55 counts of possession of child pornography
production of child pornography and unlawful deepfakes
A Westwego man facing several dozen counts of possession of child pornography recorded video of himself sexually abusing a minor and used software to digitally alter an image of the victim to make it pornographic
The disturbing videos and images were discovered in email accounts and on devices linked to 61-year-old Darrell Devenny
according to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office
Devenny appeared in Jefferson Parish Magistrate Court on Monday for a bail hearing following his arrest last week for production of pornography involving juveniles
55 counts of possession of pornography involving juveniles
three counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and molestation
A deepfake is video or audio that has been manipulated to appear authentic or real using artificial intelligence technology
The Louisiana Bureau of Investigations received a tip in May 2024 about a sexually explicit image of an infant that had been uploaded using an email address linked to Devenny
Agents got a search warrant for Devenny's Westwego home and the email accounts registered to him
They discovered more lewd images of children as young toddlers and infants
Among those images were videos of a sleeping child being fondled and touched by a man's genitals
The man in the video was later identified as Devenny
There were other sexually explicit videos of the child
who was between the ages of 4 and 11 and identified as someone known to the Devenny
One image was taken when the child was out in public had been digitally altered to appear as if the child was nude
according to the District Attorney's Office
Devenny admitted using specialized software to create pornographic images
He also admitted viewing and saving the other explicit images of children
Devenny's bail had already been set at $110,000 on the 55 counts of child pornography possession
Jefferson Parish Criminal Commissioner David Wolff set bail at $700,000 on the remaining charges
Wolff also ordered that Devenny put be on an ankle monitor and barred the use of any computers

Westwego was founded by hurricane refugees. On October 1, 1893, Louisiana's Jefferson was hit by the deadliest storm in its history. There was no radar, no Weather Channel, no National Hurricane Center to warn of its coming
Hurricanes didn't even have names then; this one is usually remembered as the "Great October Storm." Sixteen feet of storm surge wiped the fishing town of Chernière Caminada off the map
The survivors fled inland for days through the swamp until arriving at a new canal settlement between Lake Cataouatche and the Mississippi River
The town was once New Orleans's pantry. The canal was eventually filled in
now called Salaville after landowner Pablo Sala
The Texas and Pacific Railroad had built a huge grain elevator there
and together with its twin across the river
it provided most of the grain storage in the New Orleans area
Westwego didn't live up to its name.Local legend has the town borrowing its name from the dreams of passengers coming through town
or conductors yelling "West we go!" as trains pulled out of the station
But the railroad's chief engineer always held that the name was decided 1,300 miles away
rail executives looked at various sites for an eastern terminus
decreeing "West we go from here!" Sadly
financing for the new western railroad collapsed within a few years
and it never even reached the Texas border
every place has a story. If we allow weird spelling
there are some other candidates for complete sentence towns—including Uneedus
just across Lake Pontchartrain from Westwego
which took its name from the kind-of-presumptuous slogan of a local lumber company: "You need us." But the champions of complete sentence place names are the Apaches
Their language allows complex sentences to be built up with a dense cluster of prefixes and suffixes
so nearly all of their geography is labeled with a full sentence
Landmarks have names like "Water Flows Inward Under a Cottonwood Tree" or "Line of White Rocks Extends Up and Out." Those names make "Westwego" look downright puny

Detectives with the Westwego Police Department investigating a double shooting that left two teens dead and a third wounded in the 100 block of Louisiana Street in Westwego on Friday
Three of the eight guns seized from a home on Corrine Court in LaPlace following a shootout outside on May 23
have been linked to shootings on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish in January and April
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators said they believe a group of gunmen are responsible for a series of 12 retaliatory shootings on the West Bank between January and April that left an 18-year-old man dead and two others wounded
Authorities allege the two are part of a gang that has operated in and around the West Bank neighborhood near Westwego where most of the violence has taken place
as-of-yet unidentified co-conspirators in the case
Keith Dowling testified Tuesday during a hearing in Jefferson Parish Magistrate Court
were arrested in August and booked with conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit attempted second-degree murder
They’ve also been booked with nine counts of conspiracy to commit illegal use of a weapon — accused of shooting at
Investigators say Johnson and Lewis were involved in the April 5 shooting death of Joseph Perrilloux, 18
Perrilloux was walking in the 900 block of Beechgrove Boulevard near Westwego (map) when two men emerged from a red vehicle and opened fire
Lewis and Johnson were also accused being involved in the shooting of a 15-year-old boy on April 6 on Wayne Avenue near Westwego and a 22-year-old man who was injured April 8 on nearby Patton Lane
Investigators used cellphone records and ballistic evidence to tie Lewis and Johnson to those three shootings as well as gunfire that targeted West Bank residences on at least nine other occasions
Detectives allege Johnson and Lewis were targeting the relatives and homes of people they blamed for the deaths of their father
Thomas was shot and killed along with Linda Turner
inside Turner's Emile Avenue home near Westwego on Jan
Gerald Barker, 35, was indicted July 20 with two counts of second-degree murder in the killings
which the Sheriff’s Office said were drug-related
Walker was fatally wounded on March 12
in an exchange of gunfire with Jaheim Shavers
Shavers was pronounced dead at the scene while Walker survived for 28 days before succumbing to his injuries
Walker and Shavers shot each other during the confrontation
But Walker's 15 gunshot wounds also included bullets from another
No one has been arrested or identified by police as a suspect in the triple shooting
But Dowling alleges that Lewis and Johnson conspired to target people they believed were responsible for Walker's killing
said they don't believe his death is the cause of the recent violence
said Friday that she is still grieving for Walker
whose case has not seen anyone brought to justice
"I'm overwhelmed and appalled by the allegations that they are making right now," said Griffin
who was adamant that her grandson’s death has not fueled retaliations
their father and the unidentified members of the conspiracy were members of gangs that operated in and around the David Development
the neighborhood located just west of Westwego where most of the shootings took place
Investigators connected Lewis and Johnson to a red Ford Explorer that witnesses spotted fleeing the scene of some of the shootings
which was later found abandoned in New Orleans
showed the vehicle was present at many of the shootings that happened in April
A rifle and two handguns seized at Lewis and Johnson’s LaPlace home earlier this year were linked by ballistics to nine of the West Bank shootings
The guns were recovered after St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a shootout in front of the brothers' Corrine Court residence on the night of May 23
John investigators are still conducting ballistic testing to determine whether the guns were used in any shootings reported in their jurisdiction
defense attorneys Jim Williams and Michael Idoyaga argued that prosecutors didn't have any evidence that either of their clients directly participated in or even conspired to plan the shootings
Criminal Commissioner Patricia Joyce disagreed and ruled there was probable cause to continue holding both men as charged
Johnson and Lewis were being held Friday at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna
Anyone with information about any of the homicides or shooting investigations is asked to call the Sheriff's Office investigations bureau at (504) 364-5300
The public can also call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll-free at 1 (877) 903-7867
Callers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn a $2,500 reward for information that leads to an indictment
