(WSBT) — A South Bend man has become the second person allegedly caught using a drone recently to try and smuggle drugs and tobacco into Westville Correctional Facility
Authorities also suspect Zamale Davis succeeded in at least one previous attempt at the prison
is charged with two counts of Level 5 felony trafficking with an inmate
an official with the Indiana Department of Corrections and multiple police agencies on the night of April 3 responded to the prison’s drone detection system
The system alerted staff to the presence of a drone in the air space around the prison
Authorities soon entered a nearby building along U.S
A man later identified as Davis was spotted running along the edge of the property
Davis kept running even after being warned about the dog and his potential to bite
Davis stopped when informed the dog had been released to chase him down
remote control along with multiple bags of contraband were among the items found during a search of the building
Authorities said the contraband included nearly two pounds of marijuana
about a pound of tobacco and over 1,300 rolling papers
Also allegedly seized were seven cell phones
Davis is suspected in a drone drug trafficking incident at the prison on March 2
That’s because Davis while being arrested was recognized by Warden Jason Smiley from the previous drone related response and the drugs seized were in the same type bags that somehow found their way into the prison last month
Davis was being held in the LaPorte County Jail on $15,000 bond
Eric Patino was allegedly caught in a failed attempt to get methamphetamine and other drugs inside the prison through the use of a drone
A drone detected in the prison’s airspace was soon witnessed by responding authorities flying back to where it was launched
The 29-year-old Hammond man quickly emerged from some nearby brush and was chased on foot until he was soon captured
Authorities walking toward where Patino was first spotted discovered the drone along with large quantities of methamphetamine
LaPorte County Prosecutor Sean Fagan said the use of drones to get contraband into the hands of offenders appears to be a “disturbing trend” and one he believes will continue
“You never underestimate people and what they can think of and how to use things
The city-based Westville franchise is a solid and reliable choice for healthy
with a focus on generous salads and a wide range of veggie dishes
The first time I visited their Upper West Side location (on Broadway between West 82nd and 83rd streets)
which consists of three to four market veggies (chosen from 19 offerings) cooked in various ways
declare with utter stupefaction that Westville’s burger was one of the best he’d had in a “long
the nutrition-focused Westville paradoxically became my go-to destination whenever I crave a juicy
Westville’s hamburger stands out because of its thick
a monster compared to the four-to-six-ounces that seem to be standard at many city restaurants — let alone the quasi-flat “smashburgers” currently in vogue
Westville’s eight-ouncer is by default cooked medium rare but does come out more on the rare side
though I’m assuming asking for medium should do the trick
and juicy that I’m happy with the slight undercooking (the French would refer to it as a perfectly acceptable saignant
whose sturdiness accommodates the oversized patty and excess dripping juices (on a regular bun
the whole thing would probably fall apart)
While it is offered with a side of fries or salad
it eases your conscience – most everyone else at Westville is eating veggies
so you can at least claim you’re somewhat in the same boat (while hiding the burger behind the salad and using discretion with every bite)
seasoned with lemon and olive oil that lets the pungent leaves shine
the salad is topped with marinated red onions (not too sweet
which can be added as a tasty topping for the burger in case the thick slab of raw red onion is “too much.” I also recommend going with a drizzle of their top-notch brown mustard
At $15 a pop for weekday lunches ($17 at dinner or weekend brunch)
Westville’s hamburger with salad is one of the best deals in town
Veggie and vegan variations are also available
Westville is open every weekday from 11:30 a.m
but expect many families with young children on weekends

I’ve been a big Westville fan for a while now
especially of their steak sandwiches (add gouda + extra pickles)
I’ve noticed a stark decline — shrinking portions
our portions were so thin + bill so high I told myself to “never go back” — sad that’s happening at neighborhood favorites now
but have you priced hamburgers at area restaurants lately
I’d rather have my fried ground beef at home
sans fries (they now give me indigestion…)
A Big Mac meal at McDonald’s is around $11 now
The last couple of times they made mistakes on my bill
I was overcharged for items and charged for items I did not order
I prefer the thinner patties of America’s drive-in burger joints
give me a real burger where i can bite into a good chunk of meat
This burger seems to go against all trends and at $15 for looks like an absolute steal
diner and restaurant in this city serves these gaudy monstrosities
I stopped eating overly fat burgers served on English muffins when I moved out of my parents’ house

