not to just get there
and 100% give everything we’ve got to win a state championship.”

Westview's Melinee Udom had the 6A girls golf title square in her sights last year in the state tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis
The freshman had the lead with four holes left

“Sometimes things just don't work out your way,” Udom said
it prepped me mentally and it kind of motivated me to work even harder for my summer schedule

I do believe that my game is definitely trending
I've been making some swing changes with my coach
I'm trying to be more consistent with that
“The conditions haven't been really good the past two matches
Just trying to play with the weather rather than against the weather helps me mentally to score better.”
The next step in the evolution in her game is improving her approach shots
“The power aspect of her game is what puts her in position to be able to create shots,” Westview coach Paul Gouldsbrough said
“Having consistent power and distance and accuracy is paying off
Fine-tuning her approach shots can elevate her to another level
“I think it was costing me strokes last year,” she said
“I wasn't really able to convert a lot of birdies
I've been working a lot on putting and my approach shots lately.”
She will need steady play around the green to reel in a state title
“She knew that her short game let her down last year,” Gouldsbrough said
She knows she's got to focus on closing tournaments out when she gets the chance.”

BEAVERTON -- Even on a night when the Barlow Bruins looked a little rough around the edges
Barlow’s Brayden Barron scored a team-high 17 points and Jalen Atkins and Blake Hills added 13 each
2 Bruins to a 55-51 non-conference boys basketball road win Tuesday over No
Westview led by as many as 12 points midway through the second quarter before Barlow closed the half on an 8-0 run to cut the Wildcats' lead to 24-20 at halftime
there were five lead changes and four ties before Barlow’s Mason Bierbrauer drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to give the Bruins a 46-43 lead with 5:14 to play in the fourth quarter
Westview still had a chance after Atkins made one of two free throws to make it 53-51 with nine seconds left
James Kefgen’s 3-pointer from the right corner with four seconds left missed the mark for the Wildcats
and made both free throws with two seconds left to close out the scoring
“Typical early-season game,” Barlow coach Tom Johnson said
And you’ve got to give Westview a lot of credit
They’re a very good team and I’m happy we survived this.”
Kefgen led all scorers with 19 points for the Wildcats
Lucas D’Haem and Peyton Read added eight points each
“We met the moment and played a really good team who deserves to be ranked second in the state,” Westview coach Mike Wolf said
I think we showed that we can go toe-to-toe with teams at that level
When Jenkins stole the ball and scored on a breakaway jam to put Westview in front 24-12 with 4:40 to play in the second quarter
it looked as if the Wildcats could do no wrong
and the Bruins were back in the game heading into the third quarter
“We started pressing and we starting picking up our energy,” said Barron
“That’s really what changed the game for us.”
Barlow had only 20 points in the first half
but scored 21 in the third quarter — eight made baskets
including five 3-pointers — to take a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter
Hills’ driving layup gave Barlow its biggest lead at 52-47 with 2:37 remaining and the Bruins held on from there
pushing their record to 2-0 while spoiling Westview’s season opener
“We saw what Westview was doing,” Atkins said
“We knew that they were going to try to speed us up and make us do stuff that we didn’t want to do
That’s what basketball players do and we came together
What would Atkins like to see his teammates take away from Tuesday’s game
“The grittier team is going to win,” he said
whoever wins 50-50 balls and does the little things
But the second half came around and we ended up coming back and winning the game
Westview was right there with nine seconds left
“We had the ball down two with a chance to win or tie the game,” Wolf said
“We executed the play perfectly and James took a tough shot that he can make
And if it doesn’t then you’re kicking yourself with your head down
“I told them that I was really proud of the effort and the performance
What else did Wolf learn about his team in the opener
“I learned that we’re pretty good,” said Wolf
beginning his eighth season with the Wildcats
“I learned that we’ve got a bunch of guys who compete and who want to work and get better
“Our defensive game plan was trying to make Barlow do what we want instead of what they want
You hold that team to 20 points in the first half
Then you give up 21 in the third quarter and you wonder if maybe you stayed with the same thing too long and maybe let them get comfortable and get into a rhythm
“No state championships are handed out on Dec