Mike Megyese was hired as the Westville girls basketball head coach
It was enough for him to believe a season like this could happen
Nobody wins at Westville. It’s a town most known for having a state penitentiary in it. The girls basketball program has never won a sectional title in its 49 years. The boys team’s drought is at 101 years
Yet Megyese has the lady Blackhawks sitting at a 20-2 record heading into the IHSAA Class 1A postseason this Tuesday
More: Check here daily for South Bend area and Indiana state high school basketball scores
More: As Bethel men's basketball honors its 1995 champs, its current team has title aspirations also
“They didn’t stop working,” said Megyese of his team
and I thought we had a chance to be really special
I just loved what I saw from the work ethic standpoint and the character standpoint.”
What has allowed Megyese to be successful? This is the third stop on a 28-year head coaching journey for Megyese
A six-year run in there from 2002-07 yielded six sectional
It was the first girls basketball state champion in Saint Joseph County history
More: State champions fill up South Bend Saint Joseph's 10 best athletes of 21st century list
One of his assistant coaches during that stretch
had a firsthand experience of what Megyese did to elevate the Saint Joe program
he was very direct and was really good at analyzing where they were at
He could tell you stats right now from 2002 and 2004
and that was a lot of fun working with somebody who just had a mind for things like that.”
That relationship building was evident this fall when Megyese asked one of the star players from that 2005 team
to come and speak to the current Westville group
“That was truly special to me,” Megyese said
“… That (response) keeps you feeling like (the state championship) wasn’t that long ago.”
Megyese took the 2009 season off before starting a 15-year stint at Michigan City from 2010-24
Although the Wolves only won one sectional title in that span (2012)
they had winning seasons in 10 of the 15 years
Megyese sits with a career record of 410-233
That feels Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame worthy
“That says a lot for Mike’s style of coaching
I believe there’s an opportunity for him (to go into the Hall of Fame) if that ever comes up.”
Maximizing the talent at WestvilleHanging in the Westville gym are banners honoring the championships won by various programs at the school over the years
Only one sport has zero numbers on its banner: girls basketball
Megyese made it a point to remind his team of that throughout the season
“We did it at about four or five times this year at selective times ― I picked those selective times ― and I just told them to keep their goals in front of them,” Megyese said
“They had a chance to do something special that the school has never done
They’ll add “2024-25” under two sections of the banner ― Porter County Conference tournament champions
The Blackhawks earned its first conference tournament title in the 53-year history of the event on Jan
then beat the Cherokees again three days later to be outright regular season champs
I’m still a little shocked by it,” said senior Andrea Benefield of the success this season
I would’ve never thought I’d be in this position my senior year
especially after the last two years and how hard it’s been on everyone.”
Maybe the biggest thing Megyese has brought to Westville is stability
five different people have been the Blackhawks girls basketball head coach for the last three seasons
“It’s very nice not switching through coaches halfway through the year,” senior Miranda Sparks said
so having one coach who’s been there since day one supporting you through your ups and downs is the best feeling.”
It’s not just a 21-2 season against easy competition
Westville has picked up quality wins against Bremen (20-2)
which ranks as the 21st-best margin in the state
The Blackhawks have done all this while having just nine players in the program currently
“(Megyese) pushes us every practice,” said freshman Hillary Labis
“He makes sure we’re all here and all ready
We’ve got to keep going heading into sectionals.”
Up next: A (likely) rematch – and chance at redemptionThe sectional draw was a mixed bag for Westville
they were the only team in the seven-school field to get a bye
what likely awaits them in the semifinal is a matchup with No
The Blazers handed the Blackhawks one of its two defeats this year
Marquette is the defending Class 1A state runner-up and returned 99% of its offense from last year’s group
headlined by Indiana Junior All-Star candidate Laniah Davis
More: 111 high school athletes to watch for from the South Bend area in 2025
Should the Blazers (17-4) beat host Bowman Academy (8-11) in the first round Tuesday
it’ll set up one of the best semifinal matchups in the state Friday night
“We knew when we played them that they’d be a good team
and they are,” said Benefield of Marquette
and we knew we’d have to face them again during sectionals
The Westville team was together when the sectional draw was revealed last Sunday
Their reaction was all Megyese needed to know his team was ready for the upcoming challenge
“When we saw who we’re probably going to play on Friday night

A casual eatery with a “veggie-forward” menu is on track to open at some point next year at The Crossing Clarendon
The location at 2800 Clarendon Blvd, in the former Jos. A. Bank space, will be the first location outside of New York City for Westville
which serves “casual American food.”
though we can’t share an exact sense of timing just yet,” founder Jay Strauss told ARLnow
The restaurant applied for a state license to serve alcoholic beverages last month
Strauss said the nearly 4,000-square-foot space will look “simple and inviting
emphasizing a neighborhood feel,” while offering “a diverse menu with high-quality ingredients prepared simply and deliciously.”
In New York, the restaurant’s eight current locations offer soups
salads and heartier dishes like smokey mac n’ cheese
turkey chili and burgers — including vegan Beyond Meat burgers
the restaurant is noted for its long list of market vegetables
customers can order a la carte from a menu of freshly prepared veggies
from brussels sprouts with honey dijon mustard to lemon Greek potatoes with fresh herbs and garlic butter
Three to four market vegetables can also be ordered as a “Market Plate,” and Westville’s chicken
salmon and steak plate meals come with two vegetables of choice
Strauss said Arlington “felt like the perfect fit” for the restaurant’s expansion
“The area’s vibrant mix of residents and professionals
align well with Westville’s ethos of being a neighborhood destination for all,” he said
While Westville is currently focused on the Clarendon opening
Strauss said “there is the potential for additional locations in the DMV area” in the future
New Haven police arrested an individual who allegedly made a threatening antisemitic comment to a Jewish individual near the Westville Synagogue on Friday
According to a New Haven Police Department press release
the suspect “aggressively approached” an individual outside the synagogue and said
“What if I throw this hot coffee in your face
I used to beat your kind in New York.” The suspect then lunged at the individual
who now faces charges for third-degree intimidation based on bigotry or bias
“We believe it is an isolated incident,” Westville Synagogue Rabbi Fred Hyman wrote to the News
“We did have a guard posted during shabbos services” — weekly prayer services on Friday night and Saturday to honor the Sabbath
New Haven Police Department communications officer Christian Bruckhart also described the incident as “upsetting,” but not indicative of a larger threat to the community
Hyman noted that the synagogue’s leadership have been in close contact with NHPD officers
the regional security advisor for the Secure Community Network
Shanbrom oversees security for the Jewish Federations of Greater New Haven
as well as the Jewish Community Center in Greenwich
Smith will not appear in court to be arraigned until Monday
because he was processed after the time when the department would usually escort an arrested individual to court for an appearance
The court is closed on Saturday and Sunday
